धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
क्षत्रतेजा ब्रह्मचारी कौमारादपि पाण्डवः ।
तेन संयुगमेष्यन्ति मन्दा विलपतो मम ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kṣatratejā brahmacārī kaumārādapi pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tena saṁyugameṣyanti mandā vilapato mama.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'My foolish sons will go to battle against that Pāṇḍava, who has possessed the prowess of a warrior and observed chastity (brahmacarya) since boyhood, while I lament.'
दुर्योधन निवर्तस्व युद्धाद्भरतसत्तम ।
न हि युद्धं प्रशंसन्ति सर्वावस्थमरिंदम ॥२॥
2. duryodhana nivartasva yuddhādbharatasattama ,
na hi yuddhaṁ praśaṁsanti sarvāvasthamariṁdama.

hi yuddham praśaṃsanti sarvāvastham ariṃdama
2. O Duryodhana, O best among the Bhāratas, turn back from battle! For, O subduer of enemies, people do not praise battle under all circumstances.
अलमर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते सहामात्यस्य जीवितुम् ।
प्रयच्छ पाण्डुपुत्राणां यथोचितमरिंदम ॥३॥
3. alamardhaṁ pṛthivyāste sahāmātyasya jīvitum ,
prayaccha pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ yathocitamariṁdama.
3. alam ardham pṛthivyāḥ te sahāmātyasya jīvitum
prayaccha pāṇḍuputrāṇām yathocitam ariṃdama
3. Half of the earth is enough for you, along with your ministers, to live. O subduer of enemies, give to the sons of Pāṇḍu what is appropriate.
एतद्धि कुरवः सर्वे मन्यन्ते धर्मसंहितम् ।
यत्त्वं प्रशान्तिमिच्छेथाः पाण्डुपुत्रैर्महात्मभिः ॥४॥
4. etaddhi kuravaḥ sarve manyante dharmasaṁhitam ,
yattvaṁ praśāntimicchethāḥ pāṇḍuputrairmahātmabhiḥ.
4. etat hi kuravaḥ sarve manyante dharmasaṃhitam yat
tvam praśāntim icchethāḥ pāṇḍuputraiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
4. Indeed, all the Kauravas consider it to be consistent with the moral code (dharma) that you should desire profound peace with the noble sons of Pāṇḍu.
अङ्गेमां समवेक्षस्व पुत्र स्वामेव वाहिनीम् ।
जात एव तव स्रावस्त्वं तु मोहान्न बुध्यसे ॥५॥
5. aṅgemāṁ samavekṣasva putra svāmeva vāhinīm ,
jāta eva tava srāvastvaṁ tu mohānna budhyase.
5. aṅga imām samavekṣasva putra svām eva vāhinīm
jāta eva tava srāvaḥ tvam tu mohāt na budhyase
5. O dear son, just behold this army of yours! Your decline has already begun, but you, due to delusion, do not comprehend it.
न ह्यहं युद्धमिच्छामि नैतदिच्छति बाह्लिकः ।
न च भीष्मो न च द्रोणो नाश्वत्थामा न संजयः ॥६॥
6. na hyahaṁ yuddhamicchāmi naitadicchati bāhlikaḥ ,
na ca bhīṣmo na ca droṇo nāśvatthāmā na saṁjayaḥ.
6. na hi aham yuddham icchāmi na etat icchati bāhlikaḥ
na ca bhīṣmaḥ na ca droṇaḥ na aśvatthāmā na sañjayaḥ
6. Indeed, I do not desire war, nor does Bāhlika desire it. Neither Bhīṣma, nor Droṇa, nor Aśvatthāmā, nor Sañjaya desires it.
न सोमदत्तो न शल्यो न कृपो युद्धमिच्छति ।
सत्यव्रतः पुरुमित्रो जयो भूरिश्रवास्तथा ॥७॥
7. na somadatto na śalyo na kṛpo yuddhamicchati ,
satyavrataḥ purumitro jayo bhūriśravāstathā.
