वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वानुययौ पार्थो हयं तं कामचारिणम् ।
न्यवर्तत ततो वाजी येन नागाह्वयं पुरम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvānuyayau pārtho hayaṁ taṁ kāmacāriṇam ,
nyavartata tato vājī yena nāgāhvayaṁ puram.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus, Pārtha (Arjuna) followed that freely wandering horse. From there, the horse turned back towards the city named Nāgāhvaya (Hastināpura).
तं निवृत्तं तु शुश्राव चारेणैव युधिष्ठिरः ।
श्रुत्वार्जुनं कुशलिनं स च हृष्टमनाभवत् ॥२॥
2. taṁ nivṛttaṁ tu śuśrāva cāreṇaiva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
śrutvārjunaṁ kuśalinaṁ sa ca hṛṣṭamanābhavat.
2. tam nivṛttam tu śuśrāva cāreṇa eva yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
śrutvā arjunam kuśalinam saḥ ca hṛṣṭamanā abhavat

2. Yudhiṣṭhira heard of its (the horse's) return through a spy. And having heard that Arjuna was well, he (Yudhiṣṭhira) became joyful in mind.
विजयस्य च तत्कर्म गान्धारविषये तदा ।
श्रुत्वान्येषु च देशेषु स सुप्रीतोऽभवन्नृपः ॥३॥
3. vijayasya ca tatkarma gāndhāraviṣaye tadā ,
śrutvānyeṣu ca deśeṣu sa suprīto'bhavannṛpaḥ.
3. vijayasya ca tat karma gāndhāraviṣaye tadā śrutvā
anyeṣu ca deśeṣu saḥ suprītaḥ abhavat nṛpaḥ

3. At that time, having heard of Vijaya's action in the Gandhara region and in other lands as well, the king became very pleased.
एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु द्वादशीं माघपाक्षिकीम् ।
इष्टं गृहीत्वा नक्षत्रं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥४॥
4. etasminneva kāle tu dvādaśīṁ māghapākṣikīm ,
iṣṭaṁ gṛhītvā nakṣatraṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
4. etasmin eva kāle tu dvādaśīm māghapākṣikīm
iṣṭam gṛhītvā nakṣatram dharmarājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

4. And at this very time, Yudhishthira, the king of (dharma), having chosen the auspicious twelfth day of the Māgha fortnight and a favorable constellation...
समानाय्य महातेजाः सर्वान्भ्रातॄन्महामनाः ।
भीमं च नकुलं चैव सहदेवं च कौरवः ॥५॥
5. samānāyya mahātejāḥ sarvānbhrātṝnmahāmanāḥ ,
bhīmaṁ ca nakulaṁ caiva sahadevaṁ ca kauravaḥ.
5. samānāyya mahātejāḥ sarvān bhrātṝn mahāmanāḥ
bhīmam ca nakulam ca eva sahadevam ca kauravaḥ

5. The greatly effulgent and great-minded Kuru, having summoned all his brothers - Bhīma, Nakula, and Sahadeva as well -
प्रोवाचेदं वचः काले तदा धर्मभृतां वरः ।
आमन्त्र्य वदतां श्रेष्ठो भीमं भीमपराक्रमम् ॥६॥
6. provācedaṁ vacaḥ kāle tadā dharmabhṛtāṁ varaḥ ,
āmantrya vadatāṁ śreṣṭho bhīmaṁ bhīmaparākramam.
6. provāca idam vacaḥ kāle tadā dharmabhṛtām varaḥ
āmantrya vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ bhīmam bhīmaparākramam
6. tadā kāle dharmabhṛtām varaḥ vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ
bhīmam bhīmaparākramam āmantrya idam vacaḥ provāca
6. Then, at that opportune moment, the best among those who uphold (dharma) and the foremost among speakers, having addressed Bhīma, who possessed formidable prowess, uttered these words.
आयाति भीमसेनासौ सहाश्वेन तवानुजः ।
यथा मे पुरुषाः प्राहुर्ये धनंजयसारिणः ॥७॥
7. āyāti bhīmasenāsau sahāśvena tavānujaḥ ,
yathā me puruṣāḥ prāhurye dhanaṁjayasāriṇaḥ.
