कांस्तत्र संजयापश्यः प्रत्यर्थेन समागतान् ।
ये योत्स्यन्ते पाण्डवार्थे पुत्रस्य मम वाहिनीम् ॥१॥

1. Dhritarashtra (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) said: 'O Sanjaya (Sañjaya), whom did you see there, assembled against the opposing side, who would fight for the sake of the Pandavas (Pāṇḍavas) against my son's army?'
संजय उवाच ।
मुख्यमन्धकवृष्णीनामपश्यं कृष्णमागतम् ।
चेकितानं च तत्रैव युयुधानं च सात्यकिम् ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
mukhyamandhakavṛṣṇīnāmapaśyaṁ kṛṣṇamāgatam ,
cekitānaṁ ca tatraiva yuyudhānaṁ ca sātyakim.

2. Sanjaya (Sañjaya) said: 'I saw Krishna (Kṛṣṇa), the chief among the Andhakas and Vrishnis, arrived there. I also saw Chekitana (Cekitāna) and Yuyudhana (Yuyudhāna), also known as Satyaki (Sātyaki), there.'
पृथगक्षौहिणीभ्यां तौ पाण्डवानभिसंश्रितौ ।
महारथौ समाख्यातावुभौ पुरुषमानिनौ ॥३॥
3. pṛthagakṣauhiṇībhyāṁ tau pāṇḍavānabhisaṁśritau ,
mahārathau samākhyātāvubhau puruṣamāninau.

3. Each of them (Chekitana and Yuyudhana), accompanied by an `akṣauhiṇī` army, has taken refuge with the Pandavas (Pāṇḍavas). Both are renowned as great warriors (mahārathas) and are proud of their manhood (puruṣa).
अक्षौहिण्याथ पाञ्चाल्यो दशभिस्तनयैर्वृतः ।
सत्यजित्प्रमुखैर्वीरैर्धृष्टद्युम्नपुरोगमैः ॥४॥
4. akṣauhiṇyātha pāñcālyo daśabhistanayairvṛtaḥ ,
satyajitpramukhairvīrairdhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamaiḥ.

4. Then, Drupada, the king of Pañcāla, arrived with an akṣauhiṇī (army division), accompanied by his ten heroic sons, led by Satyajit and with Dhṛṣṭadyumna at the forefront.
द्रुपदो वर्धयन्मानं शिखण्डिपरिपालितः ।
उपायात्सर्वसैन्यानां प्रतिच्छाद्य तदा वपुः ॥५॥
5. drupado vardhayanmānaṁ śikhaṇḍiparipālitaḥ ,
upāyātsarvasainyānāṁ praticchādya tadā vapuḥ.

5. Drupada, enhancing his dignity and guarded by Śikhaṇḍī, then approached, having concealed his true form, on behalf of all the armies.
विराटः सह पुत्राभ्यां शङ्खेनैवोत्तरेण च ।
सूर्यदत्तादिभिर्वीरैर्मदिराश्वपुरोगमैः ॥६॥
6. virāṭaḥ saha putrābhyāṁ śaṅkhenaivottareṇa ca ,
sūryadattādibhirvīrairmadirāśvapurogamaiḥ.

ca sūryadattādibhiḥ vīraiḥ madirāśvapurogamaiḥ
6. King Virāṭa, accompanied by his two sons, Śaṅkha and also Uttara, and by heroic warriors such as Sūryadatta and others, and with Madirāśva at their head, also came.
सहितः पृथिवीपालो भ्रातृभिस्तनयैस्तथा ।
अक्षौहिण्यैव सैन्यस्य वृतः पार्थं समाश्रितः ॥७॥
7. sahitaḥ pṛthivīpālo bhrātṛbhistanayaistathā ,
akṣauhiṇyaiva sainyasya vṛtaḥ pārthaṁ samāśritaḥ.
7. sahitaḥ pṛthivīpālaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ tanayaiḥ tathā
akṣauhiṇyā eva sainyasya vṛtaḥ pārtham samāśritaḥ
7. The king (Virāṭa), accompanied by his brothers and sons, and indeed surrounded by an entire akṣauhiṇī (army division) of troops, took refuge in Arjuna.
जारासंधिर्मागधश्च धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिराट् ।
पृथक्पृथगनुप्राप्तौ पृथगक्षौहिणीवृतौ ॥८॥
8. jārāsaṁdhirmāgadhaśca dhṛṣṭaketuśca cedirāṭ ,
pṛthakpṛthaganuprāptau pṛthagakṣauhiṇīvṛtau.
8. jārāsaṃdhiḥ māgadhaḥ ca dhṛṣṭaketuḥ ca cedirāṭ
pṛthak pṛthak anuprāptau pṛthak akṣauhiṇīvṛtau
8. Jarasandha's son, the king of Magadha, and Dhṛṣṭaketu, the king of Cedi, each arrived separately, accompanied by an akṣauhiṇī (army division).
केकया भ्रातरः पञ्च सर्वे लोहितकध्वजाः ।
अक्षौहिणीपरिवृताः पाण्डवानभिसंश्रिताः ॥९॥
9. kekayā bhrātaraḥ pañca sarve lohitakadhvajāḥ ,
akṣauhiṇīparivṛtāḥ pāṇḍavānabhisaṁśritāḥ.
9. kekayāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca sarve lohitakadhvajāḥ
akṣauhiṇīparivṛtāḥ pāṇḍavān abhisaṃśritāḥ
9. The five Kekaya brothers, all bearing red banners and accompanied by an akṣauhiṇī (army division), have allied themselves with the Pāṇḍavas.
एतानेतावतस्तत्र यानपश्यं समागतान् ।
ये पाण्डवार्थे योत्स्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रस्य वाहिनीम् ॥१०॥
10. etānetāvatastatra yānapaśyaṁ samāgatān ,
ye pāṇḍavārthe yotsyanti dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm.
10. etān etāvataḥ tatra yān apaśyam samāgatān ye
pāṇḍavārthe yotsyanti dhārtarāṣṭrasya vāhinīm
10. I saw so many of these assembled there, who will fight the army of the Dhārtarāṣṭras (Dhritarashtra's sons) for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas.
यो वेद मानुषं व्यूहं दैवं गान्धर्वमासुरम् ।
स तस्य सेनाप्रमुखे धृष्टद्युम्नो महामनाः ॥११॥
11. yo veda mānuṣaṁ vyūhaṁ daivaṁ gāndharvamāsuram ,
sa tasya senāpramukhe dhṛṣṭadyumno mahāmanāḥ.
11. yaḥ veda mānuṣam vyūham daivam gāndharvam āsuram
saḥ tasya senāpramukhe dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahāmanāḥ
11. He who knows the human, divine, Gandharva, and Asura battle formations is Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great-minded one, at the head of their army.
भीष्मः शांतनवो राजन्भागः कॢप्तः शिखण्डिनः ।
तं विराटोऽनु संयाता सह मत्स्यैः प्रहारिभिः ॥१२॥
12. bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo rājanbhāgaḥ kḷptaḥ śikhaṇḍinaḥ ,
taṁ virāṭo'nu saṁyātā saha matsyaiḥ prahāribhiḥ.
12. bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ rājan bhāgaḥ kḷptaḥ śikhaṇḍinaḥ
tam virāṭaḥ anu saṃyātā saha matsyaiḥ prahāribhiḥ
12. O King, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, is designated for Shikhandi's division. King Virata, accompanied by the Matsya warriors, will follow that (division).
ज्येष्ठस्य पाण्डुपुत्रस्य भागो मद्राधिपो बली ।
तौ तु तत्राब्रुवन्केचिद्विषमौ नो मताविति ॥१३॥
13. jyeṣṭhasya pāṇḍuputrasya bhāgo madrādhipo balī ,
tau tu tatrābruvankecidviṣamau no matāviti.
13. jyeṣṭhasya pāṇḍuputrasya bhāgaḥ madrādhipaḥ balī
tau tu tatra abruvan kecit viṣamau naḥ matau iti
13. The powerful king of Madra (Shalya) is assigned as the division for Pandu's eldest son (Yudhishthira). However, some people there remarked, 'In our opinion, these two (matchups) are unequal.'
दुर्योधनः सहसुतः सार्धं भ्रातृशतेन च ।
प्राच्याश्च दाक्षिणात्याश्च भीमसेनस्य भागतः ॥१४॥
14. duryodhanaḥ sahasutaḥ sārdhaṁ bhrātṛśatena ca ,
prācyāśca dākṣiṇātyāśca bhīmasenasya bhāgataḥ.
14. duryodhanaḥ sahasutaḥ sārdham bhrātṛśatena ca
prācyāḥ ca dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca bhīmasenasya bhāgataḥ
14. Duryodhana, accompanied by his son and his hundred brothers, along with the easterners and southerners, is designated as Bhimasena's opponent.
अर्जुनस्य तु भागेन कर्णो वैकर्तनो मतः ।
अश्वत्थामा विकर्णश्च सैन्धवश्च जयद्रथः ॥१५॥
15. arjunasya tu bhāgena karṇo vaikartano mataḥ ,
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaśca saindhavaśca jayadrathaḥ.
15. arjunasya tu bhāgena karṇaḥ vaikartanaḥ mataḥ
aśvatthāmā vikarṇaḥ ca saindhavaḥ ca jayadrathaḥ
15. But as Arjuna's opponent, Karna, the son of Vikartana (Surya), is designated. Ashwatthama, Vikarna, and Jayadratha, the king of Sindhu, are also (assigned).
अशक्याश्चैव ये केचित्पृथिव्यां शूरमानिनः ।
सर्वांस्तानर्जुनः पार्थः कल्पयामास भागतः ॥१६॥
16. aśakyāścaiva ye kecitpṛthivyāṁ śūramāninaḥ ,
sarvāṁstānarjunaḥ pārthaḥ kalpayāmāsa bhāgataḥ.
16. aśakyāḥ ca eva ye kecit pṛthivyām śūramāninaḥ
sarvān tān arjunaḥ pārthaḥ kalpayāmāsa bhāgataḥ
16. Indeed, all those on earth who considered themselves unconquerable and heroic – Arjuna, the son of Pṛthā, assigned them all as a portion (to be vanquished by others).