7. na somadattaḥ na śalyaḥ na kṛpaḥ yuddham icchati
satyavrataḥ purumitraḥ jayaḥ bhūriśravāḥ tathā
7. Neither Somadatta, nor Śalya, nor Kṛpa desires war. Similarly, Satyavrata, Purumitra, Jaya, and Bhūriśravas also do not desire it.
येषु संप्रतितिष्ठेयुः कुरवः पीडिताः परैः ।
ते युद्धं नाभिनन्दन्ति तत्तुभ्यं तात रोचताम् ॥८॥
8. yeṣu saṁpratitiṣṭheyuḥ kuravaḥ pīḍitāḥ paraiḥ ,
te yuddhaṁ nābhinandanti tattubhyaṁ tāta rocatām.
8. yeṣu saṃpratitiṣṭheyuḥ kuravaḥ pīḍitāḥ paraiḥ te
yuddham na abhinandanti tat tubhyam tāta rocatām
8. Those in whom the Kurus, oppressed by enemies, would find firm refuge, do not favor war. May this be pleasing to you, dear one.
न त्वं करोषि कामेन कर्णः कारयिता तव ।
दुःशासनश्च पापात्मा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ॥९॥
9. na tvaṁ karoṣi kāmena karṇaḥ kārayitā tava ,
duḥśāsanaśca pāpātmā śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ.
9. na tvam karoṣi kāmena karṇaḥ kārayitā tava
duḥśāsanaḥ ca pāpātmā śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
9. You do not act out of your own desire (kāma); Karna is your instigator. And Duhshasana, the wicked soul (pāpātman), along with Shakuni, the son of Subala, are likewise (instigators).
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
नाहं भवति न द्रोणे नाश्वत्थाम्नि न संजये ।
न विकर्णे न काम्बोजे न कृपे न च बाह्लिके ॥१०॥
10. duryodhana uvāca ,
nāhaṁ bhavati na droṇe nāśvatthāmni na saṁjaye ,
na vikarṇe na kāmboje na kṛpe na ca bāhlike.
10. duryodhanaḥ uvāca na aham bhavati na droṇe na aśvatthāmni
na saṃjaye na vikarṇe na kāmboje na kṛpe na ca bāhlīke
10. Duryodhana said: "I place no reliance on you, nor on Drona, nor on Ashwatthama, nor on Sanjaya, nor on Vikarna, nor on Kamboja, nor on Kripa, nor on Bahlika."
सत्यव्रते पुरुमित्रे भूरिश्रवसि वा पुनः ।
अन्येषु वा तावकेषु भारं कृत्वा समाह्वये ॥११॥
11. satyavrate purumitre bhūriśravasi vā punaḥ ,
anyeṣu vā tāvakeṣu bhāraṁ kṛtvā samāhvaye.
11. satyavrate purumitre bhūriśravasi vā punaḥ
anyeṣu vā tāvakeṣu bhāram kṛtvā samāhvaye
11. Nor on Satyavrata, Purumitra, or Bhurishravas, or indeed on any other of your own (tāvaka) people. Having taken the burden (bhāra) upon myself, I challenge (samāhvaye).
अहं च तात कर्णश्च रणयज्ञं वितत्य वै ।
युधिष्ठिरं पशुं कृत्वा दीक्षितौ भरतर्षभ ॥१२॥
12. ahaṁ ca tāta karṇaśca raṇayajñaṁ vitatya vai ,
yudhiṣṭhiraṁ paśuṁ kṛtvā dīkṣitau bharatarṣabha.
12. aham ca tāta karṇaḥ ca raṇayajñam vitatya vai
yudhiṣṭhiram paśum kṛtvā dīkṣitau bharatarṣabha
12. O best of Bharatas, father, Karna and I will perform a battle-sacrifice (raṇayajña), making Yudhishthira the sacrificial animal, and thereby become consecrated (dīkṣita).
