वैशंपायन उवाच ।
भोजाः प्रव्रजिताञ्श्रुत्वा वृष्णयश्चान्धकैः सह ।
पाण्डवान्दुःखसंतप्तान्समाजग्मुर्महावने ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
bhojāḥ pravrajitāñśrutvā vṛṣṇayaścāndhakaiḥ saha ,
pāṇḍavānduḥkhasaṁtaptānsamājagmurmahāvane.

1. Vaisampayana said: Having heard that the Pāṇḍavas were exiled and deeply afflicted by sorrow, the Bhojas, the Vṛṣṇis, and the Andhakas together came to them in the great forest.
पाञ्चालस्य च दायादा धृष्टकेतुश्च चेदिपः ।
केकयाश्च महावीर्या भ्रातरो लोकविश्रुताः ॥२॥
2. pāñcālasya ca dāyādā dhṛṣṭaketuśca cedipaḥ ,
kekayāśca mahāvīryā bhrātaro lokaviśrutāḥ.
2. pāñcālasya ca dāyādāḥ dhṛṣṭaketuḥ ca cedipaḥ

2. And the heirs of Pañcāla, along with Dhṛṣṭaketu, the lord of Cedi, and the greatly powerful Kekayas, who were brothers renowned in the world (loka).
वने तेऽभिययुः पार्थान्क्रोधामर्शसमन्विताः ।
गर्हयन्तो धार्तराष्ट्रान्किं कुर्म इति चाब्रुवन् ॥३॥
3. vane te'bhiyayuḥ pārthānkrodhāmarśasamanvitāḥ ,
garhayanto dhārtarāṣṭrānkiṁ kurma iti cābruvan.
3. vane te abhiyayuḥ pārthān krodhāmarṣasamanvitāḥ
garhayantaḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān kim kurmaḥ iti ca abruvan
3. In the forest, they approached the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas), filled with anger and indignation, denouncing the Dhārtarāṣṭras (Kauravas) and asking, "What shall we do?"
वासुदेवं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वे ते क्षत्रियर्षभाः ।
परिवार्योपविविशुर्धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥४॥
4. vāsudevaṁ puraskṛtya sarve te kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ ,
parivāryopaviviśurdharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram.

parivārya upaviviśuḥ dharmarājam yudhiṣṭhiram
4. With Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) leading, all those chief kṣatriyas (warriors) sat down surrounding Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेश्च दुरात्मनः ।
दुःशासनचतुर्थानां भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥५॥
5. vāsudeva uvāca ,
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneśca durātmanaḥ ,
duḥśāsanacaturthānāṁ bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam.
5. vāsudevaḥ uvāca duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ ca
durātmanaḥ duḥśāsanacaturthānām bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam
5. Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) spoke: "The earth will drink the blood of Duryodhana, Karṇa, and the evil-minded Śakuni, along with Duḥśāsana, who is the fourth among them."
ततः सर्वेऽभिषिञ्चामो धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ।
निकृत्योपचरन्वध्य एष धर्मः सनातनः ॥६॥
6. tataḥ sarve'bhiṣiñcāmo dharmarājaṁ yudhiṣṭhiram ,
nikṛtyopacaranvadhya eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ.
6. tataḥ sarve abhiṣiñcāmaḥ dharmarājam Yudhiṣṭhiram
nikṛtya upacaran vadhyaḥ eṣaḥ dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ
6. Therefore, all of us shall consecrate Yudhishthira as the king of righteousness (dharma). Anyone who deals deceptively is worthy of being killed; this is the eternal (sanātana) natural law (dharma).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
पार्थानामभिषङ्गेण तथा क्रुद्धं जनार्दनम् ।
अर्जुनः शमयामासा दिधक्षन्तमिव प्रजाः ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
pārthānāmabhiṣaṅgeṇa tathā kruddhaṁ janārdanam ,
arjunaḥ śamayāmāsā didhakṣantamiva prajāḥ.
7. Vaiśampāyana uvāca Pārthānām abhiṣaṅgeṇa tathā kruddham
Janārdanam Arjunaḥ śamayāmāsa didhakṣantam iva prajāḥ
7. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Arjuna appeased Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), who was so enraged by the offense against the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas), as if He desired to burn all beings (prajāḥ).
संक्रुद्धं केशवं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वदेहेषु फल्गुनः ।
कीर्तयामास कर्माणि सत्यकीर्तेर्महात्मनः ॥८॥
8. saṁkruddhaṁ keśavaṁ dṛṣṭvā pūrvadeheṣu phalgunaḥ ,
kīrtayāmāsa karmāṇi satyakīrtermahātmanaḥ.
8. saṃkruddham Keśavam dṛṣṭvā pūrvadeheṣu Phalgunaḥ
kīrtayāmāsa karmāṇi satyakīrteḥ mahātmanaḥ
8. Having seen Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) greatly enraged, Phalguna (Arjuna) recounted the deeds (karma) of the great-souled (mahātman) Satyākīrti (Kṛṣṇa) from His previous incarnations.
पुरुषस्याप्रमेयस्य सत्यस्यामिततेजसः ।
प्रजापतिपतेर्विष्णोर्लोकनाथस्य धीमतः ॥९॥
9. puruṣasyāprameyasya satyasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
prajāpatipaterviṣṇorlokanāthasya dhīmataḥ.
9. puruṣasya aprameyasya satyasya amitatejasaḥ
prajāpatipateḥ Viṣṇoḥ lokanāthasya dhīmataḥ
9. Of the immeasurable cosmic person (puruṣa), of the true one whose splendor is limitless, of Viṣṇu, the master of the lords of creation, and of the wise lord of all worlds.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
दश वर्षसहस्राणि यत्रसायंगृहो मुनिः ।
व्यचरस्त्वं पुरा कृष्ण पर्वते गन्धमादने ॥१०॥
10. arjuna uvāca ,
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi yatrasāyaṁgṛho muniḥ ,
vyacarastvaṁ purā kṛṣṇa parvate gandhamādane.
10. arjuna uvāca daśa varṣasahasrāṇi yatra-sāyaṃ-gṛhaḥ
muniḥ vyacaras tvaṃ purā kṛṣṇa parvate gandhamādane
10. Arjuna said, "O Krishna, in ancient times, for ten thousand years, you wandered on Mount Gandhamādana like a sage (muni) whose evening abode was wherever he happened to be."
दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च ।
पुष्करेष्ववसः कृष्ण त्वमपो भक्षयन्पुरा ॥११॥
11. daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca ,
puṣkareṣvavasaḥ kṛṣṇa tvamapo bhakṣayanpurā.
11. daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca
puṣkareṣu avasaḥ kṛṣṇa tvaṃ apaḥ bhakṣayan purā
11. O Krishna, formerly, for ten thousand years and (another) one thousand years (totaling eleven thousand years), you resided in the Pushkara lakes, subsisting on water.
ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्विशालायां बदर्यां मधुसूदन ।
अतिष्ठ एकपादेन वायुभक्षः शतं समाः ॥१२॥
12. ūrdhvabāhurviśālāyāṁ badaryāṁ madhusūdana ,
atiṣṭha ekapādena vāyubhakṣaḥ śataṁ samāḥ.
12. ūrdhvabāhuḥ viśālāyāṃ badaryāṃ madhusūdana
atiṣṭha ekapādena vāyubhakṣaḥ śatam samāḥ
12. O Madhusūdana, in the vast Badarī region, you stood for a hundred years with your arms raised, on one foot, subsisting on air.
अपकृष्टोत्तरासङ्गः कृशो धमनिसंततः ।
आसीः कृष्ण सरस्वत्यां सत्रे द्वादशवार्षिके ॥१३॥
13. apakṛṣṭottarāsaṅgaḥ kṛśo dhamanisaṁtataḥ ,
āsīḥ kṛṣṇa sarasvatyāṁ satre dvādaśavārṣike.
13. apakṛṣṭottarāsaṅgaḥ kṛśaḥ dhamanisaṃtataḥ
āsīḥ kṛṣṇa sarasvatyāṃ satre dvādaśavārṣike
13. O Krishna, you performed a twelve-year ritual sacrifice (sattra) on the Sarasvatī, (during which you were) emaciated, with your upper garment pulled back, and your body covered with prominent veins.
प्रभासं चाप्यथासाद्य तीर्थं पुण्यजनोचितम् ।
तथा कृष्ण महातेजा दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रकम् ।
आतिष्ठस्तप एकेन पादेन नियमे स्थितः ॥१४॥
14. prabhāsaṁ cāpyathāsādya tīrthaṁ puṇyajanocitam ,
tathā kṛṣṇa mahātejā divyaṁ varṣasahasrakam ,
ātiṣṭhastapa ekena pādena niyame sthitaḥ.
14. prabhāsam ca api atha āsādya tīrtham
puṇyajanocitam tathā kṛṣṇa mahātejā
divyam varṣasahasrakam ātiṣṭhaḥ
tapaḥ ekena pādena niyame sthitaḥ
14. And then, O Krishna, greatly resplendent one, having reached the holy place (tīrtha) of Prabhasa, which is suitable for pious people, you stood firm in a vow, performing penance (tapas) for a divine thousand years on one foot.
क्षेत्रज्ञः सर्वभूतानामादिरन्तश्च केशव ।
निधानं तपसां कृष्ण यज्ञस्त्वं च सनातनः ॥१५॥
15. kṣetrajñaḥ sarvabhūtānāmādirantaśca keśava ,
nidhānaṁ tapasāṁ kṛṣṇa yajñastvaṁ ca sanātanaḥ.
15. kṣetrajñaḥ sarvabhūtānām ādiḥ antaḥ ca keśava
nidhānam tapasām kṛṣṇa yajñaḥ tvam ca sanātanaḥ
15. O Kesava, you are the knower of the field (kṣetrajña) of all beings, their beginning and their end. O Krishna, you are the storehouse of all penances (tapas) and the eternal Vedic ritual (yajña).
