ततो दुर्योधनो राजा द्रोणेनैवं प्रचोदितः ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नो युद्धायैव मनो दधे ॥१॥

tato duryodhano rājā droṇenaivaṁ pracoditaḥ ,
amarṣavaśamāpanno yuddhāyaiva mano dadhe.

1. Sañjaya said: Then King Duryodhana, thus urged by Droṇa, overcome by indignation, set his mind solely on battle.
अब्रवीच्च तदा कर्णं पुत्रो दुर्योधनस्तव ।
पश्य कृष्णसहायेन पाण्डवेन किरीटिना ।
आचार्यविहितं व्यूहं भिन्नं देवैः सुदुर्भिदम् ॥२॥
2. abravīcca tadā karṇaṁ putro duryodhanastava ,
paśya kṛṣṇasahāyena pāṇḍavena kirīṭinā ,
ācāryavihitaṁ vyūhaṁ bhinnaṁ devaiḥ sudurbhidam.
2. abravīt ca tadā karṇam putraḥ
duryodhanaḥ tava | paśya kṛṣṇasahāyena
pāṇḍavena kiriṭinā | ācāryavihitam
vyūham bhinnam devaiḥ sudurbhidam

2. And then your son Duryodhana spoke to Karṇa: "Behold! The battle formation (vyūha) devised by the teacher, which was extremely difficult for even the gods to penetrate, has been shattered by the Pāṇḍava, Arjuna (Kiriṭin), who has Kṛṣṇa as his ally."
तव व्यायच्छमानस्य द्रोणस्य च महात्मनः ।
मिषतां योधमुख्यानां सैन्धवो विनिपातितः ॥३॥
3. tava vyāyacchamānasya droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
miṣatāṁ yodhamukhyānāṁ saindhavo vinipātitaḥ.
3. tava vyāyacchamānasya droṇasya ca mahātmanaḥ |
miṣatām yodhamukhyānām saindhavaḥ vinipātitaḥ

3. Even while you and the great-souled Droṇa were striving, and as the foremost warriors (yodhamukhya) watched, the King of Sindh (Saindhava) was struck down.
पश्य राधेय राजानः पृथिव्यां प्रवरा युधि ।
पार्थेनैकेन निहताः सिंहेनेवेतरा मृगाः ॥४॥
4. paśya rādheya rājānaḥ pṛthivyāṁ pravarā yudhi ,
pārthenaikena nihatāḥ siṁhenevetarā mṛgāḥ.
4. paśya rādheya rājānaḥ pṛthivyām pravarāḥ yudhi |
pārthena ekena nihatāḥ siṃhena iva itarāḥ mṛgāḥ
4. rādheya paśya yudhi pṛthivyām प्रवराः राजानः
एकेन पार्थेन सिंहेन इव इतराः मृगाः निहताः
4. Behold, O son of Rādhā (Rādheya), how the foremost kings on earth were slain in battle by Arjuna (Pārtha) alone, just as other deer are killed by a lion.
मम व्यायच्छमानस्य समरे शत्रुसूदन ।
अल्पावशेषं सैन्यं मे कृतं शक्रात्मजेन ह ॥५॥
5. mama vyāyacchamānasya samare śatrusūdana ,
alpāvaśeṣaṁ sainyaṁ me kṛtaṁ śakrātmajena ha.
5. mama vyāyacchamānasya samare śatrusūdana
alpāvaśeṣam sainyam me kṛtam śakrātmajena ha
5. śatrusūdana mama samare vyāyacchamānasya me
sainyam śakrātmajena alpāvaśeṣam kṛtam ha
5. O destroyer of enemies, even as I struggled intensely in battle, my army was indeed reduced to a small remnant by the son of Indra (Arjuna).
कथं ह्यनिच्छमानस्य द्रोणस्य युधि फल्गुनः ।
भिन्द्यात्सुदुर्भिदं व्यूहं यतमानोऽपि संयुगे ॥६॥
6. kathaṁ hyanicchamānasya droṇasya yudhi phalgunaḥ ,
bhindyātsudurbhidaṁ vyūhaṁ yatamāno'pi saṁyuge.