रथो वेदी स्रुवः खड्गो गदा स्रुक्कवचं सदः ।
चातुर्होत्रं च धुर्या मे शरा दर्भा हविर्यशः ॥१३॥
13. ratho vedī sruvaḥ khaḍgo gadā srukkavacaṁ sadaḥ ,
cāturhotraṁ ca dhuryā me śarā darbhā haviryaśaḥ.
13. rathaḥ vedī sruvaḥ khaḍgaḥ gadā sruk kavacam sadaḥ
cāturhotram ca dhuryā me śarā darbhā haviḥ yaśaḥ
13. In this (battle-sacrifice), the chariot is the altar (vedī), the sword (khaḍga) is the ladle (sruva), the mace (gadā) is the offering spoon (sruc), and the armor (kavaca) is the sacrificial hall (sadas). My chief warriors (dhuryā) represent the four priests (cāturhotra), the arrows (śara) are the sacred grass (darbha), and glory (yaśas) is the oblation (havis).
आत्मयज्ञेन नृपते इष्ट्वा वैवस्वतं रणे ।
विजित्य स्वयमेष्यावो हतामित्रौ श्रिया वृतौ ॥१४॥
14. ātmayajñena nṛpate iṣṭvā vaivasvataṁ raṇe ,
vijitya svayameṣyāvo hatāmitrau śriyā vṛtau.
14. ātmayajñena nṛpate iṣṭvā vaivasvatam raṇe
vijitya svayam eṣyāvaḥ hatāmitrau śriyā vṛtau
14. O King, by offering a sacrifice of our very selves (ātmayajña) in battle, we shall appease Yama (Vaivasvata). Having conquered, we two will return victorious, our enemies slain and ourselves surrounded by glory.
अहं च तात कर्णश्च भ्राता दुःशासनश्च मे ।
एते वयं हनिष्यामः पाण्डवान्समरे त्रयः ॥१५॥
15. ahaṁ ca tāta karṇaśca bhrātā duḥśāsanaśca me ,
ete vayaṁ haniṣyāmaḥ pāṇḍavānsamare trayaḥ.
15. aham ca tāta karṇaḥ ca bhrātā duḥśāsanaḥ ca me
ete vayam haniṣyāmaḥ pāṇḍavān samare trayaḥ
15. O father, Karna, my brother Duhshasana, and I - we three will slay the Pandavas in battle.
अहं हि पाण्डवान्हत्वा प्रशास्ता पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
मां वा हत्वा पाण्डुपुत्रा भोक्तारः पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥१६॥
16. ahaṁ hi pāṇḍavānhatvā praśāstā pṛthivīmimām ,
māṁ vā hatvā pāṇḍuputrā bhoktāraḥ pṛthivīmimām.
16. aham hi pāṇḍavān hatvā praśāstā pṛthivīm imām |
mām vā hatvā pāṇḍuputrāḥ bhoktāraḥ pṛthivīm imām
16. Indeed, either I will rule this earth after killing the Pāṇḍavas, or the sons of Pāṇḍu will possess this earth after killing me.
त्यक्तं मे जीवितं राजन्धनं राज्यं च पार्थिव ।
न जातु पाण्डवैः सार्धं वसेयमहमच्युत ॥१७॥
17. tyaktaṁ me jīvitaṁ rājandhanaṁ rājyaṁ ca pārthiva ,
na jātu pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ vaseyamahamacyuta.
17. tyaktam me jīvitam rājan dhanam rājyam ca pārthiva
| na jātu pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham vaseyam aham acyuta
17. My life, wealth, and kingdom are abandoned, O King, O ruler of men. I shall certainly never live with the Pāṇḍavas, O Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa).
