शल्य उवाच ।
अथ संचिन्तयानस्य देवराजस्य धीमतः ।
नहुषस्य वधोपायं लोकपालैः सहैव तैः ।
तपस्वी तत्र भगवानगस्त्यः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥१॥
1. śalya uvāca ,
atha saṁcintayānasya devarājasya dhīmataḥ ,
nahuṣasya vadhopāyaṁ lokapālaiḥ sahaiva taiḥ ,
tapasvī tatra bhagavānagastyaḥ pratyadṛśyata.

1. Śalya said: Then, while the wise king of gods (Indra) was intently pondering with those guardians of the worlds (lokapālās) on a way to kill Nahuṣa, the venerable ascetic Agastya appeared there.
सोऽब्रवीदर्च्य देवेन्द्रं दिष्ट्या वै वर्धते भवान् ।
विश्वरूपविनाशेन वृत्रासुरवधेन च ॥२॥
2. so'bravīdarcya devendraṁ diṣṭyā vai vardhate bhavān ,
viśvarūpavināśena vṛtrāsuravadhena ca.
2. saḥ abravīt arcya devendraṃ diṣṭyā vai vardhate
bhavān | viśvarūpavināśena vṛtrāsuravadhena ca
2. He (Agastya) said, after revering Indra, "Fortunately, you are prospering, indeed, due to the destruction of Viśvarūpa and the slaying of Vṛtrāsura."
दिष्ट्या च नहुषो भ्रष्टो देवराज्यात्पुरंदर ।
दिष्ट्या हतारिं पश्यामि भवन्तं बलसूदन ॥३॥
3. diṣṭyā ca nahuṣo bhraṣṭo devarājyātpuraṁdara ,
diṣṭyā hatāriṁ paśyāmi bhavantaṁ balasūdana.
3. diṣṭyā ca nahuṣaḥ bhraṣṭaḥ devarājyāt puraṃdara
| diṣṭyā hatāriṃ paśyāmi bhavantaṃ balasūdana
3. "And fortunately, Nahuṣa has been removed from the kingship of the gods, O Purandara. Fortunately, I see you, O slayer of Bala (Balasūdana), with your enemies slain."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
स्वागतं ते महर्षेऽस्तु प्रीतोऽहं दर्शनात्तव ।
पाद्यमाचमनीयं च गामर्घ्यं च प्रतीच्छ मे ॥४॥
4. indra uvāca ,
svāgataṁ te maharṣe'stu prīto'haṁ darśanāttava ,
pādyamācamanīyaṁ ca gāmarghyaṁ ca pratīccha me.
4. indraḥ uvāca | svāgataṃ te maharṣe astu prītaḥ ahaṃ darśanāt
tava | pādyaṃ ācamanīyaṃ ca gām arghyaṃ ca pratīccha me
4. Indra said: "Welcome to you, O great sage! I am pleased by your sight. Please accept from me water for washing the feet, water for sipping (ācamanīya), a cow, and an offering (arghya)."
शल्य उवाच ।
पूजितं चोपविष्टं तमासने मुनिसत्तमम् ।
पर्यपृच्छत देवेशः प्रहृष्टो ब्राह्मणर्षभम् ॥५॥
5. śalya uvāca ,
pūjitaṁ copaviṣṭaṁ tamāsane munisattamam ,
paryapṛcchata deveśaḥ prahṛṣṭo brāhmaṇarṣabham.
5. śalyaḥ uvāca pūjitam ca upaviṣṭam tam āsane munisattamam
paryapṛcchat deveśaḥ prahṛṣṭaḥ brāhmaṇarṣabham
5. Śalya said: The lord of the gods, greatly pleased, questioned the chief among Brahmins, the best among sages, who was honored and seated on a seat.
एतदिच्छामि भगवन्कथ्यमानं द्विजोत्तम ।
परिभ्रष्टः कथं स्वर्गान्नहुषः पापनिश्चयः ॥६॥
6. etadicchāmi bhagavankathyamānaṁ dvijottama ,
paribhraṣṭaḥ kathaṁ svargānnahuṣaḥ pāpaniścayaḥ.
