ब्राह्मण उवाच ।
विवस्वतो गच्छति पर्ययेण वोढुं भवांस्तं रथमेकचक्रम् ।
आश्चर्यभूतं यदि तत्र किंचिद्दृष्टं त्वया शंसितुमर्हसि त्वम् ॥१॥
1. brāhmaṇa uvāca ,
vivasvato gacchati paryayeṇa; voḍhuṁ bhavāṁstaṁ rathamekacakram ,
āścaryabhūtaṁ yadi tatra kiṁci;ddṛṣṭaṁ tvayā śaṁsitumarhasi tvam.
1. brāhmaṇaḥ uvāca vivasvataḥ gacchati
paryayeṇa voḍhum bhavān tam ratham
ekacakram āścaryabhūtam yadi tatra
kiñcit dṛṣṭam tvayā śaṃsitum arhasi tvam
1. The Brahmin said, "You carry that one-wheeled chariot of Vivāsvan (the Sun god) during its rotation. If you have seen anything astonishing there, you should describe it."
नाग उवाच ।
यस्य रश्मिसहस्रेषु शाखास्विव विहंगमाः ।
वसन्त्याश्रित्य मुनयः संसिद्धा दैवतैः सह ॥२॥
2. nāga uvāca ,
yasya raśmisahasreṣu śākhāsviva vihaṁgamāḥ ,
vasantyāśritya munayaḥ saṁsiddhā daivataiḥ saha.
2. nāgaḥ uvāca yasya raśmisahasreṣu śākhāsu iva vihaṅgamāḥ
vasanti āśritya munayaḥ saṃsiddhāḥ daivataiḥ saha
2. The Naga said, "In whose thousands of rays, perfected sages (muni) dwell, taking refuge there, just like birds on branches, accompanied by the gods."
यतो वायुर्विनिःसृत्य सूर्यरश्म्याश्रितो महान् ।
विजृम्भत्यम्बरे विप्र किमाश्चर्यतरं ततः ॥३॥
3. yato vāyurviniḥsṛtya sūryaraśmyāśrito mahān ,
vijṛmbhatyambare vipra kimāścaryataraṁ tataḥ.
3. yataḥ vāyuḥ viniḥsṛtya sūryaraśmyāśritaḥ mahān
vijṛmbhati ambare vipra kim āścaryataram tataḥ
3. O Brahmin, what could be more astonishing than that mighty wind, which issues forth from him, relies on the sun's rays, and expands in the sky?
शुक्रो नामासितः पादो यस्य वारिधरोऽम्बरे ।
तोयं सृजति वर्षासु किमाश्चर्यमतः परम् ॥४॥
4. śukro nāmāsitaḥ pādo yasya vāridharo'mbare ,
toyaṁ sṛjati varṣāsu kimāścaryamataḥ param.
4. śukraḥ nāma asitaḥ pādaḥ yasya vāridharaḥ ambare
toyam sṛjati varṣāsu kim āścaryam ataḥ param
4. Whose dark ray, named Śukra, becomes a water-bearing cloud in the sky and releases water during the rainy seasons – what could be more astonishing than this?
योऽष्टमासांस्तु शुचिना किरणेनोज्झितं पयः ।
पर्यादत्ते पुनः काले किमाश्चर्यमतः परम् ॥५॥
5. yo'ṣṭamāsāṁstu śucinā kiraṇenojjhitaṁ payaḥ ,
paryādatte punaḥ kāle kimāścaryamataḥ param.
5. yaḥ aṣṭamāsān tu śucinā kiraṇena ujjhitam payaḥ
paryādatte punaḥ kāle kim āścaryam ataḥ param
5. What greater wonder is there than that which, for eight months, absorbs water that has been purified by its rays, and then gives it back again in due season?
यस्य तेजोविशेषेषु नित्यमात्मा प्रतिष्ठितः ।
यतो बीजं मही चेयं धार्यते सचराचरम् ॥६॥
6. yasya tejoviśeṣeṣu nityamātmā pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
yato bījaṁ mahī ceyaṁ dhāryate sacarācaram.