यावद्धि सूच्यास्तीक्ष्णाया विध्येदग्रेण मारिष ।
तावदप्यपरित्याज्यं भूमेर्नः पाण्डवान्प्रति ॥१८॥
18. yāvaddhi sūcyāstīkṣṇāyā vidhyedagreṇa māriṣa ,
tāvadapyaparityājyaṁ bhūmernaḥ pāṇḍavānprati.
18. yāvat hi sūcyāḥ tīkṣṇāyāḥ vidhyet agreṇa māriṣa |
tāvat api aparityājyam bhūmeḥ naḥ pāṇḍavān prati
18. Indeed, O esteemed one, we will not give up even as much land as the tip of a sharp needle can pierce to the Pāṇḍavas.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
सर्वान्वस्तात शोचामि त्यक्तो दुर्योधनो मया ।
ये मन्दमनुयास्यध्वं यान्तं वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥१९॥
19. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
sarvānvastāta śocāmi tyakto duryodhano mayā ,
ye mandamanuyāsyadhvaṁ yāntaṁ vaivasvatakṣayam.
19. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | sarvān vaḥ tāta śocāmi tyaktaḥ duryodhanaḥ
mayā | ye mandam anuyāsyadhvam yāntam vaivasvatakṣayam
19. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'O dear children, I grieve for all of you. Duryodhana has been abandoned by me, and all of you who follow this foolish one are going towards the abode of Yama (death).'
रुरूणामिव यूथेषु व्याघ्राः प्रहरतां वराः ।
वरान्वरान्हनिष्यन्ति समेता युधि पाण्डवाः ॥२०॥
20. rurūṇāmiva yūtheṣu vyāghrāḥ praharatāṁ varāḥ ,
varānvarānhaniṣyanti sametā yudhi pāṇḍavāḥ.
20. rurūṇām iva yūtheṣu vyāghrāḥ praharatām varāḥ
varān varān haniṣyanti sametāḥ yudhi pāṇḍavāḥ
20. The Pandavas, gathered in battle, will kill the most distinguished warriors. They are like tigers among herds of deer, indeed, they are the finest among all attackers.
प्रतीपमिव मे भाति युयुधानेन भारती ।
व्यस्ता सीमन्तिनी त्रस्ता प्रमृष्टा दीर्घबाहुना ॥२१॥
21. pratīpamiva me bhāti yuyudhānena bhāratī ,
vyastā sīmantinī trastā pramṛṣṭā dīrghabāhunā.
21. pratīpam iva me bhāti yuyudhānena bhāratī
vyastā sīmantinī trastā pramṛṣṭā dīrghabāhunā
21. To me, it appears adverse, as if Bhāratī (the glory of the Bhāratas), like a dishevelled, terrified, and defiled married woman (sīmantinī), has been ravaged by Yuyudhāna, the long-armed.
संपूर्णं पूरयन्भूयो बलं पार्थस्य माधवः ।
शैनेयः समरे स्थाता बीजवत्प्रवपञ्शरान् ॥२२॥
22. saṁpūrṇaṁ pūrayanbhūyo balaṁ pārthasya mādhavaḥ ,
śaineyaḥ samare sthātā bījavatpravapañśarān.
22. saṃpūrṇam pūrayan bhūyaḥ balam pārthasya mādhavaḥ
śaineyaḥ samare sthātā bījavat pravapan śarān
22. Mādhava (Krishna) will completely replenish Pārtha's (Arjuna's) strength again, and Śaineya (Sātyaki) will stand in battle, scattering arrows like seeds.
सेनामुखे प्रयुद्धानां भीमसेनो भविष्यति ।
तं सर्वे संश्रयिष्यन्ति प्राकारमकुतोभयम् ॥२३॥
23. senāmukhe prayuddhānāṁ bhīmaseno bhaviṣyati ,
taṁ sarve saṁśrayiṣyanti prākāramakutobhayam.
23. senāmukhe prayuddhānām bhīmasenaḥ bhaviṣyati
tam sarve saṃśrayiṣyanti prākāram akutobhayam
23. Bhīmasena will lead the combatants at the forefront of the army. All will take refuge in him, who will be like an unassailable fortress.
