वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा कुरून्सर्वान्भीष्मः शांतनवस्तदा ।
तूष्णीं बभूव कौरव्यः स मुहूर्तमरिंदम ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktvā kurūnsarvānbhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavastadā ,
tūṣṇīṁ babhūva kauravyaḥ sa muhūrtamariṁdama.

tadā tūṣṇīm babhūva kauravyaḥ saḥ muhūrtam arindama
1. Vaiśampāyana uvāca: tadā śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ arindama kauravyaḥ saḥ sarvān kurūn evam uktvā muhūrtam tūṣṇīm babhūva.
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus spoken to all the Kurus, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, that Kuru warrior and subduer of foes, then became silent for a moment.
धारयामास चात्मानं धारणासु यथाक्रमम् ।
तस्योर्ध्वमगमन्प्राणाः संनिरुद्धा महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. dhārayāmāsa cātmānaṁ dhāraṇāsu yathākramam ,
tasyordhvamagamanprāṇāḥ saṁniruddhā mahātmanaḥ.
2. dhārayāmāsa ca ātmānam dhāraṇāsu yathākramam tasya
ūrdhvam agaman prāṇāḥ saṃniruddhāḥ mahātmanaḥ
2. ca saḥ yathākramam dhāraṇāsu ātmānam dhārayāmāsa.
tasya mahātmanaḥ saṃniruddhāḥ prāṇāḥ ūrdhvam agaman.
2. He also held his breath (ātman) in the prescribed stages of concentration (dhāraṇā). The vital breaths (prāṇa) of that great soul (mahātman), having been fully restrained, then ascended upwards.
इदमाश्चर्यमासीच्च मध्ये तेषां महात्मनाम् ।
यद्यन्मुञ्चति गात्राणां स शंतनुसुतस्तदा ।
तत्तद्विशल्यं भवति योगयुक्तस्य तस्य वै ॥३॥
3. idamāścaryamāsīcca madhye teṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
yadyanmuñcati gātrāṇāṁ sa śaṁtanusutastadā ,
tattadviśalyaṁ bhavati yogayuktasya tasya vai.
3. idam āścaryam āsīt ca madhye teṣām
mahātmanām yadyat muñcati gātrāṇām
saḥ śaṃtanusutaḥ tadā tattat
viśalyam bhavati yogayuktasya tasya vai
3. ca idam āścaryam teṣām mahātmanām madhye āsīt.
tadā saḥ śaṃtanusutaḥ yogayuktasya tasya gātrāṇām yadyat muñcati,
tattat vai viśalyam bhavati.
3. And this marvel occurred in the midst of those great souls (mahātman): whatever the son of Shantanu (Bhishma), who was engrossed in (yoga), released from his limbs, that part indeed became free of arrows.
क्षणेन प्रेक्षतां तेषां विशल्यः सोऽभवत्तदा ।
तं दृष्ट्वा विस्मिताः सर्वे वासुदेवपुरोगमाः ।
सह तैर्मुनिभिः सर्वैस्तदा व्यासादिभिर्नृप ॥४॥
4. kṣaṇena prekṣatāṁ teṣāṁ viśalyaḥ so'bhavattadā ,
taṁ dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ sarve vāsudevapurogamāḥ ,
saha tairmunibhiḥ sarvaistadā vyāsādibhirnṛpa.
4. kṣaṇena prekṣatām teṣām viśalyaḥ saḥ
abhavat tadā tam dṛṣṭvā vismitāḥ
sarve vāsudevapurógamāḥ saha taiḥ
munibhiḥ sarvaiḥ tadā vyāsādibhiḥ nṛpa
4. kṣaṇena teṣām prekṣatām saḥ viśalyaḥ tadā abhavat.

tam dṛṣṭvā vāsudevapurógamāḥ sarve saha taiḥ sarvaiḥ vyāsādibhiḥ munibhiḥ tadā vismitāḥ (abhavan).
4. In a moment, while they watched, he (Bhishma) then became free of arrows. O King, having witnessed this, all those present, led by Vasudeva (Krishna), along with all the sages (muni) such as Vyasa and others, were astonished.