निहत्य नरकं भौममाहृत्य मणिकुण्डले ।
प्रथमोत्पादितं कृष्ण मेध्यमश्वमवासृजः ॥१६॥
16. nihatya narakaṁ bhaumamāhṛtya maṇikuṇḍale ,
prathamotpāditaṁ kṛṣṇa medhyamaśvamavāsṛjaḥ.
16. nihatya narakam bhaumam āhṛtya maṇikuṇḍale
prathamotpāditam kṛṣṇa medhyam aśvam avāsṛjaḥ
16. O Krishna, having slain Bhauma Naraka and taken the jewelled earrings, you released the first-born, purified horse.
कृत्वा तत्कर्म लोकानामृषभः सर्वलोकजित् ।
अवधीस्त्वं रणे सर्वान्समेतान्दैत्यदानवान् ॥१७॥
17. kṛtvā tatkarma lokānāmṛṣabhaḥ sarvalokajit ,
avadhīstvaṁ raṇe sarvānsametāndaityadānavān.
17. kṛtvā tat karma lokānām ṛṣabhaḥ sarvalokajit
avadhīḥ tvam raṇe sarvān sametān daityadānavān
17. You, the chief and conqueror of all worlds, after performing that deed for the people, slew all the assembled Daityas and Danavas in battle.
ततः सर्वेश्वरत्वं च संप्रदाय शचीपतेः ।
मानुषेषु महाबाहो प्रादुर्भूतोऽसि केशव ॥१८॥
18. tataḥ sarveśvaratvaṁ ca saṁpradāya śacīpateḥ ,
mānuṣeṣu mahābāho prādurbhūto'si keśava.
18. tataḥ sarveśvaratvam ca sampradāya śacīpateḥ
mānuṣeṣu mahābāho prādurbhūtaḥ asi keśava
18. Then, O mighty-armed one, Keśava, after bestowing the supreme lordship upon Śacī's husband (Indra), you incarnated among humans.
स त्वं नारायणो भूत्वा हरिरासीः परंतप ।
ब्रह्मा सोमश्च सूर्यश्च धर्मो धाता यमोऽनलः ॥१९॥
19. sa tvaṁ nārāyaṇo bhūtvā harirāsīḥ paraṁtapa ,
brahmā somaśca sūryaśca dharmo dhātā yamo'nalaḥ.
19. saḥ tvam nārāyaṇaḥ bhūtvā hariḥ āsīḥ paraṃtapa
brahmā somaḥ ca sūryaḥ ca dharmaḥ dhātā yamaḥ analaḥ
19. O scorcher of foes, you, having become Nārāyaṇa, were Hari. You are Brahmā, Soma, Sūrya, Dharma (natural law), Dhātā, Yama, and Agni.
वायुर्वैश्रवणो रुद्रः कालः खं पृथिवी दिशः ।
अजश्चराचरगुरुः स्रष्टा त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ॥२०॥
20. vāyurvaiśravaṇo rudraḥ kālaḥ khaṁ pṛthivī diśaḥ ,
ajaścarācaraguruḥ sraṣṭā tvaṁ puruṣottama.
20. vāyuḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ rudraḥ kālaḥ kham pṛthivī
diśaḥ ajaḥ carācaraguruḥ sraṣṭā tvam puruṣottama
20. O best among men (puruṣottama), you are Vāyu, Vaiśravaṇa, Rudra, Kāla (time), space, earth, the directions, the unborn (aja), and the guru of all moving and non-moving beings; you are the creator.
तुरायणादिभिर्देव क्रतुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ।
अयजो भूरितेजा वै कृष्ण चैत्ररथे वने ॥२१॥
21. turāyaṇādibhirdeva kratubhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ,
ayajo bhūritejā vai kṛṣṇa caitrarathe vane.
21. turāyaṇādibhiḥ deva kratubhiḥ bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ
ayajaḥ bhūritejā vai kṛṣṇa caitrarathe vane
21. deva kṛṣṇa bhūritejāḥ (saḥ) turāyaṇādibhiḥ
bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ kratubhiḥ vai caitrarathe vane ayajaḥ
21. O Kṛṣṇa, that highly energetic one performed many Vedic rituals (yajña) in the Caitraratha forest, such as the Turāyaṇa and others, which involved extensive donations.
शतं शतसहस्राणि सुवर्णस्य जनार्दन ।
एकैकस्मिंस्तदा यज्ञे परिपूर्णानि भागशः ॥२२॥
22. śataṁ śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇasya janārdana ,
ekaikasmiṁstadā yajñe paripūrṇāni bhāgaśaḥ.
22. śatam śatasahasrāṇi suvarṇasya janārdana
ekaikasmin tadā yajñe paripūrṇāni bhāgaśaḥ
22. janārdana tadā ekaikasmin yajñe suvarṇasya
śatam śatasahasrāṇi bhāgaśaḥ paripūrṇāni
22. O Janārdana, then, in each Vedic ritual (yajña), one hundred times a hundred thousand (i.e., ten million) units of gold were completely distributed in portions.
अदितेरपि पुत्रत्वमेत्य यादवनन्दन ।
त्वं विष्णुरिति विख्यात इन्द्रादवरजो भुवि ॥२३॥
23. aditerapi putratvametya yādavanandana ,
tvaṁ viṣṇuriti vikhyāta indrādavarajo bhuvi.
23. aditeḥ api putratvam etya yādavanandana tvam
viṣṇuḥ iti vikhyātaḥ indrāt avarajaḥ bhuvi
23. O descendant of Yadu, you became a son of Aditi and are renowned on earth as Vishnu, the younger brother of Indra.
शिशुर्भूत्वा दिवं खं च पृथिवीं च परंतप ।
त्रिभिर्विक्रमणैः कृष्ण क्रान्तवानसि तेजसा ॥२४॥
24. śiśurbhūtvā divaṁ khaṁ ca pṛthivīṁ ca paraṁtapa ,
tribhirvikramaṇaiḥ kṛṣṇa krāntavānasi tejasā.
24. śiśuḥ bhūtvā divam kham ca pṛthivīm ca paraṃtapa
tribhiḥ vikramaṇaiḥ kṛṣṇa krāntavān asi tejasā
24. O tormentor of enemies (paraṃtapa), O Krishna, having become a child, you covered heaven, space, and earth with your power in three strides.
संप्राप्य दिवमाकाशमादित्यसदने स्थितः ।
अत्यरोचश्च भूतात्मन्भास्करं स्वेन तेजसा ॥२५॥
25. saṁprāpya divamākāśamādityasadane sthitaḥ ,
atyarocaśca bhūtātmanbhāskaraṁ svena tejasā.
25. saṃprāpya divam ākāśam ādityasadane sthitaḥ
atyarocaḥ ca bhūtātman bhāskaram svena tejasā
25. O essential self (bhūtātman), having attained heaven and space, and having been situated in the abode of the sun, you then outshone the sun with your own splendor.
सादिता मौरवाः पाशा निसुन्दनरकौ हतौ ।
कृतः क्षेमः पुनः पन्थाः पुरं प्राग्ज्योतिषं प्रति ॥२६॥
26. sāditā mauravāḥ pāśā nisundanarakau hatau ,
kṛtaḥ kṣemaḥ punaḥ panthāḥ puraṁ prāgjyotiṣaṁ prati.
26. sāditā mauravāḥ pāśāḥ nisundanarakau hatau kṛtaḥ
kṣemaḥ punaḥ panthāḥ puram prāgjyotiṣam prati
26. The nooses associated with Mura were destroyed, Nisunda and Naraka were killed, and the path towards the city of Prāgjyotiṣa was again made safe.
जारूथ्यामाहुतिः क्राथः शिशुपालो जनैः सह ।
भीमसेनश्च शैब्यश्च शतधन्वा च निर्जितः ॥२७॥
27. jārūthyāmāhutiḥ krāthaḥ śiśupālo janaiḥ saha ,
bhīmasenaśca śaibyaśca śatadhanvā ca nirjitaḥ.
27. jārūthyām āhutiḥ krāthaḥ śiśupālaḥ janaiḥ saha
bhīmasenaḥ ca śaibyaḥ ca śatadhanvā ca nirjitaḥ
27. Krātha, who was offered as an oblation in the Jārūthya fire, Siśupāla along with his people, Bhīmasena, Śaibya, and Śatadhanvā were vanquished.
तथा पर्जन्यघोषेण रथेनादित्यवर्चसा ।
अवाक्षीर्महिषीं भोज्यां रणे निर्जित्य रुक्मिणम् ॥२८॥
28. tathā parjanyaghoṣeṇa rathenādityavarcasā ,
avākṣīrmahiṣīṁ bhojyāṁ raṇe nirjitya rukmiṇam.
28. tathā parjanyaghoṣeṇa rathena ādityavarcasā
avākṣīḥ mahiṣīm bhojyām raṇe nirjitya rukmiṇam
28. Thus, with a chariot roaring like thunder and splendid like the sun, you carried away the Bhōja princess, after conquering Rukmin in battle.
इन्द्रद्युम्नो हतः कोपाद्यवनश्च कशेरुमान् ।
हतः सौभपतिः शाल्वस्त्वया सौभं च पातितम् ॥२९॥
29. indradyumno hataḥ kopādyavanaśca kaśerumān ,
hataḥ saubhapatiḥ śālvastvayā saubhaṁ ca pātitam.
29. indradyumnaḥ hataḥ kopāt yavanaḥ ca kaśerumān
hataḥ saubhapatiḥ śālvaḥ tvayā saubham ca pātitam
29. Indradyumna was killed out of anger, and the Yavana Kaśerumān was also slain. The lord of Saubha, Śālva, was killed, and Saubha was cast down by you.
इरावत्यां तथा भोजः कार्तवीर्यसमो युधि ।
गोपतिस्तालकेतुश्च त्वया विनिहतावुभौ ॥३०॥
30. irāvatyāṁ tathā bhojaḥ kārtavīryasamo yudhi ,
gopatistālaketuśca tvayā vinihatāvubhau.
