वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्मिन्यज्ञे प्रवृत्ते तु वाग्मिनो हेतुवादिनः ।
हेतुवादान्बहून्प्राहुः परस्परजिगीषवः ॥१॥

tasminyajñe pravṛtte tu vāgmino hetuvādinaḥ ,
hetuvādānbahūnprāhuḥ parasparajigīṣavaḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: When that great Vedic ritual (yajña) began, eloquent debaters, eager to overpower each other, put forth many arguments.
ददृशुस्तं नृपतयो यज्ञस्य विधिमुत्तमम् ।
देवेन्द्रस्येव विहितं भीमेन कुरुनन्दन ॥२॥
2. dadṛśustaṁ nṛpatayo yajñasya vidhimuttamam ,
devendrasyeva vihitaṁ bhīmena kurunandana.
2. dadṛśuḥ tam nṛpatayaḥ yajñasya vidhim uttamam
devendrasya iva vihitam bhīmena kurunandana
2. kurunandana nṛpatayaḥ tam uttamam yajñasya vidhim
dadṛśuḥ (saḥ) devendrasya iva bhīmena vihitam (āsīt)
2. O joy of the Kurus, the kings saw that excellent procedure of the Vedic ritual (yajña), which had been arranged by Bhīma as if for the lord of gods (Devendra) himself.
ददृशुस्तोरणान्यत्र शातकुम्भमयानि ते ।
शय्यासनविहारांश्च सुबहून्रत्नभूषितान् ॥३॥
3. dadṛśustoraṇānyatra śātakumbhamayāni te ,
śayyāsanavihārāṁśca subahūnratnabhūṣitān.
3. dadṛśuḥ toraṇāni atra śātakuṇbhamayāni te
śayyā-āsana-vihārān ca subahūn ratnabhūṣitān
3. te atra śātakuṇbhamayāni toraṇāni ca subahūn
ratnabhūṣitān śayyā-āsana-vihārān (ca) dadṛśuḥ
3. There they (the kings) saw arches made of pure gold, and many beds, seats, and pleasure-gardens, all adorned with jewels.
घटान्पात्रीः कटाहानि कलशान्वर्धमानकान् ।
न हि किंचिदसौवर्णमपश्यंस्तत्र पार्थिवाः ॥४॥
4. ghaṭānpātrīḥ kaṭāhāni kalaśānvardhamānakān ,
na hi kiṁcidasauvarṇamapaśyaṁstatra pārthivāḥ.
4. ghaṭān pātrīḥ kaṭāhāni kalaśān vardhamānakān na
hi kiñcit asauvarṇam apaśyan tatra pārthivāḥ
4. pārthivāḥ tatra ghaṭān pātrīḥ kaṭāhāni kalaśān vardhamānakān
(ca) apaśyan na hi kiñcit asauvarṇam (te) apaśyan
4. The kings there saw pots, plates, cauldrons, water-jars, and auspicious vessels; indeed, they saw nothing there that was not made of gold.
यूपांश्च शास्त्रपठितान्दारवान्हेमभूषितान् ।
उपकॢप्तान्यथाकालं विधिवद्भूरिवर्चसः ॥५॥
5. yūpāṁśca śāstrapaṭhitāndāravānhemabhūṣitān ,
upakḷptānyathākālaṁ vidhivadbhūrivarcasaḥ.

upakḷptān yathākālam vidhivat bhūrivarcasaḥ
5. yūpān ca śāstrapaṭhitān dāravān hemabhūṣitān

