युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
समागताः पाण्डवाः सृञ्जयाश्च जनार्दनो युयुधानो विराटः ।
यत्ते वाक्यं धृतराष्ट्रानुशिष्टं गावल्गणे ब्रूहि तत्सूतपुत्र ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
samāgatāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ sṛñjayāśca; janārdano yuyudhāno virāṭaḥ ,
yatte vākyaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrānuśiṣṭaṁ; gāvalgaṇe brūhi tatsūtaputra.
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca samāgatāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ
sṛñjayāḥ ca janārdanaḥ yuyudhānaḥ
virāṭaḥ yat te vākyam dhṛtarāṣṭra
anuśiṣṭam gāvalgaṇe brūhi tat sūtaputra
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: 'The Pāṇḍavas, the Sṛñjayas, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), Yuyudhāna, and Virāṭa have all assembled. O son of Gavalgaṇa, please relate the message that Dhṛtarāṣṭra instructed you with, O son of a charioteer!'
संजय उवाच ।
अजातशत्रुं च वृकोदरं च धनंजयं माद्रवतीसुतौ च ।
आमन्त्रये वासुदेवं च शौरिं युयुधानं चेकितानं विराटम् ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ajātaśatruṁ ca vṛkodaraṁ ca; dhanaṁjayaṁ mādravatīsutau ca ,
āmantraye vāsudevaṁ ca śauriṁ; yuyudhānaṁ cekitānaṁ virāṭam.
2. saṃjaya uvāca ajātaśatrum ca
vṛkodaram ca dhanañjayam mādravatīsutau
ca āmantraye vāsudevam ca
śaurim yuyudhānam cekitānam virāṭam
2. Saṃjaya said: I call upon Ajātaśatru, Vṛkodara, Dhanañjaya, and the two sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva); and Vāsudeva, Śauri, Yuyudhāna, Cekitāna, and Virāṭa.
पाञ्चालानामधिपं चैव वृद्धं धृष्टद्युम्नं पार्षतं याज्ञसेनिम् ।
सर्वे वाचं शृणुतेमां मदीयां वक्ष्यामि यां भूतिमिच्छन्कुरूणाम् ॥३॥
3. pāñcālānāmadhipaṁ caiva vṛddhaṁ; dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ pārṣataṁ yājñasenim ,
sarve vācaṁ śṛṇutemāṁ madīyāṁ; vakṣyāmi yāṁ bhūtimicchankurūṇām.
3. pañcālānām adhipam ca eva vṛddham
dhṛṣṭadyumnam pārṣatam yājñasenim
sarve vācam śṛṇuta imām madīyām
vakṣyāmi yām bhūtim icchann kurūṇām
3. And I also call upon the aged chief of the Pañcālas, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, son of Pṛṣata, and son of Yājñasena (Drupada). All of you, hear this speech of mine, which I will deliver, desiring the prosperity of the Kurus.
शमं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभिनन्दन्नयोजयत्त्वरमाणो रथं मे ।
सभ्रातृपुत्रस्वजनस्य राज्ञस्तद्रोचतां पाण्डवानां शमोऽस्तु ॥४॥
4. śamaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhinanda;nnayojayattvaramāṇo rathaṁ me ,
sabhrātṛputrasvajanasya rājña;stadrocatāṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ śamo'stu.
4. śamam rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhinandan
ayojayat tvaramāṇaḥ ratham me
sabhrātṛputrasvajanasya rājñaḥ
tat rocetām pāṇḍavānām śamaḥ astu
4. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, approving of peace, hurriedly harnessed my chariot. May that peace for the Pāṇḍavas be agreeable to the king, along with his brothers, sons, and kinsmen.
सर्वैर्धर्मैः समुपेताः स्थ पार्थाः प्रस्थानेन मार्दवेनार्जवेन ।
जाताः कुले अनृशंसा वदान्या ह्रीनिषेधाः कर्मणां निश्चयज्ञाः ॥५॥
5. sarvairdharmaiḥ samupetāḥ stha pārthāḥ; prasthānena mārdavenārjavena ,
jātāḥ kule anṛśaṁsā vadānyā; hrīniṣedhāḥ karmaṇāṁ niścayajñāḥ.
5. sarvaiḥ dharmaiḥ samupetāḥ stha
pārthāḥ prasthānena mārdavena ārjavena
jātāḥ kule anṛśaṃsāḥ vadānyāḥ
hrīniṣedhāḥ karmaṇām niścayajñāḥ
5. O Pārthas, you are endowed with all qualities (dharma), through your proper conduct, gentleness, and straightforwardness. You were born in a noble family, are free from cruelty, are generous, restrained by modesty, and are discerning in your actions (karma).
