शृणु राजन्नवहितो यथा वृत्तो महान्क्षयः ।
कुरूणां पाण्डवानां च समासाद्य परस्परम् ॥१॥

विद्रुतेषु च सैन्येषु समानीतेषु चासकृत् ॥२॥
2. nihate sūtaputre tu pāṇḍavena mahātmanā ,
vidruteṣu ca sainyeṣu samānīteṣu cāsakṛt.

2. However, after the son of Suta (Karṇa) was slain by the great-souled Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), and even as the armies were repeatedly scattered and then rallied...
विमुखे तव पुत्रे तु शोकोपहतचेतसि ।
भृशोद्विग्नेषु सैन्येषु दृष्ट्वा पार्थस्य विक्रमम् ॥३॥
3. vimukhe tava putre tu śokopahatacetasi ,
bhṛśodvigneṣu sainyeṣu dṛṣṭvā pārthasya vikramam.

3. Moreover, with your son (Duryodhana) having turned away and his mind afflicted by sorrow, and the armies greatly disturbed after witnessing Partha's (Arjuna's) valor...
ध्यायमानेषु सैन्येषु दुःखं प्राप्तेषु भारत ।
बलानां मथ्यमानानां श्रुत्वा निनदमुत्तमम् ॥४॥
4. dhyāyamāneṣu sainyeṣu duḥkhaṁ prāpteṣu bhārata ,
balānāṁ mathyamānānāṁ śrutvā ninadamuttamam.

4. O Bhārata, while the armies, having fallen into distress, were being intently observed, and upon hearing the excellent roar of the forces being crushed...
अभिज्ञानं नरेन्द्राणां विकृतं प्रेक्ष्य संयुगे ।
पतितान्रथनीडांश्च रथांश्चापि महात्मनाम् ॥५॥
5. abhijñānaṁ narendrāṇāṁ vikṛtaṁ prekṣya saṁyuge ,
patitānrathanīḍāṁśca rathāṁścāpi mahātmanām.

5. Having observed the disfigured insignia of the kings in battle, and the fallen chariot-seats and also the chariots of the mighty ones...
रणे विनिहतान्नागान्दृष्ट्वा पत्तींश्च मारिष ।
आयोधनं चातिघोरं रुद्रस्याक्रीडसंनिभम् ॥६॥
6. raṇe vinihatānnāgāndṛṣṭvā pattīṁśca māriṣa ,
āyodhanaṁ cātighoraṁ rudrasyākrīḍasaṁnibham.

āyodhanam ca atighoram rudrasya ākrīḍasannibham

6. And having seen the elephants and foot soldiers slain in battle, O respected one, and the exceedingly dreadful battlefield resembling Rudra's playground (ākrīḍa)...
अप्रख्यातिं गतानां तु राज्ञां शतसहस्रशः ।
कृपाविष्टः कृपो राजन्वयःशीलसमन्वितः ॥७॥
7. aprakhyātiṁ gatānāṁ tu rājñāṁ śatasahasraśaḥ ,
kṛpāviṣṭaḥ kṛpo rājanvayaḥśīlasamanvitaḥ.
7. aprakhyātim gatānām tu rājñām śatasahasraśaḥ
kṛpaḥ rājan vayaḥśīlasamanvitaḥ
7. rājan śatasahasraśaḥ aprakhyātim gatānām rājñām
tu kṛpāviṣṭaḥ vayaḥśīlasamanvitaḥ kṛpaḥ [asti]
7. But when thousands upon thousands of kings had attained obscurity, Kṛpa, filled with compassion, O King, and endowed with age and good character (śīla)...
अब्रवीत्तत्र तेजस्वी सोऽभिसृत्य जनाधिपम् ।
दुर्योधनं मन्युवशाद्वचनं वचनक्षमः ॥८॥
8. abravīttatra tejasvī so'bhisṛtya janādhipam ,
duryodhanaṁ manyuvaśādvacanaṁ vacanakṣamaḥ.
8. abravīt tatra tejasvī saḥ abhisṛtya janādhipam
duryodhanam manyuvaśāt vacanam vacanakṣamaḥ
8. saḥ tejasvī vacanakṣamaḥ tatra janādhipam
duryodhanam abhisṛtya manyuvaśāt vacanam abravīt
8. The brilliant one, eloquent in speech, approached King Duryodhana there and, overcome by anger, spoke these words.
दुर्योधन निबोधेदं यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि कौरव ।
श्रुत्वा कुरु महाराज यदि ते रोचतेऽनघ ॥९॥
9. duryodhana nibodhedaṁ yattvā vakṣyāmi kaurava ,
śrutvā kuru mahārāja yadi te rocate'nagha.
9. duryodhana nibodha idam yat tvā vakṣyāmi kaurava
śrutvā kuru mahārāja yadi te rocate anagha
9. duryodhana kaurava mahārāja anagha nibodha idam
yat tvā vakṣyāmi śrutvā yadi te rocate kuru
9. O Duryodhana, O Kaurava, listen to this which I will tell you. O great king, blameless one, having heard it, act accordingly if it pleases you.
