वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा महाप्राज्ञो धृतराष्ट्रः सुयोधनम् ।
पुनरेव महाभागः संजयं पर्यपृच्छत ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā mahāprājño dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanam ,
punareva mahābhāgaḥ saṁjayaṁ paryapṛcchata.
1. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā mahāprājñaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
suyodhanam punaḥ eva mahābhāgaḥ saṃjayam paryapṛcchata
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken thus to Suyodhana, the greatly wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, that venerable one, again questioned Saṃjaya.
ब्रूहि संजय यच्छेषं वासुदेवादनन्तरम् ।
यदर्जुन उवाच त्वां परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥२॥
2. brūhi saṁjaya yaccheṣaṁ vāsudevādanantaram ,
yadarjuna uvāca tvāṁ paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me.
2. brūhi saṃjaya yat śeṣam vāsudevāt anantaram
yat arjunaḥ uvāca tvām param kautūhalam hi me
2. Saṃjaya, tell me what remains (of the story), specifically what Arjuna said to you after Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) spoke. Indeed, I have immense curiosity.
संजय उवाच ।
वासुदेववचः श्रुत्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
उवाच काले दुर्धर्षो वासुदेवस्य शृण्वतः ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
uvāca kāle durdharṣo vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ.
3. saṃjayaḥ uvāca vāsudevavacaḥ śrutvā kuntīputraḥ
dhananjayaḥ uvāca kāle durdharṣaḥ vāsudevasya śṛṇvataḥ
3. Saṃjaya said: Having heard the words of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), Dhananjaya (Arjuna), Kuntī's son, who was invincible, spoke at that moment, while Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) was listening.
पितामहं शांतनवं धृतराष्ट्रं च संजय ।
द्रोणं कृपं च कर्णं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् ॥४॥
4. pitāmahaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca saṁjaya ,
droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ ca karṇaṁ ca mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam.
4. pitāmahaṃ śāntanavaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ ca saṃjaya
droṇaṃ kṛpaṃ ca karṇaṃ ca mahārājaṃ ca bāhlikaṃ
4. O Sañjaya, (there are) Grandfather Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, and Dhṛtarāṣṭra; Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and the great king Bāhlika.
द्रौणिं च सोमदत्तं च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् ।
दुःशासनं शलं चैव पुरुमित्रं विविंशतिम् ॥५॥
5. drauṇiṁ ca somadattaṁ ca śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam ,
duḥśāsanaṁ śalaṁ caiva purumitraṁ viviṁśatim.
5. drauniṃ ca somadattaṃ ca śakuniṃ ca api saubalaṃ
duḥśāsanaṃ śalaṃ ca eva purumitraṃ viviṃśatiṃ
5. (There are) Drauṇi (Aśvatthāmā), and Somadatta, and Śakuni, the son of Subala; Duḥśāsana, Śala, and also Purumitra and Viviṃśati.
विकर्णं चित्रसेनं च जयत्सेनं च पार्थिवम् ।
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ दुर्मुखं चापि कौरवम् ॥६॥
6. vikarṇaṁ citrasenaṁ ca jayatsenaṁ ca pārthivam ,
vindānuvindāvāvantyau durmukhaṁ cāpi kauravam.
6. vikarṇaṃ citrasenaṃ ca jayatsenaṃ ca pārthivaṃ
vindānuvindau āvantyau durmukhaṃ ca api kauravaṃ
6. (There are) Vikarṇa, and Citrasena, and Jayatsena, the king; Vinda and Anuvinda, the two princes of Avanti; and Durmukha, the Kaurava.
सैन्धवं दुःसहं चैव भूरिश्रवसमेव च ।
भगदत्तं च राजानं जलसंधं च पार्थिवम् ॥७॥
7. saindhavaṁ duḥsahaṁ caiva bhūriśravasameva ca ,
bhagadattaṁ ca rājānaṁ jalasaṁdhaṁ ca pārthivam.