30. irāvatyām tathā bhojaḥ kārtavīryasamaḥ yudhi
gopatiḥ tālaketuḥ ca tvayā vinihatau ubhau
30. In the region of Iravati, King Bhoja, who was as mighty as Kārtavīrya in battle, and also Gopati and Tālaketu - you vanquished both of them.
तां च भोगवतीं पुण्यामृषिकान्तां जनार्दन ।
द्वारकामात्मसात्कृत्वा समुद्रं गमयिष्यसि ॥३१॥
31. tāṁ ca bhogavatīṁ puṇyāmṛṣikāntāṁ janārdana ,
dvārakāmātmasātkṛtvā samudraṁ gamayiṣyasi.
31. tām ca bhogavatīm puṇyām ṛṣikāntām janārdana
dvārakām ātmasāt kṛtvā samudram gamayiṣyasi
31. O Janardana, you will assimilate that sacred Bhogavati, which is dear to the sages, into your own Dvārakā and then send it into the ocean.
न क्रोधो न च मात्सर्यं नानृतं मधुसूदन ।
त्वयि तिष्ठति दाशार्ह न नृशंस्यं कुतोऽनृजु ॥३२॥
32. na krodho na ca mātsaryaṁ nānṛtaṁ madhusūdana ,
tvayi tiṣṭhati dāśārha na nṛśaṁsyaṁ kuto'nṛju.
32. na krodhaḥ na ca mātsaryam na anṛtam madhusūdana
tvayi tiṣṭhati dāśārha na nṛśaṃsyam kutaḥ anṛju
32. O Madhusudana, there is no anger, no envy, and no falsehood in you. O Dāśārha, since cruelty does not exist in you, how can any crookedness be present?
आसीनं चित्तमध्ये त्वां दीप्यमानं स्वतेजसा ।
आगम्य ऋषयः सर्वेऽयाचन्ताभयमच्युत ॥३३॥
33. āsīnaṁ cittamadhye tvāṁ dīpyamānaṁ svatejasā ,
āgamya ṛṣayaḥ sarve'yācantābhayamacyuta.
33. āsīnam cittamadhye tvām dīpyamānam svatejasā
āgamya ṛṣayaḥ sarve ayācanta abhayam acyuta
33. O Acyuta, all the sages approached you, who were seated within the mind (citta) and shining with your own splendor, and implored you for protection.
युगान्ते सर्वभूतानि संक्षिप्य मधुसूदन ।
आत्मन्येवात्मसात्कृत्वा जगदास्से परंतप ॥३४॥
34. yugānte sarvabhūtāni saṁkṣipya madhusūdana ,
ātmanyevātmasātkṛtvā jagadāsse paraṁtapa.
34. yugānte sarvabhūtāni saṃkṣipya madhusūdana
ātmani eva ātmasātkṛtvā jagat āsse paraṃtapa
34. O Madhusūdana, tormentor of foes, at the end of an age, you withdraw all beings, having assimilated them into your own self (ātman), and thus you abide as the universe (jagat).
नैवं पूर्वे नापरे वा करिष्यन्ति कृतानि ते ।
कर्माणि यानि देव त्वं बाल एव महाद्युते ॥३५॥
35. naivaṁ pūrve nāpare vā kariṣyanti kṛtāni te ,
karmāṇi yāni deva tvaṁ bāla eva mahādyute.
35. na evam pūrve na apare vā kariṣyanti kṛtāni
te karmāṇi yāni deva tvam bālaḥ eva mahādyute
35. O greatly effulgent god, neither those of the past nor those of the future will perform such deeds (karma) as you performed even as a child.
कृतवान्पुण्डरीकाक्ष बलदेवसहायवान् ।
वैराजभवने चापि ब्रह्मणा न्यवसः सह ॥३६॥
36. kṛtavānpuṇḍarīkākṣa baladevasahāyavān ,
vairājabhavane cāpi brahmaṇā nyavasaḥ saha.
36. kṛtavān puṇḍarīkākṣa baladevasahāyavān
vairājabhavane ca api brahmaṇā nyavasaḥ saha
36. O lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), you performed [these deeds] while assisted by Baladeva, and you also resided with Brahma in the palace of Virāja.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा तदात्मानमात्मा कृष्णस्य पाण्डवः ।
तूष्णीमासीत्ततः पार्थमित्युवाच जनार्दनः ॥३७॥
37. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā tadātmānamātmā kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavaḥ ,
tūṣṇīmāsīttataḥ pārthamityuvāca janārdanaḥ.
37. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tadā ātmānam ātmā kṛṣṇasya
pāṇḍavaḥ tūṣṇīm āsīt tataḥ pārtham iti uvāca janārdanaḥ
37. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: After speaking thus to Krishna (the Self (ātman)), Arjuna, the Pandava, who was Krishna's very own self (ātman), then became silent. Thereafter, Janārdana (Krishna) spoke to Pārtha (Arjuna).
ममैव त्वं तवैवाहं ये मदीयास्तवैव ते ।
यस्त्वां द्वेष्टि स मां द्वेष्टि यस्त्वामनु स मामनु ॥३८॥
38. mamaiva tvaṁ tavaivāhaṁ ye madīyāstavaiva te ,
yastvāṁ dveṣṭi sa māṁ dveṣṭi yastvāmanu sa māmanu.
38. mama eva tvam tava eva aham ye madīyāḥ tava eva te yaḥ
tvām dveṣṭi saḥ mām dveṣṭi yaḥ tvām anu saḥ mām anu
38. You are indeed mine, and I am indeed yours. Those who belong to me also belong to you. He who hates you, hates me, and he who follows you, follows me.
नरस्त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष हरिर्नारायणो ह्यहम् ।
लोकाल्लोकमिमं प्राप्तौ नरनारायणावृषी ॥३९॥
39. narastvamasi durdharṣa harirnārāyaṇo hyaham ,
lokāllokamimaṁ prāptau naranārāyaṇāvṛṣī.
39. naraḥ tvam asi durdharṣa hariḥ nārāyaṇaḥ hi
aham lokāt lokam imam prāptau naranārāyaṇau ṛṣī
39. O unconquerable one, you are Nara, and I am indeed Hari, Narayana. We, the two sages (ṛṣī), Nara and Narayana, have come to this world from another world.
अनन्यः पार्थ मत्तस्त्वमहं त्वत्तश्च भारत ।
नावयोरन्तरं शक्यं वेदितुं भरतर्षभ ॥४०॥
40. ananyaḥ pārtha mattastvamahaṁ tvattaśca bhārata ,
nāvayorantaraṁ śakyaṁ vedituṁ bharatarṣabha.
40. ananyaḥ pārtha mattaḥ tvam aham tvattaḥ ca bhārata
na āvayoḥ antaram śakyam veditum bharatarṣabha
40. O Pārtha, you are not different from me, and I am not different from you, O Bhārata. O best of Bharatas, it is not possible to discern any difference between us two.
तस्मिन्वीरसमावाये संरब्धेष्वथ राजसु ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखैर्वीरैर्भ्रातृभिः परिवारिता ॥४१॥
41. tasminvīrasamāvāye saṁrabdheṣvatha rājasu ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhairvīrairbhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritā.
41. tasmin vīrasamāvāye saṃrabdheṣu atha rājasu
dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhaiḥ vīraiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritā
41. In that assembly of heroes, and among the enraged kings, she was surrounded by her heroic brothers, led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
पाञ्चाली पुण्डरीकाक्षमासीनं यादवैः सह ।
अभिगम्याब्रवीत्कृष्णा शरण्यं शरणैषिणी ॥४२॥
42. pāñcālī puṇḍarīkākṣamāsīnaṁ yādavaiḥ saha ,
abhigamyābravītkṛṣṇā śaraṇyaṁ śaraṇaiṣiṇī.
42. pāñcālī puṇḍarīkākṣam āsīnam yādavaiḥ saha
abhigamya abravīt kṛṣṇā śaraṇyam śaraṇaiṣiṇī
42. Draupadi, seeking refuge, approached the lotus-eyed Krishna, who was seated with the Yadavas, and spoke to him, the protector.
पूर्वे प्रजानिसर्गे त्वामाहुरेकं प्रजापतिम् ।
स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानामसितो देवलोऽब्रवीत् ॥४३॥
43. pūrve prajānisarge tvāmāhurekaṁ prajāpatim ,
sraṣṭāraṁ sarvabhūtānāmasito devalo'bravīt.
43. pūrve prajānisarge tvām āhuḥ ekam prajāpatim
sraṣṭāram sarvabhūtānām asitaḥ devalaḥ abravīt
43. In the ancient creation of beings, they called you the one Prajapati, the creator of all creatures. Asita and Devala declared this.
विष्णुस्त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष त्वं यज्ञो मधुसूदन ।
यष्टा त्वमसि यष्टव्यो जामदग्न्यो यथाब्रवीत् ॥४४॥
44. viṣṇustvamasi durdharṣa tvaṁ yajño madhusūdana ,
yaṣṭā tvamasi yaṣṭavyo jāmadagnyo yathābravīt.
44. viṣṇuḥ tvam asi durdharṣa tvam yajñaḥ madhusūdana
yaṣṭā tvam asi yaṣṭavyaḥ jāmadagnyaḥ yathā abravīt
44. durdharṣa tvam viṣṇuḥ asi madhusūdana tvam yajñaḥ (asi) tvam
yaṣṭā asi yaṣṭavyaḥ (ca) yathā jāmadagnyaḥ abravīt (tathā)
44. O unconquerable one, you are Viṣṇu! O Madhusūdana, you are the Vedic ritual (yajña)! You are both the performer of Vedic rituals and the one to be worshipped, just as Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma) declared.
ऋषयस्त्वां क्षमामाहुः सत्यं च पुरुषोत्तम ।
सत्याद्यज्ञोऽसि संभूतः कश्यपस्त्वां यथाब्रवीत् ॥४५॥
45. ṛṣayastvāṁ kṣamāmāhuḥ satyaṁ ca puruṣottama ,
satyādyajño'si saṁbhūtaḥ kaśyapastvāṁ yathābravīt.
