अधिष्ठितः पदा मूर्ध्नि भग्नसक्थो महीं गतः ।
शौटीरमानी पुत्रो मे कान्यभाषत संजय ॥१॥

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'Saṃjaya, to whom did my arrogant son, whose head had been trampled by a foot and whose thighs were broken, fallen to the ground, speak?'
अत्यर्थं कोपनो राजा जातवैरश्च पाण्डुषु ।
व्यसनं परमं प्राप्तः किमाह परमाहवे ॥२॥
2. atyarthaṁ kopano rājā jātavairaśca pāṇḍuṣu ,
vyasanaṁ paramaṁ prāptaḥ kimāha paramāhave.

2. What did the king, who was exceedingly wrathful and held deep animosity towards the Pāṇḍavas, and who had suffered the ultimate calamity, say during the great war?
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि यथावृत्तं नराधिप ।
राज्ञा यदुक्तं भग्नेन तस्मिन्व्यसन आगते ॥३॥
3. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājanpravakṣyāmi yathāvṛttaṁ narādhipa ,
rājñā yaduktaṁ bhagnena tasminvyasana āgate.
3. saṃjayaḥ uvāca śṛṇu rājan pravakṣyāmi yathāvṛttaṃ
narādhipa rājñā yat uktaṃ bhagnena tasmin vyasane āgate
3. saṃjayaḥ uvāca rājan,
narādhipa,
śṛṇu! tasmin vyasane āgate,
bhagnena rājñā yat uktaṃ,
[tat] yathāvṛttaṃ pravakṣyāmi.
3. Saṃjaya said: 'O King, O Lord of Men, listen! I will recount exactly what was said by the defeated king when that great calamity had occurred.'
भग्नसक्थो नृपो राजन्पांसुना सोऽवगुण्ठितः ।
यमयन्मूर्धजांस्तत्र वीक्ष्य चैव दिशो दश ॥४॥
4. bhagnasaktho nṛpo rājanpāṁsunā so'vaguṇṭhitaḥ ,
yamayanmūrdhajāṁstatra vīkṣya caiva diśo daśa.
4. bhagnasakthaḥ nṛpaḥ rājan pāṃsunā saḥ avaguṇṭhitaḥ
yamayan mūrdhajān tatra vīkṣya ca eva diśaḥ daśa

tatra mūrdhajān yamayan eva daśa diśaḥ ca vīkṣya
4. O King, the king (Duryodhana), with his thigh broken and covered in dust, was there, arranging his hair and looking intently in all ten directions.
केशान्नियम्य यत्नेन निःश्वसन्नुरगो यथा ।
संरम्भाश्रुपरीताभ्यां नेत्राभ्यामभिवीक्ष्य माम् ॥५॥
5. keśānniyamya yatnena niḥśvasannurago yathā ,
saṁrambhāśruparītābhyāṁ netrābhyāmabhivīkṣya mām.

saṃrambhāśruparītābhyām netrābhyām abhivīkṣya mām
5. yatnena keśān niyamya,
yathā uragaḥ niḥśvasan,

5. Arranging his hair with effort, sighing like a snake, he looked at me with his eyes filled with tears of rage.
बाहू धरण्यां निष्पिष्य मुहुर्मत्त इव द्विपः ।
प्रकीर्णान्मूर्धजान्धुन्वन्दन्तैर्दन्तानुपस्पृशन् ।
गर्हयन्पाण्डवं ज्येष्ठं निःश्वस्येदमथाब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. bāhū dharaṇyāṁ niṣpiṣya muhurmatta iva dvipaḥ ,
prakīrṇānmūrdhajāndhunvandantairdantānupaspṛśan ,
garhayanpāṇḍavaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ niḥśvasyedamathābravīt.
6. bāhū dharaṇyām niṣpiṣya muhuḥ mattaḥ
iva dvipaḥ prakīrṇān mūrdhajān dhunvan
dantaiḥ dantān upaspṛśan garhayan pāṇḍavam
jyeṣṭham niḥśvasya idam atha abravīt
6. dvipaḥ iva mattaḥ (san) muhuḥ dharaṇyām bāhū niṣpiṣya,
prakīrṇān mūrdhajān dhunvan,
dantaiḥ dantān upaspṛśan,
jyeṣṭham pāṇḍavam garhayan,
atha niḥśvasya idam abravīt
6. Pressing his two arms repeatedly on the earth like an enraged elephant, shaking his disheveled hair, and grinding his teeth, he censured the eldest Pāṇḍava; then, sighing, he spoke these words.