6. yasya tejaḥ viśeṣeṣu nityam ātmā pratiṣṭhitaḥ
yataḥ bījam mahī ca iyam dhāryate sacarācaram
6. In whose distinct manifestations of glory, the self (ātman) is eternally established; from whom the primordial seed (bījam) originates, and by whom this entire earth, with all its movable and immovable beings, is sustained.
यत्र देवो महाबाहुः शाश्वतः परमोऽक्षरः ।
अनादिनिधनो विप्र किमाश्चर्यमतः परम् ॥७॥
7. yatra devo mahābāhuḥ śāśvataḥ paramo'kṣaraḥ ,
anādinidhano vipra kimāścaryamataḥ param.
7. yatra devaḥ mahābāhuḥ śāśvataḥ paramaḥ akṣaraḥ
anādinidhanaḥ vipra kim āścaryam ataḥ param
7. Where the mighty-armed god is eternal, supreme, imperishable (akṣara), and without beginning or end, O brāhmaṇa, what greater wonder can there be than this?
आश्चर्याणामिवाश्चर्यमिदमेकं तु मे शृणु ।
विमले यन्मया दृष्टमम्बरे सूर्यसंश्रयात् ॥८॥
8. āścaryāṇāmivāścaryamidamekaṁ tu me śṛṇu ,
vimale yanmayā dṛṣṭamambare sūryasaṁśrayāt.
8. āścaryāṇām iva āścaryam idam ekam tu me śṛṇu
vimale yat mayā dṛṣṭam ambare sūryasaṃśrayāt
8. Listen to me concerning this one wonder, which is indeed a marvel among wonders, that I saw in the pure sky through the influence of the sun.
पुरा मध्याह्नसमये लोकांस्तपति भास्करे ।
प्रत्यादित्यप्रतीकाशः सर्वतः प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥९॥
9. purā madhyāhnasamaye lokāṁstapati bhāskare ,
pratyādityapratīkāśaḥ sarvataḥ pratyadṛśyata.
9. purā madhyāhna-samaye lokān tapati bhāskare |
praty-āditya-pratīkāśaḥ sarvataḥ pratyadṛśyata
9. purā madhyāhna-samaye bhāskare lokān tapati [sati]
praty-āditya-pratīkāśaḥ sarvataḥ pratyadṛśyata
9. Formerly, at midday, while the sun (bhāskara) was intensely heating the worlds, one resembling a counter-sun appeared from all directions.
स लोकांस्तेजसा सर्वान्स्वभासा निर्विभासयन् ।
आदित्याभिमुखोऽभ्येति गगनं पाटयन्निव ॥१०॥
10. sa lokāṁstejasā sarvānsvabhāsā nirvibhāsayan ,
ādityābhimukho'bhyeti gaganaṁ pāṭayanniva.
10. saḥ lokān tejasā sarvān sva-bhāsā nir-vibhāsayān
| āditya-abhimukhaḥ abhyeti gaganaṃ pāṭayan iva
10. saḥ sva-bhāsā sarvān lokān tejasā nir-vibhāsayān
āditya-abhimukhaḥ gaganaṃ pāṭayan iva abhyeti
10. He, outshining all worlds with his own luster and radiance, approached facing the sun, as if tearing open the sky.
हुताहुतिरिव ज्योतिर्व्याप्य तेजोमरीचिभिः ।
अनिर्देश्येन रूपेण द्वितीय इव भास्करः ॥११॥
11. hutāhutiriva jyotirvyāpya tejomarīcibhiḥ ,
anirdeśyena rūpeṇa dvitīya iva bhāskaraḥ.
