वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः शांतनवं भीष्मं प्राञ्जलिर्धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
सह सर्वैर्महीपालैरिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ śāṁtanavaṁ bhīṣmaṁ prāñjalirdhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
saha sarvairmahīpālairidaṁ vacanamabravīt.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), with folded hands and accompanied by all the kings, spoke these words to Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu.
ऋते सेनाप्रणेतारं पृतना सुमहत्यपि ।
दीर्यते युद्धमासाद्य पिपीलिकपुटं यथा ॥२॥
2. ṛte senāpraṇetāraṁ pṛtanā sumahatyapi ,
dīryate yuddhamāsādya pipīlikapuṭaṁ yathā.

dīryate yuddham āsādya pipīlikapuṭam yathā

2. An army, even if very large, without a commander, when it encounters battle, scatters like an anthill.
न हि जातु द्वयोर्बुद्धिः समा भवति कर्हिचित् ।
शौर्यं च नाम नेतॄणां स्पर्धते च परस्परम् ॥३॥
3. na hi jātu dvayorbuddhiḥ samā bhavati karhicit ,
śauryaṁ ca nāma netṝṇāṁ spardhate ca parasparam.
3. na hi jātu dvayoḥ buddhiḥ samā bhavati karhicit
śauryam ca nāma netṝṇām spardhate ca parasparam
3. hi jātu karhicit dvayoḥ buddhiḥ samā na bhavati

3. Indeed, the intellect of two individuals is never entirely the same. And the valor of leaders always competes with one another.
श्रूयते च महाप्राज्ञ हैहयानमितौजसः ।
अभ्ययुर्ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे समुच्छ्रितकुशध्वजाः ॥४॥
4. śrūyate ca mahāprājña haihayānamitaujasaḥ ,
abhyayurbrāhmaṇāḥ sarve samucchritakuśadhvajāḥ.