7. āyāti bhīmasenaḥ asau saha aśvena tava anujaḥ
yathā me puruṣāḥ prāhuḥ ye dhanaṃjayasāriṇaḥ
7. yathā me puruṣāḥ ye dhanaṃjayasāriṇaḥ prāhuḥ,
asau tava anujaḥ bhīmasenaḥ aśvena saha āyāti.
7. That Bhīmasena, your younger brother, is approaching with his horse, as my men who accompany Dhananjaya (Arjuna) report.
उपस्थितश्च कालोऽयमभितो वर्तते हयः ।
माघी च पौर्णमासीयं मासः शेषो वृकोदर ॥८॥
8. upasthitaśca kālo'yamabhito vartate hayaḥ ,
māghī ca paurṇamāsīyaṁ māsaḥ śeṣo vṛkodara.
8. upasthitaḥ ca kālaḥ ayam abhitaḥ vartate hayaḥ
māghī ca paurṇamāsī iyam māsaḥ śeṣaḥ vṛkodara
8. ayam kālaḥ upasthitaḥ ca.
hayaḥ abhitaḥ vartate.
iyam māghī paurṇamāsī ca,
vṛkodara,
māsaḥ śeṣaḥ.
8. This appointed time has arrived, and the horse is now nearby. This is the full moon of Māgha, O Vṛkodara; only one month remains.
तत्प्रस्थाप्यन्तु विद्वांसो ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः ।
वाजिमेधार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं देशं पश्यन्तु यज्ञियम् ॥९॥
9. tatprasthāpyantu vidvāṁso brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ ,
vājimedhārthasiddhyarthaṁ deśaṁ paśyantu yajñiyam.
9. tat prasthāpyantu vidvāṃsaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ vedapāragāḥ
vājimedhārthasiddhyartham deśam paśyantu yajñiyam
9. tat vidvāṃsaḥ vedapāragāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ prasthāpyantu.
te vājimedhārthasiddhyartham yajñiyam deśam paśyantu.
9. Therefore, let learned Brahmins, who are experts in the Vedas, be dispatched to survey a suitable place for the purpose of achieving the goal of the horse- (aśvamedha) Vedic ritual (yajña).
इत्युक्तः स तु तच्चक्रे भीमो नृपतिशासनम् ।
हृष्टः श्रुत्वा नरपतेरायान्तं सव्यसाचिनम् ॥१०॥
10. ityuktaḥ sa tu taccakre bhīmo nṛpatiśāsanam ,
hṛṣṭaḥ śrutvā narapaterāyāntaṁ savyasācinam.
10. iti uktaḥ saḥ tu tat cakre bhīmaḥ nṛpatiśāsanam
hṛṣṭaḥ śrutvā narapateḥ āyāntam savyasācinam
10. iti uktaḥ saḥ bhīmaḥ tu narapateḥ tat śāsanam cakre,
savyasācinam āyāntam śrutvā hṛṣṭaḥ.
10. Thus spoken to, Bhīma indeed carried out that command of the king, joyful upon hearing of Savyasācin (Arjuna) approaching.
ततो ययौ भीमसेनः प्राज्ञैः स्थपतिभिः सह ।
ब्राह्मणानग्रतः कृत्वा कुशलान्यज्ञकर्मसु ॥११॥
11. tato yayau bhīmasenaḥ prājñaiḥ sthapatibhiḥ saha ,
brāhmaṇānagrataḥ kṛtvā kuśalānyajñakarmasu.
11. tataḥ yayau bhīmasenaḥ prājñaiḥ sthapatibhiḥ saha
brāhmaṇān agrataḥ kṛtvā kuśalān yajñakarmasu
11. tataḥ bhīmasenaḥ yajñakarmasu kuśalān brāhmaṇān
agrataḥ kṛtvā prājñaiḥ sthapatibhiḥ saha yayau
11. Then Bhimasena went, accompanied by skilled architects, having placed at the forefront the Brahmins who were expert in the performance of (Vedic ritual)s.
