और्व उवाच ।
उक्तवानस्मि यां क्रोधात्प्रतिज्ञां पितरस्तदा ।
सर्वलोकविनाशाय न सा मे वितथा भवेत् ॥१॥
1. aurva uvāca ,
uktavānasmi yāṁ krodhātpratijñāṁ pitarastadā ,
sarvalokavināśāya na sā me vitathā bhavet.

pitaraḥ tadā sarvalokavināśāya na sā me vitathā bhavet
1. Aurva said: "The vow (pratijñā) that I made then to my ancestors out of anger (krodha) for the destruction of all worlds - that vow of mine cannot be in vain."
वृथारोषप्रतिज्ञो हि नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ।
अनिस्तीर्णो हि मां रोषो दहेदग्निरिवारणिम् ॥२॥
2. vṛthāroṣapratijño hi nāhaṁ jīvitumutsahe ,
anistīrṇo hi māṁ roṣo dahedagnirivāraṇim.
2. vṛthā-roṣa-pratijñaḥ hi na aham jīvitum utsahe
aniṣṭīrṇaḥ hi mām roṣaḥ dahet agniḥ iva araṇim
2. Indeed, I would not wish to live if my vow (pratijñā), made from anger (krodha) in vain, were to become fruitless. For unfulfilled anger (roṣa) would surely consume me, just as fire consumes the kindling stick (araṇi).
यो हि कारणतः क्रोधं संजातं क्षन्तुमर्हति ।
नालं स मनुजः सम्यक्त्रिवर्गं परिरक्षितुम् ॥३॥
3. yo hi kāraṇataḥ krodhaṁ saṁjātaṁ kṣantumarhati ,
nālaṁ sa manujaḥ samyaktrivargaṁ parirakṣitum.
3. yaḥ hi kāraṇataḥ krodham sañjātam kṣantum arhati
na alam sa manuṣaḥ samyak trivargam parirakṣitum
3. Indeed, the man who is able to forgive anger (krodha) that has arisen, even with a valid reason, is not truly capable of properly protecting the three goals of human life (trivarga).
अशिष्टानां नियन्ता हि शिष्टानां परिरक्षता ।
स्थाने रोषः प्रयुक्तः स्यान्नृपैः स्वर्गजिगीषुभिः ॥४॥
4. aśiṣṭānāṁ niyantā hi śiṣṭānāṁ parirakṣatā ,
sthāne roṣaḥ prayuktaḥ syānnṛpaiḥ svargajigīṣubhiḥ.
4. aśiṣṭānām niyantā hi śiṣṭānām parirakṣitā sthāne
roṣaḥ prayuktaḥ syāt nṛpaiḥ svargajigīṣubhiḥ
4. Indeed, anger (roṣa) is appropriately employed by kings (nṛpa) who desire to conquer heaven (svarga), as it serves to control the unruly and protect the virtuous (śiṣṭa).
अश्रौषमहमूरुस्थो गर्भशय्यागतस्तदा ।
आरावं मातृवर्गस्य भृगूणां क्षत्रियैर्वधे ॥५॥
5. aśrauṣamahamūrustho garbhaśayyāgatastadā ,
ārāvaṁ mātṛvargasya bhṛgūṇāṁ kṣatriyairvadhe.
5. aśrauṣam aham ūrusthaḥ garbhaśayyāgataḥ tadā
ārāvam mātṛvargasya bhṛgūṇām kṣatriyaiḥ vadhe
5. Indeed, while I was still in the womb (garbhaśayyāgata), situated on my mother's lap (ūrustha), I then heard the cries of my maternal relatives (mātṛvarga) due to the slaughter (vadha) of the Bhṛgus by the Kṣatriyas.
सामरैर्हि यदा लोकैर्भृगूणां क्षत्रियाधमैः ।
आगर्भोत्सादनं क्षान्तं तदा मां मन्युराविषत् ॥६॥
6. sāmarairhi yadā lokairbhṛgūṇāṁ kṣatriyādhamaiḥ ,
āgarbhotsādanaṁ kṣāntaṁ tadā māṁ manyurāviṣat.