न युद्धधर्माच्छ्रेयान्वै पन्था राजेन्द्र विद्यते ।
यं समाश्रित्य युध्यन्ते क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥१०॥
10. na yuddhadharmācchreyānvai panthā rājendra vidyate ,
yaṁ samāśritya yudhyante kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha.
10. na yuddhadharmāt śreyān vai panthā rājendra vidyate
yam samāśritya yudhyante kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha
10. rājendra kṣatriyarṣabha vai na yuddhadharmāt śreyān
panthā vidyate yam samāśritya kṣatriyāḥ yudhyante
10. O chief of kings, O best of warriors, indeed, there is no path superior to the intrinsic nature (dharma) of battle, by resorting to which kṣatriyas fight.
पुत्रो भ्राता पिता चैव स्वस्रेयो मातुलस्तथा ।
संबन्धिबान्धवाश्चैव योध्या वै क्षत्रजीविना ॥११॥
11. putro bhrātā pitā caiva svasreyo mātulastathā ,
saṁbandhibāndhavāścaiva yodhyā vai kṣatrajīvinā.
11. putraḥ bhrātā pitā ca eva svasreyaḥ mātulaḥ tathā
sambandhibāndhavāḥ ca eva yodhyā vai kṣatrajīvinā
11. putraḥ bhrātā pitā ca eva svasreyaḥ mātulaḥ tathā
ca eva sambandhibāndhavāḥ vai kṣatrajīvinā yodhyā
11. Son, brother, father, and also nephew, and maternal uncle, as well as other relatives and kinsmen—all these are indeed to be fought by a kṣatriya, one who lives by the warrior's code.
वधे चैव परो धर्मस्तथाधर्मः पलायने ।
ते स्म घोरां समापन्ना जीविकां जीवितार्थिनः ॥१२॥
12. vadhe caiva paro dharmastathādharmaḥ palāyane ,
te sma ghorāṁ samāpannā jīvikāṁ jīvitārthinaḥ.
12. vadhe ca eva paraḥ dharmaḥ tathā adharmaḥ palāyane
te sma ghorām samāpannāḥ jīvikām jīvitārthinaḥ
12. vadhe ca eva paraḥ dharmaḥ tathā palāyane adharmaḥ
te jīvitārthinaḥ ghorām jīvikām samāpannāḥ sma
12. Indeed, killing is the supreme natural law (dharma), while fleeing is unrighteousness (adharma). They, desiring to live, have resorted to a dreadful livelihood.
तत्र त्वां प्रतिवक्ष्यामि किंचिदेव हितं वचः ।
हते भीष्मे च द्रोणे च कर्णे चैव महारथे ॥१३॥
13. tatra tvāṁ prativakṣyāmi kiṁcideva hitaṁ vacaḥ ,
hate bhīṣme ca droṇe ca karṇe caiva mahārathe.
13. tatra tvām prativakṣyāmi kiñcit eva hitam vacaḥ
hate bhīṣme ca droṇe ca karṇe ca eva mahārathe
13. tatra tvām kiñcit eva hitam vacaḥ prativakṣyāmi
bhīṣme ca droṇe ca mahārathe karṇe ca eva hate
13. Therefore, I shall speak to you some beneficial words. [This is] when Bhishma, Drona, and indeed the great warrior Karna have all been killed.
जयद्रथे च निहते तव भ्रातृषु चानघ ।
लक्ष्मणे तव पुत्रे च किं शेषं पर्युपास्महे ॥१४॥
14. jayadrathe ca nihate tava bhrātṛṣu cānagha ,
lakṣmaṇe tava putre ca kiṁ śeṣaṁ paryupāsmahe.
14. jayadrathe ca nihate tava bhrātṛṣu ca anagha
lakṣmaṇe tava putre ca kim śeṣam paryupāsmahe
14. anagha jayadrathe ca nihate tava bhrātṛṣu ca
tava putre lakṣmaṇe ca kim śeṣam paryupāsmahe
14. And, O sinless one, when Jayadratha is killed, and (when) your brothers (are killed), and your son Lakshmana (is killed), what remains for us to wait for?
येषु भारं समासज्य राज्ये मतिमकुर्महि ।
ते संत्यज्य तनूर्याताः शूरा ब्रह्मविदां गतिम् ॥१५॥
15. yeṣu bhāraṁ samāsajya rājye matimakurmahi ,
te saṁtyajya tanūryātāḥ śūrā brahmavidāṁ gatim.
15. yeṣu bhāram samāsajya rājye matim akurmahi te
saṃtyajya tanūḥ yātāḥ śūrāḥ brahmavidām gatim
15. yeṣu rājye bhāram samāsajya matim akurmahi te
śūrāḥ tanūḥ saṃtyajya brahmavidām gatim yātāḥ
15. Those heroes, on whom we had placed the responsibility for the kingdom and formed our plans for sovereignty, have abandoned their bodies and attained the state (gati) of those who know (brahman).
