Dhritarashtra said: "Sanjaya, please tell me how the battle resumed after that Kuru prince, Bhurishravas, was slain in such a condition."
संजय उवाच ।
भूरिश्रवसि संक्रान्ते परलोकाय भारत ।
वासुदेवं महाबाहुरर्जुनः समचूचुदत् ॥२॥

Sanjaya said: "O descendant of Bharata, after Bhurishravas had departed to the other world, the mighty-armed Arjuna urged Vasudeva (Krishna)."
चोदयाश्वान्भृशं कृष्ण यतो राजा जयद्रथः ।
अस्तमेति महाबाहो त्वरमाणो दिवाकरः ॥३॥

"O Krishna, O mighty-armed one, drive the horses swiftly towards King Jayadratha, as the sun is rapidly setting."
एतद्धि पुरुषव्याघ्र महदभ्युद्यतं मया ।
कार्यं संरक्ष्यते चैष कुरुसेनामहारथैः ॥४॥

4. etaddhi puruṣavyāghra mahadabhyudyataṁ mayā ,
kāryaṁ saṁrakṣyate caiṣa kurusenāmahārathaiḥ.

"Indeed, O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), this great task has been undertaken by me. And he (Jayadratha) is being protected by the great chariot warriors of the Kuru army."
नास्तमेति यथा सूर्यो यथा सत्यं भवेद्वचः ।
चोदयाश्वांस्तथा कृष्ण यथा हन्यां जयद्रथम् ॥५॥

5. nāstameti yathā sūryo yathā satyaṁ bhavedvacaḥ ,

O Kṛṣṇa, just as the sun never sets, and just as a statement should be true, similarly urge the horses forward so that I may slay Jayadratha.

Then, the mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa, who was skilled in horses, urged the silver-colored horses towards Jayadratha's chariot.
तं प्रयान्तममोघेषुमुत्पतद्भिरिवाशुगैः ।
त्वरमाणा महाराज सेनामुख्याः समाव्रजन् ॥७॥

O great king, the chief commanders of the army, hurrying, came rushing after him - the one with unfailing arrows - as he advanced swiftly, as if with flying swift arrows.
दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च वृषसेनोऽथ मद्रराट् ।
अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव स्वयमेव च सैन्धवः ॥८॥

8. duryodhanaśca karṇaśca vṛṣaseno'tha madrarāṭ ,

Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Vṛṣasena, then the king of Madra (Śalya), Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Saṃdhava (Jayadratha) himself.
समासाद्य तु बीभत्सुः सैन्धवं प्रमुखे स्थितम् ।
नेत्राभ्यां क्रोधदीप्ताभ्यां संप्रैक्षन्निर्दहन्निव ॥९॥

Arjuna (bībhatsu), having approached Jayadratha (saindhava) who stood before him, gazed intently with eyes blazing with anger, as if burning him up.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा राधेयं त्वरितोऽब्रवीत् ।
अर्जुनं वीक्ष्य संयान्तं जयद्रथरथं प्रति ॥१०॥

10. tato duryodhano rājā rādheyaṁ tvarito'bravīt ,
arjunaṁ vīkṣya saṁyāntaṁ jayadratharathaṁ prati.

tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā rādheyam tvaritaḥ abravīt

Then King Duryodhana, having seen Arjuna swiftly advancing towards Jayadratha's chariot, quickly addressed Karna (rādheya).
अयं स वैकर्तन युद्धकालो विदर्शयस्वात्मबलं महात्मन् ।
यथा न वध्येत रणेऽर्जुनेन जयद्रथः कर्ण तथा कुरुष्व ॥११॥
यथा न वध्येत रणेऽर्जुनेन जयद्रथः कर्ण तथा कुरुष्व ॥११॥
11. ayaṁ sa vaikartana yuddhakālo; vidarśayasvātmabalaṁ mahātman ,
yathā na vadhyeta raṇe'rjunena; jayadrathaḥ karṇa tathā kuruṣva.

