रामं द्रक्ष्यसि वत्से त्वं जामदग्न्यं महावने ।
उग्रे तपसि वर्तन्तं सत्यसंधं महाबलम् ॥१॥

rāmaṁ drakṣyasi vatse tvaṁ jāmadagnyaṁ mahāvane ,
ugre tapasi vartantaṁ satyasaṁdhaṁ mahābalam.

1. Hotravāhana said: "O dear daughter, you will see Rāma, the son of Jamadagni (Jāmadagnya), in the great forest. He will be engaged in severe spiritual discipline (tapas), steadfast in his vows, and possessed of immense strength."
महेन्द्रे वै गिरिश्रेष्ठे रामं नित्यमुपासते ।
ऋषयो वेदविदुषो गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ॥२॥
2. mahendre vai giriśreṣṭhe rāmaṁ nityamupāsate ,
ṛṣayo vedaviduṣo gandharvāpsarasastathā.
2. mahendre vai giriśreṣṭhe rāmam nityam upāsate
ṛṣayaḥ vedaviduṣaḥ gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā

2. Indeed, on Mahendra, the foremost among mountains, sages, experts in the Vedas, and also Gandharvas and Apsarases constantly worship (upāsate) Rāma.
तत्र गच्छस्व भद्रं ते ब्रूयाश्चैनं वचो मम ।
अभिवाद्य पूर्वं शिरसा तपोवृद्धं दृढव्रतम् ॥३॥
3. tatra gacchasva bhadraṁ te brūyāścainaṁ vaco mama ,
abhivādya pūrvaṁ śirasā tapovṛddhaṁ dṛḍhavratam.
3. tatra gacchasva bhadram te brūyāḥ ca enam vacaḥ mama
abhivādya pūrvam śirasā tapovṛddham dṛḍhavratam
3. te bhadram tatra gacchasva pūrvam śirasā tapovṛddham

3. Go there; good fortune be with you. First, bowing your head, speak my words to him who is advanced in asceticism (tapas) and firm in his vows.
ब्रूयाश्चैनं पुनर्भद्रे यत्ते कार्यं मनीषितम् ।
मयि संकीर्तिते रामः सर्वं तत्ते करिष्यति ॥४॥
4. brūyāścainaṁ punarbhadre yatte kāryaṁ manīṣitam ,
mayi saṁkīrtite rāmaḥ sarvaṁ tatte kariṣyati.
4. brūyāḥ ca enam punaḥ bhadre yat te kāryam manīṣitam
mayi saṃkīrtite rāmaḥ sarvam tat te kariṣyati
4. bhadre ca punaḥ enam brūyāḥ yat te manīṣitam kāryam
mayi saṃkīrtite rāmaḥ tat sarvam te kariṣyati
4. And again, O blessed one, tell him whatever task you desire. When I am properly announced to him, Rama will accomplish all that for you.
मम रामः सखा वत्से प्रीतियुक्तः सुहृच्च मे ।
जमदग्निसुतो वीरः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥५॥
5. mama rāmaḥ sakhā vatse prītiyuktaḥ suhṛcca me ,
jamadagnisuto vīraḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.
5. mama rāmaḥ sakhā vatse prītiyuktaḥ suhṛt ca me
jamadagnisutaḥ vīraḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ
5. vatse mama rāmaḥ me sakhā ca prītiyuktaḥ suhṛt
jamadagnisutaḥ vīraḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtām varaḥ
5. My Rama (Paraśurāma) is my friend, O dear child, and he is full of affection, a well-wisher to me. He is the heroic son of Jamadagni, the foremost among all who bear weapons.
एवं ब्रुवति कन्यां तु पार्थिवे होत्रवाहने ।
अकृतव्रणः प्रादुरासीद्रामस्यानुचरः प्रियः ॥६॥
6. evaṁ bruvati kanyāṁ tu pārthive hotravāhane ,
akṛtavraṇaḥ prādurāsīdrāmasyānucaraḥ priyaḥ.