वयं त्विह विनाभूता गुणवद्भिर्महारथैः ।
कृपणं वर्तयिष्याम पातयित्वा नृपान्बहून् ॥१६॥
16. vayaṁ tviha vinābhūtā guṇavadbhirmahārathaiḥ ,
kṛpaṇaṁ vartayiṣyāma pātayitvā nṛpānbahūn.
16. vayam tu iha vinābhūtāḥ guṇavadbhiḥ mahārathaiḥ
kṛpaṇam vartayiṣyāmaḥ pātayitvā nṛpān bahūn
16. vayam iha guṇavadbhiḥ mahārathaiḥ vinābhūtāḥ,
bahūn nṛpān pātayitvā tu kṛpaṇam vartayiṣyāmaḥ.
16. Indeed, we, separated here from virtuous great charioteers (mahāratha), will lead a miserable existence after striking down many kings.
सर्वैरपि च जीवद्भिर्बीभत्सुरपराजितः ।
कृष्णनेत्रो महाबाहुर्देवैरपि दुरासदः ॥१७॥
17. sarvairapi ca jīvadbhirbībhatsuraparājitaḥ ,
kṛṣṇanetro mahābāhurdevairapi durāsadaḥ.
17. sarvaiḥ api ca jīvadbhiḥ bhībhatsuḥ aparājitaḥ
kṛṣṇanetraḥ mahābāhuḥ devaiḥ api durāsadaḥ
17. ca sarvaiḥ jīvadbhiḥ api,
bhībhatsuḥ aparājitaḥ kṛṣṇanetraḥ mahābāhuḥ devaiḥ api durāsadaḥ.
17. And by all living beings, he is Bhībhatsu, the unconquered, whose guide is Krishna (kṛṣṇa-netra), the mighty-armed, unassailable even by the gods.
इन्द्रकार्मुकवज्राभमिन्द्रकेतुमिवोच्छ्रितम् ।
वानरं केतुमासाद्य संचचाल महाचमूः ॥१८॥
18. indrakārmukavajrābhamindraketumivocchritam ,
vānaraṁ ketumāsādya saṁcacāla mahācamūḥ.
18. indrakārmukavajrābham indraketum iva ucchritam
vānaram ketum āsādya saṃcacāla mahācamūḥ
18. mahācamūḥ,
indrakārmukavajrābham indraketum iva ucchritam vānaram ketum āsādya,
saṃcacāla.
18. The great army (mahācamū) marched forth, having obtained the monkey banner, which was raised high like Indra's standard and resembled Indra's bow and thunderbolt.
सिंहनादेन भीमस्य पाञ्चजन्यस्वनेन च ।
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषात्संहृष्यन्ति मनांसि नः ॥१९॥
19. siṁhanādena bhīmasya pāñcajanyasvanena ca ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣātsaṁhṛṣyanti manāṁsi naḥ.
19. siṃhanādena bhīmasya pāñcajanyasvanena ca
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣāt saṃhṛṣyanti manāṃsi naḥ
19. bhīmasya siṃhanādena ca pāñcajanyasvanena ca gāṇḍīvasya nirghoṣāt naḥ manāṃsi saṃhṛṣyanti.
19. Our hearts are thrilled by Bhīma's lion-like roar, by the sound of the Pāñcajanya (Krishna's conch), and by the twang of the Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow).
चरन्तीव महाविद्युन्मुष्णन्ती नयनप्रभाम् ।
अलातमिव चाविद्धं गाण्डीवं समदृश्यत ॥२०॥
20. carantīva mahāvidyunmuṣṇantī nayanaprabhām ,
alātamiva cāviddhaṁ gāṇḍīvaṁ samadṛśyata.
20. carantī iva mahāvidyut muṣṇantī nayanaprabhām
alātam iva ca āviddham gāṇḍīvam samadṛśyata
20. gāṇḍīvam mahāvidyut iva carantī nayanaprabhām
muṣṇantī ca alātam iva āviddham samadṛśyata
20. The Gaṇḍīva bow was seen moving like a great flash of lightning, stealing the light from the eyes, and whirling like a firebrand.
जाम्बूनदविचित्रं च धूयमानं महद्धनुः ।
दृश्यते दिक्षु सर्वासु विद्युदभ्रघनेष्विव ॥२१॥
21. jāmbūnadavicitraṁ ca dhūyamānaṁ mahaddhanuḥ ,
dṛśyate dikṣu sarvāsu vidyudabhraghaneṣviva.
21. jāmbūnadavicitram ca dhūyamānam mahat dhanuḥ
dṛśyate dikṣu sarvāsu vidyut abhraghaneṣu iva
21. jāmbūnadavicitram ca mahat dhanuḥ dhūyamānam
sarvāsu dikṣu abhraghaneṣu vidyut iva dṛśyate
21. The great bow, adorned with gold and being waved, is seen in all directions, appearing like lightning amidst dense clouds.
उह्यमानश्च कृष्णेन वायुनेव बलाहकः ।
तावकं तद्बलं राजन्नर्जुनोऽस्त्रविदां वरः ।
गहनं शिशिरे कक्षं ददाहाग्निरिवोत्थितः ॥२२॥
22. uhyamānaśca kṛṣṇena vāyuneva balāhakaḥ ,
tāvakaṁ tadbalaṁ rājannarjuno'stravidāṁ varaḥ ,
gahanaṁ śiśire kakṣaṁ dadāhāgnirivotthitaḥ.