vaikartana,
mahātman karṇa! ayam saḥ yuddhākālaḥ.
ātmabalam vidarśayasva! yathā jayadrathaḥ arjunena raṇe na vadhyeta,
tathā kuruṣva!
mahātman karṇa! ayam saḥ yuddhākālaḥ.
ātmabalam vidarśayasva! yathā jayadrathaḥ arjunena raṇe na vadhyeta,

“O Karna (vaikartana), O great-souled one (mahātman)! This is that time for battle. Display your own strength! Act so that Jayadratha is not killed by Arjuna in battle.”
अल्पावशिष्टं दिवसं नृवीर विघातयस्वाद्य रिपुं शरौघैः ।
दिनक्षयं प्राप्य नरप्रवीर ध्रुवं हि नः कर्ण जयो भविष्यति ॥१२॥

12. alpāvaśiṣṭaṁ divasaṁ nṛvīra; vighātayasvādya ripuṁ śaraughaiḥ ,
dinakṣayaṁ prāpya narapravīra; dhruvaṁ hi naḥ karṇa jayo bhaviṣyati.

alpa avaśiṣṭam divasam nṛvīra
vighātayasva adya ripum śaraughaiḥ

nṛvīra karṇa! adya alpa avaśiṣṭam divasam śaraughaiḥ ripum vighātayasva.
narapravīra! dinakṣayam prāpya hi naḥ dhruvam jayaḥ bhaviṣyati.
narapravīra! dinakṣayam prāpya hi naḥ dhruvam jayaḥ bhaviṣyati.
12.
“O hero among men (nṛvīra)! Today, with only a little of the day remaining, destroy the enemy with showers of arrows. O foremost among men (narapravīra), Karna! Our victory will certainly be assured once the end of the day is reached.”
सैन्धवे रक्ष्यमाणे तु सूर्यस्यास्तमयं प्रति ।
मिथ्याप्रतिज्ञः कौन्तेयः प्रवेक्ष्यति हुताशनम् ॥१३॥

13. saindhave rakṣyamāṇe tu sūryasyāstamayaṁ prati ,
mithyāpratijñaḥ kaunteyaḥ pravekṣyati hutāśanam.

If Jayadratha, the son of Sindhu, is protected until the sun's setting, then the son of Kunti (Arjuna), having failed his vow, will enter the fire.
अनर्जुनायां च भुवि मुहूर्तमपि मानद ।
जीवितुं नोत्सहेरन्वै भ्रातरोऽस्य सहानुगाः ॥१४॥

14.
O giver of honor, on an earth without Arjuna, his brothers, along with their followers, would indeed not be able to live even for a moment.
विनष्टैः पाण्डवेयैश्च सशैलवनकाननाम् ।
वसुंधरामिमां कर्ण भोक्ष्यामो हतकण्टकाम् ॥१५॥

15. vinaṣṭaiḥ pāṇḍaveyaiśca saśailavanakānanām ,

15.
O Karṇa, once the Pāṇḍavas are destroyed, we shall enjoy this earth, along with its mountains, forests, and groves, with all its thorns (enemies) removed.
दैवेनोपहतः पार्थो विपरीतश्च मानद ।
कार्याकार्यमजानन्वै प्रतिज्ञां कृतवान्रणे ॥१६॥

16. daivenopahataḥ pārtho viparītaśca mānada ,
kāryākāryamajānanvai pratijñāṁ kṛtavānraṇe.

O giver of honor, Pārtha (Arjuna), struck by fate and bewildered, indeed made a vow in battle, not knowing what should and should not be done.
नूनमात्मविनाशाय पाण्डवेन किरीटिना ।
प्रतिज्ञेयं कृता कर्ण जयद्रथवधं प्रति ॥१७॥

17. nūnamātmavināśāya pāṇḍavena kirīṭinā ,
pratijñeyaṁ kṛtā karṇa jayadrathavadhaṁ prati.