6. evam bruvati kanyām tu pārthive hotravāhane
akṛtavraṇaḥ prādurāsīt rāmasya anucaraḥ priyaḥ
6. pārthive hotravāhane kanyām evam bruvati tu
rāmasya priyaḥ anucaraḥ akṛtavraṇaḥ prādurāsīt
6. While King Hotravāhana was thus speaking to the maiden, Akṛtavraṇa, Rama's dear attendant, appeared.
ततस्ते मुनयः सर्वे समुत्तस्थुः सहस्रशः ।
स च राजा वयोवृद्धः सृञ्जयो होत्रवाहनः ॥७॥
7. tataste munayaḥ sarve samuttasthuḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
sa ca rājā vayovṛddhaḥ sṛñjayo hotravāhanaḥ.
7. tataḥ te munayaḥ sarve samuttasthuḥ saḥ
ca rājā vayovṛddhaḥ sṛñjayaḥ hotravāhanaḥ
7. tataḥ sarve te munayaḥ sahasraśaḥ samuttasthuḥ
ca saḥ vayovṛddhaḥ rājā sṛñjayaḥ hotravāhanaḥ
7. Then, all those sages rose up by thousands, and so did the aged King Sṛñjaya Hotravāhana.
ततः पृष्ट्वा यथान्यायमन्योन्यं ते वनौकसः ।
सहिता भरतश्रेष्ठ निषेदुः परिवार्य तम् ॥८॥
8. tataḥ pṛṣṭvā yathānyāyamanyonyaṁ te vanaukasaḥ ,
sahitā bharataśreṣṭha niṣeduḥ parivārya tam.
8. tataḥ pṛṣṭvā yathānyāyam anyonyam te vanaukasaḥ
sahitāḥ bharataśreṣṭha niṣeduḥ parivārya tam
8. bharataśreṣṭha tataḥ te vanaukasaḥ anyonyam

8. Then, O best of the Bharatas, those forest-dwelling sages, having properly inquired of each other, sat down together, surrounding him (the king).
ततस्ते कथयामासुः कथास्तास्ता मनोरमाः ।
कान्ता दिव्याश्च राजेन्द्र प्रीतिहर्षमुदा युताः ॥९॥
9. tataste kathayāmāsuḥ kathāstāstā manoramāḥ ,
kāntā divyāśca rājendra prītiharṣamudā yutāḥ.
9. tataḥ te kathayāmāsuḥ kathāḥ tāḥ tāḥ manoramāḥ
kāntāḥ divyāḥ ca rājendra prītiharṣamudā yutāḥ

9. Then, O king of kings, they recounted those various charming, beautiful, and divine stories, which were full of affection, joy, and delight.
ततः कथान्ते राजर्षिर्महात्मा होत्रवाहनः ।
रामं श्रेष्ठं महर्षीणामपृच्छदकृतव्रणम् ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ kathānte rājarṣirmahātmā hotravāhanaḥ ,
rāmaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ maharṣīṇāmapṛcchadakṛtavraṇam.
10. tataḥ kathānte rājarṣiḥ mahātmā hotravāhanaḥ
rāmam śreṣṭham maharṣīṇām apṛcchat akṛtavraṇam
10. tataḥ kathānte mahātmā rājarṣiḥ hotravāhanaḥ
maharṣīṇām śreṣṭham akṛtavraṇam rāmam apṛcchat
10. Then, at the conclusion of the stories, the great-souled royal sage Hotravāhana questioned Rama, who was the foremost among the great sages and free from injury.
क्व संप्रति महाबाहो जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान् ।
अकृतव्रण शक्यो वै द्रष्टुं वेदविदां वरः ॥११॥
11. kva saṁprati mahābāho jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān ,
akṛtavraṇa śakyo vai draṣṭuṁ vedavidāṁ varaḥ.
11. kva samprati mahābāho jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān
akṛtavraṇa śakyaḥ vai draṣṭum vedavidām varaḥ
11. महाबाहो अकृतव्रण संप्रति प्रतापवान् जामदग्न्यः
क्व? वेदविदाम् वरः द्रष्टुम् वै शक्यः (अस्ति)?