6. katham hi anicchamanasya droṇasya yudhi phalgunaḥ
bhindyāt sudurbhidam vyūham yatamanah api saṃyuge
6. katham hi droṇasya anicchamanasya yudhi phalgunaḥ
sudurbhidam vyūham saṃyuge yatamanah api bhindyāt
6. How, indeed, could Arjuna break Droṇa's battle formation, which is exceedingly difficult to penetrate, even if he exerted himself in combat, if Droṇa himself was unwilling?
प्रियो हि फल्गुनो नित्यमाचार्यस्य महात्मनः ।
ततोऽस्य दत्तवान्द्वारं नयुद्धेनारिमर्दन ॥७॥
7. priyo hi phalguno nityamācāryasya mahātmanaḥ ,
tato'sya dattavāndvāraṁ nayuddhenārimardana.
7. priyaḥ hi phalgunaḥ nityam ācāryasya mahātmanaḥ
tataḥ asya dattavān dvāram na yuddhena arimardana
7. arimardana hi phalgunaḥ mahātmanaḥ ācāryasya nityam
priyaḥ tataḥ asya dvāram na yuddhena dattavān
7. For Arjuna was always dear to that great-souled teacher (ācārya). Therefore, O suppressor of enemies, he granted him an entrance, not through combat.
अभयं सैन्धवस्याजौ दत्त्वा द्रोणः परंतपः ।
प्रादात्किरीटिने द्वारं पश्य निर्गुणतां मम ॥८॥
8. abhayaṁ saindhavasyājau dattvā droṇaḥ paraṁtapaḥ ,
prādātkirīṭine dvāraṁ paśya nirguṇatāṁ mama.
8. abhayam saindhavasya ājau dattvā droṇaḥ paraṃtapaḥ
prādāt kirīṭine dvāram paśya nirguṇatām mama
8. paraṃtapaḥ droṇaḥ ājau saindhavasya abhayam dattvā
kirīṭine dvāram prādāt mama nirguṇatām paśya
8. O scorcher of enemies, after granting protection (abhaya) to the king of Sindhu (Jayadratha) in battle, Droṇa then provided an entrance to the crowned one (Arjuna). Behold my worthlessness (nirguṇatā)!
यद्यदास्यमनुज्ञां वै पूर्वमेव गृहान्प्रति ।
सिन्धुराजस्य समरे नाभविष्यज्जनक्षयः ॥९॥
9. yadyadāsyamanujñāṁ vai pūrvameva gṛhānprati ,
sindhurājasya samare nābhaviṣyajjanakṣayaḥ.
9. yat yat āsyam anujñām vai pūrvam eva gṛhān prati
sindhurājasya samare na abhaviṣyat janakṣayaḥ
9. vai pūrvam eva yat yat āsyam anujñām sindhurājasya gṛhān prati,
samare janakṣayaḥ na abhaviṣyat
9. If, indeed, any verbal permission for the king of Sindhu to return home had been granted beforehand, then there would have been no destruction of people (janakṣaya) in the battle.
जयद्रथो जीवितार्थी गच्छमानो गृहान्प्रति ।
मयानार्येण संरुद्धो द्रोणात्प्राप्याभयं रणे ॥१०॥
10. jayadratho jīvitārthī gacchamāno gṛhānprati ,
mayānāryeṇa saṁruddho droṇātprāpyābhayaṁ raṇe.
10. jayadrathaḥ jīvitārthī gacchamānaḥ gṛhān prati mayā
anāryeṇa saṃruddhaḥ droṇāt prāpya abhayam raṇe
10. jīvitārthī jayadrathaḥ raṇe droṇāt abhayam prāpya gṛhān prati gacchamānaḥ,
mayā anāryeṇa saṃruddhaḥ
10. Jayadratha, who desired to live and had obtained assurance of safety from Drona in the battle, was proceeding towards his home, but he was obstructed by me, the ignoble one.
अद्य मे भ्रातरः क्षीणाश्चित्रसेनादयो युधि ।
भीमसेनं समासाद्य पश्यतां नो दुरात्मनाम् ॥११॥
11. adya me bhrātaraḥ kṣīṇāścitrasenādayo yudhi ,
bhīmasenaṁ samāsādya paśyatāṁ no durātmanām.
11. adya me bhrātaraḥ kṣīṇāḥ citrasenādayaḥ yudhi
bhīmasenam samāsādya paśyatām naḥ durātmanām
11. adya me bhrātaraḥ citrasenādayaḥ yudhi bhīmasenam samāsādya kṣīṇāḥ,
naḥ durātmanām paśyatām
11. Today, my brothers, Citrasena and others, have been destroyed in battle, having encountered Bhimasena, while we, the wicked souls, looked on.