तं सशालचयग्रामं संप्रतोलीविटङ्किनम् ।
मापयामास कौरव्यो यज्ञवाटं यथाविधि ॥१२॥
12. taṁ saśālacayagrāmaṁ saṁpratolīviṭaṅkinam ,
māpayāmāsa kauravyo yajñavāṭaṁ yathāvidhi.
12. tam saśālacayagrāmam saṃpratolīviṭaṅkinam
māpayāmāsa kauravyaḥ yajñavāṭam yathāvidhi
12. kauravyaḥ saśālacayagrāmam saṃpratolīviṭaṅkinam
tam yajñavāṭam yathāvidhi māpayāmāsa
12. The Kuru prince had that (Vedic ritual) ground measured out and constructed according to the prescribed rules, complete with rows of halls and dwelling places, and adorned with broad streets and balconies.
सदः सपत्नीसदनं साग्नीध्रमपि चोत्तरम् ।
कारयामास विधिवन्मणिहेमविभूषितम् ॥१३॥
13. sadaḥ sapatnīsadanaṁ sāgnīdhramapi cottaram ,
kārayāmāsa vidhivanmaṇihemavibhūṣitam.
13. sadaḥ sapatnīsadanam sāgnīdharam api ca
uttaram kārayāmāsa vidhivat maṇihemavibhūṣitam
13. sadaḥ sapatnīsadanam sāgnīdharam api ca
uttaram maṇihemavibhūṣitam vidhivat kārayāmāsa
13. He also had the assembly hall, the wives' quarters, the Agnimdhra fire-chamber, and the northern hall constructed properly, adorned with jewels and gold.
स्तम्भान्कनकचित्रांश्च तोरणानि बृहन्ति च ।
यज्ञायतनदेशेषु दत्त्वा शुद्धं च काञ्चनम् ॥१४॥
14. stambhānkanakacitrāṁśca toraṇāni bṛhanti ca ,
yajñāyatanadeśeṣu dattvā śuddhaṁ ca kāñcanam.
14. stambhān kanakacitrān ca toraṇāni bṛhanti ca
yajñāyatanadeśeṣu dattvā śuddham ca kāñcanam
14. yajñāyatanadeśeṣu kanakacitrān stambhān ca
bṛhanti toraṇāni ca śuddham kāñcanam dattvā
14. And having established pillars decorated with gold and large gateways in the areas of the (Vedic ritual) altars, he also provided pure gold.
अन्तःपुराणि राज्ञां च नानादेशनिवासिनाम् ।
कारयामास धर्मात्मा तत्र तत्र यथाविधि ॥१५॥
15. antaḥpurāṇi rājñāṁ ca nānādeśanivāsinām ,
kārayāmāsa dharmātmā tatra tatra yathāvidhi.
15. antaḥpurāṇi rājñām ca nānādeśanivāsinām
kārayāmāsa dharmātmā tatra tatra yathāvidhi
15. dharmātmā kārayāmāsa antaḥpurāṇi rājñām ca
nānādeśanivāsinām tatra tatra yathāvidhi
15. The righteous one (dharmātman) also had inner palaces built for kings and residents from various countries, here and there, according to the prescribed rites.
ब्राह्मणानां च वेश्मानि नानादेशसमेयुषाम् ।
कारयामास भीमः स विविधानि ह्यनेकशः ॥१६॥
16. brāhmaṇānāṁ ca veśmāni nānādeśasameyuṣām ,
kārayāmāsa bhīmaḥ sa vividhāni hyanekaśaḥ.
16. brāhmaṇānām ca veśmāni nānādeśasameyuṣām
kārayāmāsa bhīmaḥ saḥ vividhāni hi anekaśaḥ
16. saḥ bhīmaḥ kārayāmāsa ca veśmāni vividhāni
hi anekaśaḥ brāhmaṇānām nānādeśasameyuṣām
16. And that Bhīma also had many diverse dwellings built for brahmins who had assembled from various countries.
तथा संप्रेषयामास दूतान्नृपतिशासनात् ।
भीमसेनो महाराज राज्ञामक्लिष्टकर्मणाम् ॥१७॥
17. tathā saṁpreṣayāmāsa dūtānnṛpatiśāsanāt ,
bhīmaseno mahārāja rājñāmakliṣṭakarmaṇām.
