हतं भीष्ममाधिरथिर्विदित्वा भिन्नां नावमिवात्यगाधे कुरूणाम् ।
सोदर्यवद्व्यसनात्सूतपुत्रः संतारयिष्यंस्तव पुत्रस्य सेनाम् ॥१॥

1. Sanjaya said: Adhiratha's son (Karna), upon learning that Bhishma was slain, [saw] the Kurus [in a state] like a broken boat in a boundless deep; the son of Sūta (Karna), like a brother, then intended to rescue your son's army from that distress.
श्रुत्वा तु कर्णः पुरुषेन्द्रमच्युतं निपातितं शांतनवं महारथम् ।
अथोपायात्तूर्णममित्रकर्शनो धनुर्धराणां प्रवरस्तदा वृषः ॥२॥
2. śrutvā tu karṇaḥ puruṣendramacyutaṁ; nipātitaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ mahāratham ,
athopāyāttūrṇamamitrakarśano; dhanurdharāṇāṁ pravarastadā vṛṣaḥ.

2. Hearing then that the chief among men, the unyielding son of Śāntanu (Bhishma), that great warrior, had been felled, Karna, the tormentor of enemies and the foremost of archers, quickly went forth then, that mighty one.
हते तु भीष्मे रथसत्तमे परैर्निमज्जतीं नावमिवार्णवे कुरून् ।
पितेव पुत्रांस्त्वरितोऽभ्ययात्ततः संतारयिष्यंस्तव पुत्रस्य सेनाम् ॥३॥
3. hate tu bhīṣme rathasattame parai;rnimajjatīṁ nāvamivārṇave kurūn ,
piteva putrāṁstvarito'bhyayāttataḥ; saṁtārayiṣyaṁstava putrasya senām.

3. Indeed, when Bhishma, the foremost among chariot warriors, was slain by the enemies, [Drona], wishing to rescue your son's army – the Kurus, who were like a boat sinking in the ocean – then quickly rushed forth like a father [rescuing] his sons.
कर्ण उवाच ।
यस्मिन्धृतिर्बुद्धिपराक्रमौजो दमः सत्यं वीरगुणाश्च सर्वे ।
अस्त्राणि दिव्यान्यथ संनतिर्ह्रीः प्रिया च वागनपायीनि भीष्मे ॥४॥
4. karṇa uvāca ,
yasmindhṛtirbuddhiparākramaujo; damaḥ satyaṁ vīraguṇāśca sarve ,
astrāṇi divyānyatha saṁnatirhrīḥ; priyā ca vāganapāyīni bhīṣme.

buddhi-parākramaujaḥ damaḥ satyam vīra-guṇāḥ ca
sarve | astrāṇi divyāni atha saṃnatiḥ

buddhi-parākramaujaḥ damaḥ satyam ca
sarve vīra-guṇāḥ divyāni astrāṇi atha
saṃnatiḥ hrīḥ ca priyā vāk anapāyīni
4. Karna said: In whom (Bhishma) were fortitude, intellect, valor, energy, self-control, truth, and all heroic qualities. Moreover, divine weapons, humility, modesty, and pleasing speech were never absent in Bhishma.
ब्रह्मद्विषघ्ने सततं कृतज्ञे सनातनं चन्द्रमसीव लक्ष्म ।
स चेत्प्रशान्तः परवीरहन्ता मन्ये हतानेव हि सर्वयोधान् ॥५॥
5. brahmadviṣaghne satataṁ kṛtajñe; sanātanaṁ candramasīva lakṣma ,
sa cetpraśāntaḥ paravīrahantā; manye hatāneva hi sarvayodhān.
5. brahma-dviṣa-ghne satatam kṛtajñe
sanātanam candramasi iva lakṣma
| saḥ cet praśāntaḥ para-vīra-hantā
manye hatān eva hi sarva-yodhān

cet saḥ praśāntaḥ para-vīra-hantā
manye hi sarva-yodhān eva hatān
5. In Bhishma, the constant slayer of those hostile to Brahmins and the ever-grateful, there was an eternal mark, like the spot on the moon. If that slayer of enemy heroes is now pacified (dead), then I indeed consider all our warriors as good as slain.
नेह ध्रुवं किंचन जातु विद्यते अस्मिँल्लोके कर्मणोऽनित्ययोगात् ।
सूर्योदये को हि विमुक्तसंशयो भावं कुर्वीताद्य महाव्रते हते ॥६॥
6. neha dhruvaṁ kiṁcana jātu vidyate; asmiँlloke karmaṇo'nityayogāt ,
sūryodaye ko hi vimuktasaṁśayo; bhāvaṁ kurvītādya mahāvrate hate.
6. na iha dhruvam kiṃcana jātu vidyate
asmin loke karmaṇaḥ anitya-yogāt |
sūryodaye kaḥ hi vimukta-saṃśayaḥ
bhāvam kurvīta adya mahā-vrate hate
6. iha asmin loke karmaṇaḥ anitya-yogāt
jātu kiṃcana dhruvam na vidyate
adya mahā-vrate hate kaḥ hi
vimukta-saṃśayaḥ sūryodaye bhāvam kurvīta
6. Indeed, nothing in this world is ever permanent, due to its connection with the impermanence of (karma) action. Today, with the one of great vow (mahāvrata) slain, who, free from doubt, could still expect a positive outcome, like one expects the rising of the sun?
वसुप्रभावे वसुवीर्यसंभवे गते वसूनेव वसुंधराधिपे ।
वसूनि पुत्रांश्च वसुंधरां तथा कुरूंश्च शोचध्वमिमां च वाहिनीम् ॥७॥
7. vasuprabhāve vasuvīryasaṁbhave; gate vasūneva vasuṁdharādhipe ,
vasūni putrāṁśca vasuṁdharāṁ tathā; kurūṁśca śocadhvamimāṁ ca vāhinīm.
7. vasuprabhāve vasuvīryasaṃbhave
gate vasūn eva vasuṃdharādhipe
vasūni putrān ca vasuṃdharām tathā
kurūn ca śocadhvam imām ca vāhinīm
7. vasuprabhāve vasuvīryasaṃbhave vasuṃdharādhipe vasūn eva gate (sati),
vasūni,