संनिरुद्धस्तु तेनात्मा सर्वेष्वायतनेषु वै ।
जगाम भित्त्वा मूर्धानं दिवमभ्युत्पपात च ॥५॥
5. saṁniruddhastu tenātmā sarveṣvāyataneṣu vai ,
jagāma bhittvā mūrdhānaṁ divamabhyutpapāta ca.
5. saṃniruddhaḥ tu tena ātmā sarveṣu āyataneṣu vai
jagāma bhittvā mūrdhānam divam abhyutpapāta ca
5. ātmā tena sarveṣu āyataneṣu vai saṃniruddhaḥ tu
mūrdhānam bhittvā jagāma ca divam abhyutpapāta
5. But that self (ātman), having been completely restrained in all the sense-faculties, indeed, departed, piercing through the crown of the head, and ascended to the heavenly realm.
महोल्केव च भीष्मस्य मूर्धदेशाज्जनाधिप ।
निःसृत्याकाशमाविश्य क्षणेनान्तरधीयत ॥६॥
6. maholkeva ca bhīṣmasya mūrdhadeśājjanādhipa ,
niḥsṛtyākāśamāviśya kṣaṇenāntaradhīyata.
6. maholkā iva ca bhīṣmasya mūrdhadeśāt janādhipa
niḥsṛtya ākāśam āviśya kṣaṇena antaradhīyata
6. janādhipa ca bhīṣmasya mūrdhadeśāt maholkā iva
niḥsṛtya ākāśam āviśya kṣaṇena antaradhīyata
6. And like a great meteor, O ruler (janādhipa), from the crown of Bhishma's head, having emerged and entered the sky, it disappeared in an instant.
एवं स नृपशार्दूल नृपः शांतनवस्तदा ।
समयुज्यत लोकैः स्वैर्भरतानां कुलोद्वहः ॥७॥
7. evaṁ sa nṛpaśārdūla nṛpaḥ śāṁtanavastadā ,
samayujyata lokaiḥ svairbharatānāṁ kulodvahaḥ.
7. evam saḥ nṛpaśārdūla nṛpaḥ śāntanavaḥ tadā
samayujyata lokaiḥ svaiḥ bharatānām kulodvahaḥ
7. nṛpaśārdūla evam tadā saḥ nṛpaḥ śāntanavaḥ
bharatānām kulodvahaḥ svaiḥ lokaiḥ samayujyata
7. Thus, O tiger among kings (nṛpaśārdūla), that King, the son of Shantanu (Bhishma), the upholder of the Bharata lineage, was then united with his own realms (loka).
ततस्त्वादाय दारूणि गन्धांश्च विविधान्बहून् ।
चितां चक्रुर्महात्मानः पाण्डवा विदुरस्तथा ।
युयुत्सुश्चापि कौरव्यः प्रेक्षकास्त्वितरेऽभवन् ॥८॥
8. tatastvādāya dārūṇi gandhāṁśca vividhānbahūn ,
citāṁ cakrurmahātmānaḥ pāṇḍavā vidurastathā ,
yuyutsuścāpi kauravyaḥ prekṣakāstvitare'bhavan.
8. tataḥ tu ādāya dārūṇi gandhān ca
vividhān bahūn citām cakruḥ mahātmānaḥ
pāṇḍavāḥ viduraḥ tathā yuyutsuḥ ca
api kauravyaḥ prekṣakāḥ tu itare abhavan
8. tataḥ tu mahātmānaḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tathā
viduraḥ vividhān bahūn dārūṇi ca gandhān
ādāya citām cakruḥ ca api kauravyaḥ
yuyutsuḥ prekṣakāḥ tu itare abhavan
8. Thereafter, the great-souled Pandavas and Vidura, having gathered much various wood and fragrances, prepared a funeral pyre. Yuyutsu, the Kuru prince, also joined them, while the others remained as mere spectators.
युधिष्ठिरस्तु गाङ्गेयं विदुरश्च महामतिः ।
छादयामासतुरुभौ क्षौमैर्माल्यैश्च कौरवम् ॥९॥
9. yudhiṣṭhirastu gāṅgeyaṁ viduraśca mahāmatiḥ ,
chādayāmāsaturubhau kṣaumairmālyaiśca kauravam.
9. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tu gāṅgeyam viduraḥ ca mahāmatiḥ
chādayāmāsatuḥ ubhau kṣaumaiḥ mālyaiḥ ca kauravam

9. Yudhiṣṭhira and the great-minded Vidura both covered the Kuru elder, the son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma), with linen garments and garlands.
धारयामास तस्याथ युयुत्सुश्छत्रमुत्तमम् ।
चामरव्यजने शुभ्रे भीमसेनार्जुनावुभौ ।
उष्णीषे पर्यगृह्णीतां माद्रीपुत्रावुभौ तदा ॥१०॥
10. dhārayāmāsa tasyātha yuyutsuśchatramuttamam ,
cāmaravyajane śubhre bhīmasenārjunāvubhau ,
uṣṇīṣe paryagṛhṇītāṁ mādrīputrāvubhau tadā.
10. dhārayāmāsa tasya atha yuyutsuḥ
chatram uttamam cāmaravyajane śubhre
bhīmasenārjunau ubhau uṣṇīṣe
paryagṛhṇītām mādrīputrau ubhau tadā
10. atha yuyutsuḥ tasya uttamam chatram

10. Then Yuyutsu held his excellent umbrella for him. Both Bhīmasena and Arjuna held the two beautiful chowrie-fans, and then both sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva) held (his) two turbans.
स्त्रियः कौरवनाथस्य भीष्मं कुरुकुलोद्भवम् ।
तालवृन्तान्युपादाय पर्यवीजन्समन्ततः ॥११॥
11. striyaḥ kauravanāthasya bhīṣmaṁ kurukulodbhavam ,
tālavṛntānyupādāya paryavījansamantataḥ.
11. striyaḥ kauravanāthasya bhīṣmam kurukulodbhavam
tālavṛntāni upādāya paryavījan samantataḥ

11. The women, having taken up palm-leaf fans, fanned Bhīṣma, the lord of the Kauravas and born of the Kuru lineage, from all sides.
ततोऽस्य विधिवच्चक्रुः पितृमेधं महात्मनः ।
याजका जुहुवुश्चाग्निं जगुः सामानि सामगाः ॥१२॥
12. tato'sya vidhivaccakruḥ pitṛmedhaṁ mahātmanaḥ ,
yājakā juhuvuścāgniṁ jaguḥ sāmāni sāmagāḥ.
12. tataḥ asya vidhivat cakruḥ pitṛmedham mahātmanaḥ
yājakāḥ juhuvuḥ ca agnim jaguḥ sāmāni sāmagāḥ
12. tataḥ asya mahātmanaḥ pitṛmedham vidhivat cakruḥ
yājakāḥ ca agnim juhuvuḥ sāmagāḥ sāmāni jaguḥ
12. Then they performed his ancestral funeral rites (pitṛmedha) according to the sacred law for the great-souled one (mahātman). The priests offered oblations into the fire, and the Sāman singers chanted the Sāman melodies.
ततश्चन्दनकाष्ठैश्च तथा कालेयकैरपि ।
कालागरुप्रभृतिभिर्गन्धैश्चोच्चावचैस्तथा ॥१३॥
13. tataścandanakāṣṭhaiśca tathā kāleyakairapi ,
kālāgaruprabhṛtibhirgandhaiścoccāvacaistathā.
13. tataḥ candanakāṣṭhaiḥ ca tathā kāleyakaiḥ api
kālāgaruprabhṛtibhiḥ gandhaiḥ ca uccāvacaiḥ tathā
13. tataḥ candanakāṣṭhaiḥ ca tathā kāleyakaiḥ api
kālāgaruprabhṛtibhiḥ ca uccāvacaiḥ gandhaiḥ tathā
13. Then, with sandalwood logs, and similarly with kāleyaka and black agarwood along with various other fragrant substances, both costly and inexpensive.
समवच्छाद्य गाङ्गेयं प्रज्वाल्य च हुताशनम् ।
अपसव्यमकुर्वन्त धृतराष्ट्रमुखा नृपाः ॥१४॥
14. samavacchādya gāṅgeyaṁ prajvālya ca hutāśanam ,
apasavyamakurvanta dhṛtarāṣṭramukhā nṛpāḥ.