महेष्वासा राजपुत्रा भ्रातरः पञ्च केकयाः ।
केकयानेव भागेन कृत्वा योत्स्यन्ति संयुगे ॥१७॥
17. maheṣvāsā rājaputrā bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ ,
kekayāneva bhāgena kṛtvā yotsyanti saṁyuge.
17. maheṣvāsāḥ rājaputrāḥ bhrātaraḥ pañca kekayāḥ
kekayān eva bhāgena kṛtvā yotsyanti saṃyuge
17. The five Kekaya princes, who are great archers and brothers, will fight in battle, having taken the Kekayas themselves as their designated share (of opponents).
तेषामेव कृतो भागो मालवाः शाल्वकेकयाः ।
त्रिगर्तानां च द्वौ मुख्यौ यौ तौ संशप्तकाविति ॥१८॥
18. teṣāmeva kṛto bhāgo mālavāḥ śālvakekayāḥ ,
trigartānāṁ ca dvau mukhyau yau tau saṁśaptakāviti.
18. teṣām eva kṛtaḥ bhāgaḥ mālavāḥ śālvakekayāḥ
trigartānām ca dvau mukhyau yau tau saṃśaptakau iti
18. Indeed, for them, a share was assigned: the Malavas, Salvas, and Kekayas. And of the Trigartas, the two principal ones, those who are known as the Saṃśaptakas (oath-bound warriors), were also assigned.
दुर्योधनसुताः सर्वे तथा दुःशासनस्य च ।
सौभद्रेण कृतो भागो राजा चैव बृहद्बलः ॥१९॥
19. duryodhanasutāḥ sarve tathā duḥśāsanasya ca ,
saubhadreṇa kṛto bhāgo rājā caiva bṛhadbalaḥ.
19. duryodhanasutāḥ sarve tathā duḥśāsanasya ca
saubhadreṇa kṛtaḥ bhāgaḥ rājā ca eva bṛhadbalaḥ
19. All the sons of Duryodhana, and likewise those of Duḥśāsana, were assigned as a portion to Abhimanyu (Saubhadra). And King Bṛhadbala was also thus assigned.
द्रौपदेया महेष्वासाः सुवर्णविकृतध्वजाः ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखा द्रोणमभियास्यन्ति भारत ॥२०॥
20. draupadeyā maheṣvāsāḥ suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhā droṇamabhiyāsyanti bhārata.
20. Draupadeyāḥ maheṣvāsāḥ suvarṇavikṛtadhvajāḥ
Dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhāḥ Droṇam abhiyāsyanti Bhārata
20. O descendant of Bharata, the sons of Draupadi, who are great archers with banners embellished with gold, and who are led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, will attack Drona.
चेकितानः सोमदत्तं द्वैरथे योद्धुमिच्छति ।
भोजं तु कृतवर्माणं युयुधानो युयुत्सति ॥२१॥
21. cekitānaḥ somadattaṁ dvairathe yoddhumicchati ,
bhojaṁ tu kṛtavarmāṇaṁ yuyudhāno yuyutsati.
21. Cekitānaḥ Somadattam dvairathe yoddhum icchati
Bhojam tu Kṛtavarmāṇam Yuyudhānaḥ yuyutsati
21. Cekitana desires to fight Somadatta in a duel. Yuyudhana, on the other hand, wishes to contend with Kṛtavarman, the Bhoja.
सहदेवस्तु माद्रेयः शूरः संक्रन्दनो युधि ।
स्वमंशं कल्पयामास श्यालं ते सुबलात्मजम् ॥२२॥
22. sahadevastu mādreyaḥ śūraḥ saṁkrandano yudhi ,
svamaṁśaṁ kalpayāmāsa śyālaṁ te subalātmajam.
22. Sahadevaḥ tu Mādreyaḥ śūraḥ saṅkrandanaḥ yudhi
svam aṃśam kalpayāmāsa śyālam te Subalātmajam
22. Sahadeva, the heroic son of Madri, who challenges loudly in battle, has chosen your brother-in-law, the son of Subala (Śakuni), as his personal adversary.
उलूकं चापि कैतव्यं ये च सारस्वता गणाः ।
नकुलः कल्पयामास भागं माद्रवतीसुतः ॥२३॥
23. ulūkaṁ cāpi kaitavyaṁ ye ca sārasvatā gaṇāḥ ,
nakulaḥ kalpayāmāsa bhāgaṁ mādravatīsutaḥ.
23. Ulūkam ca api Kaitavyam ye ca Sārasvatāḥ gaṇāḥ
Nakulaḥ kalpayāmāsa bhāgam Mādravatīsutaḥ
23. Nakula, the son of Mādravatī, on his part, assigned Ulūka, the son of Kitava, and the Sarasvata warriors as his portion (of combatants).
ये चान्ये पार्थिवा राजन्प्रत्युद्यास्यन्ति संयुगे ।
समाह्वानेन तांश्चापि पाण्डुपुत्रा अकल्पयन् ॥२४॥
24. ye cānye pārthivā rājanpratyudyāsyanti saṁyuge ,
samāhvānena tāṁścāpi pāṇḍuputrā akalpayan.
