भीष्म उवाच ।
चेदिराजकुले जातस्त्र्यक्ष एष चतुर्भुजः ।
रासभारावसदृशं रुराव च ननाद च ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
cedirājakule jātastryakṣa eṣa caturbhujaḥ ,
rāsabhārāvasadṛśaṁ rurāva ca nanāda ca.

1. Bhishma said: "This one (Śiśupāla), born in the royal family of the Cedi king, was (originally) three-eyed and four-armed. He then roared and bellowed like the braying of a donkey."
तेनास्य मातापितरौ त्रेसतुस्तौ सबान्धवौ ।
वैकृतं तच्च तौ दृष्ट्वा त्यागाय कुरुतां मतिम् ॥२॥
2. tenāsya mātāpitarau tresatustau sabāndhavau ,
vaikṛtaṁ tacca tau dṛṣṭvā tyāgāya kurutāṁ matim.
2. tena asya mātāpitarau tresatuḥ tau sabāndhavau
vaikṛtam tat ca tau dṛṣṭvā tyāgāya kurutām matim
2. His mother and father, along with their relatives, trembled because of him. And when they saw that monstrous deformity, they decided to abandon him.
ततः सभार्यं नृपतिं सामात्यं सपुरोहितम् ।
चिन्तासंमूढहृदयं वागुवाचाशरीरिणी ॥३॥
3. tataḥ sabhāryaṁ nṛpatiṁ sāmātyaṁ sapurohitam ,
cintāsaṁmūḍhahṛdayaṁ vāguvācāśarīriṇī.
3. tataḥ sabhāryam nṛpatim sāmātyam sapurohitam
cintāsaṃmūḍhahṛdayam vāk uvāca aśarīriṇī
3. Then, a bodiless voice spoke to the king, who was present with his wife, ministers, and priest, and whose heart was bewildered by worry.
एष ते नृपते पुत्रः श्रीमाञ्जातो महाबलः ।
तस्मादस्मान्न भेतव्यमव्यग्रः पाहि वै शिशुम् ॥४॥
4. eṣa te nṛpate putraḥ śrīmāñjāto mahābalaḥ ,
tasmādasmānna bhetavyamavyagraḥ pāhi vai śiśum.
4. eṣa te nṛpate putraḥ śrīmān jātaḥ mahābalaḥ
tasmāt asmāt na bhetavyam avyagraḥ pāhi vai śiśum
4. O King, this glorious and greatly powerful son is born to you. Therefore, there is no need to fear him. Indeed, protect the child, remaining undisturbed.
न चैवैतस्य मृत्युस्त्वं न कालः प्रत्युपस्थितः ।
मृत्युर्हन्तास्य शस्त्रेण स चोत्पन्नो नराधिप ॥५॥
5. na caivaitasya mṛtyustvaṁ na kālaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ ,
mṛtyurhantāsya śastreṇa sa cotpanno narādhipa.
5. na ca eva etasya mṛtyuḥ tvam na kālaḥ pratyupasthitaḥ
mṛtyuḥ hantā asya śastreṇa saḥ ca utpannaḥ narādhipa
5. And you are certainly not the cause of his death, nor is his time (kāla) at hand. O King, his slayer, who will use a weapon, has already been born.
संश्रुत्योदाहृतं वाक्यं भूतमन्तर्हितं ततः ।
पुत्रस्नेहाभिसंतप्ता जननी वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. saṁśrutyodāhṛtaṁ vākyaṁ bhūtamantarhitaṁ tataḥ ,
putrasnehābhisaṁtaptā jananī vākyamabravīt.
6. saṃśrutya udāhṛtam vākyam bhūtam antarhitam tataḥ
| putrasnehābhisantaptā jananī vākyam abravīt
6. Having heard the words spoken by the hidden being, the mother, greatly agitated by affection for her son, then spoke these words.
येनेदमीरितं वाक्यं ममैव तनयं प्रति ।
प्राञ्जलिस्तं नमस्यामि ब्रवीतु स पुनर्वचः ॥७॥
7. yenedamīritaṁ vākyaṁ mamaiva tanayaṁ prati ,
prāñjalistaṁ namasyāmi bravītu sa punarvacaḥ.
7. yena idam īritam vākyam mama eva tanayam prati |
prāñjaliḥ tam namasyāmi bravītu saḥ punaḥ vacaḥ
7. "I salute him with folded hands by whom these words were spoken concerning my very son. Let him speak again."
श्रोतुमिच्छामि पुत्रस्य कोऽस्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति ।
अन्तर्हितं ततो भूतमुवाचेदं पुनर्वचः ॥८॥
8. śrotumicchāmi putrasya ko'sya mṛtyurbhaviṣyati ,
antarhitaṁ tato bhūtamuvācedaṁ punarvacaḥ.
8. śrotum icchāmi putrasya kaḥ asya mṛtyuḥ bhaviṣyati
| antarhitam tataḥ bhūtam uvāca idam punaḥ vacaḥ
8. "I wish to hear what the death of my son will be." Then the hidden being spoke these words again.