कर्ण उवाच ।
आचार्यं मा विगर्हस्व शक्त्या युध्यत्यसौ द्विजः ।
अजय्यान्पाण्डवान्मन्ये द्रोणेनास्त्रविदा मृधे ॥१२॥
12. karṇa uvāca ,
ācāryaṁ mā vigarhasva śaktyā yudhyatyasau dvijaḥ ,
ajayyānpāṇḍavānmanye droṇenāstravidā mṛdhe.
12. karṇa uvāca ācāryam mā vigarhasva śaktyā yudhyati asau
dvijaḥ ajayyān pāṇḍavān manye droṇena astravidā mṛdhe
12. karṇa uvāca: ācāryam mā vigarhasva.
asau dvijaḥ śaktyā yudhyati.
droṇena astravidā mṛdhe pāṇḍavān ajayyān manye.
12. Karna said: Do not criticize the preceptor! That Brahmin (dvija) fights with all his might. I consider the Pandavas to be unconquerable even by Drona, who is an expert in weapons, in battle.
तथा ह्येनमतिक्रम्य प्रविष्टः श्वेतवाहनः ।
दैवदृष्टोऽन्यथाभावो न मन्ये विद्यते क्वचित् ॥१३॥
13. tathā hyenamatikramya praviṣṭaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ ,
daivadṛṣṭo'nyathābhāvo na manye vidyate kvacit.
13. tathā hi enam atikramya praviṣṭaḥ śvetavāhanaḥ
daivadṛṣṭaḥ anyathābhāvaḥ na manye vidyate kvacit
13. hi tathā śvetavāhanaḥ enam atikramya praviṣṭaḥ
anyathābhāvaḥ daivadṛṣṭaḥ kvacit na vidyate iti manye
13. Indeed, Arjuna (śvetavāhana), having bypassed him, entered. I do not believe that such an alteration of circumstances, ordained by destiny (daiva), exists anywhere else.
ततो नो युध्यमानानां परं शक्त्या सुयोधन ।
सैन्धवो निहतो राजन्दैवमत्र परं स्मृतम् ॥१४॥
14. tato no yudhyamānānāṁ paraṁ śaktyā suyodhana ,
saindhavo nihato rājandaivamatra paraṁ smṛtam.
14. tataḥ naḥ yudhyamānānām param śaktyā suyodhana
saindhavaḥ nihataḥ rājan daivam atra param smṛtam
14. suyodhana rājan tataḥ naḥ śaktyā param yudhyamānānām
api saindhavaḥ nihataḥ [ataḥ] atra daivam param smṛtam
14. Therefore, O Suyodhana, for us who were fighting with utmost strength (śakti), Jayadratha (saindhava) was killed, O King. Here, destiny (daiva) is indeed considered supreme.
परं यत्नं कुर्वतां च त्वया सार्धं रणाजिरे ।
हत्वास्माकं पौरुषं हि दैवं पश्चात्करोति नः ।
सततं चेष्टमानानां निकृत्या विक्रमेण च ॥१५॥
15. paraṁ yatnaṁ kurvatāṁ ca tvayā sārdhaṁ raṇājire ,
hatvāsmākaṁ pauruṣaṁ hi daivaṁ paścātkaroti naḥ ,
satataṁ ceṣṭamānānāṁ nikṛtyā vikrameṇa ca.
15. param yatnam kurvatām ca tvayā sārdham
raṇājire hatvā asmākam pauruṣam
hi daivam paścāt karoti naḥ satatam
ceṣṭamānānām nikṛtyā vikrameṇa ca
15. hi raṇājire tvayā sārdham param yatnam
kurvatām ca nikṛtyā vikrameṇa ca
satatam ceṣṭamānānām asmākam pauruṣam
hatvā daivam naḥ paścāt karoti
15. Indeed, even for us who constantly strive with trickery and valor, exerting the utmost effort along with you on the battlefield, destiny (daiva) destroys our manliness and then places us in an inferior position.
दैवोपसृष्टः पुरुषो यत्कर्म कुरुते क्वचित् ।
कृतं कृतं स्म तत्तस्य दैवेन विनिहन्यते ॥१६॥
16. daivopasṛṣṭaḥ puruṣo yatkarma kurute kvacit ,
kṛtaṁ kṛtaṁ sma tattasya daivena vinihanyate.
16. daivopasṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaḥ yat karma kurute kvacit
kṛtam kṛtam sma tat tasya daivena vinihanyate
16. daivopasṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaḥ kvacit yat karma kurute,
tasya tat kṛtam kṛtam [karma] daivena eva vinihanyate sma
16. Whatever action (karma) a person (puruṣa), afflicted by destiny (daiva), performs anywhere, each and every deed of his that is done is destroyed by destiny (daiva).
यत्कर्तव्यं मनुष्येण व्यवसायवता सता ।
तत्कार्यमविशङ्केन सिद्धिर्दैवे प्रतिष्ठिता ॥१७॥
17. yatkartavyaṁ manuṣyeṇa vyavasāyavatā satā ,
tatkāryamaviśaṅkena siddhirdaive pratiṣṭhitā.
17. yat kartavyam manuṣyeṇa vyavasāyavatā satā tat
kāryam aviśaṅkena siddhiḥ daīve pratiṣṭhitā
17. vyavasāyavatā satā manuṣyeṇa yat kartavyam tat
aviśaṅkena kāryam siddhiḥ daīve pratiṣṭhitā
17. A resolute and virtuous person should perform their duty without hesitation. Success, however, rests upon destiny.
निकृत्या निकृताः पार्था विषयोगैश्च भारत ।
दग्धा जतुगृहे चापि द्यूतेन च पराजिताः ॥१८॥
18. nikṛtyā nikṛtāḥ pārthā viṣayogaiśca bhārata ,
dagdhā jatugṛhe cāpi dyūtena ca parājitāḥ.
18. nikṛtyā nikṛtāḥ pārthāḥ viṣayogaiḥ ca bhārata
dagdhāḥ jatugṛhe ca api dyūtena ca parājitāḥ
18. bhārata pārthāḥ nikṛtyā ca viṣayogaiḥ nikṛtāḥ
jatugṛhe ca api dagdhāḥ ca dyūtena पराजिताः
18. O Pārthas, you were wronged by deceit, and by the use of poison, O descendant of Bharata. You were even burned in the lac-house, and defeated by gambling.
राजनीतिं व्यपाश्रित्य प्रहिताश्चैव काननम् ।
यत्नेन च कृतं यत्ते दैवेन विनिपातितम् ॥१९॥
19. rājanītiṁ vyapāśritya prahitāścaiva kānanam ,
yatnena ca kṛtaṁ yatte daivena vinipātitam.
19. rājaneetim vyapāśritya prahitāḥ ca eva kānanam
yatnena ca kṛtam yat te daīvena vinipātitam
19. rājaneetim vyapāśritya ca eva kānanam prahitāḥ
ca yat te yatnena kṛtam tat daīvena vinipātitam
19. Having resorted to political strategies (rājaneeti), you were indeed sent to the forest. And whatever was accomplished by your effort was then thwarted by destiny.
युध्यस्व यत्नमास्थाय मृत्युं कृत्वा निवर्तनम् ।
यततस्तव तेषां च दैवं मार्गेण यास्यति ॥२०॥
20. yudhyasva yatnamāsthāya mṛtyuṁ kṛtvā nivartanam ,
yatatastava teṣāṁ ca daivaṁ mārgeṇa yāsyati.
20. yudhyasva yatnam āsthāya mṛtyum kṛtvā nivartanam
yatataḥ tava teṣām ca daīvam mārgeṇa yāsyati
20. yatnam āsthāya mṛtyum nivartanam kṛtvā yudhyasva
yatataḥ tava ca teṣām daīvam mārgeṇa yāsyati
20. Fight, putting forth effort and accepting death as the only retreat. As you strive, your destiny and theirs will unfold in their respective paths.
न तेषां मतिपूर्वं हि सुकृतं दृश्यते क्वचित् ।
दुष्कृतं तव वा वीर बुद्ध्या हीनं कुरूद्वह ॥२१॥
21. na teṣāṁ matipūrvaṁ hi sukṛtaṁ dṛśyate kvacit ,
duṣkṛtaṁ tava vā vīra buddhyā hīnaṁ kurūdvaha.
