युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
पितामहेशाय विभो नामान्याचक्ष्व शंभवे ।
बभ्रवे विश्वमायाय महाभाग्यं च तत्त्वतः ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
pitāmaheśāya vibho nāmānyācakṣva śaṁbhave ,
babhrave viśvamāyāya mahābhāgyaṁ ca tattvataḥ.

1. Yudhishthira said: "O mighty one, recount the names for the Lord of grandfathers (Śiva), for Śambhu, for Babhru, for Viśvamāya, and also truly his great glory (mahābhāgya)."
भीष्म उवाच ।
सुरासुरगुरो देव विष्णो त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ।
शिवाय विश्वरूपाय यन्मां पृच्छद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
surāsuraguro deva viṣṇo tvaṁ vaktumarhasi ,
śivāya viśvarūpāya yanmāṁ pṛcchadyudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca surāsuraguro deva viṣṇo tvam vaktum
arhasi śivāya viśvarūpāya yat mām pṛcchat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

surāsuraguro deva viṣṇo,
yat yudhiṣṭhiraḥ śivāya viśvarūpāya mām pṛcchat,
(tat) tvam vaktum arhasi.
2. Bhishma said: "O teacher (guru) of devas and asuras, O divine Viṣṇu, you are indeed qualified to speak about that which Yudhishthira has asked me concerning Śiva, who embodies the universal form."
नाम्नां सहस्रं देवस्य तण्डिना ब्रह्मयोनिना ।
निवेदितं ब्रह्मलोके ब्रह्मणो यत्पुराभवत् ॥३॥
3. nāmnāṁ sahasraṁ devasya taṇḍinā brahmayoninā ,
niveditaṁ brahmaloke brahmaṇo yatpurābhavat.
3. nāmnām sahasram devasya taṇḍinā brahmayoninā
niveditam brahmaloke brahmaṇaḥ yat purā abhavat
3. devasya nāmnām sahasram yat purā brahmaṇaḥ abhavat,
(tat) brahmayoninā taṇḍinā brahmaloke niveditam.
3. The thousand names of the God (Śiva), which were originally from Brahmā (brahman), were offered in Brahmaloka by the sage Tandi, who was also of Brahmā's origin.
द्वैपायनप्रभृतयस्तथैवेमे तपोधनाः ।
ऋषयः सुव्रता दान्ताः शृण्वन्तु गदतस्तव ॥४॥
4. dvaipāyanaprabhṛtayastathaiveme tapodhanāḥ ,
ṛṣayaḥ suvratā dāntāḥ śṛṇvantu gadatastava.
4. dvaipāyanaprabhṛtayaḥ tathā eva ime tapodhanāḥ
ṛṣayaḥ suvratāḥ dāntāḥ śṛṇvantu gadataḥ tava
4. ime tapodhanāḥ dvaipāyanaprabhṛtayaḥ tathā eva
suvratāḥ dāntāḥ ṛṣayaḥ tava gadataḥ śṛṇvantu
4. May these sages, rich in austerities (tapas), such as Dvaipāyana and others, who observe excellent vows and are self-controlled, listen to your discourse.
ध्रुवाय नन्दिने होत्रे गोप्त्रे विश्वसृजेऽग्नये ।
महाभाग्यं विभो ब्रूहि मुण्डिनेऽथ कपर्दिने ॥५॥
5. dhruvāya nandine hotre goptre viśvasṛje'gnaye ,
mahābhāgyaṁ vibho brūhi muṇḍine'tha kapardine.

mahābhāgyam vibho brūhi muṇḍine atha kapardine

5. O Lord, please declare the great glory (mahābhāgya) of Dhruva, of Nandin, of the Vedic ritual (yajña) priest, of the protector, of the creator of the universe, of Agni, and of Mundin and Kapardin.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
न गतिः कर्मणां शक्या वेत्तुमीशस्य तत्त्वतः ॥६॥
6. vāsudeva uvāca ,
na gatiḥ karmaṇāṁ śakyā vettumīśasya tattvataḥ.

śakyā vettum īśasya tattvataḥ
6. vāsudevaḥ uvāca īśasya karmaṇām
gatiḥ tattvataḥ vettum na śakyā
6. Vāsudeva said: The nature of the Lord (Īśa)'s actions (karma) cannot be truly known.
हिरण्यगर्भप्रमुखा देवाः सेन्द्रा महर्षयः ।
न विदुर्यस्य निधनमादिं वा सूक्ष्मदर्शिनः ।
स कथं नरमात्रेण शक्यो ज्ञातुं सतां गतिः ॥७॥
7. hiraṇyagarbhapramukhā devāḥ sendrā maharṣayaḥ ,
na viduryasya nidhanamādiṁ vā sūkṣmadarśinaḥ ,
sa kathaṁ naramātreṇa śakyo jñātuṁ satāṁ gatiḥ.
7. hiraṇyagarbhapramukhāḥ devāḥ saindrāḥ
maharṣayaḥ na viduḥ yasya nidhanam
ādim vā sūkṣmadarśinaḥ saḥ katham
naramātreṇa śakyaḥ jñātum satām gatiḥ
7. hiraṇyagarbhapramukhāḥ saindrāḥ devāḥ
maharṣayaḥ sūkṣmadarśinaḥ yasya
nidhanam vā ādim na viduḥ saḥ satām
gatiḥ naramātreṇa katham jñātum śakyaḥ
7. Even the gods, led by Hiraṇyagarbha, along with Indra, and the great sages, despite their subtle vision, do not know His beginning or end. How then can He, who is the refuge (gati) of the virtuous, be known by a mere human being?
तस्याहमसुरघ्नस्य कांश्चिद्भगवतो गुणान् ।
भवतां कीर्तयिष्यामि व्रतेशाय यथातथम् ॥८॥
8. tasyāhamasuraghnasya kāṁścidbhagavato guṇān ,
bhavatāṁ kīrtayiṣyāmi vrateśāya yathātatham.
8. tasya aham asuraghnasya kāṃścit bhagavataḥ guṇān
bhavatām kīrtayiṣyāmi vrateśāya yathātatham
8. aham bhavatām yathātatham kāṃścit guṇān tasya
bhagavataḥ asuraghnasya vrateśāya kīrtayiṣyāmi
8. I will faithfully recount to you some of the qualities of that divine Lord, the slayer of demons, for the sake of the lord of vows.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्गुणांस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
उपस्पृश्य शुचिर्भूत्वा कथयामास धीमतः ॥९॥
9. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā tu bhagavānguṇāṁstasya mahātmanaḥ ,
upaspṛśya śucirbhūtvā kathayāmāsa dhīmataḥ.
9. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tu bhagavān guṇān tasya
mahātmanaḥ upaspṛśya śuciḥ bhūtvā kathayāmāsa dhīmataḥ
9. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tu bhagavān upaspṛśya
śuciḥ bhūtvā tasya mahātmanaḥ guṇān dhīmataḥ kathayāmāsa
9. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, indeed, the divine Lord, after performing ablutions and becoming pure, narrated the qualities of that great-souled one to the wise (Janamejaya).
वासुदेव उवाच ।
शुश्रूषध्वं ब्राह्मणेन्द्रास्त्वं च तात युधिष्ठिर ।
त्वं चापगेय नामानि निशामय जगत्पतेः ॥१०॥
10. vāsudeva uvāca ,
śuśrūṣadhvaṁ brāhmaṇendrāstvaṁ ca tāta yudhiṣṭhira ,
tvaṁ cāpageya nāmāni niśāmaya jagatpateḥ.
10. vāsudevaḥ uvāca śuśrūṣadhvam brāhmaṇendrāḥ tvam ca tāta
yudhiṣṭhira tvam ca āpageya nāmāni niśāmaya jagatpateḥ
10. vāsudevaḥ uvāca brāhmaṇendrāḥ śuśrūṣadhvam ca tvam tāta
yudhiṣṭhira ca tvam āpageya jagatpateḥ nāmāni niśāmaya
10. Vasudeva said: "O foremost of Brahmins, listen attentively! And you, dear son Yudhishthira, and you, O son of the river (Bhishma), hear the names of the Lord of the universe."
यदवाप्तं च मे पूर्वं साम्बहेतोः सुदुष्करम् ।
यथा च भगवान्दृष्टो मया पूर्वं समाधिना ॥११॥
11. yadavāptaṁ ca me pūrvaṁ sāmbahetoḥ suduṣkaram ,
yathā ca bhagavāndṛṣṭo mayā pūrvaṁ samādhinā.
11. yat avāptam ca me pūrvam sāmbahetoḥ sudūṣkaram
yathā ca bhagavān dṛṣṭaḥ mayā pūrvam samādhinā
11. ca yat pūrvam me sāmbahetoḥ sudūṣkaram avāptam
ca yathā bhagavān mayā pūrvam samādhinā dṛṣṭaḥ
11. And that which was previously achieved by me, which was very difficult to accomplish, for Samba's sake; and also how the divine Lord was seen by me earlier through deep concentration (samādhi).
शम्बरे निहते पूर्वं रौक्मिणेयेन धीमता ।
अतीते द्वादशे वर्षे जाम्बवत्यब्रवीद्धि माम् ॥१२॥
12. śambare nihate pūrvaṁ raukmiṇeyena dhīmatā ,
atīte dvādaśe varṣe jāmbavatyabravīddhi mām.
12. śambare nihate pūrvam raukmiṇeyena dhīmatā
atīte dvādaśe varṣe jāmbavatī abravīt hi mām
12. pūrvam śambare dhīmatā raukmiṇeyena nihate
dvādaśe varṣe atīte jāmbavatī mām hi abravīt
12. Formerly, after Śambara was slain by the intelligent son of Rukmiṇī (Pradyumna), and twelve years had passed, Jāmbavatī indeed spoke to me.
प्रद्युम्नचारुदेष्णादीन्रुक्मिण्या वीक्ष्य पुत्रकान् ।
पुत्रार्थिनी मामुपेत्य वाक्यमाह युधिष्ठिर ॥१३॥
13. pradyumnacārudeṣṇādīnrukmiṇyā vīkṣya putrakān ,
putrārthinī māmupetya vākyamāha yudhiṣṭhira.
13. pradyumna-cārudeṣṇa-ādīn rukmiṇyā vīkṣya putrakān
putra-arthinī mām upetya vākyam āha yudhiṣṭhira
13. yudhiṣṭhira putra-arthinī rukmiṇyā pradyumna-cārudeṣṇa-ādīn
putrakān vīkṣya mām upetya vākyam āha
13. O Yudhiṣṭhira, desiring a son, and seeing Rukmiṇī's sons, Pradyumna, Cārudeṣṇa, and others, she approached me and spoke these words.
शूरं बलवतां श्रेष्ठं कान्तरूपमकल्मषम् ।
आत्मतुल्यं मम सुतं प्रयच्छाच्युत माचिरम् ॥१४॥
14. śūraṁ balavatāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ kāntarūpamakalmaṣam ,
ātmatulyaṁ mama sutaṁ prayacchācyuta māciram.
14. śūram balavatām śreṣṭham kānta-rūpam akalmaṣam
ātma-tulyam mama sutam prayaccha acyuta mā ciram
14. acyuta mama śūram balavatām śreṣṭham kānta-rūpam
akalmaṣam ātma-tulyam sutam prayaccha mā ciram
14. O Acyuta, grant me a heroic son, best among the strong, of beautiful form, flawless, and equal to yourself; do not delay!
न हि तेऽप्राप्यमस्तीह त्रिषु लोकेषु किंचन ।
लोकान्सृजेस्त्वमपरानिच्छन्यदुकुलोद्वह ॥१५॥
15. na hi te'prāpyamastīha triṣu lokeṣu kiṁcana ,
lokānsṛjestvamaparānicchanyadukulodvaha.
15. na hi te aprāpyam asti iha triṣu lokeṣu kiṃcana
lokān sṛjeḥ tvam aparān icchann yadukula-udvaha
15. yadukula-udvaha iha triṣu lokeṣu te kiṃcana
aprāpyam na hi asti tvam aparān lokān icchann sṛjeḥ
15. O upholder of the Yadu lineage, there is indeed nothing unobtainable for you here in the three worlds. You could create other worlds if you desired.
त्वया द्वादश वर्षाणि वायुभूतेन शुष्यता ।
आराध्य पशुभर्तारं रुक्मिण्या जनिताः सुताः ॥१६॥
16. tvayā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vāyubhūtena śuṣyatā ,
ārādhya paśubhartāraṁ rukmiṇyā janitāḥ sutāḥ.
16. tvayā dvādaśa varṣāṇi vāyubhūtena śuṣyatā
ārādhya paśubhartāram rukmiṇyā janitāḥ sutāḥ
16. tvayā vāyubhūtena śuṣyatā dvādaśa varṣāṇi
paśubhartāram ārādhya rukmiṇyā sutāḥ janitāḥ
16. After you, having become like air and wasting away for twelve years, worshipped the lord of creatures, sons were born to Rukmiṇī.
चारुदेष्णः सुचारुश्च चारुवेषो यशोधरः ।
चारुश्रवाश्चारुयशाः प्रद्युम्नः शंभुरेव च ॥१७॥
17. cārudeṣṇaḥ sucāruśca cāruveṣo yaśodharaḥ ,
cāruśravāścāruyaśāḥ pradyumnaḥ śaṁbhureva ca.
17. cārudeṣṇaḥ sucāruḥ ca cāruveṣaḥ yaśodharaḥ
cāruśravāḥ cāruyaśāḥ pradyumnaḥ śambhuḥ eva ca
17. cārudeṣṇaḥ sucāruḥ ca cāruveṣaḥ yaśodharaḥ
cāruśravāḥ cāruyaśāḥ pradyumnaḥ śambhuḥ eva ca
17. Cārudeṣṇa, Sucāru, Cāruveṣa, Yaśodhara, Cāruśravas, Cāruyaśas, Pradyumna, and also Śambhu.
यथा ते जनिताः पुत्रा रुक्मिण्याश्चारुविक्रमाः ।
तथा ममापि तनयं प्रयच्छ बलशालिनम् ॥१८॥
18. yathā te janitāḥ putrā rukmiṇyāścāruvikramāḥ ,
tathā mamāpi tanayaṁ prayaccha balaśālinam.
18. yathā te janitāḥ putrāḥ rukmiṇyāḥ cāruvikramāḥ
tathā mama api tanayam prayaccha balaśālinam
18. yathā te rukmiṇyāḥ cāruvikramāḥ putrāḥ janitāḥ
tathā mama api balaśālinam tanayam prayaccha
18. Just as those sons of Rukmiṇī, endowed with beautiful prowess, were born by you, so also grant me a powerful son.
इत्येवं चोदितो देव्या तामवोचं सुमध्यमाम् ।
अनुजानीहि मां राज्ञि करिष्ये वचनं तव ।
सा च मामब्रवीद्गच्छ विजयाय शिवाय च ॥१९॥
19. ityevaṁ codito devyā tāmavocaṁ sumadhyamām ,
anujānīhi māṁ rājñi kariṣye vacanaṁ tava ,
sā ca māmabravīdgaccha vijayāya śivāya ca.
19. iti evam coditaḥ devyā tām avocam
sumadhyamām anujānīhi mām rājñi
kariṣye vacanam tava sā ca mām
abravīt gaccha vijayāya śivāya ca
19. iti evam devyā coditaḥ tām
sumadhyamām avocam rājñi mām anujānīhi
tava vacanam kariṣye sā ca mām
abravīt vijayāya śivāya ca gaccha
19. Thus, urged by the goddess, I said to that slender-waisted one, 'O queen, permit me! I will carry out your command.' And she said to me, 'Go forth for victory and for welfare!'
ब्रह्मा शिवः काश्यपश्च नद्यो देवा मनोनुगाः ।
क्षेत्रौषध्यो यज्ञवाहाच्छन्दांस्यृषिगणा धरा ॥२०॥
20. brahmā śivaḥ kāśyapaśca nadyo devā manonugāḥ ,
kṣetrauṣadhyo yajñavāhācchandāṁsyṛṣigaṇā dharā.
20. brahmā śivaḥ kāśyapaḥ ca nadyaḥ devāḥ manonugāḥ
kṣetrāuṣadhyaḥ yajñavāhāḥ chandāṃsi ṛṣigaṇāḥ dharā
20. brahmā śivaḥ kāśyapaḥ ca nadyaḥ devāḥ manonugāḥ
kṣetrāuṣadhyaḥ yajñavāhāḥ chandāṃsi ṛṣigaṇāḥ dharā
20. Brahmā, Śiva, and Kaśyapa; the rivers; the deities who fulfill desires; the sacred fields and medicinal plants; the performers of Vedic rituals; the Vedic meters; the groups of sages; and the earth.
समुद्रा दक्षिणा स्तोभा ऋक्षाणि पितरो ग्रहाः ।
देवपत्न्यो देवकन्या देवमातर एव च ॥२१॥
21. samudrā dakṣiṇā stobhā ṛkṣāṇi pitaro grahāḥ ,
devapatnyo devakanyā devamātara eva ca.
21. samudrāḥ dakṣiṇāḥ stobhāḥ ṛkṣāṇi pitaraḥ grahāḥ
devapatnyaḥ devakanyāḥ devamātaraḥ eva ca
21. samudrāḥ dakṣiṇāḥ stobhāḥ ṛkṣāṇi pitaraḥ grahāḥ
devapatnyaḥ devakanyāḥ devamātaraḥ eva ca
21. The oceans; the sacrificial gifts (dakṣiṇā); the eulogistic chants; the constellations; the ancestors (pitaraḥ); the planets; the wives of the gods; the celestial maidens; and the mothers of the gods, indeed.
मन्वन्तराणि गावश्च चन्द्रमाः सविता हरिः ।
सावित्री ब्रह्मविद्या च ऋतवो वत्सराः क्षपाः ॥२२॥
22. manvantarāṇi gāvaśca candramāḥ savitā hariḥ ,
sāvitrī brahmavidyā ca ṛtavo vatsarāḥ kṣapāḥ.
22. manvantarāṇi gāvaḥ ca candramāḥ savitā hariḥ
sāvitrī brahmavidyā ca ṛtavaḥ vatsarāḥ kṣapāḥ
22. manvantarāṇi gāvaḥ ca candramāḥ savitā hariḥ
sāvitrī brahmavidyā ca ṛtavaḥ vatsarāḥ kṣapāḥ
22. The cosmic ages (manvantarāṇi); the cows; the Moon, the Sun, and Hari (Viṣṇu); Sāvitrī (the goddess); the knowledge of brahman (brahmavidyā); the seasons; the years; and the nights.
क्षणा लवा मुहूर्ताश्च निमेषा युगपर्ययाः ।
रक्षन्तु सर्वत्र गतं त्वां यादव सुखावहम् ।
अरिष्टं गच्छ पन्थानमप्रमत्तो भवानघ ॥२३॥
23. kṣaṇā lavā muhūrtāśca nimeṣā yugaparyayāḥ ,
rakṣantu sarvatra gataṁ tvāṁ yādava sukhāvaham ,
ariṣṭaṁ gaccha panthānamapramatto bhavānagha.
23. kṣaṇāḥ lavāḥ muhūrtāḥ ca nimeṣāḥ
yugaparyayāḥ rakṣantu sarvatra gatam
tvām yādava sukhāvaham ariṣṭam gaccha
panthānam apramattaḥ bhavān anagha
23. kṣaṇāḥ lavāḥ muhūrtāḥ ca nimeṣāḥ
yugaparyayāḥ sarvatra gatam sukhāvaham
tvām yādava rakṣantu anagha bhavān
apramattaḥ ariṣṭam panthānam gaccha
23. May the moments, the instants, the periods of forty-eight minutes, the winks of an eye, and the cycles of ages (yugaparyayāḥ) protect you, O Yādava, who are omnipresent and bring happiness. O sinless one, go forth on your path safely and vigilantly.
एवं कृतस्वस्त्ययनस्तयाहं तामभ्यनुज्ञाय कपीन्द्रपुत्रीम् ।
पितुः समीपे नरसत्तमस्य मातुश्च राज्ञश्च तथाहुकस्य ॥२४॥
24. evaṁ kṛtasvastyayanastayāhaṁ; tāmabhyanujñāya kapīndraputrīm ,
pituḥ samīpe narasattamasya; mātuśca rājñaśca tathāhukasya.
24. evam kṛta-svastyayanaḥ tayā aham
tām abhyanuñjñāya kapīndra-putrīm
pituḥ samīpe nara-sattamasya
mātuḥ ca rājñaḥ ca tathā āhukasya
24. evam aham tayā kṛta-svastyayanaḥ,
tām kapīndra-putrīm abhyanuñjñāya,
nara-sattamasya pituḥ ca mātuḥ ca rājñaḥ ca tathā āhukasya samīpe
24. Thus, having completed the auspicious rites with her, I then dismissed that daughter of the lord of monkeys. Subsequently, I approached the father, who was the foremost among men, along with the mother, the king, and Āhuka.
तमर्थमावेद्य यदब्रवीन्मां विद्याधरेन्द्रस्य सुता भृशार्ता ।
तानभ्यनुज्ञाय तदातिदुःखाद्गदं तथैवातिबलं च रामम् ॥२५॥
25. tamarthamāvedya yadabravīnmāṁ; vidyādharendrasya sutā bhṛśārtā ,
tānabhyanujñāya tadātiduḥkhā;dgadaṁ tathaivātibalaṁ ca rāmam.
25. tam artham āvedya yat abravīt mām
vidyādharendra-sya sutā bhṛśa-ārtā
tān abhyanuñjñāya tadā ati-duḥkhāt
gadam tathā eva ati-balam ca rāmam
25. bhṛśa-ārtā vidyādharendra-sya sutā yat mām abravīt,
tam artham āvedya,
tadā ati-duḥkhāt tān gadam ca tathā eva ati-balam rāmam ca abhyanuñjñāya
25. Having reported that matter which the extremely distressed daughter of the lord of the Vidyādharas had told me, I then dismissed both Gada and the exceedingly powerful Rāma, who were suffering greatly.
प्राप्यानुज्ञां गुरुजनादहं तार्क्ष्यमचिन्तयम् ।
सोऽवहद्धिमवन्तं मां प्राप्य चैनं व्यसर्जयम् ॥२६॥
26. prāpyānujñāṁ gurujanādahaṁ tārkṣyamacintayam ,
so'vahaddhimavantaṁ māṁ prāpya cainaṁ vyasarjayam.
26. prāpya anuñjñām guru-janāt aham tārkṣyam acintayam
saḥ avahat himavantam mām prāpya ca enam vyasarjayam
26. aham guru-janāt anuñjñām prāpya,
tārkṣyam acintayam.
saḥ mām himavantam avahat.
ca enam prāpya vyasarjayam.
26. Having obtained permission from the elders (guru), I meditated upon Tārkṣya (Garuḍa). He carried me to the Himalayas, and having reached there, I dismissed him.
तत्राहमद्भुतान्भावानपश्यं गिरिसत्तमे ।
क्षेत्रं च तपसां श्रेष्ठं पश्याम्याश्रममुत्तमम् ॥२७॥
27. tatrāhamadbhutānbhāvānapaśyaṁ girisattame ,
kṣetraṁ ca tapasāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ paśyāmyāśramamuttamam.
27. tatra aham adbhutān bhāvān apaśyam giri-sattame
kṣetram ca tapasām śreṣṭham paśyāmi āśramam uttamam
27. tatra aham giri-sattame adbhutān bhāvān apaśyam.
ca tapasām śreṣṭham kṣetram,
uttamam āśramam paśyāmi.
27. There, on that best of mountains, I saw wonderful phenomena. I also see a supreme area for austerities (tapas) and an excellent hermitage.
दिव्यं वैयाघ्रपद्यस्य उपमन्योर्महात्मनः ।
पूजितं देवगन्धर्वैर्ब्राह्म्या लक्ष्म्या समन्वितम् ॥२८॥
28. divyaṁ vaiyāghrapadyasya upamanyormahātmanaḥ ,
pūjitaṁ devagandharvairbrāhmyā lakṣmyā samanvitam.
28. divyam vaiyāghrapadyasya upamanyoḥ mahātmanaḥ
pūjitam devagandharvaiḥ brāhmyā lakṣmyā samanvitam
28. It is divine, belonging to the great-souled Upamanyu, son of Vyāghrapāda, revered by gods and celestial musicians (gandharvas), and endowed with spiritual (brāhmī) splendor.
धवककुभकदम्बनारिकेलैः कुरबककेतकजम्बुपाटलाभिः ।
वटवरुणकवत्सनाभबिल्वैः सरलकपित्थप्रियालसालतालैः ॥२९॥
29. dhavakakubhakadambanārikelaiḥ; kurabakaketakajambupāṭalābhiḥ ,
vaṭavaruṇakavatsanābhabilvaiḥ; saralakapitthapriyālasālatālaiḥ.

