वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
यैषा ते तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता ।
तां त्वां संवरणस्यार्थे वरयामि विभावसो ॥१॥
1. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
yaiṣā te tapatī nāma sāvitryavarajā sutā ,
tāṁ tvāṁ saṁvaraṇasyārthe varayāmi vibhāvaso.

1. Vasiṣṭha said: "O Vivāvasu, I ask for your daughter, Tapati by name, who is Sāvitrī's younger sister, for Saṃvaraṇa."
स हि राजा बृहत्कीर्तिर्धर्मार्थविदुदारधीः ।
युक्तः संवरणो भर्ता दुहितुस्ते विहंगम ॥२॥
2. sa hi rājā bṛhatkīrtirdharmārthavidudāradhīḥ ,
yuktaḥ saṁvaraṇo bhartā duhituste vihaṁgama.
2. sa hi rājā bṛhatkīrtiḥ dharmārthavit udāradhīḥ
yuktaḥ saṃvaraṇaḥ bhartā duhituḥ te vihaṅgama
2. Indeed, that king, Saṃvaraṇa, who has great fame, understands the constitution (dharma) and purpose (artha), and possesses a noble intellect, is a fitting husband for your daughter, O bird (Vihaṅgama).
गन्धर्व उवाच ।
इत्युक्तः सविता तेन ददानीत्येव निश्चितः ।
प्रत्यभाषत तं विप्रं प्रतिनन्द्य दिवाकरः ॥३॥
3. gandharva uvāca ,
ityuktaḥ savitā tena dadānītyeva niścitaḥ ,
pratyabhāṣata taṁ vipraṁ pratinandya divākaraḥ.
3. gandharvaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ savitā tena dadāmi iti eva
niścitaḥ pratyabhāṣata tam vipram pratinandya divākaraḥ
3. The Gandharva said: "Thus addressed by Vasiṣṭha, Savitā, the sun-god (Divākara), being resolved to grant the request, replied to that brahmin, having first welcomed him, saying, 'I give (my daughter)."'
वरः संवरणो राज्ञां त्वमृषीणां वरो मुने ।
तपती योषितां श्रेष्ठा किमन्यत्रापवर्जनात् ॥४॥
4. varaḥ saṁvaraṇo rājñāṁ tvamṛṣīṇāṁ varo mune ,
tapatī yoṣitāṁ śreṣṭhā kimanyatrāpavarjanāt.
4. varaḥ saṃvaraṇaḥ rājñām tvam ṛṣīṇām varaḥ mune
tapatī yoṣitām śreṣṭhā kim anyatra apavarjanāt
4. O sage, you are the foremost among sages, and Saṃvaraṇa is the foremost among kings. Tapatī is the best among women. What further distinctions need to be made?
ततः सर्वानवद्याङ्गीं तपतीं तपनः स्वयम् ।
ददौ संवरणस्यार्थे वसिष्ठाय महात्मने ।
प्रतिजग्राह तां कन्यां महर्षिस्तपतीं तदा ॥५॥
5. tataḥ sarvānavadyāṅgīṁ tapatīṁ tapanaḥ svayam ,
dadau saṁvaraṇasyārthe vasiṣṭhāya mahātmane ,
pratijagrāha tāṁ kanyāṁ maharṣistapatīṁ tadā.
5. tataḥ sarvānavadyāṅgīm tapatīm
tapanaḥ svayam dadau saṃvaraṇasya arthe
vasiṣṭhāya mahātmane pratijagrāha
tām kanyām maharṣiḥ tapatīm tadā
5. Then, the Sun god (tapana) himself gave Tapatī, whose limbs were entirely faultless, to the great-souled (mahātman) Vasiṣṭha for the sake of Saṃvaraṇa. The great sage (maharṣi) then accepted that maiden, Tapatī.
वसिष्ठोऽथ विसृष्टश्च पुनरेवाजगाम ह ।
यत्र विख्यातकीर्तिः स कुरूणामृषभोऽभवत् ॥६॥
6. vasiṣṭho'tha visṛṣṭaśca punarevājagāma ha ,
yatra vikhyātakīrtiḥ sa kurūṇāmṛṣabho'bhavat.
