भीष्म उवाच ।
तूष्णीमासीदर्जुनस्तु पवनस्त्वब्रवीत्पुनः ।
शृणु मे ब्राह्मणेष्वेव मुख्यं कर्म जनाधिप ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tūṣṇīmāsīdarjunastu pavanastvabravītpunaḥ ,
śṛṇu me brāhmaṇeṣveva mukhyaṁ karma janādhipa.

1. Bhishma said: But Arjuna remained silent, and Pavana, however, spoke again: "O ruler of men (janādhipa), listen to me concerning the principal action (karma) specifically for Brahmins."
मदस्यास्यमनुप्राप्ता यदा सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः ।
तदेयं च्यवनेनेह हृता तेषां वसुंधरा ॥२॥
2. madasyāsyamanuprāptā yadā sendrā divaukasaḥ ,
tadeyaṁ cyavaneneha hṛtā teṣāṁ vasuṁdharā.
2. madasya āsyam anuprāptāḥ yadā sa-indrāḥ divaukasaḥ
tadā iyam cyavanena iha hṛtā teṣām vasundharā
2. yadā sa-indrāḥ divaukasaḥ madasya āsyam anuprāptāḥ
tadā iyam vasundharā teṣām cyavanena iha hṛtā
2. When the gods (divaukasaḥ), including Indra, became overcome by arrogance, then their earth (vasundharā) was seized here by Chyavana.
उभौ लोकौ हृतौ मत्वा ते देवा दुःखिताभवन् ।
शोकार्ताश्च महात्मानं ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययुः ॥३॥
3. ubhau lokau hṛtau matvā te devā duḥkhitābhavan ,
śokārtāśca mahātmānaṁ brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ yayuḥ.
3. ubhau lokau hṛtau matvā te devāḥ duḥkhitāḥ abhavan
śokārtāḥ ca mahātmānam brahmāṇam śaraṇam yayuḥ
3. te devāḥ ubhau lokau hṛtau matvā duḥkhitāḥ abhavan

3. Considering both worlds (lokau) to have been seized, those gods became distressed. And tormented by sorrow, they went for refuge to the great-souled Brahma.
देवा ऊचुः ।
मदास्यव्यतिषिक्तानामस्माकं लोकपूजित ।
च्यवनेन हृता भूमिः कपैश्चापि दिवं प्रभो ॥४॥
4. devā ūcuḥ ,
madāsyavyatiṣiktānāmasmākaṁ lokapūjita ,
cyavanena hṛtā bhūmiḥ kapaiścāpi divaṁ prabho.
4. devāḥ ūcuḥ madasyavyatiṣiktānām asmākam lokapūjita
cyavanena hṛtā bhūmiḥ kapaiḥ ca api divam prabho
4. devāḥ ūcuḥ he lokapūjita prabho madasyavyatiṣiktānām
asmākam bhūmiḥ cyavanena hṛtā ca api divam kapaiḥ (hṛtā)
4. The gods said: "O worshipped by the worlds, O Lord (prabho), from us, who were overwhelmed by arrogance, the earth (bhūmi) has been taken by Chyavana, and heaven (divam) also by monkeys."
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
गच्छध्वं शरणं विप्रानाशु सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः ।
प्रसाद्य तानुभौ लोकाववाप्स्यथ यथा पुरा ॥५॥
5. brahmovāca ,
gacchadhvaṁ śaraṇaṁ viprānāśu sendrā divaukasaḥ ,
prasādya tānubhau lokāvavāpsyatha yathā purā.
5. brahmā uvāca gacchadhvam śaraṇam viprān āśu sa-indrāḥ
divaukasaḥ prasādya tān ubhau lokau avāpsyatha yathā purā
5. brahmā uvāca he sa-indrāḥ divaukasaḥ āśu viprān śaraṇam
gacchadhvam tān prasādya ubhau lokau yathā purā avāpsyatha
5. Brahma said: "O gods (divaukasaḥ), along with Indra, quickly go for refuge to the brahmins (viprān). Having appeased them, you will regain both worlds (lokau) as before."