vasuṃdharām tathā,
kurūn ca,
imām vāhinīm ca śocadhvam.
7. When the one of Vasu-like splendor, born of the Vasus' might, the ruler of the earth, has departed, you all should lament for wealth, for your sons, for the earth, for the Kurus, and for this army.
संजय उवाच ।
महाप्रभावे वरदे निपातिते लोकश्रेष्ठे शांतनवे महौजसि ।
पराजितेषु भरतेषु दुर्मनाः कर्णो भृशं न्यश्वसदश्रु वर्तयन् ॥८॥
8. saṁjaya uvāca ,
mahāprabhāve varade nipātite; lokaśreṣṭhe śāṁtanave mahaujasi ,
parājiteṣu bharateṣu durmanāḥ; karṇo bhṛśaṁ nyaśvasadaśru vartayan.
8. sañjaya uvāca mahāprabhāve varade
nipātite lokaśreṣṭhe śāṃtanave mahaujasi
parājiteṣu bharateṣu durmanāḥ
karṇaḥ bhṛśam nyaśvasat aśru vartayan
8. sañjaya uvāca: mahāprabhāve,
varade,
lokaśreṣṭhe,
mahaujasi śāṃtanave nipātite (sati),
(ca) bharateṣu parājiteṣu (satsu),
durmanāḥ karṇaḥ aśru vartayan bhṛśam nyaśvasat.
8. Sanjaya said: When the son of Shantanu (śāṃtanava), the greatly powerful, the boon-giver, the foremost among people, and the immensely mighty one, had been felled, and the Bharatas were defeated, Karna, dejected, sighed deeply, shedding tears.
इदं तु राधेयवचो निशम्य ते सुताश्च राजंस्तव सैनिकाश्च ह ।
परस्परं चुक्रुशुरार्तिजं भृशं तदाश्रु नेत्रैर्मुमुचुर्हि शब्दवत् ॥९॥
9. idaṁ tu rādheyavaco niśamya te; sutāśca rājaṁstava sainikāśca ha ,
parasparaṁ cukruśurārtijaṁ bhṛśaṁ; tadāśru netrairmumucurhi śabdavat.
9. idam tu rādheyavacah niśamya te
sutāḥ ca rājan tava sainikāḥ ca ha
parasparam cukruśuḥ ārtijam bhṛśam
tadā aśru netraiḥ mumucuḥ hi śabdavat
9. rājan,
te tava sutāḥ ca sainikāḥ ca ha,
idam rādheyavacah tu niśamya,
tadā parasparam ārtijam bhṛśam cukruśuḥ.
hi netraiḥ śabdavat aśru mumucuḥ.
9. O king, having heard these words of Radheya (Karna), your sons and your soldiers then cried out to each other with great distress. Indeed, they shed tears loudly from their eyes.
प्रवर्तमाने तु पुनर्महाहवे विगाह्यमानासु चमूषु पार्थिवैः ।
अथाब्रवीद्धर्षकरं वचस्तदा रथर्षभान्सर्वमहारथर्षभः ॥१०॥
10. pravartamāne tu punarmahāhave; vigāhyamānāsu camūṣu pārthivaiḥ ,
athābravīddharṣakaraṁ vacastadā; ratharṣabhānsarvamahāratharṣabhaḥ.
10. pravartamāne tu punar mahāhave
vigāhyamānāsu camūṣu pārthivaiḥ atha
abravīt harṣakaram vacas tadā
ratharṣabhān sarvamahāratharṣabhaḥ
10. tu punar mahāhave pravartamāne (sati),
pārthivaiḥ camūṣu vigāhyamānāsu (satsu),
atha tadā sarvamahāratharṣabhaḥ ratharṣabhān harṣakaram vacas abravīt.
10. But then, while the great battle was again raging and the armies were being assailed by the kings (or warriors), the foremost of all great charioteers then spoke an encouraging word to the chief charioteers.
कर्ण उवाच ।
जगत्यनित्ये सततं प्रधावति प्रचिन्तयन्नस्थिरमद्य लक्षये ।
भवत्सु तिष्ठत्स्विह पातितो रणे गिरिप्रकाशः कुरुपुंगवः कथम् ॥११॥
11. karṇa uvāca ,
jagatyanitye satataṁ pradhāvati; pracintayannasthiramadya lakṣaye ,
bhavatsu tiṣṭhatsviha pātito raṇe; giriprakāśaḥ kurupuṁgavaḥ katham.
11. karṇa uvāca | jagati anitye satataṃ
pradhāvati pracintayan asthiram adya
lakṣaye | bhavatsu tiṣṭhatsu iha pātitaḥ
raṇe giriprakāśaḥ kurupuṅgavaḥ katham
11. karṇa uvāca adya aham anitye satataṃ
pradhāvati asthiram jagati pracintayan
lakṣaye bhavatsu iha tiṣṭhatsu raṇe
giriprakāśaḥ kurupuṅgavaḥ katham pātitaḥ?
11. Karṇa said: Pondering this world, which is impermanent (anitya) and constantly fleeting, I perceive its instability today. How is it that the foremost of the Kurus, magnificent like a mountain, has been struck down here in battle while all of you are still standing?
निपातिते शांतनवे महारथे दिवाकरे भूतलमास्थिते यथा ।
न पार्थिवाः सोढुमलं धनंजयं गिरिप्रवोढारमिवानिलं द्रुमाः ॥१२॥
12. nipātite śāṁtanave mahārathe; divākare bhūtalamāsthite yathā ,
na pārthivāḥ soḍhumalaṁ dhanaṁjayaṁ; giripravoḍhāramivānilaṁ drumāḥ.
