वैशंपायन उवाच ।
गते तस्मिन्द्विजश्रेष्ठे कस्मिंश्चित्कालपर्यये ।
चिन्तयामास सा कन्या मन्त्रग्रामबलाबलम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
gate tasmindvijaśreṣṭhe kasmiṁścitkālaparyaye ,
cintayāmāsa sā kanyā mantragrāmabalābalam.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: After that best of brahmins had departed, and some time had passed, the maiden (Kuntī) began to ponder the strength and weakness of the collection of sacred syllables (mantra-grāma).
अयं वै कीदृशस्तेन मम दत्तो महात्मना ।
मन्त्रग्रामो बलं तस्य ज्ञास्ये नातिचिरादिव ॥२॥
2. ayaṁ vai kīdṛśastena mama datto mahātmanā ,
mantragrāmo balaṁ tasya jñāsye nāticirādiva.
2. ayam vai kīdṛśaḥ tena mama dattaḥ mahātmanā
mantragrāmaḥ balam tasya jñāsye na aticirāt iva
2. What kind of collection of sacred syllables (mantra-grāma) has indeed been given to me by that great being (mahātman)? I will soon ascertain its power.
एवं संचिन्तयन्ती सा ददर्शर्तुं यदृच्छया ।
व्रीडिता साभवद्बाला कन्याभावे रजस्वला ॥३॥
3. evaṁ saṁcintayantī sā dadarśartuṁ yadṛcchayā ,
vrīḍitā sābhavadbālā kanyābhāve rajasvalā.
3. evaṃ saṃcintayantī sā dadarśa ṛtum yadṛcchayā
vrīḍitā sā abhavat bālā kanyābhāve rajasvalā
3. As she was contemplating in this manner, she unexpectedly experienced her menstrual period. Still a maiden, the young girl became ashamed (vrīḍitā) at becoming menstruating.
अथोद्यन्तं सहस्रांशुं पृथा दीप्तं ददर्श ह ।
न ततर्प च रूपेण भानोः संध्यागतस्य सा ॥४॥
4. athodyantaṁ sahasrāṁśuṁ pṛthā dīptaṁ dadarśa ha ,
na tatarpa ca rūpeṇa bhānoḥ saṁdhyāgatasya sā.
4. atha udyantaṃ sahasrāṃśuṃ pṛthā dīptaṃ dadarśa
ha na tatarpa ca rūpeṇa bhānoḥ sandhyāgatasya sā
4. Then, Pritha indeed saw the brilliant, rising sun, the one with a thousand rays. And she was not satisfied by the form of the sun (bhānu), which was setting.
तस्या दृष्टिरभूद्दिव्या सापश्यद्दिव्यदर्शनम् ।
आमुक्तकवचं देवं कुण्डलाभ्यां विभूषितम् ॥५॥
5. tasyā dṛṣṭirabhūddivyā sāpaśyaddivyadarśanam ,
āmuktakavacaṁ devaṁ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ vibhūṣitam.
5. tasyāḥ dṛṣṭiḥ abhūt divyā sā apaśyat divyadarśanam
āmuktakavacaṃ devaṃ kuṇḍalābhyāṃ vibhūṣitam
5. Her vision became divine, and she saw a divine manifestation: a god wearing armor and adorned with two earrings.
तस्याः कौतूहलं त्वासीन्मन्त्रं प्रति नराधिप ।
आह्वानमकरोत्साथ तस्य देवस्य भामिनी ॥६॥
6. tasyāḥ kautūhalaṁ tvāsīnmantraṁ prati narādhipa ,
āhvānamakarotsātha tasya devasya bhāminī.
6. tasyāḥ kautūhalaṃ tu āsīt mantraṃ prati narādhipa
āhvānam akarot sā atha tasya devasya bhāminī
6. But, O king (narādhipa), her curiosity (kautūhala) regarding the sacred incantation (mantra) arose. Then, that passionate woman (bhāminī) performed the invocation of that god.
प्राणानुपस्पृश्य तदा आजुहाव दिवाकरम् ।
आजगाम ततो राजंस्त्वरमाणो दिवाकरः ॥७॥
7. prāṇānupaspṛśya tadā ājuhāva divākaram ,
ājagāma tato rājaṁstvaramāṇo divākaraḥ.
7. prāṇān upaspr̥śya tadā ājuhāva divākaram
ājagāma tataḥ rājan tvaramāṇaḥ divākaraḥ
7. Having purified herself (by touching water), she then invoked the sun god (divākaram). O king, the sun god (divākaraḥ) then quickly came.
मधुपिङ्गो महाबाहुः कम्बुग्रीवो हसन्निव ।
अङ्गदी बद्धमुकुटो दिशः प्रज्वालयन्निव ॥८॥
8. madhupiṅgo mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvo hasanniva ,
aṅgadī baddhamukuṭo diśaḥ prajvālayanniva.