24. ye ca anye pārthivāḥ rājan pratyudyāsyanti saṃyuge
samāhvānena tān ca api pāṇḍuputrāḥ akalpayan
24. O king, the Pāṇḍavas also arranged for those other earthly kings, who will advance into battle, by means of a summons.
एवमेषामनीकानि प्रविभक्तानि भागशः ।
यत्ते कार्यं सपुत्रस्य क्रियतां तदकालिकम् ॥२५॥
25. evameṣāmanīkāni pravibhaktāni bhāgaśaḥ ,
yatte kāryaṁ saputrasya kriyatāṁ tadakālikam.
25. evam eṣām anīkāni pravibhaktāni bhāgaśaḥ yat
te kāryam saputrasya kriyatām tat akālikam
25. Thus, their armies are divided into sections. Whatever task you and your son have, that should be done without delay.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
न सन्ति सर्वे पुत्रा मे मूढा दुर्द्यूतदेविनः ।
येषां युद्धं बलवता भीमेन रणमूर्धनि ॥२६॥
26. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
na santi sarve putrā me mūḍhā durdyūtadevinaḥ ,
yeṣāṁ yuddhaṁ balavatā bhīmena raṇamūrdhani.
26. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca na santi sarve putrāḥ me mūḍhāḥ
durdyūtadevinaḥ yeṣām yuddham balavatā bhīmena raṇamūrdhani
26. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "My sons are all deluded, unlucky gamblers. There is no battle for them with the powerful Bhīma at the forefront of the fight."
राजानः पार्थिवाः सर्वे प्रोक्षिताः कालधर्मणा ।
गाण्डीवाग्निं प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति पतङ्गा इव पावकम् ॥२७॥
27. rājānaḥ pārthivāḥ sarve prokṣitāḥ kāladharmaṇā ,
gāṇḍīvāgniṁ pravekṣyanti pataṅgā iva pāvakam.
27. rājānaḥ pārthivāḥ sarve prokṣitāḥ kāladharmaṇā
gāṇḍīva agnim pravekṣyanti pataṅgāḥ iva pāvakam
27. All earthly kings are consecrated by the law of time (kāladharma), and they will enter Gāṇḍīva's fire like moths entering a flame.
विद्रुतां वाहिनीं मन्ये कृतवैरैर्महात्मभिः ।
तां रणे केऽनुयास्यन्ति प्रभग्नां पाण्डवैर्युधि ॥२८॥
28. vidrutāṁ vāhinīṁ manye kṛtavairairmahātmabhiḥ ,
tāṁ raṇe ke'nuyāsyanti prabhagnāṁ pāṇḍavairyudhi.
28. vidrutām vāhinīm manye kṛtavairaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
tām raṇe ke anuyāsyanti prabhagnām pāṇḍavaiḥ yudhi
28. I believe that army, scattered and utterly defeated in battle by the Pāṇḍavas—those great souls (mahātmas) who have become our adversaries—who will follow it?
सर्वे ह्यतिरथाः शूराः कीर्तिमन्तः प्रतापिनः ।
सूर्यपावकयोस्तुल्यास्तेजसा समितिंजयाः ॥२९॥
29. sarve hyatirathāḥ śūrāḥ kīrtimantaḥ pratāpinaḥ ,
sūryapāvakayostulyāstejasā samitiṁjayāḥ.
29. sarve hi atirathāḥ śūrāḥ kīrtimantaḥ pratāpinaḥ
sūryapāvarkayoḥ tulyāḥ tejasā samitiṃjayāḥ
29. Indeed, all are great chariot-warriors (atiraṭhas), heroes, glorious, and formidable. They are equal to the sun and fire in their brilliance, and they are conquerors in battle.
येषां युधिष्ठिरो नेता गोप्ता च मधुसूदनः ।
योधौ च पाण्डवौ वीरौ सव्यसाचिवृकोदरौ ॥३०॥
30. yeṣāṁ yudhiṣṭhiro netā goptā ca madhusūdanaḥ ,
yodhau ca pāṇḍavau vīrau savyasācivṛkodarau.
30. yeṣām yudhiṣṭhiraḥ netā goptā ca madhusūdanaḥ
yodhau ca pāṇḍavau vīrau savyasācivṛkodarau
30. They are those whose leader is Yudhiṣṭhira, and whose protector is Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa). Their two heroic Pāṇḍava warriors are Savyasācin (Arjuna) and Vṛkodara (Bhīma).
नकुलः सहदेवश्च धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पार्षतः ।
सात्यकिर्द्रुपदश्चैव धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजः ॥३१॥
31. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pārṣataḥ ,
sātyakirdrupadaścaiva dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cātmajaḥ.
31. nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ ca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pārṣataḥ
sātyakiḥ drupadaḥ ca eva dhṛṣṭadyumnasya ca ātmajaḥ
31. Nakula and Sahadeva, and Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the descendant of Pṛṣata (pārṣata); also Sātyaki and Drupada, and the son of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
उत्तमौजाश्च पाञ्चाल्यो युधामन्युश्च दुर्जयः ।
शिखण्डी क्षत्रदेवश्च तथा वैराटिरुत्तरः ॥३२॥
32. uttamaujāśca pāñcālyo yudhāmanyuśca durjayaḥ ,
śikhaṇḍī kṣatradevaśca tathā vairāṭiruttaraḥ.
