वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तौ रथाभ्यां नरव्याघ्रौ दावस्योभयतः स्थितौ ।
दिक्षु सर्वासु भूतानां चक्राते कदनं महत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tau rathābhyāṁ naravyāghrau dāvasyobhayataḥ sthitau ,
dikṣu sarvāsu bhūtānāṁ cakrāte kadanaṁ mahat.

ubhayataḥ sthitau dikṣu sarvāsu bhūtānām cakrāte kadanam mahat
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Those two tiger-like men (naravyāghrau), stationed in their chariots on both sides of the forest fire (dāva), wrought great destruction upon the creatures in all directions.
यत्र यत्र हि दृश्यन्ते प्राणिनः खाण्डवालयाः ।
पलायन्तस्तत्र तत्र तौ वीरौ पर्यधावताम् ॥२॥
2. yatra yatra hi dṛśyante prāṇinaḥ khāṇḍavālayāḥ ,
palāyantastatra tatra tau vīrau paryadhāvatām.

2. Indeed, wherever living beings, the dwellers of Khāṇḍava, were seen fleeing, there those two heroes pursued them.
छिद्रं हि न प्रपश्यन्ति रथयोराशुविक्रमात् ।
आविद्धाविव दृश्येते रथिनौ तौ रथोत्तमौ ॥३॥
3. chidraṁ hi na prapaśyanti rathayorāśuvikramāt ,
āviddhāviva dṛśyete rathinau tau rathottamau.
3. chidram hi na prapaśyanti rathayoḥ āśuvikramāt
āviddhau iva dṛśyete rathinau tau rathottamau
3. Indeed, because of the swift movement of their two chariots, no flaw is perceived. Those two excellent charioteers are seen as if hurled like missiles.
खाण्डवे दह्यमाने तु भूतान्यथ सहस्रशः ।
उत्पेतुर्भैरवान्नादान्विनदन्तो दिशो दश ॥४॥
4. khāṇḍave dahyamāne tu bhūtānyatha sahasraśaḥ ,
utpeturbhairavānnādānvinadanto diśo daśa.

utpetuḥ bhairavān nādān vinadantaḥ diśaḥ daśa
4. Then, while Khāṇḍava was being burnt, thousands of beings flew up, roaring terrible sounds in all ten directions.
दग्धैकदेशा बहवो निष्टप्ताश्च तथापरे ।
स्फुटिताक्षा विशीर्णाश्च विप्लुताश्च विचेतसः ॥५॥
5. dagdhaikadeśā bahavo niṣṭaptāśca tathāpare ,
sphuṭitākṣā viśīrṇāśca viplutāśca vicetasaḥ.
5. dagdhaikadeśāḥ bahavaḥ niṣṭaptāḥ ca tathā apare
sphuṭitākṣāḥ viśīrṇāḥ ca viplutāḥ ca vicetasaḥ
5. Many were burnt in one part, while others were similarly tormented. Some had their eyes burst open, some were shattered, and others were scattered and unconscious.
समालिङ्ग्य सुतानन्ये पितॄन्मातॄंस्तथापरे ।
त्यक्तुं न शेकुः स्नेहेन तथैव निधनं गताः ॥६॥
6. samāliṅgya sutānanye pitṝnmātṝṁstathāpare ,
tyaktuṁ na śekuḥ snehena tathaiva nidhanaṁ gatāḥ.
6. samāliṅgya sutān anye pitṝn mātṝn tathā apare
tyaktum na śekuḥ snehena tathā eva nidhanam gatāḥ
6. Some embraced their sons, while others similarly held their fathers and mothers. Unable to abandon them due to their affection, they met their death in the same way.
विकृतैर्दर्शनैरन्ये समुत्पेतुः सहस्रशः ।
तत्र तत्र विघूर्णन्तः पुनरग्नौ प्रपेदिरे ॥७॥
7. vikṛtairdarśanairanye samutpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
tatra tatra vighūrṇantaḥ punaragnau prapedire.
7. vikṛtaiḥ darśanaiḥ anye samutpetuḥ sahasraśaḥ
tatra tatra vighūrṇantaḥ punar agnau prapedire
7. Others, with their disfigured appearances, sprang up in thousands. Reeling here and there, they again fell into the fire.
दग्धपक्षाक्षिचरणा विचेष्टन्तो महीतले ।
तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते विनश्यन्तः शरीरिणः ॥८॥
8. dagdhapakṣākṣicaraṇā viceṣṭanto mahītale ,
tatra tatra sma dṛśyante vinaśyantaḥ śarīriṇaḥ.
8. dagdhapakṣākṣicaraṇāḥ viceṣṭantaḥ mahītale
tatra tatra sma dṛśyante vinaśyantaḥ śarīriṇaḥ
8. Embodied beings (śarīriṇaḥ) were seen here and there on the ground, their wings, eyes, and feet burnt, struggling and perishing.