29. With Dhava, Kakubha, Kadamba, and Coconut trees; with Kurabaka, Ketaka, Jambu, and Pāṭalā plants; with Banyan, Varuṇaka, Vatsanābha, and Bilva trees; with Sarala, Kapittha, Priyāla, Sāla, and Tāla (palm) trees.
बदरीकुन्दपुन्नागैरशोकाम्रातिमुक्तकैः ।
भल्लातकैर्मधूकैश्च चम्पकैः पनसैस्तथा ॥३०॥
30. badarīkundapunnāgairaśokāmrātimuktakaiḥ ,
bhallātakairmadhūkaiśca campakaiḥ panasaistathā.

30. With Badarī, Kunda, Punnnāga, Aśoka, Mango, and Atimukta trees; with Bhallātaka, Madhūka, and Campaka trees, and also with Panasa (jackfruit) trees.
वन्यैर्बहुविधैर्वृक्षैः फलपुष्पप्रदैर्युतम् ।
पुष्पगुल्मलताकीर्णं कदलीषण्डशोभितम् ॥३१॥
31. vanyairbahuvidhairvṛkṣaiḥ phalapuṣpapradairyutam ,
puṣpagulmalatākīrṇaṁ kadalīṣaṇḍaśobhitam.
31. vanyaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ vṛkṣaiḥ phalapuspapradaiḥ
yutam puṣpagulmalatākīrṇam kadalīṣaṇḍaśobhitam
31. Endowed with many kinds of wild trees that bear fruits and flowers; covered with flowering bushes and creepers, and adorned with groves of plantains.
नानाशकुनिसंभोज्यैः फलैर्वृक्षैरलंकृतम् ।
यथास्थानविनिक्षिप्तैर्भूषितं वनराजिभिः ॥३२॥
32. nānāśakunisaṁbhojyaiḥ phalairvṛkṣairalaṁkṛtam ,
yathāsthānavinikṣiptairbhūṣitaṁ vanarājibhiḥ.

32. Adorned with trees whose fruits were enjoyed by various birds, and embellished by rows of trees placed in their proper positions.
रुरुवारणशार्दूलसिंहद्वीपिसमाकुलम् ।
कुरङ्गबर्हिणाकीर्णं मार्जारभुजगावृतम् ।
पूगैश्च मृगजातीनां महिषर्क्षनिषेवितम् ॥३३॥
33. ruruvāraṇaśārdūlasiṁhadvīpisamākulam ,
kuraṅgabarhiṇākīrṇaṁ mārjārabhujagāvṛtam ,
pūgaiśca mṛgajātīnāṁ mahiṣarkṣaniṣevitam.
33. ruru-vāraṇa-śārdūla-siṃha-dvīpi-samākulam
kuraṅga-barhiṇa ākīrṇam
mārjāra-bhujaga āvṛtam pūgaiḥ ca

33. It was teeming with ruru deer, elephants, tigers, lions, and leopards; densely populated by antelopes and peacocks; surrounded by cats and serpents; and frequented by groups of diverse animal species, including buffaloes and bears.
नानापुष्परजोमिश्रो गजदानाधिवासितः ।
दिव्यस्त्रीगीतबहुलो मारुतोऽत्र सुखो ववौ ॥३४॥
34. nānāpuṣparajomiśro gajadānādhivāsitaḥ ,
divyastrīgītabahulo māruto'tra sukho vavau.

34. Here, a pleasant breeze (māruta) blew, mingled with the pollen of diverse flowers, fragrant with the ichor of elephants, and filled with the songs of celestial women.
धारानिनादैर्विहगप्रणादैः शुभैस्तथा बृंहितैः कुञ्जराणाम् ।
गीतैस्तथा किंनराणामुदारैः शुभैः स्वनैः सामगानां च वीर ॥३५॥
35. dhārāninādairvihagapraṇādaiḥ; śubhaistathā bṛṁhitaiḥ kuñjarāṇām ,
gītaistathā kiṁnarāṇāmudāraiḥ; śubhaiḥ svanaiḥ sāmagānāṁ ca vīra.

35. O hero, [it was filled] with the roaring sounds of waterfalls, the melodies of birds, the auspicious trumpeting of elephants, the magnificent songs of the Kinnaras, and the sacred chants of the Sāma (Veda) singers.
अचिन्त्यं मनसाप्यन्यैः सरोभिः समलंकृतम् ।
विशालैश्चाग्निशरणैर्भूषितं कुशसंवृतम् ॥३६॥
36. acintyaṁ manasāpyanyaiḥ sarobhiḥ samalaṁkṛtam ,
viśālaiścāgniśaraṇairbhūṣitaṁ kuśasaṁvṛtam.
36. acintyam manasā api anyaiḥ sarobhiḥ samalaṅkṛtam
viśālaiḥ ca agniśaraṇaiḥ bhūṣitam kuśasaṃvṛtam
36. It was inconceivable even for others to grasp with their minds, embellished with numerous lakes, decorated with spacious fire-sanctuaries, and covered with kuśa grass.
विभूषितं पुण्यपवित्रतोयया सदा च जुष्टं नृप जह्नुकन्यया ।
महात्मभिर्धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठैर्महर्षिभिर्भूषितमग्निकल्पैः ॥३७॥
37. vibhūṣitaṁ puṇyapavitratoyayā; sadā ca juṣṭaṁ nṛpa jahnukanyayā ,
mahātmabhirdharmabhṛtāṁ variṣṭhai;rmaharṣibhirbhūṣitamagnikalpaiḥ.
37. vibhūṣitam puṇyapavitratoyayā sadā
ca juṣṭam nṛpa jahnukanyayā
mahātmabhiḥ dharmabhṛtām variṣṭhaiḥ
maharṣibhiḥ bhūṣitam agnikalpaiḥ
37. O King, it was adorned and always frequented by the daughter of Jahnu (the river Gangā), whose waters are sacred and pure. It was also graced by great souls, by the foremost among the upholders of natural law (dharma), and by great sages who shone like fire.
वाय्वाहारैरम्बुपैर्जप्यनित्यैः संप्रक्षालैर्यतिभिर्ध्याननित्यैः ।
धूमाशनैरूष्मपैः क्षीरपैश्च विभूषितं ब्राह्मणेन्द्रैः समन्तात् ॥३८॥
38. vāyvāhārairambupairjapyanityaiḥ; saṁprakṣālairyatibhirdhyānanityaiḥ ,
dhūmāśanairūṣmapaiḥ kṣīrapaiśca; vibhūṣitaṁ brāhmaṇendraiḥ samantāt.
38. vāyvāhāraiḥ ambupaiḥ japyānityaiḥ
saṃprakṣālaiḥ yatibhiḥ dhyānanityaiḥ
dhūmāśanaiḥ ūṣmapaiḥ kṣīrapaiḥ
ca vibhūṣitam brāhmaṇendraiḥ samantāt
38. It was adorned on all sides by excellent Brahmins, by ascetics subsisting on air, by those who drink only water, by those constantly engaged in chanting, by those who regularly purify themselves, by those ever absorbed in meditation (dhyāna), by those subsisting on smoke, by those who consume only warm vapor, and by those who drink only milk.
गोचारिणोऽथाश्मकुट्टा दन्तोलूखलिनस्तथा ।
मरीचिपाः फेनपाश्च तथैव मृगचारिणः ॥३९॥
39. gocāriṇo'thāśmakuṭṭā dantolūkhalinastathā ,
marīcipāḥ phenapāśca tathaiva mṛgacāriṇaḥ.
39. gocāriṇaḥ atha aśmakuṭṭāḥ dantolūkhālinaḥ tathā
marīcipāḥ phenapāḥ ca tathā eva mṛgacāriṇaḥ
39. Moreover, there were ascetics who grazed like cows, those who pounded their food with stones, and those who used their teeth as a mortar. Similarly, there were those who subsisted on sunbeams, those who drank only foam, and those who wandered like deer, living on wild plants.
सुदुःखान्नियमांस्तांस्तान्वहतः सुतपोन्वितान् ।
पश्यन्नुत्फुल्लनयनः प्रवेष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥४०॥
40. suduḥkhānniyamāṁstāṁstānvahataḥ sutaponvitān ,
paśyannutphullanayanaḥ praveṣṭumupacakrame.

paśyan utphullanayanaḥ praveṣṭum upacakrame
40. (saḥ) utphullanayanaḥ paśyan suduḥkhān tān tān

40. He, with wide-open eyes, seeing those extremely difficult observances, filled with intense asceticism (tapas), which were being carried out (by others), began to enter.
सुपूजितं देवगणैर्महात्मभिः शिवादिभिर्भारत पुण्यकर्मभिः ।
रराज तच्चाश्रममण्डलं सदा दिवीव राजन्रविमण्डलं यथा ॥४१॥
41. supūjitaṁ devagaṇairmahātmabhiḥ; śivādibhirbhārata puṇyakarmabhiḥ ,
rarāja taccāśramamaṇḍalaṁ sadā; divīva rājanravimaṇḍalaṁ yathā.

41. O Bhārata, O King, that collection of hermitages (āśramamaṇḍala), always revered by hosts of great-souled deities, by Śiva and others, and by those performing meritorious deeds, shone just like the disc of the sun in the sky.
क्रीडन्ति सर्पैर्नकुला मृगैर्व्याघ्राश्च मित्रवत् ।
प्रभावाद्दीप्ततपसः संनिकर्षगुणान्विताः ॥४२॥
42. krīḍanti sarpairnakulā mṛgairvyāghrāśca mitravat ,
prabhāvāddīptatapasaḥ saṁnikarṣaguṇānvitāḥ.

42. Mongooses play with snakes and tigers with deer, behaving like friends, imbued with the quality of closeness due to the influence of intense asceticism (tapas).
तत्राश्रमपदे श्रेष्ठे सर्वभूतमनोरमे ।
सेविते द्विजशार्दूलैर्वेदवेदाङ्गपारगैः ॥४३॥
43. tatrāśramapade śreṣṭhe sarvabhūtamanorame ,
sevite dvijaśārdūlairvedavedāṅgapāragaiḥ.

