संजय उवाच ।
उलूकस्त्वर्जुनं भूयो यथोक्तं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
आशीविषमिव क्रुद्धं तुदन्वाक्यशलाकया ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ulūkastvarjunaṁ bhūyo yathoktaṁ vākyamabravīt ,
āśīviṣamiva kruddhaṁ tudanvākyaśalākayā.
1. sañjaya uvāca ulūkaḥ tu arjunam bhūyaḥ yathā uktam vākyam
abravīt āśīviṣam iva kruddham tudan vākya-śalākayā
1. sañjaya uvāca: ulūkaḥ tu bhūyaḥ yathā uktam vākyam arjunam abravīt,
kruddham āśīviṣam iva vākya-śalākayā tudan.
1. Sañjaya said: But Ulūka again spoke the very words previously uttered to Arjuna, tormenting him as if with a verbal dart, like an enraged venomous snake.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा रुषिताः पाण्डवा भृशम् ।
प्रागेव भृशसंक्रुद्धाः कैतव्येन प्रधर्षिताः ॥२॥
2. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā ruṣitāḥ pāṇḍavā bhṛśam ,
prāgeva bhṛśasaṁkruddhāḥ kaitavyena pradharṣitāḥ.
2. tasya tad vacanam śrutvā ruṣitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ bhṛśam
prāk eva bhṛśa-saṃkruddhāḥ kaitavyena pradharṣitāḥ
2. pāṇḍavāḥ tasya tad vacanam śrutvā kaitavyena
pradharṣitāḥ prāk eva bhṛśa-saṃkruddhāḥ bhṛśam ruṣitāḥ
2. Hearing his words, the Pāṇḍavas, who were already intensely enraged and humiliated by deceit, became exceedingly furious.
नासनेष्ववतिष्ठन्त बाहूंश्चैव विचिक्षिपुः ।
आशीविषा इव क्रुद्धा वीक्षां चक्रुः परस्परम् ॥३॥
3. nāsaneṣvavatiṣṭhanta bāhūṁścaiva vicikṣipuḥ ,
āśīviṣā iva kruddhā vīkṣāṁ cakruḥ parasparam.
3. na āsaneṣu avatiṣṭhanta bāhūn ca eva vicikṣipuḥ
āśīviṣāḥ iva kruddhāḥ vīkṣām cakruḥ parasparam
3. āsaneṣu na avatiṣṭhanta,
ca bāhūn eva vicikṣipuḥ.
kruddhāḥ āśīviṣāḥ iva parasparam vīkṣām cakruḥ.
3. They did not remain in their seats, but flung their arms about. Like enraged venomous snakes, they glared at each other.
अवाक्शिरा भीमसेनः समुदैक्षत केशवम् ।
नेत्राभ्यां लोहितान्ताभ्यामाशीविष इव श्वसन् ॥४॥
4. avākśirā bhīmasenaḥ samudaikṣata keśavam ,
netrābhyāṁ lohitāntābhyāmāśīviṣa iva śvasan.
4. avāk-śirāḥ bhīmasenaḥ sam-ud-aikṣata keśavam
netrābhyām lohita-antābhyām āśīviṣaḥ iva śvasan
4. avāk-śirāḥ bhīmasenaḥ netrābhyām lohita-antābhyām āśīviṣaḥ iva śvasan keśavam sam-ud-aikṣata.
4. Bhīmasena, with his head bowed, looked up at Keśava (Kṛṣṇa). His eyes were red at the corners, and he was hissing like a venomous snake.
आर्तं वातात्मजं दृष्ट्वा क्रोधेनाभिहतं भृशम् ।
उत्स्मयन्निव दाशार्हः कैतव्यं प्रत्यभाषत ॥५॥
5. ārtaṁ vātātmajaṁ dṛṣṭvā krodhenābhihataṁ bhṛśam ,
utsmayanniva dāśārhaḥ kaitavyaṁ pratyabhāṣata.
5. ārtam vātātmajam dṛṣṭvā krodhena abhihatam bhṛśam
ut-smayan iva dāśārhaḥ kaitavyam prati-abhāṣata
5. dāśārhaḥ krodhena bhṛśam abhihatam ārtam वातात्मजम् दृष्ट्वा,
उत्स्मयन् इव,
कैतव्यम् प्रत्यभाषत।
5. Seeing Vātātmaja (Bhīma) greatly distressed and overwhelmed by anger, Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa), as if smiling subtly, spoke in reply concerning the deceit.
प्रयाहि शीघ्रं कैतव्य ब्रूयाश्चैव सुयोधनम् ।
श्रुतं वाक्यं गृहीतोऽर्थो मतं यत्ते तथास्तु तत् ॥६॥
6. prayāhi śīghraṁ kaitavya brūyāścaiva suyodhanam ,
śrutaṁ vākyaṁ gṛhīto'rtho mataṁ yatte tathāstu tat.
6. prayāhi śīghram kaitavya brūyāḥ ca eva suyodhanam śrutam
vākyam gṛhītaḥ arthaḥ matam yat te tathā astu tat
6. kaitavya śīghram prayāhi ca eva suyodhanam brūyāḥ vākyam
śrutam arthaḥ gṛhītaḥ yat te matam tat tathā astu
6. Go quickly, O deceitful one, and tell Suyodhana (Duryodhana): "The words have been heard, the meaning grasped. Whatever is your intention, let it be so."
मद्वचश्चापि भूयस्ते वक्तव्यः स सुयोधनः ।
श्व इदानीं प्रदृश्येथाः पुरुषो भव दुर्मते ॥७॥
7. madvacaścāpi bhūyaste vaktavyaḥ sa suyodhanaḥ ,
śva idānīṁ pradṛśyethāḥ puruṣo bhava durmate.