4. mahāprājña,
ca śrūyate [yat] sarve brāhmaṇāḥ samucchritakuśadhvajāḥ anamitaujasaḥ haihayān abhyayuḥ
4. O greatly wise one, it is also heard that all the Brahmins, bearing their kusha grass banners held high, advanced against the Haihayas of unyielding might.
तानन्वयुस्तदा वैश्याः शूद्राश्चैव पितामह ।
एकतस्तु त्रयो वर्णा एकतः क्षत्रियर्षभाः ॥५॥
5. tānanvayustadā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāścaiva pitāmaha ,
ekatastu trayo varṇā ekataḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ.
5. tān anvayuḥ tadā vaiśyāḥ śūdrāḥ ca eva pitāmaha
ekataḥ tu trayaḥ varṇāḥ ekataḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ
5. pitāmaha,
tadā vaiśyāḥ ca eva śūdrāḥ tān anvayuḥ tu ekataḥ trayaḥ varṇāḥ [āsan],
ekataḥ kṣatriyarṣabhāḥ [āsan]
5. Then, O grandfather, the Vaishyas and even the Shudras followed them (the Brahmins). Thus, on one side were the three social classes, and on the other side were the best of the Kshatriyas.
ते स्म युद्धेष्वभज्यन्त त्रयो वर्णाः पुनः पुनः ।
क्षत्रियास्तु जयन्त्येव बहुलं चैकतो बलम् ॥६॥
6. te sma yuddheṣvabhajyanta trayo varṇāḥ punaḥ punaḥ ,
kṣatriyāstu jayantyeva bahulaṁ caikato balam.
6. te sma yuddheṣu abhajyanta trayaḥ varṇāḥ punaḥ punaḥ
kṣatriyāḥ tu jayanti eva bahulam ca ekataḥ balam
6. te trayaḥ varṇāḥ yuddheṣu punaḥ punaḥ abhajyanta sma tu
kṣatriyāḥ eva jayanti ca ekataḥ bahulam balam [āsīt]
6. Those three social classes were repeatedly defeated in battles. But the Kshatriyas alone were victorious, and on their side was abundant strength.
ततस्ते क्षत्रियानेव पप्रच्छुर्द्विजसत्तमाः ।
तेभ्यः शशंसुर्धर्मज्ञा याथातथ्यं पितामह ॥७॥
7. tataste kṣatriyāneva papracchurdvijasattamāḥ ,
tebhyaḥ śaśaṁsurdharmajñā yāthātathyaṁ pitāmaha.
7. tatas te kṣatriyān eva papracchuḥ dvijasattamāḥ
tebhyaḥ śaśaṃsuḥ dharmajñāḥ yāthātathyam pitāmaha
7. pitāmaha tatas dvijasattamāḥ te kṣatriyān eva
papracchuḥ dharmajñāḥ tebhyaḥ yāthātathyam śaśaṃsuḥ
7. O grandfather, then those excellent Brahmins asked only the kṣatriyas. The kṣatriyas, who understood natural law (dharma), then revealed the true state of affairs to them.
वयमेकस्य शृणुमो महाबुद्धिमतो रणे ।
भवन्तस्तु पृथक्सर्वे स्वबुद्धिवशवर्तिनः ॥८॥
8. vayamekasya śṛṇumo mahābuddhimato raṇe ,
bhavantastu pṛthaksarve svabuddhivaśavartinaḥ.
8. vayam ekasya śṛṇumaḥ mahābuddhimataḥ raṇe
bhavantaḥ tu pṛthak sarve svabuddhivaśavartinaḥ
8. vayam ekasya mahābuddhimataḥ raṇe śṛṇumaḥ
bhavantaḥ tu sarve pṛthak svabuddhivaśavartinaḥ
8. We listen to one who is greatly intelligent in battle, but you all individually act according to your own intellects.
ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाश्चक्रुरेकं सेनापतिं द्विजम् ।
नयेषु कुशलं शूरमजयन्क्षत्रियांस्ततः ॥९॥
9. tataste brāhmaṇāścakrurekaṁ senāpatiṁ dvijam ,
nayeṣu kuśalaṁ śūramajayankṣatriyāṁstataḥ.
9. tatas te brāhmaṇāḥ cakruḥ ekam senāpatim dvijam
nayeṣu kuśalam śūram ajayan kṣatriyān tatas
9. tatas te brāhmaṇāḥ nayeṣu kuśalam śūram ekam
dvijam senāpatim cakruḥ tatas kṣatriyān ajayan
9. Then those Brahmins appointed one Brahmin, who was skilled in strategies and brave, as their commander. Thereafter, they conquered the kṣatriyas.
एवं ये कुशलं शूरं हिते स्थितमकल्मषम् ।
सेनापतिं प्रकुर्वन्ति ते जयन्ति रणे रिपून् ॥१०॥
10. evaṁ ye kuśalaṁ śūraṁ hite sthitamakalmaṣam ,
senāpatiṁ prakurvanti te jayanti raṇe ripūn.
10. evam ye kuśalam śūram hite sthitam akalmaṣam
senāpatim prakurvanti te jayanti raṇe ripūn
10. evam ye kuśalam śūram hite sthitam akalmaṣam
senāpatim prakurvanti te raṇe ripūn jayanti
10. In this way, those who appoint a commander who is skilled, brave, steadfast in welfare, and blameless—they conquer enemies in battle.
भवानुशनसा तुल्यो हितैषी च सदा मम ।
