वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्राणाधिकं भीमसेनं कृतविद्यं धनंजयम् ।
दुर्योधनो लक्षयित्व पर्यतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
prāṇādhikaṁ bhīmasenaṁ kṛtavidyaṁ dhanaṁjayam ,
duryodhano lakṣayitva paryatapyata durmatiḥ.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: The evil-minded Duryodhana, observing Bhīmasena, who was dearer than life (prāṇādhika), and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), who was accomplished in knowledge (kṛtavidya), became distressed.
ततो वैकर्तनः कर्णः शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
अनेकैरभ्युपायैस्ताञ्जिघांसन्ति स्म पाण्डवान् ॥२॥
2. tato vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
anekairabhyupāyaistāñjighāṁsanti sma pāṇḍavān.
2. tataḥ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
anekaiḥ abhyupāyaiḥ tān jighāṃsanti sma pāṇḍavān
2. Then Karṇa, son of Vikartana (Vaikartana), and Śakuni, son of Subala (Saubala), sought to kill the Pāṇḍavas using numerous schemes.
पाण्डवाश्चापि तत्सर्वं प्रत्यजानन्नरिंदमाः ।
उद्भावनमकुर्वन्तो विदुरस्य मते स्थिताः ॥३॥
3. pāṇḍavāścāpi tatsarvaṁ pratyajānannariṁdamāḥ ,
udbhāvanamakurvanto vidurasya mate sthitāḥ.
3. pāṇḍavāḥ ca api tat sarvam pratyajānann arimdamāḥ
udbhāvanam akurvantaḥ vidurasya mate sthitāḥ
3. The Pāṇḍavas, those vanquishers of foes, also recognized all of that. Remaining steadfast in Vidura's counsel, they did not reveal their understanding.
गुणैः समुदितान्दृष्ट्वा पौराः पाण्डुसुतांस्तदा ।
कथयन्ति स्म संभूय चत्वरेषु सभासु च ॥४॥
4. guṇaiḥ samuditāndṛṣṭvā paurāḥ pāṇḍusutāṁstadā ,
kathayanti sma saṁbhūya catvareṣu sabhāsu ca.

kathayanti sma saṃbhūya catvareṣu sabhāsu ca
4. Then, having seen the sons of Pāṇḍu endowed with many virtues, the citizens gathered together and spoke about it in the town squares and assembly halls.
प्रज्ञाचक्षुरचक्षुष्ट्वाद्धृतराष्ट्रो जनेश्वरः ।
राज्यमप्राप्तवान्पूर्वं स कथं नृपतिर्भवेत् ॥५॥
5. prajñācakṣuracakṣuṣṭvāddhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ ,
rājyamaprāptavānpūrvaṁ sa kathaṁ nṛpatirbhavet.
5. prajñācakṣuḥ acakṣuṣṭvāt dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ janeśvaraḥ
rājyam aprāptavān pūrvam saḥ katham nṛpatiḥ bhavet
5. Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, whose 'eyes' are wisdom (prajñā-cakṣuḥ), did not obtain the kingdom previously due to his actual blindness (acakṣuṣṭva). How, then, can he now be a ruler?
तथा भीष्मः शांतनवः सत्यसंधो महाव्रतः ।
प्रत्याख्याय पुरा राज्यं नाद्य जातु ग्रहीष्यति ॥६॥
6. tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavaḥ satyasaṁdho mahāvrataḥ ,
pratyākhyāya purā rājyaṁ nādya jātu grahīṣyati.
6. tathā bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ satyasaṃdhaḥ mahāvrataḥ
pratyākhyāya purā rājyam na adya jātu grahīṣyati
6. Similarly, Bhīṣma, the son of Śantanu, who is true to his pledge (satyasaṃdha) and upholds great vows (mahāvrata), will certainly not accept the kingdom now, as he had refused it before.