17. tathā sampreṣayāmāsa dūtān nṛpatiśāsanāt
bhīmasenaḥ mahārāja rājñām akliṣṭakarmaṇām
17. tathā mahārāja bhīmasenaḥ sampreṣayāmāsa
dūtān nṛpatiśāsanāt rājñām akliṣṭakarmaṇām
17. Similarly, O great king, Bhīmasena sent envoys in accordance with the command of the kings, specifically to those kings whose actions were effortless (akliṣṭakarman).
ते प्रियार्थं कुरुपतेराययुर्नृपसत्तमाः ।
रत्नान्यनेकान्यादाय स्त्रियोऽश्वानायुधानि च ॥१८॥
18. te priyārthaṁ kurupaterāyayurnṛpasattamāḥ ,
ratnānyanekānyādāya striyo'śvānāyudhāni ca.
18. te priyārtham kurupateḥ āyayuḥ nṛpasattamāḥ
ratnāni anekāni ādāya striyaḥ aśvān āyudhāni ca
18. te nṛpasattamāḥ kurupateḥ priyārtham āyayuḥ
ādāya anekāni ratnāni striyaḥ aśvān āyudhāni ca
18. Those foremost among kings came for the pleasure of the lord of Kurus, bringing many jewels, women, horses, and weapons.
तेषां निविशतां तेषु शिबिरेषु सहस्रशः ।
नर्दतः सागरस्येव शब्दो दिवमिवास्पृशत् ॥१९॥
19. teṣāṁ niviśatāṁ teṣu śibireṣu sahasraśaḥ ,
nardataḥ sāgarasyeva śabdo divamivāspṛśat.
19. teṣām niviśatām teṣu śibireṣu sahasraśaḥ
nardataḥ sāgarasya iva śabdaḥ divam iva aspṛśat
19. teṣām sahasraśaḥ teṣu śibireṣu niviśatām
nardataḥ sāgarasya iva śabdaḥ divam iva aspṛśat
19. The sound of those thousands entering their camps, like the roar of the ocean, touched the sky.
तेषामभ्यागतानां स राजा राजीवलोचनः ।
व्यादिदेशान्नपानानि शय्याश्चाप्यतिमानुषाः ॥२०॥
20. teṣāmabhyāgatānāṁ sa rājā rājīvalocanaḥ ,
vyādideśānnapānāni śayyāścāpyatimānuṣāḥ.
20. teṣām abhyāgatānām sa rājā rājīvalocanaḥ
vyādideśa annapānāni śayyāḥ ca api atimānuṣāḥ
20. sa rājīvalocanaḥ rājā abhyāgatānām teṣām
annapānāni atimānuṣāḥ śayyāḥ ca api vyādideśa
20. That lotus-eyed king provided food and drink, and also extraordinary beds, for those who had arrived.
वाहनानां च विविधाः शालाः शालीक्षुगोरसैः ।
उपेताः पुरुषव्याघ्र व्यादिदेश स धर्मराट् ॥२१॥
21. vāhanānāṁ ca vividhāḥ śālāḥ śālīkṣugorasaiḥ ,
upetāḥ puruṣavyāghra vyādideśa sa dharmarāṭ.
21. vāhanānām ca vividhāḥ śālāḥ śālīkṣugorasaiḥ
upetāḥ puruṣavyāghra vyādideśa sa dharmarāṭ
21. puruṣavyāghra sa dharmarāṭ vāhanānām ca
śālīkṣugorasaiḥ upetāḥ vividhāḥ śālāḥ vyādideśa
21. And that king, the upholder of (dharma), O tiger among men, provided various stables for the conveyances, stocked with rice, sugarcane, and dairy products.