6. vasiṣṭhaḥ atha visṛṣṭaḥ ca punar eva ājagāma ha
yatra vikhyātakīrtiḥ sa kurūṇām ṛṣabhaḥ abhavat
6. Then Vasiṣṭha, having been dismissed, returned again to where that celebrated chief (ṛṣabha) of the Kurus, whose fame was widely known, resided.
स राजा मन्मथाविष्टस्तद्गतेनान्तरात्मना ।
दृष्ट्वा च देवकन्यां तां तपतीं चारुहासिनीम् ।
वसिष्ठेन सहायान्तीं संहृष्टोऽभ्यधिकं बभौ ॥७॥
7. sa rājā manmathāviṣṭastadgatenāntarātmanā ,
dṛṣṭvā ca devakanyāṁ tāṁ tapatīṁ cāruhāsinīm ,
vasiṣṭhena sahāyāntīṁ saṁhṛṣṭo'bhyadhikaṁ babhau.
7. sa rājā manmathāviṣṭaḥ tadgatena
antarātmanā dṛṣṭvā ca devakanyām tām
tapatīm cāruhāsinīm vasiṣṭhena saha
āyāntīm saṃhṛṣṭaḥ abhyadhikam babhau
7. That king, overcome by the god of love (manmatha), his inner self (antarātman) completely absorbed in her, shone exceedingly with delight after seeing that divine maiden, Tapatī, with her charming smile, arriving with Vasiṣṭha.
कृच्छ्रे द्वादशरात्रे तु तस्य राज्ञः समापिते ।
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा वसिष्ठो भगवानृषिः ॥८॥
8. kṛcchre dvādaśarātre tu tasya rājñaḥ samāpite ,
ājagāma viśuddhātmā vasiṣṭho bhagavānṛṣiḥ.
8. kṛcchre dvādaśarātre tu tasya rājñaḥ samāpite
ājagāma viśuddhātmā vasiṣṭhaḥ bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
8. But when that king's twelve-night penance (kṛcchra) was completed, the revered (bhagavān) sage (ṛṣi) Vasiṣṭha, whose soul (ātman) was pure, arrived.
तपसाराध्य वरदं देवं गोपतिमीश्वरम् ।
लेभे संवरणो भार्यां वसिष्ठस्यैव तेजसा ॥९॥
9. tapasārādhya varadaṁ devaṁ gopatimīśvaram ,
lebhe saṁvaraṇo bhāryāṁ vasiṣṭhasyaiva tejasā.
9. tapasā ārādhya varadam devam gopatim īśvaram
lebhe saṃvaraṇaḥ bhāryām vasiṣṭhasya eva tejasā
9. King Saṃvaraṇa, having propitiated the boon-bestowing god, the lord and master, through his austerities (tapas), obtained a wife, indeed by the power of Vasiṣṭha.
ततस्तस्मिन्गिरिश्रेष्ठे देवगन्धर्वसेविते ।
जग्राह विधिवत्पाणिं तपत्याः स नरर्षभः ॥१०॥
10. tatastasmingiriśreṣṭhe devagandharvasevite ,
jagrāha vidhivatpāṇiṁ tapatyāḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ.
10. tataḥ tasmin giriśreṣṭhe devagandharvasevite
jagrāha vidhivat pāṇim tapatyāḥ sa nararṣabhaḥ
10. Thereupon, on that excellent mountain frequented by gods and gandharvas, that foremost of men (King Saṃvaraṇa) took Tapatī's hand according to ritual (vidhivat).
वसिष्ठेनाभ्यनुज्ञातस्तस्मिन्नेव धराधरे ।
सोऽकामयत राजर्षिर्विहर्तुं सह भार्यया ॥११॥
11. vasiṣṭhenābhyanujñātastasminneva dharādhare ,
so'kāmayata rājarṣirvihartuṁ saha bhāryayā.
11. vasiṣṭhena abhyanujñātaḥ tasmin eva dharādhare
saḥ akāmayata rājarṣiḥ vihartum saha bhāryayā
11. Having been granted permission by Vasiṣṭha, that royal sage (King Saṃvaraṇa) desired to sport with his wife on that very same mountain.