22. uhyamānaḥ ca kṛṣṇena vāyunā iva
balāhakaḥ tāvakam tat balam rājan
arjunaḥ astravidām varaḥ gahanam śiśire
kakṣam dadāha agniḥ iva utthitaḥ
22. rājan arjunaḥ astravidām varaḥ
kṛṣṇena vāyunā iva balāhakaḥ ca uhyamānaḥ
tāvakam tat balam utthitaḥ
agniḥ iva gahanaṃ śiśire kakṣam dadāha
22. O King, Arjuna, who is the foremost among weapon-experts, carried by Kṛṣṇa just as a cloud is carried by the wind, consumed your army as a blazing fire consumes a dense, dry thicket.
गाहमानमनीकानि महेन्द्रसदृशप्रभम् ।
धनंजयमपश्याम चतुर्दन्तमिव द्विपम् ॥२३॥
23. gāhamānamanīkāni mahendrasadṛśaprabham ,
dhanaṁjayamapaśyāma caturdantamiva dvipam.
23. gāhamānam anīkāni mahendrasadṛśaprabham
dhanañjayam apaśyāma caturdantam iva dvipam
23. apaśyāma dhanañjayam gāhamānam anīkāni
mahendrasadṛśaprabham caturdantam dvipam iva
23. We saw Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), penetrating the armies, whose splendor was like that of Mahendra, resembling a four-tusked elephant.
विक्षोभयन्तं सेनां ते त्रासयन्तं च पार्थिवान् ।
धनंजयमपश्याम नलिनीमिव कुञ्जरम् ॥२४॥
24. vikṣobhayantaṁ senāṁ te trāsayantaṁ ca pārthivān ,
dhanaṁjayamapaśyāma nalinīmiva kuñjaram.
24. vikṣobhayantam senām te trāsayantam ca pārthivān
dhanaṃjayam apaśyāma nalinīm iva kuñjaram
24. dhanaṃjayam apaśyāma te senām vikṣobhayantam
ca pārthivān trāsayantam nalinīm iva kuñjaram
24. We saw Dhananjaya (Arjuna) agitating your army and terrifying the kings, just as an elephant agitates a lotus pond.
त्रासयन्तं तथा योधान्धनुर्घोषेण पाण्डवम् ।
भूय एनमपश्याम सिंहं मृगगणा इव ॥२५॥
25. trāsayantaṁ tathā yodhāndhanurghoṣeṇa pāṇḍavam ,
bhūya enamapaśyāma siṁhaṁ mṛgagaṇā iva.
25. trāsayantam tathā yodhān dhanurghoṣeṇa pāṇḍavam
bhūya enam apaśyāma siṃham mṛgagaṇāḥ iva
25. apaśyāma bhūya enam pāṇḍavam tathā dhanurghoṣeṇa
yodhān trāsayantam mṛgagaṇāḥ iva siṃham
25. Similarly, we saw him (Arjuna), the Pandava, again, terrifying the warriors with the roar of his bow, just as a lion terrifies herds of deer.
सर्वलोकमहेष्वासौ वृषभौ सर्वधन्विनाम् ।
आमुक्तकवचौ कृष्णौ लोकमध्ये विरेजतुः ॥२६॥
26. sarvalokamaheṣvāsau vṛṣabhau sarvadhanvinām ,
āmuktakavacau kṛṣṇau lokamadhye virejatuḥ.
26. sarvalokamaheṣvāsau vṛṣabhau sarvadhanvinām
āmuktakavacau kṛṣṇau lokamadhye virejatuḥ
26. āmuktakavacau kṛṣṇau sarvalokamaheṣvāsau
sarvadhanvinām vṛṣabhau lokamadhye virejatuḥ
26. The two Krishnas (Arjuna and Vāsudeva), who were the greatest archers in all the world and the foremost among all bowmen, and who were wearing armor, shone brilliantly in the midst of the people.
अद्य सप्तदशाहानि वर्तमानस्य भारत ।
संग्रामस्यातिघोरस्य वध्यतां चाभितो युधि ॥२७॥
27. adya saptadaśāhāni vartamānasya bhārata ,
saṁgrāmasyātighorasya vadhyatāṁ cābhito yudhi.
27. adya saptadaśāhāni vartamānasya bhārata
saṃgrāmasya atighorasya vadhyatām ca abhitaḥ yudhi
27. bhārata adya atighorasya saṃgrāmasya vartamānasya
saptadaśāhāni ca yudhi abhitaḥ vadhyatām
27. O Bhārata, today marks the seventeenth day of this exceedingly fierce battle, and the slaughter continues on all sides in the war.
वायुनेव विधूतानि तवानीकानि सर्वशः ।
शरदम्भोदजालानि व्यशीर्यन्त समन्ततः ॥२८॥
28. vāyuneva vidhūtāni tavānīkāni sarvaśaḥ ,
śaradambhodajālāni vyaśīryanta samantataḥ.
