जनमेजय उवाच ।
वनवासं गते विप्र धृतराष्ट्रे महीपतौ ।
सभार्ये नृपशार्दूले वध्वा कुन्त्या समन्विते ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
vanavāsaṁ gate vipra dhṛtarāṣṭre mahīpatau ,
sabhārye nṛpaśārdūle vadhvā kuntyā samanvite.

1. Janamejaya said: O Brāhmaṇa, when King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, a tiger among kings, had gone to forest exile with his wife, and was accompanied by Kuntī, his daughter-in-law,
विदुरे चापि संसिद्धे धर्मराजं व्यपाश्रिते ।
वसत्सु पाण्डुपुत्रेषु सर्वेष्वाश्रममण्डले ॥२॥
2. vidure cāpi saṁsiddhe dharmarājaṁ vyapāśrite ,
vasatsu pāṇḍuputreṣu sarveṣvāśramamaṇḍale.
2. vidure ca api saṃsiddhe dharmarājam vyapāśrite
vasatsu pāṇḍuputreṣu sarveṣu āśramamaṇḍale
2. and when Vidura, having achieved spiritual perfection (siddhi), had taken refuge with the king of (dharma), (Yudhiṣṭhira), and all the sons of Pāṇḍu were dwelling in the hermitage region.
यत्तदाश्चर्यमिति वै करिष्यामीत्युवाच ह ।
व्यासः परमतेजस्वी महर्षिस्तद्वदस्व मे ॥३॥
3. yattadāścaryamiti vai kariṣyāmītyuvāca ha ,
vyāsaḥ paramatejasvī maharṣistadvadasva me.
3. yat tat āścaryam iti vai kariṣyāmi iti uvāca ha
vyāsaḥ paramatejasvī maharṣiḥ tat vadasva me

3. Please tell me about that wonderful thing which the immensely glorious great sage Vyasa declared, saying, 'I will do it!'
वनवासे च कौरव्यः कियन्तं कालमच्युतः ।
युधिष्ठिरो नरपतिर्न्यवसत्सजनो द्विज ॥४॥
4. vanavāse ca kauravyaḥ kiyantaṁ kālamacyutaḥ ,
yudhiṣṭhiro narapatirnyavasatsajano dvija.
4. vanavāse ca kauravyaḥ kiyantam kālam acyutaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ narapatiḥ nyavasat sajanaḥ dvija

4. And, O twice-born (dvija), for how long did the Kuru prince, the infallible (acyuta) Yudhishthira, the king, reside in the forest with his people?
किमाहाराश्च ते तत्र ससैन्या न्यवसन्प्रभो ।
सान्तःपुरा महात्मान इति तद्ब्रूहि मेऽनघ ॥५॥
5. kimāhārāśca te tatra sasainyā nyavasanprabho ,
sāntaḥpurā mahātmāna iti tadbrūhi me'nagha.
5. kim āhārāḥ ca te tatra sasainyāḥ nyavasan prabho
sāntaḥpurāḥ mahātmānaḥ iti tat brūhi me anagha
5. ca prabho anagha te sasainyāḥ sāntaḥpurāḥ mahātmānaḥ
tatra kim āhārāḥ nyavasan iti tat me brūhi
5. And, O lord, what kind of food did those great-souled (mahātman) ones, along with their army and their inner palace women, consume there? Tell me that, O sinless one.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तेऽनुज्ञातास्तदा राजन्कुरुराजेन पाण्डवाः ।
विविधान्यन्नपानानि विश्राम्यानुभवन्ति ते ॥६॥
6. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
te'nujñātāstadā rājankururājena pāṇḍavāḥ ,
vividhānyannapānāni viśrāmyānubhavanti te.
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca te anujñātāḥ tadā rājan kururājena
pāṇḍavāḥ vividhāni anna pānāni viśrāmya anubhavanti te
6. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca rājan tadā kururājena anujñātāḥ te
pāṇḍavāḥ viśrāmya vividhāni anna pānāni te anubhavanti
6. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Then, O king, those Pāṇḍavas, having been permitted by the Kuru king, rested and subsequently partook of various foods and drinks.'
मासमेकं विजह्रुस्ते ससैन्यान्तःपुरा वने ।
अथ तत्रागमद्व्यासो यथोक्तं ते मयानघ ॥७॥
7. māsamekaṁ vijahruste sasainyāntaḥpurā vane ,
atha tatrāgamadvyāso yathoktaṁ te mayānagha.
7. māsam ekam vijahruḥ te sasainyāntaḥpurāḥ vane atha
tatra āgamat vyāsaḥ yathā uktam te mayā anagha
7. anagha mayā te yathā uktam te sasainyāntaḥpurāḥ
ekam māsam vane vijahruḥ atha vyāsaḥ tatra āgamat
7. For one month, they, along with their army and inner apartments, resided in the forest. Then Vyasa arrived there, as I have narrated to you, O sinless one.