8. madhupiṅgaḥ mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvaḥ hasan iva
aṅgadī baddhamukuṭaḥ diśaḥ prajvālayan iva
8. He (the Sun god) was honey-brown, mighty-armed, and had a conch-like neck, as if smiling. Adorned with armlets and wearing a crown, he appeared as if illuminating the directions.
योगात्कृत्वा द्विधात्मानमाजगाम तताप च ।
आबभाषे ततः कुन्तीं साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥९॥
9. yogātkṛtvā dvidhātmānamājagāma tatāpa ca ,
ābabhāṣe tataḥ kuntīṁ sāmnā paramavalgunā.
9. yogāt kr̥tvā dvidhā ātmānam ājagāma tatāpa
ca ābabhāṣe tataḥ kuntīm sāmnā paramavalguna
9. Through his mystic power (yoga), having made his own self (ātman) twofold, he came and also radiated heat. Then, he spoke to Kunti with extremely sweet and conciliatory words.
आगतोऽस्मि वशं भद्रे तव मन्त्रबलात्कृतः ।
किं करोम्यवशो राज्ञि ब्रूहि कर्ता तदस्मि ते ॥१०॥
10. āgato'smi vaśaṁ bhadre tava mantrabalātkṛtaḥ ,
kiṁ karomyavaśo rājñi brūhi kartā tadasmi te.
10. āgataḥ asmi vaśam bhadre tava mantrabalāt kr̥taḥ
kim karomi avaśaḥ rājñi brūhi kartā tat asmi te
10. O auspicious lady, I have come under your control, compelled by the power of your incantation (mantra). O queen, tell me, what shall I, powerless, do? I am indeed the doer of that for you.
कुन्त्युवाच ।
गम्यतां भगवंस्तत्र यतोऽसि समुपागतः ।
कौतूहलात्समाहूतः प्रसीद भगवन्निति ॥११॥
11. kuntyuvāca ,
gamyatāṁ bhagavaṁstatra yato'si samupāgataḥ ,
kautūhalātsamāhūtaḥ prasīda bhagavanniti.
11. kuntī uvāca | gamyatām bhagavan tatra yataḥ asi
samupāgataḥ | kautūhalāt samāhūtaḥ prasīda bhagavan iti
11. Kunti said, "O Lord, please return to where you came from. I invoked you merely out of curiosity. Please be gracious, O Lord."
सूर्य उवाच ।
गमिष्येऽहं यथा मां त्वं ब्रवीषि तनुमध्यमे ।
न तु देवं समाहूय न्याय्यं प्रेषयितुं वृथा ॥१२॥
12. sūrya uvāca ,
gamiṣye'haṁ yathā māṁ tvaṁ bravīṣi tanumadhyame ,
na tu devaṁ samāhūya nyāyyaṁ preṣayituṁ vṛthā.
12. sūryaḥ uvāca | gamiṣye aham yathā mām tvam bravīṣi
tanumadhyame | na tu devam samāhūya nyāyyam preṣayitum vṛthā
12. The Sun said, "I will go, O slender-waisted one, as you instruct me. But it is not proper to invoke a deity and then send him away in vain."
तवाभिसंधिः सुभगे सूर्यात्पुत्रो भवेदिति ।
वीर्येणाप्रतिमो लोके कवची कुण्डलीति च ॥१३॥
13. tavābhisaṁdhiḥ subhage sūryātputro bhavediti ,
vīryeṇāpratimo loke kavacī kuṇḍalīti ca.
13. tava abhisaṃdhiḥ subhage sūryāt putraḥ bhavet iti
| vīryeṇa apratimaḥ loke kavacī kuṇḍalī iti ca
13. "O beautiful one, your intention is for a son to be born from the Sun, one who is unequalled in might in the world, possessing armor and earrings."
सा त्वमात्मप्रदानं वै कुरुष्व गजगामिनि ।
उत्पत्स्यति हि पुत्रस्ते यथासंकल्पमङ्गने ॥१४॥
14. sā tvamātmapradānaṁ vai kuruṣva gajagāmini ,
utpatsyati hi putraste yathāsaṁkalpamaṅgane.
14. sā tvam ātmapradānam vai kuruṣva gajagāmini |
utpatsyati hi putraḥ te yathāsaṅkalpam aṅgane
14. Therefore, O lady with the gait of an elephant, you must indeed offer yourself. For a son will be born to you, O fair lady, exactly as you have wished.
अथ गच्छाम्यहं भद्रे त्वयासंगम्य सुस्मिते ।
शप्स्यामि त्वामहं क्रुद्धो ब्राह्मणं पितरं च ते ॥१५॥
15. atha gacchāmyahaṁ bhadre tvayāsaṁgamya susmite ,
śapsyāmi tvāmahaṁ kruddho brāhmaṇaṁ pitaraṁ ca te.