यदा द्रक्ष्यसि भीमेन कुञ्जरान्विनिपातितान् ।
विशीर्णदन्तान्गिर्याभान्भिन्नकुम्भान्सशोणितान् ॥२४॥
24. yadā drakṣyasi bhīmena kuñjarānvinipātitān ,
viśīrṇadantāngiryābhānbhinnakumbhānsaśoṇitān.
24. yada drakṣyasi bhīmena kuñjarān vinipātitān
viśīrṇadantān giryābhān bhinnakumbhān sasoṇitān
24. When you see the elephants, resembling mountains, struck down by Bhīma, with their tusks shattered, their temples burst, and covered in blood,
तानभिप्रेक्ष्य संग्रामे विशीर्णानिव पर्वतान् ।
भीतो भीमस्य संस्पर्शात्स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे ॥२५॥
25. tānabhiprekṣya saṁgrāme viśīrṇāniva parvatān ,
bhīto bhīmasya saṁsparśātsmartāsi vacanasya me.
25. tān abhiprekṣya saṅgrāme viśīrṇān iva parvatān
bhītaḥ bhīmasya saṃsparśāt smartā asi vacanasya me
25. When you see those (elephants) in battle, shattered like mountains, you will be terrified by Bhīma's contact and remember my words.
निर्दग्धं भीमसेनेन सैन्यं हतरथद्विपम् ।
गतिमग्नेरिव प्रेक्ष्य स्मर्तासि वचनस्य मे ॥२६॥
26. nirdagdhaṁ bhīmasenena sainyaṁ hatarathadvipam ,
gatimagneriva prekṣya smartāsi vacanasya me.
26. nirdagdham bhīmasenena sainyam hatarathadvipam
gatim agneḥ iva prekṣya smartā asi vacanasya me
26. When you witness the army, with its chariots and elephants destroyed and consumed by Bhīmasena's fury, just like the destructive path of fire, you will remember my words.
महद्वो भयमागामि न चेच्छाम्यथ पाण्डवैः ।
गदया भीमसेनेन हताः शममुपैष्यथ ॥२७॥
27. mahadvo bhayamāgāmi na cecchāmyatha pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
gadayā bhīmasenena hatāḥ śamamupaiṣyatha.
27. mahat vaḥ bhayam āgāmi na cet icchāmi athā
pāṇḍavaiḥ gadayā bhīmasenena hatāḥ śamam upaiṣyatha
27. A great fear is coming for you all. And if I (Vidura) cease to desire (your well-being, or reconciliation) with the Pāṇḍavas, then, struck down by Bhīmasena's mace, you will attain ultimate peace (death).
महावनमिव छिन्नं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि पातितम् ।
बलं कुरूणां संग्रामे तदा स्मर्तासि मे वचः ॥२८॥
28. mahāvanamiva chinnaṁ yadā drakṣyasi pātitam ,
balaṁ kurūṇāṁ saṁgrāme tadā smartāsi me vacaḥ.
28. mahāvanam iva chinnam yadā drakṣyasi pātitaṃ
balam kurūṇām saṃgrāme tadā smartā asi me vacaḥ
28. When you see the force of the Kurus struck down in battle, like a great forest that has been felled, then you will remember my words.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एतावदुक्त्वा राजा तु स सर्वान्पृथिवीपतीन् ।
अनुभाष्य महाराज पुनः पप्रच्छ संजयम् ॥२९॥
29. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
etāvaduktvā rājā tu sa sarvānpṛthivīpatīn ,
anubhāṣya mahārāja punaḥ papraccha saṁjayam.
29. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca etāvat uktvā rājā tu sa sarvān
pṛthivīpatīn anubhāṣya mahārāja punaḥ papraccha sañjayam
29. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having spoken thus, that king, O great king, after addressing all the rulers (pṛthivīpatin), again questioned Sañjaya.