21. na teṣām matipūrvam hi sukṛtam dṛśyate kvacit
duṣkṛtam tava vā vīra buddhyā hīnam kurūdvaha
21. hi teṣām matipūrvam sukṛtam kvacit na dṛśyate
vā tava vīra kurūdvaha buddhyā hīnam duṣkṛtam
21. Indeed, neither are their intentional good deeds ever seen, nor are your bad deeds, O hero (vīra), O descendent of Kuru (Kurūdvaha), which were devoid of understanding.
दैवं प्रमाणं सर्वस्य सुकृतस्येतरस्य वा ।
अनन्यकर्म दैवं हि जागर्ति स्वपतामपि ॥२२॥
22. daivaṁ pramāṇaṁ sarvasya sukṛtasyetarasya vā ,
ananyakarma daivaṁ hi jāgarti svapatāmapi.
22. daivam pramāṇam sarvasya sukṛtasya itarasya
vā ananyakarma daivam hi jāgarti svapatām api
22. daivam sarvasya sukṛtasya vā itarasya pramāṇam
hi ananyakarma daivam svapatām api jāgarti
22. Destiny (daiva) is the ultimate authority for all actions, whether good or bad. Indeed, destiny (daiva), whose operation is independent of others, remains vigilant even while people sleep.
बहूनि तव सैन्यानि योधाश्च बहवस्तथा ।
न तथा पाण्डुपुत्राणामेवं युद्धमवर्तत ॥२३॥
23. bahūni tava sainyāni yodhāśca bahavastathā ,
na tathā pāṇḍuputrāṇāmevaṁ yuddhamavartata.
23. bahūni tava sainyāni yodhāḥ ca bahavaḥ tathā
na tathā pāṇḍuputrāṇām evam yuddham avartata
23. tava bahūni sainyāni ca bahavaḥ yodhāḥ tathā
pāṇḍuputrāṇām yuddham evam tathā na avartata
23. You had many armies and similarly many warriors, but the war for the sons of Pāṇḍu did not proceed in that manner.
तैरल्पैर्बहवो यूयं क्षयं नीताः प्रहारिणः ।
शङ्के दैवस्य तत्कर्म पौरुषं येन नाशितम् ॥२४॥
24. tairalpairbahavo yūyaṁ kṣayaṁ nītāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
śaṅke daivasya tatkarma pauruṣaṁ yena nāśitam.
24. taiḥ alpaiḥ bahavaḥ yūyam kṣayam nītāḥ prahāriṇaḥ
śaṅke daivasya tat karma pauruṣam yena nāśitam
24. alpaiḥ taiḥ yūyam bahavaḥ prahāriṇaḥ kṣayam nītāḥ
śaṅke tat daivasya karma yena pauruṣam nāśitam
24. You, though many powerful warriors, were brought to destruction by those few. I suspect that this was the action of destiny (daiva), by which human effort (pauruṣa) was annihilated.
संजय उवाच ।
एवं संभाषमाणानां बहु तत्तज्जनाधिप ।
पाण्डवानामनीकानि समदृश्यन्त संयुगे ॥२५॥
25. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ saṁbhāṣamāṇānāṁ bahu tattajjanādhipa ,
pāṇḍavānāmanīkāni samadṛśyanta saṁyuge.
25. saṃjaya uvāca evam saṃbhāṣamāṇānām bahu tattat
janādhipa pāṇḍavānām anīkāni samadṛśyanta saṃyuge
25. saṃjaya uvāca janādhipa evam bahu tattat
saṃbhāṣamāṇānām saṃyuge pāṇḍavānām anīkāni samadṛśyanta
25. Saṃjaya said: O ruler of men (janādhipa), while they were speaking much about various matters, the armies of the Pāṇḍavas became visible on the battlefield.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं व्यतिषक्तरथद्विपम् ।
तावकानां परैः सार्धं राजन्दुर्मन्त्रिते तव ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ vyatiṣaktarathadvipam ,
tāvakānāṁ paraiḥ sārdhaṁ rājandurmantrite tava.
26. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham vyatiṣakta-ratha-dvipam
tāvakānām paraiḥ sārdham rājan durmantrite tava
26. rājan tataḥ tava durmantrite vyatiṣakta-ratha-dvipam
yuddham tāvakānām sārdham paraiḥ pravavṛte
26. Saṃjaya said: Then, O King (rājan), the battle began between your forces and the enemies, a battle in which chariots and elephants were intermingled, all due to your misguided counsel.