न युज्यते कर्म युष्मासु हीनं सत्त्वं हि वस्तादृशं भीमसेनाः ।
उद्भासते ह्यञ्जनबिन्दुवत्तच्छुक्ले वस्त्रे यद्भवेत्किल्बिषं वः ॥६॥
6. na yujyate karma yuṣmāsu hīnaṁ; sattvaṁ hi vastādṛśaṁ bhīmasenāḥ ,
udbhāsate hyañjanabinduvatta;cchukle vastre yadbhavetkilbiṣaṁ vaḥ.
6. na yujyate karma yuṣmāsu hīnam
sattvam hi vaḥ tādṛśam bhīmasenāḥ
udbhāsate hi añjanabinduvat tat
śukle vastre yat bhavet kilbiṣam vaḥ
6. Bhimasena, a dishonorable action is not fitting for you, for your nature (sattva) is indeed of such a noble kind. Any impurity that might occur to you would shine forth like a spot of lampblack on white cloth.
सर्वक्षयो दृश्यते यत्र कृत्स्नः पापोदयो निरयोऽभावसंस्थः ।
कस्तत्कुर्याज्जातु कर्म प्रजानन्पराजयो यत्र समो जयश्च ॥७॥
7. sarvakṣayo dṛśyate yatra kṛtsnaḥ; pāpodayo nirayo'bhāvasaṁsthaḥ ,
kastatkuryājjātu karma prajāna;nparājayo yatra samo jayaśca.
7. sarvakṣayaḥ dṛśyate yatra kṛtsnaḥ
pāpodayaḥ nirayaḥ abhāvasaṃsthaḥ
kaḥ tat kuryāt jātu karma prajānan
parājayaḥ yatra samaḥ jayaḥ ca
7. Where complete destruction is seen, along with the rise of sin, hell (niraya), and a state of annihilation, who, knowing this, would ever undertake that action (karma) where defeat and victory are considered equal?
ते वै धन्या यैः कृतं ज्ञातिकार्यं ये वः पुत्राः सुहृदो बान्धवाश्च ।
उपक्रुष्टं जीवितं संत्यजेयुस्ततः कुरूणां नियतो वै भवः स्यात् ॥८॥
8. te vai dhanyā yaiḥ kṛtaṁ jñātikāryaṁ; ye vaḥ putrāḥ suhṛdo bāndhavāśca ,
upakruṣṭaṁ jīvitaṁ saṁtyajeyu;stataḥ kurūṇāṁ niyato vai bhavaḥ syāt.
8. te vai dhanyā yaiḥ kṛtam jñātikāryam
ye vaḥ putrāḥ suhṛdaḥ bāndhavāḥ ca
upakruṣṭam jīvitam saṃtyajeyuḥ
tataḥ kurūṇām niyataḥ vai bhavaḥ syāt
8. Indeed, fortunate are those by whom the duty to their kinsmen has been done – your sons, friends, and relatives who would abandon a disgraced life. Then, the continued existence (bhava) of the Kurus would certainly be assured.
ते चेत्कुरूननुशास्य स्थ पार्था निनीय सर्वान्द्विषतो निगृह्य ।
समं वस्तज्जीवितं मृत्युना स्याद्यज्जीवध्वं ज्ञातिवधे न साधु ॥९॥
9. te cetkurūnanuśāsya stha pārthā; ninīya sarvāndviṣato nigṛhya ,
samaṁ vastajjīvitaṁ mṛtyunā syā;dyajjīvadhvaṁ jñātivadhe na sādhu.
9. te cet kurūn anuśāsya stha pārthāḥ
ninīya sarvān dviṣataḥ nigṛhya
samam vaḥ tat jīvitam mṛtyunā syāt
yat jīvadhvam jñātivadhe na sādhu
9. O Pārthas, if you remain after governing the Kurus, having brought low and subdued all your enemies, that life of yours would be equal to death, for living by kinsmen-slaughter is not good.
को ह्येव युष्मान्सह केशवेन सचेकितानान्पार्षतबाहुगुप्तान् ।
ससात्यकीन्विषहेत प्रजेतुं लब्ध्वापि देवान्सचिवान्सहेन्द्रान् ॥१०॥
10. ko hyeva yuṣmānsaha keśavena; sacekitānānpārṣatabāhuguptān ,
sasātyakīnviṣaheta prajetuṁ; labdhvāpi devānsacivānsahendrān.
10. kaḥ hi eva yuṣmān saha keśavena
sacekitānān pārṣatabāhuguptān
sasātyakīn viṣaheta prajetum labdhvā
api devān sacivān saha indrān
10. Indeed, who could possibly overcome you, who are vigilant, protected by the arms of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, and accompanied by Keśava and Sātyaki, even if one were to obtain the gods, including Indra, as allies?