15. atha gacchāmi ahaṃ bhadre tvayā āsaṅgamya susmite
śapsyāmi tvāṃ ahaṃ kruddhaḥ brāhmaṇaṃ pitaraṃ ca te
15. Now, O gentle lady with the beautiful smile, I depart after having met with you. In my anger, I will curse you, your Brahmin (teacher), and your father.
त्वत्कृते तान्प्रधक्ष्यामि सर्वानपि न संशयः ।
पितरं चैव ते मूढं यो न वेत्ति तवानयम् ॥१६॥
16. tvatkṛte tānpradhakṣyāmi sarvānapi na saṁśayaḥ ,
pitaraṁ caiva te mūḍhaṁ yo na vetti tavānayam.
16. tvatkṛte tān pradhakṣyāmi sarvān api na saṃśayaḥ
pitaraṃ ca eva te mūḍhaṃ yaḥ na vetti tava anayam
16. For your sake, I will undoubtedly burn all of them, including your foolish father who does not perceive your misconduct.
तस्य च ब्राह्मणस्याद्य योऽसौ मन्त्रमदात्तव ।
शीलवृत्तमविज्ञाय धास्यामि विनयं परम् ॥१७॥
17. tasya ca brāhmaṇasyādya yo'sau mantramadāttava ,
śīlavṛttamavijñāya dhāsyāmi vinayaṁ param.
17. tasya ca brāhmaṇasya adya yaḥ asau mantraṃ adāt
tava śīlavṛttam avijñāya dhāsyāmi vinayaṃ param
17. And today, I will inflict the highest punishment upon that Brahmin who, without knowing your character and conduct, gave you the sacred formula (mantra).
एते हि विबुधाः सर्वे पुरंदरमुखा दिवि ।
त्वया प्रलब्धं पश्यन्ति स्मयन्त इव भामिनि ॥१८॥
18. ete hi vibudhāḥ sarve puraṁdaramukhā divi ,
tvayā pralabdhaṁ paśyanti smayanta iva bhāmini.
18. ete hi vibudhāḥ sarve purandaramukhāḥ divi
tvayā pralabdhaṃ paśyanti smayantaḥ iva bhāmini
18. Indeed, O passionate lady, all these gods in heaven, led by Indra (Purandara), are watching as they are being deceived by you, and they seem to be smiling.
पश्य चैनान्सुरगणान्दिव्यं चक्षुरिदं हि ते ।
पूर्वमेव मया दत्तं दृष्टवत्यसि येन माम् ॥१९॥
19. paśya cainānsuragaṇāndivyaṁ cakṣuridaṁ hi te ,
pūrvameva mayā dattaṁ dṛṣṭavatyasi yena mām.
19. paśya ca enān suragaṇān divyam cakṣuḥ idam hi te
pūrvam eva mayā dattam dṛṣṭavatī asi yena mām
19. Behold these hosts of gods! For this divine vision (cakṣuḥ) has already been given to you by me, through which you have seen me.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽपश्यत्त्रिदशान्राजपुत्री सर्वानेव स्वेषु धिष्ण्येषु खस्थान् ।
प्रभासन्तं भानुमन्तं महान्तं यथादित्यं रोचमानं तथैव ॥२०॥
20. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'paśyattridaśānrājaputrī; sarvāneva sveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣu khasthān ,
prabhāsantaṁ bhānumantaṁ mahāntaṁ; yathādityaṁ rocamānaṁ tathaiva.
20. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ apaśyat tridaśān
rājaputrī sarvān eva sveṣu dhiṣṇyeṣu
khasthān prabhāsantam bhānumantam
mahāntam yathā ādityam rocamānam tathā eva
20. Vaiśampāyana said: Then the princess saw all the celestial beings (tridaśān) in their own heavenly dwelling places, positioned in the sky. They were shining, radiant, and great, glowing just like the sun (ādityam).
सा तान्दृष्ट्वा व्रीडमानेव बाला सूर्यं देवी वचनं प्राह भीता ।
गच्छ त्वं वै गोपते स्वं विमानं कन्याभावाद्दुःख एषोपचारः ॥२१॥
21. sā tāndṛṣṭvā vrīḍamāneva bālā; sūryaṁ devī vacanaṁ prāha bhītā ,
gaccha tvaṁ vai gopate svaṁ vimānaṁ; kanyābhāvādduḥkha eṣopacāraḥ.