7. saindhavaṃ duḥsahaṃ ca eva bhūriśravasaṃ eva ca
bhagadattaṃ ca rājānaṃ jalasaṃdhaṃ ca pārthivaṃ
7. (There are) Saṃdhava (Jayadratha), Duḥsaha, and also Bhūriśravas; and King Bhagadatta, and King Jalasandha.
ये चाप्यन्ये पार्थिवास्तत्र योद्धुं समागताः कौरवाणां प्रियार्थम् ।
मुमूर्षवः पाण्डवाग्नौ प्रदीप्ते समानीता धार्तराष्ट्रेण सूत ॥८॥
8. ye cāpyanye pārthivāstatra yoddhuṁ; samāgatāḥ kauravāṇāṁ priyārtham ,
mumūrṣavaḥ pāṇḍavāgnau pradīpte; samānītā dhārtarāṣṭreṇa sūta.
8. ye ca api anye pārthivāḥ tatra
yoddhum samāgatāḥ kauravāṇām priyārtham
mumūrṣavaḥ pāṇḍavāgnau pradīpte
samānītāḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa sūta
8. O Sūta, those other kings who have gathered there to fight for the sake of the Kauravas have been brought by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) as if desiring to die in the blazing fire of the Pāṇḍavas.
यथान्यायं कौशलं वन्दनं च समागता मद्वचनेन वाच्याः ।
इदं ब्रूयाः संजय राजमध्ये सुयोधनं पापकृतां प्रधानम् ॥९॥
9. yathānyāyaṁ kauśalaṁ vandanaṁ ca; samāgatā madvacanena vācyāḥ ,
idaṁ brūyāḥ saṁjaya rājamadhye; suyodhanaṁ pāpakṛtāṁ pradhānam.
9. yathānyāyam kauśalam vandanam
ca samāgatāḥ madvacanena vācyāḥ
idam brūyāḥ saṃjaya rājamadhye
suyodhanam pāpakṛtām pradhānam
9. O Sañjaya, in accordance with propriety, my good wishes and greetings should be conveyed to those who have assembled by my words. Furthermore, in the midst of the kings, you should deliver this message to Suyodhana, the chief among evildoers.
अमर्षणं दुर्मतिं राजपुत्रं पापात्मानं धार्तराष्ट्रं सुलुब्धम् ।
सर्वं ममैतद्वचनं समग्रं सहामात्यं संजय श्रावयेथाः ॥१०॥
10. amarṣaṇaṁ durmatiṁ rājaputraṁ; pāpātmānaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraṁ sulubdham ,
sarvaṁ mamaitadvacanaṁ samagraṁ; sahāmātyaṁ saṁjaya śrāvayethāḥ.
10. amarṣaṇam durmatim rājaputram
pāpātmanam dhārtarāṣṭram sulubdham
sarvam mama etat vacanam samagram
sahāmātyam saṃjaya śrāvayetāḥ
10. O Sañjaya, you should make that intolerant, evil-minded prince, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, whose intrinsic nature (ātman) is sinful and who is exceedingly greedy, hear this entire message of mine along with his ministers.
एवं प्रतिष्ठाप्य धनंजयो मां ततोऽर्थवद्धर्मवच्चापि वाक्यम् ।
प्रोवाचेदं वासुदेवं समीक्ष्य पार्थो धीमाँल्लोहितान्तायताक्षः ॥११॥
11. evaṁ pratiṣṭhāpya dhanaṁjayo māṁ; tato'rthavaddharmavaccāpi vākyam ,
provācedaṁ vāsudevaṁ samīkṣya; pārtho dhīmāँllohitāntāyatākṣaḥ.
11. evam pratiṣṭhāpya dhanaṃjayaḥ mām
tataḥ arthavat dharmavat ca api
vākyam provāca idam vāsudevam samīkṣya
pārthaḥ dhīmān lohitāntāyatākṣaḥ
11. Having thus firmly established me (Sañjaya in my mission as messenger), Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) then, after looking towards Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), spoke these meaningful and righteous words, in accordance with natural law (dharma); that intelligent Pārtha (Arjuna) whose wide eyes had reddish corners.