43. There, in that excellent hermitage ground (āśramapada), delightful to all creatures, it was frequented by eminent "dvijas" who were masters of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.
नानानियमविख्यातैरृषिभिश्च महात्मभिः ।
प्रविशन्नेव चापश्यं जटाचीरधरं प्रभुम् ॥४४॥
44. nānāniyamavikhyātairṛṣibhiśca mahātmabhiḥ ,
praviśanneva cāpaśyaṁ jaṭācīradharaṁ prabhum.

praviśan eva ca apaśyam jaṭācīradharam prabhum
44. aham praviśan eva ca nānāniyamavikhyātaiḥ ṛṣibhiḥ

44. Upon entering, I immediately saw the lord, wearing matted locks and bark garments, amidst great-souled sages who were renowned for their various strict observances.
तेजसा तपसा चैव दीप्यमानं यथानलम् ।
शिष्यमध्यगतं शान्तं युवानं ब्राह्मणर्षभम् ।
शिरसा वन्दमानं मामुपमन्युरभाषत ॥४५॥
45. tejasā tapasā caiva dīpyamānaṁ yathānalam ,
śiṣyamadhyagataṁ śāntaṁ yuvānaṁ brāhmaṇarṣabham ,
śirasā vandamānaṁ māmupamanyurabhāṣata.
45. tejasā tapasā ca eva dīpyamānam
yathā analam śiṣyamadhyagatam śāntam
yuvānam brāhmaṇarṣabham śirasā
vandamānam mām upamanyuḥ abhāṣata
45. upamanyuḥ tejasā tapasā ca eva

śirasā vandamānam mām abhāṣata
45. Upamanyu spoke to me, who was bowing my head, (he was) blazing with splendor and spiritual fervor (tapas) like fire, peaceful, young, the foremost among brahmins, and seated amidst his disciples.
स्वागतं पुण्डरीकाक्ष सफलानि तपांसि नः ।
यत्पूज्यः पूजयसि नो द्रष्टव्यो द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥४६॥
46. svāgataṁ puṇḍarīkākṣa saphalāni tapāṁsi naḥ ,
yatpūjyaḥ pūjayasi no draṣṭavyo draṣṭumicchasi.
46. svāgatam puṇḍarīkākṣa saphalāni tapāṃsi naḥ yat
pūjyaḥ pūjayasi naḥ draṣṭavyaḥ draṣṭum icchasi
46. puṇḍarīkākṣa svāgatam naḥ tapāṃsi saphalāni yat
pūjyaḥ naḥ pūjayasi draṣṭavyaḥ draṣṭum icchasi
46. Welcome, O lotus-eyed one! Our spiritual practices (tapas) have become fruitful, because you, who are worthy of worship, worship us, and though you are worthy of being seen, you desire to see us.
तमहं प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा मृगपक्षिष्वथाग्निषु ।
धर्मे च शिष्यवर्गे च समपृच्छमनामयम् ॥४७॥
47. tamahaṁ prāñjalirbhūtvā mṛgapakṣiṣvathāgniṣu ,
dharme ca śiṣyavarge ca samapṛcchamanāmayam.
47. tam aham prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā mṛgapakṣiṣu atha agniṣu
dharme ca śiṣyavarge ca samapṛccham anāmayam
47. aham prāñjaliḥ bhūtvā tam mṛgapakṣiṣu atha agniṣu
dharme ca śiṣyavarge ca anāmayam samapṛccham
47. Having folded my hands reverently, I then inquired of him about the well-being of the deer, the birds, the sacred fires, his constitution (dharma), and his group of disciples.
ततो मां भगवानाह साम्ना परमवल्गुना ।
लप्स्यसे तनयं कृष्ण आत्मतुल्यमसंशयम् ॥४८॥
48. tato māṁ bhagavānāha sāmnā paramavalgunā ,
lapsyase tanayaṁ kṛṣṇa ātmatulyamasaṁśayam.
48. tataḥ mām bhagavān āha sāmnā paramavalgūnā
lapsyase tanayam kṛṣṇa ātmatulyam asaṃśayam
48. tataḥ bhagavān mām paramavalgūnā sāmnā āha
kṛṣṇa tvam ātmatulyam tanayam asaṃśayam lapsyase
48. Then, the glorious Lord addressed me with extremely sweet and gentle words, saying, 'O Kṛṣṇa, you will undoubtedly obtain a son equal to yourself.'
तपः सुमहदास्थाय तोषयेशानमीश्वरम् ।
इह देवः सपत्नीकः समाक्रीडत्यधोक्षज ॥४९॥
49. tapaḥ sumahadāsthāya toṣayeśānamīśvaram ,
iha devaḥ sapatnīkaḥ samākrīḍatyadhokṣaja.
49. tapaḥ sumahat āsthāya toṣaya īśānam īśvaram
iha devaḥ sapatnīkaḥ samākrīḍati adhokṣaja
49. adhokṣaja,
(tvam) sumahat tapaḥ āsthāya īśānam īśvaram toṣaya.
iha devaḥ sapatnīkaḥ samākrīḍati.
49. O Adhokṣaja (Kṛṣṇa), having undertaken great austerity (tapas), you should please Īśāna, the supreme Lord. Here, the deity (Shiva) sports with his wife.
इहैव देवताश्रेष्ठं देवाः सर्षिगणाः पुरा ।
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण सत्येन च दमेन च ।
तोषयित्वा शुभान्कामान्प्राप्नुवंस्ते जनार्दन ॥५०॥
50. ihaiva devatāśreṣṭhaṁ devāḥ sarṣigaṇāḥ purā ,
tapasā brahmacaryeṇa satyena ca damena ca ,
toṣayitvā śubhānkāmānprāpnuvaṁste janārdana.
50. iha eva devatāśreṣṭham devāḥ
saṛṣigaṇāḥ purā tapasā brahmacaryeṇa
satyena ca damena ca toṣayitvā
śubhān kāmān prāpnuvan te janārdana
50. janārdana,
purā iha eva saṛṣigaṇāḥ devāḥ tapasā brahmacaryeṇa satyena ca damena ca devatāśreṣṭham toṣayitvā te śubhān kāmān prāpnuvan.
50. O Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), right here, in ancient times, the gods along with groups of sages, having pleased the most excellent of deities through austerity (tapas), celibacy (brahmacarya), truthfulness, and self-control, obtained their auspicious desires.
तेजसां तपसां चैव निधिः स भगवानिह ।
शुभाशुभान्वितान्भावान्विसृजन्संक्षिपन्नपि ।
आस्ते देव्या सहाचिन्त्यो यं प्रार्थयसि शत्रुहन् ॥५१॥
51. tejasāṁ tapasāṁ caiva nidhiḥ sa bhagavāniha ,
śubhāśubhānvitānbhāvānvisṛjansaṁkṣipannapi ,
āste devyā sahācintyo yaṁ prārthayasi śatruhan.
51. tejasām tapasām ca eva nidhiḥ saḥ
bhagavān iha śubhāśubhānvitān bhāvān
visṛjan saṃkṣipan api āste devyā
saha acintyaḥ yam prārthayasi śatruhan
51. śatruhan,
iha saḥ bhagavān tejasām tapasām ca eva nidhiḥ (asti).
śubhāśubhānvitān bhāvān visṛjan api saṃkṣipan (ca),
acintyaḥ (saḥ) devyā saha āste,
yam (tvam) prārthayasi.
51. O slayer of foes (śatruhan), that glorious Lord (bhagavān) is indeed the very treasure-house (nidhi) of splendors and austerities (tapas) here. He, the incomprehensible (acintya) one, abides here with the goddess, creating and also withdrawing all states of being (bhāva), both auspicious and inauspicious. He is the one whom you seek.
हिरण्यकशिपुर्योऽभूद्दानवो मेरुकम्पनः ।
तेन सर्वामरैश्वर्यं शर्वात्प्राप्तं समार्बुदम् ॥५२॥
52. hiraṇyakaśipuryo'bhūddānavo merukampanaḥ ,
tena sarvāmaraiśvaryaṁ śarvātprāptaṁ samārbudam.

tena sarvāmaraiśvaryam śarvāt prāptam samarbuda

52. Hiranyakashipu, who was a demon who made Mount Meru tremble, obtained from Śarva (Śiva) sovereignty over all the gods, enduring for a full arbuda (100 million) years.
तस्यैव पुत्रप्रवरो मन्दरो नाम विश्रुतः ।
महादेववराच्छक्रं वर्षार्बुदमयोधयत् ॥५३॥
53. tasyaiva putrapravaro mandaro nāma viśrutaḥ ,
mahādevavarācchakraṁ varṣārbudamayodhayat.

53. His own foremost son, renowned by the name Mandara, fought Indra for a hundred million years, by the boon of Mahadeva (Śiva).
विष्णोश्चक्रं च तद्घोरं वज्रमाखण्डलस्य च ।
शीर्णं पुराभवत्तात ग्रहस्याङ्गेषु केशव ॥५४॥
54. viṣṇoścakraṁ ca tadghoraṁ vajramākhaṇḍalasya ca ,
śīrṇaṁ purābhavattāta grahasyāṅgeṣu keśava.

54. O dear one, O Keśava (Keśava), formerly, that terrible discus of Viṣṇu and the thunderbolt of Ākhaṇḍala (Indra) were shattered upon the body of the demon.
अर्द्यमानाश्च विबुधा ग्रहेण सुबलीयसा ।
शिवदत्तवराञ्जघ्नुरसुरेन्द्रान्सुरा भृशम् ॥५५॥
55. ardyamānāśca vibudhā graheṇa subalīyasā ,
śivadattavarāñjaghnurasurendrānsurā bhṛśam.
55. ardyamānāḥ ca vibudhāḥ graheṇa subalīyasā
śivadattavarān jaghnuḥ asurendrān surāḥ bhṛśam

55. And the gods (vibudhāḥ), being tormented by the exceedingly powerful demon (graha), intensely slew the chief demons (asurendra) who had received boons from Śiva.
तुष्टो विद्युत्प्रभस्यापि त्रिलोकेश्वरतामदात् ।
शतं वर्षसहस्राणां सर्वलोकेश्वरोऽभवत् ।
ममैवानुचरो नित्यं भवितासीति चाब्रवीत् ॥५६॥
56. tuṣṭo vidyutprabhasyāpi trilokeśvaratāmadāt ,
śataṁ varṣasahasrāṇāṁ sarvalokeśvaro'bhavat ,
mamaivānucaro nityaṁ bhavitāsīti cābravīt.
56. tuṣṭaḥ vidyutprabhasya api trilokeśvaratām
adāt śatam varṣasahastrāṇām
sarvalokeśvaraḥ abhavat mama eva anucaraḥ
nityam bhavitā asi iti ca abravīt

56. Pleased, he bestowed upon Vidyutprabha the lordship of the three worlds. For a hundred thousand years, Vidyutprabha became the sovereign of all realms. And [the deity] said, "You shall always be my attendant."
तथा पुत्रसहस्राणामयुतं च ददौ प्रभुः ।
कुशद्वीपं च स ददौ राज्येन भगवानजः ॥५७॥
57. tathā putrasahasrāṇāmayutaṁ ca dadau prabhuḥ ,
kuśadvīpaṁ ca sa dadau rājyena bhagavānajaḥ.

57. And thus, the lord also granted ten thousand sons. Furthermore, the divine unborn one bestowed Kuśadvīpa as his kingdom.
तथा शतमुखो नाम धात्रा सृष्टो महासुरः ।
येन वर्षशतं साग्रमात्ममांसैर्हुतोऽनलः ।
तं प्राह भगवांस्तुष्टः किं करोमीति शंकरः ॥५८॥
58. tathā śatamukho nāma dhātrā sṛṣṭo mahāsuraḥ ,
yena varṣaśataṁ sāgramātmamāṁsairhuto'nalaḥ ,
taṁ prāha bhagavāṁstuṣṭaḥ kiṁ karomīti śaṁkaraḥ.
58. tathā śatamukhaḥ nāma dhātrā sṛṣṭaḥ
mahāsuraḥ yena varṣaśatam sāgram
ātmamāṃsaiḥ hutaḥ analaḥ tam prāha
bhagavān tuṣṭaḥ kim karomi iti śaṅkaraḥ
58. tathā nāma śatamukhaḥ mahāsuraḥ dhātrā
sṛṣṭaḥ yena sāgram varṣaśatam
ātmamāṃsaiḥ analaḥ hutaḥ tuṣṭaḥ bhagavān
śaṅkaraḥ tam prāha iti kim karomi
58. And in this manner, a great demon named Śatamukha was created by the Creator (Brahmā). By him, for more than a hundred years, a Vedic fire ritual (homa) was performed with his own flesh. To him, the pleased divine (bhagavān) Śaṅkara said, "What shall I do?"
तं वै शतमुखः प्राह योगो भवतु मेऽद्भुतः ।
बलं च दैवतश्रेष्ठ शाश्वतं संप्रयच्छ मे ॥५९॥
59. taṁ vai śatamukhaḥ prāha yogo bhavatu me'dbhutaḥ ,
balaṁ ca daivataśreṣṭha śāśvataṁ saṁprayaccha me.
59. tam vai śatamukhaḥ prāha yogaḥ bhavatu me adbhutaḥ
balam ca daivataśreṣṭha śāśvatam samprayaccha me

59. Indeed, Śatamukha said to him, "Let my spiritual discipline (yoga) be astonishing. And, O best of the gods, bestow upon me eternal, everlasting strength."
स्वायंभुवः क्रतुश्चापि पुत्रार्थमभवत्पुरा ।
आविश्य योगेनात्मानं त्रीणि वर्षशतान्यपि ॥६०॥
60. svāyaṁbhuvaḥ kratuścāpi putrārthamabhavatpurā ,
āviśya yogenātmānaṁ trīṇi varṣaśatānyapi.
60. svāyaṃbhuvaḥ kratuḥ ca api putrārtham abhavat
purā āviśya yogena ātmānam trīṇi varṣaśatāni api

60. In ancient times, Svayambhuva Kratu also performed penance for the sake of a son. Having entered his self by means of spiritual discipline (yoga), he continued (this practice) for even three hundred years.
तस्य देवोऽददत्पुत्रान्सहस्रं क्रतुसंमितान् ।
योगेश्वरं देवगीतं वेत्थ कृष्ण न संशयः ॥६१॥
61. tasya devo'dadatputrānsahasraṁ kratusaṁmitān ,
yogeśvaraṁ devagītaṁ vettha kṛṣṇa na saṁśayaḥ.
61. tasya devaḥ adadat putrān sahasram kratusaṃmitān
yogeśvaram devagītam vettha kṛṣṇa na saṃśayaḥ
61. devaḥ tasya sahasram kratusaṃmitān putrān adadat.
Kṛṣṇa,

na saṃśayaḥ.
61. The god gave him a thousand sons, each comparable in quality to (Kratu's) resolve. O Krishna, you know the Lord of spiritual discipline (yoga), praised by the gods; there is no doubt.
वालखिल्या मघवता अवज्ञाताः पुरा किल ।
तैः क्रुद्धैर्भगवान्रुद्रस्तपसा तोषितो ह्यभूत् ॥६२॥
62. vālakhilyā maghavatā avajñātāḥ purā kila ,
taiḥ kruddhairbhagavānrudrastapasā toṣito hyabhūt.
62. vālakhilyāḥ maghavatā avajñātāḥ purā kila | taiḥ
kruddhaiḥ bhagavān rudraḥ tapasā toṣitaḥ hi abhūt

62. Indeed, in ancient times, the Valakhilyas were disrespected by Indra. Those enraged (sages) indeed pleased the glorious Lord Rudra through their austerity (tapas).
तांश्चापि दैवतश्रेष्ठः प्राह प्रीतो जगत्पतिः ।
सुपर्णं सोमहर्तारं तपसोत्पादयिष्यथ ॥६३॥
63. tāṁścāpi daivataśreṣṭhaḥ prāha prīto jagatpatiḥ ,
suparṇaṁ somahartāraṁ tapasotpādayiṣyatha.
63. tān ca api daivataśreṣṭhaḥ prāha prītaḥ jagatpatiḥ
suparṇam somahartāram tapasā utpādayiṣyatha
63. ca api,
daivataśreṣṭhaḥ jagatpatiḥ prītaḥ tān prāha: "tapasā suparṇam somahartāram utpādayiṣyatha".
63. And to them, the Lord of the world, the chief of gods, being pleased, declared: 'Through your austerity (tapas), you shall produce Suparna (Garuda), the stealer of Soma.'
महादेवस्य रोषाच्च आपो नष्टाः पुराभवन् ।
ताश्च सप्तकपालेन देवैरन्याः प्रवर्तिताः ॥६४॥
64. mahādevasya roṣācca āpo naṣṭāḥ purābhavan ,
tāśca saptakapālena devairanyāḥ pravartitāḥ.
64. mahādevasya roṣāt ca āpaḥ naṣṭāḥ purā abhavan
tāḥ ca saptakapālena devaiḥ anyāḥ pravartitāḥ

64. Due to the anger of Mahadeva, the waters had previously been lost. These (waters) were then made to flow again by the gods using the seven Kapalas.
अत्रेर्भार्यापि भर्तारं संत्यज्य ब्रह्मवादिनी ।
नाहं तस्य मुनेर्भूयो वशगा स्यां कथंचन ।
इत्युक्त्वा सा महादेवमगच्छच्छरणं किल ॥६५॥
65. atrerbhāryāpi bhartāraṁ saṁtyajya brahmavādinī ,
nāhaṁ tasya munerbhūyo vaśagā syāṁ kathaṁcana ,
ityuktvā sā mahādevamagacchaccharaṇaṁ kila.
65. atreḥ bhāryā api bhartāram saṃtyajya
brahmavādinī na aham tasya muneḥ
bhūyaḥ vaśagā syām kathaṃcana iti uktvā
sā mahādevam agacchat śaraṇam kila
65. atreḥ bhāryā api brahmavādinī bhartāram

65. Atri's wife, a speaker of ultimate reality (brahman), abandoned her husband and said, "I will not, by any means, ever again be subject to that sage (muni)." Having spoken thus, she indeed went to Mahadeva for refuge.
निराहारा भयादत्रेस्त्रीणि वर्षशतान्यपि ।
अशेत मुसलेष्वेव प्रसादार्थं भवस्य सा ॥६६॥
66. nirāhārā bhayādatrestrīṇi varṣaśatānyapi ,
aśeta musaleṣveva prasādārthaṁ bhavasya sā.
66. nirāhārā bhayāt atreḥ trīṇi varṣaśatāni api
aśeta musaleṣu eva prasādārtham bhavasya sā
66. sā nirāhārā bhayāt atreḥ trīṇi varṣaśatāni

66. Out of fear of Atri, she remained without food for three hundred years, lying only on pestles, for the sake of Bhava's (Shiva's) grace.
तामब्रवीद्धसन्देवो भविता वै सुतस्तव ।
वंशे तवैव नाम्ना तु ख्यातिं यास्यति चेप्सिताम् ॥६७॥
67. tāmabravīddhasandevo bhavitā vai sutastava ,
vaṁśe tavaiva nāmnā tu khyātiṁ yāsyati cepsitām.
67. tām abravīt hasan devaḥ bhavitā vai sutaḥ tava
vaṃśe tava eva nāmnā tu khyātim yāsyati ca īpsitām
67. devaḥ hasan tām abravīt vai tava sutaḥ bhavitā tu

67. The god, smiling, said to her: "Indeed, a son will be born to you, and he will attain the desired fame in your very own lineage, named after you."
शाकल्यः संशितात्मा वै नव वर्षशतान्यपि ।
आराधयामास भवं मनोयज्ञेन केशव ॥६८॥
68. śākalyaḥ saṁśitātmā vai nava varṣaśatānyapi ,
ārādhayāmāsa bhavaṁ manoyajñena keśava.
68. śākalyaḥ saṃśitātmā vai nava varṣaśatāni
api ārādhyāmāsa bhavam manoyajñena keśava