O Karṇa, this vow concerning the killing of Jayadratha has certainly been undertaken by Arjuna, the wearer of the diadem, for his own self-destruction (ātman).
कथं जीवति दुर्धर्षे त्वयि राधेय फल्गुनः ।
अनस्तंगत आदित्ये हन्यात्सैन्धवकं नृपम् ॥१८॥

18. kathaṁ jīvati durdharṣe tvayi rādheya phalgunaḥ ,
anastaṁgata āditye hanyātsaindhavakaṁ nṛpam.

O son of Rādhā (Karṇa), how can Arjuna survive, or how could he kill King Jayadratha, the lord of Sindhu, when you are unassailable and the sun has not yet set?
रक्षितं मद्रराजेन कृपेण च महात्मना ।
जयद्रथं रणमुखे कथं हन्याद्धनंजयः ॥१९॥

19. rakṣitaṁ madrarājena kṛpeṇa ca mahātmanā ,

How could Arjuna kill Jayadratha in the forefront of battle, when he is being protected by the King of Madras (Śalya) and by the great-souled Kṛpa?

drauṇinā rakṣyamāṇam ca mayā duḥśāsanena ca

And how will Arjuna, driven by the impulse of time, reach Jayadratha while he is being protected by Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman), by me, and by Duḥśāsana?

O respected one, Karṇa, the son of Rādhā, thus addressed by your son (Duryodhana), replied this speech to Duryodhana, the foremost among the Kurus.

He was greatly distressed in battle by the brave Bhīmasena, who was an archer with a firm aim, through numerous volleys of arrows.

O giver of honor, I stand in battle now, thinking, 'This is how I must stand.' Not even a single limb of mine stirs, tormented as I am by the arrows of war.

But, O king, I will fight in battle with my supreme power (śakti) in such a way that this chief of the Pāṇḍavas (Arjuna) will not kill Saindhava.

Indeed, while I am fighting, the hero Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the ambidextrous one (savyasācī), will not reach Saindhava with the sharp arrows that he is shooting.

Enraged for the sake of Saindhava (Jayadratha), they surrounded Arjuna (kirīṭin), who was swiftly moving on the chariot paths, amidst the sounds of his bowstring and the slapping of his palms on the bow.

All those experts in warfare, fearless, attacked Arjuna (Pārtha), who was skilled in battle, as if he were Death (Antaka) with his gaping mouth.

Protecting Saindhava (Jayadratha) by placing him behind them, they desired to kill Arjuna and Krishna (Acyuta), wishing for the sun's setting as the sun (bhāskara) was turning red.

They, with arms like the bodies of serpents, drew their bows and released hundreds of arrows, shining like sunbeams, towards Arjuna (Phalguna).

Arjuna, the crowned one, intoxicated by the fervor of battle, having cut each of those who had been hurled down and those who were advancing into two, three, or eight pieces, then pierced them in the combat.

O King, the son of Śaradvatī (Aśvatthāman), whose banner displayed a lion's tail, demonstrating his own power (śakti), then checked Arjuna.

Then, all the foremost among the Kauravas, indeed all the great chariot-fighters (mahāratha), surrounded him from all directions with a mighty host of chariots.

Having countered the missiles of both Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman) and Śāradvata (Kṛpa) with his own weapons, he then struck each and every one of them with nine arrows.

And indeed, those great charioteers, desiring the sunset and hurrying, quickly formed a dense circle of chariots all around him.

Karna, the great warrior, struck them back repeatedly with sixty arrows each. O King, that battle was Karna's against many foes.

O revered one, there we witnessed a marvel regarding Karna (sūtaputra): that he alone, enraged in battle, resisted three chariots.

But the mighty-armed Arjuna struck Karna, the son of Vikartana (Surya), in battle with a hundred arrows, hitting all his vital spots.

With all his limbs drenched in blood, the mighty Karna (sūtaputra), that hero, retaliated by piercing Arjuna with fifty arrows. Seeing Karna's (sūtaputra) swiftness, Arjuna could not tolerate it in battle.

Then Pārtha (Arjuna), swiftly cutting his opponent's bow, the heroic Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) pierced him in the middle of the chest with nine arrows.

And Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), swiftly and at that urgent moment, shot an arrow brilliant as the sun in battle for his opponent's destruction.

Drauṇi (Aśvatthāmā), with a sharp, crescent-shaped arrow, cut down that swiftly approaching arrow. The severed arrow then fell to the ground.

Then the mighty son of Sūta, Karṇa, a slayer of his enemies, took up another bow and, desiring retaliation, overwhelmed Phālguna (Arjuna) with thousands of arrows.

Those two great charioteers, lion-like men roaring like bulls, covered the sky with a flood of straight-flying arrows. Rendered invisible by the torrent of arrows, they struck each other.

'I am Pārtha (Arjuna), stand your ground!' 'I am Karṇa, stand your ground, Phālguna (Arjuna)!' Threatening each other in this manner, those two tormented each other with barbed words.

In battle, those two heroes fought in a manner that was wonderfully agile and excellent. And they became a spectacular sight for all the assembled warriors.

O great king, being praised in battle by the Siddhas, Caraṇas, and Vātikas, those two fought, each intent on the other's destruction.

O King, then Duryodhana addressed your warriors, saying: 'Protect Radheya (Karṇa) diligently! Karṇa (Vṛṣa/Radheya) himself told me that he will not return from battle without killing Arjuna.'

O King, at that moment, having seen Karṇa's prowess, (someone, implicitly Arjuna) sent Karṇa's four horses to the realm of death with four excellent arrows released up to the ear.

And with a dart, (he) removed his charioteer from the chariot seat, and covered (Karṇa) with arrows while your son (Duryodhana) watched.

He (Karṇa), being covered in battle, with his horses killed and his charioteer killed, and bewildered by the net of arrows, did not know what to do.

O great king, when Ashvatthama saw him thus deprived of his chariot, he then mounted him onto his own chariot and fought Arjuna again.

But the King of Madra struck the son of Kunti (Kaunteya) with thirty arrows. And Sharadvata (Kṛpa) showered Vasudeva (Kṛṣṇa) with twenty. He then struck Dhananjaya (Arjuna) with twelve arrows.

O great king, the King of Sindhu (Jayadratha) with four (arrows) and Vṛṣasena with seven (arrows) each separately pierced Kṛṣṇa and Pārtha (Arjuna).

In the same way, Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the son of Kunti, pierced them in return. He struck Drona's son (Ashvatthama) with sixty-four (arrows) and the King of Madra with a hundred (arrows).

Arjuna, the son of Pṛthā, having pierced Jayadratha (Saindhava) with ten spears, Vṛṣasena with three arrows, and Kṛpa (Śāradvata) with twenty, roared loudly.

Desiring to thwart the vow of Arjuna, the ambidextrous one, your (Duryodhana's) assembled warriors swiftly rushed towards Arjuna, the conqueror of wealth.

Then Arjuna manifested an all-encompassing weapon, terrifying the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. The Kurus, with splendid chariots, opposed him, the son of Pāṇḍu, and showered forth torrents of arrows.

O Bhārata, when that tumultuous, extremely fierce, and bewildering situation had arisen, that prince, Arjuna, who wore a diadem, was not deluded, even while discharging arrows.

Aspiring to regain the kingdom, the great-souled (mahātmā), ambidextrous Arjuna (savyasācī), remembering the sufferings (kleśān) inflicted by the Kurus during the twelve years, filled all directions with his countless arrows released from the Gāṇḍīva bow.

The sky became filled with blazing meteors, and numerous birds fell onto the bodies; for the enraged Arjuna, crowned with a diadem (kirīṭamālī), slays his enemies with his tawny bowstring and a mighty roaring sound.

The greatly renowned Arjuna (kirīṭamālī), conqueror of armies (anīkajit), with his mighty bow, struck down the chief Kuru warriors - who were mounted on excellent horses and foremost elephants - by means of his arrows.

And the kings (narādhipāḥ), formidable to behold (bhīmadarśanāḥ), seizing heavy maces, iron clubs, swords, spears, and other great weapons, suddenly rushed towards Arjuna (Pārtha) in battle.