6. etat icchāmi bhagavan kathyāmanam dvijottama
paribhraṣṭaḥ katham svargāt nahuṣaḥ pāpaniścayaḥ
6. O venerable one, best among Brahmins, I wish for this to be narrated: how Nahuṣa, whose resolve was sinful, fell from heaven.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
शृणु शक्र प्रियं वाक्यं यथा राजा दुरात्मवान् ।
स्वर्गाद्भ्रष्टो दुराचारो नहुषो बलदर्पितः ॥७॥
7. agastya uvāca ,
śṛṇu śakra priyaṁ vākyaṁ yathā rājā durātmavān ,
svargādbhraṣṭo durācāro nahuṣo baladarpitaḥ.
7. agastyaḥ uvāca śṛṇu śakra priyam vākyam yathā rājā
durātmavān svargāt bhraṣṭaḥ durācāraḥ nahuṣaḥ baladarpitaḥ
7. Agastya said: "Listen, O Indra (Śakra), to this important account: how King Nahuṣa, possessing an evil mind (ātman), proud of his strength, and of wicked conduct, fell from heaven."
श्रमार्तास्तु वहन्तस्तं नहुषं पापकारिणम् ।
देवर्षयो महाभागास्तथा ब्रह्मर्षयोऽमलाः ।
पप्रच्छुः संशयं देव नहुषं जयतां वर ॥८॥
8. śramārtāstu vahantastaṁ nahuṣaṁ pāpakāriṇam ,
devarṣayo mahābhāgāstathā brahmarṣayo'malāḥ ,
papracchuḥ saṁśayaṁ deva nahuṣaṁ jayatāṁ vara.
8. śramārtāḥ tu vahantaḥ tam nahuṣam
pāpakāriṇam devarṣayaḥ mahābhāgāḥ
tathā brahmarṣayaḥ amalāḥ papracchuḥ
saṃśayam deva nahuṣam jayatām vara
8. However, the highly revered divine sages and the pure brahmin sages, who were tormented by fatigue while carrying that sinful Nahuṣa, questioned him. O lord (deva), O best among conquerors!
य इमे ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ता मन्त्रा वै प्रोक्षणे गवाम् ।
एते प्रमाणं भवत उताहो नेति वासव ।
नहुषो नेति तानाह तमसा मूढचेतनः ॥९॥
9. ya ime brahmaṇā proktā mantrā vai prokṣaṇe gavām ,
ete pramāṇaṁ bhavata utāho neti vāsava ,
nahuṣo neti tānāha tamasā mūḍhacetanaḥ.
9. ye ime brahmaṇā proktāḥ mantrāḥ vai
prokṣaṇe gavām ete pramāṇam bhavata
uta āho na iti vāsava nahuṣaḥ
na iti tān āha tamasā mūḍhacetanaḥ
9. O Vāsava (Indra), do you all consider these mantras, which were indeed declared by Brahmā for the consecration of cows, to be an authority (pramāṇa), or not? Nahusha, whose consciousness was deluded by ignorance (tamas), replied to them, 'No'.
ऋषय ऊचुः ।
अधर्मे संप्रवृत्तस्त्वं धर्मं न प्रतिपद्यसे ।
प्रमाणमेतदस्माकं पूर्वं प्रोक्तं महर्षिभिः ॥१०॥
10. ṛṣaya ūcuḥ ,
adharme saṁpravṛttastvaṁ dharmaṁ na pratipadyase ,
pramāṇametadasmākaṁ pūrvaṁ proktaṁ maharṣibhiḥ.
10. ṛṣayaḥ ūcuḥ adharme sampravṛttaḥ tvam dharmam na pratipadyase
pramāṇam etat asmākam pūrvam proktam maharṣibhiḥ
10. The sages said: 'You are immersed in unrighteousness (adharma) and do not recognize natural law (dharma). This is an authority (pramāṇa) for us, having been declared previously by the great sages'.