को वा कुरून्द्रोणभीष्माभिगुप्तानश्वत्थाम्ना शल्यकृपादिभिश्च ।
रणे प्रसोढुं विषहेत राजन्राधेयगुप्तान्सह भूमिपालैः ॥११॥
11. ko vā kurūndroṇabhīṣmābhiguptā;naśvatthāmnā śalyakṛpādibhiśca ,
raṇe prasoḍhuṁ viṣaheta rāja;nrādheyaguptānsaha bhūmipālaiḥ.
11. kaḥ vā kurūn droṇabhīṣmābhiguptān
aśvatthāmnā śalyakṛpādibhiḥ
ca raṇe prasoḍhum viṣaheta rājan
rādheyaguptān saha bhūmipālaiḥ
11. O King, who indeed could possibly withstand in battle the Kurus, who are well-guarded by Droṇa and Bhīṣma, and by Aśvatthāman, Śalya, Kṛpa, and others, and who are also protected by Rādhā's son (Karṇa) and other rulers?
महद्बलं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञः को वै शक्तो हन्तुमक्षीयमाणः ।
सोऽहं जये चैव पराजये च निःश्रेयसं नाधिगच्छामि किंचित् ॥१२॥
12. mahadbalaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ; ko vai śakto hantumakṣīyamāṇaḥ ,
so'haṁ jaye caiva parājaye ca; niḥśreyasaṁ nādhigacchāmi kiṁcit.
12. mahat balam dhārtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ
kaḥ vai śaktaḥ hantum akṣīyamāṇaḥ
saḥ aham jaye ca eva parājaye ca
niḥśreyasam na adhigacchāmi kiṃcit
12. Indeed, who is capable of destroying this mighty army of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) without being diminished oneself? Therefore, I find no supreme welfare (niḥśreyasa) whatsoever, whether in victory or in defeat.
कथं हि नीचा इव दौष्कुलेया निर्धर्मार्थं कर्म कुर्युश्च पार्थाः ।
सोऽहं प्रसाद्य प्रणतो वासुदेवं पाञ्चालानामधिपं चैव वृद्धम् ॥१३॥
13. kathaṁ hi nīcā iva dauṣkuleyā; nirdharmārthaṁ karma kuryuśca pārthāḥ ,
so'haṁ prasādya praṇato vāsudevaṁ; pāñcālānāmadhipaṁ caiva vṛddham.
13. katham hi nīcāḥ iva dauṣkuleyāḥ
nirdharmārtham karma kuryuḥ ca pārthāḥ
saḥ aham prasādya praṇataḥ vāsudevam
pāñcālānām adhipam ca eva vṛddham
13. Indeed, how could the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas) perform actions (karma) like ignoble, ill-born individuals, without regard for natural law (dharma) or material purpose (artha)? Therefore, I, having propitiated and respectfully bowed to Vāsudeva (Krishna), and also to the aged lord of the Pāñcālas (Drupada)...
कृताञ्जलिः शरणं वः प्रपद्ये कथं स्वस्ति स्यात्कुरुसृञ्जयानाम् ।
न ह्येव ते वचनं वासुदेवो धनंजयो वा जातु किंचिन्न कुर्यात् ॥१४॥
14. kṛtāñjaliḥ śaraṇaṁ vaḥ prapadye; kathaṁ svasti syātkurusṛñjayānām ,
na hyeva te vacanaṁ vāsudevo; dhanaṁjayo vā jātu kiṁcinna kuryāt.
14. kṛtāñjaliḥ śaraṇam vaḥ prapadye
katham svasti syāt kurusṛñjayānām
na hi eva te vacanam vāsudevaḥ
dhanañjayaḥ vā jātu kiñcit na kuryāt
14. With folded hands, I seek refuge in you. How can there be peace for the Kurus and Sṛñjayas? Indeed, neither Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) nor Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) would ever fail to execute your word.
प्राणानादौ याच्यमानः कुतोऽन्यदेतद्विद्वन्साधनार्थं ब्रवीमि ।
एतद्राज्ञो भीष्मपुरोगमस्य मतं यद्वः शान्तिरिहोत्तमा स्यात् ॥१५॥
15. prāṇānādau yācyamānaḥ kuto'nya;detadvidvansādhanārthaṁ bravīmi ,
etadrājño bhīṣmapurogamasya; mataṁ yadvaḥ śāntirihottamā syāt.
15. prāṇān ādau yācyamānaḥ kutaḥ anyat
etat vidvan sādhanārtham bravīmi
etat rājñaḥ bhīṣmapurogamasya
matam yat vaḥ śāntiḥ iha uttamā syāt
15. O learned one, when lives are being begged for at the outset, why should I speak of anything else? I am saying this for the sake of a solution. This is the opinion of the king, with Bhīṣma as his foremost guide, that supreme peace should be yours here.