जलस्थानेषु सर्वेषु क्वाथ्यमानेषु भारत ।
गतसत्त्वाः स्म दृश्यन्ते कूर्ममत्स्याः सहस्रशः ॥९॥
9. jalasthāneṣu sarveṣu kvāthyamāneṣu bhārata ,
gatasattvāḥ sma dṛśyante kūrmamatsyāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
9. jalasthāneṣu sarveṣu kvāthyamāneṣu bhārata
gatasattvāḥ sma dṛśyante kūrmamatsyāḥ sahasraśaḥ
9. O Bhārata, in all the watery regions, as the waters were boiling, thousands of lifeless turtles and fish were seen.
शरीरैः संप्रदीप्तैश्च देहवन्त इवाग्नयः ।
अदृश्यन्त वने तस्मिन्प्राणिनः प्राणसंक्षये ॥१०॥
10. śarīraiḥ saṁpradīptaiśca dehavanta ivāgnayaḥ ,
adṛśyanta vane tasminprāṇinaḥ prāṇasaṁkṣaye.
10. śarīraiḥ sampradīptaiḥ ca dehavantaḥ iva agnayaḥ
adṛśyanta vane tasmin prāṇinaḥ prāṇasaṃkṣaye
10. In that forest, at the time of their demise, the creatures were seen with their bodies brightly burning, resembling embodied fires.
तांस्तथोत्पततः पार्थः शरैः संछिद्य खण्डशः ।
दीप्यमाने ततः प्रास्यत्प्रहसन्कृष्णवर्त्मनि ॥११॥
11. tāṁstathotpatataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ saṁchidya khaṇḍaśaḥ ,
dīpyamāne tataḥ prāsyatprahasankṛṣṇavartmani.
11. tān tathā utpatataḥ pārthaḥ śaraiḥ saṃchidya khaṇḍaśaḥ
dīpyamāne tataḥ prāsyat prahasan kṛṣṇavartmani
11. Then, smiling, Arjuna (pārtha) cut those creatures, who were rising up in that manner, into pieces with his arrows and cast them into the blazing fire (kṛṣṇavartman).
ते शराचितसर्वाङ्गा विनदन्तो महारवान् ।
ऊर्ध्वमुत्पत्य वेगेन निपेतुः पावके पुनः ॥१२॥
12. te śarācitasarvāṅgā vinadanto mahāravān ,
ūrdhvamutpatya vegena nipetuḥ pāvake punaḥ.
12. te śarācitasarvāṅgāḥ vinadantaḥ mahāravān
ūrdhvam utpatya vegena nipetuḥ pāvake punaḥ
12. Their entire bodies covered with arrows, those creatures, uttering great roars, swiftly rose upwards and then fell back into the fire again.
शरैरभ्याहतानां च दह्यतां च वनौकसाम् ।
विरावः श्रूयते ह स्म समुद्रस्येव मथ्यतः ॥१३॥
13. śarairabhyāhatānāṁ ca dahyatāṁ ca vanaukasām ,
virāvaḥ śrūyate ha sma samudrasyeva mathyataḥ.
13. śaraiḥ abhyāhatānām ca dahyatām ca vanaukasām
virāvaḥ śrūyate ha sma samudrasya iva mathyataḥ
13. Indeed, the cries of the forest creatures, who were struck by arrows and burning, were heard like the churning sound of the ocean.
वह्नेश्चापि प्रहृष्टस्य खमुत्पेतुर्महार्चिषः ।
जनयामासुरुद्वेगं सुमहान्तं दिवौकसाम् ॥१४॥
14. vahneścāpi prahṛṣṭasya khamutpeturmahārciṣaḥ ,
janayāmāsurudvegaṁ sumahāntaṁ divaukasām.
14. vahneḥ ca api prahṛṣṭasya kham utpetuḥ mahārciṣaḥ
janayāmāsuḥ udvegum sumahāntam divaukasām
14. And from the greatly pleased fire, mighty flames rose up into the sky. These caused immense anxiety among the gods.
ततो जग्मुर्महात्मानः सर्व एव दिवौकसः ।
शरणं देवराजानं सहस्राक्षं पुरंदरम् ॥१५॥
15. tato jagmurmahātmānaḥ sarva eva divaukasaḥ ,
śaraṇaṁ devarājānaṁ sahasrākṣaṁ puraṁdaram.
15. tataḥ jagmuḥ mahātmānaḥ sarve eva divaukasaḥ
śaraṇam devarājānam sahasrākṣam purandaram
15. Then, all those great-souled gods went to seek refuge with the king of the gods, the thousand-eyed Indra, the destroyer of cities.