अगस्त्य उवाच ।
ततो विवदमानः स मुनिभिः सह वासव ।
अथ मामस्पृशन्मूर्ध्नि पादेनाधर्मपीडितः ॥११॥
11. agastya uvāca ,
tato vivadamānaḥ sa munibhiḥ saha vāsava ,
atha māmaspṛśanmūrdhni pādenādharmapīḍitaḥ.
11. agastyaḥ uvāca tataḥ vivadamānaḥ saḥ munibhiḥ saha
vāsava atha mām aspṛśat mūrdhni pādena adharmapīḍitaḥ
11. Agastya said: 'Then, while that Nahusha was arguing with the sages, O Vāsava (Indra), he, afflicted by unrighteousness (adharma), touched my head with his foot'.
तेनाभूद्धततेजाः स निःश्रीकश्च शचीपते ।
ततस्तमहमाविग्नमवोचं भयपीडितम् ॥१२॥
12. tenābhūddhatatejāḥ sa niḥśrīkaśca śacīpate ,
tatastamahamāvignamavocaṁ bhayapīḍitam.
12. tena abhūt hatatejāḥ saḥ niḥśrīkaḥ ca śacīpate
tataḥ tam aham āvignam avocam bhayapīḍitam
12. O husband of Shachī (Indra), by that act, his splendor was destroyed and he became devoid of prosperity. Then I (Agastya) spoke to him, who was agitated and tormented by fear.
यस्मात्पूर्वैः कृतं ब्रह्म ब्रह्मर्षिभिरनुष्ठितम् ।
अदुष्टं दूषयसि वै यच्च मूर्ध्न्यस्पृशः पदा ॥१३॥
13. yasmātpūrvaiḥ kṛtaṁ brahma brahmarṣibhiranuṣṭhitam ,
aduṣṭaṁ dūṣayasi vai yacca mūrdhnyaspṛśaḥ padā.
13. yasmāt pūrvaiḥ kṛtam brahma brahmarṣibhiḥ anuṣṭhitam
aduṣṭam dūṣayasi vai yat ca mūrdhni aspṛśaḥ padā
13. Because you defile that faultless sacred tradition (brahma) which was established by the ancients and observed by the brahmin sages, and because you touched it on the head with your foot...
यच्चापि त्वमृषीन्मूढ ब्रह्मकल्पान्दुरासदान् ।
वाहान्कृत्वा वाहयसि तेन स्वर्गाद्धतप्रभः ॥१४॥
14. yaccāpi tvamṛṣīnmūḍha brahmakalpāndurāsadān ,
vāhānkṛtvā vāhayasi tena svargāddhataprabhaḥ.
14. yat ca api tvam ṛṣīn mūḍha brahmakalpān durāsadān
vāhān kṛtvā vāhayasi tena svargāt hataprabhaḥ
14. And also, foolish one, because you treat those sages (ṛṣi), who are as exalted as Brahmā (brahmakalpa) and formidable, as your mounts and drive them, for that reason your splendor (prabha) is lost from heaven (svarga).
ध्वंस पाप परिभ्रष्टः क्षीणपुण्यो महीतलम् ।
दश वर्षसहस्राणि सर्परूपधरो महान् ।
विचरिष्यसि पूर्णेषु पुनः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि ॥१५॥
15. dhvaṁsa pāpa paribhraṣṭaḥ kṣīṇapuṇyo mahītalam ,
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi sarparūpadharo mahān ,
vicariṣyasi pūrṇeṣu punaḥ svargamavāpsyasi.
15. dhvaṃsa pāpa paribhraṣṭaḥ kṣīṇapuṇyaḥ
mahītalam daśa varṣasahasrāṇi
sarparūpadharaḥ mahān vicariṣyasi
pūrṇeṣu punaḥ svargam avāpsyasi
15. Perish, O sinful one! You will fall to the surface of the earth, your merit (puṇya) completely exhausted. For ten thousand years (varṣasahasra) you will roam, taking on the form of a great serpent. After these years are completed, you will again attain heaven (svarga).