ते वयं पाण्डवं ज्येष्ठं तरुणं वृद्धशीलिनम् ।
अभिषिञ्चाम साध्वद्य सत्यं करुणवेदिनम् ॥७॥
7. te vayaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ taruṇaṁ vṛddhaśīlinam ,
abhiṣiñcāma sādhvadya satyaṁ karuṇavedinam.
7. te vayam pāṇḍavam jyeṣṭham taruṇam vṛddhaśīlinam
abhiṣiñcāma sādhu adya satyam karuṇavedinam
7. Let us, the people, therefore rightly anoint today the eldest Pāṇḍava, who is young but possesses the noble character of elders, is truthful, and knows compassion.
स हि भीष्मं शांतनवं धृतराष्ट्रं च धर्मवित् ।
सपुत्रं विविधैर्भोगैर्योजयिष्यति पूजयन् ॥८॥
8. sa hi bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca dharmavit ,
saputraṁ vividhairbhogairyojayiṣyati pūjayan.
8. sa hi bhīṣmam śāntanavam dhṛtarāṣṭram ca dharmavit
saputram vividhaiḥ bhogaiḥ yojayiṣyati pūjayan
8. Indeed, Vidura, who understands natural law (dharma), will respectfully provide Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, and Dhritarashtra, along with his son, with various enjoyments.
तेषां दुर्योधनः श्रुत्वा तानि वाक्यानि भाषताम् ।
युधिष्ठिरानुरक्तानां पर्यतप्यत दुर्मतिः ॥९॥
9. teṣāṁ duryodhanaḥ śrutvā tāni vākyāni bhāṣatām ,
yudhiṣṭhirānuraktānāṁ paryatapyata durmatiḥ.
9. teṣām duryodhanaḥ śrutvā tāni vākyāni bhāṣatām
yudhiṣṭhirānuraktānām paryatapyata durmatiḥ
9. The evil-minded Duryodhana, having heard those words spoken by people devoted to Yudhishthira, became greatly distressed.
स तप्यमानो दुष्टात्मा तेषां वाचो न चक्षमे ।
ईर्ष्यया चाभिसंतप्तो धृतराष्ट्रमुपागमत् ॥१०॥
10. sa tapyamāno duṣṭātmā teṣāṁ vāco na cakṣame ,
īrṣyayā cābhisaṁtapto dhṛtarāṣṭramupāgamat.
10. saḥ tapyamānaḥ duṣṭātmā teṣām vācaḥ na cakṣame
īrṣyayā ca abhisaṁtaptaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram upāgamat
10. That wicked-minded person, suffering, could not tolerate their words. Agitated by envy, he approached Dhritarashtra.
ततो विरहितं दृष्ट्वा पितरं प्रतिपूज्य सः ।
पौरानुरागसंतप्तः पश्चादिदमभाषत ॥११॥
11. tato virahitaṁ dṛṣṭvā pitaraṁ pratipūjya saḥ ,
paurānurāgasaṁtaptaḥ paścādidamabhāṣata.
11. tataḥ virahitam dṛṣṭvā pitaram pratipūjya
saḥ paurānurāgasaṁtaptaḥ paścāt idam abhāṣata
11. Then, having seen his father alone and respectfully honored him, Duryodhana, tormented by the citizens' devotion to the Pandavas, spoke the following words.
श्रुता मे जल्पतां तात पौराणामशिवा गिरः ।
त्वामनादृत्य भीष्मं च पतिमिच्छन्ति पाण्डवम् ॥१२॥
12. śrutā me jalpatāṁ tāta paurāṇāmaśivā giraḥ ,
tvāmanādṛtya bhīṣmaṁ ca patimicchanti pāṇḍavam.
12. śrutā me jalpatām tāta paurāṇām aśivāḥ giraḥ
tvām anādṛtya bhīṣmam ca patim icchanti pāṇḍavam
12. Father, I have heard the inauspicious words of the chattering citizens. Disregarding both you and Bhishma, they desire a Pandava as their ruler.
