Dhritarashtra said: "O Sañjaya, when my sons' constant hope for victory (jayāśā) was seen turning away in battle, what then did Duryodhana say? Or, O dear one, what did Karṇa do in battle after that?"
संजय उवाच ।

Sanjaya said: "Having seen Bhimasena blazing like fire in battle, Karṇa, having again mounted another chariot that was duly prepared, approached the Pāṇḍava, like an ocean agitated by the wind."

O lord of people, your sons, having seen Adhirathi's son (Karṇa) enraged, considered Bhīmasena as an oblation offered into the mouth of Yama.

Karna, having created a loud bowstring sound and a terrifying slap of his arm, advanced towards Bhimasena's chariot.

O King, O lord of the people, from that moment on, a great and extremely dreadful clash ensued once again between Karna (the son of the charioteer) and Bhima.

Indeed, those two mighty-armed warriors, enraged and seeking to kill one another, gazed at each other as if searing with their eyes.

The two great charioteers, those subduers of foes, enraged with eyes reddened by fury and breathing heavily, having met each other in battle, proceeded to batter one another.

Then Bhima, the suppressor of enemies, remembering the troubles received during the dice game, and also in the forest, and even in the city of Virata –

10.
(Bhima remembering) also the seizure of kingdoms rich in jewels by your sons, and the constant troubles created by you and your son –

11.
(Bhima remembering) and that you wished to burn Kunti with her sons, though she was innocent, and also the torment of Draupadi (kṛṣṇā) in the assembly by the wicked ones.

12.
Seek another husband; your husbands no longer exist. All the Pārthas have fallen into hell; they are all like impotent sesame seeds.

13.
O descendant of Kuru, your sons then declared in your presence that they wished to enjoy Draupadī (kṛṣṇā) as a slave-woman.

14.
And also, in your presence, Karṇa spoke harsh words in the assembly to them, who were departing dressed in black deer skins.

15.
And that your son, stable himself, roared with delight, having treated the Pāṇḍavas (pārthas) as insignificant as grass, while they were in a precarious situation and had lost their senses due to fury.

16.
From childhood onwards, Bhima (Vṛkodara), the slayer of foes and the righteous-souled (dharmātmā) one, pondering those many sufferings, became utterly disgusted with his own life.

17.
Then, the tiger among the Bharatas (Arjuna), having abandoned his self (ātman) [i.e., being reckless], twanged his very great, gold-backed, formidable bow and advanced towards Karna.

He, Bhima, with radiant, stone-polished networks of arrows directed towards Karna's chariot, completely obscured the sun's splendor.

Then, Karna (Adhirathi), having laughed, swiftly discharged sharp arrows and dispersed Bhimasena's networks of arrows with his own winged arrows.

The great charioteer (mahāratha), mighty-armed (mahābāhu), and mighty-strong (mahābala) Adhirathi (Karna), with great speed, pierced Bhima with nine sharp arrows.

21.
He (Bhima), undismayed, rushed towards the son of the charioteer (Karna), just like an elephant (mātaṅga) being restrained by arrows (which acted like goads).

Karna confronted him - the impetuous, swiftly advancing foremost of the Pandavas (Bhima) - to fight, just as a frenzied elephant meets another frenzied elephant.

Then, having loudly blown the conch shell (jalaja), which resounded with the noise of hundreds of drums, the army was agitated with joy, like a stirred-up ocean.

Having seen that agitated army, which was comprised of chariots, elephants, horses, and infantry, Bhima approached Karna and overwhelmed him with arrows.

But Karna, in the battle, while overwhelming the Pandava (Bhima) with arrows, mixed (Bhima's) antelope-colored horses with his own excellent, swan-colored horses.

Seeing (Bhima's) antelope-colored horses, swift as the wind, mixed with white (horses, referring to Karna's), your sons' army cried out in distress.

Upon seeing Karṇa and Vṛkodara, both enraged and with eyes red like copper due to anger, your great warriors (maharathas) became utterly terrified and trembled.

O best among the Bhāratas (bharataśreṣṭha), the battle (āyodhana) between those two became dreadful, resembling the terrifying realm of Yama (Yamarāṣṭra), and was as difficult to witness as the city of the king of ghosts.

The great warriors (maharathas), watching that extraordinary sight as if it were a public assembly, could not clearly discern victory for either side in their attempts to stop the other.

The rows of arrows released by those two, adorned with the feathers of kites and peacocks, shone forth like lines of excited cranes in the autumn sky.

Having seen Bhima, the subduer of enemies, intensely engaged with Karṇa (the son of Sūta), Krishna and Arjuna considered it an excessive burden for Bhima.