ततः पुरे च राष्ट्रे च वाहनेषु बलेषु च ।
आदिदेश महीपालस्तमेव सचिवं तदा ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ pure ca rāṣṭre ca vāhaneṣu baleṣu ca ,
ādideśa mahīpālastameva sacivaṁ tadā.
12. tataḥ pure ca rāṣṭre ca vāhaneṣu baleṣu
ca ādideśa mahīpālaḥ tam eva sacivam tadā
12. Thereupon, the king (mahīpāla) then instructed that very same minister concerning matters of the city, the kingdom, the conveyances, and the military forces.
नृपतिं त्वभ्यनुज्ञाय वसिष्ठोऽथापचक्रमे ।
सोऽपि राजा गिरौ तस्मिन्विजहारामरोपमः ॥१३॥
13. nṛpatiṁ tvabhyanujñāya vasiṣṭho'thāpacakrame ,
so'pi rājā girau tasminvijahārāmaropamaḥ.
13. nṛpatim tu abhyanujñāya vasiṣṭhaḥ atha apacakrame
saḥ api rājā girau tasmin vijahāra amara upamaḥ
13. But Vasiṣṭha, having granted permission to the king (nṛpati), then departed. And that king, who was like a god, also sported on that mountain.
ततो द्वादश वर्षाणि काननेषु जलेषु च ।
रेमे तस्मिन्गिरौ राजा तयैव सह भार्यया ॥१४॥
14. tato dvādaśa varṣāṇi kānaneṣu jaleṣu ca ,
reme tasmingirau rājā tayaiva saha bhāryayā.
14. tataḥ dvādaśa varṣāṇi kānaneṣu jaleṣu ca reme
tasmin girau rājā tayā eva saha bhāryayā
14. Then, for twelve years, the king delighted himself in the forests, in the waters, and on that mountain, accompanied by that very wife.
तस्य राज्ञः पुरे तस्मिन्समा द्वादश सर्वशः ।
न ववर्ष सहस्राक्षो राष्ट्रे चैवास्य सर्वशः ॥१५॥
15. tasya rājñaḥ pure tasminsamā dvādaśa sarvaśaḥ ,
na vavarṣa sahasrākṣo rāṣṭre caivāsya sarvaśaḥ.
15. tasya rājñaḥ pure tasmin samāḥ dvādaśa sarvaśaḥ na
vavarṣa sahasrākṣaḥ rāṣṭre ca eva asya sarvaśaḥ
15. For twelve whole years, the thousand-eyed Indra (sahasrākṣa) did not rain in that city of the king, nor indeed anywhere throughout his entire kingdom.
तत्क्षुधार्तैर्निरानन्दैः शवभूतैस्तदा नरैः ।
अभवत्प्रेतराजस्य पुरं प्रेतैरिवावृतम् ॥१६॥
16. tatkṣudhārtairnirānandaiḥ śavabhūtaistadā naraiḥ ,
abhavatpretarājasya puraṁ pretairivāvṛtam.
16. tat kṣudhārtaiḥ nirānandaiḥ śavabhūtaiḥ tadā naraiḥ
abhavat pretarājasya puram pretaiḥ iva āvṛtam
16. Then, that city became filled with people who were tormented by hunger, devoid of joy, and resembled corpses. It was as if it had become the city of Yama, the king of ghosts, overrun by spirits.
ततस्तत्तादृशं दृष्ट्वा स एव भगवानृषिः ।
अभ्यपद्यत धर्मात्मा वसिष्ठो राजसत्तमम् ॥१७॥
17. tatastattādṛśaṁ dṛṣṭvā sa eva bhagavānṛṣiḥ ,
abhyapadyata dharmātmā vasiṣṭho rājasattamam.
17. tataḥ tat tādṛśam dṛṣṭvā saḥ eva bhagavān ṛṣiḥ
abhyapadyata dharmātmā vasiṣṭhaḥ rājasattamam
17. Then, having witnessed such a state, that very revered sage Vasiṣṭha, who was righteous in spirit (dharmātmā), approached the best of kings.