28. vāyunā iva vidhūtāni tava anīkāni sarvaśaḥ
śarad-ambhodajālāni vyaśīryanta samantataḥ
28. tava anīkāni vāyunā iva vidhūtāni
śarad-ambhodajālāni samantataḥ sarvaśaḥ vyaśīryanta
28. Your armies, like masses of autumn clouds scattered by the wind, were completely dispersed everywhere.
तां नावमिव पर्यस्तां भ्रान्तवातां महार्णवे ।
तव सेनां महाराज सव्यसाची व्यकम्पयत् ॥२९॥
29. tāṁ nāvamiva paryastāṁ bhrāntavātāṁ mahārṇave ,
tava senāṁ mahārāja savyasācī vyakampayat.
29. tām nāvam iva paryastām bhrānta-vātām mahā-arṇave
tava senām mahārāja savyasācī vyakampayat
29. mahārāja savyasācī mahā-arṇave bhrānta-vātām
paryastām tām nāvam iva tava senām vyakampayat
29. O great king, Savyasācin (Arjuna) shook your army, as if it were a boat capsized and buffeted by swirling winds in the vast ocean.
क्व नु ते सूतपुत्रोऽभूत्क्व नु द्रोणः सहानुगः ।
अहं क्व च क्व चात्मा ते हार्दिक्यश्च तथा क्व नु ।
दुःशासनश्च भ्राता ते भ्रातृभिः सहितः क्व नु ॥३०॥
30. kva nu te sūtaputro'bhūtkva nu droṇaḥ sahānugaḥ ,
ahaṁ kva ca kva cātmā te hārdikyaśca tathā kva nu ,
duḥśāsanaśca bhrātā te bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ kva nu.
30. kva nu te sūtaputraḥ abhūt kva nu droṇaḥ
saha-anugaḥ aham kva ca kva ca ātmā
te hārdikyaḥ ca tathā kva nu duḥśāsanaḥ
ca bhrātā te bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ kva nu
30. kva nu te sūtaputraḥ abhūt kva nu droṇaḥ
saha-anugaḥ [abhūt] aham kva ca ātmā te kva
ca hārdikyaḥ ca tathā kva nu duḥśāsanaḥ ca
te bhrātā bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ kva nu [abhūt]
30. Where indeed was your son of Sūta (Karṇa)? Where was Droṇa with his followers? Where was I? And where was your own inner self (ātman)? And where, too, was Hārdikya (Kṛpa)? And where, indeed, was your brother Duḥśāsana, along with his other brothers?
बाणगोचरसंप्राप्तं प्रेक्ष्य चैव जयद्रथम् ।
संबन्धिनस्ते भ्रातॄंश्च सहायान्मातुलांस्तथा ॥३१॥
31. bāṇagocarasaṁprāptaṁ prekṣya caiva jayadratham ,
saṁbandhinaste bhrātṝṁśca sahāyānmātulāṁstathā.
31. bāṇa-gocara-saṃprāptam prekṣya ca eva jayadratham
sambandhinaḥ te bhrātṝn ca sahāyān mātulān tathā
31. ca eva prekṣya jayadratham bāṇa-gocara-saṃprāptam
te sambandhinaḥ bhrātṝn ca sahāyān tathā mātulān
31. And indeed, seeing Jayadratha, your relatives, brothers, allies, and uncles, all of whom had come within the range of arrows...
सर्वान्विक्रम्य मिषतो लोकांश्चाक्रम्य मूर्धनि ।
जयद्रथो हतो राजन्किं नु शेषमुपास्महे ॥३२॥
32. sarvānvikramya miṣato lokāṁścākramya mūrdhani ,
jayadratho hato rājankiṁ nu śeṣamupāsmahe.
32. sarvān vikramya miṣataḥ lokān ca ākramya mūrdhani
jayadrathaḥ hataḥ rājan kim nu śeṣam upāsmahe
32. rājan miṣataḥ sarvān vikramya lokān ca mūrdhani
ākramya jayadrathaḥ hataḥ kim nu śeṣam upāsmahe
32. O King, since Jayadratha, having overpowered all those who watched and having asserted his dominion over the worlds, has been killed, what more indeed remains for us to accomplish?
को वेह स पुमानस्ति यो विजेष्यति पाण्डवम् ।
तस्य चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि विविधानि महात्मनः ।
गाण्डीवस्य च निर्घोषो वीर्याणि हरते हि नः ॥३३॥
33. ko veha sa pumānasti yo vijeṣyati pāṇḍavam ,
tasya cāstrāṇi divyāni vividhāni mahātmanaḥ ,
gāṇḍīvasya ca nirghoṣo vīryāṇi harate hi naḥ.
33. kaḥ vā iha saḥ pumān asti yaḥ vijeṣyati
pāṇḍavam tasya ca astrāṇi divyāni
vividhāni mahātmanaḥ gāṇḍīvasya
ca nirghoṣaḥ vīryāṇi harate hi naḥ
33. iha kaḥ vā saḥ pumān asti yaḥ pāṇḍavam
vijeṣyati ca tasya mahātmanaḥ
divyāni vividhāni astrāṇi ca gāṇḍīvasya
nirghoṣaḥ hi naḥ vīryāṇi harate
33. Who indeed is that man here who will conquer the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna)? And his divine, various weapons, along with the roar of his Gāṇḍīva bow, certainly diminish our valor.