तथा तस्मिन्महायज्ञे धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ।
समाजग्मुर्मुनिगणा बहवो ब्रह्मवादिनः ॥२२॥
22. tathā tasminmahāyajñe dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ ,
samājagmurmunigaṇā bahavo brahmavādinaḥ.
22. tathā tasmin mahāyajñe dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
samājagmuḥ munigaṇāḥ bahavaḥ brahmavādinaḥ
22. tathā dhīmataḥ dharmarājasya tasmin mahāyajñe
bahavaḥ brahmavādinaḥ munigaṇāḥ samājagmuḥ
22. Thus, many groups of sages (muni), expounders of (brahman), gathered at that great Vedic ritual (yajña) of the wise king of (dharma).
ये च द्विजातिप्रवरास्तत्रासन्पृथिवीपते ।
समाजग्मुः सशिष्यांस्तान्प्रतिजग्राह कौरवः ॥२३॥
23. ye ca dvijātipravarāstatrāsanpṛthivīpate ,
samājagmuḥ saśiṣyāṁstānpratijagrāha kauravaḥ.
23. ye ca dvijātipravarāḥ tatra āsan pṛthivīpate
samājagmuḥ saśiṣyān tān pratijagrāha kauravaḥ
23. pṛthivīpate tatra ye ca dvijātipravarāḥ āsan
saśiṣyān samājagmuḥ kauravaḥ tān pratijagrāha
23. O lord of the earth, the foremost among the twice-born (dvija), who were present there, arrived with their disciples, and the Kuru (Yudhishthira) welcomed them.
सर्वांश्च ताननुययौ यावदावसथादिति ।
स्वयमेव महातेजा दम्भं त्यक्त्वा युधिष्ठिरः ॥२४॥
24. sarvāṁśca tānanuyayau yāvadāvasathāditi ,
svayameva mahātejā dambhaṁ tyaktvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
24. sarvān ca tān anuyayau yāvat āvasathāt iti svayam
eva mahātejāḥ dambham tyaktvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
24. ca mahātejāḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ svayam eva dambham
tyaktvā sarvān tān yāvat āvasathāt iti anuyayau
24. And the greatly energetic Yudhishthira himself, having abandoned hypocrisy, followed all of them even to their residences.
ततः कृत्वा स्थपतयः शिल्पिनोऽन्ये च ये तदा ।
कृत्स्नं यज्ञविधिं राजन्धर्मराज्ञे न्यवेदयन् ॥२५॥
25. tataḥ kṛtvā sthapatayaḥ śilpino'nye ca ye tadā ,
kṛtsnaṁ yajñavidhiṁ rājandharmarājñe nyavedayan.
25. tataḥ kṛtvā sthapatayaḥ śilpinaḥ anye ca ye tadā
kṛtsnam yajñavidhim rājan dharmarājñe nyavedayan
25. rājan tataḥ sthapatayaḥ śilpinaḥ anye ca ye tadā
kṛtsnam yajñavidhim kṛtvā dharmarājñe nyavedayan
25. O king, then the master builders and other artisans, and all those who were present at that time, after completing the entire procedure of the Vedic ritual (yajña), reported it to Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira).
तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्मराजः स कृतं सर्वमनिन्दितम् ।
हृष्टरूपोऽभवद्राजा सह भ्रातृभिरच्युतः ॥२६॥
26. tacchrutvā dharmarājaḥ sa kṛtaṁ sarvamaninditam ,
hṛṣṭarūpo'bhavadrājā saha bhrātṛbhiracyutaḥ.
26. tat śrutvā dharmarājaḥ saḥ kṛtam sarvam aninditam
hṛṣṭarūpaḥ abhavat rājā saha bhrātṛbhiḥ acyutaḥ
26. dharmarājaḥ saḥ rājā acyutaḥ tat sarvam kṛtam
aninditam śrutvā saha bhrātṛbhiḥ hṛṣṭarūpaḥ abhavat
26. When he heard that all the work had been flawlessly accomplished, Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira), that unswerving (acyuta) king, became joyful in appearance along with his brothers.
