स्थाणुरुवाच ।
प्रजासर्गनिमित्तं मे कार्यवत्तामिमां प्रभो ।
विद्धि सृष्टास्त्वया हीमा मा कुप्यासां पितामह ॥१॥
1. sthāṇuruvāca ,
prajāsarganimittaṁ me kāryavattāmimāṁ prabho ,
viddhi sṛṣṭāstvayā hīmā mā kupyāsāṁ pitāmaha.

prabho viddhi sṛṣṭāḥ tvayā hi imāḥ mā kupyāḥ āsām pitāmaha
1. sthāṇuḥ uvāca: prabho pitāmaha,
me imām kāryavattām prajāsarganimittaṃ viddhi.
hi imāḥ tvayā sṛṣṭāḥ.
āsām mā kupyāḥ.
1. Sthāṇu said: 'O Lord, O Grandfather (Brahmā), know this task of mine to be for the purpose of creating beings. For these creatures were indeed created by you. Do not be angry with them.'
तव तेजोग्निना देव प्रजा दह्यन्ति सर्वशः ।
ता दृष्ट्वा मम कारुण्यं मा कुप्यासां जगत्प्रभो ॥२॥
2. tava tejogninā deva prajā dahyanti sarvaśaḥ ,
tā dṛṣṭvā mama kāruṇyaṁ mā kupyāsāṁ jagatprabho.
2. tava tejaḥ agninā deva prajāḥ dahyanti sarvaśaḥ
tāḥ dṛṣṭvā mama kāruṇyaṃ mā kupyāḥ āsām jagatprabho
2. deva jagatprabho,
tava tejaḥ agninā prajāḥ sarvaśaḥ dahyanti.
tāḥ dṛṣṭvā mama kāruṇyam (utpadyate).
āsām mā kupyāḥ.
2. O God (Brahmā), your creatures burn up entirely by the fire of your energy. Seeing them, my compassion (kāruṇya) arises. O Lord of the world, do not be angry with them.
प्रजापतिरुवाच ।
न कुप्ये न च मे कामो न भवेरन्प्रजा इति ।
लाघवार्थं धरण्यास्तु ततः संहार इष्यते ॥३॥
3. prajāpatiruvāca ,
na kupye na ca me kāmo na bhaveranprajā iti ,
lāghavārthaṁ dharaṇyāstu tataḥ saṁhāra iṣyate.
3. prajāpatiḥ uvāca na kupye na ca me kāmaḥ na bhaveran
prajāḥ iti lāghavārthaṃ dharaṇyāḥ tu tataḥ saṃhāraḥ iṣyate
3. prajāpatiḥ uvāca: na kupye,
ca me kāmaḥ prajāḥ na bhaveran iti na.
tu dharaṇyāḥ lāghavārthaṃ tataḥ saṃhāraḥ iṣyate.
3. Prajāpati (Brahmā) replied: 'I am not angry, nor is it my desire that these creatures should cease to exist. Rather, it is for the sake of lightening the burden of the earth that destruction is desired.'
इयं हि मां सदा देवी भारार्ता समचोदयत् ।
संहारार्थं महादेव भारेणाप्सु निमज्जति ॥४॥
4. iyaṁ hi māṁ sadā devī bhārārtā samacodayat ,
saṁhārārthaṁ mahādeva bhāreṇāpsu nimajjati.
4. iyam hi mām sadā devī bhārārtā samacodayat
saṃhārārtham mahādeva bhāreṇa apsu nimajjati
4. iyam hi devī bhārārtā sadā mām samacodayat
saṃhārārtham he mahādeva bhāreṇa apsu nimajjati
4. Indeed, this goddess (Devī), afflicted by the burden, always urged me for destruction. O great god (Mahādeva), she herself sinks into the waters due to the burden.
यदाहं नाधिगच्छामि बुद्ध्या बहु विचारयन् ।
संहारमासां वृद्धानां ततो मां क्रोध आविशत् ॥५॥
5. yadāhaṁ nādhigacchāmi buddhyā bahu vicārayan ,
saṁhāramāsāṁ vṛddhānāṁ tato māṁ krodha āviśat.
5. yadā aham na adhigacchāmi buddhyā bahu vicārayan
saṃhāram āsām vṛddhānām tataḥ mām krodhaḥ āviśat
5. yadā aham buddhyā bahu vicārayan āsām vṛddhānām
saṃhāram na adhigacchāmi tataḥ krodhaḥ mām āviśat
5. When I, contemplating deeply with my intellect, could not discern the destruction of these aging beings, then anger entered me.