असंहार्यः स्थितो धर्मे स नः सेनापतिर्भव ॥११॥
11. bhavānuśanasā tulyo hitaiṣī ca sadā mama ,
asaṁhāryaḥ sthito dharme sa naḥ senāpatirbhava.
11. bhavān uśanasā tulyaḥ hitaiṣī ca sadā mama
asaṃhāryaḥ sthitaḥ dharme saḥ naḥ senāpatiḥ bhava
11. bhavān uśanasā tulyaḥ ca sadā mama hitaiṣī (asi).
(you) asaṃhāryaḥ dharme sthitaḥ (asi).
saḥ naḥ senāpatiḥ bhava.
11. You are equal to Uśanas and always my well-wisher. Unassailable and firmly established in righteousness (dharma), be our commander-in-chief.
रश्मीवतामिवादित्यो वीरुधामिव चन्द्रमाः ।
कुबेर इव यक्षाणां मरुतामिव वासवः ॥१२॥
12. raśmīvatāmivādityo vīrudhāmiva candramāḥ ,
kubera iva yakṣāṇāṁ marutāmiva vāsavaḥ.
12. raśmīvatām iva ādityaḥ vīrudhām iva candramāḥ
kuberaḥ iva yakṣāṇām marutām iva vāsavaḥ
12. ādityaḥ raśmīvatām iva,
candramāḥ vīrudhām iva,
kuberaḥ yakṣāṇām iva,
vāsavaḥ marutām iva (asti).
12. Just as the Sun is among the luminous bodies, and the Moon among plants, as Kubera is among the yakṣas, and Vāsava (Indra) among the maruts (wind-gods)...
पर्वतानां यथा मेरुः सुपर्णः पततामिव ।
कुमार इव भूतानां वसूनामिव हव्यवाट् ॥१३॥
13. parvatānāṁ yathā meruḥ suparṇaḥ patatāmiva ,
kumāra iva bhūtānāṁ vasūnāmiva havyavāṭ.
13. parvatānām yathā meruḥ suparṇaḥ patatām iva
kumāraḥ iva bhūtānām vasūnām iva havyavāṭ
13. meruḥ parvatānām yathā,
suparṇaḥ patatām iva,
kumāraḥ bhūtānām iva,
havyavāṭ vasūnām iva (asti).
13. As Meru is among mountains, Suparṇa (Garuḍa) among flying creatures, Kumāra (Kārtikeya) among all beings, and Havyavāṭ (Agni) among the Vasus...
भवता हि वयं गुप्ताः शक्रेणेव दिवौकसः ।
अनाधृष्या भविष्यामस्त्रिदशानामपि ध्रुवम् ॥१४॥
14. bhavatā hi vayaṁ guptāḥ śakreṇeva divaukasaḥ ,
anādhṛṣyā bhaviṣyāmastridaśānāmapi dhruvam.
14. bhavatā hi vayam guptāḥ śakreṇa iva divaukasaḥ
anādhṛṣyāḥ bhaviṣyāmaḥ tridaśānām api dhruvam
14. hi vayam bhavatā guptāḥ (santo),
śakreṇa divaukasaḥ iva,
tridaśānām api anādhṛṣyāḥ dhruvam bhaviṣyāmaḥ.
14. Indeed, protected by you, just as the gods (divaukasaḥ) are by Śakra (Indra), we shall certainly be unassailable even by the thirty gods (tridaśānām).
प्रयातु नो भवानग्रे देवानामिव पावकिः ।
वयं त्वामनुयास्यामः सौरभेया इवर्षभम् ॥१५॥
15. prayātu no bhavānagre devānāmiva pāvakiḥ ,
vayaṁ tvāmanuyāsyāmaḥ saurabheyā ivarṣabham.
15. prayātu naḥ bhavān agre devānām iva pāvakiḥ |
vayam tvām anuyāsyāmaḥ saurabheyāḥ iva ṛṣabham
15. bhavān naḥ agre prayātu devānām pāvakiḥ iva
vayam saurabheyāḥ ṛṣabham iva tvām anuyāsyāmaḥ
15. May your esteemed self proceed ahead of us, just as Kartikeya leads the gods. We shall follow you, like cows follow a bull.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमेतन्महाबाहो यथा वदसि भारत ।
यथैव हि भवन्तो मे तथैव मम पाण्डवाः ॥१६॥
16. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evametanmahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata ,
yathaiva hi bhavanto me tathaiva mama pāṇḍavāḥ.
16. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca | evam etat mahābāho yathā vadasi bhārata
| yathā eva hi bhavantaḥ me tathā eva mama pāṇḍavāḥ
16. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca mahābāho bhārata,
etat evam yathā vadasi yathā eva hi bhavantaḥ me,
tathā eva pāṇḍavāḥ mama (santi)
16. Bhishma said: 'O mighty-armed one, O descendant of Bharata, this is exactly as you state. Just as you are dear to me, so too are the Pandavas dear to me.'
अपि चैव मया श्रेयो वाच्यं तेषां नराधिप ।
योद्धव्यं तु तवार्थाय यथा स समयः कृतः ॥१७॥
17. api caiva mayā śreyo vācyaṁ teṣāṁ narādhipa ,
yoddhavyaṁ tu tavārthāya yathā sa samayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
17. api ca eva mayā śreyaḥ vācyam teṣām narādhipa |