68. O Keśava, the self-controlled (saṃśitātmā) Śākalya indeed worshipped Bhava for as long as nine hundred years through a mental Vedic ritual (yajña).
तं चाह भगवांस्तुष्टो ग्रन्थकारो भविष्यसि ।
वत्साक्षया च ते कीर्तिस्त्रैलोक्ये वै भविष्यति ।
अक्षयं च कुलं तेऽस्तु महर्षिभिरलंकृतम् ॥६९॥
69. taṁ cāha bhagavāṁstuṣṭo granthakāro bhaviṣyasi ,
vatsākṣayā ca te kīrtistrailokye vai bhaviṣyati ,
akṣayaṁ ca kulaṁ te'stu maharṣibhiralaṁkṛtam.
69. tam ca āha bhagavān tuṣṭaḥ granthakāraḥ
bhaviṣyasi vatsa akṣayā ca te kīrtiḥ
trailokye vai bhaviṣyati akṣayam ca
kulam te astu maharṣibhiḥ alaṅkṛtam
69. ca tuṣṭaḥ bhagavān tam āha vatsa tvaṃ
granthakāraḥ bhaviṣyasi ca te akṣayā
kīrtiḥ trailokye vai bhaviṣyati ca te
akṣayam kulam maharṣibhiḥ alaṅkṛtam astu
69. And the satisfied Lord (Bhagavān) said to him, "My dear child, you will become a renowned author. Your fame will truly be imperishable throughout the three worlds. Moreover, may your lineage also be imperishable and adorned by great sages."
सावर्णिश्चापि विख्यात ऋषिरासीत्कृते युगे ।
इह तेन तपस्तप्तं षष्टिं वर्षशतान्यथ ॥७०॥
70. sāvarṇiścāpi vikhyāta ṛṣirāsītkṛte yuge ,
iha tena tapastaptaṁ ṣaṣṭiṁ varṣaśatānyatha.
70. sāvarṇiḥ ca api vikhyātaḥ ṛṣiḥ āsīt kṛte yuge
iha tena tapaḥ taptam ṣaṣṭim varṣaśatāni atha
70. ca api sāvarṇiḥ kṛte yuge vikhyātaḥ ṛṣiḥ āsīt
atha tena iha ṣaṣṭim varṣaśatāni tapaḥ taptam
70. And Sāvarṇi was also a renowned sage in the Kṛta yuga. He performed severe austerities (tapas) here for six thousand years.
तमाह भगवान्रुद्रः साक्षात्तुष्टोऽस्मि तेऽनघ ।
ग्रन्थकृल्लोकविख्यातो भवितास्यजरामरः ॥७१॥
71. tamāha bhagavānrudraḥ sākṣāttuṣṭo'smi te'nagha ,
granthakṛllokavikhyāto bhavitāsyajarāmaraḥ.
71. tam āha bhagavān rudraḥ sākṣāt tuṣṭaḥ asmi te anagha
granthakṛt lokavikhyātaḥ bhavitā asi ajarāmaraḥ
71. anagha bhagavān rudraḥ tam āha sākṣāt te tuṣṭaḥ asmi
tvaṃ granthakṛt lokavikhyātaḥ ajarāmaraḥ bhavitā asi
71. The Lord Rudra (Bhagavān) said to him, "O sinless one, I am truly pleased with you. You will become an author, renowned throughout the world, and you will be free from old age and death."
मयापि च यथा दृष्टो देवदेवः पुरा विभुः ।
साक्षात्पशुपतिस्तात तच्चापि शृणु माधव ॥७२॥
72. mayāpi ca yathā dṛṣṭo devadevaḥ purā vibhuḥ ,
sākṣātpaśupatistāta taccāpi śṛṇu mādhava.
72. mayā api ca yathā dṛṣṭaḥ devadevaḥ purā vibhuḥ
sākṣāt paśupatiḥ tāta tat ca api śṛṇu mādhava
72. O dear Mādhava, listen also to how the all-pervading (vibhuḥ) Lord Paśupati, the God of gods, was seen by me directly in the past.
यदर्थं च महादेवः प्रयतेन मया पुरा ।
आराधितो महातेजास्तच्चापि शृणु विस्तरम् ॥७३॥
73. yadarthaṁ ca mahādevaḥ prayatena mayā purā ,
ārādhito mahātejāstaccāpi śṛṇu vistaram.
73. yat artham ca mahādevaḥ prayatena mayā purā
ārādhitaḥ mahātejāḥ tat ca api śṛṇu vistaram
73. And hear also in detail for what purpose the great and exceedingly glorious god (mahādeva) was worshipped by me with great effort in the past.
यदवाप्तं च मे पूर्वं देवदेवान्महेश्वरात् ।
तत्सर्वमखिलेनाद्य कथयिष्यामि तेऽनघ ॥७४॥
74. yadavāptaṁ ca me pūrvaṁ devadevānmaheśvarāt ,
tatsarvamakhilenādya kathayiṣyāmi te'nagha.
74. yat avāptam ca me pūrvam devadevāt maheśvarāt
tat sarvam akhilena adya kathayiṣyāmi te anagha
74. O sinless one, I shall narrate to you today in its entirety all that I obtained previously from Maheśvara, the God of gods.
पुरा कृतयुगे तात ऋषिरासीन्महायशाः ।
व्याघ्रपाद इति ख्यातो वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः ।
तस्याहमभवं पुत्रो धौम्यश्चापि ममानुजः ॥७५॥
75. purā kṛtayuge tāta ṛṣirāsīnmahāyaśāḥ ,
vyāghrapāda iti khyāto vedavedāṅgapāragaḥ ,
tasyāhamabhavaṁ putro dhaumyaścāpi mamānujaḥ.

75. O dear one, in the ancient Kṛta age, there was a highly renowned sage named Vyāghrapāda, who was proficient in the Vedas and their auxiliary sciences (Vedāṅgas). I was his son, and Dhaumya was my younger brother.
कस्यचित्त्वथ कालस्य धौम्येन सह माधव ।
आगच्छमाश्रमं क्रीडन्मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् ॥७६॥
76. kasyacittvatha kālasya dhaumyena saha mādhava ,
āgacchamāśramaṁ krīḍanmunīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām.
76. kasyacit tu atha kālasya dhaumyena saha mādhava
āgaccham āśramam krīḍan munīnām bhāvitātmanām
76. Then, O Madhava, after some time, I arrived, playing along with Dhaumya, at the hermitage of the sages (muni) with purified selves (ātman).
तत्रापि च मया दृष्टा दुह्यमाना पयस्विनी ।
लक्षितं च मया क्षीरं स्वादुतो ह्यमृतोपमम् ॥७७॥
77. tatrāpi ca mayā dṛṣṭā duhyamānā payasvinī ,
lakṣitaṁ ca mayā kṣīraṁ svāduto hyamṛtopamam.
77. tatra api ca mayā dṛṣṭā duhyamānā payasvinī
lakṣitam ca mayā kṣīram svādutaḥ hi amṛtopamam
77. And there too, I saw a milch cow being milked. And I observed that the milk, by its taste, was indeed like nectar.
ततः पिष्टं समालोड्य तोयेन सह माधव ।
आवयोः क्षीरमित्येव पानार्थमुपनीयते ॥७८॥
78. tataḥ piṣṭaṁ samāloḍya toyena saha mādhava ,
āvayoḥ kṣīramityeva pānārthamupanīyate.
78. tataḥ piṣṭam samāloḍya toyena saha mādhava
āvayoḥ kṣīram iti eva pānārtham upanīyate
78. Then, O Madhava, after mixing the ground meal with water, it was served to us two for drinking, presented as 'our milk'.
अथ गव्यं पयस्तात कदाचित्प्राशितं मया ।
ततः पिष्टरसं तात न मे प्रीतिमुदावहत् ॥७९॥
79. atha gavyaṁ payastāta kadācitprāśitaṁ mayā ,
tataḥ piṣṭarasaṁ tāta na me prītimudāvahat.
79. atha gavyam payaḥ tāta kadācit prāśitam mayā
tataḥ piṣṭarasam tāta na me prītim udāvahat
79. Now, O venerable sir, once I had tasted cow's milk, then, O venerable sir, the liquid meal brought me no joy.
ततोऽहमब्रुवं बाल्याज्जननीमात्मनस्तदा ।
क्षीरोदनसमायुक्तं भोजनं च प्रयच्छ मे ॥८०॥
80. tato'hamabruvaṁ bālyājjananīmātmanastadā ,
kṣīrodanasamāyuktaṁ bhojanaṁ ca prayaccha me.
80. tataḥ aham abruvam bālyāt jananīm ātmanaḥ tadā
kṣīrodanasamāyuktam bhojanam ca prayaccha me

80. Then, as a child, I said to my mother, "Please give me food consisting of milk-rice."
ततो मामब्रवीन्माता दुःखशोकसमन्विता ।
पुत्रस्नेहात्परिष्वज्य मूर्ध्नि चाघ्राय माधव ॥८१॥
81. tato māmabravīnmātā duḥkhaśokasamanvitā ,
putrasnehātpariṣvajya mūrdhni cāghrāya mādhava.
81. tataḥ mām abravīt mātā duḥkhaśokasamānvita
putrasnehāt pariṣvajya mūrdhni ca āghrāya mādhava

81. Then my mother, filled with sorrow and grief, embraced me and kissed my head out of maternal affection, and said, "O Mādhava."
कुतः क्षीरोदनं वत्स मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् ।
वने निवसतां नित्यं कन्दमूलफलाशिनाम् ॥८२॥
82. kutaḥ kṣīrodanaṁ vatsa munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām ,
vane nivasatāṁ nityaṁ kandamūlaphalāśinām.

82. O child, how can there be milk-rice for sages (muni) whose inner self (ātman) is cultivated, who constantly dwell in the forest, subsisting on roots, tubers, and fruits?
अप्रसाद्य विरूपाक्षं वरदं स्थाणुमव्ययम् ।
कुतः क्षीरोदनं वत्स सुखानि वसनानि च ॥८३॥
83. aprasādya virūpākṣaṁ varadaṁ sthāṇumavyayam ,
kutaḥ kṣīrodanaṁ vatsa sukhāni vasanāni ca.

vatsa kutaḥ kṣīrodanam sukhāni ca vasanāni
83. Without propitiating the odd-eyed one (Virūpākṣa), the giver of boons, the immovable (sthāṇu), and the imperishable one, O child, how can there be milk-rice, comforts, and clothes?
तं प्रपद्य सदा वत्स सर्वभावेन शंकरम् ।
तत्प्रसादाच्च कामेभ्यः फलं प्राप्स्यसि पुत्रक ॥८४॥
84. taṁ prapadya sadā vatsa sarvabhāvena śaṁkaram ,
tatprasādācca kāmebhyaḥ phalaṁ prāpsyasi putraka.

84. My child, always resort to Śaṅkara with your whole being. And, dear son, by his grace, you will obtain the results of your desires.
जनन्यास्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा तदाप्रभृति शत्रुहन् ।
मम भक्तिर्महादेवे नैष्ठिकी समपद्यत ॥८५॥
85. jananyāstadvacaḥ śrutvā tadāprabhṛti śatruhan ,
mama bhaktirmahādeve naiṣṭhikī samapadyata.

mama bhaktiḥ mahādeve naiṣṭhikī samapadyata

85. O slayer of enemies, having heard those words of my mother, from that time onwards, my firm devotion (bhakti) to Mahādeva developed.
ततोऽहं तप आस्थाय तोषयामास शंकरम् ।
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं तु पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रविष्ठितः ॥८६॥
86. tato'haṁ tapa āsthāya toṣayāmāsa śaṁkaram ,
divyaṁ varṣasahasraṁ tu pādāṅguṣṭhāgraviṣṭhitaḥ.
86. tataḥ aham tapaḥ āsthāya toṣayāmāsa śaṅkaram
divyam varṣasahasram tu pādāṅguṣṭhāgraviṣṭhitaḥ
86. tataḥ aham pādāṅguṣṭhāgraviṣṭhitaḥ tapaḥ āsthāya
divyam varṣasahasram tu śaṅkaram toṣayāmāsa
86. Thereupon, I undertook austerity (tapas) and pleased Śaṅkara, standing on the tip of my big toe for a divine thousand years.
एकं वर्षशतं चैव फलाहारस्तदाभवम् ।
द्वितीयं शीर्णपर्णाशी तृतीयं चाम्बुभोजनः ।
शतानि सप्त चैवाहं वायुभक्षस्तदाभवम् ॥८७॥
87. ekaṁ varṣaśataṁ caiva phalāhārastadābhavam ,
dvitīyaṁ śīrṇaparṇāśī tṛtīyaṁ cāmbubhojanaḥ ,
śatāni sapta caivāhaṁ vāyubhakṣastadābhavam.
87. ekam varṣaśatam ca eva phalāhāraḥ
tadā abhavam dvitīyam śīrṇaparṇāśī
tṛtīyam ca ambubhojanaḥ śatāni sapta
ca eva aham vāyubhakṣaḥ tadā abhavam

tṛtīyam ca ambubhojanaḥ ca eva
sapta śatāni vāyubhakṣaḥ tadā abhavam
87. For one hundred years I subsisted on fruits. For the second (hundred years), I subsisted on dry leaves, and for the third, I subsisted on water. And for seven hundred years, I then subsisted on air.
ततः प्रीतो महादेवः सर्वलोकेश्वरः प्रभुः ।
शक्ररूपं स कृत्वा तु सर्वैर्देवगणैर्वृतः ।
सहस्राक्षस्तदा भूत्वा वज्रपाणिर्महायशाः ॥८८॥
88. tataḥ prīto mahādevaḥ sarvalokeśvaraḥ prabhuḥ ,
śakrarūpaṁ sa kṛtvā tu sarvairdevagaṇairvṛtaḥ ,
sahasrākṣastadā bhūtvā vajrapāṇirmahāyaśāḥ.
88. tataḥ prītaḥ mahādevaḥ sarvalokeśvaraḥ
prabhuḥ śakrarūpam sa kṛtvā tu
sarvaiḥ devagaṇaiḥ vṛtaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ
tadā bhūtvā vajrapāṇiḥ mahāyaśāḥ
88. Then, the pleased Mahadeva, the mighty lord of all worlds, assumed the form of Indra (śakra). Surrounded by all the hosts of gods, he then became the thousand-eyed, thunderbolt-wielding, and very glorious (deity).
सुधावदातं रक्ताक्षं स्तब्धकर्णं मदोत्कटम् ।
आवेष्टितकरं रौद्रं चतुर्दंष्ट्रं महागजम् ॥८९॥
89. sudhāvadātaṁ raktākṣaṁ stabdhakarṇaṁ madotkaṭam ,
āveṣṭitakaraṁ raudraṁ caturdaṁṣṭraṁ mahāgajam.
89. sudhāvādātam raktākṣam stabdhakarṇam madotkaṭam
āveṣṭitakaram raudram caturdaṃṣṭram mahāgajam
89. (He appeared mounted on) a great elephant, white as nectar, with red eyes, stiff ears, intensely rutting, with a coiled trunk, formidable, and four-tusked.
समास्थितश्च भगवान्दीप्यमानः स्वतेजसा ।
आजगाम किरीटी तु हारकेयूरभूषितः ॥९०॥
90. samāsthitaśca bhagavāndīpyamānaḥ svatejasā ,
ājagāma kirīṭī tu hārakeyūrabhūṣitaḥ.

ājagāma kirīṭī tu hārakeyūrabhūṣitaḥ
90. And the glorious one (Mahadeva in Indra's form), mounted (on the great elephant) and shining with his own splendor, arrived. He, the crowned one, was adorned with necklaces and armlets.
पाण्डुरेणातपत्रेण ध्रियमाणेन मूर्धनि ।
सेव्यमानोऽप्सरोभिश्च दिव्यगन्धर्वनादितः ॥९१॥
91. pāṇḍureṇātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani ,
sevyamāno'psarobhiśca divyagandharvanāditaḥ.
91. pāṇḍureṇa ātapatreṇa dhriyamāṇena mūrdhani
sevyamānaḥ apsarobhiḥ ca divyagandharvanāditaḥ
91. While a white umbrella was held over his head, he was being served by Apsaras and resounded with the music of divine Gandharvas.
ततो मामाह देवेन्द्रः प्रीतस्तेऽहं द्विजोत्तम ।
वरं वृणीष्व मत्तस्त्वं यत्ते मनसि वर्तते ॥९२॥
92. tato māmāha devendraḥ prītaste'haṁ dvijottama ,
varaṁ vṛṇīṣva mattastvaṁ yatte manasi vartate.
92. tataḥ mām āha devendraḥ prītaḥ te aham dvijottama
varam vṛṇīṣva mattaḥ tvam yat te manasi vartate
92. tataḥ devendraḥ mām āha dvijottama aham te prītaḥ
tvam mattaḥ yat te manasi vartate varam vṛṇīṣva
92. Then the lord of gods said to me, "O best of brahmins, I am pleased with you. Request from me whatever boon is in your mind."
शक्रस्य तु वचः श्रुत्वा नाहं प्रीतमनाभवम् ।
अब्रुवं च तदा कृष्ण देवराजमिदं वचः ॥९३॥
93. śakrasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā nāhaṁ prītamanābhavam ,
abruvaṁ ca tadā kṛṣṇa devarājamidaṁ vacaḥ.
93. śakrasya tu vacaḥ śrutvā na aham prītamanā
abhavam abruvam ca tadā kṛṣṇa devarājam idam vacaḥ
93. tu śakrasya vacaḥ śrutvā aham na prītamanā
abhavam ca tadā kṛṣṇa devarājam idam vacaḥ abruvam
93. But having heard Indra's words, I was not pleased in mind. And then, O Krishna, I spoke these words to the king of gods.
नाहं त्वत्तो वरं काङ्क्षे नान्यस्मादपि दैवतात् ।
महादेवादृते सौम्य सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥९४॥
94. nāhaṁ tvatto varaṁ kāṅkṣe nānyasmādapi daivatāt ,
mahādevādṛte saumya satyametadbravīmi te.
94. na aham tvattaḥ varam kāṅkṣe na anyasmāt api
daivatāt mahādevāt ṛte saumya satyam etat bravīmi te
94. saumya aham tvattaḥ varam na kāṅkṣe na api anyasmāt
daivatāt mahādevāt ṛte etat satyam te bravīmi
94. "I do not desire a boon from you, nor even from any other deity, except from Mahadeva (Shiva), O gentle one. This truth I tell to you."
पशुपतिवचनाद्भवामि सद्यः कृमिरथ वा तरुरप्यनेकशाखः ।
अपशुपतिवरप्रसादजा मे त्रिभुवनराज्यविभूतिरप्यनिष्टा ॥९५॥
95. paśupativacanādbhavāmi sadyaḥ; kṛmiratha vā tarurapyanekaśākhaḥ ,
apaśupativaraprasādajā me; tribhuvanarājyavibhūtirapyaniṣṭā.

kṛmiḥ atha vā taruḥ api anekasākhaḥ

95. By the command of Paśupati (Shiva), I would immediately become a worm or even a many-branched tree. But even the splendor of dominion over the three worlds, if arising from the grace of someone other than Paśupati, is unwelcome to me.
अपि कीटः पतंगो वा भवेयं शंकराज्ञया ।
न तु शक्र त्वया दत्तं त्रैलोक्यमपि कामये ॥९६॥
96. api kīṭaḥ pataṁgo vā bhaveyaṁ śaṁkarājñayā ,
na tu śakra tvayā dattaṁ trailokyamapi kāmaye.
96. api kīṭaḥ pataṅgaḥ vā bhaveyam śaṅkarājñayā na
tu śakra tvayā dattam trailokyam api kāmaye
96. śakra tu śaṅkarājñayā api kīṭaḥ vā pataṅgaḥ
bhaveyam tvayā dattam trailokyam api na kāmaye
96. Even if I were to become an insect or a moth by the command of Śaṅkara, I would not, O Indra (śakra), desire even the three worlds given by you.
यावच्छशाङ्कशकलामलबद्धमौलिर्न प्रीयते पशुपतिर्भगवान्ममेशः ।
तावज्जरामरणजन्मशताभिघातैर्दुःखानि देहविहितानि समुद्वहामि ॥९७॥
97. yāvacchaśāṅkaśakalāmalabaddhamauli;rna prīyate paśupatirbhagavānmameśaḥ ,
tāvajjarāmaraṇajanmaśatābhighātai;rduḥkhāni dehavihitāni samudvahāmi.
97. yāvat śaśāṅkaśakalā amala baddhamouliḥ
na prīyate paśupatiḥ bhagavān mama
īśaḥ tāvat jarāmaraṇajanmaśatābhighātaiḥ
duḥkhāni dehavihitāni samudvahāmi
97. yāvat śaśāṅkaśakalā amala baddhamouliḥ
bhagavān mama īśaḥ paśupatiḥ na
prīyate tāvat dehavihitāni
jarāmaraṇajanmaśatābhighātaiḥ duḥkhāni samudvahāmi
97. As long as Lord Paśupati (paśupati), my divine master, whose head is adorned with a pure crescent moon, is not pleased, so long do I endure the sufferings caused by the body, afflicted by hundreds of impacts from old age, death, and rebirths (saṃsāra).
दिवसकरशशाङ्कवह्निदीप्तं त्रिभुवनसारमपारमाद्यमेकम् ।
अजरममरमप्रसाद्य रुद्रं जगति पुमानिह को लभेत शान्तिम् ॥९८॥
98. divasakaraśaśāṅkavahnidīptaṁ; tribhuvanasāramapāramādyamekam ,
ajaramamaramaprasādya rudraṁ; jagati pumāniha ko labheta śāntim.