21. sā tān dṛṣṭvā vrīḍamānā iva bālā
sūryam devī vacanam prāha bhītā
gaccha tvam vai gopate svam vimānam
kanyābhāvāt duḥkhaḥ eṣaḥ upacāraḥ
21. Having seen them, the young girl (bālā), as if shy, and the goddess (devī), frightened, said these words to Sūrya: 'O Lord of the herd (gopate), please return to your celestial chariot (vimāna)! Due to my maidenly state, this kind of overture is distressing.'
पिता माता गुरवश्चैव येऽन्ये देहस्यास्य प्रभवन्ति प्रदाने ।
नाहं धर्मं लोपयिष्यामि लोके स्त्रीणां वृत्तं पूज्यते देहरक्षा ॥२२॥
22. pitā mātā guravaścaiva ye'nye; dehasyāsya prabhavanti pradāne ,
nāhaṁ dharmaṁ lopayiṣyāmi loke; strīṇāṁ vṛttaṁ pūjyate deharakṣā.
22. pitā mātā guravaḥ ca eva ye anye
dehasya asya prabhavanti pradāne
na aham dharmam lopayiṣyāmi loke
strīṇām vṛttam pūjyate deharakṣā
22. A father, a mother, and any other teachers (guravaḥ) who have the authority to give away this body (in marriage) - I shall not transgress my moral duty (dharma) in this world. Among women, the conduct (vṛttam) of body protection (deharakṣā) is revered.
मया मन्त्रबलं ज्ञातुमाहूतस्त्वं विभावसो ।
बाल्याद्बालेति कृत्वा तत्क्षन्तुमर्हसि मे विभो ॥२३॥
23. mayā mantrabalaṁ jñātumāhūtastvaṁ vibhāvaso ,
bālyādbāleti kṛtvā tatkṣantumarhasi me vibho.
23. mayā mantrabalaṃ jñātum āhūtaḥ tvaṃ vibhāvaso
bālyāt bālā iti kṛtvā tat kṣantum arhasi me vibho
23. O radiant one, I invoked you to understand the power of the sacred utterance (mantra). Therefore, please forgive me for that, considering my childishness as a young girl, O lord.
सूर्य उवाच ।
बालेति कृत्वानुनयं तवाहं ददानि नान्यानुनयं लभेत ।
आत्मप्रदानं कुरु कुन्तिकन्ये शान्तिस्तवैवं हि भवेच्च भीरु ॥२४॥
24. sūrya uvāca ,
bāleti kṛtvānunayaṁ tavāhaṁ; dadāni nānyānunayaṁ labheta ,
ātmapradānaṁ kuru kuntikanye; śāntistavaivaṁ hi bhavecca bhīru.
24. sūryaḥ uvāca bālā iti kṛtvā anunayaṃ
tava ahaṃ dadāni na anya anunayaṃ
labheta ātmapradānaṃ kuru kuntikanye
śāntiḥ tava evaṃ hi bhavet ca bhīru
24. The Sun said: "Considering you a child, I grant your request (anunaya); no other person would obtain such a concession. O daughter of Kunti, you must offer yourself to me (ātmapradāna); indeed, in this way, peace (śānti) will be yours, O timid one."
न चापि युक्तं गन्तुं हि मया मिथ्याकृतेन वै ।
गमिष्याम्यनवद्याङ्गि लोके समवहास्यताम् ।
सर्वेषां विबुधानां च वक्तव्यः स्यामहं शुभे ॥२५॥
25. na cāpi yuktaṁ gantuṁ hi mayā mithyākṛtena vai ,
gamiṣyāmyanavadyāṅgi loke samavahāsyatām ,
sarveṣāṁ vibudhānāṁ ca vaktavyaḥ syāmahaṁ śubhe.
25. na ca api yuktaṃ gantuṃ hi mayā
mithyākṛtena vai gamiṣyāmi anavadyāṅgi
loke samavahāsyatām sarveṣāṃ
vibudhānāṃ ca vaktavyaḥ syām ahaṃ śubhe
25. And indeed, it is not proper for me to leave, for I would be rendered false (mithyākṛtena). O lady with faultless limbs, I would become an object of ridicule (samavahāsyatā) in the world. And I would be censured by all the wise (gods), O auspicious one.
सा त्वं मया समागच्छ पुत्रं लप्स्यसि मादृशम् ।
विशिष्टा सर्वलोकेषु भविष्यसि च भामिनि ॥२६॥
26. sā tvaṁ mayā samāgaccha putraṁ lapsyasi mādṛśam ,
viśiṣṭā sarvalokeṣu bhaviṣyasi ca bhāmini.
26. sā tvaṃ mayā samāgaccha putraṃ lapsyasi mādṛśam
viśiṣṭā sarvalokeṣu bhaviṣyasi ca bhāmini
26. Therefore, you must unite with me (sāmagaccha); you will obtain a son like me. And you will become distinguished among all people, O splendid one (bhāmini).
