ततः कुन्तीसुतो राजा पौरजानपदं जनम् ।
पूजयित्वा यथान्यायमनुजज्ञे गृहान्प्रति ॥१॥

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, the king, son of Kuntī, having honored the city dwellers and country folk appropriately, dismissed them to their homes.
सान्त्वयामास नारीश्च हतवीरा हतेश्वराः ।
विपुलैरर्थदानैश्च तदा पाण्डुसुतो नृपः ॥२॥
2. sāntvayāmāsa nārīśca hatavīrā hateśvarāḥ ,
vipulairarthadānaiśca tadā pāṇḍusuto nṛpaḥ.

2. Then the king, son of Pāṇḍu, consoled the women whose heroes and lords had been slain, (providing comfort) with abundant gifts of wealth.
सोऽभिषिक्तो महाप्राज्ञः प्राप्य राज्यं युधिष्ठिरः ।
अवस्थाप्य नरश्रेष्ठः सर्वाः स्वप्रकृतीस्तदा ॥३॥
3. so'bhiṣikto mahāprājñaḥ prāpya rājyaṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
avasthāpya naraśreṣṭhaḥ sarvāḥ svaprakṛtīstadā.
3. saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ mahāprājñaḥ prāpya rājyam yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
avasthāpya naraśreṣṭhaḥ sarvāḥ svaprakṛtīḥ tadā

3. Then, the greatly wise Yudhishthira, the best of men, having been consecrated and having obtained the kingdom, established all his subjects (prakṛti).
द्विजेभ्यो बलमुख्येभ्यो नैगमेभ्यश्च सर्वशः ।
प्रतिगृह्याशिषो मुख्यास्तदा धर्मभृतां वरः ॥४॥
4. dvijebhyo balamukhyebhyo naigamebhyaśca sarvaśaḥ ,
pratigṛhyāśiṣo mukhyāstadā dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.

4. Then, he, the best among those upholding natural law (dharma), completely received the principal blessings from the twice-born (dvija), from the chiefs of the forces, and from the merchants.
उषित्वा शर्वरीः श्रीमान्पञ्चाशन्नगरोत्तमे ।
समयं कौरवाग्र्यस्य सस्मार पुरुषर्षभः ॥५॥
5. uṣitvā śarvarīḥ śrīmānpañcāśannagarottame ,
samayaṁ kauravāgryasya sasmāra puruṣarṣabhaḥ.

5. The glorious one, the bull among men (puruṣarṣabha), having stayed fifty nights in the best of cities, remembered the agreement of the foremost of the Kauravas.
स निर्ययौ गजपुराद्याजकैः परिवारितः ।
दृष्ट्वा निवृत्तमादित्यं प्रवृत्तं चोत्तरायणम् ॥६॥
6. sa niryayau gajapurādyājakaiḥ parivāritaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā nivṛttamādityaṁ pravṛttaṁ cottarāyaṇam.
6. saḥ niryayau gajapurāt yājakaiḥ parivāritaḥ
dṛṣṭvā nivṛttam ādityam pravṛttam ca uttarāyaṇam
6. saḥ yājakaiḥ parivāritaḥ nivṛttam ādityam ca
uttarāyaṇam pravṛttam dṛṣṭvā gajapurāt niryayau
6. He, surrounded by priests, departed from Gajapura, having observed the sun's return (from its southward journey) and the commencement of the northward course (uttarāyaṇa).
घृतं माल्यं च गन्धांश्च क्षौमाणि च युधिष्ठिरः ।
चन्दनागरुमुख्यानि तथा कालागरूणि च ॥७॥
7. ghṛtaṁ mālyaṁ ca gandhāṁśca kṣaumāṇi ca yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
candanāgarumukhyāni tathā kālāgarūṇi ca.
7. ghṛtam mālyam ca gandhān ca kṣaumāṇi ca Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

7. Yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ghṛtam mālyam ca gandhān ca kṣaumāṇi

7. Yudhiṣṭhira sent ghee, garlands, fragrances, and silk garments, including prominent items like sandalwood and agarwood, and also black agarwood.
प्रस्थाप्य पूर्वं कौन्तेयो भीष्मसंसाधनाय वै ।
माल्यानि च महार्हाणि रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥८॥
8. prasthāpya pūrvaṁ kaunteyo bhīṣmasaṁsādhanāya vai ,
mālyāni ca mahārhāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca.
8. prasthāpya pūrvam kaunteyaḥ bhīṣmasaṃsādhanāya