येनोत्सङ्गे गृहीतस्य भुजावभ्यधिकावुभौ ।
पतिष्यतः क्षितितले पञ्चशीर्षाविवोरगौ ॥९॥
9. yenotsaṅge gṛhītasya bhujāvabhyadhikāvubhau ,
patiṣyataḥ kṣititale pañcaśīrṣāvivoragau.
9. yena utsaṅge gṛhītasya bhujau abhyadhikau ubhau
| patiṣyataḥ kṣititale pañcaśīrṣau iva uragau
9. "The two exceedingly strong arms of him who has been taken into your lap will fall upon the ground like two five-headed snakes."
तृतीयमेतद्बालस्य ललाटस्थं च लोचनम् ।
निमज्जिष्यति यं दृष्ट्वा सोऽस्य मृत्युर्भविष्यति ॥१०॥
10. tṛtīyametadbālasya lalāṭasthaṁ ca locanam ,
nimajjiṣyati yaṁ dṛṣṭvā so'sya mṛtyurbhaviṣyati.
10. tṛtīyam etat bālasya lalāṭastham ca locanam
nimajjiṣyati yam dṛṣṭvā saḥ asya mṛtyuḥ bhaviṣyati
10. This is the child's third eye, located on his forehead. Whoever sees it will drown, and that very person will become the child's demise.
त्र्यक्षं चतुर्भुजं श्रुत्वा तथा च समुदाहृतम् ।
धरण्यां पार्थिवाः सर्वे अभ्यगच्छन्दिदृक्षवः ॥११॥
11. tryakṣaṁ caturbhujaṁ śrutvā tathā ca samudāhṛtam ,
dharaṇyāṁ pārthivāḥ sarve abhyagacchandidṛkṣavaḥ.
11. tryakṣam caturbhujam śrutvā tathā ca samudāhṛtam
dharaṇyām pārthivāḥ sarve abhyagacchan didṛkṣavaḥ
11. Having heard that (the child was) three-eyed and four-armed, as it was declared, all the kings on Earth approached, desirous of seeing him.
तान्पूजयित्वा संप्राप्तान्यथार्हं स महीपतिः ।
एकैकस्य नृपस्याङ्के पुत्रमारोपयत्तदा ॥१२॥
12. tānpūjayitvā saṁprāptānyathārhaṁ sa mahīpatiḥ ,
ekaikasya nṛpasyāṅke putramāropayattadā.
12. tān pūjayitvā samprāptān yathārham saḥ mahīpatiḥ
ekaikasya nṛpasya aṅke putram āropayat tadā
12. Having honored those arrived kings appropriately, that ruler then placed his son on the lap of each and every king.
एवं राजसहस्राणां पृथक्त्वेन यथाक्रमम् ।
शिशुरङ्के समारूढो न तत्प्राप निदर्शनम् ॥१३॥
13. evaṁ rājasahasrāṇāṁ pṛthaktvena yathākramam ,
śiśuraṅke samārūḍho na tatprāpa nidarśanam.
13. evam rājasahasrāṇām pṛthaktvena yathākramam
śiśuḥ aṅke samārūḍhaḥ na tad prāpa nidarśanam
13. In this manner, the child was successively placed on the laps of thousands of kings, one by one, yet he did not exhibit (or achieve) that specific manifestation (of his divine form).
ततश्चेदिपुरं प्राप्तौ संकर्षणजनार्दनौ ।
यादवौ यादवीं द्रष्टुं स्वसारं तां पितुस्तदा ॥१४॥
14. tataścedipuraṁ prāptau saṁkarṣaṇajanārdanau ,
yādavau yādavīṁ draṣṭuṁ svasāraṁ tāṁ pitustadā.
14. tataḥ ca cedipuram prāptau saṅkarṣaṇajanārdanau
yādavau yādavīm draṣṭum svasāram tām pituḥ tadā
14. Then, the two Yadavas, Saṅkarṣaṇa and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), arrived at Cedipura to see their father's sister, that Yādava woman.
अभिवाद्य यथान्यायं यथाज्येष्ठं नृपांश्च तान् ।
कुशलानामयं पृष्ट्वा निषण्णौ रामकेशवौ ॥१५॥
15. abhivādya yathānyāyaṁ yathājyeṣṭhaṁ nṛpāṁśca tān ,
kuśalānāmayaṁ pṛṣṭvā niṣaṇṇau rāmakeśavau.
15. abhivādya yathānyāyam yathājyeṣṭham nṛpān ca
tān kuśalam anāmayam pṛṣṭvā niṣaṇṇau rāmakeśavau
15. Having respectfully saluted those kings according to seniority and inquired about their welfare and freedom from disease, Rāma and Keśava sat down.
अभ्यर्चितौ तदा वीरौ प्रीत्या चाभ्यधिकं ततः ।
पुत्रं दामोदरोत्सङ्गे देवी संन्यदधात्स्वयम् ॥१६॥
16. abhyarcitau tadā vīrau prītyā cābhyadhikaṁ tataḥ ,
putraṁ dāmodarotsaṅge devī saṁnyadadhātsvayam.