नष्टचन्द्रा यथा रात्रिः सेनेयं हतनायका ।
नागभग्नद्रुमा शुष्का नदीवाकुलतां गता ॥३४॥
34. naṣṭacandrā yathā rātriḥ seneyaṁ hatanāyakā ,
nāgabhagnadrumā śuṣkā nadīvākulatāṁ gatā.
34. naṣṭacandrā yathā rātriḥ senā iyam hatanāyakā
nāgabhagnadrumā śuṣkā nadī vā ākulatām gatā
34. iyam senā hatanāyakā yathā naṣṭacandrā rātriḥ
nāgabhagnadrumā śuṣkā nadī vā ākulatām gatā
34. This army, its leader slain, is like a night without a moon. It is distraught, like a dry river whose (bank's) trees have been shattered by elephants.
ध्वजिन्यां हतनेत्रायां यथेष्टं श्वेतवाहनः ।
चरिष्यति महाबाहुः कक्षेऽग्निरिव संज्वलन् ॥३५॥
35. dhvajinyāṁ hatanetrāyāṁ yatheṣṭaṁ śvetavāhanaḥ ,
cariṣyati mahābāhuḥ kakṣe'gniriva saṁjvalan.
35. dhvajinyām hatanetrāyām yathā iṣṭam śvetavāhanaḥ
cariṣyati mahābāhuḥ kakṣe agniḥ iva saṃjvalan
35. hatanetrāyām dhvajinyām mahābāhuḥ śvetavāhanaḥ
kakṣe saṃjvalan agniḥ iva yathā iṣṭam cariṣyati
35. In this army, whose leaders are slain, the mighty-armed Śvetavāhana (Arjuna) will move about as he pleases, blazing like a fire in a dry forest thicket.
सात्यकेश्चैव यो वेगो भीमसेनस्य चोभयोः ।
दारयेत गिरीन्सर्वाञ्शोषयेत च सागरान् ॥३६॥
36. sātyakeścaiva yo vego bhīmasenasya cobhayoḥ ,
dārayeta girīnsarvāñśoṣayeta ca sāgarān.
36. sātyakeḥ ca eva yaḥ vegaḥ bhīmasenasya ca
ubhayoḥ dārayeta girīn sarvān śoṣayeta ca sāgarān
36. ubhayoḥ sātyakeḥ ca bhīmasenasya ca yaḥ vegaḥ
sarvān girīn dārayeta ca sāgarān śoṣayeta
36. The impetuosity of both Satyaki and Bhimasena is such that it could tear apart all mountains and dry up the oceans.
उवाच वाक्यं यद्भीमः सभामध्ये विशां पते ।
कृतं तत्सकलं तेन भूयश्चैव करिष्यति ॥३७॥
37. uvāca vākyaṁ yadbhīmaḥ sabhāmadhye viśāṁ pate ,
kṛtaṁ tatsakalaṁ tena bhūyaścaiva kariṣyati.
37. uvāca vākyam yat bhīmaḥ sabhāmadhye viśām pate
kṛtam tat sakalam tena bhūyaḥ ca eva kariṣyati
37. viśām pate sabhāmadhye bhīmaḥ yat vākyam uvāca,
tat sakalam tena kṛtam,
ca eva bhūyaḥ kariṣyati
37. O lord of the people (viśām pate), whatever statement Bhima made in the assembly, he has accomplished all of it, and he will certainly do it again.
प्रमुखस्थे तदा कर्णे बलं पाण्डवरक्षितम् ।
दुरासदं तथा गुप्तं गूढं गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥३८॥
38. pramukhasthe tadā karṇe balaṁ pāṇḍavarakṣitam ,
durāsadaṁ tathā guptaṁ gūḍhaṁ gāṇḍīvadhanvanā.
38. pramukhasthte tadā karṇe balam pāṇḍavarakṣitam
durāsadam tathā guptam gūḍham gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
38. tadā karṇe pramukhasthte pāṇḍavarakṣitam balam
durāsadam tathā gāṇḍīvadhanvanā guptam gūḍham
38. Even when Karna was at the forefront, the army protected by the Pandavas was difficult to approach, well-guarded, and concealed by Arjuna, the wielder of the Gandiva bow (gāṇḍīvadhanvan).
युष्माभिस्तानि चीर्णानि यान्यसाधूनि साधुषु ।
अकारणकृतान्येव तेषां वः फलमागतम् ॥३९॥
39. yuṣmābhistāni cīrṇāni yānyasādhūni sādhuṣu ,
akāraṇakṛtānyeva teṣāṁ vaḥ phalamāgatam.