7. mat-vacaḥ ca api bhūyaḥ te vaktavyaḥ saḥ suyodhanaḥ
śvaḥ idānīm pradṛśyethāḥ puruṣaḥ bhava durmate
7. ca api bhūyaḥ te mat-vacaḥ saḥ suyodhanaḥ vaktavyaḥ
durmate śvaḥ idānīm pradṛśyethāḥ puruṣaḥ bhava
7. And further, that Suyodhana (Duryodhana) should be told my words by you. Now, tomorrow, you should appear. Be a man (puruṣa), O evil-minded one!
मन्यसे यच्च मूढ त्वं न योत्स्यति जनार्दनः ।
सारथ्येन वृतः पार्थैरिति त्वं न बिभेषि च ॥८॥
8. manyase yacca mūḍha tvaṁ na yotsyati janārdanaḥ ,
sārathyena vṛtaḥ pārthairiti tvaṁ na bibheṣi ca.
8. manyase yat ca mūḍha tvam na yotsyati janārdanaḥ
sārathyena vṛtaḥ pārthaiḥ iti tvam na bibheṣi ca
8. mūḍha tvam yat ca manyase janārdanaḥ na yotsyati iti,
pārthaiḥ sārathyena vṛtaḥ (saḥ),
ca tvam na bibheṣi
8. And what you foolishly think, "Janārdana will not fight, for he was chosen for charioteering by the Pārthas (sons of Pṛthā)", for this reason, you also do not fear.
जघन्यकालमप्येतद्भवेद्यत्सर्वपार्थिवान् ।
निर्दहेयमहं क्रोधात्तृणानीव हुताशनः ॥९॥
9. jaghanyakālamapyetadbhavedyatsarvapārthivān ,
nirdaheyamahaṁ krodhāttṛṇānīva hutāśanaḥ.
9. jaghanya-kālam api etat bhavet yat sarva-pārthivān
nirdaheyam aham krodhāt tṛṇāni iva hutāśanaḥ
9. api etat jaghanya-kālam bhavet yat aham krodhāt
hutāśanaḥ tṛṇāni iva sarva-pārthivān nirdaheyam
9. Even if this were the worst of times, I would burn down all the kings out of anger, just as fire (hutāśana) burns grass.
युधिष्ठिरनियोगात्तु फल्गुनस्य महात्मनः ।
करिष्ये युध्यमानस्य सारथ्यं विदितात्मनः ॥१०॥
10. yudhiṣṭhiraniyogāttu phalgunasya mahātmanaḥ ,
kariṣye yudhyamānasya sārathyaṁ viditātmanaḥ.
10. yudhiṣṭhiranīyogāt tu phālgunasya mahātmanaḥ
kariṣye yudhyamānasya sāratyaṃ viditātmanaḥ
10. yudhiṣṭhiranīyogāt tu mahātmanaḥ viditātmanaḥ
yudhyamānasya phālgunasya sāratyaṃ kariṣye
10. Indeed, by the command of Yudhiṣṭhira, I will act as charioteer for the great-souled Arjuna (Phalguna), who is fighting and knows his true self (ātman).
यद्युत्पतसि लोकांस्त्रीन्यद्याविशसि भूतलम् ।
तत्र तत्रार्जुनरथं प्रभाते द्रक्ष्यसेऽग्रतः ॥११॥
11. yadyutpatasi lokāṁstrīnyadyāviśasi bhūtalam ,
tatra tatrārjunarathaṁ prabhāte drakṣyase'grataḥ.
11. yat yadi utpatasi lokān trīn yat yadi āviśasi bhūtalam
tatra tatra arjūnaratham prabhāte drakṣyase agrataḥ
11. yat yadi lokān trīn utpatasi,
yat yadi bhūtalam āviśasi,
tatra tatra prabhāte arjūnaratham agrataḥ drakṣyase
11. Even if you ascend to the three worlds, or descend into the depths of the earth, you will still see Arjuna's chariot before you by morning.
यच्चापि भीमसेनस्य मन्यसे मोघगर्जितम् ।
दुःशासनस्य रुधिरं पीतमित्यवधार्यताम् ॥१२॥
12. yaccāpi bhīmasenasya manyase moghagarjitam ,
duḥśāsanasya rudhiraṁ pītamityavadhāryatām.
12. yat ca api bhīmasenasya manyase moghagarjitam
duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pītam iti avadhāryatām
12. yat ca api bhīmasenasya moghagarjitam manyase,
(tat) duḥśāsanasya rudhiram pītam iti avadhāryatām
12. And as for what you consider Bhīmasena's roar to be in vain, know that Duḥśāsana's blood has been drunk.
न त्वां समीक्षते पार्थो नापि राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
न भीमसेनो न यमौ प्रतिकूलप्रभाषिणम् ॥१३॥
13. na tvāṁ samīkṣate pārtho nāpi rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
na bhīmaseno na yamau pratikūlaprabhāṣiṇam.
13. na tvām samīkṣate pārthaḥ na api rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
na bhīmasenaḥ na yamau pratikūlaprabhāṣiṇam
13. pārthaḥ tvām pratikūlaprabhāṣiṇam na samīkṣate,
rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ api na,
bhīmasenaḥ na,
yamau na (samīkṣete)
13. Neither Arjuna, nor King Yudhiṣṭhira, nor Bhīmasena, nor the twins (Nakula and Sahadeva) will look at you, who speak hostile words.