देवा ऊचुः ।
किं न्विमे मानवाः सर्वे दह्यन्ते कृष्णवर्त्मना ।
कच्चिन्न संक्षयः प्राप्तो लोकानाममरेश्वर ॥१६॥
16. devā ūcuḥ ,
kiṁ nvime mānavāḥ sarve dahyante kṛṣṇavartmanā ,
kaccinna saṁkṣayaḥ prāpto lokānāmamareśvara.
16. devāḥ ūcuḥ kim nu ime mānavāḥ sarve dahyante kṛṣṇavartmanā
kaccit na saṃkṣayaḥ prāptaḥ lokānām amareśvara
16. The gods said: 'Why are all these humans being consumed by the fire (kṛṣṇavartman)? Surely, the annihilation of the worlds (loka) has not arrived, has it, O Lord of Immortals?'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा वृत्रहा तेभ्यः स्वयमेवान्ववेक्ष्य च ।
खाण्डवस्य विमोक्षार्थं प्रययौ हरिवाहनः ॥१७॥
17. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tacchrutvā vṛtrahā tebhyaḥ svayamevānvavekṣya ca ,
khāṇḍavasya vimokṣārthaṁ prayayau harivāhanaḥ.
17. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā vṛtrahā tebhyaḥ svayam eva
anvavekṣya ca khāṇḍavasya vimokṣārtham prayayau harivāhanaḥ
17. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Having heard that from them, and having personally investigated the situation for the release of Khāṇḍava, the slayer of Vṛtra (Vṛtrahā), who has Hari as his mount (Harivāhana), set out.'
महता मेघजालेन नानारूपेण वज्रभृत् ।
आकाशं समवस्तीर्य प्रववर्ष सुरेश्वरः ॥१८॥
18. mahatā meghajālena nānārūpeṇa vajrabhṛt ,
ākāśaṁ samavastīrya pravavarṣa sureśvaraḥ.
18. mahatā meghajālena nānārūpeṇa vajrabhṛt
ākāśam samavastīrya pravavarṣa sureśvaraḥ
18. The wielder of the thunderbolt (Vajrabhṛt), the lord of the gods (Sureśvara), having completely covered the sky with a vast, multi-formed network of clouds, then rained down.
ततोऽक्षमात्रा विसृजन्धाराः शतसहस्रशः ।
अभ्यवर्षत्सहस्राक्षः पावकं खाण्डवं प्रति ॥१९॥
19. tato'kṣamātrā visṛjandhārāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
abhyavarṣatsahasrākṣaḥ pāvakaṁ khāṇḍavaṁ prati.
19. tataḥ akṣamātrāḥ visṛjan dhārāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ
abhyavarṣat sahasrākṣaḥ pāvakam khāṇḍavam prati
19. Then, the thousand-eyed (Sahasrākṣa) Indra, pouring forth hundreds of thousands of immense rain torrents (literally: "of the measure of an axle"), heavily rained upon the Khāṇḍava fire.
असंप्राप्तास्तु ता धारास्तेजसा जातवेदसः ।
ख एव समशुष्यन्त न काश्चित्पावकं गताः ॥२०॥
20. asaṁprāptāstu tā dhārāstejasā jātavedasaḥ ,
kha eva samaśuṣyanta na kāścitpāvakaṁ gatāḥ.
20. asaṃprāptāḥ tu tāḥ dhārāḥ tejasā jātavedasaḥ
khaḥ eva samaśuṣyanta na kāścit pāvakam gatāḥ
20. However, those rain torrents, before reaching the ground, dried up completely in the sky itself due to the intense radiance of Agni (Jātavedas); not one of them reached the fire.
ततो नमुचिहा क्रुद्धो भृशमर्चिष्मतस्तदा ।
पुनरेवाभ्यवर्षत्तमम्भः प्रविसृजन्बहु ॥२१॥
21. tato namucihā kruddho bhṛśamarciṣmatastadā ,
punarevābhyavarṣattamambhaḥ pravisṛjanbahu.
21. tataḥ namucihā kruddhaḥ bhṛśam arciṣmataḥ tadā
punaḥ eva abhyavarṣat tam ambhaḥ pravisṛjan bahu
21. Then, the slayer of Namuci (Namucihā), greatly enraged at the radiant one (Arciṣmat / Agni), rained upon the fire once more, pouring forth abundant water.
अर्चिर्धाराभिसंबद्धं धूमविद्युत्समाकुलम् ।
बभूव तद्वनं घोरं स्तनयित्नुसघोषवत् ॥२२॥
22. arcirdhārābhisaṁbaddhaṁ dhūmavidyutsamākulam ,
babhūva tadvanaṁ ghoraṁ stanayitnusaghoṣavat.
22. arcirdhārābhisaṃbaddham dhūmavidyutsamākulam
babhūva tat vanam ghoram stanayitnusaghoṣavat
22. That terrible forest became connected with streams of flames, filled with smoke and lightning, and accompanied by the roar of thunder.