11. O mighty-armed one, where is the valorous Jāmadagnya (Parashurama) now? O Akṛtavraṇa, is that foremost expert among the knowers of the Vedas indeed possible to see?
अकृतव्रण उवाच ।
भवन्तमेव सततं रामः कीर्तयति प्रभो ।
सृञ्जयो मे प्रियसखो राजर्षिरिति पार्थिव ॥१२॥
12. akṛtavraṇa uvāca ,
bhavantameva satataṁ rāmaḥ kīrtayati prabho ,
sṛñjayo me priyasakho rājarṣiriti pārthiva.
12. akṛtavraṇa uvāca bhavantam eva satatam rāmaḥ kīrtayati
prabho sṛñjayaḥ me priyasakhaḥ rājarṣiḥ iti pārthiva
12. अकृतव्रण उवाच: प्रभो पार्थिव रामः भवन्तम् एव सततम् (मम) प्रियसखः राजर्षिः सृञ्जयः इति कीर्तयति।
12. Akṛtavraṇa said: 'O lord, O king, Rāma constantly extols you as Sṛñjaya, my dear friend and royal sage.'
इह रामः प्रभाते श्वो भवितेति मतिर्मम ।
द्रष्टास्येनमिहायान्तं तव दर्शनकाङ्क्षया ॥१३॥
13. iha rāmaḥ prabhāte śvo bhaviteti matirmama ,
draṣṭāsyenamihāyāntaṁ tava darśanakāṅkṣayā.
13. iha rāmaḥ prabhāte śvaḥ bhavitā iti matiḥ mama
draṣṭā asi enam iha āyāntam tava darśanakāṅkṣayā
13. मम मतिः इति (यत्) रामः श्वः प्रभाते इह भवितातव दर्शनकाङ्क्षया इह आयान्तम् एनम् (त्वम्) द्रष्टा असि।
13. It is my opinion that Rāma will be here tomorrow morning. You will see him coming here with the desire to see you.
इयं च कन्या राजर्षे किमर्थं वनमागता ।
कस्य चेयं तव च का भवतीच्छामि वेदितुम् ॥१४॥
14. iyaṁ ca kanyā rājarṣe kimarthaṁ vanamāgatā ,
kasya ceyaṁ tava ca kā bhavatīcchāmi veditum.
14. iyam ca kanyā rājarṣe kim artham vanam āgatā
kasya ca iyam tava ca kā bhavatī icchāmi veditum
14. राजर्षे इयम् कन्या च किम् अर्थम् वनम् आगता? इयम् च कस्य? च तव का भवती (अस्ति)? वेदितुम् इच्छामि।
14. O royal sage, why has this maiden come to the forest? And whose is she? And who is this lady of yours? I wish to know.
होत्रवाहन उवाच ।
दौहित्रीयं मम विभो काशिराजसुता शुभा ।
ज्येष्ठा स्वयंवरे तस्थौ भगिनीभ्यां सहानघ ॥१५॥
15. hotravāhana uvāca ,
dauhitrīyaṁ mama vibho kāśirājasutā śubhā ,
jyeṣṭhā svayaṁvare tasthau bhaginībhyāṁ sahānagha.
15. hotravāhanaḥ uvāca mama dauhitrīyam vibho kāśirājasutā
śubhā jyeṣṭhā svayaṃvare tasthau bhaginībhyām saha anagha
15. hotravāhanaḥ uvāca vibho anagha mama dauhitrīyam śubhā
kāśirājasutā jyeṣṭhā bhaginībhyām saha svayaṃvare tasthau
15. Hotravāhana said: "O mighty one, O sinless one, my granddaughter, the beautiful eldest daughter of the King of Kashi, stood in the `svayaṃvara` with her two sisters."
इयमम्बेति विख्याता ज्येष्ठा काशिपतेः सुता ।
अम्बिकाम्बालिके त्वन्ये यवीयस्यौ तपोधन ॥१६॥
16. iyamambeti vikhyātā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā ,
ambikāmbālike tvanye yavīyasyau tapodhana.