32. uttamaujāḥ ca pāñcālyaḥ yudhāmanyuḥ ca durjayaḥ
śikhaṇḍī kṣatradevaḥ ca tathā vairāṭiḥ uttaraḥ
32. Uttamaujā, a prince of Pañcāla; Yudhamanyu, the unconquerable; Śikhaṇḍī, Kṣatradeva; and similarly, Uttara, son of Virāṭa.
काशयश्चेदयश्चैव मत्स्याः सर्वे च सृञ्जयाः ।
विराटपुत्रो बभ्रुश्च पाञ्चालाश्च प्रभद्रकाः ॥३३॥
33. kāśayaścedayaścaiva matsyāḥ sarve ca sṛñjayāḥ ,
virāṭaputro babhruśca pāñcālāśca prabhadrakāḥ.
33. kāśayaḥ ca cedayāḥ ca eva matsyāḥ sarve ca sṛñjayāḥ
virāṭaputraḥ babhruḥ ca pāñcālāḥ ca prabhadrākāḥ
33. Also, the Kāśyas, the Cedis, and indeed all the Matsyas and Sṛñjayas; Babhru, the son of Virāṭa; and the Pañcālas and Prabhadrakas.
येषामिन्द्रोऽप्यकामानां न हरेत्पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
वीराणां रणधीराणां ये भिन्द्युः पर्वतानपि ॥३४॥
34. yeṣāmindro'pyakāmānāṁ na haretpṛthivīmimām ,
vīrāṇāṁ raṇadhīrāṇāṁ ye bhindyuḥ parvatānapi.
34. yeṣām indraḥ api akāmānām na haret pṛthivīm imām
vīrāṇām raṇadhīrāṇām ye bhindyuḥ parvatān api
34. From these heroes, steadfast in battle, who could even shatter mountains, even Indra would not seize this earth against their will.
तान्सर्वान्गुणसंपन्नानमनुष्यप्रतापिनः ।
क्रोशतो मम दुष्पुत्रो योद्धुमिच्छति संजय ॥३५॥
35. tānsarvānguṇasaṁpannānamanuṣyapratāpinaḥ ,
krośato mama duṣputro yoddhumicchati saṁjaya.
35. tān sarvān guṇasampannān amanuṣyapratāpinaḥ
krośataḥ mama duṣputraḥ yoddhum icchati sañjaya
35. O Sañjaya, my wicked son desires to fight against all those [heroes] who are endowed with excellent qualities and possess superhuman valor, even as I lament.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
उभौ स्व एकजातीयौ तथोभौ भूमिगोचरौ ।
अथ कस्मात्पाण्डवानामेकतो मन्यसे जयम् ॥३६॥
36. duryodhana uvāca ,
ubhau sva ekajātīyau tathobhau bhūmigocarau ,
atha kasmātpāṇḍavānāmekato manyase jayam.
36. duryodhana uvāca ubhau sva ekajātau tathā ubhau
bhūmigocarau atha kasmāt pāṇḍavānām ekataḥ manyase jayam
36. Duryodhana said: "Both of us are certainly of the same lineage, and both of us dwell upon the earth. Then why do you believe that victory will be on the Pāṇḍavas' side alone?"
पितामहं च द्रोणं च कृपं कर्णं च दुर्जयम् ।
जयद्रथं सोमदत्तमश्वत्थामानमेव च ॥३७॥
37. pitāmahaṁ ca droṇaṁ ca kṛpaṁ karṇaṁ ca durjayam ,
jayadrathaṁ somadattamaśvatthāmānameva ca.
37. pitāmaham ca droṇam ca kṛpam karṇam ca durjayam
jayadratham somadattam aśvatthāmānam eva ca
37. (We have) Grandfather Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, the unconquerable Karṇa, Jayadratha, Somadatta, and Aśvatthāmā as well.
सुचेतसो महेष्वासानिन्द्रोऽपि सहितोऽमरैः ।
अशक्तः समरे जेतुं किं पुनस्तात पाण्डवाः ॥३८॥
38. sucetaso maheṣvāsānindro'pi sahito'maraiḥ ,
aśaktaḥ samare jetuṁ kiṁ punastāta pāṇḍavāḥ.
38. sucetasaḥ maheṣvāsān indraḥ api sahitaḥ amaraiḥ
aśaktaḥ samare jetum kim punaḥ tāta pāṇḍavāḥ
38. Even Indra, accompanied by the immortal gods (amarāḥ), would be unable to conquer these noble-minded, great archers in battle. How much less so, O father, can the Pāṇḍavas!
सर्वा च पृथिवी सृष्टा मदर्थे तात पाण्डवान् ।
आर्यान्धृतिमतः शूरानग्निकल्पान्प्रबाधितुम् ॥३९॥
39. sarvā ca pṛthivī sṛṣṭā madarthe tāta pāṇḍavān ,
āryāndhṛtimataḥ śūrānagnikalpānprabādhitum.