12. nipātite śāntanave mahārathe divākare
bhūtalam āsthite yathā | na
pārthivāḥ soḍhum alam dhanañjayam
giripravoḍhāram iva anilam drumāḥ
12. śāntanave mahārathe nipātite (sati),
divākare bhūtalam āsthite yathā,
(tathā) pārthivāḥ dhanañjayam soḍhum na alam (santi),
drumāḥ giripravoḍhāram anilam iva (na alam).
12. With the great charioteer, the son of Śantanu (Bhishma), having been struck down, it is as if the sun has settled upon the earth. (Now,) the kings are unable to withstand Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), just as trees are incapable of bearing a wind that uproots mountains.
हतप्रधानं त्विदमार्तरूपं परैर्हतोत्साहमनाथमद्य वै ।
मया कुरूणां परिपाल्यमाहवे बलं यथा तेन महात्मना तथा ॥१३॥
13. hatapradhānaṁ tvidamārtarūpaṁ; parairhatotsāhamanāthamadya vai ,
mayā kurūṇāṁ paripālyamāhave; balaṁ yathā tena mahātmanā tathā.
13. hatapradhānam tu idam ārtarūpam
paraiḥ hatotsāham anātham adya
vai | mayā kurūṇām paripālyam āhave
balam yathā tena mahātmanā tathā
13. tu adya idam hatapradhānam,
ārtarūpam,
paraiḥ hatotsāham,
anātham vai balam,
yathā tena mahātmanā (paripālyam āsīt),
tathā mayā āhave kurūṇām paripālyam.
13. But this army, with its chief slain, now appears distressed, indeed dispirited by the enemies and orphaned. It must be protected by me in battle for the Kurus, just as it was by that great soul (Bhishma).
समाहितं चात्मनि भारमीदृशं जगत्तथानित्यमिदं च लक्षये ।
निपातितं चाहवशौण्डमाहवे कथं नु कुर्यामहमाहवे भयम् ॥१४॥
14. samāhitaṁ cātmani bhāramīdṛśaṁ; jagattathānityamidaṁ ca lakṣaye ,
nipātitaṁ cāhavaśauṇḍamāhave; kathaṁ nu kuryāmahamāhave bhayam.
14. samāhitam ca ātmani bhāram īdṛśam
jagat tathā anityam idam ca lakṣaye
| nipātitam ca āhavaśauṇḍam āhave
katham nu kuryām aham āhave bhayam
14. ca ātmani īdṛśam bhāram samāhitam.
ca idam jagat tathā anityam lakṣaye.
ca āhave āhavaśauṇḍam nipātitam (sati),
aham āhave bhayam katham nu kuryām?
14. And such a great burden is now placed upon my own self (ātman). I also perceive this world as impermanent (anitya). With even a battle-expert (like Bhishma) struck down in battle, how indeed can I feel fear in battle?
अहं तु तान्कुरुवृषभानजिह्मगैः प्रवेरयन्यमसदनं रणे चरन् ।
यशः परं जगति विभाव्य वर्तिता परैर्हतो युधि शयिताथ वा पुनः ॥१५॥
15. ahaṁ tu tānkuruvṛṣabhānajihmagaiḥ; praverayanyamasadanaṁ raṇe caran ,
yaśaḥ paraṁ jagati vibhāvya vartitā; parairhato yudhi śayitātha vā punaḥ.
15. aham tu tān kuruvṛṣabhān ajihmagaiḥ
praverayan yamasadanam raṇe caran |
yaśaḥ param jagati vibhāvya vartitā
paraiḥ hataḥ yudhi śayitā atha vā punaḥ
15. aham tu ajihmagaiḥ tān kuruvṛṣabhān yamasadanam raṇe caran praverayan,
param yaśaḥ jagati vibhāvya vartitā atha vā paraiḥ hataḥ yudhi śayitā punaḥ
15. As for me, by sending those foremost Kuru warriors to the abode of Yama (yamasadanam) with straight-flying arrows, and acting in battle, I shall attain supreme glory (yaśaḥ param) in the world, whether I am slain by enemies in combat and lie there, or I live on.
युधिष्ठिरो धृतिमतिधर्मतत्त्ववान्वृकोदरो गजशततुल्यविक्रमः ।
तथार्जुनस्त्रिदशवरात्मजो यतो न तद्बलं सुजयमथामरैरपि ॥१६॥
16. yudhiṣṭhiro dhṛtimatidharmatattvavā;nvṛkodaro gajaśatatulyavikramaḥ ,
tathārjunastridaśavarātmajo yato; na tadbalaṁ sujayamathāmarairapi.
16. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dhṛtimatidharmatattvavān
vṛkodaraḥ gajaśatatulyavikramaḥ |
tathā arjunaḥ tridaśavara ātmajaḥ yataḥ
na tat balam sujayam atha amaraiḥ api
16. yataḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ dhṛtimatidharmatattvavān asti,
vṛkodaraḥ gajaśatatulyavikramaḥ asti,
tathā arjunaḥ tridaśavara ātmajaḥ asti,
tat balam amaraiḥ api sujayam na asti atha