45. ṛṣayaḥ tvām kṣamām āhuḥ satyam ca puruṣottama satyāt
yajñaḥ asi saṃbhūtaḥ kaśyapaḥ tvām yathā abravīt
45. puruṣottama ṛṣayaḥ tvām kṣamām satyam ca āhuḥ tvām
satyāt yajñaḥ asi saṃbhūtaḥ yathā kaśyapaḥ abravīt
45. O best among men (puruṣottama), the sages declare you to be forgiveness (kṣamā) and truth. You are born from truth, and (you are a) Vedic ritual (yajña), just as Kaśyapa declared about you.
साध्यानामपि देवानां वसूनामीश्वरेश्वरः ।
लोकभावन लोकेश यथा त्वां नारदोऽब्रवीत् ॥४६॥
46. sādhyānāmapi devānāṁ vasūnāmīśvareśvaraḥ ,
lokabhāvana lokeśa yathā tvāṁ nārado'bravīt.
46. sādhyānām api devānām vasūnām īśvareśvaraḥ
lokabhāvana lokeśa yathā tvām nāradaḥ abravīt
46. You are the Lord of lords, even of the Sādhyas, the gods, and the Vasus. O creator of worlds, O lord of worlds, just as Nārada told you.
दिवं ते शिरसा व्याप्तं पद्भ्यां च पृथिवी विभो ।
जठरं ते इमे लोकाः पुरुषोऽसि सनातनः ॥४७॥
47. divaṁ te śirasā vyāptaṁ padbhyāṁ ca pṛthivī vibho ,
jaṭharaṁ te ime lokāḥ puruṣo'si sanātanaḥ.
47. divam te śirasā vyāptam padbhyām ca pṛthivī
vibho jaṭharam te ime lokāḥ puruṣaḥ asi sanātanaḥ
47. O almighty one, heaven is pervaded by your head, and the earth by your feet. These worlds are your belly. You are the eternal cosmic person (puruṣa).
विद्यातपोऽभितप्तानां तपसा भावितात्मनाम् ।
आत्मदर्शनसिद्धानामृषीणामृषिसत्तम ॥४८॥
48. vidyātapo'bhitaptānāṁ tapasā bhāvitātmanām ,
ātmadarśanasiddhānāmṛṣīṇāmṛṣisattama.
48. vidyātapaḥ abhitaptānām tapasā bhāvitātmanām
ātmadarśanasiddhānām ṛṣīṇām ṛṣisattama
48. O best among sages, among those who are purified by knowledge and spiritual discipline (tapas), whose inner selves (ātman) are developed through spiritual discipline (tapas), and who have attained perfection through the realization of the self (ātman).
राजर्षीणां पुण्यकृतामाहवेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ।
सर्वधर्मोपपन्नानां त्वं गतिः पुरुषोत्तम ॥४९॥
49. rājarṣīṇāṁ puṇyakṛtāmāhaveṣvanivartinām ,
sarvadharmopapannānāṁ tvaṁ gatiḥ puruṣottama.
49. rājarṣīṇām puṇyakṛtām āhaveṣu anivartinām
sarvadharma-upapannānām tvam gatiḥ puruṣottama
49. O best among cosmic persons (puruṣa), you are the ultimate destination for the royal sages (rājarṣi), for those who perform meritorious deeds, who are unwavering in battles, and who are endowed with all aspects of their intrinsic nature (dharma).
त्वं प्रभुस्त्वं विभुस्त्वं भूरात्मभूस्त्वं सनातनः ।
लोकपालाश्च लोकाश्च नक्षत्राणि दिशो दश ।
नभश्चन्द्रश्च सूर्यश्च त्वयि सर्वं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥५०॥
50. tvaṁ prabhustvaṁ vibhustvaṁ bhūrātmabhūstvaṁ sanātanaḥ ,
lokapālāśca lokāśca nakṣatrāṇi diśo daśa ,
nabhaścandraśca sūryaśca tvayi sarvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam.
50. twam prabhuḥ twam vibhuḥ twam bhūḥ ātmabhūḥ
twam sanātanaḥ lokapālāḥ ca lokāḥ
ca nakṣatrāṇi diśaḥ daśa nabhaḥ candraḥ
ca sūryaḥ ca tvayi sarvam pratiṣṭhitam
50. You are the master, you are the all-pervading, you are existence itself, you are self-existent (ātman), and you are eternal. In you, everything is established: the protectors of the worlds, the worlds themselves, the constellations, the ten directions, the sky, the moon, and the sun.
मर्त्यता चैव भूतानाममरत्वं दिवौकसाम् ।
त्वयि सर्वं महाबाहो लोककार्यं प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥५१॥
51. martyatā caiva bhūtānāmamaratvaṁ divaukasām ,
tvayi sarvaṁ mahābāho lokakāryaṁ pratiṣṭhitam.
51. martyatā ca eva bhūtānām amaratvam divaukasām
tvayi sarvam mahābāho lokakāryam pratiṣṭhitam
51. O mighty-armed one, in you are established both the mortality of beings and the immortality of the celestials; indeed, all the activities of the world are established in you.
सा तेऽहं दुःखमाख्यास्ये प्रणयान्मधुसूदन ।
ईशस्त्वं सर्वभूतानां ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ॥५२॥
52. sā te'haṁ duḥkhamākhyāsye praṇayānmadhusūdana ,
īśastvaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ.
52. sā te aham duḥkham ākhyāsye praṇayāt madhusūdana
īśaḥ tvam sarvabhūtānām ye divyāḥ ye ca mānuṣāḥ
52. O Madhusūdana, out of affection I will recount my sorrow to you, for you are the lord of all beings, whether they are divine or human.
कथं नु भार्या पार्थानां तव कृष्ण सखी विभो ।
धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भगिनी सभां कृष्येत मादृशी ॥५३॥
53. kathaṁ nu bhāryā pārthānāṁ tava kṛṣṇa sakhī vibho ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī sabhāṁ kṛṣyeta mādṛśī.
53. katham nu bhāryā pārthānām tava kṛṣṇa sakhī vibho
dhṛṣṭadyumnasya bhaginī sabhām kṛṣyeta mādṛśī
53. How indeed can someone like me - the wife of the Pārthas, your friend, O Krishna, O all-pervading one (vibhu), and the sister of Dhṛṣṭadyumna - be dragged into this assembly?
स्त्रीधर्मिणी वेपमाना रुधिरेण समुक्षिता ।
एकवस्त्रा विकृष्टास्मि दुःखिता कुरुसंसदि ॥५४॥
54. strīdharmiṇī vepamānā rudhireṇa samukṣitā ,
ekavastrā vikṛṣṭāsmi duḥkhitā kurusaṁsadi.
54. strīdharmiṇī vepamānā rudhireṇa samukṣitā
ekavastrā vikṛṣṭā asmi duḥkhitā kurusaṃsadi
54. In my menstrual period, trembling and drenched in blood, I was dragged into the Kuru assembly, clad in a single garment and deeply distressed.
राजमध्ये सभायां तु रजसाभिसमीरिताम् ।
दृष्ट्वा च मां धार्तराष्ट्राः प्राहसन्पापचेतसः ॥५५॥
55. rājamadhye sabhāyāṁ tu rajasābhisamīritām ,
dṛṣṭvā ca māṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ prāhasanpāpacetasaḥ.
55. rājamadhye sabhāyām tu rajasā abhisamīritām
dṛṣṭvā ca mām dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ prāhasan pāpacetasaḥ
55. In the midst of kings, within the assembly, covered with menstrual impurity, and having seen me, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, those with sinful minds (pāpacetasaḥ), burst out laughing.
दासीभावेन भोक्तुं मामीषुस्ते मधुसूदन ।
जीवत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु पाञ्चालेष्वथ वृष्णिषु ॥५६॥
56. dāsībhāvena bhoktuṁ māmīṣuste madhusūdana ,
jīvatsu pāṇḍuputreṣu pāñcāleṣvatha vṛṣṇiṣu.
56. dāsībhāvena bhoktum mām īṣuḥ te madhusūdana
jīvatsu pāṇḍuputreṣu pāñcāleṣu atha vṛṣṇiṣu
56. O slayer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), they (the Dhārtarāṣṭras) desired to exploit me as a slave, even while the sons of Pāṇḍu, the Pāñcālas, and the Vṛṣṇis were still alive.
नन्वहं कृष्ण भीष्मस्य धृतराष्ट्रस्य चोभयोः ।
स्नुषा भवामि धर्मेण साहं दासीकृता बलात् ॥५७॥
57. nanvahaṁ kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya cobhayoḥ ,
snuṣā bhavāmi dharmeṇa sāhaṁ dāsīkṛtā balāt.
57. nanu aham kṛṣṇa bhīṣmasya dhṛtarāṣṭrasya ca ubhayoḥ
snuṣā bhavāmi dharmeṇa sā aham dāsīkṛtā balāt
57. Am I not, O Kṛṣṇa, the daughter-in-law of both Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra? I am legally (dharmeṇa) their daughter-in-law, yet I was forcibly enslaved.
गर्हये पाण्डवांस्त्वेव युधि श्रेष्ठान्महाबलान् ।
ये क्लिश्यमानां प्रेक्षन्ते धर्मपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ॥५८॥
58. garhaye pāṇḍavāṁstveva yudhi śreṣṭhānmahābalān ,
ye kliśyamānāṁ prekṣante dharmapatnīṁ yaśasvinīm.
58. garhaye pāṇḍavān tu eva yudhi śreṣṭhān mahābalān
ye kliśyamānām prekṣante dharmapatnīm yaśasvinīm
58. I truly censure the Pāṇḍavas, who, despite being the foremost and most powerful warriors in battle, merely witness their glorious and lawful wife (dharma-patnī) being tormented.
धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम् ।
यौ मां विप्रकृतां क्षुद्रैर्मर्षयेतां जनार्दन ॥५९॥
59. dhigbalaṁ bhīmasenasya dhikpārthasya dhanuṣmatām ,
yau māṁ viprakṛtāṁ kṣudrairmarṣayetāṁ janārdana.
59. dhik balam bhīmasenasya dhik pārthasya dhanuṣmatām
yau mām viprakṛtām kṣudraiḥ marṣayetām janārdana
59. Shame on Bhīmasena's strength! Shame on Arjuna (Pārtha), the foremost among archers! O Janārdana, that these two tolerate me, who has been so mistreated by these wretched individuals!
शाश्वतोऽयं धर्मपथः सद्भिराचरितः सदा ।
यद्भार्यां परिरक्षन्ति भर्तारोऽल्पबला अपि ॥६०॥
60. śāśvato'yaṁ dharmapathaḥ sadbhirācaritaḥ sadā ,
yadbhāryāṁ parirakṣanti bhartāro'lpabalā api.
60. śāśvataḥ ayam dharmapathaḥ sadbhiḥ ācaritaḥ sadā
yat bhāryām parirakṣanti bhartāraḥ alpabalāḥ api
60. This is the eternal path of natural law (dharma-patha), always observed by good people: that husbands protect their wives, even those of little strength.
भार्यायां रक्ष्यमाणायां प्रजा भवति रक्षिता ।
प्रजायां रक्ष्यमाणायामात्मा भवति रक्षितः ॥६१॥
61. bhāryāyāṁ rakṣyamāṇāyāṁ prajā bhavati rakṣitā ,
prajāyāṁ rakṣyamāṇāyāmātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ.
61. bhāryāyām rakṣyamāṇāyām prajā bhavati rakṣitā
prajāyām rakṣyamāṇāyām ātmā bhavati rakṣitaḥ
61. When a wife is protected, the family line is preserved. When the family line is preserved, one's own self (ātman) is protected.
आत्मा हि जायते तस्यां तस्माज्जाया भवत्युत ।
भर्ता च भार्यया रक्ष्यः कथं जायान्ममोदरे ॥६२॥
62. ātmā hi jāyate tasyāṁ tasmājjāyā bhavatyuta ,
bhartā ca bhāryayā rakṣyaḥ kathaṁ jāyānmamodare.
62. ātmā hi jāyate tasyām tasmāt jāyā bhavati uta
bhartā ca bhāryayā rakṣyaḥ katham jāyāt mama udare
62. Indeed, the husband's essence (ātman) is born in her; therefore, she is called "jāyā" (wife). Moreover, a husband should be protected by his wife. How, then, could he (the husband) be born from my womb (as his mother)?
नन्विमे शरणं प्राप्तान्न त्यजन्ति कदाचन ।
ते मां शरणमापन्नां नान्वपद्यन्त पाण्डवाः ॥६३॥
63. nanvime śaraṇaṁ prāptānna tyajanti kadācana ,
te māṁ śaraṇamāpannāṁ nānvapadyanta pāṇḍavāḥ.
63. nanu ime śaraṇam prāptān na tyajanti kadācana
te mām śaraṇam āpannām na anvapadyanta pāṇḍavāḥ
63. Indeed, (people) never abandon those who have sought refuge. Yet, those Pāṇḍavas did not come to my aid, even though I had sought refuge (in them).
पञ्चेमे पञ्चभिर्जाताः कुमाराश्चामितौजसः ।
एतेषामप्यवेक्षार्थं त्रातव्यास्मि जनार्दन ॥६४॥
64. pañceme pañcabhirjātāḥ kumārāścāmitaujasaḥ ,
eteṣāmapyavekṣārthaṁ trātavyāsmi janārdana.
64. pañca ime pañcabhiḥ jātāḥ kumārāḥ ca amita-ojasaḥ
eteṣām api avekṣā-artham trātavyā asmi janārdana
64. These five princes, born of five (fathers), are of immeasurable might. O Janārdana, I must be protected even for their sake.
प्रतिविन्ध्यो युधिष्ठिरात्सुतसोमो वृकोदरात् ।
अर्जुनाच्छ्रुतकीर्तिस्तु शतानीकस्तु नाकुलिः ॥६५॥
65. prativindhyo yudhiṣṭhirātsutasomo vṛkodarāt ,
arjunācchrutakīrtistu śatānīkastu nākuliḥ.
65. prativindhyaḥ yudhiṣṭhirāt suta-somaḥ vṛkodarāt
arjunāt śrutakīrtiḥ tu śatānīkaḥ tu nākuliḥ
65. Prativindhya was born from Yudhiṣṭhira, Sutasoma from Vṛkodara (Bhīma). Śrutakīrti was born from Arjuna, and Śatānīka from Nakula.
कनिष्ठाच्छ्रुतकर्मा तु सर्वे सत्यपराक्रमाः ।
प्रद्युम्नो यादृशः कृष्ण तादृशास्ते महारथाः ॥६६॥
66. kaniṣṭhācchrutakarmā tu sarve satyaparākramāḥ ,
pradyumno yādṛśaḥ kṛṣṇa tādṛśāste mahārathāḥ.
66. kaniṣṭhāt śrutakarmā tu sarve satyaparākramāḥ
pradyumnaḥ yādṛśaḥ kṛṣṇa tādṛśāḥ te mahārathāḥ
66. Indeed, all of them, beginning with the youngest Śrutakarmā, possess true valor. O Kṛṣṇa, those great charioteers are just like Pradyumna.
नन्विमे धनुषि श्रेष्ठा अजेया युधि शात्रवैः ।
किमर्थं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सहन्ते दुर्बलीयसाम् ॥६७॥
67. nanvime dhanuṣi śreṣṭhā ajeyā yudhi śātravaiḥ ,
kimarthaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṁ sahante durbalīyasām.
67. nanu ime dhanuṣi śreṣṭhāḥ ajeyāḥ yudhi śātravaiḥ
kimartham dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām sahante durbalīyasām
67. Indeed, why do these, who are excellent in archery and unconquerable by enemies in battle, tolerate the Dhārtarāṣṭras, who are the weaker ones?
अधर्मेण हृतं राज्यं सर्वे दासाः कृतास्तथा ।
सभायां परिकृष्टाहमेकवस्त्रा रजस्वला ॥६८॥
68. adharmeṇa hṛtaṁ rājyaṁ sarve dāsāḥ kṛtāstathā ,
sabhāyāṁ parikṛṣṭāhamekavastrā rajasvalā.
68. adharmeṇa hṛtaṃ rājyaṃ sarve dāsāḥ kṛtāḥ tathā
sabhāyāṃ parikṛṣṭā aham ekavastrā rajasvalā
68. The kingdom was taken away by unrighteousness (adharma), and all were made slaves. In the assembly, I was dragged while wearing only one garment and being in my menses.
नाधिज्यमपि यच्छक्यं कर्तुमन्येन गाण्डिवम् ।
अन्यत्रार्जुनभीमाभ्यां त्वया वा मधुसूदन ॥६९॥
69. nādhijyamapi yacchakyaṁ kartumanyena gāṇḍivam ,
anyatrārjunabhīmābhyāṁ tvayā vā madhusūdana.
69. na ādhijyam api yat śakyam kartum anyena gāṇḍivam
anyatra arjunabhīmābhyām tvayā vā madhusūdana
69. And indeed, Gāṇḍīva, which cannot even be strung by anyone else – except for Arjuna, Bhīma, or you, O Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa).
धिग्भीमसेनस्य बलं धिक्पार्थस्य च गाण्डिवम् ।
यत्र दुर्योधनः कृष्ण मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥७०॥
70. dhigbhīmasenasya balaṁ dhikpārthasya ca gāṇḍivam ,
yatra duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa muhūrtamapi jīvati.
70. dhik bhīmasenasya balam dhik pārthasya ca gāṇḍivam
yatra duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇa muhūrtam api jīvati
70. Shame on Bhimasena's strength and shame on Arjuna's Gāṇḍīva bow, O Kṛṣṇa, when Duryodhana continues to live even for a moment!
य एतानाक्षिपद्राष्ट्रात्सह मात्राविहिंसकान् ।
अधीयानान्पुरा बालान्व्रतस्थान्मधुसूदन ॥७१॥
71. ya etānākṣipadrāṣṭrātsaha mātrāvihiṁsakān ,
adhīyānānpurā bālānvratasthānmadhusūdana.
71. ya etān ākṣipat rāṣṭrāt saha mātrā avihimsakān
adhīyānān purā bālān vratasthān madhusūdana
71. O Madhusūdana, he who previously expelled these innocent boys, who were studying and observing vows, from the kingdom along with their mother...
भोजने भीमसेनस्य पापः प्राक्षेपयद्विषम् ।
कालकूटं नवं तीक्ष्णं संभृतं लोमहर्षणम् ॥७२॥
72. bhojane bhīmasenasya pāpaḥ prākṣepayadviṣam ,
kālakūṭaṁ navaṁ tīkṣṇaṁ saṁbhṛtaṁ lomaharṣaṇam.
72. bhojane bhīmasenasya pāpaḥ prākṣepayat viṣam
kālakūṭam navam tīkṣṇam saṃbhṛtam lomaharṣaṇam
72. During Bhimasena's meal, that wicked one (Duryodhana) caused a fresh, virulent, well-prepared, and dreadful kālakūṭa poison to be administered.
तज्जीर्णमविकारेण सहान्नेन जनार्दन ।
सशेषत्वान्महाबाहो भीमस्य पुरुषोत्तम ॥७३॥
73. tajjīrṇamavikāreṇa sahānnena janārdana ,
saśeṣatvānmahābāho bhīmasya puruṣottama.
73. tat jīrṇam avikāreṇa saha annena janārdana
saśeṣatvāt mahābāho bhīmasya puruṣottama
73. O Janārdana, that poison was digested along with the food without causing any adverse effect, O mighty-armed one, O best among persons (puruṣa), due to Bhima's resilience.