भीष्मे शांतनवे नाथे कर्णे चास्त्रभृतां वरे ।
गौतमे शकुनौ चापि द्रोणे चास्त्रभृतां वरे ॥७॥
7. bhīṣme śāṁtanave nāthe karṇe cāstrabhṛtāṁ vare ,
gautame śakunau cāpi droṇe cāstrabhṛtāṁ vare.
7. bhīṣme śāntanave nāthe karṇe ca astrabhṛtām vare
gautame śakunau ca api droṇe ca astrabhṛtām vare
7. śāntanave bhīṣme nāthe (sati),
ca astrabhṛtām vare karṇe (sati),
gautame śakunau ca api astrabhṛtām vare droṇe ca (sati)
7. When Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, was our protector; when Karṇa, the foremost among weapon-bearers; when Gautama (Kṛpa), Śakuni, and Droṇa, also the foremost among weapon-bearers, (were on our side)...
अश्वत्थाम्नि तथा शल्ये शूरे च कृतवर्मणि ।
इमामवस्थां प्राप्तोऽस्मि कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥८॥
8. aśvatthāmni tathā śalye śūre ca kṛtavarmaṇi ,
imāmavasthāṁ prāpto'smi kālo hi duratikramaḥ.
8. aśvatthāmni tathā śalye śūre ca kṛtavarmaṇi imām
avasthām prāptaḥ asmi kālaḥ hi duratikramaḥ
8. aśvatthāmni tathā śalye śūre ca kṛtavarmaṇi imām

8. Even with Ashwatthama, Shalya, and the brave Kritavarma, I have reached this state. Indeed, time (kāla) is insurmountable.
एकादशचमूभर्ता सोऽहमेतां दशां गतः ।
कालं प्राप्य महाबाहो न कश्चिदतिवर्तते ॥९॥
9. ekādaśacamūbhartā so'hametāṁ daśāṁ gataḥ ,
kālaṁ prāpya mahābāho na kaścidativartate.
9. ekādaśacamūbhartā saḥ aham etām daśām gataḥ
kālam prāpya mahābāho na kaścit ativartate
9. mahābāho saḥ aham ekādaśacamūbhartā etām
daśām gataḥ; kālam prāpya kaścit na ativartate
9. I, who was the lord of eleven armies, have come to this condition. O mighty-armed one, no one can surpass time (kāla) once it has arrived.
आख्यातव्यं मदीयानां येऽस्मिञ्जीवन्ति संगरे ।
यथाहं भीमसेनेन व्युत्क्रम्य समयं हतः ॥१०॥
10. ākhyātavyaṁ madīyānāṁ ye'smiñjīvanti saṁgare ,
yathāhaṁ bhīmasenena vyutkramya samayaṁ hataḥ.
10. ākhyātavyam madīyānām ye asmin jīvanti saṅgare
yathā aham bhīmasenena vyutkramya samayam hataḥ
10. ākhyātavyam madīyānām ye asmin saṅgare jīvanti,
yathā aham bhīmasenena samayam vyutkramya hataḥ
10. It must be narrated to my men who survive this battle how I was killed by Bhimasena, who violated the established rule.
बहूनि सुनृशंसानि कृतानि खलु पाण्डवैः ।
भूरिश्रवसि कर्णे च भीष्मे द्रोणे च श्रीमति ॥११॥
11. bahūni sunṛśaṁsāni kṛtāni khalu pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
bhūriśravasi karṇe ca bhīṣme droṇe ca śrīmati.
11. bahūni sunṛśaṃsāni kṛtāni khalu pāṇḍavaiḥ
bhūriśravasi karṇe ca bhīṣme droṇe ca śrīmati
11. khalu pāṇḍavaiḥ bahūni sunṛśaṃsāni kṛtāni
bhūriśravasi ca karṇe ca bhīṣme ca śrīmati droṇe
11. Indeed, many extremely cruel deeds were committed by the Pandavas, especially against Bhurishravas, Karna, Bhishma, and the glorious Drona.
इदं चाकीर्तिजं कर्म नृशंसैः पाण्डवैः कृतम् ।
येन ते सत्सु निर्वेदं गमिष्यन्तीति मे मतिः ॥१२॥
12. idaṁ cākīrtijaṁ karma nṛśaṁsaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtam ,
yena te satsu nirvedaṁ gamiṣyantīti me matiḥ.