16. abhyarcitau tadā vīrau prītyā ca abhyadhikam tataḥ
putram dāmodarotsaṅge devī sannyadadhāt svayam
16. Then, when the two heroes were greatly honored with affection, the queen herself placed her son on Dāmodara's (Kṛṣṇa's) lap.
न्यस्तमात्रस्य तस्याङ्के भुजावभ्यधिकावुभौ ।
पेततुस्तच्च नयनं निममज्ज ललाटजम् ॥१७॥
17. nyastamātrasya tasyāṅke bhujāvabhyadhikāvubhau ,
petatustacca nayanaṁ nimamajja lalāṭajam.
17. nyastamātrasya tasya aṅke bhujau abhyadhikau
ubhau petatuḥ tat ca nayanam nimamajja lalāṭajam
17. And when he was merely placed in his lap, both of his two additional arms fell, and that forehead-born eye disappeared.
तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यथिता त्रस्ता वरं कृष्णमयाचत ।
ददस्व मे वरं कृष्ण भयार्ताया महाभुज ॥१८॥
18. taddṛṣṭvā vyathitā trastā varaṁ kṛṣṇamayācata ,
dadasva me varaṁ kṛṣṇa bhayārtāyā mahābhuja.
18. tat dṛṣṭvā vyathitā trastā varam kṛṣṇam ayācata
dadasva me varam kṛṣṇa bhayārtāyā mahābhuja
18. Seeing that, agitated and terrified, she requested a boon from Kṛṣṇa. (She said), "O mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa, grant a boon to me who am afflicted by fear."
त्वं ह्यार्तानां समाश्वासो भीतानामभयंकरः ।
पितृष्वसारं मा भैषीरित्युवाच जनार्दनः ॥१९॥
19. tvaṁ hyārtānāṁ samāśvāso bhītānāmabhayaṁkaraḥ ,
pitṛṣvasāraṁ mā bhaiṣīrityuvāca janārdanaḥ.
19. tvam hi ārtānām samāśvāsaḥ bhītānām abhayaṃkaraḥ
pitṛṣvasāram mā bhaiṣīḥ iti uvāca janārdanaḥ
19. “Indeed, you are the solace of the distressed and the giver of fearlessness to the terrified.” Thus Janārdana said to his paternal aunt, “Do not fear.”
ददानि कं वरं किं वा करवाणि पितृष्वसः ।
शक्यं वा यदि वाशक्यं करिष्यामि वचस्तव ॥२०॥
20. dadāni kaṁ varaṁ kiṁ vā karavāṇi pitṛṣvasaḥ ,
śakyaṁ vā yadi vāśakyaṁ kariṣyāmi vacastava.
20. dadāni kam varam kim vā karavāṇi pitṛṣvasaḥ
śakyam vā yadi vā aśakyam kariṣyāmi vacaḥ tava
20. “What boon shall I grant, or what shall I do, O paternal aunt? Whether it is possible or impossible, I will carry out your word.”
एवमुक्ता ततः कृष्णमब्रवीद्यदुनन्दनम् ।
शिशुपालस्यापराधान्क्षमेथास्त्वं महाबल ॥२१॥
21. evamuktā tataḥ kṛṣṇamabravīdyadunandanam ,
śiśupālasyāparādhānkṣamethāstvaṁ mahābala.
21. evam uktā tataḥ kṛṣṇam abravīt yadunandanam
śiśupālasya aparādhān kṣamethāḥ tvam mahābala
21. Having been addressed thus, she then said to Kṛṣṇa, the delight of the Yadus: “O mighty one, you should forgive the offenses of Śiśupāla.”
कृष्ण उवाच ।
अपराधशतं क्षाम्यं मया ह्यस्य पितृष्वसः ।
पुत्रस्य ते वधार्हाणां मा त्वं शोके मनः कृथाः ॥२२॥
22. kṛṣṇa uvāca ,
aparādhaśataṁ kṣāmyaṁ mayā hyasya pitṛṣvasaḥ ,
putrasya te vadhārhāṇāṁ mā tvaṁ śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
22. kṛṣṇaḥ uvāca aparādhaśatam kṣāmyam mayā hi asya pitṛṣvasaḥ
putrasya te vadhārhāṇām mā tvam śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ
22. Kṛṣṇa said: O aunt (pitṛṣvasṛ), I have indeed forgiven a hundred offenses committed by your son. Do not let your mind be troubled with sorrow for those who deserve death.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमेष नृपः पापः शिशुपालः सुमन्दधीः ।
त्वां समाह्वयते वीर गोविन्दवरदर्पितः ॥२३॥
23. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evameṣa nṛpaḥ pāpaḥ śiśupālaḥ sumandadhīḥ ,
tvāṁ samāhvayate vīra govindavaradarpitaḥ.
23. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam eṣaḥ nṛpaḥ pāpaḥ śiśupālaḥ
sumandadīḥ tvām samāhvayate vīra govindavaradarpitaḥ
23. Bhīṣma said: O hero, this sinful, extremely dull-witted King Śiśupāla indeed challenges you, arrogant due to the boon granted by Govinda.