8. The son of Kuntī first dispatched these (items), along with very valuable garlands and various jewels, for the appeasement of Bhīṣma.
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गान्धारीं च यशस्विनीम् ।
मातरं च पृथां धीमान्भ्रातॄंश्च पुरुषर्षभः ॥९॥
9. dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ puraskṛtya gāndhārīṁ ca yaśasvinīm ,
mātaraṁ ca pṛthāṁ dhīmānbhrātṝṁśca puruṣarṣabhaḥ.
9. dhṛtarāṣṭram puraskṛtya gāndhārīm ca yaśasvinīm
mātaram ca pṛthām dhīmān bhrātṝn ca puruṣarṣabhaḥ

9. The wise one, the best among men (Yudhiṣṭhira), revering Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the glorious Gāndhārī, his mother Pṛthā, and his brothers...
जनार्दनेनानुगतो विदुरेण च धीमता ।
युयुत्सुना च कौरव्यो युयुधानेन चाभिभो ॥१०॥
10. janārdanenānugato vidureṇa ca dhīmatā ,
yuyutsunā ca kauravyo yuyudhānena cābhibho.
10. janārdanena anugataḥ vidureṇa ca dhīmatā
yuyutsunā ca kauravyaḥ yuyudhānena ca abhibho
10. abhibho kauravyaḥ janārdanena ca dhīmatā
vidureṇa ca yuyutsunā ca yuyudhānena ca anugataḥ
10. O lord, the Kuru prince (Yudhiṣṭhira) was accompanied by Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), the wise Vidura, Yuyutsu, and Yuyudhāna.
महता राजभोग्येन परिबर्हेण संवृतः ।
स्तूयमानो महाराज भीष्मस्याग्नीननुव्रजन् ॥११॥
11. mahatā rājabhogyena paribarheṇa saṁvṛtaḥ ,
stūyamāno mahārāja bhīṣmasyāgnīnanuvrajan.
11. mahatā rājabhogyena paribarheṇa saṃvṛtaḥ
stūyamānaḥ mahārāja bhīṣmasya agnīn anuvrajan
11. mahārāja mahatā rājabhogyena paribarheṇa

11. O great king, surrounded by a magnificent retinue befitting a king and being praised, he followed Bhishma's funeral pyres.
निश्चक्राम पुरात्तस्माद्यथा देवपतिस्तथा ।
आससाद कुरुक्षेत्रे ततः शांतनवं नृपम् ॥१२॥
12. niścakrāma purāttasmādyathā devapatistathā ,
āsasāda kurukṣetre tataḥ śāṁtanavaṁ nṛpam.
12. niścakrāma purāt tasmāt yathā devapatiḥ tathā
āsasāda kurukṣetre tataḥ śāṃtanavaṃ nṛpam
12. tasmāt purāt yathā devapatiḥ tathā niścakrāma

12. He departed from that city just as the lord of gods [Indra] would, and then in Kurukshetra he reached Shantanu's son (Bhishma).
उपास्यमानं व्यासेन पाराशर्येण धीमता ।
नारदेन च राजर्षे देवलेनासितेन च ॥१३॥
13. upāsyamānaṁ vyāsena pārāśaryeṇa dhīmatā ,
nāradena ca rājarṣe devalenāsitena ca.
13. upāsyamānaṃ vyāsena pārāśaryeṇa dhīmatā
nāradena ca rājarṣe devalena asitena ca
13. rājarṣe dhīmatā pārāśaryeṇa vyāsena