6. sāmaraiḥ hi yadā lokaiḥ bhṛgūṇām kṣatriyādhamaiḥ
āgarbhotsādanam kṣāntam tadā mām manyuḥ āviṣat
6. Indeed, when the people, along with the gods, and even the lowest of kṣatriyas, tolerated the complete destruction of the Bhrigus, even to the point of aborting fetuses, then wrath (manyu) entered me.
आपूर्णकोशाः किल मे मातरः पितरस्तथा ।
भयात्सर्वेषु लोकेषु नाधिजग्मुः परायणम् ॥७॥
7. āpūrṇakośāḥ kila me mātaraḥ pitarastathā ,
bhayātsarveṣu lokeṣu nādhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam.
7. āpūrṇakośāḥ kila me mātaraḥ pitaraḥ tathā
bhayāt sarveṣu lokeṣu na adhijagmuḥ parāyaṇam
7. Indeed, my mothers and fathers, though very wealthy (āpūrṇakośāḥ), could not find refuge (parāyaṇam) in any of the worlds due to fear.
तान्भृगूणां तदा दारान्कश्चिन्नाभ्यवपद्यत ।
यदा तदा दधारेयमूरुणैकेन मां शुभा ॥८॥
8. tānbhṛgūṇāṁ tadā dārānkaścinnābhyavapadyata ,
yadā tadā dadhāreyamūruṇaikena māṁ śubhā.
8. tān bhṛgūṇām tadā dārān kaścit na abhyavapadyata
yadā tadā dadhāra iyam ūruṇā ekena mām śubhā
8. When no one came forward to protect those Bhrigu wives at that time, then this auspicious mother (śubhā) bore me concealed in her thigh.
प्रतिषेद्धा हि पापस्य यदा लोकेषु विद्यते ।
तदा सर्वेषु लोकेषु पापकृन्नोपपद्यते ॥९॥
9. pratiṣeddhā hi pāpasya yadā lokeṣu vidyate ,
tadā sarveṣu lokeṣu pāpakṛnnopapadyate.
9. pratiṣeddhā hi pāpasya yadā lokeṣu vidyate
tadā sarveṣu lokeṣu pāpakṛt na upapadyate
9. Indeed, when a prohibitor of evil (pāpasya) exists among people, then evil-doers (pāpakṛt) do not thrive in any of the worlds.
यदा तु प्रतिषेद्धारं पापो न लभते क्वचित् ।
तिष्ठन्ति बहवो लोके तदा पापेषु कर्मसु ॥१०॥
10. yadā tu pratiṣeddhāraṁ pāpo na labhate kvacit ,
tiṣṭhanti bahavo loke tadā pāpeṣu karmasu.
10. yadā tu pratiṣeddhāram pāpaḥ na labhate kvacit
tiṣṭhanti bahavaḥ loke tadā pāpeṣu karmasu
10. But when a wicked person (pāpaḥ) finds no one to prevent him anywhere, then many in the world persist in their evil actions (karma).
जानन्नपि च यः पापं शक्तिमान्न नियच्छति ।
ईशः सन्सोऽपि तेनैव कर्मणा संप्रयुज्यते ॥११॥
11. jānannapi ca yaḥ pāpaṁ śaktimānna niyacchati ,
īśaḥ sanso'pi tenaiva karmaṇā saṁprayujyate.
11. jānan api ca yaḥ pāpam śaktimān na niyacchati
īśaḥ san saḥ api tena eva karmaṇā saṃprayujyate
11. And a powerful person who, despite knowing evil, does not restrain it, even if he is a master, becomes implicated by that very action (karma).
राजभिश्चेश्वरैश्चैव यदि वै पितरो मम ।
शक्तैर्न शकिता त्रातुमिष्टं मत्वेह जीवितम् ॥१२॥
12. rājabhiśceśvaraiścaiva yadi vai pitaro mama ,
śaktairna śakitā trātumiṣṭaṁ matveha jīvitam.