98. Without propitiating the ageless, immortal, boundless, primal, unique Rudra, who is the essence of the three worlds and illuminated by the sun, moon, and fire, what man in this world can attain peace?
शक्र उवाच ।
कः पुनस्तव हेतुर्वै ईशे कारणकारणे ।
येन देवादृतेऽन्यस्मात्प्रसादं नाभिकाङ्क्षसि ॥९९॥
99. śakra uvāca ,
kaḥ punastava heturvai īśe kāraṇakāraṇe ,
yena devādṛte'nyasmātprasādaṁ nābhikāṅkṣasi.

yena devāt ṛte anyasmāt prasādam na abhikāṅkṣasi

99. Indra (śakra) said: "What indeed is your reason, regarding Īśa (īśa), the cause of all causes, by which you do not desire favor from any other deity apart from that deity (Īśa)?"
उपमन्युरुवाच ।
हेतुभिर्वा किमन्यैस्ते ईशः कारणकारणम् ।
न शुश्रुम यदन्यस्य लिङ्गमभ्यर्च्यते सुरैः ॥१००॥
100. upamanyuruvāca ,
hetubhirvā kimanyaiste īśaḥ kāraṇakāraṇam ,
na śuśruma yadanyasya liṅgamabhyarcyate suraiḥ.
100. upamanyuḥ uvāca | hetubhiḥ vā kim anyaiḥ te īśaḥ kāraṇa-kāraṇam
| na śuśruma yat anyasya liṅgam abhyarcyate suraiḥ
100. upamanyuḥ uvāca.
te anyaiḥ hetubhiḥ kim vā? īśaḥ kāraṇa-kāraṇam.
na śuśruma yat anyasya liṅgam suraiḥ abhyarcyate.
100. Upamanyu said: "What is the need for other arguments for you? The Lord is the cause of all causes. We have never heard that the emblem (liṅga) of anyone else is worshipped by the gods."
कस्यान्यस्य सुरैः सर्वैर्लिङ्गं मुक्त्वा महेश्वरम् ।
अर्च्यतेऽर्चितपूर्वं वा ब्रूहि यद्यस्ति ते श्रुतिः ॥१०१॥
101. kasyānyasya suraiḥ sarvairliṅgaṁ muktvā maheśvaram ,
arcyate'rcitapūrvaṁ vā brūhi yadyasti te śrutiḥ.
101. kasya anyasya suraiḥ sarvaiḥ liṅgam muktvā maheśvaram
| arcyate arcita-pūrvam vā brūhi yadi asti te śrutiḥ
101. suraiḥ sarvaiḥ maheśvaram muktvā kasya anyasya liṅgam arcyate vā arcita-pūrvam? yadi te śrutiḥ asti,
brūhi.
101. "By all the gods, whose emblem (liṅga) other than that of Maheśvara (Shiva) is worshipped, or has been worshipped before? Tell me if you have any such sacred tradition (śruti) or knowledge."
यस्य ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च त्वं चापि सह दैवतैः ।
अर्चयध्वं सदा लिङ्गं तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठतमो हि सः ॥१०२॥
102. yasya brahmā ca viṣṇuśca tvaṁ cāpi saha daivataiḥ ,
arcayadhvaṁ sadā liṅgaṁ tasmācchreṣṭhatamo hi saḥ.
102. yasya brahmā ca viṣṇuḥ ca tvam ca api saha daivataiḥ
| arcayadhvam sadā liṅgam tasmāt śreṣṭha-tamaḥ hi saḥ
102. yasya liṅgam brahmā ca viṣṇuḥ ca tvam ca api daivataiḥ saha sadā arcayadhvam,
tasmāt saḥ hi śreṣṭha-tamaḥ.
102. Since Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and you (Indra) together with all other deities always worship His emblem (liṅga), therefore, He is indeed the most supreme.
तस्माद्वरमहं काङ्क्षे निधनं वापि कौशिक ।
गच्छ वा तिष्ठ वा शक्र यथेष्टं बलसूदन ॥१०३॥
103. tasmādvaramahaṁ kāṅkṣe nidhanaṁ vāpi kauśika ,
gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā śakra yatheṣṭaṁ balasūdana.
103. tasmāt varam aham kāṅkṣe nidhanam vā api kauśika |
gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā śakra yathā-iṣṭam bala-sūdana
103. kauśika! tasmāt aham varam vā api nidhanam kāṅkṣe.
śakra bala-sūdana! yathā-iṣṭam gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā.
103. Therefore, O Kauśika (Indra), I desire a boon from Him, or even death (rather than worshipping anyone else). Go or stay, O Śakra (Indra), O Slayer of Bala, as you please.
काममेष वरो मेऽस्तु शापो वापि महेश्वरात् ।
न चान्यां देवतां काङ्क्षे सर्वकामफलान्यपि ॥१०४॥
104. kāmameṣa varo me'stu śāpo vāpi maheśvarāt ,
na cānyāṁ devatāṁ kāṅkṣe sarvakāmaphalānyapi.
104. kāmam eṣa varaḥ me astu śāpaḥ vā api maheśvarāt
na ca anyām devatām kāṅkṣe sarvakāmaphalāni api
104. kāmam eṣa varaḥ me astu vā api maheśvarāt śāpaḥ
ca anyām devatām na kāṅkṣe api sarvakāmaphalāni
104. Let this indeed be my boon, or even a curse from Maheśvara (Śiva). And I do not desire any other deity, nor even the fruits of all desires.
एवमुक्त्वा तु देवेन्द्रं दुःखादाकुलितेन्द्रियः ।
न प्रसीदति मे रुद्रः किमेतदिति चिन्तयन् ।
अथापश्यं क्षणेनैव तमेवैरावतं पुनः ॥१०५॥
105. evamuktvā tu devendraṁ duḥkhādākulitendriyaḥ ,
na prasīdati me rudraḥ kimetaditi cintayan ,
athāpaśyaṁ kṣaṇenaiva tamevairāvataṁ punaḥ.
105. evam uktvā tu devendram duḥkhāt
ākulita indriyaḥ na prasīdati me rudraḥ
kim etat iti cintayan atha apaśyam
kṣaṇena eva tam eva airāvatam punaḥ
105. duḥkhāt ākulita indriyaḥ evam
devendram uktvā me rudraḥ na prasīdati
etat kim iti cintayan atha kṣaṇena
eva tam eva airāvatam punaḥ apaśyam
105. Having spoken thus to Indra, his senses agitated by sorrow, he thought, 'Rudra (Śiva) is not pleased with me; what is happening?' Then, in that very moment, I saw Airāvata again.
हंसकुन्देन्दुसदृशं मृणालकुमुदप्रभम् ।
वृषरूपधरं साक्षात्क्षीरोदमिव सागरम् ॥१०६॥
106. haṁsakundendusadṛśaṁ mṛṇālakumudaprabham ,
vṛṣarūpadharaṁ sākṣātkṣīrodamiva sāgaram.
106. haṃsakundendusadṛśam mṛṇālakumudaprabham
vṛṣarūpadharam sākṣāt kṣīrodam iva sāgaram
106. haṃsakundendusadṛśam mṛṇālakumudaprabham
vṛṣarūpadharam sākṣāt kṣīrodam iva sāgaram
106. He was like a swan, a jasmine flower, and the moon; radiant like a lotus stalk and a water lily. Directly, he bore the form of a bull, appearing like the milky ocean itself.
कृष्णपुच्छं महाकायं मधुपिङ्गललोचनम् ।
जाम्बूनदेन दाम्ना च सर्वतः समलंकृतम् ॥१०७॥
107. kṛṣṇapucchaṁ mahākāyaṁ madhupiṅgalalocanam ,
jāmbūnadena dāmnā ca sarvataḥ samalaṁkṛtam.
107. kṛṣṇapuccham mahākāyam madhupiṅgalalocanam
jāmbūnadena dāmnā ca sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtam
107. kṛṣṇapuccham mahākāyam madhupiṅgalalocanam
ca jāmbūnadena dāmnā sarvataḥ samalaṅkṛtam
107. It had a black tail, a gigantic body, and honey-yellow eyes. And it was well-adorned everywhere with chains of Jāmbūnada gold.
रक्ताक्षं सुमहानासं सुकर्णं सुकटीतटम् ।
सुपार्श्वं विपुलस्कन्धं सुरूपं चारुदर्शनम् ॥१०८॥
108. raktākṣaṁ sumahānāsaṁ sukarṇaṁ sukaṭītaṭam ,
supārśvaṁ vipulaskandhaṁ surūpaṁ cārudarśanam.
108. raktākṣam sumahānāsam sukarṇam sukaṭītaṭam
supārśvam vipulaskandham surūpam cārudarśanam
108. Having blood-red eyes, a very large nose, beautiful ears, handsome hips, lovely flanks, broad shoulders, a pleasing form, and an attractive appearance.
ककुदं तस्य चाभाति स्कन्धमापूर्य विष्ठितम् ।
तुषारगिरिकूटाभं सिताभ्रशिखरोपमम् ॥१०९॥
109. kakudaṁ tasya cābhāti skandhamāpūrya viṣṭhitam ,
tuṣāragirikūṭābhaṁ sitābhraśikharopamam.
109. kakudam tasya ca ābhāti skandham āpūrya
viṣṭhitam tuṣāragirikūṭābham sitābhraśikharopamam
109. And his hump shines, positioned to completely cover his shoulders, resembling the peak of a snowy mountain and the summit of a white cloud.
तमास्थितश्च भगवान्देवदेवः सहोमया ।
अशोभत महादेवः पौर्णमास्यामिवोडुराट् ॥११०॥
110. tamāsthitaśca bhagavāndevadevaḥ sahomayā ,
aśobhata mahādevaḥ paurṇamāsyāmivoḍurāṭ.
110. tam āsthitaḥ ca bhagavān devadevaḥ sahaumayā
aśobhata mahādevaḥ paurṇamāsyām iva uḍurāṭ
110. And the divine Lord, the God of gods (Mahādeva), situated upon him with Umā, shone like the moon on a full moon night.
तस्य तेजोभवो वह्निः समेघः स्तनयित्नुमान् ।
सहस्रमिव सूर्याणां सर्वमावृत्य तिष्ठति ॥१११॥
111. tasya tejobhavo vahniḥ sameghaḥ stanayitnumān ,
sahasramiva sūryāṇāṁ sarvamāvṛtya tiṣṭhati.
111. tasya tejobhavaḥ vahniḥ sameghaḥ stanayitnumān
sahasram iva sūryāṇām sarvam āvṛtya tiṣṭhati
111. From his splendor, a fire (vahni) arises, accompanied by clouds and thunder, which stands encompassing everything, like a thousand suns.
ईश्वरः सुमहातेजाः संवर्तक इवानलः ।
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि दिधक्षुरिव चोद्यतः ॥११२॥
112. īśvaraḥ sumahātejāḥ saṁvartaka ivānalaḥ ,
yugānte sarvabhūtāni didhakṣuriva codyataḥ.
112. īśvaraḥ sumahātejāḥ saṃvartakaḥ iva analaḥ
yugānte sarvabhūtāni didhakṣuḥ iva codyataḥ
112. īśvaraḥ sumahātejāḥ yugānte saṃvartakaḥ analaḥ
iva sarvabhūtāni didhakṣuḥ iva codyataḥ
112. The supreme lord (īśvara), exceedingly brilliant, was like the fire of dissolution at the end of an eon, ready as if impelled to burn all beings.
तेजसा तु तदा व्याप्ते दुर्निरीक्ष्ये समन्ततः ।
पुनरुद्विग्नहृदयः किमेतदिति चिन्तयम् ॥११३॥
113. tejasā tu tadā vyāpte durnirīkṣye samantataḥ ,
punarudvignahṛdayaḥ kimetaditi cintayam.

punaḥ udvignahṛdayaḥ kim etat iti cintayam

113. But then, with that splendor having spread everywhere and being difficult to behold, he became distressed at heart again, thinking, "What is this?"
मुहूर्तमिव तत्तेजो व्याप्य सर्वा दिशो दश ।
प्रशान्तं च क्षणेनैव देवदेवस्य मायया ॥११४॥
114. muhūrtamiva tattejo vyāpya sarvā diśo daśa ,
praśāntaṁ ca kṣaṇenaiva devadevasya māyayā.

114. That brilliance, after pervading all ten directions for a moment, subsided in an instant due to the divine power (māyā) of the God of gods.
अथापश्यं स्थितं स्थाणुं भगवन्तं महेश्वरम् ।
सौरभेयगतं सौम्यं विधूममिव पावकम् ।
सहितं चारुसर्वाङ्ग्या पार्वत्या परमेश्वरम् ॥११५॥
115. athāpaśyaṁ sthitaṁ sthāṇuṁ bhagavantaṁ maheśvaram ,
saurabheyagataṁ saumyaṁ vidhūmamiva pāvakam ,
sahitaṁ cārusarvāṅgyā pārvatyā parameśvaram.

115. Then I saw the immovable one (sthāṇu), the divine (bhagavant), the great lord (maheśvara), mounted on a bull, gentle like a smokeless fire, the supreme lord, accompanied by Pārvatī of beautiful limbs.
नीलकण्ठं महात्मानमसक्तं तेजसां निधिम् ।
अष्टादशभुजं स्थाणुं सर्वाभरणभूषितम् ॥११६॥
116. nīlakaṇṭhaṁ mahātmānamasaktaṁ tejasāṁ nidhim ,
aṣṭādaśabhujaṁ sthāṇuṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitam.

116. He is blue-throated, great-souled, unattached, a reservoir of splendors, eighteen-armed, unmoving (sthāṇu), and adorned with all ornaments.
शुक्लाम्बरधरं देवं शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनम् ।
शुक्लध्वजमनाधृष्यं शुक्लयज्ञोपवीतिनम् ॥११७॥
117. śuklāmbaradharaṁ devaṁ śuklamālyānulepanam ,
śukladhvajamanādhṛṣyaṁ śuklayajñopavītinam.

117. He is a god wearing white garments, adorned with white garlands and ointments, bearing a white banner, unassailable, and wearing a white sacred thread (yajñopavīta).
गायद्भिर्नृत्यमानैश्च उत्पतद्भिरितस्ततः ।
वृतं पारिषदैर्दिव्यैरात्मतुल्यपराक्रमैः ॥११८॥
118. gāyadbhirnṛtyamānaiśca utpatadbhiritastataḥ ,
vṛtaṁ pāriṣadairdivyairātmatulyaparākramaiḥ.

118. He is surrounded by divine attendants whose prowess is equal to his own, who are singing, dancing, and leaping about here and there.
बालेन्दुमुकुटं पाण्डुं शरच्चन्द्रमिवोदितम् ।
त्रिभिर्नेत्रैः कृतोद्द्योतं त्रिभिः सूर्यैरिवोदितैः ॥११९॥
119. bālendumukuṭaṁ pāṇḍuṁ śaraccandramivoditam ,
tribhirnetraiḥ kṛtoddyotaṁ tribhiḥ sūryairivoditaiḥ.

119. Crowned with the crescent moon, pale-white like the risen autumn moon, and made radiant by three eyes, as if by three risen suns.
अशोभत च देवस्य माला गात्रे सितप्रभे ।
जातरूपमयैः पद्मैर्ग्रथिता रत्नभूषिता ॥१२०॥
120. aśobhata ca devasya mālā gātre sitaprabhe ,
jātarūpamayaiḥ padmairgrathitā ratnabhūṣitā.

120. And a garland, woven with golden lotuses and adorned with jewels, looked beautiful on the radiant, white body of the deity.
मूर्तिमन्ति तथास्त्राणि सर्वतेजोमयानि च ।
मया दृष्टानि गोविन्द भवस्यामिततेजसः ॥१२१॥
121. mūrtimanti tathāstrāṇi sarvatejomayāni ca ,
mayā dṛṣṭāni govinda bhavasyāmitatejasaḥ.

121. O Govinda, I saw the embodied weapons, which consisted of all divine radiance, belonging to Bhava, whose splendor is immeasurable.
इन्द्रायुधसहस्राभं धनुस्तस्य महात्मनः ।
पिनाकमिति विख्यातं स च वै पन्नगो महान् ॥१२२॥
122. indrāyudhasahasrābhaṁ dhanustasya mahātmanaḥ ,
pinākamiti vikhyātaṁ sa ca vai pannago mahān.

122. The bow of that great being, famous as Pinaka, resembled a thousand rainbows. And indeed, there was also that great serpent.
सप्तशीर्षो महाकायस्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रो विषोल्बणः ।
ज्यावेष्टितमहाग्रीवः स्थितः पुरुषविग्रहः ॥१२३॥
123. saptaśīrṣo mahākāyastīkṣṇadaṁṣṭro viṣolbaṇaḥ ,
jyāveṣṭitamahāgrīvaḥ sthitaḥ puruṣavigrahaḥ.

123. Seven-headed, gigantic, sharp-fanged, and exceedingly venomous; its great neck was encircled by a bowstring, and it stood in the form of a person (puruṣa).
शरश्च सूर्यसंकाशः कालानलसमद्युतिः ।
यत्तदस्त्रं महाघोरं दिव्यं पाशुपतं महत् ॥१२४॥
124. śaraśca sūryasaṁkāśaḥ kālānalasamadyutiḥ ,
yattadastraṁ mahāghoraṁ divyaṁ pāśupataṁ mahat.

