वैशंपायन उवाच ।
स तु वाजी समुद्रान्तां पर्येत्य पृथिवीमिमाम् ।
निवृत्तोऽभिमुखो राजन्येन नागाह्वयं पुरम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
sa tu vājī samudrāntāṁ paryetya pṛthivīmimām ,

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'O king, that very horse, having traversed this ocean-bound earth, returned, facing towards the city called Nāga (Hastinapura).'
अनुगच्छंश्च तेजस्वी निवृत्तोऽथ किरीटभृत् ।
यदृच्छया समापेदे पुरं राजगृहं तदा ॥२॥
2. anugacchaṁśca tejasvī nivṛtto'tha kirīṭabhṛt ,
yadṛcchayā samāpede puraṁ rājagṛhaṁ tadā.

2. And then, the glorious diadem-wearer (Arjuna), who was following (the horse), returned; and at that time, by chance, he reached the city of Rājagṛha.
तमभ्याशगतं राजा जरासंधात्मजात्मजः ।
क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितो वीरः समरायाजुहाव ह ॥३॥
3. tamabhyāśagataṁ rājā jarāsaṁdhātmajātmajaḥ ,
kṣatradharme sthito vīraḥ samarāyājuhāva ha.

3. The king, the valiant grandson of Jarāsandha, upholding the constitution (dharma) of a warrior, challenged him who had approached, to battle.
ततः पुरात्स निष्क्रम्य रथी धन्वी शरी तली ।
मेघसंधिः पदातिं तं धनंजयमुपाद्रवत् ॥४॥
4. tataḥ purātsa niṣkramya rathī dhanvī śarī talī ,
meghasaṁdhiḥ padātiṁ taṁ dhanaṁjayamupādravat.

meghasandhiḥ padātim tam dhanañjayam upādravat

4. Then, Meghasandhi, equipped with a chariot, bow, arrows, and quiver, came out from the city and rushed towards Dhananjaya (Arjuna), who was on foot.
आसाद्य च महातेजा मेघसंधिर्धनंजयम् ।
बालभावान्महाराज प्रोवाचेदं न कौशलात् ॥५॥
5. āsādya ca mahātejā meghasaṁdhirdhanaṁjayam ,
bālabhāvānmahārāja provācedaṁ na kauśalāt.

5. And having approached Dhananjaya (Arjuna), the mighty Meghasandhi, O great king, spoke these words out of youthful impulsiveness, not from any cunning (kauśala).
किमयं चार्यते वाजी स्त्रीमध्य इव भारत ।
हयमेनं हरिष्यामि प्रयतस्व विमोक्षणे ॥६॥
6. kimayaṁ cāryate vājī strīmadhya iva bhārata ,
hayamenaṁ hariṣyāmi prayatasva vimokṣaṇe.

hayam enam hariṣyāmi prayatasva vimokṣaṇe

6. O Bhārata, why is this horse being protected as if it were among women? I shall seize this horse, so strive to liberate it.
अदत्तानुनयो युद्धे यदि त्वं पितृभिर्मम ।
करिष्यामि तवातिथ्यं प्रहर प्रहरामि वा ॥७॥
7. adattānunayo yuddhe yadi tvaṁ pitṛbhirmama ,
kariṣyāmi tavātithyaṁ prahara praharāmi vā.
7. adattānunayaḥ yuddhe yadi tvam pitṛbhiḥ mama
kariṣyāmi tava ātithyam prahara praharāmi vā
7. yadi tvam mama pitṛbhiḥ adattānunayaḥ yuddhe (asi),
tava ātithyam kariṣyāmi.
(tvam) prahara vā (aham) praharāmi.
7. If you engage in battle without the consent of my elders, I will offer you hospitality (by fighting you). You strike first, or I will.
इत्युक्तः प्रत्युवाचैनं पाण्डवः प्रहसन्निव ।
विघ्नकर्ता मया वार्य इति मे व्रतमाहितम् ॥८॥
8. ityuktaḥ pratyuvācainaṁ pāṇḍavaḥ prahasanniva ,
vighnakartā mayā vārya iti me vratamāhitam.
8. iti uktaḥ prati uvāca enam pāṇḍavaḥ prahasan
iva vighnakartā mayā vāryaḥ iti me vratam āhitam

