वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स तं दृष्ट्वा तथाभूतं राजानं घोरदर्शनम् ।
दीर्घश्मश्रुधरं नॄणां शोणितेन समुक्षितम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa taṁ dṛṣṭvā tathābhūtaṁ rājānaṁ ghoradarśanam ,
dīrghaśmaśrudharaṁ nṝṇāṁ śoṇitena samukṣitam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having seen that king - who was in such a state, of terrible appearance, wearing long beards, and smeared with the blood of men - (Uttanka...).
चकार न व्यथां विप्रो राजा त्वेनमथाब्रवीत् ।
प्रत्युत्थाय महातेजा भयकर्ता यमोपमः ॥२॥
2. cakāra na vyathāṁ vipro rājā tvenamathābravīt ,
pratyutthāya mahātejā bhayakartā yamopamaḥ.
2. cakāra na vyathām vipraḥ rājā tu enam atha
abravīt pratyutthāya mahātejā bhayakartā yamopamaḥ

2. ...the brahmin (Uttanka) did not feel any distress. But the king, who was exceedingly powerful, fear-inducing, and like Yama, rose up and then spoke to him.
दिष्ट्या त्वमसि कल्याण षष्ठे काले ममान्तिकम् ।
भक्षं मृगयमाणस्य संप्राप्तो द्विजसत्तम ॥३॥
3. diṣṭyā tvamasi kalyāṇa ṣaṣṭhe kāle mamāntikam ,
bhakṣaṁ mṛgayamāṇasya saṁprāpto dvijasattama.
3. diṣṭyā tvam asi kalyāṇa ṣaṣṭhe kāle mama antikam
bhakṣam mṛgayamāṇasya samprāptaḥ dvijasattama
3. Fortunately, O blessed one, you have arrived before me at my sixth mealtime, as I was searching for food, O best among the twice-born.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
राजन्गुर्वर्थिनं विद्धि चरन्तं मामिहागतम् ।
न च गुर्वर्थमुद्युक्तं हिंस्यमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥४॥
4. uttaṅka uvāca ,
rājangurvarthinaṁ viddhi carantaṁ māmihāgatam ,
na ca gurvarthamudyuktaṁ hiṁsyamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ.
4. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca rājan gurvarthinam viddhi carantam mām iha
āgatam na ca gurvartham udyuktam hiṃsyam āhuḥ manīṣiṇaḥ
4. Uttaṅka said: 'O King, know that I have arrived here, having wandered for my guru's (guru) purpose. Furthermore, the wise declare that one engaged in the guru's (guru) mission should not be harmed.'
राजोवाच ।
षष्ठे काले ममाहारो विहितो द्विजसत्तम ।
न च शक्यः समुत्स्रष्टुं क्षुधितेन मयाद्य वै ॥५॥
5. rājovāca ,
ṣaṣṭhe kāle mamāhāro vihito dvijasattama ,
na ca śakyaḥ samutsraṣṭuṁ kṣudhitena mayādya vai.
5. rājā uvāca ṣaṣṭhe kāle mama āhāraḥ vihitaḥ dvijasattama
na ca śakyaḥ samutsraṣṭum kṣuditena mayā adya vai
5. The King said: 'O best among the twice-born, my meal is prescribed for the sixth hour. It is indeed impossible for me, being hungry, to give it up today.'
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
एवमस्तु महाराज समयः क्रियतां तु मे ।
गुर्वर्थमभिनिर्वर्त्य पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम् ॥६॥
6. uttaṅka uvāca ,
evamastu mahārāja samayaḥ kriyatāṁ tu me ,
gurvarthamabhinirvartya punareṣyāmi te vaśam.
6. uttaṅkaḥ uvāca evam astu mahārāja samayaḥ kriyatām
tu me gurvartham abhinirvartya punaḥ eṣyāmi te vaśam
6. Uttaṅka said: 'So be it, O great King. But let an agreement be made for me: having accomplished my guru's (guru) purpose, I will return under your authority.'
संश्रुतश्च मया योऽर्थो गुरवे राजसत्तम ।
त्वदधीनः स राजेन्द्र तं त्वा भिक्षे नरेश्वर ॥७॥
7. saṁśrutaśca mayā yo'rtho gurave rājasattama ,
tvadadhīnaḥ sa rājendra taṁ tvā bhikṣe nareśvara.