124. The exceedingly dreadful, divine, great Pasupata weapon, which was like an arrow, shone like the sun and possessed the radiance of the fire of destruction (kālānala).
अद्वितीयमनिर्देश्यं सर्वभूतभयावहम् ।
सस्फुलिङ्गं महाकायं विसृजन्तमिवानलम् ॥१२५॥
125. advitīyamanirdeśyaṁ sarvabhūtabhayāvaham ,
sasphuliṅgaṁ mahākāyaṁ visṛjantamivānalam.

125. It was unequalled, indescribable, and terrifying to all beings; it had a huge, sparkling form, as if emitting fire.
एकपादं महादंष्ट्रं सहस्रशिरसोदरम् ।
सहस्रभुजजिह्वाक्षमुद्गिरन्तमिवानलम् ॥१२६॥
126. ekapādaṁ mahādaṁṣṭraṁ sahasraśirasodaram ,
sahasrabhujajihvākṣamudgirantamivānalam.

126. It had a single foot, great fangs, a thousand heads and bellies, a thousand arms, tongues, and eyes, as if vomiting forth fire.
ब्राह्मान्नारायणादैन्द्रादाग्नेयादपि वारुणात् ।
यद्विशिष्टं महाबाहो सर्वशस्त्रविघातनम् ॥१२७॥
127. brāhmānnārāyaṇādaindrādāgneyādapi vāruṇāt ,
yadviśiṣṭaṁ mahābāho sarvaśastravighātanam.
127. brāhmāt nārāyaṇāt aindrāt āgneyāt api vāruṇāt
yat viśiṣṭam mahābāho sarvaśastravighātanām

127. O mighty-armed one, that which is superior to the weapons of Brahma, of Narayana, of Indra, of Agni, and even of Varuna, is the destroyer of all weapons.
येन तत्त्रिपुरं दग्ध्वा क्षणाद्भस्मीकृतं पुरा ।
शरेणैकेन गोविन्द महादेवेन लीलया ॥१२८॥
128. yena tattripuraṁ dagdhvā kṣaṇādbhasmīkṛtaṁ purā ,
śareṇaikena govinda mahādevena līlayā.

128. O Govinda, that Triple City was formerly burned down and reduced to ashes in a moment by Mahādeva, who used a single arrow playfully.
निर्ददाह जगत्कृत्स्नं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ।
महेश्वरभुजोत्सृष्टं निमेषार्धान्न संशयः ॥१२९॥
129. nirdadāha jagatkṛtsnaṁ trailokyaṁ sacarācaram ,
maheśvarabhujotsṛṣṭaṁ nimeṣārdhānna saṁśayaḥ.
129. nirdadāha jagat kṛtsnam trailokyam sa-carācaram
maheśvara-bhuja-utsṛṣṭam nimeṣa-ardhāt na saṃśayaḥ
129. saṃśayaḥ na nirdadāha kṛtsnam jagat sa-carācaram
trailokyam maheśvara-bhuja-utsṛṣṭam nimeṣa-ardhāt
129. Without a doubt, he (Maheśvara) completely burned the entire world - the three worlds, including all moving and non-moving beings - in half a blink, with the weapon released by his arm.
नावध्यो यस्य लोकेऽस्मिन्ब्रह्मविष्णुसुरेष्वपि ।
तदहं दृष्टवांस्तात आश्चर्याद्भुतमुत्तमम् ॥१३०॥
130. nāvadhyo yasya loke'sminbrahmaviṣṇusureṣvapi ,
tadahaṁ dṛṣṭavāṁstāta āścaryādbhutamuttamam.
130. na avadhyaḥ yasya loke asmin brahma-viṣṇu-sureṣu
api tat aham dṛṣṭavān tāta āścaryādbhutam uttamam
130. tāta aham tat uttamam āścaryādbhutam dṛṣṭavān yasya
asmin loke brahma-viṣṇu-sureṣu api na avadhyaḥ
130. O dear one, I have witnessed that supreme and astonishing (weapon), by which no one in this world - not even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, or the other gods - is invulnerable.
गुह्यमस्त्रं परं चापि तत्तुल्याधिकमेव वा ।
यत्तच्छूलमिति ख्यातं सर्वलोकेषु शूलिनः ॥१३१॥
131. guhyamastraṁ paraṁ cāpi tattulyādhikameva vā ,
yattacchūlamiti khyātaṁ sarvalokeṣu śūlinaḥ.
131. guhyam astram param ca api tat-tulya-adhikam eva
vā yat tat śūlam iti khyātam sarva-lokeṣu śūlinaḥ
131. ca api guhyam param astram vā eva tat-tulya-adhikam
yat tat śūlinaḥ śūlam iti sarva-lokeṣu khyātam
131. Moreover, it is a supreme and secret weapon, or even one that is equal to or greater than that (which was just described). That (weapon) is known as the Trident (śūla) in all worlds, belonging to the Wielder of the Trident (śūlin).
दारयेद्यन्महीं कृत्स्नां शोषयेद्वा महोदधिम् ।
संहरेद्वा जगत्कृत्स्नं विसृष्टं शूलपाणिना ॥१३२॥
132. dārayedyanmahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ śoṣayedvā mahodadhim ,
saṁharedvā jagatkṛtsnaṁ visṛṣṭaṁ śūlapāṇinā.
132. dārayet yat mahīm kṛtsnām śoṣayet vā mahodadhim
saṃharet vā jagat kṛtsnam visṛṣṭam śūlapāṇinā
132. yat kṛtsnām mahīm dārayet vā mahodadhim śoṣayet
vā śūlapāṇinā visṛṣṭam kṛtsnam jagat saṃharet
132. It could tear apart the entire earth, or dry up the great ocean, or even destroy the whole world created by Śiva, the trident-wielder.
यौवनाश्वो हतो येन मांधाता सबलः पुरा ।
चक्रवर्ती महातेजास्त्रिलोकविजयी नृपः ॥१३३॥
133. yauvanāśvo hato yena māṁdhātā sabalaḥ purā ,
cakravartī mahātejāstrilokavijayī nṛpaḥ.

133. In ancient times, the greatly effulgent emperor Māndhātā, son of Yauvanāśva and conqueror of the three worlds, was killed by him (Lavana) along with his army.
महाबलो महावीर्यः शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमः ।
करस्थेनैव गोविन्द लवणस्येह रक्षसः ॥१३४॥
134. mahābalo mahāvīryaḥ śakratulyaparākramaḥ ,
karasthenaiva govinda lavaṇasyeha rakṣasaḥ.

karasthena eva govinda lavaṇasya iha rakṣasaḥ

134. O Govinda, this demon Lavana, who is of great strength, great valor, and has prowess equal to Indra, wields that (trident) which is held right in his hand.
तच्छूलमतितीक्ष्णाग्रं सुभीमं लोमहर्षणम् ।
त्रिशिखां भ्रुकुटीं कृत्वा तर्जमानमिव स्थितम् ॥१३५॥
135. tacchūlamatitīkṣṇāgraṁ subhīmaṁ lomaharṣaṇam ,
triśikhāṁ bhrukuṭīṁ kṛtvā tarjamānamiva sthitam.
135. tat śūlam atitīkṣṇāgram subhīmam lomaharṣaṇam
triśikhām bhrukuṭīm kṛtvā tarjamānam iva sthitam

135. That trident, with an extremely sharp point, very dreadful, and horrifying, stands as if threatening, having formed a three-pronged frown.
विधूमं सार्चिषं कृष्णं कालसूर्यमिवोदितम् ।
सर्पहस्तमनिर्देश्यं पाशहस्तमिवान्तकम् ।
दृष्टवानस्मि गोविन्द तदस्त्रं रुद्रसंनिधौ ॥१३६॥
136. vidhūmaṁ sārciṣaṁ kṛṣṇaṁ kālasūryamivoditam ,
sarpahastamanirdeśyaṁ pāśahastamivāntakam ,
dṛṣṭavānasmi govinda tadastraṁ rudrasaṁnidhau.

iva uditam sarpahastam anirdeśyam
pāśahastam iva antakam dṛṣṭavān asmi

136. O Govinda, I have seen that weapon in the presence of Rudra. It was smokeless, flaming, and dark, like the rising sun of dissolution (kāla). It was indescribable, appearing with serpents in hand, similar to Antaka (Yama) holding a noose.
परशुस्तीक्ष्णधारश्च दत्तो रामस्य यः पुरा ।
महादेवेन तुष्टेन क्षत्रियाणां क्षयंकरः ।
कार्तवीर्यो हतो येन चक्रवर्ती महामृधे ॥१३७॥
137. paraśustīkṣṇadhāraśca datto rāmasya yaḥ purā ,
mahādevena tuṣṭena kṣatriyāṇāṁ kṣayaṁkaraḥ ,
kārtavīryo hato yena cakravartī mahāmṛdhe.
137. paraśuḥ tīkṣṇadhāraḥ ca dattaḥ
rāmasya yaḥ purā mahādevena tuṣṭena
kṣatriyāṇām kṣayaṃkaraḥ kārtavīryaḥ

137. ca yaḥ tīkṣṇadhāraḥ paraśuḥ purā
rāmasya tuṣṭena mahādevena dattaḥ
kṣatriyāṇām kṣayaṃkaraḥ yena
cakravartī kārtavīryaḥ mahāmṛdhe hataḥ
137. And the sharp-edged axe, which was given to Rāma previously by the pleased Mahādeva, was the cause of the destruction of the kṣatriyas. By this axe, the emperor Kārtavīrya was slain in a great battle.
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी येन निःक्षत्रिया कृता ।
जामदग्न्येन गोविन्द रामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा ॥१३८॥
138. triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī yena niḥkṣatriyā kṛtā ,
jāmadagnyena govinda rāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā.

138. O Govinda, by that son of Jamadagni, Rāma, whose deeds were effortless, the earth was cleared of kṣatriyas twenty-one times.
दीप्तधारः सुरौद्रास्यः सर्पकण्ठाग्रवेष्टितः ।
अभवच्छूलिनोऽभ्याशे दीप्तवह्निशिखोपमः ॥१३९॥
139. dīptadhāraḥ suraudrāsyaḥ sarpakaṇṭhāgraveṣṭitaḥ ,
abhavacchūlino'bhyāśe dīptavahniśikhopamaḥ.

139. It had a blazing edge and a very fierce appearance, entwined by serpents around its neck. It appeared near the trident-wielder (Shiva), resembling the tip of a blazing fire (vahni).
असंख्येयानि चास्त्राणि तस्य दिव्यानि धीमतः ।
प्राधान्यतो मयैतानि कीर्तितानि तवानघ ॥१४०॥
140. asaṁkhyeyāni cāstrāṇi tasya divyāni dhīmataḥ ,
prādhānyato mayaitāni kīrtitāni tavānagha.
140. asaṃkhyeyāni ca astrāṇi tasya divyāni dhīmataḥ
prādhānyataḥ mayā etāni kīrtitāni tava anagha
140. anagha tasya dhīmataḥ asaṃkhyeyāni ca divyāni
astrāṇi mayā prādhānyataḥ etāni tava kīrtitāni
140. O sinless one, that wise individual possesses innumerable divine weapons. I have, however, principally mentioned these to you.
सव्यदेशे तु देवस्य ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
दिव्यं विमानमास्थाय हंसयुक्तं मनोजवम् ॥१४१॥
141. savyadeśe tu devasya brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ ,
divyaṁ vimānamāsthāya haṁsayuktaṁ manojavam.
141. savya-deśe tu devasya brahmā loka-pitāmahaḥ
divyam vimānam āsthāya haṃsa-yuktam mano-javam
141. tu devasya savya-deśe brahmā loka-pitāmahaḥ
haṃsa-yuktam mano-javam divyam vimānam āsthāya
141. And on the left side of the deity, Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, having ascended a divine aerial chariot, drawn by swans and swift as thought, was present.
वामपार्श्वगतश्चैव तथा नारायणः स्थितः ।
वैनतेयं समास्थाय शङ्खचक्रगदाधरः ॥१४२॥
142. vāmapārśvagataścaiva tathā nārāyaṇaḥ sthitaḥ ,
vainateyaṁ samāsthāya śaṅkhacakragadādharaḥ.
142. vāma-pārśva-gataḥ ca eva tathā nārāyaṇaḥ sthitaḥ
vainateyam samāsthāya śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dharaḥ
142. ca eva tathā nārāyaṇaḥ śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-dharaḥ
vainateyam samāsthāya vāma-pārśva-gataḥ sthitaḥ
142. And similarly, Nārāyaṇa was situated on the left side, having mounted Vainateya (Garuda), bearing a conch, a discus, and a mace.
स्कन्दो मयूरमास्थाय स्थितो देव्याः समीपतः ।
शक्तिं कण्ठे समादाय द्वितीय इव पावकः ॥१४३॥
143. skando mayūramāsthāya sthito devyāḥ samīpataḥ ,
śaktiṁ kaṇṭhe samādāya dvitīya iva pāvakaḥ.

143. Skanda, having mounted his peacock, stood near the goddess. He was holding the spear (śakti) close to his neck, appearing like a second (manifestation of) fire.
पुरस्ताच्चैव देवस्य नन्दिं पश्याम्यवस्थितम् ।
शूलं विष्टभ्य तिष्ठन्तं द्वितीयमिव शंकरम् ॥१४४॥
144. purastāccaiva devasya nandiṁ paśyāmyavasthitam ,
śūlaṁ viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhantaṁ dvitīyamiva śaṁkaram.
144. purastāt ca eva devasya nandin paśyāmi avasthitam
śūlam viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhantam dvitīyam iva śaṅkaram
144. And indeed, in front of the deity, I see Nandi positioned, standing with a spear in hand, like a second Śaṅkara.
स्वायंभुवाद्या मनवो भृग्वाद्या ऋषयस्तथा ।
शक्राद्या देवताश्चैव सर्व एव समभ्ययुः ॥१४५॥
145. svāyaṁbhuvādyā manavo bhṛgvādyā ṛṣayastathā ,
śakrādyā devatāścaiva sarva eva samabhyayuḥ.
145. svāyambhuva ādyāḥ manavaḥ bhṛgu ādyāḥ ṛṣayaḥ tathā
śakra ādyāḥ devatāḥ ca eva sarve eva sam abhyayuḥ
145. The Manus, beginning with Svāyambhuva, and the sages, beginning with Bhṛgu, as well as the deities, beginning with Śakra (Indra), all of them arrived together.
तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं परिवार्य समन्ततः ।
अस्तुवन्विविधैः स्तोत्रैर्महादेवं सुरास्तदा ॥१४६॥
146. te'bhivādya mahātmānaṁ parivārya samantataḥ ,
astuvanvividhaiḥ stotrairmahādevaṁ surāstadā.
146. te abhivādya mahātmānam parivārya samantataḥ
astuvan vividhaiḥ stotraiḥ mahādevam surāḥ tadā
146. Having saluted that great soul (mahātman) and surrounded him from all sides, the gods then praised Mahādeva with various hymns.
ब्रह्मा भवं तदा स्तुन्वन्रथन्तरमुदीरयन् ।
ज्येष्ठसाम्ना च देवेशं जगौ नारायणस्तदा ।
गृणञ्शक्रः परं ब्रह्म शतरुद्रीयमुत्तमम् ॥१४७॥
147. brahmā bhavaṁ tadā stunvanrathantaramudīrayan ,
jyeṣṭhasāmnā ca deveśaṁ jagau nārāyaṇastadā ,
gṛṇañśakraḥ paraṁ brahma śatarudrīyamuttamam.
147. brahmā bhavam tadā stunvan rathantaram
udīrayan jyeṣṭhasāmnā ca deveśam
jagau nārāyaṇaḥ tadā gṛṇan śakraḥ
param brahma śatarudrīyam uttamam
147. Brahmā then praised Bhava (Śiva), reciting the Rathantara sāman. And Nārāyaṇa then sang of the Lord of Gods (Śiva) with the Jyeṣṭhasāman. Śakra (Indra), chanting the excellent Śatarudrīya stotra, praised the supreme reality (brahman).
ब्रह्मा नारायणश्चैव देवराजश्च कौशिकः ।
अशोभन्त महात्मानस्त्रयस्त्रय इवाग्नयः ॥१४८॥
148. brahmā nārāyaṇaścaiva devarājaśca kauśikaḥ ,
aśobhanta mahātmānastrayastraya ivāgnayaḥ.

aśobhanta mahātmānaḥ trayaḥ trayaḥ iva agnayaḥ

148. Brahmā, Nārāyaṇa, and Kauśika (Indra, the king of the gods) – these three great beings shone brilliantly, like three fires.
तेषां मध्यगतो देवो रराज भगवाञ्शिवः ।
शरद्घनविनिर्मुक्तः परिविष्ट इवांशुमान् ।
ततोऽहमस्तुवं देवं स्तवेनानेन सुव्रतम् ॥१४९॥
149. teṣāṁ madhyagato devo rarāja bhagavāñśivaḥ ,
śaradghanavinirmuktaḥ pariviṣṭa ivāṁśumān ,
tato'hamastuvaṁ devaṁ stavenānena suvratam.

149. Among them, the divine Lord (bhagavān) Śiva shone. He was like the sun (aṃśumān), freed from autumn clouds and surrounded by a halo. Then, I praised that virtuous (suvrata) deity with this hymn.
नमो देवाधिदेवाय महादेवाय वै नमः ।
शक्राय शक्ररूपाय शक्रवेषधराय च ॥१५०॥
150. namo devādhidevāya mahādevāya vai namaḥ ,
śakrāya śakrarūpāya śakraveṣadharāya ca.

150. Homage to the God of gods, to the Great God (mahādeva)! Indeed, homage! To Śakra (Indra), whose form is like Śakra's, and to him who assumes the guise of Śakra.
नमस्ते वज्रहस्ताय पिङ्गलायारुणाय च ।
पिनाकपाणये नित्यं खड्गशूलधराय च ॥१५१॥
151. namaste vajrahastāya piṅgalāyāruṇāya ca ,
pinākapāṇaye nityaṁ khaḍgaśūladharāya ca.

151. Homage to you, the wielder of the thunderbolt, to the tawny-colored one, and to the ruddy one. Always homage to him who holds the Pināka bow in his hand, and who wields a sword and a spear.
नमस्ते कृष्णवासाय कृष्णकुञ्चितमूर्धजे ।
कृष्णाजिनोत्तरीयाय कृष्णाष्टमिरताय च ॥१५२॥
152. namaste kṛṣṇavāsāya kṛṣṇakuñcitamūrdhaje ,
kṛṣṇājinottarīyāya kṛṣṇāṣṭamiratāya ca.

