वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततस्तं निश्चितात्मानं युद्धाय यदुनन्दनः ।
उवाच वाग्मी राजानं जरासंधमधोक्षजः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatastaṁ niścitātmānaṁ yuddhāya yadunandanaḥ ,
uvāca vāgmī rājānaṁ jarāsaṁdhamadhokṣajaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the eloquent Krishna (yadunandana), Adhokṣaja, addressed King Jarasandha, who was resolute in his mind (ātman) for battle.
त्रयाणां केन ते राजन्योद्धुं वितरते मनः ।
अस्मदन्यतमेनेह सज्जीभवतु को युधि ॥२॥
2. trayāṇāṁ kena te rājanyoddhuṁ vitarate manaḥ ,
asmadanyatameneha sajjībhavatu ko yudhi.
2. trayāṇām kena te rājan yoddhum vitarate manaḥ
asmat anyatamena iha sajjībhavatu kaḥ yudhi
2. O King, among the three of us, with whom does your mind incline to fight? Let that one among us be ready for battle here.
एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन युद्धं वव्रे महाद्युतिः ।
जरासंधस्ततो राजन्भीमसेनेन मागधः ॥३॥
3. evamuktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena yuddhaṁ vavre mahādyutiḥ ,
jarāsaṁdhastato rājanbhīmasenena māgadhaḥ.
3. evam uktaḥ saḥ kṛṣṇena yuddham vavre mahādyutiḥ
jarāsaṃdhaḥ tataḥ rājan bhīmasenena māgadhaḥ
3. O King, thus addressed by Krishna, the greatly radiant Jarasandha, the king of Magadha, then chose battle with Bhimasena.
धारयन्नगदान्मुख्यान्निर्वृतीर्वेदनानि च ।
उपतस्थे जरासंधं युयुत्सुं वै पुरोहितः ॥४॥
4. dhārayannagadānmukhyānnirvṛtīrvedanāni ca ,
upatasthe jarāsaṁdhaṁ yuyutsuṁ vai purohitaḥ.
4. dhārayan agadan mukhyān nirvṛtīḥ vedanāni ca
upatasthe jarāsaṃdham yuyutsuṃ vai purohitaḥ
4. The priest, carrying important medicines (agada) and healing remedies (nirvṛti), indeed approached Jarasandha, who was eager for battle.
कृतस्वस्त्ययनो विद्वान्ब्राह्मणेन यशस्विना ।
समनह्यज्जरासंधः क्षत्रधर्ममनुव्रतः ॥५॥
5. kṛtasvastyayano vidvānbrāhmaṇena yaśasvinā ,
samanahyajjarāsaṁdhaḥ kṣatradharmamanuvrataḥ.
5. kṛtasvastyayanaḥ vidvān brāhmaṇena yaśasvinā
samanahyat jarāsandhaḥ kṣatradharmamanuvrataḥ
5. After a renowned and learned brahmin had performed the propitiatory rites for him, Jarāsandha, who adhered to the code of conduct for warriors (kṣatra-dharma), prepared himself for battle.
अवमुच्य किरीटं स केशान्समनुमृज्य च ।
उदतिष्ठज्जरासंधो वेलातिग इवार्णवः ॥६॥
6. avamucya kirīṭaṁ sa keśānsamanumṛjya ca ,
udatiṣṭhajjarāsaṁdho velātiga ivārṇavaḥ.
6. avamucya kirīṭam sa keśān samanumṛjya ca
udatiṣṭhat jarāsandhaḥ velātigaḥ iva arṇavaḥ
6. He (Jarāsandha), taking off his crown and smoothing his hair, stood up like an ocean overflowing its bounds.
उवाच मतिमान्राजा भीमं भीमपराक्रमम् ।
भीम योत्स्ये त्वया सार्धं श्रेयसा निर्जितं वरम् ॥७॥
7. uvāca matimānrājā bhīmaṁ bhīmaparākramam ,
bhīma yotsye tvayā sārdhaṁ śreyasā nirjitaṁ varam.
7. uvāca matimān rājā bhīmam bhīmaparākramam bhīma
yotsye tvayā sārdham śreyasā nirjitam varam
7. The wise king (Jarāsandha) addressed Bhīma, who possessed formidable valor: 'O Bhīma, I will fight with you. Indeed, the excellent (among warriors) should be defeated by a superior one.'
एवमुक्त्वा जरासंधो भीमसेनमरिंदमः ।
प्रत्युद्ययौ महातेजाः शक्रं बलिरिवासुरः ॥८॥
8. evamuktvā jarāsaṁdho bhīmasenamariṁdamaḥ ,
pratyudyayau mahātejāḥ śakraṁ balirivāsuraḥ.
8. evam uktvā jarāsandhaḥ bhīmasenam arindamaḥ
pratyudyayau mahātejāḥ śakram baliḥ iva asuraḥ
8. Having spoken thus, Jarāsandha, the subduer of enemies and a man of great energy, advanced against Bhīmasena, just as the demon (asura) Bali advanced against Śakra (Indra).