13. He was being honored by the wise Vyasa, son of Parashara, by Narada, and, O royal sage, by Devala and Asita.
हतशिष्टैर्नृपैश्चान्यैर्नानादेशसमागतैः ।
रक्षिभिश्च महात्मानं रक्ष्यमाणं समन्ततः ॥१४॥
14. hataśiṣṭairnṛpaiścānyairnānādeśasamāgataiḥ ,
rakṣibhiśca mahātmānaṁ rakṣyamāṇaṁ samantataḥ.
14. hataśiṣṭaiḥ nṛpaiḥ ca anyaiḥ nānādeśasamāgataiḥ
rakṣibhiḥ ca mahātmānaṃ rakṣyamāṇaṃ samantataḥ
14. hataśiṣṭaiḥ nṛpaiḥ ca anyaiḥ nānādeśasamāgataiḥ
rakṣibhiḥ ca samantataḥ mahātmānaṃ rakṣyamāṇaṃ
14. The great-souled one (mahātman) was being protected from all sides by the surviving kings, by others who had come from various countries, and by guards.
शयानं वीरशयने ददर्श नृपतिस्ततः ।
ततो रथादवारोहद्भ्रातृभिः सह धर्मराट् ॥१५॥
15. śayānaṁ vīraśayane dadarśa nṛpatistataḥ ,
tato rathādavārohadbhrātṛbhiḥ saha dharmarāṭ.
15. śayānam vīraśayane dadarśa nṛpatiḥ tataḥ tataḥ
rathāt avārohat bhrātṛbhiḥ saha dharmarāṭ
15. The king then saw him lying on a hero's bed (of arrows). After that, the righteous king (dharma rāṭ), along with his brothers, descended from the chariot.
अभिवाद्याथ कौन्तेयः पितामहमरिंदमम् ।
द्वैपायनादीन्विप्रांश्च तैश्च प्रत्यभिनन्दितः ॥१६॥
16. abhivādyātha kaunteyaḥ pitāmahamariṁdamam ,
dvaipāyanādīnviprāṁśca taiśca pratyabhinanditaḥ.
16. abhivādya atha kaunteyaḥ pitāmaham ariṃdamam
dvaipāyana ādīn viprān ca taiḥ ca pratyabhinanditaḥ
16. Then, Kaunteya, the subduer of enemies, having paid homage to his paternal grandfather and the brahmins (vipra) led by Dvaipāyana, was in turn greeted by them.
ऋत्विग्भिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैश्च भ्रातृभिश्च सहाच्युतः ।
आसाद्य शरतल्पस्थमृषिभिः परिवारितम् ॥१७॥
17. ṛtvigbhirbrahmakalpaiśca bhrātṛbhiśca sahācyutaḥ ,
āsādya śaratalpasthamṛṣibhiḥ parivāritam.
17. ṛtvigbhiḥ brahmakalpaiḥ ca bhrātṛbhiḥ ca saha
acyutaḥ āsādya śaratalpastham ṛṣibhiḥ parivāritam
17. Accompanied by Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), his brothers, and priests (ṛtvij) who resembled Brahmā, he approached Bhīṣma, who was lying on the bed of arrows and surrounded by sages (ṛṣi).
अब्रवीद्भरतश्रेष्ठं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
भ्रातृभिः सह कौरव्य शयानं निम्नगासुतम् ॥१८॥
18. abravīdbharataśreṣṭhaṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kauravya śayānaṁ nimnagāsutam.
18. abravīt bharataśreṣṭham dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
bhrātṛbhiḥ saha kauravya śayānam nimnagāsutam
18. King Yudhiṣṭhira, the righteous king (dharma rāja), accompanied by his brothers, addressed the best of the Bhāratas, the son of the river (Bhīṣma), who was lying down, saying, 'O scion of Kuru'.
युधिष्ठिरोऽहं नृपते नमस्ते जाह्नवीसुत ।
शृणोषि चेन्महाबाहो ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhiro'haṁ nṛpate namaste jāhnavīsuta ,
śṛṇoṣi cenmahābāho brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te.
19. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ aham nṛpate namaḥ te jāhnavīsuta
śṛṇoṣi cet mahābāho brūhi kim karavāṇi te
19. nṛpate aham yudhiṣṭhiraḥ jāhnavīsuta te namaḥ
mahābāho cet śṛṇoṣi kim te karavāṇi brūhi
19. O King, I am Yudhishthira. My salutations to you, O son of Jahnavi. O mighty-armed one, if you are able to hear, please tell me what I should do for you.
प्राप्तोऽस्मि समये राजन्नग्नीनादाय ते विभो ।
आचार्या ब्राह्मणाश्चैव ऋत्विजो भ्रातरश्च मे ॥२०॥
20. prāpto'smi samaye rājannagnīnādāya te vibho ,
ācāryā brāhmaṇāścaiva ṛtvijo bhrātaraśca me.
20. prāptaḥ asmi samaye rājan agnīn ādāya te vibho
ācāryāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva ṛtvijaḥ bhrātaraḥ ca me
20. rājan vibho samaye te agnīn ādāya prāptaḥ asmi
me ācāryāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva ṛtvijaḥ bhrātaraḥ ca
20. O King, O mighty one, I have arrived at the opportune moment, bringing your sacred (ritual) fires. My preceptors, the Brahmins, the ritual priests (ṛtvij), and my brothers are all present.
पुत्रश्च ते महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
उपस्थितः सहामात्यो वासुदेवश्च वीर्यवान् ॥२१॥
21. putraśca te mahātejā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
upasthitaḥ sahāmātyo vāsudevaśca vīryavān.
21. putraḥ ca te mahātejāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janeśvaraḥ
upasthitaḥ saha amātyaḥ vāsudevaḥ ca vīryavān
21. te mahātejāḥ janeśvaraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ putraḥ ca
saha amātyaḥ vīryavān vāsudevaḥ ca upasthitaḥ
21. Also present are your greatly radiant son, Dhritarashtra, the lord of men, accompanied by his ministers, and the valiant Vasudeva (Krishna).
हतशिष्टाश्च राजानः सर्वे च कुरुजाङ्गलाः ।
तान्पश्य कुरुशार्दूल समुन्मीलय लोचने ॥२२॥
22. hataśiṣṭāśca rājānaḥ sarve ca kurujāṅgalāḥ ,
tānpaśya kuruśārdūla samunmīlaya locane.
22. hataśiṣṭāḥ ca rājānaḥ sarve ca kurujāṅgalāḥ
tān paśya kuruśārdūla samunmīlaya locane
22. hataśiṣṭāḥ rājānaḥ ca sarve kurujāṅgalāḥ ca