12. rājabhiḥ ca īśvaraiḥ ca eva yadi vai pitaraḥ mama
śaktaiḥ na śakitā trātum iṣṭam matvā iha jīvitam
12. If indeed my ancestors, who were kings and powerful lords, were unable to protect my (Śakuntalā's) cherished life here, despite considering (such) life desirable...
अत एषामहं क्रुद्धो लोकानामीश्वरोऽद्य सन् ।
भवतां तु वचो नाहमलं समतिवर्तितुम् ॥१३॥
13. ata eṣāmahaṁ kruddho lokānāmīśvaro'dya san ,
bhavatāṁ tu vaco nāhamalaṁ samativartitum.
13. ataḥ eṣām aham kruddhaḥ lokānām īśvaraḥ adya san
bhavatām tu vacaḥ na aham alam samativartitum
13. Therefore, I am angry with these people (of the worlds), even though I am their lord today. But I am certainly unable to transgress your words.
मम चापि भवेदेतदीश्वरस्य सतो महत् ।
उपेक्षमाणस्य पुनर्लोकानां किल्बिषाद्भयम् ॥१४॥
14. mama cāpi bhavedetadīśvarasya sato mahat ,
upekṣamāṇasya punarlokānāṁ kilbiṣādbhayam.
14. mama ca api bhavet etat īśvarasya sataḥ mahat
upekṣamāṇasya punaḥ lokānām kilbiṣāt bhayam
14. And for me, even though I am a great lord, this danger might arise: if I neglect the people, fear from their transgressions (sins) would certainly come upon me.
यश्चायं मन्युजो मेऽग्निर्लोकानादातुमिच्छति ।
दहेदेष च मामेव निगृहीतः स्वतेजसा ॥१५॥
15. yaścāyaṁ manyujo me'gnirlokānādātumicchati ,
dahedeṣa ca māmeva nigṛhītaḥ svatejasā.
15. yaḥ ca ayam manyujaḥ me agniḥ lokān ādātum
icchati dahet eṣaḥ ca mām eva nigṛhītaḥ svatejasā
15. And this fire of mine, born of wrath, wishes to consume the people; but if restrained by its own power, it would surely consume me myself.
भवतां च विजानामि सर्वलोकहितेप्सुताम् ।
तस्माद्विदध्वं यच्छ्रेयो लोकानां मम चेश्वराः ॥१६॥
16. bhavatāṁ ca vijānāmi sarvalokahitepsutām ,
tasmādvidadhvaṁ yacchreyo lokānāṁ mama ceśvarāḥ.
16. bhavatām ca vijānāmi sarvalokahitepsutām tasmāt
vidadhvaṃ yat śreyaḥ lokānām mama ca īśvarāḥ
16. O lords, I understand your desire for the welfare of all beings. Therefore, please do what is best for the worlds and for me.
पितर ऊचुः ।
य एष मन्युजस्तेऽग्निर्लोकानादातुमिच्छति ।
अप्सु तं मुञ्च भद्रं ते लोका ह्यप्सु प्रतिष्ठिताः ॥१७॥
17. pitara ūcuḥ ,
ya eṣa manyujaste'gnirlokānādātumicchati ,
apsu taṁ muñca bhadraṁ te lokā hyapsu pratiṣṭhitāḥ.
17. pitaraḥ ūcuḥ yaḥ eṣaḥ manyujaḥ te agniḥ lokān ādātum
icchati apsu tam muñca bhadram te lokāḥ hi apsu pratiṣṭhitāḥ
17. The ancestors said: 'This fire of yours, born of anger (manyu), wishes to consume the worlds. Release it into the waters; may prosperity be yours. For indeed, all beings are established in the waters.'
आपोमयाः सर्वरसाः सर्वमापोमयं जगत् ।
तस्मादप्सु विमुञ्चेमं क्रोधाग्निं द्विजसत्तम ॥१८॥
18. āpomayāḥ sarvarasāḥ sarvamāpomayaṁ jagat ,
tasmādapsu vimuñcemaṁ krodhāgniṁ dvijasattama.