स्थाणुरुवाच ।
संहारान्तं प्रसीदस्व मा क्रुधस्त्रिदशेश्वर ।
मा प्रजाः स्थावरं चैव जङ्गमं च विनीनशः ॥६॥
6. sthāṇuruvāca ,
saṁhārāntaṁ prasīdasva mā krudhastridaśeśvara ,
mā prajāḥ sthāvaraṁ caiva jaṅgamaṁ ca vinīnaśaḥ.
6. sthāṇuḥ uvāca saṃhārāntam prasīdasva mā krudhaḥ tridaśeśvara
mā prajāḥ sthāvaram ca eva jaṅgamam ca vinīnaśaḥ
6. sthāṇuḥ uvāca he tridaśeśvara saṃhārāntam prasīdasva mā
krudhaḥ mā prajāḥ sthāvaram ca eva jaṅgamam ca vinīnaśaḥ
6. Sthāṇu spoke: 'Be pacified; do not be angry until the end of destruction, O Lord of the gods (tridaśeśvara). Do not utterly destroy creatures, both the immobile (sthāvara) and the mobile (jaṅgama).'
पल्वलानि च सर्वाणि सर्वं चैव तृणोलपम् ।
स्थावरं जङ्गमं चैव भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम् ॥७॥
7. palvalāni ca sarvāṇi sarvaṁ caiva tṛṇolapam ,
sthāvaraṁ jaṅgamaṁ caiva bhūtagrāmaṁ caturvidham.
7. palvalāni ca sarvāṇi sarvam ca eva tṛṇolapam
sthāvaram jaṅgamam ca eva bhūtagrāmam caturvidham
7. sarvāṇi palvalāni ca sarvam tṛṇolapam ca eva
caturvidham bhūtagrāmam sthāvaram jaṅgamam ca eva
7. And all ponds, and all grass and reeds, as well as the four kinds of living beings (bhūtagrāma), both immobile (sthāvara) and mobile (jaṅgama).
तदेतद्भस्मसाद्भूतं जगत्सर्वमुपप्लुतम् ।
प्रसीद भगवन्साधो वर एष वृतो मया ॥८॥
8. tadetadbhasmasādbhūtaṁ jagatsarvamupaplutam ,
prasīda bhagavansādho vara eṣa vṛto mayā.
8. tad etat bhasmasāt bhūtam jagat sarvam upaplutam
prasīda bhagavan sādho varaḥ eṣaḥ vṛtaḥ mayā
8. etat tad sarvam jagat bhasmasāt bhūtam upaplutam
bhagavan sādho prasīda eṣaḥ varaḥ mayā vṛtaḥ
8. This entire world has been reduced to ashes and is overwhelmed. Therefore, O venerable (bhagavat) and righteous one, be pleased! This is the boon that I have chosen.
नष्टा न पुनरेष्यन्ति प्रजा ह्येताः कथंचन ।
तस्मान्निवर्त्यतामेतत्तेजः स्वेनैव तेजसा ॥९॥
9. naṣṭā na punareṣyanti prajā hyetāḥ kathaṁcana ,
tasmānnivartyatāmetattejaḥ svenaiva tejasā.
9. naṣṭā na punaḥ eṣyanti prajāḥ hi etāḥ kathañcana
tasmāt nivartyatām etat tejaḥ svena eva tejasā
9. hi etāḥ prajāḥ naṣṭāḥ punaḥ kathañcana na eṣyanti
tasmāt etat tejaḥ svena eva tejasā nivartyatām
9. These creatures, once destroyed, will certainly not return by any means. Therefore, let this power (tejas) be withdrawn by your own power (tejas).
उपायमन्यं संपश्य प्रजानां हितकाम्यया ।
यथेमे जन्तवः सर्वे निवर्तेरन्परंतप ॥१०॥
10. upāyamanyaṁ saṁpaśya prajānāṁ hitakāmyayā ,
yatheme jantavaḥ sarve nivarteranparaṁtapa.
10. upāyam anyam saṃpaśya prajānām hitakāmyayā
yathā ime jantavaḥ sarve nivarteran paraṃtapa
10. paraṃtapa prajānām hitakāmyayā anyam upāyam
saṃpaśya yathā ime sarve jantavaḥ nivarteran
10. For the sake of the welfare of the creatures, find another method, O tormentor of foes, so that all these beings may turn back (from destruction).
अभावमभिगच्छेयुरुत्सन्नप्रजनाः प्रजाः ।
अधिदैवनियुक्तोऽस्मि त्वया लोकेष्विहेश्वर ॥११॥
11. abhāvamabhigaccheyurutsannaprajanāḥ prajāḥ ,
adhidaivaniyukto'smi tvayā lokeṣviheśvara.