22. And the surviving kings, as well as all the people from the Kurujangala region, are here. O tiger among the Kurus, open your eyes and behold them.
यच्चेह किंचित्कर्तव्यं तत्सर्वं प्रापितं मया ।
यथोक्तं भवता काले सर्वमेव च तत्कृतम् ॥२३॥
23. yacceha kiṁcitkartavyaṁ tatsarvaṁ prāpitaṁ mayā ,
yathoktaṁ bhavatā kāle sarvameva ca tatkṛtam.
23. yat ca iha kiñcit kartavyam tat sarvam prāpitam mayā
| yathā uktam bhavatā kāle sarvam eva ca tat kṛtam
23. yat ca iha kiñcit kartavyam tat sarvam mayā prāpitam
yathā bhavatā kāle uktam ca tat sarvam eva kṛtam
23. And whatever needed to be done here, all that has been accomplished by me. As was stated by you in due time, all that has indeed been done.
एवमुक्तस्तु गाङ्गेयः कुन्तीपुत्रेण धीमता ।
ददर्श भारतान्सर्वान्स्थितान्संपरिवार्य तम् ॥२४॥
24. evamuktastu gāṅgeyaḥ kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā ,
dadarśa bhāratānsarvānsthitānsaṁparivārya tam.
24. evam uktaḥ tu gāṅgeyaḥ kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā |
dadarśa bhāratān sarvān sthitān saṃparivārya tam
24. kuntīputreṇa dhīmatā evam uktaḥ tu gāṅgeyaḥ tam
saṃparivārya sthitān sarvān bhāratān dadarśa
24. Thus addressed by the intelligent son of Kunti (Yudhishthira), Gaṅgeya (Bhishma) saw all the Bharatas standing, surrounding him.
ततश्चलवलिर्भीष्मः प्रगृह्य विपुलं भुजम् ।
ओघमेघस्वनो वाग्मी काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२५॥
25. tataścalavalirbhīṣmaḥ pragṛhya vipulaṁ bhujam ,
oghameghasvano vāgmī kāle vacanamabravīt.
25. tataḥ ca calavaliḥ bhīṣmaḥ pragṛhya vipulam bhujam
| oghameghasvanaḥ vāgmī kāle vacanam abravīt
25. tataḥ ca calavaliḥ bhīṣmaḥ vipulam bhujam pragṛhya
oghameghasvanaḥ vāgmī kāle vacanam abravīt
25. Then Bhishma, his body trembling, grasping his mighty arm, eloquent and with a voice like a thundercloud, spoke words at the proper time.
दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि कौन्तेय सहामात्यो युधिष्ठिर ।
परिवृत्तो हि भगवान्सहस्रांशुर्दिवाकरः ॥२६॥
26. diṣṭyā prāpto'si kaunteya sahāmātyo yudhiṣṭhira ,
parivṛtto hi bhagavānsahasrāṁśurdivākaraḥ.
26. diṣṭyā prāptaḥ asi kaunteya sahāmātyaḥ yudhiṣṭhira
| parivṛttaḥ hi bhagavān sahasrāṃśuḥ divākaraḥ
26. diṣṭyā kaunteya yudhiṣṭhira sahāmātyaḥ asi prāptaḥ
hi bhagavān sahasrāṃśuḥ divākaraḥ parivṛttaḥ
26. Fortunately, O son of Kunti (Yudhishthira), you have arrived with your ministers. For indeed, the glorious thousand-rayed sun, the day-maker, has turned [its course].
अष्टपञ्चाशतं रात्र्यः शयानस्याद्य मे गताः ।
शरेषु निशिताग्रेषु यथा वर्षशतं तथा ॥२७॥
27. aṣṭapañcāśataṁ rātryaḥ śayānasyādya me gatāḥ ,
śareṣu niśitāgreṣu yathā varṣaśataṁ tathā.
27. aṣṭapañcāśatam rātryaḥ śayānasya adya me gatāḥ
śareṣu niśitāgreṣu yathā varṣaśatam tathā
27. me śayānasya adya aṣṭapañcāśatam rātryaḥ gatāḥ
niśitāgreṣu śareṣu yathā varṣaśatam tathā
27. Today, fifty-eight nights have passed for me as I lie upon these sharply pointed arrows; it feels as long as a hundred years.
माघोऽयं समनुप्राप्तो मासः पुण्यो युधिष्ठिर ।
त्रिभागशेषः पक्षोऽयं शुक्लो भवितुमर्हति ॥२८॥
28. māgho'yaṁ samanuprāpto māsaḥ puṇyo yudhiṣṭhira ,
tribhāgaśeṣaḥ pakṣo'yaṁ śuklo bhavitumarhati.
28. māghaḥ ayam samanupāptaḥ māsaḥ puṇyaḥ yudhiṣṭhira
tribhāgaśeṣaḥ pakṣaḥ ayam śuklaḥ bhavitum arhati
28. yudhiṣṭhira ayam puṇyaḥ māghaḥ māsaḥ samanupāptaḥ
ayam śuklaḥ pakṣaḥ tribhāgaśeṣaḥ bhavitum arhati
28. O Yudhishthira, this auspicious month of Magha has now arrived. This bright fortnight should have only its last three days remaining.
एवमुक्त्वा तु गाङ्गेयो धर्मपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रमथामन्त्र्य काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२९॥
29. evamuktvā tu gāṅgeyo dharmaputraṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramathāmantrya kāle vacanamabravīt.
29. evam uktvā tu gāṅgeyaḥ dharmaputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram
dhṛtarāṣṭram atha āmantrya kāle vacanam abravīt
29. gāṅgeyaḥ evam uktvā tu dharmaputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram
atha dhṛtarāṣṭram āmantrya kāle vacanam abravīt
29. Having thus spoken to Yudhishthira, the son of dharma (dharma), Bhishma (Gāṅgeya) then addressed Dhṛtarāṣṭra and spoke suitable words at the appropriate moment.
राजन्विदितधर्मोऽसि सुनिर्णीतार्थसंशयः ।
बहुश्रुता हि ते विप्रा बहवः पर्युपासिताः ॥३०॥
30. rājanviditadharmo'si sunirṇītārthasaṁśayaḥ ,
bahuśrutā hi te viprā bahavaḥ paryupāsitāḥ.
30. rājan viditadharmaḥ asi sunirṇītārthasaṃśayaḥ

