रुरुरुवाच ।
कथं हिंसितवान्सर्पान्क्षत्रियो जनमेजयः ।
सर्पा वा हिंसितास्तात किमर्थं द्विजसत्तम ॥१॥
1. rururuvāca ,
kathaṁ hiṁsitavānsarpānkṣatriyo janamejayaḥ ,
sarpā vā hiṁsitāstāta kimarthaṁ dvijasattama.
1. ruruḥ uvāca | katham hiṃsitavān sarpān kṣatriyaḥ
janamejayaḥ | sarpāḥ vā hiṃsitāḥ tāta kimartham dvijasattama
1. Ruru said: 'How did the Kshatriya Janamejaya harm the serpents? Or, O dear one, for what purpose were the serpents harmed, O best of twice-born?'
किमर्थं मोक्षिताश्चैव पन्नगास्तेन शंस मे ।
आस्तीकेन तदाचक्ष्व श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यशेषतः ॥२॥
2. kimarthaṁ mokṣitāścaiva pannagāstena śaṁsa me ,
āstīkena tadācakṣva śrotumicchāmyaśeṣataḥ.
2. kimartham mokṣitāḥ ca eva pannagāḥ tena śaṃsa me
| āstīkena tat ācakṣva śrotum icchāmi aśeṣataḥ
2. And for what purpose were those serpents released by him, by Āstīka? Tell me that (story); I wish to hear it completely.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
श्रोष्यसि त्वं रुरो सर्वमास्तीकचरितं महत् ।
ब्राह्मणानां कथयतामित्युक्त्वान्तरधीयत ॥३॥
3. ṛṣiruvāca ,
śroṣyasi tvaṁ ruro sarvamāstīkacaritaṁ mahat ,
brāhmaṇānāṁ kathayatāmityuktvāntaradhīyata.
3. ṛṣiḥ uvāca | śroṣyasi tvam ruro sarvam āstīkacaritam
mahat | brāhmaṇānām kathayatām iti uktvā antaradhīyata
3. The Rishi said: 'O Ruru, you will hear the entire great story of Āstīka as it is narrated by Brāhmaṇas.' Having said this, he disappeared.
सूत उवाच ।
रुरुश्चापि वनं सर्वं पर्यधावत्समन्ततः ।
तमृषिं द्रष्टुमन्विच्छन्संश्रान्तो न्यपतद्भुवि ॥४॥
4. sūta uvāca ,
ruruścāpi vanaṁ sarvaṁ paryadhāvatsamantataḥ ,
tamṛṣiṁ draṣṭumanvicchansaṁśrānto nyapatadbhuvi.
4. sūtaḥ uvāca | ruruḥ ca api vanam sarvam paryadhāvat samantataḥ
| tam ṛṣim draṣṭum anvicchan saṃśrāntaḥ nyapatat bhuvi
4. Sūta said: And Ruru, searching for that sage, ran around the entire forest. Becoming utterly exhausted, he fell onto the ground.
लब्धसंज्ञो रुरुश्चायात्तच्चाचख्यौ पितुस्तदा ।
पिता चास्य तदाख्यानं पृष्टः सर्वं न्यवेदयत् ॥५॥
5. labdhasaṁjño ruruścāyāttaccācakhyau pitustadā ,
pitā cāsya tadākhyānaṁ pṛṣṭaḥ sarvaṁ nyavedayat.
5. labdhasaṃjñaḥ ruruḥ ca āyāt tat ca ācakhyau pituḥ tadā
pitā ca asya tat ākhyānam pṛṣṭaḥ sarvam nyavedayat
5. Having regained consciousness, Ruru came and then recounted that incident to his father. His father, when asked about that story, then narrated everything.