ततः संमन्त्र्य कृष्णेन कृतस्वस्त्ययनो बली ।
भीमसेनो जरासंधमाससाद युयुत्सया ॥९॥
9. tataḥ saṁmantrya kṛṣṇena kṛtasvastyayano balī ,
bhīmaseno jarāsaṁdhamāsasāda yuyutsayā.
9. tataḥ saṃmantrya kṛṣṇena kṛtasvastyayanaḥ
balī bhīmasenaḥ jarāsaṃdham āsasāda yuyutsayā
9. Then, having consulted with Kṛṣṇa and having performed the propitiatory rites (svastyayana), the mighty Bhīmasena approached Jarāsaṃdha with the desire to fight.
ततस्तौ नरशार्दूलौ बाहुशस्त्रौ समीयतुः ।
वीरौ परमसंहृष्टावन्योन्यजयकाङ्क्षिणौ ॥१०॥
10. tatastau naraśārdūlau bāhuśastrau samīyatuḥ ,
vīrau paramasaṁhṛṣṭāvanyonyajayakāṅkṣiṇau.
10. tataḥ tau naraśārdūlau bāhuśastrau samīyatuḥ
vīrau paramasaṃhṛṣṭau anyonyajayakāṅkṣiṇau
10. Then those two tiger-like men, whose weapons were their arms, approached each other. They were heroes, extremely delighted, and desirous of conquering one another.
तयोरथ भुजाघातान्निग्रहप्रग्रहात्तथा ।
आसीत्सुभीमसंह्रादो वज्रपर्वतयोरिव ॥११॥
11. tayoratha bhujāghātānnigrahapragrahāttathā ,
āsītsubhīmasaṁhrādo vajraparvatayoriva.
11. tayoḥ atha bhujāghātāt nigrahapragrahāt tathā
āsīt subhīmasaṃhrādaḥ vajraparvatayoḥ iva
11. Then, from the blows of their arms and similarly from their grasping and releasing, there arose a terribly fierce roar, like that of crashing thunderbolts and mountains.
उभौ परमसंहृष्टौ बलेनातिबलावुभौ ।
अन्योन्यस्यान्तरं प्रेप्सू परस्परजयैषिणौ ॥१२॥
12. ubhau paramasaṁhṛṣṭau balenātibalāvubhau ,
anyonyasyāntaraṁ prepsū parasparajayaiṣiṇau.
12. ubhau paramasaṃhṛṣṭau balena atibalau ubhau
anyonyasya antaram prepsū parasparajayaiṣiṇau
12. Both were extremely delighted and both were exceedingly powerful due to their strength. They were both seeking an opening in each other, and both desired mutual victory.
तद्भीममुत्सार्य जनं युद्धमासीदुपह्वरे ।
बलिनोः संयुगे राजन्वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥१३॥
13. tadbhīmamutsārya janaṁ yuddhamāsīdupahvare ,
balinoḥ saṁyuge rājanvṛtravāsavayoriva.
13. tat bhīmam utsārya janam yuddham āsīt upahvare
balinoḥ saṃyuge rājan vṛtravāsavayoḥ iva
13. O King, having driven away that terrified crowd, the battle ensued in close quarters, just like the combat between the powerful Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra).
प्रकर्षणाकर्षणाभ्यामभ्याकर्षविकर्षणैः ।
आकर्षेतां तथान्योन्यं जानुभिश्चाभिजघ्नतुः ॥१४॥
14. prakarṣaṇākarṣaṇābhyāmabhyākarṣavikarṣaṇaiḥ ,
ākarṣetāṁ tathānyonyaṁ jānubhiścābhijaghnatuḥ.
14. prakarṣaṇākarṣaṇābhyām abhyākarṣavikarṣaṇaiḥ
ākarṣetām tathā anyonyam jānubhiḥ ca abhijaghnatuḥ
14. Through repeated pulling and drawing, and through dragging and pushing apart, they pulled each other back and forth, and they also struck each other with their knees.
ततः शब्देन महता भर्त्सयन्तौ परस्परम् ।
पाषाणसंघातनिभैः प्रहारैरभिजघ्नतुः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ śabdena mahatā bhartsayantau parasparam ,
pāṣāṇasaṁghātanibhaiḥ prahārairabhijaghnatuḥ.
15. tataḥ śabdena mahatā bhartsayantau parasparam
pāṣāṇasaṃghātanibhaiḥ prahāraiḥ abhijaghnatuḥ
15. Then, threatening each other with a great roar, they struck each other with blows that resembled masses of rock.
व्यूढोरस्कौ दीर्घभुजौ नियुद्धकुशलावुभौ ।
बाहुभिः समसज्जेतामायसैः परिघैरिव ॥१६॥
16. vyūḍhoraskau dīrghabhujau niyuddhakuśalāvubhau ,
bāhubhiḥ samasajjetāmāyasaiḥ parighairiva.