12. idam ca akīrtijam karma nṛśaṃsaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtam
yena te satsu nirvedam gamiṣyanti iti me matiḥ
12. nṛśaṃsaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ idam akīrtijam karma ca kṛtam
yena te satsu nirvedam gamiṣyanti iti me matiḥ
12. And this deed, born of infamy, was done by the cruel Pāṇḍavas, by which they will certainly experience disgrace (nirveda) among good people; this is my opinion.
का प्रीतिः सत्त्वयुक्तस्य कृत्वोपधिकृतं जयम् ।
को वा समयभेत्तारं बुधः संमन्तुमर्हति ॥१३॥
13. kā prītiḥ sattvayuktasya kṛtvopadhikṛtaṁ jayam ,
ko vā samayabhettāraṁ budhaḥ saṁmantumarhati.
13. kā prītiḥ sattvayuktasya kṛtvā upadhikṛtam jayam
kaḥ vā samayabhettāram budhaḥ saṃmantum arhati
13. upadhikṛtam jayam kṛtvā sattvayuktasya kā prītiḥ
vā kaḥ budhaḥ samayabhettāram saṃmantum arhati
13. What satisfaction can there be for one endowed with integrity (sattva) who achieves a victory gained by deceit? Or what wise person would approve of a breaker of pledges?
अधर्मेण जयं लब्ध्वा को नु हृष्येत पण्डितः ।
यथा संहृष्यते पापः पाण्डुपुत्रो वृकोदरः ॥१४॥
14. adharmeṇa jayaṁ labdhvā ko nu hṛṣyeta paṇḍitaḥ ,
yathā saṁhṛṣyate pāpaḥ pāṇḍuputro vṛkodaraḥ.
14. adharmeṇa jayam labdhvā kaḥ nu hṛṣyeta paṇḍitaḥ
yathā saṃhṛṣyate pāpaḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ vṛkodaraḥ
14. adharmeṇa jayam labdhvā kaḥ paṇḍitaḥ nu hṛṣyeta
yathā pāpaḥ pāṇḍuputraḥ vṛkodaraḥ saṃhṛṣyate
14. Having gained victory through unrighteousness (adharma), what wise person would truly rejoice? Only a wicked one like the son of Pāṇḍu, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), would greatly rejoice.
किं नु चित्रमतस्त्वद्य भग्नसक्थस्य यन्मम ।
क्रुद्धेन भीमसेनेन पादेन मृदितं शिरः ॥१५॥
15. kiṁ nu citramatastvadya bhagnasakthasya yanmama ,
kruddhena bhīmasenena pādena mṛditaṁ śiraḥ.
15. kim nu citram ataḥ tu adya bhagnasakthasya yat
mama kruddhena bhīmasenena pādena mṛditam śiraḥ
15. ataḥ nu adya bhagnasakthasya mama śiraḥ kruddhena
bhīmasenena pādena mṛditam yat tu kim citram
15. What, then, is surprising about this, that today my head, belonging to me with broken thighs, was crushed by the foot of the enraged Bhīmasena?
प्रतपन्तं श्रिया जुष्टं वर्तमानं च बन्धुषु ।
एवं कुर्यान्नरो यो हि स वै संजय पूजितः ॥१६॥
16. pratapantaṁ śriyā juṣṭaṁ vartamānaṁ ca bandhuṣu ,
evaṁ kuryānnaro yo hi sa vai saṁjaya pūjitaḥ.
16. pratapantam śriyā juṣṭam vartamānam ca bandhuṣu
evam kuryāt naraḥ yaḥ hi saḥ vai saṃjaya pūjitaḥ
16. yaḥ naraḥ pratapantam śriyā juṣṭam ca bandhuṣu
vartamānam evam kuryāt hi saḥ vai saṃjaya pūjitaḥ
16. Indeed, the man who is powerful, endowed with glory, and behaves appropriately among his relatives - he, O Sanjaya, is truly honored.
अभिज्ञौ क्षत्रधर्मस्य मम माता पिता च मे ।
तौ हि संजय दुःखार्तौ विज्ञाप्यौ वचनान्मम ॥१७॥
17. abhijñau kṣatradharmasya mama mātā pitā ca me ,
tau hi saṁjaya duḥkhārtau vijñāpyau vacanānmama.