ते ययुः शरणं विप्रांस्त ऊचुः काञ्जयामहे ।
इत्युक्तास्ते द्विजान्प्राहुर्जयतेह कपानिति ।
भूगतान्हि विजेतारो वयमित्येव पार्थिव ॥६॥
6. te yayuḥ śaraṇaṁ viprāṁsta ūcuḥ kāñjayāmahe ,
ityuktāste dvijānprāhurjayateha kapāniti ,
bhūgatānhi vijetāro vayamityeva pārthiva.
6. te yayuḥ śaraṇam viprān tān ūcuḥ
kāñjayāmahe | iti uktāḥ te dvijān prāhuḥ
jayata iha kapān iti | bhūgatān
hi vijetāraḥ vayam iti eva pārthiva
6. te viprān śaraṇam yayuḥ te ca ūcuḥ
vayam kāñjayāmahe iti uktāḥ te dvijān
prāhuḥ iha kapān jayata iti pārthiva
hi vayam bhūgatān vijetāraḥ iti eva
6. They (the petitioners) went for refuge to the brahmins. And they said, "We shall be victorious." Thus addressed, those brahmins told the petitioners, "Conquer the Kapas here!" (And the brahmins further declared), "Indeed, O king, we are the conquerors of those who are on earth."
ततः कर्म समारब्धं ब्राह्मणैः कपनाशनम् ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा प्रेषितो दूतो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो धनी कपैः ॥७॥
7. tataḥ karma samārabdhaṁ brāhmaṇaiḥ kapanāśanam ,
tacchrutvā preṣito dūto brāhmaṇebhyo dhanī kapaiḥ.
7. tataḥ karma samārabdham brāhmaṇaiḥ kapanāśanam |
tat śrutvā preṣitaḥ dūtaḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ dhanī kapaiḥ
7. tataḥ kapanāśanam karma brāhmaṇaiḥ samārabdham tat
śrutvā dūtaḥ dhanī kapaiḥ brāhmaṇebhyaḥ preṣitaḥ
7. Thereupon, the ritual for the destruction of the Kapas was commenced by the brahmins. Having heard that, a wealthy messenger was sent by the Kapas to the brahmins.
स च तान्ब्राह्मणानाह धनी कपवचो यथा ।
भवद्भिः सदृशाः सर्वे कपाः किमिह वर्तते ॥८॥
8. sa ca tānbrāhmaṇānāha dhanī kapavaco yathā ,
bhavadbhiḥ sadṛśāḥ sarve kapāḥ kimiha vartate.
8. sa ca tān brāhmaṇān āha dhanī kapavacaḥ yathā |
bhavadbhiḥ sadṛśāḥ sarve kapāḥ kim iha vartate
8. sa ca dhanī kapavacaḥ yathā tān brāhmaṇān āha
sarve kapāḥ bhavadbhiḥ sadṛśāḥ kim iha vartate
8. And that wealthy (messenger) spoke to those brahmins according to the words of the Kapas, (saying): "All Kapas are similar to you (brahmins). What is happening here?"
सर्वे वेदविदः प्राज्ञाः सर्वे च क्रतुयाजिनः ।
सर्वे सत्यव्रताश्चैव सर्वे तुल्या महर्षिभिः ॥९॥
9. sarve vedavidaḥ prājñāḥ sarve ca kratuyājinaḥ ,
sarve satyavratāścaiva sarve tulyā maharṣibhiḥ.
9. sarve vedavidaḥ prājñāḥ sarve ca kratuyājinaḥ |
sarve satyavratāḥ ca eva sarve tulyāḥ maharṣibhiḥ
9. sarve vedavidaḥ sarve ca prājñāḥ sarve ca kratuyājinaḥ
sarve ca eva satyavratāḥ sarve maharṣibhiḥ tulyāḥ
9. All (Kapas) are knowers of the Vedas and wise; all are performers of Vedic rituals. All are truthful in their vows, and all are equal to great sages.