14. samavacchādya gāṅgeyam prajvālya ca hutāśanam
apasavyam akurvanta dhṛtarāṣṭramukhā nṛpāḥ
14. dhṛtarāṣṭramukhā nṛpāḥ gāṅgeyam samavacchādya

14. Having completely covered Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma) and ignited the sacred fire, the kings, led by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, performed the circumambulation in the anti-clockwise direction (apasavya).
संस्कृत्य च कुरुश्रेष्ठं गाङ्गेयं कुरुसत्तमाः ।
जग्मुर्भागीरथीतीरमृषिजुष्टं कुरूद्वहाः ॥१५॥
15. saṁskṛtya ca kuruśreṣṭhaṁ gāṅgeyaṁ kurusattamāḥ ,
jagmurbhāgīrathītīramṛṣijuṣṭaṁ kurūdvahāḥ.
15. saṃskṛtya ca kuruśreṣṭham gāṅgeyam kurusattamāḥ
jagmuḥ bhāgīrathītīram ṛṣijuṣṭam kurūdvahāḥ
15. kurusattamāḥ kurūdvahāḥ ca kuruśreṣṭham gāṅgeyam
saṃskṛtya ṛṣijuṣṭam bhāgīrathītīram jagmuḥ
15. And having performed the funerary rites for Gaṅgeya (Bhīṣma), the foremost of the Kurus, those best of the Kurus and leaders of the Kurus went to the bank of the Bhāgīrathī (Ganges), a place frequented by sages (muni).
अनुगम्यमाना व्यासेन नारदेनासितेन च ।
कृष्णेन भरतस्त्रीभिर्ये च पौराः समागताः ॥१६॥
16. anugamyamānā vyāsena nāradenāsitena ca ,
kṛṣṇena bharatastrībhirye ca paurāḥ samāgatāḥ.
16. anugamyamānāḥ vyāsena nāradena asitena ca
kṛṣṇena bharatastrībhiḥ ye ca paurāḥ samāgatāḥ
16. vyāsena nāradena asitena ca kṛṣṇena bharatastrībhiḥ

16. They (the kings) were being followed by Vyāsa, Nārada, Asita, Kṛṣṇa, the women of the Bharata lineage, and also by those citizens who had gathered.
उदकं चक्रिरे चैव गाङ्गेयस्य महात्मनः ।
विधिवत्क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठाः स च सर्वो जनस्तदा ॥१७॥
17. udakaṁ cakrire caiva gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
vidhivatkṣatriyaśreṣṭhāḥ sa ca sarvo janastadā.
17. udakam cakrire ca eva gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ
vidhivat kṣatriyaśreṣṭhāḥ saḥ ca sarvaḥ janaḥ tadā
17. tadā kṣatriyaśreṣṭhāḥ ca saḥ sarvaḥ janaḥ gāṅgeyasya
mahātmanaḥ udakam vidhivat ca eva cakrire
17. Then, the foremost among the kshatriyas and all those people duly performed the water offering ritual for the great-souled (mahātman) Gangeya (Bhishma).
ततो भागीरथी देवी तनयस्योदके कृते ।
उत्थाय सलिलात्तस्माद्रुदती शोकलालसा ॥१८॥
18. tato bhāgīrathī devī tanayasyodake kṛte ,
utthāya salilāttasmādrudatī śokalālasā.
18. tataḥ bhāgīrathī devī tanayasya udake kṛte
utthāya salilāt tasmāt rudatī śokalālasā
18. tataḥ tanayasya udake kṛte (sati) bhāgīrathī
devī tasmāt salilāt utthāya rudatī śokalālasā
18. Then, the goddess Bhagirathi, after the water ritual for her son was performed, rose from that water, weeping and deeply distressed by sorrow.
परिदेवयती तत्र कौरवानभ्यभाषत ।
निबोधत यथावृत्तमुच्यमानं मयानघाः ॥१९॥
19. paridevayatī tatra kauravānabhyabhāṣata ,
nibodhata yathāvṛttamucyamānaṁ mayānaghāḥ.
19. paridevayatī tatra kauravān abhyabhāṣata
nibodhata yathāvṛttam ucyamānam mayā anaghāḥ
19. tatra paridevayatī (sā) kauravān abhyabhāṣata
he anaghāḥ mayā ucyamānam yathāvṛttam nibodhata
19. Lamenting there, she addressed the Kauravas: "O blameless ones, listen to the true course of events as I relate them."