yoddhavyam tu tava arthāya yathā saḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ
17. narādhipa,
api ca eva mayā teṣām śreyaḥ vācyam tu yathā saḥ samayaḥ kṛtaḥ,
(tathā) tava arthāya yoddhavyam
17. Moreover, O lord of men, I must advise them on what is beneficial. However, I must fight for your cause, as that is the agreement (samaya) I have made.
न तु पश्यामि योद्धारमात्मनः सदृशं भुवि ।
ऋते तस्मान्नरव्याघ्रात्कुन्तीपुत्राद्धनंजयात् ॥१८॥
18. na tu paśyāmi yoddhāramātmanaḥ sadṛśaṁ bhuvi ,
ṛte tasmānnaravyāghrātkuntīputrāddhanaṁjayāt.
18. na tu paśyāmi yoddhāram ātmanaḥ sadṛśam bhuvi |
ṛte tasmāt naravyāghrāt kuntīputrāt dhanaṃjayāt
18. tu (aham) ātmanaḥ sadṛśam yoddhāram bhuvi na paśyāmi
tasmāt naravyāghrāt kuntīputrāt dhanaṃjayāt ṛte
18. But I do not see any warrior on earth who is my equal (ātman), except for that tiger among men, Kunti's son Dhananjaya.
स हि वेद महाबाहुर्दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः ।
न तु मां विवृतो युद्धे जातु युध्येत पाण्डवः ॥१९॥
19. sa hi veda mahābāhurdivyānyastrāṇi sarvaśaḥ ,
na tu māṁ vivṛto yuddhe jātu yudhyeta pāṇḍavaḥ.
19. saḥ hi veda mahābāhuḥ divyāni astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ
na tu mām vivṛtaḥ yuddhe jātu yudhyeta pāṇḍavaḥ
19. saḥ mahābāhuḥ hi divyāni astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ veda
tu pāṇḍavaḥ mām vivṛtaḥ yuddhe jātu na yudhyeta
19. Indeed, that mighty-armed one knows all divine weapons completely. But the son of Pāṇḍu would never fight me openly in battle.
अहं स च क्षणेनैव निर्मनुष्यमिदं जगत् ।
कुर्यां शस्त्रबलेनैव ससुरासुरराक्षसम् ॥२०॥
20. ahaṁ sa ca kṣaṇenaiva nirmanuṣyamidaṁ jagat ,
kuryāṁ śastrabalenaiva sasurāsurarākṣasam.
20. aham saḥ ca kṣaṇena eva nirmanuṣyam idam jagat
kuryām śastrabalena eva sasurāsurarākṣasam
20. aham ca saḥ eva kṣaṇena idam jagat sasurāsurarākṣasam
eva śastrabalena nirmanuṣyam kuryām
20. In a mere moment, I and he, solely by the power of weapons, could render this entire world—including its gods, asuras, and rākṣasas—devoid of human beings.
न त्वेवोत्सादनीया मे पाण्डोः पुत्रा नराधिप ।
तस्माद्योधान्हनिष्यामि प्रयोगेणायुतं सदा ॥२१॥
21. na tvevotsādanīyā me pāṇḍoḥ putrā narādhipa ,
tasmādyodhānhaniṣyāmi prayogeṇāyutaṁ sadā.
21. na tu eva utsādanīyāḥ me pāṇḍoḥ putrāḥ narādhipa
tasmāt yodhān haniṣyāmi prayogeṇa ayutam sadā
21. narādhipa tu eva me pāṇḍoḥ putrāḥ na utsādanīyāḥ
tasmāt (aham) sadā prayogeṇa ayutam yodhān haniṣyāmi
21. However, O king of men, Pāṇḍu's sons must certainly not be eliminated by me. Therefore, I will always slay ten thousand warriors through my skill.
एवमेषां करिष्यामि निधनं कुरुनन्दन ।
न चेत्ते मां हनिष्यन्ति पूर्वमेव समागमे ॥२२॥
22. evameṣāṁ kariṣyāmi nidhanaṁ kurunandana ,
na cette māṁ haniṣyanti pūrvameva samāgame.
22. evam eṣām kariṣyāmi nidhanam kurunandana na
cet te mām haniṣyanti pūrvam eva samāgame
22. kurunandana evam eṣām nidhanam kariṣyāmi
cet te pūrvam eva samāgame mām na haniṣyanti
22. Thus, O delight of the Kurus, I will bring about their destruction, provided they do not kill me first in the encounter.
सेनापतिस्त्वहं राजन्समयेनापरेण ते ।
भविष्यामि यथाकामं तन्मे श्रोतुमिहार्हसि ॥२३॥
23. senāpatistvahaṁ rājansamayenāpareṇa te ,
bhaviṣyāmi yathākāmaṁ tanme śrotumihārhasi.
23. senāpatiḥ tu aham rājan samayena apareṇa te
bhaviṣyāmi yathākāmam tat me śrotum iha arhasi
23. rājan aham tu te samayena apareṇa yathākāmam
senāpatiḥ bhaviṣyāmi tat iha me śrotum arhasi
23. O King, I will indeed become your commander at a later time, as you wish. You should hear that from me now.
कर्णो वा युध्यतां पूर्वमहं वा पृथिवीपते ।
स्पर्धते हि सदात्यर्थं सूतपुत्रो मया रणे ॥२४॥
24. karṇo vā yudhyatāṁ pūrvamahaṁ vā pṛthivīpate ,
spardhate hi sadātyarthaṁ sūtaputro mayā raṇe.