8. Thus addressed, the Pāṇḍava (Bhima) replied to him, as if smiling, "One who creates obstacles must be restrained by me; this is my established vow."
भ्रात्रा ज्येष्ठेन नृपते तवापि विदितं ध्रुवम् ।
प्रहरस्व यथाशक्ति न मन्युर्विद्यते मम ॥९॥
9. bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena nṛpate tavāpi viditaṁ dhruvam ,
praharasva yathāśakti na manyurvidyate mama.
9. bhrātrā jyeṣṭhena nṛpate tava api viditam dhruvam
praharasva yathāśakti na manyuḥ vidyate mama
9. nṛpate,
mama jyeṣṭhena bhrātrā (ca) tava api (etat) dhruvam viditam.

9. O King, this (vow) is certainly known to you also through my elder brother. Strike with all your might; I bear no resentment.
इत्युक्तः प्राहरत्पूर्वं पाण्डवं मगधेश्वरः ।
किरञ्शरसहस्राणि वर्षाणीव सहस्रदृक् ॥१०॥
10. ityuktaḥ prāharatpūrvaṁ pāṇḍavaṁ magadheśvaraḥ ,
kirañśarasahasrāṇi varṣāṇīva sahasradṛk.
10. iti uktaḥ prāharat pūrvam pāṇḍavam magadheśvaraḥ
kiran śarasahasrāṇi varṣāṇi iva sahasradṛk
10. iti uktaḥ magadheśvaraḥ pūrvam pāṇḍavam prāharat,
kiran śarasahasrāṇi sahasradṛk iva varṣāṇi.
10. Thus addressed, the king of Magadha (Jarāsandha) struck the Pāṇḍava (Bhima) first, showering thousands of arrows, just as the thousand-eyed (Indra) sends down torrents of rain.
ततो गाण्डीवभृच्छूरो गाण्डीवप्रेषितैः शरैः ।
चकार मोघांस्तान्बाणानयत्नाद्भरतर्षभ ॥११॥
11. tato gāṇḍīvabhṛcchūro gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
cakāra moghāṁstānbāṇānayatnādbharatarṣabha.
11. tataḥ gāṇḍīvabhṛt śūraḥ gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ
cakāra moghān tān bāṇān ayatnāt bharatarṣabha
11. tataḥ bharatarṣabha gāṇḍīvabhṛt śūraḥ gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ
śaraiḥ ayatnāt tān bāṇān moghān cakāra
11. Then, O best of the Bhāratas, the heroic wielder of the Gaṇḍīva (Arjuna) effortlessly nullified those arrows with his own arrows discharged from the Gaṇḍīva bow.
स मोघं तस्य बाणौघं कृत्वा वानरकेतनः ।
शरान्मुमोच ज्वलितान्दीप्तास्यानिव पन्नगान् ॥१२॥
12. sa moghaṁ tasya bāṇaughaṁ kṛtvā vānaraketanaḥ ,
śarānmumoca jvalitāndīptāsyāniva pannagān.
12. saḥ mogham tasya bāṇaugham kṛtvā vānaraketanaḥ
śarān mumoca jvalitān dīptāsyān iva pannagān
12. vānaraketanaḥ saḥ tasya bāṇaugham mogham kṛtvā

12. Having rendered his opponent's volley of arrows futile, he, whose banner bore the monkey emblem (Arjuna), then released flaming arrows, like serpents with blazing mouths.
ध्वजे पताकादण्डेषु रथयन्त्रे हयेषु च ।
अन्येषु च रथाङ्गेषु न शरीरे न सारथौ ॥१३॥
13. dhvaje patākādaṇḍeṣu rathayantre hayeṣu ca ,
anyeṣu ca rathāṅgeṣu na śarīre na sārathau.