17. abhijñau kṣatradharmasya mama mātā pitā ca me
tau hi saṃjaya duḥkhārtau vijñāpyau vacanāt mama
17. mama mātā ca me pitā kṣatradharmasya abhijñau hi
tau duḥkhārtau saṃjaya mama vacanāt vijñāpyau
17. My mother and my father are indeed knowledgeable about the constitutional principles (dharma) of the warrior class. Therefore, O Sanjaya, those two, distressed by sorrow, must be informed of my words.
इष्टं भृत्या भृताः सम्यग्भूः प्रशास्ता ससागरा ।
मूर्ध्नि स्थितममित्राणां जीवतामेव संजय ॥१८॥
18. iṣṭaṁ bhṛtyā bhṛtāḥ samyagbhūḥ praśāstā sasāgarā ,
mūrdhni sthitamamitrāṇāṁ jīvatāmeva saṁjaya.
18. iṣṭam bhṛtyāḥ bhṛtāḥ samyak bhūḥ praśāstā sasāgarā
mūrdhni sthitam amitrāṇām jīvatām eva saṃjaya
18. iṣṭam bhṛtyāḥ samyak bhṛtāḥ bhūḥ sasāgarā praśāstā
amitrāṇām jīvatām eva mūrdhni sthitam saṃjaya
18. My desires have been fulfilled, my servants properly maintained, and the entire earth, including its oceans, has been well-governed. Indeed, O Sanjaya, [my authority is] established upon the heads of my living enemies.
दत्ता दाया यथाशक्ति मित्राणां च प्रियं कृतम् ।
अमित्रा बाधिताः सर्वे को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥१९॥
19. dattā dāyā yathāśakti mitrāṇāṁ ca priyaṁ kṛtam ,
amitrā bādhitāḥ sarve ko nu svantataro mayā.
19. dattāḥ dāyāḥ yathāśakti mitrāṇām ca priyam kṛtam
amitrāḥ bādhitāḥ sarve kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
19. dāyāḥ yathāśakti dattāḥ (santi)
ca mitrāṇām priyam kṛtam (asti)
sarve amitrāḥ bādhitāḥ (santi)
nu kaḥ mayā svantataraḥ (asti)
19. Inheritances have been distributed according to ability, and kindness has been shown to friends. All enemies have been thwarted. Who, indeed, is more fortunate than I?
यातानि परराष्ट्राणि नृपा भुक्ताश्च दासवत् ।
प्रियेभ्यः प्रकृतं साधु को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥२०॥
20. yātāni pararāṣṭrāṇi nṛpā bhuktāśca dāsavat ,
priyebhyaḥ prakṛtaṁ sādhu ko nu svantataro mayā.
20. yātāni pararāṣṭrāṇi nṛpāḥ bhuktāḥ ca dāsavat
priyebhyaḥ prakṛtam sādhu kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
20. mayā pararāṣṭrāṇi yātāni ca nṛpāḥ dāsavat bhuktāḥ
priyebhyaḥ sādhu prakṛtam kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
20. Foreign countries have been traversed; kings have been brought under dominion as if they were servants; good things have been done for dear ones. Who, indeed, is happier than I?
मानिता बान्धवाः सर्वे मान्यः संपूजितो जनः ।
त्रितयं सेवितं सर्वं को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥२१॥
21. mānitā bāndhavāḥ sarve mānyaḥ saṁpūjito janaḥ ,
tritayaṁ sevitaṁ sarvaṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
21. mānitāḥ bāndhavāḥ sarve mānyaḥ sampūjitaḥ janaḥ
tritayam sevitam sarvam kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
21. sarve bāndhavāḥ mānitāḥ mānyaḥ janaḥ sampūjitaḥ
sarvam tritayam sevitam kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
21. All relatives have been honored; venerable people have been revered; and all three (moral duty (dharma), prosperity, and pleasure) have been served. Who, indeed, is happier than I?
आज्ञप्तं नृपमुख्येषु मानः प्राप्तः सुदुर्लभः ।
आजानेयैस्तथा यातं को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥२२॥
22. ājñaptaṁ nṛpamukhyeṣu mānaḥ prāptaḥ sudurlabhaḥ ,
ājāneyaistathā yātaṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
22. ājñaptam nṛpamukhyeṣu mānaḥ prāptaḥ sudurlabhaḥ
ājāneyaiḥ tathā yātam kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
22. nṛpamukhyeṣu ājñaptam sudurlabhaḥ mānaḥ prāptaḥ
tathā ājāneyaiḥ yātam kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
22. Commands have been issued to principal kings; honor (māna), which is exceedingly difficult to obtain, has been acquired; and noble horses have been ridden. Who, indeed, is happier than I?