11. abhāvam abhigaccheyuḥ utsannaprajanāḥ prajāḥ
adhidaivaniyuktaḥ asmi tvayā lokeṣu iha īśvara
11. utsannaprajanāḥ prajāḥ abhāvam abhigaccheyuḥ
īśvara iha lokeṣu tvayā adhidaivaniyuktaḥ asmi
11. The creatures, having lost their offspring, would certainly go to annihilation. O Lord, I have been appointed by you as a presiding deity (adhidaiva) in these worlds here.
त्वद्भवं हि जगन्नाथ जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
प्रसाद्य त्वां महादेव याचाम्यावृत्तिजाः प्रजाः ॥१२॥
12. tvadbhavaṁ hi jagannātha jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ,
prasādya tvāṁ mahādeva yācāmyāvṛttijāḥ prajāḥ.
12. tvadbhavam hi jagannātha jagat sthāvarajaṅgamam
prasādya tvām mahādeva yācāmi āvṛttijāḥ prajāḥ
12. jagannātha,
mahādeva,
hi sthāvarajaṅgamam jagat tvadbhavam.
tvām prasādya,
āvṛttijāḥ prajāḥ yācāmi.
12. O Lord of the world, indeed, this entire world, both moving and unmoving, originates from you. Having appeased you, O Great God, I request [your grace for] the beings born from repeated existence (saṃsāra).
नारद उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं देवः स्थाणोर्नियतवाङ्मनाः ।
तेजस्तत्स्वं निजग्राह पुनरेवान्तरात्मना ॥१३॥
13. nārada uvāca ,
śrutvā tu vacanaṁ devaḥ sthāṇorniyatavāṅmanāḥ ,
tejastatsvaṁ nijagrāha punarevāntarātmanā.
13. nārada uvāca śrutvā tu vacanam devaḥ sthāṇoḥ niyatavāṅmanāḥ
tejaḥ tat svam nijagrāha punareva antarātmanā
13. nārada uvāca: tu devaḥ niyatavāṅmanāḥ,
sthāṇoḥ vacanam śrutvā,
tat svam tejaḥ punareva antarātmanā nijagrāha.
13. Nārada said: But the god, having heard Sthāṇu's words, and having controlled his speech and mind, indeed restrained his own fiery energy (tejas) again by his inner self (ātman).
ततोऽग्निमुपसंगृह्य भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः ।
प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च कल्पयामास वै प्रभुः ॥१४॥
14. tato'gnimupasaṁgṛhya bhagavāँllokapūjitaḥ ,
pravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ ca kalpayāmāsa vai prabhuḥ.
14. tataḥ agnim upasaṃgṛhya bhagavān lokapūjitaḥ
pravṛttim ca nivṛttim ca kalpayāmāsa vai prabhuḥ
14. tataḥ,
lokapūjitaḥ bhagavān prabhuḥ agnim upasaṃgṛhya,
pravṛttim ca nivṛttim ca vai kalpayāmāsa.
14. Then, having gathered that fire, the blessed Lord (bhagavān), worshipped by the worlds, indeed fashioned both the path of activity (pravṛtti) and the path of cessation (nivṛtti).
उपसंहरतस्तस्य तमग्निं रोषजं तदा ।
प्रादुर्बभूव विश्वेभ्यः खेभ्यो नारी महात्मनः ॥१५॥
15. upasaṁharatastasya tamagniṁ roṣajaṁ tadā ,
prādurbabhūva viśvebhyaḥ khebhyo nārī mahātmanaḥ.
15. upasaṃharataḥ tasya tam agnim roṣajam tadā
prādurbabhūva viśvebhyaḥ khebhyaḥ nārī mahātmanaḥ
15. tadā,
tasya mahātmanaḥ roṣajam tam agnim upasaṃharataḥ,
viśvebhyaḥ khebhyaḥ nārī prādurbabhūva.
15. Then, as that great-souled one (mahātman) was withdrawing that fire born of anger, a woman manifested from all his apertures (khebhyaḥ).
कृष्णा रक्ताम्बरधरा रक्तनेत्रतलान्तरा ।
दिव्यकुण्डलसंपन्ना दिव्याभरणभूषिता ॥१६॥
16. kṛṣṇā raktāmbaradharā raktanetratalāntarā ,
divyakuṇḍalasaṁpannā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā.

divyakuṇḍalasampannā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā
16. kṛṣṇā raktāmbaradharā raktanetratalāntarā

16. Dark-complexioned, she wore red garments and had red inner corners of her eyes. She was endowed with divine earrings and adorned with divine ornaments.
सा विनिःसृत्य वै खेभ्यो दक्षिणामाश्रिता दिशम् ।
ददृशातेऽथ तौ कन्यां देवौ विश्वेश्वरावुभौ ॥१७॥
17. sā viniḥsṛtya vai khebhyo dakṣiṇāmāśritā diśam ,
dadṛśāte'tha tau kanyāṁ devau viśveśvarāvubhau.