प्रमाणकोट्यां विश्वस्तं तथा सुप्तं वृकोदरम् ।
बद्ध्वैनं कृष्ण गङ्गायां प्रक्षिप्य पुनराव्रजत् ॥७४॥
74. pramāṇakoṭyāṁ viśvastaṁ tathā suptaṁ vṛkodaram ,
baddhvainaṁ kṛṣṇa gaṅgāyāṁ prakṣipya punarāvrajat.
74. pramāṇakoṭyām viśvastam tathā suptam vṛkodaram
baddhvā enam kṛṣṇa gaṅgāyām prakṣipya punaḥ āvraja t
74. Having bound Vṛkodara (Bhīma), who was fast asleep and deeply trusting, the wicked Duryodhana threw him into the Gaṅgā and then returned.
यदा विबुद्धः कौन्तेयस्तदा संछिद्य बन्धनम् ।
उदतिष्ठन्महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो महाबलः ॥७५॥
75. yadā vibuddhaḥ kaunteyastadā saṁchidya bandhanam ,
udatiṣṭhanmahābāhurbhīmaseno mahābalaḥ.
75. yadā vibuddhaḥ kaunteyaḥ tadā saṃchidya bandhanam
udatiṣṭhat mahābāhuḥ bhīmasenaḥ mahābalaḥ
75. When the son of Kunti (Bhīma) awoke, he then severed the bonds and stood up, that great-armed Bhīmasena, the immensely powerful one.
आशीविषैः कृष्णसर्पैः सुप्तं चैनमदंशयत् ।
सर्वेष्वेवाङ्गदेशेषु न ममार च शत्रुहा ॥७६॥
76. āśīviṣaiḥ kṛṣṇasarpaiḥ suptaṁ cainamadaṁśayat ,
sarveṣvevāṅgadeśeṣu na mamāra ca śatruhā.
76. āśīviṣaiḥ kṛṣṇasarpaiḥ suptam ca enam adaṃśayat
sarveṣu eva aṅgadeśeṣu na mamāra ca śatruhā
76. And he (Duryodhana) had him, while sleeping, bitten by venomous black snakes in all his body parts. Yet, the destroyer of enemies (Bhīma) did not die.
प्रतिबुद्धस्तु कौन्तेयः सर्वान्सर्पानपोथयत् ।
सारथिं चास्य दयितमपहस्तेन जघ्निवान् ॥७७॥
77. pratibuddhastu kaunteyaḥ sarvānsarpānapothayat ,
sārathiṁ cāsya dayitamapahastena jaghnivān.
77. pratibuddhaḥ tu kaunteyaḥ sarvān sarpān apothayat
sārathim ca asya dayitam apahastena jaghnivān
77. But the son of Kunti (Bhīma), having awakened, crushed all the snakes. And with a blow of his hand, he killed his (Duryodhana's) dear charioteer.
पुनः सुप्तानुपाधाक्षीद्बालकान्वारणावते ।
शयानानार्यया सार्धं को नु तत्कर्तुमर्हति ॥७८॥
78. punaḥ suptānupādhākṣīdbālakānvāraṇāvate ,
śayānānāryayā sārdhaṁ ko nu tatkartumarhati.
78. punaḥ suptān upādhākṣīt bālakān vāraṇāvate
śayānān āryayā sārdham kaḥ nu tat kartum arhati
78. In Vāraṇāvata, he again burned the sleeping children who were lying down with the noble lady. Who indeed would be capable of committing such an act?
यत्रार्या रुदती भीता पाण्डवानिदमब्रवीत् ।
महद्व्यसनमापन्ना शिखिना परिवारिता ॥७९॥
79. yatrāryā rudatī bhītā pāṇḍavānidamabravīt ,
mahadvyasanamāpannā śikhinā parivāritā.

mahat vyasanam āpannā śikhinā parivāritā
79. It was then that the noble lady, weeping and frightened, afflicted by great misfortune and surrounded by fire, spoke these words to the Pāṇḍavas.
हा हतास्मि कुतो न्वद्य भवेच्छान्तिरिहानलात् ।
अनाथा विनशिष्यामि बालकैः पुत्रकैः सह ॥८०॥
80. hā hatāsmi kuto nvadya bhavecchāntirihānalāt ,
anāthā vinaśiṣyāmi bālakaiḥ putrakaiḥ saha.
80. hā hatā asmi kutaḥ nu adya bhavet śāntiḥ iha
analāt anāthā vinaśiṣyāmi bālakaiḥ putrakaiḥ saha
80. Alas, I am ruined! Where can peace from this fire be found now? Helpless, I shall perish along with these children and my sons.
तत्र भीमो महाबाहुर्वायुवेगपराक्रमः ।
आर्यामाश्वासयामास भ्रातॄंश्चापि वृकोदरः ॥८१॥
81. tatra bhīmo mahābāhurvāyuvegaparākramaḥ ,
āryāmāśvāsayāmāsa bhrātṝṁścāpi vṛkodaraḥ.
81. tatra bhīmaḥ mahābāhuḥ vāyuvegaparākramaḥ
āryām āśvāsayāmāsa bhrātṝn ca api vṛkodaraḥ
81. Then Bhīma, the mighty-armed one, whose valor was like the speed of wind, also known as Vṛkodara, consoled the noble lady and his brothers.
वैनतेयो यथा पक्षी गरुडः पततां वरः ।
तथैवाभिपतिष्यामि भयं वो नेह विद्यते ॥८२॥
82. vainateyo yathā pakṣī garuḍaḥ patatāṁ varaḥ ,
tathaivābhipatiṣyāmi bhayaṁ vo neha vidyate.
82. vainateyaḥ yathā pakṣī garuḍaḥ patatām varaḥ
tathā eva abhipatiṣyāmi bhayam vaḥ na iha vidyate
82. Just as Garuḍa, the son of Vinatā, is the foremost among birds, so too will I fly towards you. No fear exists for you here.
आर्यामङ्केन वामेन राजानं दक्षिणेन च ।
अंसयोश्च यमौ कृत्वा पृष्ठे बीभत्सुमेव च ॥८३॥
83. āryāmaṅkena vāmena rājānaṁ dakṣiṇena ca ,
aṁsayośca yamau kṛtvā pṛṣṭhe bībhatsumeva ca.

aṃsayoḥ ca yamau kṛtvā pṛṣṭhe bībhatsum eva ca
83. Having placed the noble lady on his left side and the king on his right, and the twins on his shoulders, and Bibhatsu (Arjuna) himself on his back.
सहसोत्पत्य वेगेन सर्वानादाय वीर्यवान् ।
भ्रातॄनार्यां च बलवान्मोक्षयामास पावकात् ॥८४॥
84. sahasotpatya vegena sarvānādāya vīryavān ,
bhrātṝnāryāṁ ca balavānmokṣayāmāsa pāvakāt.
84. sahasā utpatya vegena sarvān ādāya vīryavān
bhrātṝn āryām ca balavān mokṣayāmāsa pāvakāt
84. The powerful and mighty (Bhīma), suddenly leaping up with great speed and taking all of them, rescued his brothers and the noble lady (Kuntī) from the fire.
ते रात्रौ प्रस्थिताः सर्वे मात्रा सह यशस्विनः ।
अभ्यगच्छन्महारण्यं हिडिम्बवनमन्तिकात् ॥८५॥
85. te rātrau prasthitāḥ sarve mātrā saha yaśasvinaḥ ,
abhyagacchanmahāraṇyaṁ hiḍimbavanamantikāt.
85. te rātrau prasthitāḥ sarve mātrā saha yaśasvinaḥ
abhyagacchan mahāraṇyam hiḍimbavanam antikāt
85. All of those glorious ones departed at night with their mother. From a nearby location, they reached the great forest, the Hiḍimba forest.
श्रान्ताः प्रसुप्तास्तत्रेमे मात्रा सह सुदुःखिताः ।
सुप्तांश्चैनानभ्यगच्छद्धिडिम्बा नाम राक्षसी ॥८६॥
86. śrāntāḥ prasuptāstatreme mātrā saha suduḥkhitāḥ ,
suptāṁścainānabhyagacchaddhiḍimbā nāma rākṣasī.

suptān ca enān abhyagacchad hiḍimbā nāma rākṣasī
86. There, exhausted, deeply asleep, and greatly distressed along with their mother, these (Pāṇḍavas) were approached by a demoness (rākṣasī) named Hiḍimbā while they were sleeping.
भीमस्य पादौ कृत्वा तु स्व उत्सङ्गे ततो बलात् ।
पर्यमर्दत संहृष्टा कल्याणी मृदुपाणिना ॥८७॥
87. bhīmasya pādau kṛtvā tu sva utsaṅge tato balāt ,
paryamardata saṁhṛṣṭā kalyāṇī mṛdupāṇinā.

87. Then, the beautiful (kalyāṇī) and joyful (saṃhṛṣṭā) Hiḍimbā, having placed Bhīma's feet in her own lap, began to massage them vigorously with her soft hand.
तामबुध्यदमेयात्मा बलवान्सत्यविक्रमः ।
पर्यपृच्छच्च तां भीमः किमिहेच्छस्यनिन्दिते ॥८८॥
88. tāmabudhyadameyātmā balavānsatyavikramaḥ ,
paryapṛcchacca tāṁ bhīmaḥ kimihecchasyanindite.
88. tām abudhyat ameyātmā balavān satyavikramaḥ
paryapṛcchat ca tām bhīmaḥ kim iha icchasi anindite
88. Bhīma, the powerful one of immeasurable spirit (ātman) and true valor, became aware of her and asked her, 'O blameless one, what do you desire here?'
तयोः श्रुत्वा तु कथितमागच्छद्राक्षसाधमः ।
भीमरूपो महानादान्विसृजन्भीमदर्शनः ॥८९॥
89. tayoḥ śrutvā tu kathitamāgacchadrākṣasādhamaḥ ,
bhīmarūpo mahānādānvisṛjanbhīmadarśanaḥ.