7. saṃśrutaḥ ca mayā yaḥ arthaḥ gurave rājasattama
tvadadhīnaḥ saḥ rājendra tam tvā bhikṣe nareśvara
7. rājasattama rājendra nareśvara mayā gurave yaḥ
arthaḥ ca saṃśrutaḥ saḥ tvadadhīnaḥ tam tvā bhikṣe
7. O best of kings, the task that I promised to my teacher, that very task, O king of kings, is dependent on you. O lord of men, I beg you for that.
ददासि विप्रमुख्येभ्यस्त्वं हि रत्नानि सर्वशः ।
दाता त्वं च नरव्याघ्र पात्रभूतः क्षिताविह ।
पात्रं प्रतिग्रहे चापि विद्धि मां नृपसत्तम ॥८॥
8. dadāsi vipramukhyebhyastvaṁ hi ratnāni sarvaśaḥ ,
dātā tvaṁ ca naravyāghra pātrabhūtaḥ kṣitāviha ,
pātraṁ pratigrahe cāpi viddhi māṁ nṛpasattama.
8. dadāsi vipramukhyebhyaḥ tvam hi ratnāni
sarvaśaḥ dātā tvam ca naravyāghra
pātrabhūtaḥ kṣitau iha pātram
pratigrahe ca api viddhi mām nṛpasattama
8. nṛpasattama naravyāghra tvam hi
vipramukhyebhyaḥ sarvaśaḥ ratnāni dadāsi
tvam ca dātā iha kṣitau pātrabhūtaḥ
pratigrahe ca api mām pātram viddhi
8. Indeed, you always bestow jewels upon leading Brahmins. You, O tiger among men, are a great giver, and here on earth, you yourself are worthy of receiving. Know me too, O best of kings, as a fitting recipient for this acceptance.
उपाकृत्य गुरोरर्थं त्वदायत्तमरिंदम ।
समयेनेह राजेन्द्र पुनरेष्यामि ते वशम् ॥९॥
9. upākṛtya gurorarthaṁ tvadāyattamariṁdama ,
samayeneha rājendra punareṣyāmi te vaśam.
9. upākṛtya guroḥ artham tvadāyattam ariṃdama
samayena iha rājendra punaḥ eṣyāmi te vaśam
9. ariṃdama rājendra guroḥ artham tvadāyattam
upākṛtya samayena iha punaḥ te vaśam eṣyāmi
9. O subduer of enemies, having fulfilled the teacher's task - which is dependent on you - I will return here, O king of kings, again to your authority at the proper time.
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि नात्र मिथ्यास्ति किंचन ।
अनृतं नोक्तपूर्वं मे स्वैरेष्वपि कुतोऽन्यथा ॥१०॥
10. satyaṁ te pratijānāmi nātra mithyāsti kiṁcana ,
anṛtaṁ noktapūrvaṁ me svaireṣvapi kuto'nyathā.
10. satyam te pratijānāmi na atra mithyā asti kiñcana
anṛtam na uktapūrvaṃ me svaireshu api kutaḥ anyathā
10. te satyam pratijānāmi atra kiñcana mithyā na asti
me anṛtam svaireshu api na uktapūrvaṃ kutaḥ anyathā
10. I truly promise this to you; there is absolutely no falsehood here. No untruth has ever been spoken by me, not even in jest; how then could it be otherwise (in a serious matter)?
सौदास उवाच ।
यदि मत्तस्त्वदायत्तो गुर्वर्थः कृत एव सः ।
यदि चास्मि प्रतिग्राह्यः सांप्रतं तद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥११॥
11. saudāsa uvāca ,
yadi mattastvadāyatto gurvarthaḥ kṛta eva saḥ ,
yadi cāsmi pratigrāhyaḥ sāṁprataṁ tadbravīhi me.
11. Saudāsaḥ uvāca yadi mattaḥ tvat-āyattaḥ guru-arthaḥ kṛtaḥ
eva saḥ yadi ca asmi pratigrāhyaḥ sāmpratam tat bravīhi me
11. Saudāsaḥ uvāca yadi mattaḥ guru-arthaḥ tvat-āyattaḥ kṛtaḥ
saḥ eva yadi ca sāmpratam pratigrāhyaḥ asmi tat me bravīhi
11. Saudāsa said: "If the guru's (guru) purpose, which depends on you, has indeed been accomplished by me, and if I am now deemed worthy of your acceptance, then tell me that."
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
प्रतिग्राह्यो मतो मे त्वं सदैव पुरुषर्षभ ।
सोऽहं त्वामनुसंप्राप्तो भिक्षितुं मणिकुण्डले ॥१२॥
12. uttaṅka uvāca ,
pratigrāhyo mato me tvaṁ sadaiva puruṣarṣabha ,
so'haṁ tvāmanusaṁprāpto bhikṣituṁ maṇikuṇḍale.