अधीतं विधिवद्दत्तं प्राप्तमायुर्निरामयम् ।
स्वधर्मेण जिता लोकाः को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥२३॥
23. adhītaṁ vidhivaddattaṁ prāptamāyurnirāmayam ,
svadharmeṇa jitā lokāḥ ko nu svantataro mayā.
23. adhītam vidhivat dattam prāptam āyuḥ nirāmayam
svadharmeṇa jitāḥ lokāḥ kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
23. adhītam vidhivat dattam nirāmayam āyuḥ prāptam
svadharmeṇa lokāḥ jitāḥ kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ
23. Knowledge has been acquired methodically, and gifts have been given; a life free from illness has been attained; and worlds have been conquered through adherence to one's own intrinsic nature (dharma). Who, indeed, is happier than I?
दिष्ट्या नाहं जितः संख्ये परान्प्रेष्यवदाश्रितः ।
दिष्ट्या मे विपुला लक्ष्मीर्मृते त्वन्यं गता विभो ॥२४॥
24. diṣṭyā nāhaṁ jitaḥ saṁkhye parānpreṣyavadāśritaḥ ,
diṣṭyā me vipulā lakṣmīrmṛte tvanyaṁ gatā vibho.
24. diṣṭyā na aham jitaḥ saṃkhye parān preṣyavat āśritaḥ
diṣṭyā me vipulā lakṣmīḥ mṛte tu anyam gatā vibho
24. diṣṭyā aham saṃkhye jitaḥ na,
preṣyavat parān āśritaḥ (na).
diṣṭyā me vipulā lakṣmīḥ mṛte tu anyam na gatā,
vibho.
24. Fortunately, I was not defeated in battle and forced to live as a servant dependent on others. Fortunately, upon my death, my vast fortune did not pass to another, O lord.
यदिष्टं क्षत्रबन्धूनां स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठताम् ।
निधनं तन्मया प्राप्तं को नु स्वन्ततरो मया ॥२५॥
25. yadiṣṭaṁ kṣatrabandhūnāṁ svadharmamanutiṣṭhatām ,
nidhanaṁ tanmayā prāptaṁ ko nu svantataro mayā.
25. yat iṣṭam kṣatrabandhūnām svadharmam anutiṣṭhatām
nidhanam tat mayā prāptam kaḥ nu svantataraḥ mayā
25. kṣatrabandhūnām svadharmam anutiṣṭhatām yat iṣṭam nidhanam,
tat mayā prāptam.
kaḥ nu mayā svantataraḥ?
25. That death which is desired by kṣatriya kinsmen upholding their own constitution (dharma) - that death has been attained by me. Who, indeed, is more fortunate than I?
दिष्ट्या नाहं परावृत्तो वैरात्प्राकृतवज्जितः ।
दिष्ट्या न विमतिं कांचिद्भजित्वा तु पराजितः ॥२६॥
26. diṣṭyā nāhaṁ parāvṛtto vairātprākṛtavajjitaḥ ,
diṣṭyā na vimatiṁ kāṁcidbhajitvā tu parājitaḥ.
26. diṣṭyā na aham parāvṛttaḥ vairāt prākṛtavat jitaḥ
diṣṭyā na vimatim kām cit bhajitvā tu parājitaḥ
26. diṣṭyā aham vairāt prākṛtavat jitaḥ na parāvṛttaḥ.
diṣṭyā kāṃcit vimatim bhajitvā tu na parājitaḥ.
26. Fortunately, I was not defeated and forced to retreat from the conflict like an ordinary person. Fortunately, I was not utterly vanquished by embracing any wrong notion or internal disagreement.
सुप्तं वाथ प्रमत्तं वा यथा हन्याद्विषेण वा ।
एवं व्युत्क्रान्तधर्मेण व्युत्क्रम्य समयं हतः ॥२७॥
27. suptaṁ vātha pramattaṁ vā yathā hanyādviṣeṇa vā ,
evaṁ vyutkrāntadharmeṇa vyutkramya samayaṁ hataḥ.