श्रीश्चैव रमते तेषु धारयन्ति श्रियं च ते ।
वृथा दारान्न गच्छन्ति वृथामांसं न भुञ्जते ॥१०॥
10. śrīścaiva ramate teṣu dhārayanti śriyaṁ ca te ,
vṛthā dārānna gacchanti vṛthāmāṁsaṁ na bhuñjate.
10. śrīḥ ca eva ramate teṣu dhārayanti śriyam ca te
vṛthā dārān na gacchanti vṛthāmāṃsam na bhuñjate
10. Prosperity (śrī) indeed delights in them, and they sustain it. They do not approach their spouses aimlessly, nor do they consume meat unnecessarily.
दीप्तमग्निं जुह्वति च गुरूणां वचने स्थिताः ।
सर्वे च नियतात्मानो बालानां संविभागिनः ॥११॥
11. dīptamagniṁ juhvati ca gurūṇāṁ vacane sthitāḥ ,
sarve ca niyatātmāno bālānāṁ saṁvibhāginaḥ.
11. dīptam agnim juhvati ca gurūṇām vacane sthitāḥ
sarve ca niyata-ātmānaḥ bālānām saṃvibhāginaḥ
11. They offer oblations into the blazing fire, and they remain steadfast in the commands of their gurus (guru). All of them are self-controlled (ātman) and share with children.
उपेत्य शकटैर्यान्ति न सेवन्ति रजस्वलाम् ।
अभुक्तवत्सु नाश्नन्ति दिवा चैव न शेरते ॥१२॥
12. upetya śakaṭairyānti na sevanti rajasvalām ,
abhuktavatsu nāśnanti divā caiva na śerate.
12. upetya śakaṭaiḥ yānti na sevanti rajasvalām
abhuktavatsu na aśnanti divā ca eva na śerate
12. They travel by carts, and they do not associate with a menstruating woman. They do not eat before others have eaten, nor do they sleep during the day.
एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्गुणैर्युक्तान्कथं कपान् ।
विजेष्यथ निवर्तध्वं निवृत्तानां शुभं हि वः ॥१३॥
13. etaiścānyaiśca bahubhirguṇairyuktānkathaṁ kapān ,
vijeṣyatha nivartadhvaṁ nivṛttānāṁ śubhaṁ hi vaḥ.
13. etaiḥ ca anyaiḥ ca bahubhiḥ guṇaiḥ yuktān katham
kapān vijeṣyatha nivartadhvam nivṛttānām śubham hi vaḥ
13. How will you conquer these adversaries, endowed as they are with these and many other virtues? Turn back! Indeed, good fortune awaits those among you who retreat.
ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः ।
कपान्वयं विजेष्यामो ये देवास्ते वयं स्मृताः ।
तस्माद्वध्याः कपास्माकं धनिन्याहि यथागतम् ॥१४॥
14. brāhmaṇā ūcuḥ ,
kapānvayaṁ vijeṣyāmo ye devāste vayaṁ smṛtāḥ ,
tasmādvadhyāḥ kapāsmākaṁ dhaninyāhi yathāgatam.
14. brāhmaṇāḥ ūcuḥ kapān vayam vijeṣyāmaḥ ye devāḥ te vayam
smṛtāḥ tasmāt vadhyāḥ kapāḥ asmākam dhanin yāhi yathāgatam
14. brāhmaṇāḥ ūcuḥ vayam kapān vijeṣyāmaḥ ye devāḥ te vayam
smṛtāḥ tasmāt kapāḥ asmākam vadhyāḥ dhanin yathāgatam yāhi
14. The brahmins said, "We shall conquer the Kapas, for we are considered to be the gods. Therefore, these Kapas must be slain by us. O messenger (dhani), go back as you came."
धनी गत्वा कपानाह न वो विप्राः प्रियंकराः ।
गृहीत्वास्त्राण्यथो विप्रान्कपाः सर्वे समाद्रवन् ॥१५॥
15. dhanī gatvā kapānāha na vo viprāḥ priyaṁkarāḥ ,
gṛhītvāstrāṇyatho viprānkapāḥ sarve samādravan.