39. sarvā ca pṛthivī sṛṣṭā mat-arthe tāta pāṇḍavān
āryān dhṛtimataḥ śūrān agnikalpān prabādhitum
39. And the entire earth was created for my sake, O father, (to enable me) to suppress the Pāṇḍavas—those noble, resolute, brave, and fire-like (warriors).
न मामकान्पाण्डवास्ते समर्थाः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ।
पराक्रान्तो ह्यहं पाण्डून्सपुत्रान्योद्धुमाहवे ॥४०॥
40. na māmakānpāṇḍavāste samarthāḥ prativīkṣitum ,
parākrānto hyahaṁ pāṇḍūnsaputrānyoddhumāhave.
40. na māmakān pāṇḍavāḥ te samarthāḥ prativīkṣitum
parākrāntaḥ hi aham pāṇḍūn saputrān yoddhum āhave
40. Those Pandavas are not capable of confronting my men. Indeed, I am valorous and able to fight the Pandavas along with their sons in battle.
मत्प्रियं पार्थिवाः सर्वे ये चिकीर्षन्ति भारत ।
ते तानावारयिष्यन्ति ऐणेयानिव तन्तुना ॥४१॥
41. matpriyaṁ pārthivāḥ sarve ye cikīrṣanti bhārata ,
te tānāvārayiṣyanti aiṇeyāniva tantunā.
41. matpriyam pārthivāḥ sarve ye cikīrṣanti bhārata
te tān āvārayiṣyanti aiṇeyān iva tantunā
41. O Bhārata, all those kings who desire to fulfill my wish will restrain them, just as fawns are restrained by a string.
महता रथवंशेन शरजालैश्च मामकैः ।
अभिद्रुता भविष्यन्ति पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ॥४२॥
42. mahatā rathavaṁśena śarajālaiśca māmakaiḥ ,
abhidrutā bhaviṣyanti pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha.
42. mahatā rathavaṃśena śarajālaiḥ ca māmakaiḥ
abhidrutāḥ bhaviṣyanti pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
42. The Pañcālas, together with the Pandavas, will be assailed by my vast array of chariots and my showers of arrows.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
उन्मत्त इव मे पुत्रो विलपत्येष संजय ।
न हि शक्तो युधा जेतुं धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥४३॥
43. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
unmatta iva me putro vilapatyeṣa saṁjaya ,
na hi śakto yudhā jetuṁ dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.
43. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca unmattaḥ iva me putraḥ vilapati eṣaḥ
saṃjaya na hi śaktaḥ yudhā jetum dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
43. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "O Saṃjaya, this son of mine (Duryodhana) raves as if he were insane. Indeed, he is not capable of conquering Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), in battle."
जानाति हि सदा भीष्मः पाण्डवानां यशस्विनाम् ।
बलवत्तां सपुत्राणां धर्मज्ञानां महात्मनाम् ॥४४॥
44. jānāti hi sadā bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ yaśasvinām ,
balavattāṁ saputrāṇāṁ dharmajñānāṁ mahātmanām.
44. jānāti hi sadā bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍavānām yaśasvinām
balavattām saputrāṇām dharmajñānām mahātmanām
44. Indeed, Bhishma always knows the great strength of the glorious Pandavas and their sons, who are knowledgeable in natural law (dharma) and are great-souled (mahātman).
यतो नारोचयमहं विग्रहं तैर्महात्मभिः ।
किं तु संजय मे ब्रूहि पुनस्तेषां विचेष्टितम् ॥४५॥
45. yato nārocayamahaṁ vigrahaṁ tairmahātmabhiḥ ,
kiṁ tu saṁjaya me brūhi punasteṣāṁ viceṣṭitam.
45. yataḥ na arocayam aham vigraham taiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
kim tu saṃjaya me brūhi punaḥ teṣām viceṣṭitam
45. Therefore, I did not approve of conflict with those great-souled (mahātman) ones. But, O Sanjaya, tell me again about their actions.
कस्तांस्तरस्विनो भूयः संदीपयति पाण्डवान् ।
अर्चिष्मतो महेष्वासान्हविषा पावकानिव ॥४६॥
46. kastāṁstarasvino bhūyaḥ saṁdīpayati pāṇḍavān ,
arciṣmato maheṣvāsānhaviṣā pāvakāniva.
46. kaḥ tān tarasvinaḥ bhūyaḥ saṃdīpayati pāṇḍavān
arciṣmataḥ mahā iṣvāsān haviṣā pāvakān iva
46. Who again ignites those powerful Pandavas, those fiery, great archers, just as one ignites fires with ghee (havis)?
संजय उवाच ।
धृष्टद्युम्नः सदैवैतान्संदीपयति भारत ।
युध्यध्वमिति मा भैष्ट युद्धाद्भरतसत्तमाः ॥४७॥
47. saṁjaya uvāca ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ sadaivaitānsaṁdīpayati bhārata ,
yudhyadhvamiti mā bhaiṣṭa yuddhādbharatasattamāḥ.
47. saṃjaya uvāca dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ sadā eva etān saṃdīpayati
bhārata yudhyadhvam iti mā bhaiṣṭa yuddhāt bharatasattamāḥ
47. Sanjaya said: "O Bhārata, Dhṛṣṭadyumna always encourages them, saying, 'Fight! Do not fear war, O best among the Bharatas!'"