तं च पार्थिवशार्दूलमानयामास तत्पुरम् ।
तपत्या सहितं राजन्नुषितं द्वादशीः समाः ॥१८॥
18. taṁ ca pārthivaśārdūlamānayāmāsa tatpuram ,
tapatyā sahitaṁ rājannuṣitaṁ dvādaśīḥ samāḥ.
18. tam ca pārthivaśārdūlam ānayāmāsa tat puram
tapatyā sahitam rājan uṣitam dvādaśīḥ samāḥ
18. And, O king, he brought that tiger among kings, who had resided with Tapati for twelve years, back to that city.
ततः प्रवृष्टस्तत्रासीद्यथापूर्वं सुरारिहा ।
तस्मिन्नृपतिशार्दूले प्रविष्टे नगरं पुनः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ pravṛṣṭastatrāsīdyathāpūrvaṁ surārihā ,
tasminnṛpatiśārdūle praviṣṭe nagaraṁ punaḥ.
19. tataḥ pravṛṣṭaḥ tatra āsīt yathāpūrvam surārihā
| tasmin nṛpatiśārdūle praviṣṭe nagaram punaḥ
19. Then, the destroyer of the demons (surārihā) was present there, having returned as he had been before. When that lion among kings had re-entered the city again,
ततः सराष्ट्रं मुमुदे तत्पुरं परया मुदा ।
तेन पार्थिवमुख्येन भावितं भावितात्मना ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ sarāṣṭraṁ mumude tatpuraṁ parayā mudā ,
tena pārthivamukhyena bhāvitaṁ bhāvitātmanā.
20. tataḥ sarāṣṭram mumude tatpuram parayā mudā
| tena pārthivamukhyena bhāvitam bhāvitātmanā
20. then that city, along with its kingdom, rejoiced with supreme delight. It had been made prosperous by that chief of kings, who possessed a cultivated self (ātman).
ततो द्वादश वर्षाणि पुनरीजे नराधिपः ।
पत्न्या तपत्या सहितो यथा शक्रो मरुत्पतिः ॥२१॥
21. tato dvādaśa varṣāṇi punarīje narādhipaḥ ,
patnyā tapatyā sahito yathā śakro marutpatiḥ.
21. tataḥ dvādaśa varṣāṇi punaḥ īje narādhipaḥ |
patnyā tapatyā sahitaḥ yathā śakraḥ marutpatiḥ
21. Then, the king performed Vedic rituals (yajña) again for twelve years, accompanied by his wife Tapatī, just like Indra, the lord of the Maruts.
एवमासीन्महाभागा तपती नाम पौर्विकी ।
तव वैवस्वती पार्थ तापत्यस्त्वं यया मतः ॥२२॥
22. evamāsīnmahābhāgā tapatī nāma paurvikī ,
tava vaivasvatī pārtha tāpatyastvaṁ yayā mataḥ.
22. evam āsīt mahābhāgā tapatī nāma paurvikī | tava
vaivasvatī pārtha tāpatyaḥ tvam yayā mataḥ
22. Thus was the greatly fortunate lady named Tapatī, an ancient ancestress. She is your Vaivasvatī (daughter of Vivasvat), O Pārtha, through whom you are considered Tapatya (a descendant of Tapatī).
तस्यां संजनयामास कुरुं संवरणो नृपः ।
तपत्यां तपतां श्रेष्ठ तापत्यस्त्वं ततोऽर्जुन ॥२३॥
23. tasyāṁ saṁjanayāmāsa kuruṁ saṁvaraṇo nṛpaḥ ,
tapatyāṁ tapatāṁ śreṣṭha tāpatyastvaṁ tato'rjuna.
23. tasyām sañjanayām āsa kurum saṃvaraṇaḥ nṛpaḥ |
tapatyām tapatām śreṣṭha tāpatyaḥ tvam tataḥ arjuna
23. King Saṃvaraṇa begot Kuru in her, Tapatī. Therefore, O Arjuna, best among those who practice austerities (tapas), you are known as Tapatya (a descendant of Tapatī).