24. karṇaḥ vā yudhyatām pūrvam aham vā pṛthivīpate
spardhate hi sadā atyartham sūtaputraḥ mayā raṇe
24. pṛthivīpate karṇaḥ vā aham vā pūrvam yudhyatām
hi sūtaputraḥ sadā atyartham mayā raṇe spardhate
24. O lord of the earth, let either Karṇa or I fight first, for the Sūtaputra always competes greatly with me in battle.
कर्ण उवाच ।
नाहं जीवति गाङ्गेये योत्स्ये राजन्कथंचन ।
हते भीष्मे तु योत्स्यामि सह गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥२५॥
25. karṇa uvāca ,
nāhaṁ jīvati gāṅgeye yotsye rājankathaṁcana ,
hate bhīṣme tu yotsyāmi saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā.
25. karṇaḥ uvāca na aham jīvati gāṅgeye yotsye rājan
kathaṃcana hate bhīṣme tu yotsyāmi saha gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
25. karṇaḥ uvāca rājan aham gāṅgeye jīvati kathaṃcana na
yotsye tu bhīṣme hate gāṇḍīvadhanvanā saha yotsyāmi
25. Karṇa said: 'O King, I will not fight at all while Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma) is alive. However, when Bhīṣma is killed, I will fight alongside the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna).'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः सेनापतिं चक्रे विधिवद्भूरिदक्षिणम् ।
धृतराष्ट्रात्मजो भीष्मं सोऽभिषिक्तो व्यरोचत ॥२६॥
26. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ senāpatiṁ cakre vidhivadbhūridakṣiṇam ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajo bhīṣmaṁ so'bhiṣikto vyarocata.
26. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ senāpatim cakre vidhivāt
bhūridakṣiṇam dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajaḥ bhīṣmam saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ vyarocata
26. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrātmajaḥ vidhivāt
bhūridakṣiṇam bhīṣmam senāpatim cakre saḥ abhiṣiktaḥ vyarocata
26. Vaiśampāyana said: Then the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra appointed Bhīṣma as commander, performing the ceremony with abundant gifts. Having been consecrated, he shone splendidly.
ततो भेरीश्च शङ्खांश्च शतशश्चैव पुष्करान् ।
वादयामासुरव्यग्राः पुरुषा राजशासनात् ॥२७॥
27. tato bherīśca śaṅkhāṁśca śataśaścaiva puṣkarān ,
vādayāmāsuravyagrāḥ puruṣā rājaśāsanāt.
27. tataḥ bherīḥ ca śaṅkhān ca śataśaḥ ca eva
puṣkarān vādayāmāsuḥ avyagrāḥ puruṣāḥ rājaśāsanāt
27. tataḥ rājaśāsanāt avyagrāḥ puruṣāḥ bherīḥ ca
śaṅkhān ca śataśaḥ ca eva puṣkarān vādayāmāsuḥ
27. Then, unperturbed men, by the king's command, sounded hundreds of kettle-drums, conches, and various other drums.
सिंहनादाश्च विविधा वाहनानां च निस्वनाः ।
प्रादुरासन्ननभ्रे च वर्षं रुधिरकर्दमम् ॥२८॥
28. siṁhanādāśca vividhā vāhanānāṁ ca nisvanāḥ ,
prādurāsannanabhre ca varṣaṁ rudhirakardamam.
28. siṃhanādāḥ ca vividhāḥ vāhanānām ca nisvanāḥ
prādurāsan anabhre ca varṣam rudhirakardamam
28. vividhāḥ siṃhanādāḥ ca vāhanānām ca nisvanāḥ
prādurāsan ca anabhre rudhirakardamam varṣam
28. Various lion's roars and the noises of conveyances appeared. And in the cloudless sky, there was a rain muddy with blood.
निर्घाताः पृथिवीकम्पा गजबृंहितनिस्वनाः ।
आसंश्च सर्वयोधानां पातयन्तो मनांस्युत ॥२९॥
29. nirghātāḥ pṛthivīkampā gajabṛṁhitanisvanāḥ ,
āsaṁśca sarvayodhānāṁ pātayanto manāṁsyuta.
29. nirghātāḥ pṛthivīkampāḥ gajabṛṃhitanisvanāḥ
āsan ca sarvayodhānām pātayantaḥ manāṁsi uta
29. nirghātāḥ pṛthivīkampāḥ gajabṛṃhitanisvanāḥ
uta ca sarvayodhānām manāṁsi pātayantaḥ āsan
29. Thunderbolts, earthquakes, and the trumpeting sounds of elephants occurred, unsettling the minds of all warriors.
वाचश्चाप्यशरीरिण्यो दिवश्चोल्काः प्रपेदिरे ।
शिवाश्च भयवेदिन्यो नेदुर्दीप्तस्वरा भृशम् ॥३०॥
30. vācaścāpyaśarīriṇyo divaścolkāḥ prapedire ,
śivāśca bhayavedinyo nedurdīptasvarā bhṛśam.

