ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
अतिभारोद्यतस्यैव भारापनयनं महत् ।
पराश्वासकरं वाक्यमिदं मे भवतः श्रुतम् ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
atibhārodyatasyaiva bhārāpanayanaṁ mahat ,
parāśvāsakaraṁ vākyamidaṁ me bhavataḥ śrutam.

mahat parāśvāsakaram vākyam idam me bhavataḥ śrutam
1. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca bhavataḥ me śrutam idam vākyam

1. The brahmin said: "This statement, heard by me from you, is like the great removal of a burden for one struggling under an excessive load; it provides immense solace."
अध्वक्लान्तस्य शयनं स्थानक्लान्तस्य चासनम् ।
तृषितस्य च पानीयं क्षुधार्तस्य च भोजनम् ॥२॥
2. adhvaklāntasya śayanaṁ sthānaklāntasya cāsanam ,
tṛṣitasya ca pānīyaṁ kṣudhārtasya ca bhojanam.
2. adhvaklāntasya śayanam sthānaklāntasya ca āsanam
tṛṣitasya ca pānīyam kṣudhārtasya ca bhojanam
2. adhvaklāntasya śayanam sthānaklāntasya ca āsanam
tṛṣitasya ca pānīyam kṣudhārtasya ca bhojanam
2. For one weary from travel, there is sleep; for one weary from standing, a seat. And for the thirsty, water; and for the one afflicted by hunger, food.
ईप्सितस्येव संप्राप्तिरन्नस्य समयेऽतिथेः ।
एषितस्यात्मनः काले वृद्धस्येव सुतो यथा ॥३॥
3. īpsitasyeva saṁprāptirannasya samaye'titheḥ ,
eṣitasyātmanaḥ kāle vṛddhasyeva suto yathā.
3. īpsitasya eva samprāptiḥ annasya samaye atitheḥ
eṣitasya ātmanaḥ kāle vṛddhasya eva sutaḥ yathā
3. atitheḥ samaye īpsitasya annasya samprāptiḥ eva
vṛddhasya kāle eṣitasya ātmanaḥ sutaḥ iva yathā
3. It is like the timely attainment of desired food for a guest, or like a longed-for son (ātman) appearing at the right time for an old person.
मनसा चिन्तितस्येव प्रीतिस्निग्धस्य दर्शनम् ।
प्रह्रादयति मां वाक्यं भवता यदुदीरितम् ॥४॥
4. manasā cintitasyeva prītisnigdhasya darśanam ,
prahrādayati māṁ vākyaṁ bhavatā yadudīritam.
4. manasā cintitasya eva prītisnigdhāsya darśanam
prahrādayati mām vākyam bhavatā yat udīritam
4. yat bhavatā udīritam vākyam mām prahrādayati
manasā cintitasya eva prītisnigdhāsya darśanam
4. Just as the sight of a beloved and affectionate person, contemplated in the mind, brings joy; so too, this statement, which has been uttered by you, delights me.
दत्तचक्षुरिवाकाशे पश्यामि विमृशामि च ।
प्रज्ञानवचनाद्योऽयमुपदेशो हि मे कृतः ।
बाढमेवं करिष्यामि यथा मां भाषते भवान् ॥५॥
5. dattacakṣurivākāśe paśyāmi vimṛśāmi ca ,
prajñānavacanādyo'yamupadeśo hi me kṛtaḥ ,
bāḍhamevaṁ kariṣyāmi yathā māṁ bhāṣate bhavān.
5. datta-cakṣuḥ iva ākāśe paśyāmi
vimṛśāmi ca prajñāna-vacanāt yaḥ ayam
upadeśaḥ hi me kṛtaḥ bāḍham evam
kariṣyāmi yathā mām bhāṣate bhavān
5. With my gaze fixed upon the sky, as it were, I perceive and reflect. This instruction, which has indeed been given to me from a statement of profound insight, I will certainly carry out exactly as you, revered sir, have spoken to me.