16. Where Yudhishthira is endowed with fortitude, intelligence, and the true essence of (dharma); where Bhīma (Vṛkodara) possesses might equal to a hundred elephants; and where Arjuna, the son of the best of gods, is present; that force (balam) is not easily conquerable even by the immortals.
यमौ रणे यत्र यमोपमौ बले ससात्यकिर्यत्र च देवकीसुतः ।
न तद्बलं कापुरुषोऽभ्युपेयिवान्निवर्तते मृत्युमुखादिवासकृत् ॥१७॥
17. yamau raṇe yatra yamopamau bale; sasātyakiryatra ca devakīsutaḥ ,
na tadbalaṁ kāpuruṣo'bhyupeyivā;nnivartate mṛtyumukhādivāsakṛt.
17. yamau raṇe yatra yamopamau bale
sasātyakiḥ yatra ca devakīsutaḥ |
na tat balam kāpuruṣaḥ abhyupeyivān
nivartate mṛtyumukhāt iva asakṛt
17. yatra raṇe yamau bale yamopamau staḥ,
yatra ca devakīsutaḥ sasātyakiḥ asti,
tat balam abhyupeyivān kāpuruṣaḥ mṛtyumukhāt asakṛt iva na nivartate
17. Where the two twin brothers (Yamau) are in battle, equal to Yama (yamopamau) in might, and where Krishna (Devakīsuta) is present with Sātyaki; a cowardly person (kāpuruṣaḥ) who has approached that force (tat balam) does not return, just as one does not return repeatedly from the jaws of death.
तपोऽभ्युदीर्णं तपसैव गम्यते बलं बलेनापि तथा मनस्विभिः ।
मनश्च मे शत्रुनिवारणे ध्रुवं स्वरक्षणे चाचलवद्व्यवस्थितम् ॥१८॥
18. tapo'bhyudīrṇaṁ tapasaiva gamyate; balaṁ balenāpi tathā manasvibhiḥ ,
manaśca me śatrunivāraṇe dhruvaṁ; svarakṣaṇe cācalavadvyavasthitam.
18. tapaḥ abhyudīrṇam tapasā eva gamyate
balam balena api tathā manasvibhiḥ
| manaḥ ca me śatrunivāraṇe dhruvam
svarakṣaṇe ca acalavat vyavasthitam
18. abhyudīrṇam tapaḥ tapasā eva gamyate; tathā balam balena api gamyate,
manasvibhiḥ ca gamyate.
ca me manaḥ śatrunivāraṇe svarakṣaṇe ca acalavat dhruvam vyavasthitam
18. Greatly increased austerity (tapas) is attained only by austerity (tapas); similarly, strength (balam) is attained by strength, and also by the resolute-minded (manasvibhiḥ). And my mind (manaḥ) is firmly fixed, like an immovable mountain, both in repelling enemies and in self-protection.
एवं चैषां बुध्यमानः प्रभावं गत्वैवाहं ताञ्जयाम्यद्य सूत ।
मित्रद्रोहो मर्षणीयो न मेऽयं भग्ने सैन्ये यः सहायः स मित्रम् ॥१९॥
19. evaṁ caiṣāṁ budhyamānaḥ prabhāvaṁ; gatvaivāhaṁ tāñjayāmyadya sūta ,
mitradroho marṣaṇīyo na me'yaṁ; bhagne sainye yaḥ sahāyaḥ sa mitram.
19. evam ca eṣām budhyamānaḥ prabhāvam
gatvā eva aham tān jayāmi adya sūta
mitradrohaḥ marṣaṇīyaḥ na me ayam
bhagne sainye yaḥ sahāyaḥ saḥ mitram
19. sūta evam ca eṣām prabhāvam budhyamānaḥ
gatvā eva aham tān adya jayāmi
ayam mitradrohaḥ me na marṣaṇīyaḥ
yaḥ bhagne sainye sahāyaḥ saḥ mitram
19. And thus, O Suta, understanding their power, I will go and conquer them today. This betrayal of a friend is not to be tolerated by me; for he who is an ally in a broken army is truly a friend.
कर्तास्म्येतत्सत्पुरुषार्यकर्म त्यक्त्वा प्राणाननुयास्यामि भीष्मम् ।
सर्वान्संख्ये शत्रुसंघान्हनिष्ये हतस्तैर्वा वीरलोकं गमिष्ये ॥२०॥
20. kartāsmyetatsatpuruṣāryakarma; tyaktvā prāṇānanuyāsyāmi bhīṣmam ,
sarvānsaṁkhye śatrusaṁghānhaniṣye; hatastairvā vīralokaṁ gamiṣye.
20. kartā asmi etat satpuruṣāryakarma
tyaktvā prāṇān anuyāsyāmi bhīṣmam
sarvān saṅkhye śatrusaṅghān
haniṣye hataḥ taiḥ vā vīralokam gamiṣye
20. aham etat satpuruṣāryakarma kartā
asmi prāṇān tyaktvā bhīṣmam anuyāsyāmi
saṅkhye sarvān śatrusaṅghān haniṣye
vā taiḥ hataḥ vīralokam gamiṣye
20. I am the doer of this noble deed befitting a good person. Having given up my life, I will follow Bhishma. I will kill all hordes of enemies in battle, or, if killed by them, I will go to the world of heroes.
संप्राक्रुष्टे रुदितस्त्रीकुमारे पराभूते पौरुषे धार्तराष्ट्रे ।
मया कृत्यमिति जानामि सूत तस्माच्छत्रून्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य जेष्ये ॥२१॥
21. saṁprākruṣṭe ruditastrīkumāre; parābhūte pauruṣe dhārtarāṣṭre ,
mayā kṛtyamiti jānāmi sūta; tasmācchatrūndhārtarāṣṭrasya jeṣye.