राजवृत्तेन संपन्नः प्रज्ञयाभिजनेन च ।
सत्कर्ता कुरुवृद्धानां पितृभक्तो दृढव्रतः ॥२०॥
20. rājavṛttena saṁpannaḥ prajñayābhijanena ca ,
satkartā kuruvṛddhānāṁ pitṛbhakto dṛḍhavrataḥ.
20. rājavṛttena sampannaḥ prajñayā abhijanena ca
satkartā kuruvṛddhānām pitṛbhaktaḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ
20. (saḥ) rājavṛttena prajñayā abhijanena ca sampannaḥ
kuruvṛddhānām satkartā pitṛbhaktaḥ dṛḍhavrataḥ
20. (He was) endowed with royal conduct, wisdom, and noble lineage, a respecter of the Kuru elders, devoted to his father, and resolute in his vows.
जामदग्न्येन रामेण पुरा यो न पराजितः ।
दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महावीर्यः स हतोऽद्य शिखण्डिना ॥२१॥
21. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa purā yo na parājitaḥ ,
divyairastrairmahāvīryaḥ sa hato'dya śikhaṇḍinā.
21. jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa purā yaḥ na parājitaḥ divyaiḥ
astraiḥ mahāvīryaḥ saḥ hataḥ adya śikhaṇḍinā
21. yaḥ purā jāmadagnyena rāmeṇa divyaiḥ astraiḥ na
parājitaḥ mahāvīryaḥ saḥ adya śikhaṇḍinā hataḥ
21. That immensely valorous one, who was never defeated in the past by Parashurama, the son of Jamadagni, even with divine weapons, has been slain today by Shikhandi.
अश्मसारमयं नूनं हृदयं मम पार्थिवाः ।
अपश्यन्त्याः प्रियं पुत्रं यत्र दीर्यति मेऽद्य वै ॥२२॥
22. aśmasāramayaṁ nūnaṁ hṛdayaṁ mama pārthivāḥ ,
apaśyantyāḥ priyaṁ putraṁ yatra dīryati me'dya vai.
22. aśmasāramayam nūnam hṛdayam mama pārthivāḥ
apaśyantyāḥ priyam putram yatra dīryati me adya vai
22. pārthivāḥ nūnam mama hṛdayam aśmasāramayam yatra

22. O kings, my heart must certainly be made of adamantine material, because even not seeing my dear son, it indeed breaks for me today.
समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं काशिपुर्यां स्वयंवरे ।
विजित्यैकरथेनाजौ कन्यास्ता यो जहार ह ॥२३॥
23. sametaṁ pārthivaṁ kṣatraṁ kāśipuryāṁ svayaṁvare ,
vijityaikarathenājau kanyāstā yo jahāra ha.
23. sametam pārthivam kṣatram kāśipuryām svayaṃvare
vijitya ekarathena ājau kanyāḥ tāḥ yaḥ jahāra ha
23. yaḥ kāśipuryām svayaṃvare sametam pārthivam kṣatram
ājau ekarathena vijitya tāḥ kanyāḥ ha jahāra
23. He who, with a single chariot, conquered the assembled royal warriors in battle at the svayaṃvara in the city of Kashi, and indeed carried away those maidens.
यस्य नास्ति बले तुल्यः पृथिव्यामपि कश्चन ।
हतं शिखण्डिना श्रुत्वा यन्न दीर्यति मे मनः ॥२४॥
24. yasya nāsti bale tulyaḥ pṛthivyāmapi kaścana ,
hataṁ śikhaṇḍinā śrutvā yanna dīryati me manaḥ.
24. yasya na asti bale tulyaḥ pṛthivyām api kaścana
hatam śikhaṇḍinā śrutvā yat na dīryati me manaḥ
24. yasya bale pṛthivyām api kaścana tulyaḥ na asti
śikhaṇḍinā hatam śrutvā yat me manaḥ na dīryati
24. My heart (manas) does not break, even after hearing that he, whose equal in strength exists nowhere on earth, has been slain by Shikhandi.