5. They also saw wooden sacrificial posts (yūpa) that were prescribed by the scriptures, adorned with gold, prepared in due time, according to ritual rules, and shining brightly with great splendor.
स्थलजा जलजा ये च पशवः केचन प्रभो ।
सर्वानेव समानीतांस्तानपश्यन्त ते नृपाः ॥६॥
6. sthalajā jalajā ye ca paśavaḥ kecana prabho ,
sarvāneva samānītāṁstānapaśyanta te nṛpāḥ.
6. sthalajāḥ jalajāḥ ye ca paśavaḥ kecana prabho
sarvān eva samānītān tān apaśyanta te nṛpāḥ
6. prabho te nṛpāḥ sarvān eva tān paśavaḥ ye ca
sthalajāḥ jalajāḥ kecana samānītān apaśyanta
6. And those kings (nṛpa) saw all those animals - whether terrestrial or aquatic, whatever they might be, O lord - which had been gathered together.
गाश्चैव महिषीश्चैव तथा वृद्धाः स्त्रियोऽपि च ।
औदकानि च सत्त्वानि श्वापदानि वयांसि च ॥७॥
7. gāścaiva mahiṣīścaiva tathā vṛddhāḥ striyo'pi ca ,
audakāni ca sattvāni śvāpadāni vayāṁsi ca.
7. gāḥ ca eva mahiṣīḥ ca eva tathā vṛddhāḥ striyaḥ
api ca audakāni ca sattvāni śvāpadāni vayāṃsi ca
7. (te nṛpāḥ apaśyanta) gāḥ ca eva mahiṣīḥ ca eva tathā vṛddhāḥ
striyaḥ api ca audakāni ca sattvāni śvāpadāni vayāṃsi ca
7. And they saw cows, and buffaloes, and also old women, as well as aquatic creatures, predatory animals, and birds.
जरायुजान्यण्डजानि स्वेदजान्युद्भिदानि च ।
पर्वतानूपवन्यानि भूतानि ददृशुश्च ते ॥८॥
8. jarāyujānyaṇḍajāni svedajānyudbhidāni ca ,
parvatānūpavanyāni bhūtāni dadṛśuśca te.
8. jarāyujāni aṇḍajāni svedajāni udbhidāni ca
parvatānūpavanyāni bhūtāni dadṛśuḥ ca te
8. te ca dadṛśuḥ bhūtāni jarāyujāni aṇḍajāni
svedajāni udbhidāni ca parvatānūpavanyāni
8. And they also saw creatures born from a womb (viviparous), from an egg (oviparous), from sweat (svedaja), and from sprouts (udbhida, plants), as well as those belonging to mountains, marshes, and forests.
एवं प्रमुदितं सर्वं पशुगोधनधान्यतः ।
यज्ञवाटं नृपा दृष्ट्वा परं विस्मयमागमन् ।
ब्राह्मणानां विशां चैव बहुमृष्टान्नमृद्धिमत् ॥९॥
9. evaṁ pramuditaṁ sarvaṁ paśugodhanadhānyataḥ ,
yajñavāṭaṁ nṛpā dṛṣṭvā paraṁ vismayamāgaman ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ viśāṁ caiva bahumṛṣṭānnamṛddhimat.
9. evam pramuditam sarvam paśugodhanadhānyataḥ
yajñavāṭam nṛpā dṛṣṭvā
param vismayam āgaman brāhmaṇānām
viśām ca eva bahumṛṣṭānnam ṛddhimat
9. Thus, with all aspects flourishing due to animals, cows, and grain, the kings, upon seeing the Vedic ritual enclosure (yajñavāṭa), were greatly astonished, particularly by the abundant and rich food for the Brahmins and Vaiśyas.
पूर्णे शतसहस्रे तु विप्राणां तत्र भुञ्जताम् ।
दुन्दुभिर्मेघनिर्घोषो मुहुर्मुहुरताड्यत ॥१०॥
10. pūrṇe śatasahasre tu viprāṇāṁ tatra bhuñjatām ,
dundubhirmeghanirghoṣo muhurmuhuratāḍyata.
10. pūrṇe śatasahasre tu viprāṇām tatra bhuñjatām
dundubhiḥ meghanirghoṣaḥ muhuḥ muhuḥ atāḍyata
10. Indeed, while a full hundred thousand Brahmins were eating there, a drum, whose sound was like the rumble of a cloud, was repeatedly beaten.
विननादासकृत्सोऽथ दिवसे दिवसे तदा ।
एवं स ववृते यज्ञो धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥११॥
11. vinanādāsakṛtso'tha divase divase tadā ,
evaṁ sa vavṛte yajño dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ.
11. vinanāda asakṛt saḥ atha divase divase tadā
evam saḥ vavṛte yajñaḥ dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
11. Then, that (drum) repeatedly resounded day after day. Thus, that Vedic ritual (yajña) of the intelligent king of natural law (dharma) proceeded.
अन्नस्य बहवो राजन्नुत्सर्गाः पर्वतोपमाः ।
दधिकुल्याश्च ददृशुः सर्पिषश्च ह्रदाञ्जनाः ॥१२॥
12. annasya bahavo rājannutsargāḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
dadhikulyāśca dadṛśuḥ sarpiṣaśca hradāñjanāḥ.
12. annasya bahavaḥ rājan utsargāḥ parvatopamāḥ
dadhikulyāḥ ca dadṛśuḥ sarpiṣaḥ ca hradāḥ añjanāḥ
12. O King, many mountain-like heaps of food were observed. Also seen were streams of curds and deep, dark-colored lakes of ghee.
जम्बूद्वीपो हि सकलो नानाजनपदायुतः ।
राजन्नदृश्यतैकस्थो राज्ञस्तस्मिन्महाक्रतौ ॥१३॥
13. jambūdvīpo hi sakalo nānājanapadāyutaḥ ,
rājannadṛśyataikastho rājñastasminmahākratau.
13. jambūdvīpaḥ hi sakalaḥ nānājanapadāyutaḥ rājan
adṛśyata ekasthaḥ rājñaḥ tasmin mahākratou
13. O king, the entire Jambudvīpa, endowed with various provinces, was seen by the king as if present in one place during that great Vedic ritual (kratu).
तत्र जातिसहस्राणि पुरुषाणां ततस्ततः ।
गृहीत्वा धनमाजग्मुर्बहूनि भरतर्षभ ॥१४॥
14. tatra jātisahasrāṇi puruṣāṇāṁ tatastataḥ ,
gṛhītvā dhanamājagmurbahūni bharatarṣabha.
14. tatra jātisahasrāṇi puruṣāṇām tatastaḥ
gṛhītvā dhanam ājagmuḥ bahūni bharatarṣabha
14. O best of Bharatas, many thousands of communities (jāti) of people came there from various places, having brought wealth.
राजानः स्रग्विणश्चापि सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः ।
पर्यवेषन्द्विजाग्र्यांस्ताञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥१५॥
15. rājānaḥ sragviṇaścāpi sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ ,
paryaveṣandvijāgryāṁstāñśataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ.
15. rājānaḥ sragviṇaḥ ca api sumṛṣṭamaṇikuṇḍalāḥ
paryaveṣan dvijāgryān tān śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ
15. Kings, adorned with garlands and brightly polished jewel earrings, then served those eminent Brahmins by hundreds and thousands.
विविधान्यन्नपानानि पुरुषा येऽनुयायिनः ।
तेषां नृपोपभोज्यानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददुः स्म ते ॥१६॥
16. vividhānyannapānāni puruṣā ye'nuyāyinaḥ ,
teṣāṁ nṛpopabhojyāni brāhmaṇebhyo daduḥ sma te.
16. vividhāni annapānāni puruṣā ye anuyāyinaḥ
teṣām nṛpopabhojyāni brāhmaṇebhyaḥ daduḥ sma te
16. Those men who were attendants regularly gave various foods and drinks, suitable for kings to enjoy, to those Brahmins.