इहेमां रजनीं साधो निवसस्व मया सह ।
प्रभाते यास्यति भवान्पर्याश्वस्तः सुखोषितः ।
असौ हि भगवान्सूर्यो मन्दरश्मिरवाङ्मुखः ॥६॥
6. ihemāṁ rajanīṁ sādho nivasasva mayā saha ,
prabhāte yāsyati bhavānparyāśvastaḥ sukhoṣitaḥ ,
asau hi bhagavānsūryo mandaraśmiravāṅmukhaḥ.
6. iha imām rajanīm sādho nivasasva
mayā saha prabhāte yāsyati bhavān
paryāśvastaḥ sukhoṣitaḥ asau hi
bhagavān sūryaḥ manda-raśmiḥ avāṅ-mukhaḥ
6. O good one, stay here with me for this night. In the morning, you will depart, thoroughly refreshed and having rested comfortably, for indeed, that divine sun (Sūrya) now has faint rays and is facing downwards (setting).
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततस्तेन कृतातिथ्यः सोऽतिथिः शत्रुसूदन ।
उवास किल तां रात्रिं सह तेन द्विजेन वै ॥७॥
7. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tatastena kṛtātithyaḥ so'tithiḥ śatrusūdana ,
uvāsa kila tāṁ rātriṁ saha tena dvijena vai.
7. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tataḥ tena kṛtātithyaḥ saḥ atithiḥ
śatru-sūdana uvāsa kila tām rātrim saha tena dvijena vai
7. Bhishma said: 'Then, O slayer of foes, that guest, having been shown hospitality by him, indeed stayed that night with that twice-born (dvija) one.'
तत्तच्च धर्मसंयुक्तं तयोः कथयतोस्तदा ।
व्यतीता सा निशा कृत्स्ना सुखेन दिवसोपमा ॥८॥
8. tattacca dharmasaṁyuktaṁ tayoḥ kathayatostadā ,
vyatītā sā niśā kṛtsnā sukhena divasopamā.
8. tat tat ca dharma-saṃyuktam tayoḥ kathayatoḥ
tadā vyatītā sā niśā kṛtsnā sukhena divasopamā
8. As those two conversed then about various topics related to (natural law) dharma, that entire night passed pleasantly, seeming like a day.
ततः प्रभातसमये सोऽतिथिस्तेन पूजितः ।
ब्राह्मणेन यथाशक्त्या स्वकार्यमभिकाङ्क्षता ॥९॥
9. tataḥ prabhātasamaye so'tithistena pūjitaḥ ,
brāhmaṇena yathāśaktyā svakāryamabhikāṅkṣatā.
9. tataḥ prabhātasamaye saḥ atithiḥ tena pūjitaḥ
brāhmaṇena yathāśaktyā svakāryam abhikāṅkṣatā
9. Then, at dawn, that guest was honored by the brahmin, who, desiring his own purpose, treated him with respect to the best of his ability.
ततः स विप्रः कृतधर्मनिश्चयः कृताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वजनेन धर्मवित् ।
यथोपदिष्टं भुजगेन्द्रसंश्रयं जगाम काले सुकृतैकनिश्चयः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ sa vipraḥ kṛtadharmaniścayaḥ; kṛtābhyanujñaḥ svajanena dharmavit ,
yathopadiṣṭaṁ bhujagendrasaṁśrayaṁ; jagāma kāle sukṛtaikaniścayaḥ.
10. tataḥ saḥ vipraḥ kṛtadharmanिश्चayaḥ
kṛtābhyanuñaḥ svajanena dharmavit
yathā upadiṣṭam bhujagendrasaṃśrayam
jagāma kāle sukṛtaikanिश्चayaḥ
10. Then that brahmin, who understood his proper conduct (dharma), having firmly resolved on his course of action and obtained permission from his family, departed at the opportune moment for the abode of the lord of serpents, exactly as he had been instructed, his sole determination being to perform virtuous actions.