जामदग्न्यः कुरुक्षेत्रे युधि येन महात्मना ।
पीडितो नातियत्नेन निहतः स शिखण्डिना ॥२५॥
25. jāmadagnyaḥ kurukṣetre yudhi yena mahātmanā ,
pīḍito nātiyatnena nihataḥ sa śikhaṇḍinā.
25. jāmadagnyaḥ kurukṣetre yudhi yena mahātmanā
pīḍitaḥ na ati yatnena nihataḥ saḥ śikhaṇḍinā
25. saḥ mahātmanā yena kurukṣetre yudhi jāmadagnyaḥ
na ati yatnena pīḍitaḥ śikhaṇḍinā nihataḥ
25. That great-souled one, by whom the son of Jamadagni (Parashurama) was tormented in battle in Kurukshetra without much effort, was himself killed by Shikhandin.
एवंविधं बहु तदा विलपन्तीं महानदीम् ।
आश्वासयामास तदा साम्ना दामोदरो विभुः ॥२६॥
26. evaṁvidhaṁ bahu tadā vilapantīṁ mahānadīm ,
āśvāsayāmāsa tadā sāmnā dāmodaro vibhuḥ.
26. evaṃvidham bahu tadā vilapantīm mahānadīm
āśvāsayāmāsa tadā sāmnā dāmodaraḥ vibhuḥ
26. tadā dāmodaraḥ vibhuḥ evaṃvidham bahu
vilapantīm mahānadīm tadā sāmnā āśvāsayāmāsa
26. Then the Lord (vibhuḥ), Damodara (Kṛṣṇa), comforted the great river (Gaṅgā), who was lamenting greatly in such a manner, with gentle words.
समाश्वसिहि भद्रे त्वं मा शुचः शुभदर्शने ।
गतः स परमां सिद्धिं तव पुत्रो न संशयः ॥२७॥
27. samāśvasihi bhadre tvaṁ mā śucaḥ śubhadarśane ,
gataḥ sa paramāṁ siddhiṁ tava putro na saṁśayaḥ.
27. samāśvasihi bhadre tvam mā śucaḥ śubhadarśane
gataḥ saḥ paramām siddhim tava putraḥ na saṃśayaḥ
27. bhadre śubhadarśane tvam samāśvasihi mā śucaḥ
tava putraḥ saḥ paramām siddhim gataḥ na saṃśayaḥ
27. O blessed one, O beautiful-eyed one, be comforted! Do not grieve. Your son has undoubtedly attained the supreme liberation (siddhi).
वसुरेष महातेजाः शापदोषेण शोभने ।
मनुष्यतामनुप्राप्तो नैनं शोचितुमर्हसि ॥२८॥
28. vasureṣa mahātejāḥ śāpadoṣeṇa śobhane ,
manuṣyatāmanuprāpto nainaṁ śocitumarhasi.
28. vasuḥ eṣaḥ mahātejāḥ śāpadoṣeṇa śobhane
manuṣyatām anuprāptaḥ na enam śocitum arhasi
28. śobhane eṣaḥ mahātejāḥ vasuḥ śāpadoṣeṇa
manuṣyatām anuprāptaḥ enam śocitum na arhasi
28. O beautiful one, this great-splendored one was a Vasu, who attained the human state due to the flaw of a curse. You ought not to grieve for him.
स एष क्षत्रधर्मेण युध्यमानो रणाजिरे ।
धनंजयेन निहतो नैष नुन्नः शिखण्डिना ॥२९॥
29. sa eṣa kṣatradharmeṇa yudhyamāno raṇājire ,
dhanaṁjayena nihato naiṣa nunnaḥ śikhaṇḍinā.
29. saḥ eṣaḥ kṣatradharmeṇa yudhyamānaḥ raṇājire
dhanañjayena nihataḥ na eṣaḥ nunnaḥ śikhaṇḍinā
29. eṣaḥ saḥ kṣatradharmeṇa raṇājire yudhyamānaḥ
dhanañjayena nihataḥ eṣaḥ śikhaṇḍinā na nunnaḥ
29. This very one, fighting on the battlefield in accordance with the warrior's intrinsic nature (kṣatra-dharma), was struck down by Dhanañjaya; he was not pushed back by Śikhaṇḍin.