मतमेतच्च भीष्मस्य न स राज्यं बुभूषति ।
अस्माकं तु परां पीडां चिकीर्षन्ति पुरे जनाः ॥१३॥
13. matametacca bhīṣmasya na sa rājyaṁ bubhūṣati ,
asmākaṁ tu parāṁ pīḍāṁ cikīrṣanti pure janāḥ.
13. matam etac ca bhīṣmasya na saḥ rājyam bubhūṣati
asmākam tu parām pīḍām cikīrṣanti pure janāḥ
13. This is also Bhishma's view: he does not desire the kingdom. However, the people in the city intend to inflict great suffering upon us.
पितृतः प्राप्तवान्राज्यं पाण्डुरात्मगुणैः पुरा ।
त्वमप्यगुणसंयोगात्प्राप्तं राज्यं न लब्धवान् ॥१४॥
14. pitṛtaḥ prāptavānrājyaṁ pāṇḍurātmaguṇaiḥ purā ,
tvamapyaguṇasaṁyogātprāptaṁ rājyaṁ na labdhavān.
14. pitṛtaḥ prāptavān rājyam pāṇḍuḥ ātmaguṇaiḥ purā
tvam api aguṇasaṃyogāt prāptam rājyam na labdhavān
14. Formerly, Pandu inherited the kingdom from his father by virtue of his own intrinsic qualities (ātmaguṇa). However, you, due to your lack of good qualities, did not obtain the kingdom that was rightfully yours.
स एष पाण्डोर्दायाद्यं यदि प्राप्नोति पाण्डवः ।
तस्य पुत्रो ध्रुवं प्राप्तस्तस्य तस्येति चापरः ॥१५॥
15. sa eṣa pāṇḍordāyādyaṁ yadi prāpnoti pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tasya putro dhruvaṁ prāptastasya tasyeti cāparaḥ.
15. saḥ eṣaḥ pāṇḍoḥ dāyādyam yadi prāpnoti pāṇḍavaḥ tasya
putraḥ dhruvam prāptaḥ tasya tasya iti ca aparaḥ
15. If this Pandava (Yudhishthira) obtains Pandu's inheritance, then his son will certainly receive it, and then that son's son, and so forth.
ते वयं राजवंशेन हीनाः सह सुतैरपि ।
अवज्ञाता भविष्यामो लोकस्य जगतीपते ॥१६॥
16. te vayaṁ rājavaṁśena hīnāḥ saha sutairapi ,
avajñātā bhaviṣyāmo lokasya jagatīpate.
16. te vayam rājavaṃśena hīnāḥ saha sutaiḥ api
avajñātāḥ bhaviṣyāmaḥ lokasya jagatīpate
16. O lord of the earth, we, along with our sons, will then be deprived of our royal lineage and become scorned by the people.
सततं निरयं प्राप्ताः परपिण्डोपजीविनः ।
न भवेम यथा राजंस्तथा शीघ्रं विधीयताम् ॥१७॥
17. satataṁ nirayaṁ prāptāḥ parapiṇḍopajīvinaḥ ,
na bhavema yathā rājaṁstathā śīghraṁ vidhīyatām.
17. satatam nirayam prāptāḥ parapiṇḍopajīvinaḥ na
bhavema yathā rājan tathā śīghram vidhīyatām
17. O King, let arrangements be made swiftly so that we do not become perpetually consigned to hell, living off the charity of others.
अभविष्यः स्थिरो राज्ये यदि हि त्वं पुरा नृप ।
ध्रुवं प्राप्स्याम च वयं राज्यमप्यवशे जने ॥१८॥
18. abhaviṣyaḥ sthiro rājye yadi hi tvaṁ purā nṛpa ,
dhruvaṁ prāpsyāma ca vayaṁ rājyamapyavaśe jane.
18. abhviṣyaḥ sthiraḥ rājye yadi hi tvam purā nṛpa
dhruvam prāpsyāma ca vayam rājyam api avaśe jane
18. O King, if you had indeed been stable in your kingdom previously, then we, the helpless subjects, would certainly have also obtained a kingdom.