तथा तु तेषां सर्वेषां कथाभिर्नृपसंनिधौ ।
व्यासमन्वासतां राजन्नाजग्मुर्मुनयोऽपरे ॥८॥
8. tathā tu teṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ kathābhirnṛpasaṁnidhau ,
vyāsamanvāsatāṁ rājannājagmurmunayo'pare.
8. tathā tu teṣām sarveṣām kathābhiḥ nṛpasaṃnidhau
vyāsam anvāsatām rājan ājagmuḥ munayaḥ apare
8. rājan tathā tu sarveṣām teṣām nṛpasaṃnidhau
vyāsam kathābhiḥ anvāsatām apare munayaḥ ājagmuḥ
8. O king, as all of them engaged in conversations around Vyasa in the king's presence, other sages (muni) also arrived.
नारदः पर्वतश्चैव देवलश्च महातपाः ।
विश्वावसुस्तुम्बुरुश्च चित्रसेनश्च भारत ॥९॥
9. nāradaḥ parvataścaiva devalaśca mahātapāḥ ,
viśvāvasustumburuśca citrasenaśca bhārata.
9. nāradaḥ parvataḥ ca eva devalaḥ ca mahātapāḥ
viśvāvasuḥ tumburuḥ ca citrasenaḥ ca bhārata
9. bhārata nāradaḥ ca eva parvataḥ ca devalaḥ
mahātapāḥ ca viśvāvasuḥ ca tumburuḥ ca citrasenaḥ
9. O Bhārata, (among those who arrived were) Nārada, Parvata, and Devala, who possessed great ascetic power (tapas), as well as Viśvāvasu, Tumburu, and Citrasena.
तेषामपि यथान्यायं पूजां चक्रे महामनाः ।
धृतराष्ट्राभ्यनुज्ञातः कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१०॥
10. teṣāmapi yathānyāyaṁ pūjāṁ cakre mahāmanāḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
10. teṣām api yathānyāyaṃ pūjām cakre mahāmanāḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ kururājaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
10. dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātaḥ mahāmanāḥ kururājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ api teṣām yathānyāyaṃ pūjām cakre
10. The magnanimous Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of the Kurus, having been permitted by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, properly offered honor to them all.
निषेदुस्ते ततः सर्वे पूजां प्राप्य युधिष्ठिरात् ।
आसनेष्वथ पुण्येषु बर्हिष्केषु वरेषु च ॥११॥
11. niṣeduste tataḥ sarve pūjāṁ prāpya yudhiṣṭhirāt ,
āsaneṣvatha puṇyeṣu barhiṣkeṣu vareṣu ca.
11. niṣeduḥ te tataḥ sarve pūjām prāpya yudhiṣṭhirāt
āsaneṣu atha puṇyeṣu barhiṣkeṣu vareṣu ca
11. te sarve yudhiṣṭhirāt pūjām prāpya tataḥ atha
puṇyeṣu barhiṣkeṣu vareṣu āsaneṣu ca niṣeduḥ
11. All of them, after receiving honor from Yudhiṣṭhira, then sat down on the excellent, sacred seats that were covered with kusha grass.
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु स तु राजा महामतिः ।
पाण्डुपुत्रैः परिवृतो निषसाद कुरूद्वहः ॥१२॥
12. teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu sa tu rājā mahāmatiḥ ,
pāṇḍuputraiḥ parivṛto niṣasāda kurūdvahaḥ.
12. teṣu tatra upaviṣṭeṣu saḥ tu rājā mahāmatiḥ
pāṇḍuputraiḥ parivṛtaḥ niṣasāda kurūdvahaḥ
12. teṣu tatra upaviṣṭeṣu saḥ mahāmatiḥ kurūdvahaḥ
rājā tu pāṇḍuputraiḥ parivṛtaḥ niṣasāda
12. While they were seated there, that great-minded king, the leader of the Kurus (Yudhiṣṭhira), surrounded by the Pāṇḍavas, then also sat down.
गान्धारी चैव कुन्ती च द्रौपदी सात्वती तथा ।
स्त्रियश्चान्यास्तथान्याभिः सहोपविविशुस्ततः ॥१३॥
13. gāndhārī caiva kuntī ca draupadī sātvatī tathā ,
striyaścānyāstathānyābhiḥ sahopaviviśustataḥ.
13. gāndhārī ca eva kuntī ca draupadī sātvatī tathā
striyaḥ ca anyāḥ tathā anyābhiḥ saha upaviviśuḥ tataḥ
13. gāndhārī ca eva kuntī ca draupadī sātvatī tathā ca
anyāḥ striyaḥ tathā anyābhiḥ saha tataḥ upaviviśuḥ
13. Gāndhārī, Kuntī, Draupadī, and Sātvatī, along with other women, then sat down with their companions.
तेषां तत्र कथा दिव्या धर्मिष्ठाश्चाभवन्नृप ।
ऋषीणां च पुराणानां देवासुरविमिश्रिताः ॥१४॥
14. teṣāṁ tatra kathā divyā dharmiṣṭhāścābhavannṛpa ,
ṛṣīṇāṁ ca purāṇānāṁ devāsuravimiśritāḥ.