15. dhanin gatvā kapān āha na vaḥ viprāḥ priyaṃkarāḥ
gṛhītvā astrāṇi atha u viprān kapāḥ sarve samādravan
15. dhanin gatvā kapān āha vaḥ viprāḥ priyaṃkarāḥ na
atha u sarve kapāḥ astrāṇi gṛhītvā viprān samādravan
15. The messenger (dhani), having gone, said to the Kapas, "The brahmins are not beneficial to you." Then, all the Kapas took up their weapons and rushed towards the brahmins.
समुदग्रध्वजान्दृष्ट्वा कपान्सर्वे द्विजातयः ।
व्यसृजञ्ज्वलितानग्नीन्कपानां प्राणनाशनान् ॥१६॥
16. samudagradhvajāndṛṣṭvā kapānsarve dvijātayaḥ ,
vyasṛjañjvalitānagnīnkapānāṁ prāṇanāśanān.
16. samudagradhvajān dṛṣṭvā kapān sarve dvijātayaḥ
vyasṛjan jvalitān agnīn kapānām prāṇanāśanān
16. sarve dvijātayaḥ samudagradhvajān kapān dṛṣṭvā
kapānām prāṇanāśanān jvalitān agnīn vyasṛjan
16. Having seen all the Kapas with their uplifted banners, the twice-born (dvijātayaḥ) released blazing fires that were destructive to the lives of the Kapas.
ब्रह्मसृष्टा हव्यभुजः कपान्भुक्त्वा सनातनाः ।
नभसीव यथाभ्राणि व्यराजन्त नराधिप ।
प्रशशंसुर्द्विजांश्चैव ब्रह्माणं च यशस्विनम् ॥१७॥
17. brahmasṛṣṭā havyabhujaḥ kapānbhuktvā sanātanāḥ ,
nabhasīva yathābhrāṇi vyarājanta narādhipa ,
praśaśaṁsurdvijāṁścaiva brahmāṇaṁ ca yaśasvinam.
17. brahmasṛṣṭāḥ havyabhujaḥ kapān bhuktvā
sanātanāḥ nabhasi iva yathā abhrāṇi
vyarājanta narādhipa praśaśaṃsuḥ
dvijān ca eva brahmāṇam ca yaśasvinam
17. narādhipa brahmasṛṣṭāḥ sanātanāḥ
havyabhujaḥ kapān bhuktvā yathā abhrāṇi
nabhasi iva vyarājanta dvijān eva ca
yaśasvinam brahmāṇam ca praśaśaṃsuḥ
17. O King, the eternal fire-gods (havyabhūjaḥ), created by Brahman, having devoured the Kapas, shone forth just like clouds in the sky. And they praised both the twice-born (dvija) and the glorious Brahman.
तेषां तेजस्तथा वीर्यं देवानां ववृधे ततः ।
अवाप्नुवंश्चामरत्वं त्रिषु लोकेषु पूजितम् ॥१८॥
18. teṣāṁ tejastathā vīryaṁ devānāṁ vavṛdhe tataḥ ,
avāpnuvaṁścāmaratvaṁ triṣu lokeṣu pūjitam.
18. teṣām tejas tathā vīryam devānām vavṛdhe tataḥ
avāpnuvan ca amarātvam triṣu lokeṣu pūjitam
18. tataḥ teṣām devānām tejas tathā vīryam vavṛdhe
ca triṣu lokeṣu pūjitam amarātvam avāpnuvan
18. Thereupon, the energy and prowess of those gods increased. And they attained immortality, which is honored in the three worlds.
इत्युक्तवचनं वायुमर्जुनः प्रत्यभाषत ।
प्रतिपूज्य महाबाहो यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥१९॥
19. ityuktavacanaṁ vāyumarjunaḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
pratipūjya mahābāho yattacchṛṇu narādhipa.