39. yuṣmābhiḥ tāni cīrṇāni yāni asādhūni sādhūṣu
akāraṇakṛtāni eva teṣām vaḥ phalam āgatam
39. yuṣmābhiḥ sādhūṣu yāni akāraṇakṛtāni asādhūni cīrṇāni eva,
teṣām phalam vaḥ āgatam
39. Those wrongful deeds (asādhu) that you committed against virtuous people (sādhu), acts that were done without any cause – their consequence (phala) has now indeed come upon you.
आत्मनोऽर्थे त्वया लोको यत्नतः सर्व आहृतः ।
स ते संशयितस्तात आत्मा च भरतर्षभ ॥४०॥
40. ātmano'rthe tvayā loko yatnataḥ sarva āhṛtaḥ ,
sa te saṁśayitastāta ātmā ca bharatarṣabha.
40. ātmanaḥ arthe tvayā lokaḥ yatnataḥ sarvaḥ āhṛtaḥ
saḥ te saṃśayitaḥ tāta ātmā ca bharatarṣabha
40. tāta bharatarṣabha tvayā ātmanaḥ arthe sarvaḥ
lokaḥ yatnataḥ āhṛtaḥ saḥ te saṃśayitaḥ ca ātmā
40. For your own sake, you have painstakingly gathered all the people. But now, dear one (tāta), that very world, and your own self (ātman), are in danger, O best of the Bharatas.
रक्ष दुर्योधनात्मानमात्मा सर्वस्य भाजनम् ।
भिन्ने हि भाजने तात दिशो गच्छति तद्गतम् ॥४१॥
41. rakṣa duryodhanātmānamātmā sarvasya bhājanam ,
bhinne hi bhājane tāta diśo gacchati tadgatam.
41. rakṣa duryodhana ātmānam ātmā sarvasya bhājanam
bhinne hi bhājane tāta diśaḥ gacchati tadgatam
41. duryodhana tāta ātmānam rakṣa hi ātmā sarvasya
bhājanam bhinne bhājane tadgatam diśaḥ gacchati
41. O Duryodhana, protect your own self (ātman), for the self (ātman) is the receptacle of all. Indeed, dear one (tāta), when the container is shattered, what was contained within it disperses in all directions.
हीयमानेन वै संधिः पर्येष्टव्यः समेन च ।
विग्रहो वर्धमानेन नीतिरेषा बृहस्पतेः ॥४२॥
42. hīyamānena vai saṁdhiḥ paryeṣṭavyaḥ samena ca ,
vigraho vardhamānena nītireṣā bṛhaspateḥ.
42. hīyamānena vai sandhiḥ paryeṣṭavyaḥ samena ca
vigrahaḥ vardhamānena nītiḥ eṣā bṛhaspateḥ
42. vai hīyamānena ca samena sandhiḥ paryeṣṭavyaḥ
vardhamānena vigrahaḥ (kāryaḥ) eṣā bṛhaspateḥ nītiḥ
42. Indeed, a weaker party should seek an alliance, and so should one of equal strength. However, a stronger party should engage in conflict (vigraha). This is the policy (nīti) of Bṛhaspati.
ते वयं पाण्डुपुत्रेभ्यो हीनाः स्वबलशक्तितः ।
अत्र ते पाण्डवैः सार्धं संधिं मन्ये क्षमं प्रभो ॥४३॥
43. te vayaṁ pāṇḍuputrebhyo hīnāḥ svabalaśaktitaḥ ,
atra te pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ saṁdhiṁ manye kṣamaṁ prabho.
43. te vayam pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ hīnāḥ svabalaśaktitaḥ atra
te pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham sandhim manye kṣamam prabho
43. prabho vayam te pāṇḍuputrebhyaḥ svabalaśaktitaḥ
hīnāḥ atra te pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham sandhim kṣamam manye
43. We are inferior to the sons of Pāṇḍu in our own strength and capabilities. Therefore, in this situation, O lord (prabho), I consider an alliance with the Pāṇḍavas to be appropriate for you.
न जानीते हि यः श्रेयः श्रेयसश्चावमन्यते ।
स क्षिप्रं भ्रश्यते राज्यान्न च श्रेयोऽनुविन्दति ॥४४॥
44. na jānīte hi yaḥ śreyaḥ śreyasaścāvamanyate ,
sa kṣipraṁ bhraśyate rājyānna ca śreyo'nuvindati.
44. na jānīte hi yaḥ śreyaḥ śreyasaḥ ca avamanyate saḥ
kṣipraṃ bhraśyate rājyāt na ca śreyaḥ anuvindati
44. hi yaḥ śreyaḥ na jānīte ca śreyasaḥ avamanyate saḥ
rājyāt kṣipraṃ bhraśyate ca śreyaḥ na anuvindati
44. Indeed, whoever does not know what is good fortune and disregards what is good fortune (śreyas), quickly falls from his kingdom and does not attain welfare.
प्रणिपत्य हि राजानं राज्यं यदि लभेमहि ।
श्रेयः स्यान्न तु मौढ्येन राजन्गन्तुं पराभवम् ॥४५॥
45. praṇipatya hi rājānaṁ rājyaṁ yadi labhemahi ,
śreyaḥ syānna tu mauḍhyena rājangantuṁ parābhavam.