89. tayoḥ śrutvā tu kathitam āgacchad rākṣasādhamaḥ
bhīmarūpaḥ mahānādān visṛjan bhīmadarśanaḥ
89. Indeed, having heard their conversation, the vilest of demons (rākṣasādhama), possessing a terrifying form and a fearsome appearance, arrived, emitting great roars.
केन सार्धं कथयसि आनयैनं ममान्तिकम् ।
हिडिम्बे भक्षयिष्यावो न चिरं कर्तुमर्हसि ॥९०॥
90. kena sārdhaṁ kathayasi ānayainaṁ mamāntikam ,
hiḍimbe bhakṣayiṣyāvo na ciraṁ kartumarhasi.
90. kena sārdham kathayasi ānaya enam mama antikam
hiḍimbe bhakṣayiṣyāvaḥ na ciram kartum arhasi
90. With whom are you speaking? Bring him to my presence. O Hiḍimbā, we two will devour him. You should not delay.
सा कृपासंगृहीतेन हृदयेन मनस्विनी ।
नैनमैच्छत्तदाख्यातुमनुक्रोशादनिन्दिता ॥९१॥
91. sā kṛpāsaṁgṛhītena hṛdayena manasvinī ,
nainamaicchattadākhyātumanukrośādaninditā.
91. sā kṛpā saṅgṛhītena hṛdayena manasvinī na
enam aicchat tadā ākhyātum anukrośāt aninditā
91. She, the high-minded one, with a heart seized by compassion, the blameless one, then did not wish to reveal him out of pity.
स नादान्विनदन्घोरान्राक्षसः पुरुषादकः ।
अभ्यद्रवत वेगेन भीमसेनं तदा किल ॥९२॥
92. sa nādānvinadanghorānrākṣasaḥ puruṣādakaḥ ,
abhyadravata vegena bhīmasenaṁ tadā kila.
92. sa nādān vinadan ghorān rākṣasaḥ puruṣādakaḥ
abhyadravat vegena bhīmasenam tadā kila
92. That man-eating, fearsome rākṣasa, roaring frightful sounds, then indeed rushed with speed towards Bhīmasena.
तमभिद्रुत्य संक्रुद्धो वेगेन महता बली ।
अगृह्णात्पाणिना पाणिं भीमसेनस्य राक्षसः ॥९३॥
93. tamabhidrutya saṁkruddho vegena mahatā balī ,
agṛhṇātpāṇinā pāṇiṁ bhīmasenasya rākṣasaḥ.
93. tam abhidrutya saṃkruddhaḥ vegena mahatā balī
agṛhṇāt pāṇinā pāṇim bhīmasenasya rākṣasaḥ
93. Having rushed towards him with great speed, the enraged and mighty rākṣasa seized Bhīmasena's hand with his own.
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शं वज्रसंहननं दृढम् ।
संहत्य भीमसेनाय व्याक्षिपत्सहसा करम् ॥९४॥
94. indrāśanisamasparśaṁ vajrasaṁhananaṁ dṛḍham ,
saṁhatya bhīmasenāya vyākṣipatsahasā karam.

94. With a touch like Indra's thunderbolt and a firm, adamantine build, he clenched (his strength) and suddenly flung his hand towards Bhīmasena.
गृहीतं पाणिना पाणिं भीमसेनोऽथ रक्षसा ।
नामृष्यत महाबाहुस्तत्राक्रुध्यद्वृकोदरः ॥९५॥
95. gṛhītaṁ pāṇinā pāṇiṁ bhīmaseno'tha rakṣasā ,
nāmṛṣyata mahābāhustatrākrudhyadvṛkodaraḥ.
95. gṛhītam pāṇinā pāṇim bhīmasenaḥ atha rakṣasā na
amṛṣyata mahābāhuḥ tatra akrudhyat vṛkodaraḥ
95. Then Bhīmasena, the mighty-armed one, could not tolerate his hand being seized by the demon (rakṣas). There, Vṛkodara became furious.
तत्रासीत्तुमुलं युद्धं भीमसेनहिडिम्बयोः ।
सर्वास्त्रविदुषोर्घोरं वृत्रवासवयोरिव ॥९६॥
96. tatrāsīttumulaṁ yuddhaṁ bhīmasenahiḍimbayoḥ ,
sarvāstraviduṣorghoraṁ vṛtravāsavayoriva.
96. tatra āsīt tumulam yuddham bhīmasenahiḍimbayoḥ
sarvāstraviduṣoḥ ghoram vṛtravāsavayoḥ iva
96. Then, a tumultuous and dreadful battle occurred there between Bhīmasena and Hiḍimba, both of whom were skilled in all weapons, just like the battle between Vṛtra and Vāsava (Indra).
हत्वा हिडिम्बं भीमोऽथ प्रस्थितो भ्रातृभिः सह ।
हिडिम्बामग्रतः कृत्वा यस्यां जातो घटोत्कचः ॥९७॥
97. hatvā hiḍimbaṁ bhīmo'tha prasthito bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
hiḍimbāmagrataḥ kṛtvā yasyāṁ jāto ghaṭotkacaḥ.
97. hatvā hiḍimbam bhīmaḥ atha prasthitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha hiḍimbām agrataḥ kṛtvā yasyām jātaḥ ghaṭotkacaḥ
97. Then Bhīma, having killed Hiḍimba, set out with his brothers, leading Hiḍimbā, from whom Ghaṭotkaca was born.
ततश्च प्राद्रवन्सर्वे सह मात्रा यशस्विनः ।
एकचक्रामभिमुखाः संवृता ब्राह्मणव्रजैः ॥९८॥
98. tataśca prādravansarve saha mātrā yaśasvinaḥ ,
ekacakrāmabhimukhāḥ saṁvṛtā brāhmaṇavrajaiḥ.
98. tataḥ ca prādravan sarve saha mātrā yaśasvinaḥ
ekacakrām abhimukhāḥ saṃvṛtā brāhmaṇavrajaiḥ
98. And then, all the glorious ones, accompanied by their mother, proceeded towards Ekacakrā, surrounded by groups of brahmins.
प्रस्थाने व्यास एषां च मन्त्री प्रियहितोऽभवत् ।
ततोऽगच्छन्नेकचक्रां पाण्डवाः संशितव्रताः ॥९९॥
99. prasthāne vyāsa eṣāṁ ca mantrī priyahito'bhavat ,
tato'gacchannekacakrāṁ pāṇḍavāḥ saṁśitavratāḥ.
99. prasthāne vyāsaḥ eṣām ca mantrī priyahitaḥ abhavat
tataḥ agacchan ekacakrām pāṇḍavāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
99. And Vyāsa became their dear and beneficial advisor for the journey. Then, the Pāṇḍavas, resolute in their vows, went to Ekacakrā.
तत्राप्यासादयामासुर्बकं नाम महाबलम् ।
पुरुषादं प्रतिभयं हिडिम्बेनैव संमितम् ॥१००॥
100. tatrāpyāsādayāmāsurbakaṁ nāma mahābalam ,
puruṣādaṁ pratibhayaṁ hiḍimbenaiva saṁmitam.
100. tatra api āsādayām āsuḥ bakam nāma mahābalam
puruṣādam pratibhayam hiḍimbena eva saṃmitam
100. There they also encountered the very mighty man-eater named Baka, who was terrifying and indeed comparable to Hiḍimba.
तं चापि विनिहत्योग्रं भीमः प्रहरतां वरः ।
सहितो भ्रातृभिः सर्वैर्द्रुपदस्य पुरं ययौ ॥१०१॥
101. taṁ cāpi vinihatyograṁ bhīmaḥ praharatāṁ varaḥ ,
sahito bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvairdrupadasya puraṁ yayau.
101. tam ca api vinihatya ugram bhīmaḥ praharatām varaḥ
sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sarvaiḥ drupadasya puram yayau
101. And having also killed that fierce (demon), Bhīma, the best among warriors, accompanied by all his brothers, went to the city of Drupada.
लब्धाहमपि तत्रैव वसता सव्यसाचिना ।
यथा त्वया जिता कृष्ण रुक्मिणी भीष्मकात्मजा ॥१०२॥
102. labdhāhamapi tatraiva vasatā savyasācinā ,
yathā tvayā jitā kṛṣṇa rukmiṇī bhīṣmakātmajā.
102. labdhā aham api tatra eva vasatā savyasācinā
yathā tvayā jitā kṛṣṇa rukmiṇī bhīṣmakātmajā
102. Just as Rukmiṇī, the daughter of Bhīṣmaka, was won by you, O Kṛṣṇa, so too was I obtained by Arjuna (Savyasācin) while he was dwelling there.
एवं सुयुद्धे पार्थेन जिताहं मधुसूदन ।
स्वयंवरे महत्कर्म कृत्वा नसुकरं परैः ॥१०३॥
103. evaṁ suyuddhe pārthena jitāhaṁ madhusūdana ,
svayaṁvare mahatkarma kṛtvā nasukaraṁ paraiḥ.
103. evam suyuddhe pārtena jitā aham madhusūdana
svayavare mahat karma kṛtvā na sukaram paraiḥ
103. O Madhusūdana, in this way, I was won by Arjuna (Pārtha) in a great battle (svayaṃvara), after he performed a mighty feat that was not easily accomplished by others.
एवं क्लेशैः सुबहुभिः क्लिश्यमानाः सुदुःखिताः ।
निवसामार्यया हीनाः कृष्ण धौम्यपुरःसराः ॥१०४॥
104. evaṁ kleśaiḥ subahubhiḥ kliśyamānāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ ,
nivasāmāryayā hīnāḥ kṛṣṇa dhaumyapuraḥsarāḥ.
104. evam kleśaiḥ subahubhiḥ kliśyamānāḥ suduḥkhitāḥ
nivasāma āryayā hīnāḥ kṛṣṇa dhaumyapuraḥsarāḥ
104. O Kṛṣṇa, being tormented by so many afflictions and greatly distressed, we dwell here, deprived of the venerable lady (Kuntī), with Dhaumya as our leader.