anyeṣu ca rathāṅgeṣu na śarīre na sārathau

13. He directed his arrows to the banner, the flagstaffs, the chariot's mechanisms, the horses, and other components of the chariot, but not to the body (of the opponent) nor to the charioteer.
संरक्ष्यमाणः पार्थेन शरीरे फल्गुनस्य ह ।
मन्यमानः स्ववीर्यं तन्मागधः प्राहिणोच्छरान् ॥१४॥
14. saṁrakṣyamāṇaḥ pārthena śarīre phalgunasya ha ,
manyamānaḥ svavīryaṁ tanmāgadhaḥ prāhiṇoccharān.
14. saṃrakṣyamāṇaḥ pārthena śarīre phālgunasya ha
manyamānaḥ svavīryam tat māgadhaḥ prāhiṇot śarān
14. māgadhaḥ pārthena phālgunasya ha śarīre saṃrakṣyamāṇaḥ
tat svavīryam manyamānaḥ śarān prāhiṇot
14. Although his (Magadha's) body was being protected by Pārtha (Arjuna) – by Phālguna himself, indeed – the Magadha king, considering his own prowess, (still) dispatched arrows.
ततो गाण्डीवभृच्छूरो मागधेन समाहतः ।
बभौ वासन्तिक इव पलाशः पुष्पितो महान् ॥१५॥
15. tato gāṇḍīvabhṛcchūro māgadhena samāhataḥ ,
babhau vāsantika iva palāśaḥ puṣpito mahān.
15. tataḥ gāṇḍīvabhṛt śūraḥ māgadhena samāhataḥ
babhau vāsantikaḥ iva palāśaḥ puṣpitaḥ mahān
15. Then the brave bearer of the Gaṇḍīva (Arjuna), struck by Jarasandha, shone like a magnificent palāśa tree in full bloom in spring.
अवध्यमानः सोऽभ्यघ्नन्मागधः पाण्डवर्षभम् ।
तेन तस्थौ स कौरव्य लोकवीरस्य दर्शने ॥१६॥
16. avadhyamānaḥ so'bhyaghnanmāgadhaḥ pāṇḍavarṣabham ,
tena tasthau sa kauravya lokavīrasya darśane.
16. avadhyamānaḥ saḥ abhyaghnan māgadhaḥ pāṇḍavarṣabham
tena tasthau saḥ kauravya lokavīrasya darśane
16. Though incapable of being slain, that Magadha (Jarasandha) struck the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas (Arjuna). O scion of Kuru, he (Jarasandha) stood firm in the presence of the world-hero (Arjuna).
सव्यसाची तु संक्रुद्धो विकृष्य बलवद्धनुः ।
हयांश्चकार निर्देहान्सारथेश्च शिरोऽहरत् ॥१७॥
17. savyasācī tu saṁkruddho vikṛṣya balavaddhanuḥ ,
hayāṁścakāra nirdehānsāratheśca śiro'harat.
17. savyasācī tu saṃkruddhaḥ vikṛṣya balavat dhanuḥ
hayān ca-akāra nirdehān sāratheḥ ca śiraḥ aharat
17. But Arjuna (Savyasācin), greatly enraged, having drawn his powerful bow, incinerated the horses and cut off the charioteer's head.
धनुश्चास्य महच्चित्रं क्षुरेण प्रचकर्त ह ।
हस्तावापं पताकां च ध्वजं चास्य न्यपातयत् ॥१८॥
18. dhanuścāsya mahaccitraṁ kṣureṇa pracakarta ha ,
hastāvāpaṁ patākāṁ ca dhvajaṁ cāsya nyapātayat.
18. dhanuḥ ca asya mahat citram kṣureṇa pra-cakarta ha
hastāvāpam patākām ca dhvajam ca asya nyapātayat
18. And he severed his great, splendid bow with a razor-arrow. He also threw down his hand-guard, banner, and standard.
स राजा व्यथितो व्यश्वो विधनुर्हतसारथिः ।
गदामादाय कौन्तेयमभिदुद्राव वेगवान् ॥१९॥
19. sa rājā vyathito vyaśvo vidhanurhatasārathiḥ ,
gadāmādāya kaunteyamabhidudrāva vegavān.
19. saḥ rājā vyathitaḥ vyaśvaḥ vidhanuḥ hata-sārathiḥ