17. sā viniḥsṛtya vai khebhyaḥ dakṣiṇām āśritā diśam
dadṛśāte atha tau kanyām devau viśveśvarau ubhau
17. sā vai khebhyaḥ viniḥsṛtya dakṣiṇām diśam āśritā
atha tau ubhau devau viśveśvarau kanyām dadṛśāte
17. Indeed, having emerged from the heavens, she took the southern direction. Then, both those two gods, the Lords of the Universe (Viśveśvarau), saw the maiden.
तामाहूय तदा देवो लोकानामादिरीश्वरः ।
मृत्यो इति महीपाल जहि चेमाः प्रजा इति ॥१८॥
18. tāmāhūya tadā devo lokānāmādirīśvaraḥ ,
mṛtyo iti mahīpāla jahi cemāḥ prajā iti.
18. tām āhūya tadā devaḥ lokānām ādiḥ īśvaraḥ
mṛtyo iti mahīpāla jahi ca imāḥ prajāḥ iti
18. tadā devaḥ lokānām ādiḥ īśvaraḥ tām āhūya
mṛtyo iti mahīpāla jahi ca imāḥ prajāḥ iti
18. Then, the God, the primordial Lord (īśvara) of the worlds, having summoned her, said, 'O Death! (O king!), destroy these beings!'
त्वं हि संहारबुद्ध्या मे चिन्तिता रुषितेन च ।
तस्मात्संहर सर्वास्त्वं प्रजाः सजडपण्डिताः ॥१९॥
19. tvaṁ hi saṁhārabuddhyā me cintitā ruṣitena ca ,
tasmātsaṁhara sarvāstvaṁ prajāḥ sajaḍapaṇḍitāḥ.
19. tvam hi saṃhārabuddhyā me cintitā ruṣitena ca
tasmāt saṃhara sarvāḥ tvam prajāḥ sajaḍapaṇḍitāḥ
19. hi tvam me ruṣitena ca saṃhārabuddhyā cintitā.
tasmāt tvam sarvāḥ sajaḍapaṇḍitāḥ prajāḥ saṃhara.
19. Indeed, you were conceived by me, the enraged one, with the intention of destruction. Therefore, you must destroy all beings, including the foolish and the wise.
अविशेषेण चैव त्वं प्रजाः संहर भामिनि ।
मम त्वं हि नियोगेन श्रेयः परमवाप्स्यसि ॥२०॥
20. aviśeṣeṇa caiva tvaṁ prajāḥ saṁhara bhāmini ,
mama tvaṁ hi niyogena śreyaḥ paramavāpsyasi.
20. aviśeṣeṇa ca eva tvam prajāḥ saṃhara bhāmini
mama tvam hi niyogena śreyaḥ param avāpsyasi
20. bhāmini tvam ca eva aviśeṣeṇa prajāḥ saṃhara
tvam hi mama niyogena param śreyaḥ avāpsyasi
20. O passionate one, you shall indeed destroy creatures indiscriminately. By my command, you will attain the highest good.
एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी मृत्युः कमलमालिनी ।
प्रदध्यौ दुःखिता बाला साश्रुपातमतीव हि ॥२१॥
21. evamuktā tu sā devī mṛtyuḥ kamalamālinī ,
pradadhyau duḥkhitā bālā sāśrupātamatīva hi.
21. evam uktā tu sā devī mṛtyuḥ kamalamālinī
pradadhyau duḥkhitā bālā sāśrupātam atīva hi
21. evam uktā tu sā devī mṛtyuḥ kamalamālinī
duḥkhitā bālā atīva sāśrupātam hi pradadhyau
21. Thus addressed, that goddess Death (mṛtyu), adorned with a lotus garland, a young maiden who was very distressed and shedding many tears, meditated deeply (dhyāna).
पाणिभ्यां चैव जग्राह तान्यश्रूणि जनेश्वरः ।
मानवानां हितार्थाय ययाचे पुनरेव च ॥२२॥
22. pāṇibhyāṁ caiva jagrāha tānyaśrūṇi janeśvaraḥ ,
mānavānāṁ hitārthāya yayāce punareva ca.
22. pāṇibhyām ca eva jagrāha tāni aśrūṇi janeśvaraḥ
mānavānām hita arthāya yayāce punaḥ eva ca
22. janeśvaraḥ ca eva pāṇibhyām tāni aśrūṇi jagrāha
ca punaḥ eva mānavānām hita arthāya yayāce
22. The lord of men (janeśvara) indeed took those tears with both hands. And he pleaded once again for the welfare of humankind.