mayā kṛtyam iti jānāmi sūta tasmāt
śatrūn dhārtarāṣṭrasya jeṣye
21. sūta ruditastrīkumāre samprākruṣṭe
ca dhārtarāṣṭre pauruṣe
parābhūte mayā kṛtyam iti jānāmi
tasmāt dhārtarāṣṭrasya śatrūn jeṣye
21. O Suta, when women and children are loudly crying, and the valor of Dhritarashtra's son is vanquished, I know that this is my duty (karma). Therefore, I will conquer the enemies of Dhritarashtra's son.
कुरून्रक्षन्पाण्डुपुत्राञ्जिघांसंस्त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्घोररूपे रणेऽस्मिन् ।
सर्वान्संख्ये शत्रुसंघान्निहत्य दास्याम्यहं धार्तराष्ट्राय राज्यम् ॥२२॥
22. kurūnrakṣanpāṇḍuputrāñjighāṁsaṁ;styaktvā prāṇānghorarūpe raṇe'smin ,
sarvānsaṁkhye śatrusaṁghānnihatya; dāsyāmyahaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāya rājyam.

22. Protecting the Kurus and desiring to kill the sons of Pandu, having abandoned my life in this dreadful battle, and having slain all hordes of enemies in the conflict, I will give the kingdom to Dhritarashtra's son.
निबध्यतां मे कवचं विचित्रं हैमं शुभ्रं मणिरत्नावभासि ।
शिरस्त्राणं चार्कसमानभासं धनुः शरांश्चापि विषाहिकल्पान् ॥२३॥
23. nibadhyatāṁ me kavacaṁ vicitraṁ; haimaṁ śubhraṁ maṇiratnāvabhāsi ,
śirastrāṇaṁ cārkasamānabhāsaṁ; dhanuḥ śarāṁścāpi viṣāhikalpān.