16. iyam ambā iti vikhyātā jyeṣṭhā kāśipateḥ sutā
ambikā ambālike tu anye yavīyasyau tapodhana
16. tapodhana iyam kāśipateḥ jyeṣṭhā sutā ambā iti
vikhyātā tu anye ambikā ambālike yavīyasyau
16. O ascetic (tapodhana), this eldest daughter of the King of Kashi is renowned as Ambā; the other two, younger ones, are Ambikā and Ambālikā.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं काशिपुर्यां ततोऽभवत् ।
कन्यानिमित्तं ब्रह्मर्षे तत्रासीदुत्सवो महान् ॥१७॥
17. sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ kāśipuryāṁ tato'bhavat ,
kanyānimittaṁ brahmarṣe tatrāsīdutsavo mahān.
17. sametam pārthivam kṣatram kāśipuryām tataḥ abhavat
kanyānimittam brahmarṣe tatra āsīt utsavaḥ mahān
17. brahmarṣe tataḥ sametam pārthivam kṣatram kanyānimittam
kāśipuryām abhavat tatra mahān utsavaḥ āsīt
17. O Brahmarṣi, then the assembled royal warriors arrived in the city of Kashi for the sake of the maidens, and a great festival took place there.
ततः किल महावीर्यो भीष्मः शांतनवो नृपान् ।
अवाक्षिप्य महातेजास्तिस्रः कन्या जहार ताः ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ kila mahāvīryo bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo nṛpān ,
avākṣipya mahātejāstisraḥ kanyā jahāra tāḥ.
18. tataḥ kila mahāvīryaḥ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ nṛpān
avākṣipya mahātejāḥ tisraḥ kanyāḥ jahāra tāḥ
18. tataḥ kila mahāvīryaḥ mahātejāḥ śāntanavaḥ
bhīṣmaḥ nṛpān avākṣipya tāḥ tisraḥ kanyāḥ jahāra
18. Then, it is said, the immensely powerful and glorious Bhishma, son of Shantanu, having repelled the kings, carried away those three maidens.
निर्जित्य पृथिवीपालानथ भीष्मो गजाह्वयम् ।
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा कन्याभिः सह भारत ॥१९॥
19. nirjitya pṛthivīpālānatha bhīṣmo gajāhvayam ,
ājagāma viśuddhātmā kanyābhiḥ saha bhārata.
19. nirjitya pṛthivīpālān atha bhīṣmaḥ gajähvayam
ājagāma viśuddhātmā kanyābhiḥ saha bhārata
19. bhārata atha viśuddhātmā bhīṣmaḥ pṛthivīpālān
nirjitya kanyābhiḥ saha gajähvayam ājagāma
19. Then, O descendant of Bharata, the pure-souled Bhishma, having conquered the kings, returned to Hastinapura with the maidens.
सत्यवत्यै निवेद्याथ विवाहार्थमनन्तरम् ।
भ्रातुर्विचित्रवीर्यस्य समाज्ञापयत प्रभुः ॥२०॥
20. satyavatyai nivedyātha vivāhārthamanantaram ,
bhrāturvicitravīryasya samājñāpayata prabhuḥ.
20. satyavatyai nivedya atha vivāhārtham anantaram
bhrātuḥ vicitravīryasya samājñāpayata prabhuḥ
20. atha prabhuḥ satyavatyai nivedya anantaram
bhrātuḥ vicitravīryasya vivāhārtham samājñāpayata
20. Then, having presented (the maidens) to Satyavati, the lord (Bhishma) subsequently commanded (preparations) for his brother Vichitravirya's marriage.
ततो वैवाहिकं दृष्ट्वा कन्येयं समुपार्जितम् ।
अब्रवीत्तत्र गाङ्गेयं मन्त्रिमध्ये द्विजर्षभ ॥२१॥
21. tato vaivāhikaṁ dṛṣṭvā kanyeyaṁ samupārjitam ,
abravīttatra gāṅgeyaṁ mantrimadhye dvijarṣabha.