30. O King, you are knowledgeable in natural law (dharma), and your doubts concerning the true meaning of things are well-resolved. For indeed, many highly learned brahmins have been attended by you.
वेदशास्त्राणि सर्वाणि धर्मांश्च मनुजेश्वर ।
वेदांश्च चतुरः साङ्गान्निखिलेनावबुध्यसे ॥३१॥
31. vedaśāstrāṇi sarvāṇi dharmāṁśca manujeśvara ,
vedāṁśca caturaḥ sāṅgānnikhilenāvabudhyase.

vedān ca caturaḥ sāṅgān nikhilena avabudhyase
31. manujeśvara,
sarvāṇi vedaśāstrāṇi ca,
dharmān ca,
sāṅgān caturaḥ vedān nikhilena avabudhyase
31. O lord of men, you completely understand all the Vedic scriptures and treatises, the natural laws (dharma), and the four Vedas along with all their auxiliary branches.
न शोचितव्यं कौरव्य भवितव्यं हि तत्तथा ।
श्रुतं देवरहस्यं ते कृष्णद्वैपायनादपि ॥३२॥
32. na śocitavyaṁ kauravya bhavitavyaṁ hi tattathā ,
śrutaṁ devarahasyaṁ te kṛṣṇadvaipāyanādapi.
32. na śocitavyam kauravya bhavitavyam hi tat tathā
śrutam devarahasyam te kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāt api
32. kauravya,
tat tathā hi bhavitavyam.
na śocitavyam.
kṛṣṇadvaipāyanāt api te devarahasyam śrutam
32. O scion of Kuru, it should not be grieved over, for indeed, it was destined to be so. You have heard the divine mystery even from Krishna Dvaipayana.
यथा पाण्डोः सुता राजंस्तथैव तव धर्मतः ।
तान्पालय स्थितो धर्मे गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतान् ॥३३॥
33. yathā pāṇḍoḥ sutā rājaṁstathaiva tava dharmataḥ ,
tānpālaya sthito dharme guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratān.
33. yathā pāṇḍoḥ sutā rājan tathā eva tava dharmataḥ
tān pālayā sthitaḥ dharme guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratān
33. rājan,
yathā pāṇḍoḥ sutā tava dharmataḥ (santi),
tathā eva (tvam) dharme sthitaḥ (san),
guruśuśrūṣaṇe ratān tān pālayā
33. O king, just as Pandu's sons are yours by natural law (dharma), so indeed you should protect them, for they are established in natural law (dharma) and devoted to serving their elders.
धर्मराजो हि शुद्धात्मा निदेशे स्थास्यते तव ।
आनृशंस्यपरं ह्येनं जानामि गुरुवत्सलम् ॥३४॥
34. dharmarājo hi śuddhātmā nideśe sthāsyate tava ,
ānṛśaṁsyaparaṁ hyenaṁ jānāmi guruvatsalam.
34. dharmarājaḥ hi śuddhātmā nideśe sthāsyate tava
ānṛśaṁsyaparam hi enam jānāmi guruvatsalam
34. dharmarājaḥ śuddhātmā hi tava nideśe sthāsyate.

34. Indeed, Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira), the pure-souled king of natural law (dharma), will abide by your command. For I know him to be supremely compassionate and devoted to his elders (guru).
तव पुत्रा दुरात्मानः क्रोधलोभपरायणाः ।
ईर्ष्याभिभूता दुर्वृत्तास्तान्न शोचितुमर्हसि ॥३५॥
35. tava putrā durātmānaḥ krodhalobhaparāyaṇāḥ ,
īrṣyābhibhūtā durvṛttāstānna śocitumarhasi.
35. tava putrāḥ durātmānaḥ krodhalobhaparāyaṇāḥ