23. Let my wondrous, golden, radiant armor, shining with gems and jewels, be fastened. Also, (bring) the helmet, gleaming like the sun, and the bow and arrows, which are like venomous snakes.
उपासङ्गान्षोडश योजयन्तु धनूंषि दिव्यानि तथाहरन्तु ।
असींश्च शक्तीश्च गदाश्च गुर्वीः शङ्खं च जाम्बूनदचित्रभासम् ॥२४॥
24. upāsaṅgānṣoḍaśa yojayantu; dhanūṁṣi divyāni tathāharantu ,
asīṁśca śaktīśca gadāśca gurvīḥ; śaṅkhaṁ ca jāmbūnadacitrabhāsam.

24. Let them equip sixteen quivers. And similarly, let them bring divine bows, as well as swords, spears (śakti), and heavy maces. Also, (bring) a conch shell, splendid with varied golden luster.
एतां रौक्मीं नागकक्ष्यां च जैत्रीं जैत्रं च मे ध्वजमिन्दीवराभम् ।
श्लक्ष्णैर्वस्त्रैर्विप्रमृज्यानयस्व चित्रां मालां चात्र बद्ध्वा सजालाम् ॥२५॥
25. etāṁ raukmīṁ nāgakakṣyāṁ ca jaitrīṁ; jaitraṁ ca me dhvajamindīvarābham ,
ślakṣṇairvastrairvipramṛjyānayasva; citrāṁ mālāṁ cātra baddhvā sajālām.

25. Clean this golden and victorious elephant's girth and my victorious, lotus-hued banner thoroughly with soft cloths, and then bring them. Also, after tying a wondrous garland adorned with a net (of pearls/jewels) here (to the banner/chariot).
अश्वानग्र्यान्पाण्डुराभ्रप्रकाशान्पुष्टान्स्नातान्मन्त्रपूताभिरद्भिः ।
तप्तैर्भाण्डैः काञ्चनैरभ्युपेताञ्शीघ्राञ्शीघ्रं सूतपुत्रानयस्व ॥२६॥
26. aśvānagryānpāṇḍurābhraprakāśā;npuṣṭānsnātānmantrapūtābhiradbhiḥ ,
taptairbhāṇḍaiḥ kāñcanairabhyupetā;ñśīghrāñśīghraṁ sūtaputrānayasva.

puṣṭān snātān mantrapūtābhiḥ adbhiḥ
taptaiḥ bhāṇḍaiḥ kāñcanaiḥ abhyupetān

26. he sūtaputra,
śīghram agryān pāṇḍurābharaprakāśān puṣṭān snātān mantrapūtābhiḥ adbhiḥ taptaiḥ kāñcanaiḥ bhāṇḍaiḥ abhyupetān śīghrān aśvān ānayasva
26. O charioteer (sūtaputra), quickly bring the excellent, swift horses. They are to be shining like white clouds, well-fed, bathed with waters purified by mantras, and provided with heated golden vessels.
रथं चाग्र्यं हेमजालावनद्धं रत्नैश्चित्रं चन्द्रसूर्यप्रकाशैः ।
द्रव्यैर्युक्तं संप्रहारोपपन्नैर्वाहैर्युक्तं तूर्णमावर्तयस्व ॥२७॥
27. rathaṁ cāgryaṁ hemajālāvanaddhaṁ; ratnaiścitraṁ candrasūryaprakāśaiḥ ,
dravyairyuktaṁ saṁprahāropapannai;rvāhairyuktaṁ tūrṇamāvartayasva.
27. ratham ca agryam hemajāla-avanaddham
ratnaiḥ citram candrasūrya-prakāśaiḥ
dravyaiḥ yuktam samprāhāra-upapannaiḥ
vāhaiḥ yuktam tūrṇam āvartayasva
27. (You) tūrṇam (quickly) agryam (excellent) hemajāla-avanaddham (covered with a network of gold) ratnaiḥ (with gems) candrasūrya-prakāśaiḥ (shining like the moon and sun) citram (adorned) samprāhāra-upapannaiḥ (suitable for battle) dravyaiḥ (with materials) yuktam (equipped) vāhaiḥ (with steeds) yuktam (furnished) ratham (chariot) ca (and) āvartayasva (bring back).
27. Quickly bring back the excellent chariot, which is covered with a network of gold, adorned with gems shining like the moon and sun, and equipped with battle-ready materials and steeds.
चित्राणि चापानि च वेगवन्ति ज्याश्चोत्तमाः संहननोपपन्नाः ।
तूणांश्च पूर्णान्महतः शराणामासज्य गात्रावरणानि चैव ॥२८॥
28. citrāṇi cāpāni ca vegavanti; jyāścottamāḥ saṁhananopapannāḥ ,
tūṇāṁśca pūrṇānmahataḥ śarāṇā;māsajya gātrāvaraṇāni caiva.
28. citrāṇi cāpāni ca vegavanti jyāḥ
ca uttamāḥ saṃhanana-upapannāḥ