21. tataḥ vaivāhikam dṛṣṭvā kanyā iyam samupārjitam
abravīt tatra gāṅgeyam mantrimadhye dvijarṣabha
21. tataḥ dvijarṣabha iyam kanyā vaivāhikam samupārjitam
dṛṣṭvā tatra mantrimadhye gāṅgeyam abravīt
21. Then, O best among the twice-born (dvija), seeing that this maiden had been obtained for marriage, she (Amba) spoke to Gangeya (Bhishma) there amidst the ministers.
मया शाल्वपतिर्वीर मनसाभिवृतः पतिः ।
न मामर्हसि धर्मज्ञ परचित्तां प्रदापितुम् ॥२२॥
22. mayā śālvapatirvīra manasābhivṛtaḥ patiḥ ,
na māmarhasi dharmajña paracittāṁ pradāpitum.
22. mayā śālvapatiḥ vīra manasā abhivṛtaḥ patiḥ
na mām arhasi dharmajña paracittām pradāpitum
22. vīra mayā manasā śālvapatiḥ patiḥ abhivṛtaḥ
dharmajña paracittām mām pradāpitum na arhasi
22. O hero (vīra), I have mentally chosen the king of Salva as my husband. O knower of (natural) law (dharma), you should not give me, whose heart is fixed on another, away (to someone else).
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं भीष्मः संमन्त्र्य सह मन्त्रिभिः ।
निश्चित्य विससर्जेमां सत्यवत्या मते स्थितः ॥२३॥
23. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ bhīṣmaḥ saṁmantrya saha mantribhiḥ ,
niścitya visasarjemāṁ satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ.
23. tat śrutvā vacanam bhīṣmaḥ sammantrya saha mantribhiḥ
niścitya visasarja imām satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ
23. bhīṣmaḥ tat vacanam śrutvā mantribhiḥ saha sammantrya
niścitya satyavatyā mate sthitaḥ imām visasarja
23. Having heard that speech, Bhishma, after consulting with his ministers and making a decision, sent her away, abiding by Satyavati's wishes.
अनुज्ञाता तु भीष्मेण शाल्वं सौभपतिं ततः ।
कन्येयं मुदिता विप्र काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२४॥
24. anujñātā tu bhīṣmeṇa śālvaṁ saubhapatiṁ tataḥ ,
kanyeyaṁ muditā vipra kāle vacanamabravīt.
24. anujñātā tu bhīṣmeṇa śālvaṃ saubhapatiṃ tataḥ
kanyā iyam muditā vipra kāle vacanam abravīt
24. vipra tu bhīṣmeṇa anujñātā iyam kanyā muditā
tataḥ kāle śālvaṃ saubhapatiṃ vacanam abravīt
24. But, O brahmin (vipra), this joyful maiden, having been permitted by Bhishma, then spoke these words to Salva, the lord of Saubha, at the opportune moment.
विसर्जितास्मि भीष्मेण धर्मं मां प्रतिपादय ।
मनसाभिवृतः पूर्वं मया त्वं पार्थिवर्षभ ॥२५॥
25. visarjitāsmi bhīṣmeṇa dharmaṁ māṁ pratipādaya ,
manasābhivṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ mayā tvaṁ pārthivarṣabha.
25. visarjita asmi bhīṣmeṇa dharmaṃ mām pratipāday
manasā abhivṛtaḥ pūrvam mayā tvam pārthivarṣabha
25. pārthivarṣabha! asmi bhīṣmeṇa visarjita.
mām dharmaṃ pratipāday.
pūrvam manasā mayā tvam abhivṛtaḥ
25. I have been sent away by Bhishma; now, O best of kings (pārthivarṣabha), uphold what is right (dharma) for me. You were previously chosen by my heart.