एवं भ्रष्टो दुरात्मा स देवराज्यादरिंदम ।
दिष्ट्या वर्धामहे शक्र हतो ब्राह्मणकण्टकः ॥१६॥
16. evaṁ bhraṣṭo durātmā sa devarājyādariṁdama ,
diṣṭyā vardhāmahe śakra hato brāhmaṇakaṇṭakaḥ.
16. evam bhraṣṭaḥ durātmā sa devarājyāt ariṃdama
diṣṭyā vardhāmahe śakra hataḥ brāhmaṇakaṇṭakaḥ
16. Thus, that wicked soul (durātman) was expelled from the divine kingdom, O subduer of enemies (ariṃdama). Fortunately, O Śakra, we rejoice, for the tormentor of the brahmins has been killed.
त्रिविष्टपं प्रपद्यस्व पाहि लोकाञ्शचीपते ।
जितेन्द्रियो जितामित्रः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ॥१७॥
17. triviṣṭapaṁ prapadyasva pāhi lokāñśacīpate ,
jitendriyo jitāmitraḥ stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ.
17. triviṣṭapam prapadyasva pāhi lokān śacīpate
jitendriyaḥ jitāmitraḥ stūyamānaḥ maharṣibhiḥ
17. O lord of Śacī, enter heaven and protect the worlds! You are one who has conquered your senses (jitendriya), vanquished your enemies (jitāmitra), and are being praised by the great sages.
शल्य उवाच ।
ततो देवा भृशं तुष्टा महर्षिगणसंवृताः ।
पितरश्चैव यक्षाश्च भुजगा राक्षसास्तथा ॥१८॥
18. śalya uvāca ,
tato devā bhṛśaṁ tuṣṭā maharṣigaṇasaṁvṛtāḥ ,
pitaraścaiva yakṣāśca bhujagā rākṣasāstathā.
18. śalyaḥ uvāca tataḥ devāḥ bhṛśam tuṣṭāḥ maharṣigaṇasaṃvṛtāḥ
pitaraḥ ca eva yakṣāḥ ca bhujagāḥ rākṣasāḥ tathā
18. Śalya said: Then, the gods, exceedingly pleased and surrounded by hosts of great sages, as well as the ancestors, yakshas, serpents, and rākṣasas, [were all present].
गन्धर्वा देवकन्याश्च सर्वे चाप्सरसां गणाः ।
सरांसि सरितः शैलाः सागराश्च विशां पते ॥१९॥
19. gandharvā devakanyāśca sarve cāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ ,
sarāṁsi saritaḥ śailāḥ sāgarāśca viśāṁ pate.
19. gandharvāḥ devakanyāḥ ca sarve ca apsarasām gaṇāḥ
sarāṃsi saritaḥ śailāḥ sāgarāḥ ca viśām pate
19. The Gandharvas, and celestial maidens, and all hosts of Apsaras; as well as the lakes, rivers, mountains, and oceans, O lord of the people (viśām pate), [were also present].
उपगम्याब्रुवन्सर्वे दिष्ट्या वर्धसि शत्रुहन् ।
हतश्च नहुषः पापो दिष्ट्यागस्त्येन धीमता ।
दिष्ट्या पापसमाचारः कृतः सर्पो महीतले ॥२०॥
20. upagamyābruvansarve diṣṭyā vardhasi śatruhan ,
hataśca nahuṣaḥ pāpo diṣṭyāgastyena dhīmatā ,
diṣṭyā pāpasamācāraḥ kṛtaḥ sarpo mahītale.
20. upagamya abruvan sarve diṣṭyā vardhasi
śatruhan hataḥ ca nahuṣaḥ pāpaḥ
diṣṭyā agastyena dhīmatā diṣṭyā
pāpasamācāraḥ kṛtaḥ sarpaḥ mahītale
20. All of them, having approached, said: 'Fortunately, O slayer of enemies (śatruhan), you prosper! And fortunately, the wicked Nahuṣa was slain by the wise (dhīmat) Agastya! Fortunately, that one of sinful conduct (pāpasamācāra) has been turned into a serpent on the surface of the earth!'