28. (You) citrāṇi (variegated) ca (and) vegavanti (powerful) cāpāni (bows),
uttamāḥ (excellent) ca (and) saṃhanana-upapannāḥ (durable) jyāḥ (bowstrings) [prepare].
Mahataḥ (mighty) śarāṇām (of arrows) pūrṇān (full) tūṇān (quivers) ca (and) gātra-āvaraṇāni (body armors) ca eva (and also) āsaṅjya (having fastened/donned) [prepare].
28. And prepare the variegated and powerful bows, the excellent and durable bowstrings, and having fastened quivers full of mighty arrows, also don the body armors.
प्रायात्रिकं चानयताशु सर्वं कन्याः पूर्णं वीरकांस्यं च हैमम् ।
आनीय मालामवबध्य चाङ्गे प्रवादयन्त्वाशु जयाय भेरीः ॥२९॥
29. prāyātrikaṁ cānayatāśu sarvaṁ; kanyāḥ pūrṇaṁ vīrakāṁsyaṁ ca haimam ,
ānīya mālāmavabadhya cāṅge; pravādayantvāśu jayāya bherīḥ.
29. prāyātrikam ca ānayata āśu sarvam
kanyāḥ pūrṇam vīrakāṃsyam ca
haimam ānīya mālām avabadhya ca
aṅge pravādayantu āśu jayāya bherīḥ
29. (You all) āśu (quickly) sarvam (all) prāyātrikam (travel provisions) ca (and) pūrṇam (full) vīrakāṃsyam (heroic bronze) ca (and) haimam (gold) ānayata (bring).
(And) ānīya (having brought) mālām (a garland) ca (and) aṅge (on the body) avabadhya (tied),
kanyāḥ (the maidens) āśu (quickly) jayāya (for victory) bherīḥ (war drums) pravādayantu (let them sound).
29. You all, quickly bring all travel provisions, and [bring] a full [quantity of] heroic bronze and gold. And having brought a garland and tied it on the body, let the maidens quickly sound the war drums for victory.
प्रयाहि सूताशु यतः किरीटी वृकोदरो धर्मसुतो यमौ च ।
तान्वा हनिष्यामि समेत्य संख्ये भीष्माय वैष्यामि हतो द्विषद्भिः ॥३०॥
30. prayāhi sūtāśu yataḥ kirīṭī; vṛkodaro dharmasuto yamau ca ,
tānvā haniṣyāmi sametya saṁkhye; bhīṣmāya vaiṣyāmi hato dviṣadbhiḥ.

30. Sūta (O charioteer),
āśu (quickly) yataḥ (where) kirīṭī (Arjuna),
vṛkodaraḥ (Bhīma),
dharma-sutaḥ (Yudhiṣṭhira) ca (and) yamau (Nakula and Sahadeva) [are],
prayāhi (go).
Saṃkhye (in battle) sametya (having met) tān (them) vā (either) haniṣyāmi (I will kill),
vā (or) dviṣadbhiḥ (by enemies) hataḥ (killed) bhīṣmāya (to Bhīṣma) vaiṣyāmi (I will go).
30. O charioteer, quickly go to where Kirīṭī (Arjuna), Vṛkodara (Bhīma), the son of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira), and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) are. Either I will kill them, having met them in battle, or, having been killed by my enemies, I will go to Bhīṣma.
यस्मिन्राजा सत्यधृतिर्युधिष्ठिरः समास्थितो भीमसेनार्जुनौ च ।
वासुदेवः सात्यकिः सृञ्जयाश्च मन्ये बलं तदजय्यं महीपैः ॥३१॥
31. yasminrājā satyadhṛtiryudhiṣṭhiraḥ; samāsthito bhīmasenārjunau ca ,
vāsudevaḥ sātyakiḥ sṛñjayāśca; manye balaṁ tadajayyaṁ mahīpaiḥ.
31. yasmin rājā satyadhṛtiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
samāsthitaḥ bhīmasena-arjunau
ca vāsudevaḥ sātyakiḥ sṛñjayāḥ ca
manye balam tat ajayyam mahīpaiḥ
31. yasmin rājā satyadhṛtiḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ bhīmasena-arjunau ca vāsudevaḥ sātyakiḥ sṛñjayāḥ ca samāsthitaḥ,
tat balam mahīpaiḥ ajayyam (iti) manye.
31. Where King Yudhiṣṭhira, whose resolve is truth (dharma), stands firm, accompanied by Bhīmasena, Arjuna, Vāsudeva, Sātyaki, and the Sṛñjayas – I consider that force unconquerable by any kings.
तं चेन्मृत्युः सर्वहरोऽभिरक्षेत्सदाप्रमत्तः समरे किरीटिनम् ।
तथापि हन्तास्मि समेत्य संख्ये यास्यामि वा भीष्मपथा यमाय ॥३२॥
32. taṁ cenmṛtyuḥ sarvaharo'bhirakṣe;tsadāpramattaḥ samare kirīṭinam ,
tathāpi hantāsmi sametya saṁkhye; yāsyāmi vā bhīṣmapathā yamāya.
32. tam cet mṛtyuḥ sarvaharah abhirakṣet
sadā-apramattaḥ samare kirīṭinam
tathāpi hantā asmi sametya
saṅkhye yāsyāmi vā bhīṣmapathāt yamāya
32. cet sarvaharaḥ mṛtyuḥ sadā-apramattaḥ kirīṭinam samare tam abhirakṣet,
tathā api (aham) saṅkhye sametya hantā asmi; vā bhīṣmapathāt yamāya yāsyāmi.
32. Even if all-destroying Death (mṛtyu) were to protect Arjuna (kirīṭinam), who is ever vigilant in battle, still I would slay him upon encountering him in combat. Otherwise, I myself shall go to Yama by the path of Bhīṣma.
न त्वेवाहं न गमिष्यामि तेषां मध्ये शूराणां तत्तथाहं ब्रवीमि ।
मित्रद्रुहो दुर्बलभक्तयो ये पापात्मानो न ममैते सहायाः ॥३३॥
33. na tvevāhaṁ na gamiṣyāmi teṣāṁ; madhye śūrāṇāṁ tattathāhaṁ bravīmi ,
mitradruho durbalabhaktayo ye; pāpātmāno na mamaite sahāyāḥ.
33. na tu eva aham na gamiṣyāmi teṣām
madhye śūrāṇām tat tathā aham
bravīmi mitradruhaḥ durbalabhaktayaḥ
ye pāpātmānaḥ na mama ete sahāyāḥ
33. tu eva aham teṣām śūrāṇām madhye na gamiṣyāmi; tat tathā aham bravīmi.
ye mitradruhaḥ durbalabhaktayaḥ pāpātmānaḥ (santi),
ete mama sahāyāḥ na (santi).
33. However, I shall certainly not go (to fight) amongst those valiant warriors (the Pāṇḍavas). This I declare. Those who betray their friends, whose loyalty (bhakti) is weak, and who are evil-souled (pāpātmān), these are not my allies.
संजय उवाच ।
स सिद्धिमन्तं रथमुत्तमं दृढं सकूबरं हेमपरिष्कृतं शुभम् ।
पताकिनं वातजवैर्हयोत्तमैर्युक्तं समास्थाय ययौ जयाय ॥३४॥
34. saṁjaya uvāca ,
sa siddhimantaṁ rathamuttamaṁ dṛḍhaṁ; sakūbaraṁ hemapariṣkṛtaṁ śubham ,
patākinaṁ vātajavairhayottamai;ryuktaṁ samāsthāya yayau jayāya.
34. sañjayaḥ uvāca saḥ siddhimantam ratham
uttamam dṛḍham sa-kūbaram hema-pariṣkṛtam
śubham patākinam vāta-javaiḥ
haya-uttamaiḥ yuktam samāsthāya yayau jayāya