12. Uttan˙kaḥ uvāca pratigrāhyaḥ mataḥ me tvam sadā eva
puruṣa-ṛṣabha saḥ aham tvām anusampraptaḥ bhikṣitum maṇi-kuṇḍale
12. Uttan˙kaḥ uvāca puruṣa-ṛṣabha me tvam sadā eva pratigrāhyaḥ
mataḥ saḥ aham maṇi-kuṇḍale bhikṣitum tvām anusampraptaḥ
12. Uttanka said: "O best among men, you are always considered worthy of my acceptance. Therefore, I have approached you to beg for the jeweled earrings."
सौदास उवाच ।
पत्न्यास्ते मम विप्रर्षे रुचिरे मणिकुण्डले ।
वरयार्थं त्वमन्यं वै तं ते दास्यामि सुव्रत ॥१३॥
13. saudāsa uvāca ,
patnyāste mama viprarṣe rucire maṇikuṇḍale ,
varayārthaṁ tvamanyaṁ vai taṁ te dāsyāmi suvrata.
13. Saudāsaḥ uvāca patnyāḥ te mama vipra-ṛṣe rucire maṇi-kuṇḍale
varaya artham tvam anyam vai tam te dāsyāmi suvrata
13. Saudāsaḥ uvāca vipra-ṛṣe suvrata
mama patnyāḥ te rucire
maṇi-kuṇḍale (santīti) tvam anyam
artham varaya vai te tam dāsyāmi
13. Saudāsa said: "O sage (viprarṣi), those beautiful jeweled earrings belong to my wife. Ask for something else, O man of excellent vows (suvrata); I will certainly give that to you."
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
अलं ते व्यपदेशेन प्रमाणं यदि ते वयम् ।
प्रयच्छ कुण्डले मे त्वं सत्यवाग्भव पार्थिव ॥१४॥
14. uttaṅka uvāca ,
alaṁ te vyapadeśena pramāṇaṁ yadi te vayam ,
prayaccha kuṇḍale me tvaṁ satyavāgbhava pārthiva.
14. Uttan˙kaḥ uvāca alam te vyapadeśena pramāṇam yadi te
vayam prayaccha kuṇḍale me tvam satya-vāk bhava pārthiva
14. Uttan˙kaḥ uvāca te vyapadeśena alam yadi vayam te pramāṇam
tvam me kuṇḍale prayaccha pārthiva satya-vāk bhava
14. Uttanka said: "Enough with your excuses! If we (my guru's authority via me) are a recognized authority to you, then give me the earrings. Be truthful, O king (pārthiva)."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तस्त्वब्रवीद्राजा तमुत्तङ्कं पुनर्वचः ।
गच्छ मद्वचनाद्देवीं ब्रूहि देहीति सत्तम ॥१५॥
15. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktastvabravīdrājā tamuttaṅkaṁ punarvacaḥ ,
gaccha madvacanāddevīṁ brūhi dehīti sattama.
15. vaiśampāyana uvāca iti uktaḥ tu abravīt rājā tam uttaṅkam
punaḥ vacaḥ gaccha mat-vacanāt devīm brūhi dehi iti sattama
15. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed, the king then spoke again to Uttanka, saying, "Go, at my word, and tell the goddess, 'Give them (the earrings)!' O best among men!"
सैवमुक्ता त्वया नूनं मद्वाक्येन शुचिस्मिता ।
प्रदास्यति द्विजश्रेष्ठ कुण्डले ते न संशयः ॥१६॥
16. saivamuktā tvayā nūnaṁ madvākyena śucismitā ,
pradāsyati dvijaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale te na saṁśayaḥ.
16. sā evam uktā tvayā nūnam mat-vākyena śucismitā
pradāsyati dvijaśreṣṭha kuṇḍale te na saṃśayaḥ
16. When she is thus addressed by you, by my word, that pure-smiling one will certainly give you the two earrings, O best among the twice-born (dvija)! There is no doubt about it.
उत्तङ्क उवाच ।
क्व पत्नी भवतः शक्या मया द्रष्टुं नरेश्वर ।
स्वयं वापि भवान्पत्नीं किमर्थं नोपसर्पति ॥१७॥
17. uttaṅka uvāca ,
kva patnī bhavataḥ śakyā mayā draṣṭuṁ nareśvara ,
svayaṁ vāpi bhavānpatnīṁ kimarthaṁ nopasarpati.