gadām ādāya kaunteyam abhidudrāva vegavān
19. saḥ vyathitaḥ vyaśvaḥ vidhanuḥ hata-sārathiḥ
vegavān rājā gadām ādāya kaunteyam abhidudrāva
19. That king, distressed, horseless, without a bow, and with his charioteer killed, swiftly took up a mace and rushed towards the son of Kunti (Arjuna).
तस्यापतत एवाशु गदां हेमपरिष्कृताम् ।
शरैश्चकर्त बहुधा बहुभिर्गृध्रवाजितैः ॥२०॥
20. tasyāpatata evāśu gadāṁ hemapariṣkṛtām ,
śaraiścakarta bahudhā bahubhirgṛdhravājitaiḥ.
20. tasya āpatataḥ eva āśu gadām hema-pariṣkṛtām
śaraiḥ ca akarta bahudhā bahubhiḥ gṛdhra-vājitaiḥ
20. tasya āpatataḥ eva āśu hema-pariṣkṛtām gadām
bahubhiḥ gṛdhra-vājitaiḥ śaraiḥ ca bahudhā akarta
20. As he was rushing forward, (Arjuna) immediately cut that mace, which was adorned with gold, into many pieces with numerous arrows furnished with vulture feathers.
सा गदा शकलीभूता विशीर्णमणिबन्धना ।
व्याली निर्मुच्यमानेव पपातास्य सहस्रधा ॥२१॥
21. sā gadā śakalībhūtā viśīrṇamaṇibandhanā ,
vyālī nirmucyamāneva papātāsya sahasradhā.
21. sā gadā śakalī-bhūtā viśīrṇa-maṇi-bandhanā
vyālī nirmucyamānā iva papāta asya sahasradhā
21. sā śakalī-bhūtā viśīrṇa-maṇi-bandhanā gadā
nirmucyamānā vyālī iva asya sahasradhā papāta
21. That mace, broken into pieces with its jeweled bindings shattered, fell from his grasp into a thousand fragments, like a serpent shedding its skin.
विरथं तं विधन्वानं गदया परिवर्जितम् ।
नैच्छत्ताडयितुं धीमानर्जुनः समराग्रणीः ॥२२॥
22. virathaṁ taṁ vidhanvānaṁ gadayā parivarjitam ,
naicchattāḍayituṁ dhīmānarjunaḥ samarāgraṇīḥ.
22. viratham tam vidhanvānam gadayā parivarjitam na
aicchat tāḍayitum dhīmān arjunaḥ samara-agraṇīḥ
22. dhīmān samara-agraṇīḥ arjunaḥ viratham vidhanvānam
gadayā parivarjitam tam tāḍayitum na aicchat
22. Arjuna, the wise and foremost leader in battle, did not wish to strike that king who was chariotiess, bowless, and deprived of his mace.
तत एनं विमनसं क्षत्रधर्मे समास्थितम् ।
सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कपिकेतनः ॥२३॥
23. tata enaṁ vimanasaṁ kṣatradharme samāsthitam ,
sāntvapūrvamidaṁ vākyamabravītkapiketanaḥ.
23. tataḥ enam vimanasaṁ kṣatradharme samāsthitam
sāntvapurvam idam vākyam abravīt kapiketanaḥ
23. tataḥ kapiketanaḥ enam vimanasaṁ kṣatradharme
samāsthitam idam sāntvapurvam vākyam abravīt
23. Then, Arjuna, whose banner bore a monkey (kapiketana), spoke these conciliatory words to him, who was disheartened yet firmly engaged in the warrior's code (kṣatradharma).
पर्याप्तः क्षत्रधर्मोऽयं दर्शितः पुत्र गम्यताम् ।
बह्वेतत्समरे कर्म तव बालस्य पार्थिव ॥२४॥
24. paryāptaḥ kṣatradharmo'yaṁ darśitaḥ putra gamyatām ,
bahvetatsamare karma tava bālasya pārthiva.
24. paryāptaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ ayam darśitaḥ putra gamyatām
bahu etat samare karma tava bālasya pārthiva
24. putra,
ayam darśitaḥ kṣatradharmaḥ paryāptaḥ,