19. iti uktavacanam vāyum arjunaḥ pratyabhāṣata
pratipūjya mahābāho yat tat śṛṇu narādhipa
19. arjunaḥ iti uktavacanam vāyum pratyabhāṣata
mahābāho narādhipa pratipūjya yat tat śṛṇu
19. Arjuna responded to Vayu, whose words were thus. O mighty-armed one, O lord of men, having paid reverence, listen to what that was.
जीवाम्यहं ब्राह्मणार्थे सर्वथा सततं प्रभो ।
ब्रह्मणे ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च प्रणमामि च नित्यशः ॥२०॥
20. jīvāmyahaṁ brāhmaṇārthe sarvathā satataṁ prabho ,
brahmaṇe brāhmaṇebhyaśca praṇamāmi ca nityaśaḥ.
20. jīvāmi aham brāhmaṇārthe sarvathā satatam prabho
brahmaṇe brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca praṇamāmi ca nityaśaḥ
20. prabho aham brāhmaṇārthe sarvathā satatam jīvāmi
ca nityaśaḥ brahmaṇe brāhmaṇebhyaḥ ca praṇamāmi
20. O Lord, I constantly live in every way for the sake of brahmins (brāhmaṇa). And I always bow down to the ultimate reality (brahman) and to brahmins (brāhmaṇa).
दत्तात्रेयप्रसादाच्च मया प्राप्तमिदं यशः ।
लोके च परमा कीर्तिर्धर्मश्च चरितो महान् ॥२१॥
21. dattātreyaprasādācca mayā prāptamidaṁ yaśaḥ ,
loke ca paramā kīrtirdharmaśca carito mahān.
21. dattātreyaprasādāt ca mayā prāptam idam yaśaḥ
loke ca paramā kīrtiḥ dharmaḥ ca caritaḥ mahān
21. ca dattātreyaprasādāt mayā idam yaśaḥ prāptam
ca loke paramā kīrtiḥ ca mahān dharmaḥ caritaḥ
21. And by the grace of Dattātreya, this fame was obtained by me. Also, supreme renown in the world and great (dharma) were (thereby) observed.
अहो ब्राह्मणकर्माणि यथा मारुत तत्त्वतः ।
त्वया प्रोक्तानि कार्त्स्न्येन श्रुतानि प्रयतेन ह ॥२२॥
22. aho brāhmaṇakarmāṇi yathā māruta tattvataḥ ,
tvayā proktāni kārtsnyena śrutāni prayatena ha.
22. aho brāhmaṇakarmāṇi yathā māruta tattvataḥ
tvayā proktāni kārtsnyena śrutāni prayatena ha
22. aho māruta tvayā tattvataḥ kārtsnyena yathā
brāhmaṇakarmāṇi proktāni prayatena ha śrutāni
22. Oh Māruta, indeed, the duties of a brahmin, as truthfully and completely explained by you, have been heard by me with great attention.
वायुरुवाच ।
ब्राह्मणान्क्षत्रधर्मेण पालयस्वेन्द्रियाणि च ।
भृगुभ्यस्ते भयं घोरं तत्तु कालाद्भविष्यति ॥२३॥
23. vāyuruvāca ,
brāhmaṇānkṣatradharmeṇa pālayasvendriyāṇi ca ,
bhṛgubhyaste bhayaṁ ghoraṁ tattu kālādbhaviṣyati.
23. vāyuḥ uvāca brāhmaṇān kṣatradharmeṇa pālayasva indriyāṇi
ca bhṛgubhyaḥ te bhayam ghoram tat tu kālāt bhaviṣyati
23. vāyuḥ uvāca brāhmaṇān kṣatradharmeṇa indriyāṇi ca pālayasva
bhṛgubhyaḥ te ghoram bhayam tat tu kālāt bhaviṣyati
23. Vāyu said: 'Protect the brahmins according to the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a kṣatriya, and also protect your senses. A terrible danger from the Bhṛgus awaits you, which will indeed manifest in due time.'