17. uttaṅka uvāca kva patnī bhavataḥ śakyā mayā draṣṭum nara-īśvara
svayam vā api bhavān patnīm kim-artham na upasarpati
17. Uttanka said: "O lord of men (nareśvara), where can your wife be seen by me? Or why do you yourself not approach your wife?"
सौदास उवाच ।
द्रक्ष्यते तां भवानद्य कस्मिंश्चिद्वननिर्झरे ।
षष्ठे काले न हि मया सा शक्या द्रष्टुमद्य वै ॥१८॥
18. saudāsa uvāca ,
drakṣyate tāṁ bhavānadya kasmiṁścidvananirjhare ,
ṣaṣṭhe kāle na hi mayā sā śakyā draṣṭumadya vai.
18. saudāsa uvāca drakṣyate tām bhavān adya kasmin-cit
vana-nirjhare ṣaṣṭhe kāle na hi mayā sā śakyā draṣṭum adya vai
18. Saudāsa said: "You will see her today in some forest waterfall. Indeed, she cannot be seen by me now during the sixth period (of the day/night)."
उत्तङ्कस्तु तथोक्तः स जगाम भरतर्षभ ।
मदयन्तीं च दृष्ट्वा सोऽज्ञापयत्स्वं प्रयोजनम् ॥१९॥
19. uttaṅkastu tathoktaḥ sa jagāma bharatarṣabha ,
madayantīṁ ca dṛṣṭvā so'jñāpayatsvaṁ prayojanam.
19. uttankaḥ tu tathā uktaḥ saḥ jagāma bharatarṣabha
madayantīm ca dṛṣṭvā saḥ ajñāpayat svam prayojanam
19. bharatarṣabha tathā uktaḥ saḥ uttaṅkaḥ jagāma ca
madayantīm dṛṣṭvā saḥ svam prayojanam ajñāpayat
19. O best among the Bharatas, Uttanka, thus spoken to, went and, having seen Madayanti, conveyed his purpose to her.
सौदासवचनं श्रुत्वा ततः सा पृथुलोचना ।
प्रत्युवाच महाबुद्धिमुत्तङ्कं जनमेजय ॥२०॥
20. saudāsavacanaṁ śrutvā tataḥ sā pṛthulocanā ,
pratyuvāca mahābuddhimuttaṅkaṁ janamejaya.
20. saudāsavacanam śrutvā tataḥ sā pṛthulocanā
prati uvāca mahābuddhim uttaṅkam janamejaya
20. janamejaya saudāsavacanam śrutvā tataḥ sā
pṛthulocanā mahābuddhim uttaṅkam prati uvāca
20. O Janamejaya, having heard Saudasa's words, that wide-eyed lady then replied to the highly intelligent Uttanka.
एवमेतन्महाब्रह्मन्नानृतं वदसेऽनघ ।
अभिज्ञानं तु किंचित्त्वं समानेतुमिहार्हसि ॥२१॥
21. evametanmahābrahmannānṛtaṁ vadase'nagha ,
abhijñānaṁ tu kiṁcittvaṁ samānetumihārhasi.
21. evam etat mahābrahman na anṛtam vadase anagha
abhijñānam tu kiṃcit tvam samānetum iha arhasi
21. mahābrahman anagha evam etat anṛtam na vadase
tu tvam kiṃcit abhijñānam iha samānetum arhasi
21. O great brahmin (brahman), O sinless one, what you say is not untrue. However, you should bring some token of recognition here.
इमे हि दिव्ये मणिकुण्डले मे देवाश्च यक्षाश्च महोरगाश्च ।
तैस्तैरुपायैः परिहर्तुकामाश्छिद्रेषु नित्यं परितर्कयन्ति ॥२२॥
22. ime hi divye maṇikuṇḍale me; devāśca yakṣāśca mahoragāśca ,
taistairupāyaiḥ parihartukāmā;śchidreṣu nityaṁ paritarkayanti.
22. ime hi divye maṇikuṇḍale me
devāḥ ca yakṣāḥ ca mahoragāḥ ca
taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ parihartukāmāḥ
chidreṣu nityam paritarkayanti
22. hi ime me divye maṇikuṇḍale ca
devāḥ ca yakṣāḥ ca mahoragāḥ
taiḥ taiḥ upāyaiḥ parihartukāmāḥ
nityam chidreṣu paritarkayanti
22. Indeed, these divine jeweled earrings belong to me, and gods, Yakshas, and great serpents, desiring to carry them away by various means, are constantly watching for vulnerabilities.