भीष्मं हि कुरुशार्दूलमुद्यतेषुं महारणे ।
न शक्तः संयुगे हन्तुं साक्षादपि शतक्रतुः ॥३०॥
30. bhīṣmaṁ hi kuruśārdūlamudyateṣuṁ mahāraṇe ,
na śaktaḥ saṁyuge hantuṁ sākṣādapi śatakratuḥ.
30. bhīṣmam hi kuruśārdūlam udyateṣum mahāraṇe na
śaktaḥ saṃyuge hantum sākṣāt api śatakratuḥ
30. hi śatakratuḥ api sākṣāt mahāraṇe saṃyuge
udyateṣum kuruśārdūlam bhīṣmam hantum na śaktaḥ
30. Indeed, even Śatakratu (Indra) himself would not be able to kill Bhishma, the tiger among the Kurus, who held his arrows ready, in the great battle.
स्वच्छन्देन सुतस्तुभ्यं गतः स्वर्गं शुभानने ।
न शक्ताः स्युर्निहन्तुं हि रणे तं सर्वदेवताः ॥३१॥
31. svacchandena sutastubhyaṁ gataḥ svargaṁ śubhānane ,
na śaktāḥ syurnihantuṁ hi raṇe taṁ sarvadevatāḥ.
31. svacchandena sutaḥ tubhyam gataḥ svargam śubhānanā
na śaktāḥ syuḥ nihantum hi raṇe tam sarvadevatāḥ
31. śubhānanā tubhyam sutaḥ svacchandena svargam gataḥ
hi sarvadevatāḥ tam raṇe nihantum na śaktāḥ syuḥ
31. O beautiful-faced one, your son has gone to heaven of his own accord; indeed, all the gods would not have been able to kill him in battle.
तस्मान्मा त्वं सरिच्छ्रेष्ठे शोचस्व कुरुनन्दनम् ।
वसूनेष गतो देवि पुत्रस्ते विज्वरा भव ॥३२॥
32. tasmānmā tvaṁ saricchreṣṭhe śocasva kurunandanam ,
vasūneṣa gato devi putraste vijvarā bhava.
32. tasmāt mā tvam saricchreṣṭhe śocasva kurunandanam
vasūn eṣaḥ gataḥ devi putraḥ te vijvarā bhava
32. tasmāt saricchreṣṭhe tvam kurunandanam mā śocasva
devi te putraḥ eṣaḥ vasūn gataḥ vijvarā bhava
32. Therefore, O most excellent of rivers, do not grieve for the delight of the Kurus. O goddess, your son has attained the Vasus; be free from sorrow.
इत्युक्ता सा तु कृष्णेन व्यासेन च सरिद्वरा ।
त्यक्त्वा शोकं महाराज स्वं वार्यवततार ह ॥३३॥
33. ityuktā sā tu kṛṣṇena vyāsena ca saridvarā ,
tyaktvā śokaṁ mahārāja svaṁ vāryavatatāra ha.
33. iti uktā sā tu kṛṣṇena vyāsena ca saridvarā
tyaktvā śokaṃ mahārāja svaṃ vāri avatatāra ha
33. mahārāja sā saridvarā kṛṣṇena ca vyāsena iti
uktā śokaṃ tyaktvā svaṃ vāri avatatāra ha
33. O great king (mahārāja), thus addressed by Kṛṣṇa and Vyāsa, that best of rivers, having abandoned her sorrow, indeed descended with her own waters.
सत्कृत्य ते तां सरितं ततः कृष्णमुखा नृपाः ।
अनुज्ञातास्तया सर्वे न्यवर्तन्त जनाधिपाः ॥३४॥
34. satkṛtya te tāṁ saritaṁ tataḥ kṛṣṇamukhā nṛpāḥ ,
anujñātāstayā sarve nyavartanta janādhipāḥ.
34. satkṛtya te tāṃ saritaṃ tataḥ kṛṣṇamukhāḥ nṛpāḥ
anujñātāḥ tayā sarve nyavartanta janādhipāḥ
34. te sarve nṛpāḥ janādhipāḥ kṛṣṇamukhāḥ tāṃ
saritaṃ satkṛtya tataḥ tayā anujñātāḥ nyavartanta
34. Having honored that river, then all those kings and rulers of men, led by Kṛṣṇa, and permitted by her, returned.