30. And disembodied voices, along with meteors, fell from the sky. And jackals, portending fear, cried out very loudly with fierce sounds.
सेनापत्ये यदा राजा गाङ्गेयमभिषिक्तवान् ।
तदैतान्युग्ररूपाणि अभवञ्शतशो नृप ॥३१॥
31. senāpatye yadā rājā gāṅgeyamabhiṣiktavān ,
tadaitānyugrarūpāṇi abhavañśataśo nṛpa.

31. O King (nṛpa), when the monarch consecrated Gaṅgeya (gāṅgeya) as the commander-in-chief, then hundreds of these terrible forms (ugrarūpāṇi) appeared.
ततः सेनापतिं कृत्वा भीष्मं परबलार्दनम् ।
वाचयित्वा द्विजश्रेष्ठान्निष्कैर्गोभिश्च भूरिशः ॥३२॥
32. tataḥ senāpatiṁ kṛtvā bhīṣmaṁ parabalārdanam ,
vācayitvā dvijaśreṣṭhānniṣkairgobhiśca bhūriśaḥ.

vācayitvā dvijaśreṣṭhān niṣkaiḥ gobhiḥ ca bhūriśaḥ

32. Then, having appointed Bhīṣma, the destroyer of enemy forces, as the commander-in-chief, and having caused the best among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭhān) to pronounce auspicious words with abundant gold ornaments and cows...
वर्धमानो जयाशीर्भिर्निर्ययौ सैनिकैर्वृतः ।
आपगेयं पुरस्कृत्य भ्रातृभिः सहितस्तदा ।
स्कन्धावारेण महता कुरुक्षेत्रं जगाम ह ॥३३॥
33. vardhamāno jayāśīrbhirniryayau sainikairvṛtaḥ ,
āpageyaṁ puraskṛtya bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitastadā ,
skandhāvāreṇa mahatā kurukṣetraṁ jagāma ha.

skandhāvāreṇa kurukṣetram jagāma ha
33. Then, being magnified by blessings for victory, he departed, surrounded by his soldiers. Placing Āpageya (āpageyam), Bhīṣma, at the forefront and accompanied by his brothers, he indeed went to Kurukṣetra with a vast encampment (skandhāvāreṇa).
परिक्रम्य कुरुक्षेत्रं कर्णेन सह कौरवः ।
शिबिरं मापयामास समे देशे नराधिपः ॥३४॥
34. parikramya kurukṣetraṁ karṇena saha kauravaḥ ,
śibiraṁ māpayāmāsa same deśe narādhipaḥ.

34. The Kaurava (kauravaḥ) king (narādhipaḥ), accompanied by Karṇa, having traversed Kurukṣetra, then had the camp (śibiram) measured out on an even piece of land.
मधुरानूषरे देशे प्रभूतयवसेन्धने ।
यथैव हास्तिनपुरं तद्वच्छिबिरमाबभौ ॥३५॥

yathaiva hāstinapuraṁ tadvacchibiramābabhau.

35. In a pleasant and fertile land, rich in grass and fuel, the camp appeared just like Hastinapura.