īrṣyābhibhūtāḥ durvṛttāḥ tān na śocitum arhasi
35. tava putrāḥ durātmānaḥ krodhalobhaparāyaṇāḥ

35. Your sons are evil-minded (ātman), given over to anger and greed, overcome by envy, and ill-behaved. You should not grieve for them.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा वचनं धृतराष्ट्रं मनीषिणम् ।
वासुदेवं महाबाहुमभ्यभाषत कौरवः ॥३६॥
36. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etāvaduktvā vacanaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ manīṣiṇam ,
vāsudevaṁ mahābāhumabhyabhāṣata kauravaḥ.
36. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca etāvat uktvā vacanam dhṛtarāṣṭram
manīṣiṇam vāsudevam mahābāhum abhyabhāṣata kauravaḥ

36. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken these words to the wise Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the Kuru (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) then addressed Vāsudeva, the mighty-armed (Krishna).
भगवन्देवदेवेश सुरासुरनमस्कृत ।
त्रिविक्रम नमस्तेऽस्तु शङ्खचक्रगदाधर ॥३७॥
37. bhagavandevadeveśa surāsuranamaskṛta ,
trivikrama namaste'stu śaṅkhacakragadādhara.

37. O Blessed One (Bhagavan), Lord of lords, worshipped by gods and demons! O Trivikrama, salutations to you, O bearer of the conch, discus, and mace!
अनुजानीहि मां कृष्ण वैकुण्ठ पुरुषोत्तम ।
रक्ष्याश्च ते पाण्डवेया भवान्ह्येषां परायणम् ॥३८॥
38. anujānīhi māṁ kṛṣṇa vaikuṇṭha puruṣottama ,
rakṣyāśca te pāṇḍaveyā bhavānhyeṣāṁ parāyaṇam.
38. anujānīhi mām kṛṣṇa vaikuṇṭha puruṣottama
rakṣyāḥ ca te pāṇḍaveyāḥ bhavān hi eṣām parāyaṇam
38. kṛṣṇa vaikuṇṭha puruṣottama mām anujānīhi ca
te pāṇḍaveyāḥ rakṣyāḥ hi bhavān eṣām parāyaṇam
38. O Krishna, O Vaikuṇṭha, O Supreme Person (puruṣa), permit me! The Pāṇḍavas are to be protected by you, for you are indeed their ultimate refuge.
उक्तवानस्मि दुर्बुद्धिं मन्दं दुर्योधनं पुरा ।
यतः कृष्णस्ततो धर्मो यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥३९॥
39. uktavānasmi durbuddhiṁ mandaṁ duryodhanaṁ purā ,
yataḥ kṛṣṇastato dharmo yato dharmastato jayaḥ.
39. uktavān asmi durbuddhim mandam duryodhanam purā
yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ dharmaḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
39. purā aham durbuddhim mandam duryodhanam uktavān asmi
yataḥ kṛṣṇaḥ tataḥ dharmaḥ yataḥ dharmaḥ tataḥ jayaḥ
39. Formerly, I told the evil-minded, foolish Duryodhana, 'Where Kṛṣṇa is, there is natural law (dharma); where natural law (dharma) is, there is victory.'
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन पुत्र संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ।
संधानस्य परः कालस्तवेति च पुनः पुनः ॥४०॥
40. vāsudevena tīrthena putra saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
saṁdhānasya paraḥ kālastaveti ca punaḥ punaḥ.