18. āpomayāḥ sarvarasāḥ sarvam āpomayam jagat tasmāt
apsu vimuñca imam krodhāgnim dvijasattama
18. All essences are water-borne, and the entire world is composed of water. Therefore, O best among twice-born (dvija) ones, release this fire of anger into the waters.
अयं तिष्ठतु ते विप्र यदीच्छसि महोदधौ ।
मन्युजोऽग्निर्दहन्नापो लोका ह्यापोमयाः स्मृताः ॥१९॥
19. ayaṁ tiṣṭhatu te vipra yadīcchasi mahodadhau ,
manyujo'gnirdahannāpo lokā hyāpomayāḥ smṛtāḥ.
19. ayam tiṣṭhatu te vipra yadi icchasi mahodadhau
manyujaḥ agniḥ dahan āpaḥ lokāḥ hi āpomayāḥ smṛtāḥ
19. O brahmin (vipra), if you wish, let this fire of yours, born of anger (manyu), remain in the great ocean, even while burning the waters. For indeed, the worlds are remembered to be composed of water.
एवं प्रतिज्ञा सत्येयं तवानघ भविष्यति ।
न चैव सामरा लोका गमिष्यन्ति पराभवम् ॥२०॥
20. evaṁ pratijñā satyeyaṁ tavānagha bhaviṣyati ,
na caiva sāmarā lokā gamiṣyanti parābhavam.
20. evam pratijñā satyā iyam tava anagha bhaviṣyati
na ca eva sāmarāḥ lokāḥ gamiṣyanti parābhavam
20. Thus, O sinless one, this vow of yours will come true. And indeed, the worlds, together with the immortals, will not suffer defeat.
वसिष्ठ उवाच ।
ततस्तं क्रोधजं तात और्वोऽग्निं वरुणालये ।
उत्ससर्ज स चैवाप उपयुङ्क्ते महोदधौ ॥२१॥
21. vasiṣṭha uvāca ,
tatastaṁ krodhajaṁ tāta aurvo'gniṁ varuṇālaye ,
utsasarja sa caivāpa upayuṅkte mahodadhau.
21. vasiṣṭha uvāca tatas tam krodhajam tāta aurvaḥ agnim
varuṇālaye utsasarja sa ca eva āpaḥ upayuṅkte mahodadhau
21. Vasiṣṭha said: "Then, O dear one, Aurva released that fire (agni), born of his anger, into Varuṇa's abode. And that fire (agni) indeed consumes the waters in the great ocean."
महद्धयशिरो भूत्वा यत्तद्वेदविदो विदुः ।
तमग्निमुद्गिरन्वक्त्रात्पिबत्यापो महोदधौ ॥२२॥
22. mahaddhayaśiro bhūtvā yattadvedavido viduḥ ,
tamagnimudgiranvaktrātpibatyāpo mahodadhau.
22. mahat hayaśiraḥ bhūtvā yat tat vedavidaḥ viduḥ
tam agnim udgiran vaktrāt pibati āpaḥ mahodadhau
22. Having become a great horse's head, which the knowers of the Vedas know it to be, that fire (agni), continuously vomiting from its mouth, drinks the waters in the great ocean.
तस्मात्त्वमपि भद्रं ते न लोकान्हन्तुमर्हसि ।
पराशर परान्धर्माञ्जानञ्ज्ञानवतां वर ॥२३॥
23. tasmāttvamapi bhadraṁ te na lokānhantumarhasi ,
parāśara parāndharmāñjānañjñānavatāṁ vara.
23. tasmāt tvam api bhadram te na lokān hantum arhasi
parāśara parān dharmān jānan jñānavatām vara
23. Therefore, may good fortune be yours! You too, Parāśara, should not destroy the worlds, knowing the higher principles of natural law (dharma), O best among the wise.