त इमे सिंहविक्रान्ता वीर्येणाभ्यधिकाः परैः ।
विहीनैः परिक्लिश्यन्तीं समुपेक्षन्त मां कथम् ॥१०५॥
105. ta ime siṁhavikrāntā vīryeṇābhyadhikāḥ paraiḥ ,
vihīnaiḥ parikliśyantīṁ samupekṣanta māṁ katham.
105. te ime siṃhavikrāntāḥ vīryeṇa abhyadhikāḥ paraiḥ
vihīnaiḥ parikliśyantīm samūpekṣanta mām katham
105. How can these very ones, who possess the valor of lions and are superior to others in prowess, abandon me when I am being tormented by those who are inferior?
एतादृशानि दुःखानि सहन्ते दुर्बलीयसाम् ।
दीर्घकालं प्रदीप्तानि पापानां क्षुद्रकर्मणाम् ॥१०६॥
106. etādṛśāni duḥkhāni sahante durbalīyasām ,
dīrghakālaṁ pradīptāni pāpānāṁ kṣudrakarmaṇām.
106. etādṛśāni duḥkhāni sahante durbalīyasām
dīrghakālam pradīptāni pāpānām kṣudrakarmaṇām
106. The weakest endure such miseries, which burn intensely for a long time, as a result of their petty, sinful actions.
कुले महति जातास्मि दिव्येन विधिना किल ।
पाण्डवानां प्रिया भार्या स्नुषा पाण्डोर्महात्मनः ॥१०७॥
107. kule mahati jātāsmi divyena vidhinā kila ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ priyā bhāryā snuṣā pāṇḍormahātmanaḥ.

107. Indeed, I was born into a great family by a divine decree. I am the beloved wife of the Pāṇḍavas and the daughter-in-law of the great-souled Pāṇḍu.
कचग्रहमनुप्राप्ता सास्मि कृष्ण वरा सती ।
पञ्चानामिन्द्रकल्पानां प्रेक्षतां मधुसूदन ॥१०८॥
108. kacagrahamanuprāptā sāsmi kṛṣṇa varā satī ,
pañcānāmindrakalpānāṁ prekṣatāṁ madhusūdana.

pañcānām indrakalpānām prekṣatām madhusūdana
108. O Kṛṣṇa, I, that excellent and virtuous woman, have been seized by the hair, while the five Pāṇḍavas, who are like Indra, watch on, O Madhusūdana.
इत्युक्त्वा प्रारुदत्कृष्णा मुखं प्रच्छाद्य पाणिना ।
पद्मकोशप्रकाशेन मृदुना मृदुभाषिणी ॥१०९॥
109. ityuktvā prārudatkṛṣṇā mukhaṁ pracchādya pāṇinā ,
padmakośaprakāśena mṛdunā mṛdubhāṣiṇī.

109. Having spoken thus, Draupadī (Kṛṣṇā), the soft-spoken woman, began to cry, covering her face with her soft hand, which shone brightly like a lotus bud.
स्तनावपतितौ पीनौ सुजातौ शुभलक्षणौ ।
अभ्यवर्षत पाञ्चाली दुःखजैरश्रुबिन्दुभिः ॥११०॥
110. stanāvapatitau pīnau sujātau śubhalakṣaṇau ,
abhyavarṣata pāñcālī duḥkhajairaśrubindubhiḥ.

110. Draupadī showered her full, well-formed, and auspicious-featured breasts with tears born of her sorrow.
चक्षुषी परिमार्जन्ती निःश्वसन्ती पुनः पुनः ।
बाष्पपूर्णेन कण्ठेन क्रुद्धा वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१११॥
111. cakṣuṣī parimārjantī niḥśvasantī punaḥ punaḥ ,
bāṣpapūrṇena kaṇṭhena kruddhā vacanamabravīt.

111. Wiping her eyes and sighing repeatedly, the enraged Draupadī spoke with a voice choked with tears.
नैव मे पतयः सन्ति न पुत्रा मधुसूदन ।
न भ्रातरो न च पिता नैव त्वं न च बान्धवाः ॥११२॥
112. naiva me patayaḥ santi na putrā madhusūdana ,
na bhrātaro na ca pitā naiva tvaṁ na ca bāndhavāḥ.
112. na eva me patayaḥ santi na putrāḥ madhusūdana na
bhrātaraḥ na ca pitā na eva tvam na ca bāndhavāḥ
112. O Madhusūdana, I have neither husbands nor sons, neither brothers nor a father; indeed, I have neither you nor any kinsmen.
ये मां विप्रकृतां क्षुद्रैरुपेक्षध्वं विशोकवत् ।
न हि मे शाम्यते दुःखं कर्णो यत्प्राहसत्तदा ॥११३॥
113. ye māṁ viprakṛtāṁ kṣudrairupekṣadhvaṁ viśokavat ,
na hi me śāmyate duḥkhaṁ karṇo yatprāhasattadā.
113. ye mām viprakṛtām kṣudraiḥ upekṣadhvam viśokavat
na hi me śāmyate duḥkham karṇaḥ yat prāhasat tadā
113. How can you remain indifferent (viśokavat), you who disregard me, though I have been wronged by these contemptible people? Indeed, my suffering will not subside because of how Karṇa mocked me then.
अथैनामब्रवीत्कृष्णस्तस्मिन्वीरसमागमे ।
रोदिष्यन्ति स्त्रियो ह्येवं येषां क्रुद्धासि भामिनि ॥११४॥
114. athaināmabravītkṛṣṇastasminvīrasamāgame ,
rodiṣyanti striyo hyevaṁ yeṣāṁ kruddhāsi bhāmini.
114. atha enām abravīt kṛṣṇaḥ tasmin vīrasamāgame
rodiṣyanti striyaḥ hi evam yeṣām kruddhā asi bhāmini
114. Then, in that assembly of heroes, Krishna said to her, 'O angry lady, the women whose men you are furious with will certainly weep like this.'
बीभत्सुशरसंछन्नाञ्शोणितौघपरिप्लुतान् ।
निहताञ्जीवितं त्यक्त्वा शयानान्वसुधातले ॥११५॥
115. bībhatsuśarasaṁchannāñśoṇitaughapariplutān ,
nihatāñjīvitaṁ tyaktvā śayānānvasudhātale.

115. The women will weep for those men who, covered by Arjuna's (Bībhatsu's) arrows, drenched in torrents of blood, slain, and having abandoned their lives, lie upon the surface of the earth.
यत्समर्थं पाण्डवानां तत्करिष्यामि मा शुचः ।
सत्यं ते प्रतिजानामि राज्ञां राज्ञी भविष्यसि ॥११६॥
116. yatsamarthaṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ tatkariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ ,
satyaṁ te pratijānāmi rājñāṁ rājñī bhaviṣyasi.
116. yat samartham pāṇḍavānām tat kariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
satyam te pratijānāmi rājñām rājñī bhaviṣyasi
116. I will do whatever is proper for the Pāṇḍavas. Do not grieve. I truly promise you, you will be the queen of kings.
पतेद्द्यौर्हिमवाञ्शीर्येत्पृथिवी शकलीभवेत् ।
शुष्येत्तोयनिधिः कृष्णे न मे मोघं वचो भवेत् ॥११७॥
117. pateddyaurhimavāñśīryetpṛthivī śakalībhavet ,
śuṣyettoyanidhiḥ kṛṣṇe na me moghaṁ vaco bhavet.
117. patet dyauḥ himavān śīryet pṛthivī śakalībhavet
śuṣyet toyanidhiḥ kṛṣṇe na me mogham vacaḥ bhavet
117. Even if the sky were to fall, the Himalayas to shatter, the earth to break into fragments, or the ocean to dry up, O Kṛṣṇā, my words would not be futile.
धृष्टद्युम्न उवाच ।
अहं द्रोणं हनिष्यामि शिखण्डी तु पितामहम् ।
दुर्योधनं भीमसेनः कर्णं हन्ता धनंजयः ॥११८॥
118. dhṛṣṭadyumna uvāca ,
ahaṁ droṇaṁ haniṣyāmi śikhaṇḍī tu pitāmaham ,
duryodhanaṁ bhīmasenaḥ karṇaṁ hantā dhanaṁjayaḥ.
118. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ uvāca | aham droṇam haniṣyāmi śikhaṇḍī tu
pitāmaham | duryodhanam bhīmasenaḥ karṇam hantā dhanañjayaḥ
118. Dhṛṣṭadyumna said, "I will kill Droṇa, and Śikhaṇḍī will kill the grandfather (pitāmaha). Bhīmasena will kill Duryodhana, and Dhanañjaya will kill Karṇa."
रामकृष्णौ व्यपाश्रित्य अजेयाः स्म शुचिस्मिते ।
अपि वृत्रहणा युद्धे किं पुनर्धृतराष्ट्रजैः ॥११९॥
119. rāmakṛṣṇau vyapāśritya ajeyāḥ sma śucismite ,
api vṛtrahaṇā yuddhe kiṁ punardhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ.
119. rāmakṛṣṇau vyapāśritya ajeyāḥ sma śucismite |
api vṛtrahaṇā yuddhe kim punaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrajaiḥ
119. O pure-smiling one, relying on Rāma and Kṛṣṇa, we are unconquerable. What to say of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, when we would be unconquerable even against Indra (vṛtrahaṇ) in battle?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तेऽभिमुखा वीरा वासुदेवमुपस्थिता ।
तेषां मध्ये महाबाहुः केशवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२०॥
120. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityukte'bhimukhā vīrā vāsudevamupasthitā ,
teṣāṁ madhye mahābāhuḥ keśavo vākyamabravīt.
120. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca | iti ukte abhimukhāḥ vīrāḥ vāsudevam
upasthitāḥ | teṣām madhye mahābāhuḥ keśavaḥ vākyam abravīt
120. Vaiśampāyana said, "When this was uttered, the heroes stood facing Vāsudeva. Among them, the mighty-armed Keśava (Kṛṣṇa) spoke these words."