27. suptam vā atha pramattam vā yathā hanyāt viṣeṇa vā
evam vyutkrāntadharmeṇa vyutkramya samayam hataḥ
27. yathā suptam vā pramattam vā,
viṣeṇa vā (kaścit) hanyāt,
evam vyutkrāntadharmeṇa (puruṣeṇa) samayam vyutkramya (aham) hataḥ.
27. Just as one might kill someone who is sleeping, or careless, or with poison, so too have I been killed by one who transgressed the natural law (dharma), having violated the agreement.
अश्वत्थामा महाभागः कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ।
कृपः शारद्वतश्चैव वक्तव्या वचनान्मम ॥२८॥
28. aśvatthāmā mahābhāgaḥ kṛtavarmā ca sātvataḥ ,
kṛpaḥ śāradvataścaiva vaktavyā vacanānmama.

28. Aśvatthāmā, the greatly fortunate one, and Kṛtavarmā, the Sātvata, as well as Kṛpa, the son of Śaradvat – these should be addressed with my words.
अधर्मेण प्रवृत्तानां पाण्डवानामनेकशः ।
विश्वासं समयघ्नानां न यूयं गन्तुमर्हथ ॥२९॥
29. adharmeṇa pravṛttānāṁ pāṇḍavānāmanekaśaḥ ,
viśvāsaṁ samayaghnānāṁ na yūyaṁ gantumarhatha.
29. adharmeṇa pravṛttānām pāṇḍavānām anekasaḥ
viśvāsam samayaghnānām na yūyam gantum arhatha
29. yūyam anekasaḥ adharmeṇa pravṛttānām samayaghnānām
pāṇḍavānām viśvāsam gantum na arhatha
29. You all should not place your trust (viśvāsa) in the Pāṇḍavas, who are repeatedly engaged in unrighteousness (adharma) and are breakers of their vows.
वातिकांश्चाब्रवीद्राजा पुत्रस्ते सत्यविक्रमः ।
अधर्माद्भीमसेनेन निहतोऽहं यथा रणे ॥३०॥
30. vātikāṁścābravīdrājā putraste satyavikramaḥ ,
adharmādbhīmasenena nihato'haṁ yathā raṇe.
30. vātikān ca abravīt rājā putraḥ te satyavikramaḥ
adharmāt bhīmasenena nihataḥ aham yathā raṇe
30. te satyavikramaḥ rājā putraḥ vātikān ca abravīt:
"yathā aham adharmāt bhīmasenena raṇe nihataḥ"
30. Your son, the king of true valor, spoke to the Vātikas and others, saying, "I was slain in battle by Bhīmasena through unrighteousness (adharma)."
सोऽहं द्रोणं स्वर्गगतं शल्यकर्णावुभौ तथा ।
वृषसेनं महावीर्यं शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् ॥३१॥
31. so'haṁ droṇaṁ svargagataṁ śalyakarṇāvubhau tathā ,
vṛṣasenaṁ mahāvīryaṁ śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam.
31. saḥ aham Droṇam svargagatam śalya-karṇau ubhau
tathā vṛṣasenam mahāvīryam śakunim ca api saubalam
31. saḥ aham (asmi) Droṇam svargagatam
śalya-karṇau ubhau tathā
vṛṣasenam mahāvīryam ca api
saubalam śakunim (ca) (gataḥ asmi)
31. I, that very one, (am now with) Droṇa, who has gone to heaven; and also both Śalya and Karṇa; and the greatly valorous Vṛṣasena; and also Śakuni, the son of Subala.
जलसंधं महावीर्यं भगदत्तं च पार्थिवम् ।
सौमदत्तिं महेष्वासं सैन्धवं च जयद्रथम् ॥३२॥
32. jalasaṁdhaṁ mahāvīryaṁ bhagadattaṁ ca pārthivam ,
saumadattiṁ maheṣvāsaṁ saindhavaṁ ca jayadratham.

saumadattim maheṣvāsam saindhavam ca jayadratham
32. jalasaṃdham mahāvīryam bhagadattam ca pārthivam

32. Jalasandha, the highly powerful, and King Bhagadatta; Saumadatti, the great archer, and Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu.
दुःशासनपुरोगांश्च भ्रातॄनात्मसमांस्तथा ।
दौःशासनिं च विक्रान्तं लक्ष्मणं चात्मजावुभौ ॥३३॥
33. duḥśāsanapurogāṁśca bhrātṝnātmasamāṁstathā ,
dauḥśāsaniṁ ca vikrāntaṁ lakṣmaṇaṁ cātmajāvubhau.