saḥ siddhimantam uttamam dṛḍham sa-kūbaram hema-pariṣkṛtam śubham patākinam vāta-javaiḥ haya-uttamaiḥ yuktam ratham samāsthāya jayāya yayau.
34. Sañjaya said: He (Duśśāsana), having ascended his excellent, sturdy, and splendid chariot – which was equipped with a pole, adorned with gold, and bore banners, and was yoked with the finest, wind-swift horses – proceeded for victory.
संपूज्यमानः कुरुभिर्महात्मा रथर्षभः पाण्डुरवाजियाता ।
ययौ तदायोधनमुग्रधन्वा यत्रावसानं भरतर्षभस्य ॥३५॥
35. saṁpūjyamānaḥ kurubhirmahātmā; ratharṣabhaḥ pāṇḍuravājiyātā ,
yayau tadāyodhanamugradhanvā; yatrāvasānaṁ bharatarṣabhasya.
35. sampūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ mahātmā
ratharṣabhaḥ pāṇḍuravājiyātā
yayau tadāyodhanam ugradhanvā
yatra avasānam bharatarṣabhasya

avasānam (āsan) tadāyodhanam yayau
35. The great-souled one (mahātmā), the best among charioteers, whose horses were white, honored by the Kurus, went to that battlefield, bearing a formidable bow, where the cessation of the best of Bharatas (Bhīṣma) was taking place.
वरूथिना महता सध्वजेन सुवर्णमुक्तामणिवज्रशालिना ।
सदश्वयुक्तेन रथेन कर्णो मेघस्वनेनार्क इवामितौजाः ॥३६॥
36. varūthinā mahatā sadhvajena; suvarṇamuktāmaṇivajraśālinā ,
sadaśvayuktena rathena karṇo; meghasvanenārka ivāmitaujāḥ.

36. Karṇa, possessing immeasurable energy, resembling the sun, with a thundering sound like a cloud, was (in battle) in a great, splendid chariot, equipped with a banner, adorned with gold, pearls, gems, and diamonds, and yoked with excellent horses.
हुताशनाभः स हुताशनप्रभे शुभः शुभे वै स्वरथे धनुर्धरः ।
स्थितो रराजाधिरथिर्महारथः स्वयं विमाने सुरराडिव स्थितः ॥३७॥
37. hutāśanābhaḥ sa hutāśanaprabhe; śubhaḥ śubhe vai svarathe dhanurdharaḥ ,
sthito rarājādhirathirmahārathaḥ; svayaṁ vimāne surarāḍiva sthitaḥ.
37. hutāśanābhaḥ saḥ hutāśanaprabhe śubhaḥ
śubhe vai svarathe dhanurdharaḥ
sthitaḥ rarāja adhirathiḥ mahārathaḥ

rarāja.
37. That archer (dhanurdharaḥ), the son of Adhiratha (Adhirathi), the great charioteer (mahārathaḥ), stood on his own splendid chariot, which glowed like fire, and shone like the very lord of the gods situated in his celestial vehicle.