ये केचित्पार्थिवास्तत्र धार्तराष्ट्रेण संवृताः ।
युद्धे समागमिष्यन्ति तुमुले कवचह्रदे ॥४८॥
48. ye kecitpārthivāstatra dhārtarāṣṭreṇa saṁvṛtāḥ ,
yuddhe samāgamiṣyanti tumule kavacahrade.
48. ye kecit pārthivāḥ tatra dhārtarāṣṭreṇa saṃvṛtāḥ
yuddhe samāgamiṣyanti tumule kavacahrade
48. All those kings who are gathered there by the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Duryodhana) and who will assemble in this tumultuous battle, which is like a deep lake of armors...
तान्सर्वानाहवे क्रुद्धान्सानुबन्धान्समागतान् ।
अहमेकः समादास्ये तिमिर्मत्स्यानिवौदकान् ॥४९॥
49. tānsarvānāhave kruddhānsānubandhānsamāgatān ,
ahamekaḥ samādāsye timirmatsyānivaudakān.
49. tān sarvān āhave kruddhān sānubandhān samāgatān
aham ekaḥ samādāsye timiḥ matsyān iva audakān
49. I alone will take on all those who have assembled in battle, enraged and accompanied by their followers, just as a great whale (timi) swallows aquatic fish.
भीष्मं द्रोणं कृपं कर्णं द्रौणिं शल्यं सुयोधनम् ।
एतांश्चापि निरोत्स्यामि वेलेव मकरालयम् ॥५०॥
50. bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ karṇaṁ drauṇiṁ śalyaṁ suyodhanam ,
etāṁścāpi nirotsyāmi veleva makarālayam.
50. bhīṣmam droṇam kṛpam karṇam drauṇim śalyam suyodhanam
etān ca api nirotsyāmi velā iva makarālayam
50. I will restrain Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Drauṇi, Śalya, and Suyodhana (Duryodhana), just as a shore restrains the ocean, the abode of sea monsters.
तथा ब्रुवाणं धर्मात्मा प्राह राजा युधिष्ठिरः ।
तव धैर्यं च वीर्यं च पाञ्चालाः पाण्डवैः सह ।
सर्वे समधिरूढाः स्म संग्रामान्नः समुद्धर ॥५१॥
51. tathā bruvāṇaṁ dharmātmā prāha rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
tava dhairyaṁ ca vīryaṁ ca pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
sarve samadhirūḍhāḥ sma saṁgrāmānnaḥ samuddhara.
51. tathā bruvāṇam dharmātmā prāha rājā
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tava dhairyam ca vīryam ca
pāñcālāḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha sarve
samadhirūḍhāḥ sma saṃgrāmāt naḥ samuddhara
51. As he spoke thus, King Yudhiṣṭhira, whose intrinsic nature (dharma) was righteousness, said: 'All of us Pāñcālas, along with the Pāṇḍavas, place our reliance upon your courage and valor. Therefore, deliver us from this battle!'
जानामि त्वां महाबाहो क्षत्रधर्मे व्यवस्थितम् ।
समर्थमेकं पर्याप्तं कौरवाणां युयुत्सताम् ।
भवता यद्विधातव्यं तन्नः श्रेयः परंतप ॥५२॥
52. jānāmi tvāṁ mahābāho kṣatradharme vyavasthitam ,
samarthamekaṁ paryāptaṁ kauravāṇāṁ yuyutsatām ,
bhavatā yadvidhātavyaṁ tannaḥ śreyaḥ paraṁtapa.
52. jānāmi tvām mahābāho kṣatradharme
vyavasthitam samartham ekam paryāptam
kauravāṇām yuyutsatām bhavatā yat
vidhātavyam tat naḥ śreyaḥ paraṃtapa
52. O mighty-armed one, O scorcher of foes, I know that you are committed to the warrior's code (kṣatradharma). You alone are capable and sufficient against the Kauravas who wish to fight. Whatever action is to be taken by you will be beneficial (śreyaḥ) for us.
संग्रामादपयातानां भग्नानां शरणैषिणाम् ।
पौरुषं दर्शयञ्शूरो यस्तिष्ठेदग्रतः पुमान् ।
क्रीणीयात्तं सहस्रेण नीतिमन्नाम तत्पदम् ॥५३॥
53. saṁgrāmādapayātānāṁ bhagnānāṁ śaraṇaiṣiṇām ,
pauruṣaṁ darśayañśūro yastiṣṭhedagrataḥ pumān ,
krīṇīyāttaṁ sahasreṇa nītimannāma tatpadam.
53. saṁgrāmāt apayātānām bhagnānām
śaraṇaiṣiṇām pauruṣam darśayan śūraḥ
yaḥ tiṣṭhet agrataḥ pumān krīṇīyāt
tam sahasreṇa nītiman nāma tat padam
53. O man of policy (nītiman), a courageous man who stands at the forefront, displaying valor (pauruṣa) to those who have fled from battle, who are defeated and seeking refuge—that man should indeed be bought for a thousand (coins), and that is a worthy position (tat padam).