निक्षिप्तमेतद्भुवि पन्नगास्तु रत्नं समासाद्य परामृषेयुः ।
यक्षास्तथोच्छिष्टधृतं सुराश्च निद्रावशं त्वा परिधर्षयेयुः ॥२३॥
23. nikṣiptametadbhuvi pannagāstu; ratnaṁ samāsādya parāmṛṣeyuḥ ,
yakṣāstathocchiṣṭadhṛtaṁ surāśca; nidrāvaśaṁ tvā paridharṣayeyuḥ.
23. nikṣiptam etat bhuvi pannagāḥ tu
ratnam samāsādya parāmṛṣeyuḥ
yakṣāḥ tathā ucchiṣṭadhṛtam surāḥ
ca nidrāvaśam tvā paridharṣayeyuḥ
23. If this were cast upon the earth, snakes would surely seize the jewel and claim it. Similarly, Yakṣas and gods, deeming it as a mere remnant, would harass you if you were overcome by sleep.
छिद्रेष्वेतेषु हि सदा ह्यधृष्येषु द्विजर्षभ ।
देवराक्षसनागानामप्रमत्तेन धार्यते ॥२४॥
24. chidreṣveteṣu hi sadā hyadhṛṣyeṣu dvijarṣabha ,
devarākṣasanāgānāmapramattena dhāryate.
24. chidreṣu eteṣu hi sadā hi adhṛṣyeṣu dvijarṣabha
devarākṣasanāgānām apramattena dhāryate
24. O best among the twice-born (dvija)! In these hidden and always unassailable places, it must be vigilantly guarded against gods, Rākṣasas, and Nāgas.
स्यन्देते हि दिवा रुक्मं रात्रौ च द्विजसत्तम ।
नक्तं नक्षत्रताराणां प्रभामाक्षिप्य वर्तते ॥२५॥
25. syandete hi divā rukmaṁ rātrau ca dvijasattama ,
naktaṁ nakṣatratārāṇāṁ prabhāmākṣipya vartate.
25. syandete hi divā rukmam rātrau ca dvijasattama
naktam nakṣatratārāṇām prabhām ākṣipya vartate
25. Indeed, O best among the twice-born (dvija)! The luster flows forth both by day and by night. At night, it shines, eclipsing the radiance of the constellations and stars.
एते ह्यामुच्य भगवन्क्षुत्पिपासाभयं कुतः ।
विषाग्निश्वापदेभ्यश्च भयं जातु न विद्यते ॥२६॥
26. ete hyāmucya bhagavankṣutpipāsābhayaṁ kutaḥ ,
viṣāgniśvāpadebhyaśca bhayaṁ jātu na vidyate.
26. ete hi āmucya bhagavan kṣutpipāsābhayam kutaḥ
viṣāgniśvāpadebhyaḥ ca bhayam jātu na vidyate
26. O venerable one! Having worn these, from where could there be fear of hunger and thirst? And from poison, fire, and wild animals, fear never arises.
ह्रस्वेन चैते आमुक्ते भवतो ह्रस्वके तदा ।
अनुरूपेण चामुक्ते तत्प्रमाणे हि जायतः ॥२७॥
27. hrasvena caite āmukte bhavato hrasvake tadā ,
anurūpeṇa cāmukte tatpramāṇe hi jāyataḥ.
27. hrasvena ca ete āmukte bhavataḥ hrasvake tadā
| anurūpeṇa ca āmukte tatpramāṇe hi jāyataḥ
27. ca ete hrasvena āmukte tadā hrasvake bhavataḥ
ca anurūpeṇa āmukte hi tatpramāṇe jāyataḥ
27. And these (earrings), when worn by a short person, become short then. And when worn by a person of suitable stature, they indeed become of that original size.
एवंविधे ममैते वै कुण्डले परमार्चिते ।
त्रिषु लोकेषु विख्याते तदभिज्ञानमानय ॥२८॥
28. evaṁvidhe mamaite vai kuṇḍale paramārcite ,
triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāte tadabhijñānamānaya.
28. evaṃvidhe mama ete vai kuṇḍale paramārcite
| triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāte tat abhijñānam ānaya
28. evaṃvidhe mama ete vai paramārcite kuṇḍale
triṣu lokeṣu vikhyāte tat abhijñānam ānaya
28. Such are these two highly adorned earrings of mine, indeed, renowned in the three worlds. Bring me that token of recognition (abhijñāna).