24. O son, this warrior's code (kṣatradharma) you have displayed is sufficient; you may now depart. O king, this is a great feat (karma) in battle for you, a mere boy.
युधिष्ठिरस्य संदेशो न हन्तव्या नृपा इति ।
तेन जीवसि राजंस्त्वमपराद्धोऽपि मे रणे ॥२५॥
25. yudhiṣṭhirasya saṁdeśo na hantavyā nṛpā iti ,
tena jīvasi rājaṁstvamaparāddho'pi me raṇe.
25. yudhiṣṭhirasya sandeśaḥ na hantavyāḥ nṛpāḥ iti
tena jīvasi rājan tvam aparāddhaḥ api me raṇe
25. yudhiṣṭhirasya sandeśaḥ iti nṛpāḥ na hantavyāḥ.
tena tvam rājan me raṇe aparāddhaḥ api jīvasi
25. This is Yudhiṣṭhira's message (sandeśa): 'Kings are not to be slain.' Therefore, O king, you live, even though you have committed an offense against me in battle.
इति मत्वा स चात्मानं प्रत्यादिष्टं स्म मागधः ।
तथ्यमित्यवगम्यैनं प्राञ्जलिः प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥२६॥
26. iti matvā sa cātmānaṁ pratyādiṣṭaṁ sma māgadhaḥ ,
tathyamityavagamyainaṁ prāñjaliḥ pratyapūjayat.
26. iti matvā sa ca ātmānam pratyādiṣṭam sma māgadhaḥ
tathyām iti avagamya enam prāñjaliḥ pratyapūjayat
26. saḥ māgadhaḥ ca iti ātmānam pratyādiṣṭam sma matvā,
tathyām iti avagamya enam prāñjaliḥ pratyapūjayat
26. And having considered himself (ātman) as rejected, the Magadha king, understanding it to be true, honored him with joined hands.
तमर्जुनः समाश्वास्य पुनरेवेदमब्रवीत् ।
आगन्तव्यं परां चैत्रीमश्वमेधे नृपस्य नः ॥२७॥
27. tamarjunaḥ samāśvāsya punarevedamabravīt ,
āgantavyaṁ parāṁ caitrīmaśvamedhe nṛpasya naḥ.
27. tam arjunaḥ samāśvāsya punaḥ eva idam abravīt
āgantavyam parām caitrīm aśvamedhe nṛpasya naḥ
27. arjunaḥ tam samāśvāsya punaḥ eva idam abravīt
naḥ nṛpasya aśvamedhe parām caitrīm āgantavyam
27. Arjuna, having comforted him, then spoke this again: 'You must come to our king's aśvamedha (Vedic ritual) in the coming month of Caitra.'
इत्युक्तः स तथेत्युक्त्वा पूजयामास तं हयम् ।
फल्गुनं च युधां श्रेष्ठं विधिवत्सहदेवजः ॥२८॥
28. ityuktaḥ sa tathetyuktvā pūjayāmāsa taṁ hayam ,
phalgunaṁ ca yudhāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ vidhivatsahadevajaḥ.
28. iti uktaḥ sa tathā iti uktvā pūjayāmāsa tam hayam
phalgunaṃ ca yudhām śreṣṭham vidhivat sahadevajaḥ
28. sa sahadevajaḥ iti uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā tam hayam
phalgunaṃ ca yudhām śreṣṭham vidhivat pūjayāmāsa
28. Having been told this, he (Sahadevaja) said, 'So be it,' and then duly worshipped that horse and Phalguna (Arjuna), the foremost of warriors.
ततो यथेष्टमगमत्पुनरेव स केसरी ।
ततः समुद्रतीरेण वङ्गान्पुण्ड्रान्सकेरलान् ॥२९॥
29. tato yatheṣṭamagamatpunareva sa kesarī ,
tataḥ samudratīreṇa vaṅgānpuṇḍrānsakeralān.
29. tataḥ yatheṣṭam agamat punaḥ eva sa kesarī
tataḥ samudratīreṇa vaṅgān puṇḍrān sakeralān
29. tataḥ sa kesarī punaḥ eva yatheṣṭam agamat

29. Then, that horse (likened to a lion) again went wherever it pleased. After that, it proceeded along the seashore through the Vangas, Pundras, and including the Keralas.
तत्र तत्र च भूरीणि म्लेच्छसैन्यान्यनेकशः ।
विजिग्ये धनुषा राजन्गाण्डीवेन धनंजयः ॥३०॥
30. tatra tatra ca bhūrīṇi mlecchasainyānyanekaśaḥ ,
vijigye dhanuṣā rājangāṇḍīvena dhanaṁjayaḥ.
30. tatra tatra ca bhūrīṇi mlecchasainyāni anekaśaḥ
vijigye dhanuṣā rājan gāṇḍīvena dhanaṃjayaḥ
30. rājan tatra tatra anekaśaḥ bhūrīṇi mlecchasainyāni
ca dhanaṃjayaḥ gāṇḍīvena dhanuṣā vijigye
30. And there, in many places, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), O king, repeatedly conquered numerous barbarian armies with his Gāṇḍīva bow.