प्रत्याचख्यौ च शाल्वोऽपि चारित्रस्याभिशङ्कितः ।
सेयं तपोवनं प्राप्ता तापस्येऽभिरता भृशम् ॥२६॥
26. pratyācakhyau ca śālvo'pi cāritrasyābhiśaṅkitaḥ ,
seyaṁ tapovanaṁ prāptā tāpasye'bhiratā bhṛśam.
26. pratyācakhyau ca śālvaḥ api cāritrasya abhiśaṅkitaḥ
sā iyam tapovanam prāptā tāpasyai abhiratā bhṛśam
26. śālvaḥ ca api cāritrasya abhiśaṅkitaḥ pratyācakhyau.
sā iyam tapovanam prāptā bhṛśam tāpasyai abhiratā
26. But Salva also rejected her, being suspicious of her character. And so, she, having reached a penance grove (tapovana), became intensely devoted to asceticism (tāpasya).
मया च प्रत्यभिज्ञाता वंशस्य परिकीर्तनात् ।
अस्य दुःखस्य चोत्पत्तिं भीष्ममेवेह मन्यते ॥२७॥
27. mayā ca pratyabhijñātā vaṁśasya parikīrtanāt ,
asya duḥkhasya cotpattiṁ bhīṣmameveha manyate.
27. mayā ca pratyabhijñātā vaṃśasya parikīrtanāt asya
duḥkhasya ca utpattim bhīṣmam eva iha manyate
27. vaṃśasya parikīrtanāt mayā ca pratyabhijñātā iha
asya duḥkhasya ca utpattim bhīṣmam eva manyate
27. And she was recognized by me through the narration of her lineage. Here, the origin of this suffering is attributed solely to Bhīṣma.
अम्बोवाच ।
भगवन्नेवमेवैतद्यथाह पृथिवीपतिः ।
शरीरकर्ता मातुर्मे सृञ्जयो होत्रवाहनः ॥२८॥
28. ambovāca ,
bhagavannevamevaitadyathāha pṛthivīpatiḥ ,
śarīrakartā māturme sṛñjayo hotravāhanaḥ.
28. ambā uvāca bhagavan evam eva etat yathā āha
pṛthivīpatiḥ śarīrakartā mātuḥ me sṛñjayaḥ hotravāhanaḥ
28. ambā uvāca bhagavan etat evam eva yathā pṛthivīpatiḥ
āha me mātuḥ śarīrakartā sṛñjayaḥ hotravāhanaḥ
28. Ambā said, 'O venerable one, this is indeed exactly as the lord of the earth has stated. Sṛñjaya Hotravāhana is the progenitor of my mother's body.'
न ह्युत्सहे स्वनगरं प्रतियातुं तपोधन ।
अवमानभयाच्चैव व्रीडया च महामुने ॥२९॥
29. na hyutsahe svanagaraṁ pratiyātuṁ tapodhana ,
avamānabhayāccaiva vrīḍayā ca mahāmune.
29. na hi utsahe sva-nagaram pratiyātum tapodhana
avamāna-bhayāt ca eva vrīḍayā ca mahāmune
29. tapodhana mahāmune na hi utsahe sva-nagaram
pratiyātum avamāna-bhayāt ca eva vrīḍayā ca
29. Indeed, O ascetic (tapas), O great sage, I am not able to return to my own city, both due to fear of disrespect and due to shame.
यत्तु मां भगवान्रामो वक्ष्यति द्विजसत्तम ।
तन्मे कार्यतमं कार्यमिति मे भगवन्मतिः ॥३०॥
30. yattu māṁ bhagavānrāmo vakṣyati dvijasattama ,
tanme kāryatamaṁ kāryamiti me bhagavanmatiḥ.
30. yat tu mām bhagavān rāmaḥ vakṣyati dvija-sattama
tat me kārya-tamam kāryam iti me bhagavat-matiḥ
30. dvija-sattama tu bhagavān rāmaḥ yat mām vakṣyati,
tat me kāryatamam kāryam iti me bhagavat-matiḥ
30. But, O best among the twice-born (dvija), whatever the venerable Rāma will tell me, that is my most important task — this is my revered opinion.