45. praṇipatya hi rājānam rājyam yadi labhemahi śreyaḥ
syāt na tu mauḍhyena rājan gantum parābhavam
45. hi rājānam praṇipatya yadi rājyam labhemahi śreyaḥ
syāt tu rājan mauḍhyena parābhavam gantum na (syāt)
45. Indeed, if we were to obtain the kingdom by bowing down to the king, that would be good fortune (śreyas). But, O King, it is not proper to invite defeat through foolishness.
वैचित्रवीर्यवचनात्कृपाशीलो युधिष्ठिरः ।
विनियुञ्जीत राज्ये त्वां गोविन्दवचनेन च ॥४६॥
46. vaicitravīryavacanātkṛpāśīlo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
viniyuñjīta rājye tvāṁ govindavacanena ca.
46. vaicitravīryavacanāt kṛpāśīlaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
viniyuñjīta rājye tvām govindavacanena ca
46. kṛpāśīlaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ vaicitravīryavacanāt
ca govindavacanena tvām rājye viniyuñjīta
46. By the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (son of Vicitravīrya), and also by the counsel of Govinda, the compassionate Yudhiṣṭhira would appoint you to the kingdom.
यद्ब्रूयाद्धि हृषीकेशो राजानमपराजितम् ।
अर्जुनं भीमसेनं च सर्वं कुर्युरसंशयम् ॥४७॥
47. yadbrūyāddhi hṛṣīkeśo rājānamaparājitam ,
arjunaṁ bhīmasenaṁ ca sarvaṁ kuryurasaṁśayam.
47. yat brūyāt hi hṛṣīkeśaḥ rājānam aparājitam
arjunam bhīmasenam ca sarvam kuryuḥ asaṃśayam
47. hi hṛṣīkeśaḥ aparājitam rājānam arjunam ca
bhīmasenam yat brūyāt sarvam asaṃśayam kuryuḥ
47. Indeed, whatever Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna) might say to the unconquered King (Yudhiṣṭhira), Arjuna, and Bhīmasena, they would all undoubtedly accomplish.
नातिक्रमिष्यते कृष्णो वचनं कौरवस्य ह ।
धृतराष्ट्रस्य मन्येऽहं नापि कृष्णस्य पाण्डवः ॥४८॥
48. nātikramiṣyate kṛṣṇo vacanaṁ kauravasya ha ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya manye'haṁ nāpi kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavaḥ.
48. na atikramiṣyate kṛṣṇaḥ vacanam kauravasya ha
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya manye aham na api kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavaḥ
48. kṛṣṇaḥ kauravasya vacanam ha na atikramiṣyate aham
manye dhṛtarāṣṭrasya na api kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavaḥ
48. Kṛṣṇa will certainly not transgress the word of the Kaurava. I believe that Dhṛtarāṣṭra will not transgress Kṛṣṇa's word, nor will the Pāṇḍava brothers.
एतत्क्षममहं मन्ये तव पार्थैरविग्रहम् ।
न त्वा ब्रवीमि कार्पण्यान्न प्राणपरिरक्षणात् ।
पथ्यं राजन्ब्रवीमि त्वां तत्परासुः स्मरिष्यसि ॥४९॥
49. etatkṣamamahaṁ manye tava pārthairavigraham ,
na tvā bravīmi kārpaṇyānna prāṇaparirakṣaṇāt ,
pathyaṁ rājanbravīmi tvāṁ tatparāsuḥ smariṣyasi.
49. etat kṣamam aham manye tava pārthaiḥ
avigraham na tvā bravīmi kārpaṇyāt
na prāṇa-parirakṣaṇāt pathyam rājan
bravīmi tvām tatparāsuḥ smariṣyasi
49. aham manye etat pārthaiḥ avigraham
tava kṣamam na bravīmi tvā kārpaṇyāt
na prāṇa-parirakṣaṇāt rājan bravīmi
tvām pathyam tatparāsuḥ smariṣyasi
49. I consider this, a state of non-conflict with the Pāṇḍavas, to be suitable for you. I do not speak to you out of weakness or miserliness (kārpaṇya), nor for the sake of preserving my own life. O King, I speak what is beneficial to you; you will remember this when your life-breath (prāṇa) is about to depart.
इति वृद्धो विलप्यैतत्कृपः शारद्वतो वचः ।
दीर्घमुष्णं च निःश्वस्य शुशोच च मुमोह च ॥५०॥
50. iti vṛddho vilapyaitatkṛpaḥ śāradvato vacaḥ ,
dīrghamuṣṇaṁ ca niḥśvasya śuśoca ca mumoha ca.
50. iti vṛddhaḥ vilapya etat kṛpaḥ śāradvataḥ vacaḥ
dīrgham uṣṇam ca niḥśvasya śuśoca ca mumoha ca
50. vṛddhaḥ śāradvataḥ kṛpaḥ iti etat vacaḥ vilapya
dīrgham uṣṇam ca niḥśvasya ca śuśoca ca mumoha
50. Having thus lamented this speech, the aged Kṛpa, son of Śāradvat, sighed long and hot, then grieved and fainted.