16. vyūḍhoraskau dīrghabhujau niyuddhakuśalau ubhau
bāhubhiḥ samasajjetām āyasaiḥ parighaiḥ iva
16. Both of them, having broad chests, long arms, and being skilled in wrestling, engaged each other with their arms as if with iron maces.
कार्त्तिकस्य तु मासस्य प्रवृत्तं प्रथमेऽहनि ।
अनारतं दिवारात्रमविश्रान्तमवर्तत ॥१७॥
17. kārttikasya tu māsasya pravṛttaṁ prathame'hani ,
anārataṁ divārātramaviśrāntamavartata.
17. kārttikasya tu māsasya pravṛttam prathame
ahani anāratam divārātram aviśrāntam avartata
17. It commenced on the first day of the month of Kārttika and continued incessantly, day and night, without rest.
तद्वृत्तं तु त्रयोदश्यां समवेतं महात्मनोः ।
चतुर्दश्यां निशायां तु निवृत्तो मागधः क्लमात् ॥१८॥
18. tadvṛttaṁ tu trayodaśyāṁ samavetaṁ mahātmanoḥ ,
caturdaśyāṁ niśāyāṁ tu nivṛtto māgadhaḥ klamāt.
18. tat vṛttam tu trayodaśyām samavetam mahātmanoḥ
caturdaśyām niśāyām tu nivṛttaḥ māgadhaḥ klamāt
18. That encounter of the two great souls occurred on the thirteenth day. But on the fourteenth night, the king of Magadha (Jarāsandha) withdrew due to exhaustion.
तं राजानं तथा क्लान्तं दृष्ट्वा राजञ्जनार्दनः ।
उवाच भीमकर्माणं भीमं संबोधयन्निव ॥१९॥
19. taṁ rājānaṁ tathā klāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā rājañjanārdanaḥ ,
uvāca bhīmakarmāṇaṁ bhīmaṁ saṁbodhayanniva.
19. tam rājānam tathā klāntam dṛṣṭvā rājan janārdanaḥ
uvāca bhīmakarmāṇam bhīmam saṃbodhayan iva
19. O king (Yudhiṣṭhira), Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), seeing that king (Jarāsandha) so exhausted, spoke to Bhīma, the one of formidable deeds, as if offering counsel.
क्लान्तः शत्रुर्न कौन्तेय लभ्यः पीडयितुं रणे ।
पीड्यमानो हि कार्त्स्न्येन जह्याज्जीवितमात्मनः ॥२०॥
20. klāntaḥ śatrurna kaunteya labhyaḥ pīḍayituṁ raṇe ,
pīḍyamāno hi kārtsnyena jahyājjīvitamātmanaḥ.
20. klāntaḥ śatruḥ na kaunteya labhyaḥ pīḍayitum raṇe
pīḍyamānaḥ hi kārtsnyena jahyāt jīvitam ātmanaḥ
20. O son of Kuntī (Bhīma), an exhausted enemy should not be oppressed in battle. For if one is completely tormented, he would indeed give up his own life (ātman).
तस्मात्ते नैव कौन्तेय पीडनीयो नराधिपः ।
सममेतेन युध्यस्व बाहुभ्यां भरतर्षभ ॥२१॥
21. tasmātte naiva kaunteya pīḍanīyo narādhipaḥ ,
samametena yudhyasva bāhubhyāṁ bharatarṣabha.
21. tasmāt te na eva kaunteya pīḍanīyaḥ narādhipaḥ
samam etena yudhyasva bāhubhyām bharatarṣabha
21. Therefore, O son of Kunti (Kaunteya), that king should certainly not be harassed by you. O best of Bharatas (Bharatarṣabha), fight equally with him using your arms.
एवमुक्तः स कृष्णेन पाण्डवः परवीरहा ।
जरासंधस्य तद्रन्ध्रं ज्ञात्वा चक्रे मतिं वधे ॥२२॥
22. evamuktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā ,
jarāsaṁdhasya tadrandhraṁ jñātvā cakre matiṁ vadhe.
22. evam uktaḥ sa kṛṣṇena pāṇḍavaḥ paravīrahā
jarāsandhasya tat randhram jñātvā cakre matim vadhe
22. Thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa, that Pāṇḍava, the slayer of enemy heroes, understanding Jarāsandha's weakness, resolved to kill him.
ततस्तमजितं जेतुं जरासंधं वृकोदरः ।
संरभ्य बलिनां मुख्यो जग्राह कुरुनन्दनः ॥२३॥
23. tatastamajitaṁ jetuṁ jarāsaṁdhaṁ vṛkodaraḥ ,
saṁrabhya balināṁ mukhyo jagrāha kurunandanaḥ.
23. tataḥ tam ajitam jetum jarāsandham vṛkodaraḥ
saṃrabhya balinām mukhyaḥ jagrāha kurunandanaḥ
23. Then, to conquer that invincible Jarāsandha, Vṛkodara, the chief among the strong and the delight of the Kurus (kurunandanaḥ), became enraged and seized him.