33. duḥśāsanapuragān ca bhrātṝn ātmasamān tathā
dauḥśāsanim ca vikrāntam lakṣmaṇam ca ātmajau ubhau
33. duḥśāsanapuragān ca bhrātṝn ātmasamān tathā
dauḥśāsanim ca vikrāntam lakṣmaṇam ca ātmajau ubhau
33. And likewise, my brothers led by Duḥśāsana, who are equal to myself; and both my sons, the valiant Dauḥśāsani and Lakṣmaṇa.
एतांश्चान्यांश्च सुबहून्मदीयांश्च सहस्रशः ।
पृष्ठतोऽनुगमिष्यामि सार्थहीन इवाध्वगः ॥३४॥
34. etāṁścānyāṁśca subahūnmadīyāṁśca sahasraśaḥ ,
pṛṣṭhato'nugamiṣyāmi sārthahīna ivādhvagaḥ.
34. etān ca anyān ca subahūn madīyān ca sahasraśaḥ
pṛṣṭhataḥ anugamiṣyāmi sārthahīna iva adhvagaḥ
34. etān ca anyān ca subahūn madīyān ca sahasraśaḥ
pṛṣṭhataḥ anugamiṣyāmi adhvagaḥ sārthahīnaḥ iva
34. And these, and many thousands of my other men, I shall follow from behind, like a traveler who is without companions.
कथं भ्रातॄन्हताञ्श्रुत्वा भर्तारं च स्वसा मम ।
रोरूयमाणा दुःखार्ता दुःशला सा भविष्यति ॥३५॥
35. kathaṁ bhrātṝnhatāñśrutvā bhartāraṁ ca svasā mama ,
rorūyamāṇā duḥkhārtā duḥśalā sā bhaviṣyati.
35. katham bhrātṝn hatān śrutvā bhartāram ca svasā
mama rorūyamāṇā duḥkhārtā duḥśalā sā bhaviṣyati
35. katham mama svasā duḥśalā sā duḥkhārtā rorūyamāṇā
bhaviṣyati bhrātṝn ca bhartāram ca hatān śrutvā
35. How will my sister Duḥśalā be, grief-stricken and crying loudly, after hearing that her brothers and her husband have been slain?
स्नुषाभिः प्रस्नुषाभिश्च वृद्धो राजा पिता मम ।
गान्धारीसहितः क्रोशन्कां गतिं प्रतिपत्स्यते ॥३६॥
36. snuṣābhiḥ prasnuṣābhiśca vṛddho rājā pitā mama ,
gāndhārīsahitaḥ krośankāṁ gatiṁ pratipatsyate.
36. snuṣābhiḥ prasnuṣābhiḥ ca vṛddhaḥ rājā pitā mama
gāndhārīsahitaḥ krośan kām gatim pratipatsyate
36. mama vṛddhaḥ rājā pitā gāndhārīsahitaḥ snuṣābhiḥ

36. What state will my aged father, the king, attain, accompanied by Gāndhārī and lamenting with his daughters-in-law and granddaughters-in-law?
नूनं लक्ष्मणमातापि हतपुत्रा हतेश्वरा ।
विनाशं यास्यति क्षिप्रं कल्याणी पृथुलोचना ॥३७॥
37. nūnaṁ lakṣmaṇamātāpi hataputrā hateśvarā ,
vināśaṁ yāsyati kṣipraṁ kalyāṇī pṛthulocanā.
37. nūnam lakṣmaṇamātā api hataputrā hateśvarā
vināśam yāsyati kṣipram kalyāṇī pṛthulocanā
37. nūnam kalyāṇī pṛthulocanā lakṣmaṇamātā api

37. Surely, Lakṣmaṇa's mother, the blessed, broad-eyed woman, having lost her son and husband, will swiftly meet her destruction.
यदि जानाति चार्वाकः परिव्राड्वाग्विशारदः ।
करिष्यति महाभागो ध्रुवं सोऽपचितिं मम ॥३८॥
38. yadi jānāti cārvākaḥ parivrāḍvāgviśāradaḥ ,
kariṣyati mahābhāgo dhruvaṁ so'pacitiṁ mama.