11. huta-āhutiḥ iva jyotiḥ vyāpya tejaḥ-marīci-bhiḥ
| anirdeśyena rūpeṇa dvitīyaḥ iva bhāskaraḥ
11. huta-āhutiḥ iva jyotiḥ tejaḥ-marīci-bhiḥ vyāpya
anirdeśyena rūpeṇa dvitīyaḥ bhāskaraḥ iva [āśīt]
11. Like a flame (jyoti) fed with oblations, spreading its rays of light, with an indescribable form, he was like a second sun (bhāskara).
तस्याभिगमनप्राप्तौ हस्तो दत्तो विवस्वता ।
तेनापि दक्षिणो हस्तो दत्तः प्रत्यर्चनार्थिना ॥१२॥
12. tasyābhigamanaprāptau hasto datto vivasvatā ,
tenāpi dakṣiṇo hasto dattaḥ pratyarcanārthinā.
12. tasya abhi-gamana-prāptau hastaḥ dattaḥ vivasvatā |
tena api dakṣiṇaḥ hastaḥ dattaḥ prati-arcana-arthinā
12. tasya abhi-gamana-prāptau vivasvatā hastaḥ dattaḥ
tena api prati-arcana-arthinā dakṣiṇaḥ hastaḥ dattaḥ
12. Upon his arrival, a hand was extended by Vivasvat. He (the newcomer), desiring a reciprocal greeting, also extended his right hand.
ततो भित्त्वैव गगनं प्रविष्टो रविमण्डलम् ।
एकीभूतं च तत्तेजः क्षणेनादित्यतां गतम् ॥१३॥
13. tato bhittvaiva gaganaṁ praviṣṭo ravimaṇḍalam ,
ekībhūtaṁ ca tattejaḥ kṣaṇenādityatāṁ gatam.
13. tataḥ bhittvā eva gaganam praviṣṭaḥ ravimaṇḍalam
ekībhūtam ca tat tejaḥ kṣaṇena ādityatām gatam
13. tataḥ gaganam bhittvā eva ravimaṇḍalam praviṣṭaḥ
ca tat tejaḥ ekībhūtam kṣaṇena ādityatām gatam
13. Then, having indeed pierced the sky, he entered the disc of the sun. And that splendor became one with it, attaining the state of being the sun in an instant.
तत्र नः संशयो जातस्तयोस्तेजःसमागमे ।
अनयोः को भवेत्सूर्यो रथस्थो योऽयमागतः ॥१४॥
14. tatra naḥ saṁśayo jātastayostejaḥsamāgame ,
anayoḥ ko bhavetsūryo rathastho yo'yamāgataḥ.
14. tatra naḥ saṃśayaḥ jātaḥ tayoḥ tejaḥ samāgame |
anayoḥ kaḥ bhavet sūryaḥ rathasthaḥ yaḥ ayam āgataḥ
14. tatra naḥ tayoḥ tejaḥ samāgame saṃśayaḥ jātaḥ anayoḥ
yaḥ ayam rathasthaḥ āgataḥ saḥ kaḥ sūryaḥ bhavet
14. Then, a doubt arose in us regarding the conjunction of their two splendors: who, among these two, could be the sun – this one who has arrived, seated in a chariot?
ते वयं जातसंदेहाः पर्यपृच्छामहे रविम् ।
क एष दिवमाक्रम्य गतः सूर्य इवापरः ॥१५॥
15. te vayaṁ jātasaṁdehāḥ paryapṛcchāmahe ravim ,
ka eṣa divamākramya gataḥ sūrya ivāparaḥ.
15. te vayam jāta-saṃdehāḥ paryapṛcchāmahe ravim |
kaḥ eṣaḥ divam ākramya gataḥ sūryaḥ iva aparaḥ
15. te vayam jāta-saṃdehāḥ ravim paryapṛcchāmahe
kaḥ eṣaḥ aparaḥ sūryaḥ iva divam ākramya gataḥ
15. Therefore, filled with doubt, we questioned the Sun: 'Who is this other one who, having ascended to the sky, has gone forth like another sun?'