152. Salutations to you, whose garments are dark, whose hair is dark and curly, whose upper garment is a black antelope skin, and who is devoted to the eighth day of the dark fortnight.
शुक्लवर्णाय शुक्लाय शुक्लाम्बरधराय च ।
शुक्लभस्मावलिप्ताय शुक्लकर्मरताय च ॥१५३॥

153. Salutations to one of white color, to the pure one, and to one wearing white garments; to one smeared with white ash, and to one devoted to pure actions (karma).
त्वं ब्रह्मा सर्वदेवानां रुद्राणां नीललोहितः ।
आत्मा च सर्वभूतानां सांख्ये पुरुष उच्यसे ॥१५४॥
154. tvaṁ brahmā sarvadevānāṁ rudrāṇāṁ nīlalohitaḥ ,
ātmā ca sarvabhūtānāṁ sāṁkhye puruṣa ucyase.
154. tvam brahmā sarvadevānām rudrāṇām nīlalohitaḥ
ātmā ca sarvabhūtānām sāṅkhye puruṣaḥ ucyase

154. You are Brahmā among all the gods, and Nīlalohita among the Rudras. You are also the self (ātman) of all beings, and in Sāṅkhya philosophy, you are called the supreme cosmic person (puruṣa).
ऋषभस्त्वं पवित्राणां योगिनां निष्कलः शिवः ।
आश्रमाणां गृहस्थस्त्वमीश्वराणां महेश्वरः ।
कुबेरः सर्वयक्षाणां क्रतूनां विष्णुरुच्यसे ॥१५५॥
155. ṛṣabhastvaṁ pavitrāṇāṁ yogināṁ niṣkalaḥ śivaḥ ,
āśramāṇāṁ gṛhasthastvamīśvarāṇāṁ maheśvaraḥ ,
kuberaḥ sarvayakṣāṇāṁ kratūnāṁ viṣṇurucyase.
155. ṛṣabhaḥ tvam pavitrāṇām yoginām
niṣkalaḥ śivaḥ āśramāṇām gṛhasthaḥ
tvam īśvarāṇām maheśvaraḥ kuberaḥ
sarvayakṣāṇām kratūnām viṣṇuḥ ucyase
155. tvam pavitrāṇām ṛṣabhaḥ yoginām
niṣkalaḥ śivaḥ āśramāṇām gṛhasthaḥ
īśvarāṇām maheśvaraḥ sarvayakṣāṇām
kuberaḥ kratūnām viṣṇuḥ ucyase
155. You are the foremost among the pure ones, and the faultless Śiva among the yogis (yogin). Among the stages of life (āśrama), you are the householder, and among the lords, you are the great lord (Maheśvara). You are Kubera among all Yakṣas, and Viṣṇu among the Vedic rituals.
पर्वतानां महामेरुर्नक्षत्राणां च चन्द्रमाः ।
वसिष्ठस्त्वमृषीणां च ग्रहाणां सूर्य उच्यसे ॥१५६॥
156. parvatānāṁ mahāmerurnakṣatrāṇāṁ ca candramāḥ ,
vasiṣṭhastvamṛṣīṇāṁ ca grahāṇāṁ sūrya ucyase.

156. Among mountains, you are Mahameru; among constellations, the moon. Among the sages (ṛṣi), you are Vasiṣṭha, and among the planets, you are called the sun.
आरण्यानां पशूनां च सिंहस्त्वं परमेश्वरः ।
ग्राम्याणां गोवृषश्चासि भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः ॥१५७॥
157. āraṇyānāṁ paśūnāṁ ca siṁhastvaṁ parameśvaraḥ ,
grāmyāṇāṁ govṛṣaścāsi bhagavāँllokapūjitaḥ.

grāmyāṇām go-vṛṣaḥ ca asi bhagavān loka-pūjitaḥ

157. Among wild animals, you are the lion, O supreme lord. Among domesticated animals, you are the bull, O revered one, worshipped by the world.
आदित्यानां भवान्विष्णुर्वसूनां चैव पावकः ।
पक्षिणां वैनतेयश्च अनन्तो भुजगेषु च ॥१५८॥
158. ādityānāṁ bhavānviṣṇurvasūnāṁ caiva pāvakaḥ ,
pakṣiṇāṁ vainateyaśca ananto bhujageṣu ca.
158. ādityānām bhavān viṣṇuḥ vasūnām ca eva pāvakaḥ
pakṣiṇām vainateyaḥ ca anantaḥ bhujageṣu ca
158. bhavān ādityānām viṣṇuḥ ca eva vasūnām pāvakaḥ
ca pakṣiṇām vainateyaḥ ca bhujageṣu anantaḥ
158. Among the Adityas, you are Viṣṇu; among the Vasus, indeed, you are Agni (pāvaka). Among birds, you are Garuḍa (Vainateya), and among serpents, Ananta.
सामवेदश्च वेदानां यजुषां शतरुद्रियम् ।
सनत्कुमारो योगीनां सांख्यानां कपिलो ह्यसि ॥१५९॥
159. sāmavedaśca vedānāṁ yajuṣāṁ śatarudriyam ,
sanatkumāro yogīnāṁ sāṁkhyānāṁ kapilo hyasi.

sanatkumāraḥ yogīnām sāṃkhyānām kapilaḥ hi asi
159. vedānām sāmavedaḥ ca yajuṣām śatarudriyam

159. Among the Vedas, you are the Sāmaveda, and among the Yajus mantras, the Śatarudriya hymn. Among the practitioners of yoga (yogin), you are Sanatkumāra, and among the philosophers of Sāṃkhya, you are indeed Kapila.
शक्रोऽसि मरुतां देव पितॄणां धर्मराडसि ।
ब्रह्मलोकश्च लोकानां गतीनां मोक्ष उच्यसे ॥१६०॥
160. śakro'si marutāṁ deva pitṝṇāṁ dharmarāḍasi ,
brahmalokaśca lokānāṁ gatīnāṁ mokṣa ucyase.
160. śakraḥ asi marutām deva pitṝṇām dharmarāṭ asi
brahmalokaḥ ca lokānām gatīnām mokṣaḥ ucyase
160. O god, you are Indra among the Maruts. You are the lord of natural law (dharma) among the ancestors. Among the various worlds, you are the world of Brahman, and among all possible ultimate destinations, you are declared to be liberation (mokṣa).
क्षीरोदः सागराणां च शैलानां हिमवान्गिरिः ।
वर्णानां ब्राह्मणश्चासि विप्राणां दीक्षितो द्विजः ।
आदिस्त्वमसि लोकानां संहर्ता काल एव च ॥१६१॥
161. kṣīrodaḥ sāgarāṇāṁ ca śailānāṁ himavāngiriḥ ,
varṇānāṁ brāhmaṇaścāsi viprāṇāṁ dīkṣito dvijaḥ ,
ādistvamasi lokānāṁ saṁhartā kāla eva ca.
161. kṣīrodaḥ sāgarāṇām ca śailānām
himavān giriḥ varṇānām brāhmaṇaḥ ca
asi viprāṇām dīkṣitaḥ dvijaḥ ādiḥ
tvam asi lokānām saṃhartā kālaḥ eva ca
161. Among the oceans, you are the Milk Ocean; among mountains, you are the Himalaya. Among the social orders (varṇa), you are the brahmin, and among the learned, you are the initiated twice-born. You are the origin of the worlds, and you are also the destroyer, indeed, time (kāla) itself.
यच्चान्यदपि लोकेषु सत्त्वं तेजोधिकं स्मृतम् ।
तत्सर्वं भगवानेव इति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥१६२॥
162. yaccānyadapi lokeṣu sattvaṁ tejodhikaṁ smṛtam ,
tatsarvaṁ bhagavāneva iti me niścitā matiḥ.
162. yat ca anyat api lokeṣu sattvam tejaḥ adhikam
smṛtam tat sarvam bhagavān eva iti me niścitā matiḥ
162. And whatever other essence (sattva) in the worlds is considered to possess great splendor and power, all that is verily the Lord Himself. Such is my firm conviction.
नमस्ते भगवन्देव नमस्ते भक्तवत्सल ।
योगेश्वर नमस्तेऽस्तु नमस्ते विश्वसंभव ॥१६३॥
163. namaste bhagavandeva namaste bhaktavatsala ,
yogeśvara namaste'stu namaste viśvasaṁbhava.
163. namaḥ te bhagavan deva namaḥ te bhaktavatsala
yogeśvara namaḥ te astu namaḥ te viśvasambhava
163. Salutations to you, O divine Lord! Salutations to you, O affectionate protector of devotees! O Lord of yoga (yoga), salutations be to you! Salutations to you, O origin of the universe!
प्रसीद मम भक्तस्य दीनस्य कृपणस्य च ।
अनैश्वर्येण युक्तस्य गतिर्भव सनातन ॥१६४॥
164. prasīda mama bhaktasya dīnasya kṛpaṇasya ca ,
anaiśvaryeṇa yuktasya gatirbhava sanātana.

164. O Eternal One, be gracious to me, your devotee (bhakta), who is humble, helpless, and afflicted by powerlessness. Be my refuge.
यं चापराधं कृतवानज्ञानात्परमेश्वर ।
मद्भक्त इति देवेश तत्सर्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥१६५॥
165. yaṁ cāparādhaṁ kṛtavānajñānātparameśvara ,
madbhakta iti deveśa tatsarvaṁ kṣantumarhasi.
165. yam ca aparādham kṛtavān ajñānāt parameśvara
mat bhaktaḥ iti deveśa tat sarvam kṣantum arhasi
165. parameśvara deveśa,
[tvam] mat bhaktaḥ iti ajñānāt yam ca aparādham kṛtavān tat sarvam kṣantum arhasi
165. O Supreme Lord, O Lord of Gods, you should forgive all those offenses which I have committed out of ignorance, considering 'he is my devotee (bhakta)'.
मोहितश्चास्मि देवेश तुभ्यं रूपविपर्ययात् ।
तेन नार्घ्यं मया दत्तं पाद्यं चापि सुरेश्वर ॥१६६॥
166. mohitaścāsmi deveśa tubhyaṁ rūpaviparyayāt ,
tena nārghyaṁ mayā dattaṁ pādyaṁ cāpi sureśvara.
166. mohitaḥ ca asmi deveśa tubhyam rūpaviparyayāt tena
na arghyam mayā dattam pādyam ca api sureśvara
166. deveśa sureśvara,
tubhyam rūpaviparyayāt ca mohitaḥ asmi.
tena mayā arghyam pādyam ca api na dattam
166. O Lord of Gods, I was bewildered due to the change in your form. For that reason, I did not offer you the reverential water or the water for washing feet, O Lord of Suras.
एवं स्तुत्वाहमीशानं पाद्यमर्घ्यं च भक्तितः ।
कृताञ्जलिपुटो भूत्वा सर्वं तस्मै न्यवेदयम् ॥१६७॥
167. evaṁ stutvāhamīśānaṁ pādyamarghyaṁ ca bhaktitaḥ ,
kṛtāñjalipuṭo bhūtvā sarvaṁ tasmai nyavedayam.
167. evam stutvā aham īśānam pādyam arghyam ca bhaktitaḥ
kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ bhūtvā sarvam tasmai nyavedayam
167. evam īśānam stutvā bhaktitaḥ kṛtāñjalipuṭaḥ bhūtvā

167. Having thus praised the Lord Īśāna, and standing with cupped hands with devotion (bhakti), I offered all the water for washing feet and reverential water to Him.
ततः शीताम्बुसंयुक्ता दिव्यगन्धसमन्विता ।
पुष्पवृष्टिः शुभा तात पपात मम मूर्धनि ॥१६८॥
168. tataḥ śītāmbusaṁyuktā divyagandhasamanvitā ,
puṣpavṛṣṭiḥ śubhā tāta papāta mama mūrdhani.
168. tataḥ śītāmbu-saṃyuktā divya-gandha-samanvitā
puṣpa-vṛṣṭiḥ śubhā tāta papāta mama mūrdhani
168. tataḥ tāta śītāmbu-saṃyuktā divya-gandha-samanvitā
śubhā puṣpa-vṛṣṭiḥ mama mūrdhani papāta
168. Then, O dear one, an auspicious rain of flowers, accompanied by cool water and endowed with a divine fragrance, fell upon my head.
दुन्दुभिश्च ततो दिव्यस्ताडितो देवकिंकरैः ।
ववौ च मारुतः पुण्यः शुचिगन्धः सुखावहः ॥१६९॥
169. dundubhiśca tato divyastāḍito devakiṁkaraiḥ ,
vavau ca mārutaḥ puṇyaḥ śucigandhaḥ sukhāvahaḥ.
169. dundubhiḥ ca tataḥ divyaḥ tāḍitaḥ deva-kiṅkaraiḥ
vavau ca mārutaḥ puṇyaḥ śuci-gandhaḥ sukha-āvahaḥ

ca puṇyaḥ śuci-gandhaḥ sukha-āvahaḥ mārutaḥ vavau
169. Then, a divine drum was struck by the servants of the gods, and a pure, sweet-smelling, pleasant wind blew.
ततः प्रीतो महादेवः सपत्नीको वृषध्वजः ।
अब्रवीत्त्रिदशांस्तत्र हर्षयन्निव मां तदा ॥१७०॥
170. tataḥ prīto mahādevaḥ sapatnīko vṛṣadhvajaḥ ,
abravīttridaśāṁstatra harṣayanniva māṁ tadā.

170. tataḥ prītaḥ sa-patnīkaḥ vṛṣa-dhvajaḥ mahādevaḥ
tadā mām harṣayan iva tatra tridaśān abravīt
170. Then, the pleased great god (Mahādeva), with his consort, the bull-bannered one (Śiva), spoke to the gods there, as if delighting me at that moment.
पश्यध्वं त्रिदशाः सर्वे उपमन्योर्महात्मनः ।
मयि भक्तिं परां दिव्यामेकभावादवस्थिताम् ॥१७१॥
171. paśyadhvaṁ tridaśāḥ sarve upamanyormahātmanaḥ ,
mayi bhaktiṁ parāṁ divyāmekabhāvādavasthitām.
171. paśyadhvam tridaśāḥ sarve upamanyoḥ mahā-ātmanaḥ
mayi bhaktim parām divyām eka-bhāvāt avasthitām

171. O all you gods, behold the supreme, divine devotion (bhakti) of the great-souled (mahātman) Upamanyu, which is firmly established in me through his singular focus.
एवमुक्तास्ततः कृष्ण सुरास्ते शूलपाणिना ।
ऊचुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे नमस्कृत्वा वृषध्वजम् ॥१७२॥
172. evamuktāstataḥ kṛṣṇa surāste śūlapāṇinā ,
ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve namaskṛtvā vṛṣadhvajam.
172. evam uktāḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇa surāḥ te śūlapāṇinā
ūcuḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve namaskṛtvā vṛṣadhvajam

172. O Kṛṣṇa, thus addressed by Śūlapāṇi, all those gods, with folded hands, bowed to Vṛṣadhvaja and spoke.
भगवन्देवदेवेश लोकनाथ जगत्पते ।
लभतां सर्वकामेभ्यः फलं त्वत्तो द्विजोत्तमः ॥१७३॥
173. bhagavandevadeveśa lokanātha jagatpate ,
labhatāṁ sarvakāmebhyaḥ phalaṁ tvatto dvijottamaḥ.