38. yadi jānāti cārvākaḥ parivrāj vāgviśāradaḥ
kariṣyati mahābhāgaḥ dhruvam saḥ apacitim mama
38. yadi vāgviśāradaḥ parivrāj cārvākaḥ jānāti,
saḥ mahābhāgaḥ dhruvam mama apacitim kariṣyati
38. If Cārvāka, the eloquent wandering ascetic, knows this, that highly esteemed person will certainly carry out retribution for me.
समन्तपञ्चके पुण्ये त्रिषु लोकेषु विश्रुते ।
अहं निधनमासाद्य लोकान्प्राप्स्यामि शाश्वतान् ॥३९॥
39. samantapañcake puṇye triṣu lokeṣu viśrute ,
ahaṁ nidhanamāsādya lokānprāpsyāmi śāśvatān.
39. samantapañcake puṇye triṣu lokeṣu viśrute
aham nidhanam āsādya lokān prāpsyāmi śāśvatān
39. triṣu lokeṣu viśrute puṇye samantapañcake
nidhanam āsādya aham śāśvatān lokān prāpsyāmi
39. Having met my death in the sacred Samantapañcaka, which is renowned in the three worlds, I will attain eternal realms.
ततो जनसहस्राणि बाष्पपूर्णानि मारिष ।
प्रलापं नृपतेः श्रुत्वा विद्रवन्ति दिशो दश ॥४०॥
40. tato janasahasrāṇi bāṣpapūrṇāni māriṣa ,
pralāpaṁ nṛpateḥ śrutvā vidravanti diśo daśa.
40. tataḥ jana-sahasrāṇi bāṣpa-pūrṇāni māriṣa
pralāpaṃ nṛpateḥ śrutvā vidravanti diśaḥ daśa
40. māriṣa tataḥ bāṣpa-pūrṇāni jana-sahasrāṇi
nṛpateḥ pralāpaṃ śrutvā daśa diśaḥ vidravanti
40. O respected one, then thousands of people, their eyes filled with tears, fled in all ten directions after hearing the king's lamentation.
ससागरवना घोरा पृथिवी सचराचरा ।
चचालाथ सनिर्ह्रादा दिशश्चैवाविलाभवन् ॥४१॥
41. sasāgaravanā ghorā pṛthivī sacarācarā ,
cacālātha sanirhrādā diśaścaivāvilābhavan.
41. sa-sāgara-vanā ghorā pṛthivī sa-cara-acarā cacāla
atha sa-nirhrādā diśaḥ ca eva avilā abhavan
41. atha sa-sāgara-vanā sa-cara-acarā sa-nirhrādā
ghorā pṛthivī cacāla ca diśaḥ eva avilā abhavan
41. The terrible earth, along with its oceans, forests, and all animate and inanimate beings, then trembled with a great roar, and the directions indeed became turbulent.
ते द्रोणपुत्रमासाद्य यथावृत्तं न्यवेदयन् ।
व्यवहारं गदायुद्धे पार्थिवस्य च घातनम् ॥४२॥
42. te droṇaputramāsādya yathāvṛttaṁ nyavedayan ,
vyavahāraṁ gadāyuddhe pārthivasya ca ghātanam.
42. te droṇa-putram āsādya yathā-vṛttaṃ nyavedayan
vyavahāraṃ gadā-yuddhe pārthivasya ca ghātanam
42. te droṇa-putram āsādya yathā-vṛttaṃ ca gadā-yuddhe
vyavahāraṃ pārthivasya ghātanam nyavedayan
42. Having approached the son of Droṇa, they reported the entire sequence of events: the conduct of the mace-fight and the killing of the king.
तदाख्याय ततः सर्वे द्रोणपुत्रस्य भारत ।
ध्यात्वा च सुचिरं कालं जग्मुरार्ता यथागतम् ॥४३॥
43. tadākhyāya tataḥ sarve droṇaputrasya bhārata ,
dhyātvā ca suciraṁ kālaṁ jagmurārtā yathāgatam.
43. tat ākhyāya tataḥ sarve droṇa-putrasya bhārata
dhyātvā ca su-ciraṃ kālam jagmuḥ ārtā yathā-gatam
43. bhārata tataḥ sarve ārtā droṇa-putrasya tat ākhyāya
ca su-ciraṃ kālam dhyātvā yathā-gatam jagmuḥ
43. O descendant of Bharata, having reported that to the son of Droṇa, all of them, distressed, then reflected (dhyāna) for a very long time, and departed the way they had arrived.