यथा श्रुतं ते वदतो महात्मनो मधुप्रवीरस्य वचः समाहितम् ।
तथैव वाच्यं भवता हि मद्वचः समागतेषु क्षितिपेषु सर्वशः ॥१२॥
12. yathā śrutaṁ te vadato mahātmano; madhupravīrasya vacaḥ samāhitam ,
tathaiva vācyaṁ bhavatā hi madvacaḥ; samāgateṣu kṣitipeṣu sarvaśaḥ.
12. yathā śrutam te vadataḥ mahātmanaḥ
madhupravīrasya vacaḥ samāhitam |
tathā eva vācyam bhavatā hi mat-vacaḥ
samāgateṣu kṣitipeṣu sarvaśaḥ
12. Just as you have heard the profound and well-considered words of the great-souled Madhuprāvīra (Krishna) speaking, so indeed should my words be conveyed by you in their entirety to all the assembled kings.
शराग्निधूमे रथनेमिनादिते धनुःस्रुवेणास्त्रबलापहारिणा ।
यथा न होमः क्रियते महामृधे तथा समेत्य प्रयतध्वमादृताः ॥१३॥
13. śarāgnidhūme rathaneminādite; dhanuḥsruveṇāstrabalāpahāriṇā ,
yathā na homaḥ kriyate mahāmṛdhe; tathā sametya prayatadhvamādṛtāḥ.
13. śara-agni-dhūme ratha-nemi-nādite
dhanuḥ-sruveṇa astra-bala-apahāriṇā
| yathā na homaḥ kriyate mahāmṛdhe
tathā sametya prayatadhvam ādṛtāḥ
13. Just as no sacrificial offering (homa) is performed in the great battle, which is marked by the smoke of arrow-fire, resonated by the roar of chariot wheels, and where the bow serves as a ladle that seizes the strength of weapons; so too, having assembled, you must strive diligently and with great care.
न चेत्प्रयच्छध्वममित्रघातिनो युधिष्ठिरस्यांशमभीप्सितं स्वकम् ।
नयामि वः स्वाश्वपदातिकुञ्जरान्दिशं पितॄणामशिवां शितैः शरैः ॥१४॥
14. na cetprayacchadhvamamitraghātino; yudhiṣṭhirasyāṁśamabhīpsitaṁ svakam ,
nayāmi vaḥ svāśvapadātikuñjarā;ndiśaṁ pitṝṇāmaśivāṁ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
14. na cet prayacchadhvam amitra-ghātinaḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya amśam abhīpsitam svakam
| nayāmi vaḥ sva-aśva-padāti-kuñjarān
diśam pitṝṇām aśivām śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
14. Oh destroyers of enemies, if you do not grant Yudhiṣṭhira his own desired share, I will send you, along with your own horses, foot soldiers, and elephants, to the inauspicious direction of the ancestors (pitṛs) with my sharp arrows.
ततोऽहमामन्त्र्य चतुर्भुजं हरिं धनंजयं चैव नमस्य सत्वरः ।
जवेन संप्राप्त इहामरद्युते तवान्तिकं प्रापयितुं वचो महत् ॥१५॥
15. tato'hamāmantrya caturbhujaṁ hariṁ; dhanaṁjayaṁ caiva namasya satvaraḥ ,
javena saṁprāpta ihāmaradyute; tavāntikaṁ prāpayituṁ vaco mahat.
15. tataḥ aham āmantrya caturbhujam harim
dhanañjayam ca eva namasya satvaraḥ
| javena samprāptaḥ iha amara-dyute
tava antikam prāpayitum vacaḥ mahat
15. Then I, having addressed the four-armed Hari (Krishna) and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), and having quickly paid my respects, have swiftly arrived here, O resplendent one, to deliver a great message to your presence.