saṃdhānasya paraḥ kālaḥ tava iti ca punaḥ punaḥ
40. putra vāsudevena tīrthena pāṇḍavaiḥ saṃśāmya

40. 'O son, through Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) as an intermediary, make peace with the Pāṇḍavas; for you, it is the opportune time for reconciliation.' Thus [I told him] again and again.
न च मे तद्वचो मूढः कृतवान्स सुमन्दधीः ।
घातयित्वेह पृथिवीं ततः स निधनं गतः ॥४१॥
41. na ca me tadvaco mūḍhaḥ kṛtavānsa sumandadhīḥ ,
ghātayitveha pṛthivīṁ tataḥ sa nidhanaṁ gataḥ.
41. na ca me tat vacaḥ mūḍhaḥ kṛtavān saḥ sumandadhīḥ
ghātayitvā iha pṛthivīm tataḥ saḥ nidhanam gataḥ
41. ca na saḥ mūḍhaḥ sumandadhīḥ me tat vacaḥ kṛtavān.
iha pṛthivīm ghātayitvā tataḥ saḥ nidhanam gataḥ
41. And that deluded, very dull-witted one, Duryodhana, did not heed my words. Having caused the destruction of kings on this earth, he then met his end.
त्वां च जानाम्यहं वीर पुराणमृषिसत्तमम् ।
नरेण सहितं देवं बदर्यां सुचिरोषितम् ॥४२॥
42. tvāṁ ca jānāmyahaṁ vīra purāṇamṛṣisattamam ,
nareṇa sahitaṁ devaṁ badaryāṁ suciroṣitam.
42. tvām ca jānāmi aham vīra purāṇam ṛṣisattamam
nareṇa sahitam devam badaryām sucira uṣitam
42. aham,
vīra,
tvām ca purāṇam ṛṣisattamam nareṇa sahitam badaryām sucira uṣitam devam jānāmi
42. And I know you, O hero, as the ancient, foremost sage, the divine being who resided for a very long time in Badarī, accompanied by Nara.
तथा मे नारदः प्राह व्यासश्च सुमहातपाः ।
नरनारायणावेतौ संभूतौ मनुजेष्विति ॥४३॥
43. tathā me nāradaḥ prāha vyāsaśca sumahātapāḥ ,
naranārāyaṇāvetau saṁbhūtau manujeṣviti.
43. tathā me nāradaḥ prāha vyāsaḥ ca sumahātapāḥ
naranārāyaṇau etau saṃbhūtau manujeṣu iti
43. Thus, Narada and Vyasa, great in austerities (tapas), told me that these two, Nara and Narayana, were born among humans.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
अनुजानामि भीष्म त्वां वसूनाप्नुहि पार्थिव ।
न तेऽस्ति वृजिनं किंचिन्मया दृष्टं महाद्युते ॥४४॥
44. vāsudeva uvāca ,
anujānāmi bhīṣma tvāṁ vasūnāpnuhi pārthiva ,
na te'sti vṛjinaṁ kiṁcinmayā dṛṣṭaṁ mahādyute.
44. vāsudevaḥ uvāca anujānāmi bhīṣma tvām vasūn āpnuhi
pārthiva na te asti vṛjinam kiñcit mayā dṛṣṭam mahādyute
44. Vasudeva said, 'O Bhishma, O king, I grant you permission. Go and attain the Vasus. No fault of any kind has been observed by me in you, O greatly radiant one.'
पितृभक्तोऽसि राजर्षे मार्कण्डेय इवापरः ।
तेन मृत्युस्तव वशे स्थितो भृत्य इवानतः ॥४५॥
45. pitṛbhakto'si rājarṣe mārkaṇḍeya ivāparaḥ ,
tena mṛtyustava vaśe sthito bhṛtya ivānataḥ.
45. pitṛbhaktaḥ asi rājarṣe mārkaṇḍeyaḥ iva aparaḥ
tena mṛtyuḥ tava vaśe sthitaḥ bhṛtyaḥ iva ānataḥ
45. O royal sage, you are devoted to your ancestors, like another Markandeya. For this reason, Death remains under your command, bowing down like a servant.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तु गाङ्गेयः पाण्डवानिदमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रमुखांश्चापि सर्वान्ससुहृदस्तथा ॥४६॥
46. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktastu gāṅgeyaḥ pāṇḍavānidamabravīt ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramukhāṁścāpi sarvānsasuhṛdastathā.
46. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ tu gāṅgeyaḥ pāṇḍavān idam
abravīt dhṛtarāṣṭramukhān ca api sarvān sasuhṛdaḥ tathā
46. Vaishampayana said, 'Thus addressed, Bhishma (son of Ganga) then spoke the following to the Pandavas, as well as to all those headed by Dhritarashtra and their allies.'
प्राणानुत्स्रष्टुमिच्छामि तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हथ ।
सत्ये प्रयतितव्यं वः सत्यं हि परमं बलम् ॥४७॥
47. prāṇānutsraṣṭumicchāmi tanmānujñātumarhatha ,
satye prayatitavyaṁ vaḥ satyaṁ hi paramaṁ balam.
47. prāṇān utsraṣṭum icchāmi tat mām anujñātum arhatha
satye prayatitavyaṃ vaḥ satyaṃ hi paramaṃ balam
47. aham prāṇān utsraṣṭum icchāmi tat mām anujñātum
arhatha vaḥ satye prayatitavyam hi satyam paramaṃ balam
47. I wish to give up my vital breaths, therefore you ought to permit me. You all should strive for truth, for truth is indeed the supreme strength.
आनृशंस्यपरैर्भाव्यं सदैव नियतात्मभिः ।
ब्रह्मण्यैर्धर्मशीलैश्च तपोनीत्यैश्च भारत ॥४८॥
48. ānṛśaṁsyaparairbhāvyaṁ sadaiva niyatātmabhiḥ ,
brahmaṇyairdharmaśīlaiśca taponītyaiśca bhārata.
48. ānṛśaṃsyaparaiḥ bhāvyaṃ sadā eva niyatātmabhiḥ
brāhmaṇyaiḥ dharmaśīlaiḥ ca taponītyaiḥ ca bhārata
48. bhārata ānṛśaṃsyaparaiḥ niyatātmabhiḥ brāhmaṇyaiḥ
dharmaśīlaiḥ ca taponītyaiḥ ca sadā eva bhāvyaṃ
48. O Bhārata, one should always be devoted to non-cruelty, self-controlled (ātman), benevolent to brahmins, of righteous character (dharma), and dedicated to asceticism (tapas) and ethical conduct.
इत्युक्त्वा सुहृदः सर्वान्संपरिष्वज्य चैव ह ।
पुनरेवाब्रवीद्धीमान्युधिष्ठिरमिदं वचः ॥४९॥
49. ityuktvā suhṛdaḥ sarvānsaṁpariṣvajya caiva ha ,
punarevābravīddhīmānyudhiṣṭhiramidaṁ vacaḥ.
49. iti uktvā suhṛdaḥ sarvān saṃpariṣvajya ca eva ha
punaḥ eva abravīt dhīmān yudhiṣṭhiram idaṃ vacaḥ
49. dhīmān iti uktvā sarvān suhṛdaḥ ca eva ha
saṃpariṣvajya punaḥ eva yudhiṣṭhiram idaṃ vacaḥ abravīt
49. Having thus spoken, and indeed having fully embraced all his friends, the wise one again spoke these words to Yudhiṣṭhira.
ब्राह्मणाश्चैव ते नित्यं प्राज्ञाश्चैव विशेषतः ।
आचार्या ऋत्विजश्चैव पूजनीया नराधिप ॥५०॥
50. brāhmaṇāścaiva te nityaṁ prājñāścaiva viśeṣataḥ ,
ācāryā ṛtvijaścaiva pūjanīyā narādhipa.
50. brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva te nityaṃ prājñāḥ ca eva viśeṣataḥ
ācāryāḥ ṛtvijaḥ ca eva pūjanīyāḥ narādhipa
50. narādhipa te brāhmaṇāḥ ca eva nityaṃ prājñāḥ ca
eva viśeṣataḥ ācāryāḥ ṛtvijaḥ ca eva pūjanīyāḥ
50. O Lord of men, those brahmins, and indeed especially the wise ones, as well as the teachers and (Vedic) priests, are always to be honored.