स त्वं शूरश्च वीरश्च विक्रान्तश्च नरर्षभ ।
भयार्तानां परित्राता संयुगेषु न संशयः ॥५४॥
54. sa tvaṁ śūraśca vīraśca vikrāntaśca nararṣabha ,
bhayārtānāṁ paritrātā saṁyugeṣu na saṁśayaḥ.
54. sa tvam śūraḥ ca vīraḥ ca vikrāntaḥ ca nararṣabha
bhayārtānām paritrātā saṁyugeṣu na saṁśayaḥ
54. And you, O best among men (nararṣabha), are indeed brave, heroic, and valiant, a protector of those afflicted by fear in battles. There is no doubt about this.
एवं ब्रुवति कौन्तेये धर्मात्मनि युधिष्ठिरे ।
धृष्टद्युम्न उवाचेदं मां वचो गतसाध्वसः ॥५५॥
55. evaṁ bruvati kaunteye dharmātmani yudhiṣṭhire ,
dhṛṣṭadyumna uvācedaṁ māṁ vaco gatasādhvasaḥ.
55. evam bruvati kaunteye dharmātmani yudhiṣṭhire
dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ uvāca idam mām vacaḥ gatassādhvasaḥ
55. While Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti (Kaunteya) and a righteous soul (dharmātman), was speaking thus, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, having become fearless, spoke these words to me.
सर्वाञ्जनपदान्सूत योधा दुर्योधनस्य ये ।
सबाह्लीकान्कुरून्ब्रूयाः प्रातिपेयाञ्शरद्वतः ॥५६॥
56. sarvāñjanapadānsūta yodhā duryodhanasya ye ,
sabāhlīkānkurūnbrūyāḥ prātipeyāñśaradvataḥ.
56. sarvān janapadān sūta yodhā duryodhanasya ye
sabāhlīkān kurūn brūyāḥ prātipayān śaradvataḥ
56. O charioteer (sūta), you should inform all the inhabitants of the provinces, and those warriors who belong to Duryodhana, along with the Bāhlīkas, the Kurus, and the Prātipīyas of Śaradvata.
सूतपुत्रं तथा द्रोणं सहपुत्रं जयद्रथम् ।
दुःशासनं विकर्णं च तथा दुर्योधनं नृपम् ॥५७॥
57. sūtaputraṁ tathā droṇaṁ sahaputraṁ jayadratham ,
duḥśāsanaṁ vikarṇaṁ ca tathā duryodhanaṁ nṛpam.
57. sūtaputram tathā droṇam sahaputram jayadratham
duḥśāsanam vikarṇam ca tathā duryodhanam nṛpam
57. Also (inform) Sūtaputra (Karna), and Droṇa along with his son (Aśvatthāman), Jayadratha, Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, and also King Duryodhana.
भीष्मं चैव ब्रूहि गत्वा त्वमाशु युधिष्ठिरं साधुनैवाभ्युपेत ।
मा वो वधीदर्जुनो देवगुप्तः क्षिप्रं याचध्वं पाण्डवं लोकवीरम् ॥५८॥
58. bhīṣmaṁ caiva brūhi gatvā tvamāśu; yudhiṣṭhiraṁ sādhunaivābhyupeta ,
mā vo vadhīdarjuno devaguptaḥ; kṣipraṁ yācadhvaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ lokavīram.
58. bhīṣmam ca eva brūhi gatvā tvam āśu
yudhiṣṭhiram sādhunā eva abhyupeta
mā vaḥ vadhīt arjunaḥ devaguptaḥ
kṣipram yācadhvam pāṇḍavam lokavīram
58. You, having gone quickly, should tell Bhīṣma, and indeed approach Yudhiṣṭhira, who is resorted to by the virtuous. May Arjuna, protected by the gods, not kill you all! Quickly implore the Pāṇḍava, the hero of the world.
नैतादृशो हि योधोऽस्ति पृथिव्यामिह कश्चन ।
यथाविधः सव्यसाची पाण्डवः शस्त्रवित्तमः ॥५९॥
59. naitādṛśo hi yodho'sti pṛthivyāmiha kaścana ,
yathāvidhaḥ savyasācī pāṇḍavaḥ śastravittamaḥ.
59. na etādṛśaḥ hi yodhaḥ asti pṛthivyām iha kaścana
yathāvidhaḥ savyasācī pāṇḍavaḥ śastravittamaḥ
59. Indeed, there is no such warrior as Savyasācin (Arjuna) anywhere on this earth, the Pāṇḍava who is most excellent in the knowledge of weapons.
देवैर्हि संभृतो दिव्यो रथो गाण्डीवधन्वनः ।
न स जेयो मनुष्येण मा स्म कृध्वं मनो युधि ॥६०॥
60. devairhi saṁbhṛto divyo ratho gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ,
na sa jeyo manuṣyeṇa mā sma kṛdhvaṁ mano yudhi.
60. devaiḥ hi saṃbhṛtaḥ divyaḥ rathaḥ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ
na saḥ jeyaḥ manuṣyeṇa mā sma kṛdhvam manaḥ yudhi
60. Indeed, the divine chariot of Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, was assembled by the gods. He is not to be conquered by any man. Therefore, do not set your minds on battle.