173. O Lord, Supreme Lord of the gods, Lord of the worlds, Master of the universe! May that best of brahmins obtain from you the fruit of all his desires.
एवमुक्तस्ततः शर्वः सुरैर्ब्रह्मादिभिस्तथा ।
आह मां भगवानीशः प्रहसन्निव शंकरः ॥१७४॥
174. evamuktastataḥ śarvaḥ surairbrahmādibhistathā ,
āha māṁ bhagavānīśaḥ prahasanniva śaṁkaraḥ.
174. evam uktaḥ tataḥ śarvaḥ suraiḥ brahmādibhiḥ
tathā āha mām bhagavān īśaḥ prahasan iva śaṅkaraḥ
174. tathā brahmādibhiḥ suraiḥ evam uktaḥ bhagavān
īśaḥ śaṅkaraḥ śarvaḥ prahasan iva mām āha
174. Thus addressed by the gods, headed by Brahmā, Lord Śarva, the divine Īśa, Śaṅkara, then spoke to me as if with a smile.
वत्सोपमन्यो प्रीतोऽस्मि पश्य मां मुनिपुंगव ।
दृढभक्तोऽसि विप्रर्षे मया जिज्ञासितो ह्यसि ॥१७५॥
175. vatsopamanyo prīto'smi paśya māṁ munipuṁgava ,
dṛḍhabhakto'si viprarṣe mayā jijñāsito hyasi.
175. vatsa upamanyo prītaḥ asmi paśya mām munipuṅgava
dṛḍhabhaktaḥ asi viprarṣe mayā jijñāsitaḥ hi asi
175. vatsa upamanyo munipuṅgava viprarṣe prītaḥ asmi
mām paśya dṛḍhabhaktaḥ hi asi mayā jijñāsitaḥ asi
175. My dear son, Upamanyu, O foremost of sages (munipuṅgava), I am pleased. Behold me! O brahmin-sage, you are indeed firmly devoted; I have wished to know you.
अनया चैव भक्त्या ते अत्यर्थं प्रीतिमानहम् ।
तस्मात्सर्वान्ददाम्यद्य कामांस्तव यथेप्शितान् ॥१७६॥
176. anayā caiva bhaktyā te atyarthaṁ prītimānaham ,
tasmātsarvāndadāmyadya kāmāṁstava yathepśitān.
176. anaya ca eva bhaktyā te atyartham prītimān aham
tasmāt sarvān dadāmi adya kāmān tava yathā īpsitān
176. te anayā bhaktyā aham atyartham prītimān tasmāt
adya tava sarvān yathā īpsitān kāmān dadāmi
176. Because of this devotion (bhakti) of yours, I am exceedingly pleased. Therefore, today I grant all your desires just as you wish.
एवमुक्तस्य चैवाथ महादेवेन मे विभो ।
हर्षादश्रूण्यवर्तन्त लोमहर्षश्च जायते ॥१७७॥
177. evamuktasya caivātha mahādevena me vibho ,
harṣādaśrūṇyavartanta lomaharṣaśca jāyate.
177. evam uktasya ca eva atha mahādevena me vibho
harṣāt aśrūṇi avartanta lomaharṣaḥ ca jāyate
177. vibho mahādevena evam uktasya me harṣāt
aśrūṇi avartanta ca lomaharṣaḥ jāyate atha
177. O Lord (vibho), as I was thus addressed by Mahadeva, tears flowed from joy, and horripilation arose.
अब्रुवं च तदा देवं हर्षगद्गदया गिरा ।
जानुभ्यामवनिं गत्वा प्रणम्य च पुनः पुनः ॥१७८॥
178. abruvaṁ ca tadā devaṁ harṣagadgadayā girā ,
jānubhyāmavaniṁ gatvā praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ.
178. abruvam ca tadā devam harṣagadgadayā girā
jānubhyām avanim gatvā praṇamya ca punaḥ punaḥ
178. tadā ca janubhyām avanim gatvā punaḥ punaḥ
praṇamya ca harṣagadgadayā girā devam abruvam
178. Then, having knelt on the ground and repeatedly prostrated myself, I spoke to the god in a voice choked with joy.
अद्य जातो ह्यहं देव अद्य मे सफलं तपः ।
यन्मे साक्षान्महादेवः प्रसन्नस्तिष्ठतेऽग्रतः ॥१७९॥
179. adya jāto hyahaṁ deva adya me saphalaṁ tapaḥ ,
yanme sākṣānmahādevaḥ prasannastiṣṭhate'grataḥ.
179. adya jātaḥ hi aham deva adya me saphalam tapaḥ
yat me sākṣāt mahādevaḥ prasannaḥ tiṣṭhate agrataḥ
179. deva adya hi aham jātaḥ adya me tapaḥ saphalam
yat mahādevaḥ sākṣāt me agrataḥ prasannaḥ tiṣṭhate
179. O God, today I am truly born (anew)! Today my asceticism (tapas) has become fruitful, because Mahadeva himself stands before me, pleased.
यं न पश्यन्ति चाराध्य देवा ह्यमितविक्रमम् ।
तमहं दृष्टवान्देवं कोऽन्यो धन्यतरो मया ॥१८०॥
180. yaṁ na paśyanti cārādhya devā hyamitavikramam ,
tamahaṁ dṛṣṭavāndevaṁ ko'nyo dhanyataro mayā.
180. yam na paśyanti ca ārādhya devāḥ hi amitavikramam
tam aham dṛṣṭavān devam kaḥ anyaḥ dhanyataraḥ mayā
180. devāḥ ca ārādhya yam amitavikramam hi na paśyanti
tam devam aham dṛṣṭavān kaḥ anyaḥ dhanyataraḥ mayā
180. Even after worshipping, the gods do not behold him, that deity of immeasurable power. I have seen that god. Who is more blessed than I?
एवं ध्यायन्ति विद्वांसः परं तत्त्वं सनातनम् ।
षड्विंशकमिति ख्यातं यत्परात्परमक्षरम् ॥१८१॥
181. evaṁ dhyāyanti vidvāṁsaḥ paraṁ tattvaṁ sanātanam ,
ṣaḍviṁśakamiti khyātaṁ yatparātparamakṣaram.
181. evam dhyāyanti vidvāṃsaḥ param tattvam sanātanam
ṣaḍviṃśakam iti khyātam yat parāt param akṣaram
181. vidvāṃsaḥ evam sanātanam param tattvam dhyāyanti
yat ṣaḍviṃśakam iti khyātam parāt param akṣaram
181. In this way, the wise meditate upon the supreme, eternal principle, known as the twenty-sixth (tattva), which is the imperishable (akṣaram), higher than the highest.
स एष भगवान्देवः सर्वतत्त्वादिरव्ययः ।
सर्वतत्त्वविधानज्ञः प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः ॥१८२॥
182. sa eṣa bhagavāndevaḥ sarvatattvādiravyayaḥ ,
sarvatattvavidhānajñaḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ.
182. saḥ eṣaḥ bhagavān devaḥ sarvatattvādiravyayaḥ
sarvatattvavidhānajñaḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ
182. saḥ eṣaḥ bhagavān devaḥ sarvatattvādiravyayaḥ
sarvatattvavidhānajñaḥ pradhānapuruṣeśvaraḥ
182. This very divine Lord is the imperishable origin of all principles, the knower of the rules of all principles, and the lord of primordial nature (prakṛti) and the supreme cosmic person (puruṣa).
योऽसृजद्दक्षिणादङ्गाद्ब्रह्माणं लोकसंभवम् ।
वामपार्श्वात्तथा विष्णुं लोकरक्षार्थमीश्वरः ।
युगान्ते चैव संप्राप्ते रुद्रमङ्गात्सृजत्प्रभुः ॥१८३॥
183. yo'sṛjaddakṣiṇādaṅgādbrahmāṇaṁ lokasaṁbhavam ,
vāmapārśvāttathā viṣṇuṁ lokarakṣārthamīśvaraḥ ,
yugānte caiva saṁprāpte rudramaṅgātsṛjatprabhuḥ.
183. yaḥ asṛjat dakṣiṇāt aṅgāt brahmāṇam
lokasaṃbhavam vāmapārśvāt tathā viṣṇum
lokarakṣārtham īśvaraḥ yugānte ca eva
saṃprāpte rudram aṅgāt sṛjat prabhuḥ
183. yaḥ īśvaraḥ dakṣiṇāt aṅgāt lokasaṃbhavam
brahmāṇam asṛjat tathā vāmapārśvāt
lokarakṣārtham viṣṇum ca eva yugānte
saṃprāpte prabhuḥ aṅgāt rudram sṛjat
183. The Lord who created Brahmā, the origin of the worlds, from his right limb, and similarly Viṣṇu from his left side for the protection of the worlds. And when the end of the cosmic age arrived, that Lord created Rudra from his own body.
स रुद्रः संहरन्कृत्स्नं जगत्स्थावरजङ्गमम् ।
कालो भूत्वा महातेजाः संवर्तक इवानलः ॥१८४॥
184. sa rudraḥ saṁharankṛtsnaṁ jagatsthāvarajaṅgamam ,
kālo bhūtvā mahātejāḥ saṁvartaka ivānalaḥ.
184. sa rudraḥ saṃharan kṛtsnam jagat sthāvarajaṅgamam
kālaḥ bhūtvā mahātejāḥ saṃvartakaḥ iva analaḥ
184. sa rudraḥ mahātejāḥ kālaḥ bhūtvā kṛtsnam
sthāvarajaṅgamam jagat saṃharan saṃvartakaḥ analaḥ iva
184. That Rudra, greatly resplendent, destroying the entire world - both static and dynamic - by becoming Time, is like the fire of cosmic dissolution.
एष देवो महादेवो जगत्सृष्ट्वा चराचरम् ।
कल्पान्ते चैव सर्वेषां स्मृतिमाक्षिप्य तिष्ठति ॥१८५॥
185. eṣa devo mahādevo jagatsṛṣṭvā carācaram ,
kalpānte caiva sarveṣāṁ smṛtimākṣipya tiṣṭhati.
185. eṣaḥ devaḥ mahādevaḥ jagat sṛṣṭvā carācaram
kalpānte ca eva sarveṣām smṛtim ākṣipya tiṣṭhati
185. eṣaḥ devaḥ mahādevaḥ carācaram jagat sṛṣṭvā ca
eva kalpānte sarveṣām smṛtim ākṣipya tiṣṭhati
185. This very deity, the great god (Mahādeva), after creating the entire moving and non-moving world, remains by withdrawing the memory of all (beings) at the end of a cosmic cycle (kalpa).
सर्वगः सर्वभूतात्मा सर्वभूतभवोद्भवः ।
आस्ते सर्वगतो नित्यमदृश्यः सर्वदैवतैः ॥१८६॥
186. sarvagaḥ sarvabhūtātmā sarvabhūtabhavodbhavaḥ ,
āste sarvagato nityamadṛśyaḥ sarvadaivataiḥ.
186. sarvagaḥ sarvabhūtātmā sarvabhūtabhavodbhavaḥ
āste sarvagataḥ nityam adṛśyaḥ sarvadaivataiḥ
186. sarvagaḥ sarvabhūtātmā sarvabhūtabhavodbhavaḥ
saḥ nityam sarvagataḥ adṛśyaḥ sarvadaivataiḥ āste
186. He is all-pervading, the self (ātman) of all beings, and the origin of the existence of all beings. He eternally abides, all-pervading, yet invisible to all deities.
यदि देयो वरो मह्यं यदि तुष्टश्च मे प्रभुः ।
भक्तिर्भवतु मे नित्यं शाश्वती त्वयि शंकर ॥१८७॥
187. yadi deyo varo mahyaṁ yadi tuṣṭaśca me prabhuḥ ,
bhaktirbhavatu me nityaṁ śāśvatī tvayi śaṁkara.
187. yadi deyaḥ varaḥ mahyam yadi tuṣṭaḥ ca me prabhuḥ
bhaktiḥ bhavatu me nityam śāśvatī tvayi śaṅkara
187. śaṅkara yadi varaḥ mahyam deyaḥ yadi ca me prabhuḥ
tuṣṭaḥ me bhaktiḥ tvayi nityam śāśvatī bhavatu
187. O Śaṅkara, if a boon is to be granted to me, and if my lord is pleased with me, then let my devotion (bhakti) to you be eternal.
अतीतानागतं चैव वर्तमानं च यद्विभो ।
जानीयामिति मे बुद्धिस्त्वत्प्रसादात्सुरोत्तम ॥१८८॥
188. atītānāgataṁ caiva vartamānaṁ ca yadvibho ,
jānīyāmiti me buddhistvatprasādātsurottama.
188. atīta-anāgatam ca eva vartamānam ca yat vibho
jānīyām iti me buddhiḥ tvat-prasādāt sura-uttama
188. vibho sura-uttama tvat-prasādāt me buddhiḥ iti
yat atīta-anāgatam ca eva vartamānam ca jānīyām
188. O all-pervading Lord, O best of the gods, by your grace, it is my intention to know the past, present, and future.
क्षीरोदनं च भुञ्जीयामक्षयं सह बान्धवैः ।
आश्रमे च सदा मह्यं सांनिध्यं परमस्तु ते ॥१८९॥
189. kṣīrodanaṁ ca bhuñjīyāmakṣayaṁ saha bāndhavaiḥ ,
āśrame ca sadā mahyaṁ sāṁnidhyaṁ paramastu te.
189. kṣīra-odanam ca bhuñjīyam akṣayam saha bāndhavaiḥ
āśrame ca sadā mahyam sāṃnidhyam param astu te
189. (aham) akṣayam kṣīra-odanam ca bāndhavaiḥ saha
bhuñjīyam ca te param sāṃnidhyam sadā mahyam āśrame astu
189. May I partake of imperishable milk-rice with my relatives, and may your supreme presence (sāṃnidhya) always remain in my hermitage (āśrama).
एवमुक्तः स मां प्राह भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः ।
महेश्वरो महातेजाश्चराचरगुरुः प्रभुः ॥१९०॥
190. evamuktaḥ sa māṁ prāha bhagavāँllokapūjitaḥ ,
maheśvaro mahātejāścarācaraguruḥ prabhuḥ.
190. evam uktaḥ sa mām prāha bhagavān loka-pūjitaḥ
mahā-īśvaraḥ mahā-tejāḥ cara-acara-guruḥ prabhuḥ
190. saḥ loka-pūjitaḥ bhagavān mahā-īśvaraḥ mahā-tejāḥ
cara-acara-guruḥ prabhuḥ evam uktaḥ mām prāha
190. Thus addressed, the revered Lord (Bhagavān), worshipped by the world, Maheśvara, the greatly effulgent, the (guru) of all animate and inanimate beings, the supreme master, spoke to me.
अजरश्चामरश्चैव भव दुःखविवर्जितः ।
शीलवान्गुणसंपन्नः सर्वज्ञः प्रियदर्शनः ॥१९१॥
191. ajaraścāmaraścaiva bhava duḥkhavivarjitaḥ ,
śīlavānguṇasaṁpannaḥ sarvajñaḥ priyadarśanaḥ.
191. a-jaraḥ ca a-maraḥ ca eva bhava duḥkha-vivarjitaḥ
śīla-vān guṇa-sampannaḥ sarva-jñaḥ priya-darśanaḥ
191. (tvam) a-jaraḥ ca a-maraḥ ca eva bhava duḥkha-vivarjitaḥ
śīla-vān guṇa-sampannaḥ sarva-jñaḥ priya-darśanaḥ ca
191. Become ageless and immortal, free from suffering (duḥkha), endowed with excellent character, rich in virtues, omniscient, and of pleasing appearance.
अक्षयं यौवनं तेऽस्तु तेजश्चैवानलोपमम् ।
क्षीरोदः सागरश्चैव यत्र यत्रेच्छसे मुने ॥१९२॥
192. akṣayaṁ yauvanaṁ te'stu tejaścaivānalopamam ,
kṣīrodaḥ sāgaraścaiva yatra yatrecchase mune.
192. akṣayaṃ yauvanaṃ te astu tejaḥ ca eva analopamam
kṣīrodaḥ sāgaraḥ ca eva yatra yatra icchase mune
192. mune te akṣayaṃ yauvanaṃ astu ca tejaḥ eva analopamam.
yatra yatra icchase,
kṣīrodaḥ sāgaraḥ ca eva.
192. O sage (muni), may your youth be imperishable, and your radiance indeed like fire. Wherever you desire, the milk ocean will be present.
तत्र ते भविता कामं सांनिध्यं पयसो निधेः ।
क्षीरोदनं च भुङ्क्ष्व त्वममृतेन समन्वितम् ॥१९३॥
193. tatra te bhavitā kāmaṁ sāṁnidhyaṁ payaso nidheḥ ,
kṣīrodanaṁ ca bhuṅkṣva tvamamṛtena samanvitam.
193. tatra te bhavitā kāmam sāṃnidhyam payasaḥ nidheḥ
kṣīrodanam ca bhuṅkṣva tvam amṛtena samanvitam
193. tatra te payasaḥ nidheḥ sāṃnidhyam kāmam bhavitā.
ca tvam amṛtena samanvitam kṣīrodanam bhuṅkṣva.
193. There, as you desire, the presence of the milk ocean will be for you. And you shall enjoy milk-rice (kṣīrodana) accompanied by nectar (amṛta).
बन्धुभिः सहितः कल्पं ततो मामुपयास्यसि ।
सांनिध्यमाश्रमे नित्यं करिष्यामि द्विजोत्तम ॥१९४॥
194. bandhubhiḥ sahitaḥ kalpaṁ tato māmupayāsyasi ,
sāṁnidhyamāśrame nityaṁ kariṣyāmi dvijottama.
194. bandhubhiḥ sahitaḥ kalpam tataḥ mām upayāsyasi
sāṃnidhyam āśrame nityam kariṣyāmi dvijottama
194. (tvam) bandhubhiḥ sahitaḥ kalpam tataḥ mām upayāsyasi.
dvijottama,
(aham) āśrame nityam sāṃnidhyam kariṣyāmi.
194. Accompanied by your relatives, you will then come to me for a cosmic age (kalpa). O best of brahmins, I will always maintain my presence in your hermitage.
तिष्ठ वत्स यथाकामं नोत्कण्ठां कर्तुमर्हसि ।
स्मृतः स्मृतश्च ते विप्र सदा दास्यामि दर्शनम् ॥१९५॥
195. tiṣṭha vatsa yathākāmaṁ notkaṇṭhāṁ kartumarhasi ,
smṛtaḥ smṛtaśca te vipra sadā dāsyāmi darśanam.
195. tiṣṭha vatsa yathākāmam na utkaṇṭhām kartum arhasi
smṛtaḥ smṛtaḥ ca te vipra sadā dāsyāmi darśanam
195. vatsa,
yathākāmam tiṣṭha.
utkaṇṭhām kartum na arhasi.
vipra,
te smṛtaḥ smṛtaḥ ca sadā darśanam dāsyāmi.
195. Stay, my child, as you wish. You should not feel any longing. O brahmin, whenever you remember me, I will always grant you my vision.
एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभः ।
ममेशानो वरं दत्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ॥१९६॥
196. evamuktvā sa bhagavānsūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ ,
mameśāno varaṁ dattvā tatraivāntaradhīyata.
196. evam uktvā sa bhagavān sūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ mama
īśānaḥ varam dattvā tatra eva antaradhīyata
196. sa bhagavān sūryakoṭisamaprabhaḥ evam uktvā mama
īśānaḥ varam dattvā tatra eva antaradhīyata
196. Having spoken thus, that divine being (bhagavān), radiant like a crore of suns, granted me a boon as my lord and then vanished right there.
एवं दृष्टो मया कृष्ण देवदेवः समाधिना ।
तदवाप्तं च मे सर्वं यदुक्तं तेन धीमता ॥१९७॥
197. evaṁ dṛṣṭo mayā kṛṣṇa devadevaḥ samādhinā ,
tadavāptaṁ ca me sarvaṁ yaduktaṁ tena dhīmatā.
197. evam dṛṣṭaḥ mayā kṛṣṇa devadevaḥ samādhinā tat
avāptam ca me sarvam yat uktam tena dhīmatā
197. kṛṣṇa mayā samādhinā devadevaḥ evam dṛṣṭaḥ ca
tena dhīmatā yat sarvam uktam tat me avāptam
197. O Kṛṣṇa, I beheld the God of gods (devadeva) in this manner through deep meditation (samādhi). And all that was spoken by that wise one has now been attained by me.
प्रत्यक्षं चैव ते कृष्ण पश्य सिद्धान्व्यवस्थितान् ।
ऋषीन्विद्याधरान्यक्षान्गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा ॥१९८॥
198. pratyakṣaṁ caiva te kṛṣṇa paśya siddhānvyavasthitān ,
ṛṣīnvidyādharānyakṣāngandharvāpsarasastathā.
198. pratyakṣam ca eva te kṛṣṇa paśya siddhān vyavasthitān
ṛṣīn vidyādharān yakṣān gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā
198. kṛṣṇa te ca eva pratyakṣam paśya vyavasthitān siddhān
ṛṣīn vidyādharān yakṣān gandharvāpsarasaḥ tathā
198. And indeed, O Kṛṣṇa, behold before your very eyes the perfected beings (siddhas) who are present, as well as the sages (ṛṣis), knowledge-bearers (vidyādharas), yakṣas, gandharvas, and apsarases.
पश्य वृक्षान्मनोरम्यान्सदा पुष्पफलान्वितान् ।
सर्वर्तुकुसुमैर्युक्तान्स्निग्धपत्रान्सुशाखिनः ।
सर्वमेतन्महाबाहो दिव्यभावसमन्वितम् ॥१९९॥
199. paśya vṛkṣānmanoramyānsadā puṣpaphalānvitān ,
sarvartukusumairyuktānsnigdhapatrānsuśākhinaḥ ,

199. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), behold the enchanting trees, always laden with flowers and fruits, adorned with blossoms of all seasons, possessing glossy leaves and beautiful branches. All this is imbued with a divine essence.