14. teṣām tatra kathāḥ divyāḥ dharmiṣṭhāḥ ca abhavan
nṛpa ṛṣīṇām ca purāṇānām devāsuravimiśritāḥ
14. nṛpa teṣām tatra divyāḥ ca dharmiṣṭhāḥ ṛṣīṇām
ca purāṇānām devāsuravimiśritāḥ kathāḥ abhavan
14. O King, among them there were divine and very righteous discussions, as well as ancient stories of sages involving gods and demons.
ततः कथान्ते व्यासस्तं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ।
प्रोवाच वदतां श्रेष्ठः पुनरेव स तद्वचः ।
प्रीयमाणो महातेजाः सर्ववेदविदां वरः ॥१५॥
15. tataḥ kathānte vyāsastaṁ prajñācakṣuṣamīśvaram ,
provāca vadatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ punareva sa tadvacaḥ ,
prīyamāṇo mahātejāḥ sarvavedavidāṁ varaḥ.
15. tataḥ kathā-ante vyāsaḥ tam prajñā-cakṣuṣam
īśvaram provāca vadatām śreṣṭhaḥ
punaḥ eva saḥ tat vacaḥ prīyamāṇaḥ
mahā-tejāḥ sarva-veda-vidām varaḥ
15. Thereafter, at the conclusion of the narrative, Vyasa – who was preeminent among speakers, greatly glorious, and the foremost among all who knew the Vedas – being pleased, spoke those very words again to Dhritarashtra, the lord (īśvara) who possessed spiritual insight (prajñā-cakṣus).
विदितं मम राजेन्द्र यत्ते हृदि विवक्षितम् ।
दह्यमानस्य शोकेन तव पुत्रकृतेन वै ॥१६॥
16. viditaṁ mama rājendra yatte hṛdi vivakṣitam ,
dahyamānasya śokena tava putrakṛtena vai.
16. viditam mama rājendra yat te hṛdi vivakṣitam
dahyamānasya śokena tava putra-kṛtena vai
16. O king (rājendra), what you intend to say, lying within your heart, is known to me; I also know your suffering as you are consumed by grief for your sons.
गान्धार्याश्चैव यद्दुःखं हृदि तिष्ठति पार्थिव ।
कुन्त्याश्च यन्महाराज द्रौपद्याश्च हृदि स्थितम् ॥१७॥
17. gāndhāryāścaiva yadduḥkhaṁ hṛdi tiṣṭhati pārthiva ,
kuntyāśca yanmahārāja draupadyāśca hṛdi sthitam.
17. gāndhāryāḥ ca eva yat duḥkham hṛdi tiṣṭhati pārthiva
kuntyāḥ ca yat mahārāja draupadyāḥ ca hṛdi sthitam
17. And, O king, I know the sorrow that remains in Gandhari's heart; and, O great king (mahārāja), that which is situated in the hearts of Kunti and Draupadi.
यच्च धारयते तीव्रं दुःखं पुत्रविनाशजम् ।
सुभद्रा कृष्णभगिनी तच्चापि विदितं मम ॥१८॥
18. yacca dhārayate tīvraṁ duḥkhaṁ putravināśajam ,
subhadrā kṛṣṇabhaginī taccāpi viditaṁ mama.
18. yat ca dhārayate tīvram duḥkham putra-vināśa-jam
subhadrā kṛṣṇa-bhaginī tat ca api viditam mama
18. And the intense sorrow, arising from the destruction of her sons, that Subhadra, Kṛṣṇa's sister, bears - that too is known to me.
श्रुत्वा समागममिमं सर्वेषां वस्ततो नृप ।
संशयच्छेदनायाहं प्राप्तः कौरवनन्दन ॥१९॥
19. śrutvā samāgamamimaṁ sarveṣāṁ vastato nṛpa ,
saṁśayacchedanāyāhaṁ prāptaḥ kauravanandana.
19. śrutvā samāgamam imam sarveṣām vaḥ tataḥ nṛpa
saṃśayacchedanāya aham prāptaḥ kauravanandana
19. Having heard of this gathering of all of you, O King, O delight of the Kurus, I have arrived to dispel your doubts.
इमे च देवगन्धर्वाः सर्वे चैव महर्षयः ।
पश्यन्तु तपसो वीर्यमद्य मे चिरसंभृतम् ॥२०॥
20. ime ca devagandharvāḥ sarve caiva maharṣayaḥ ,
paśyantu tapaso vīryamadya me cirasaṁbhṛtam.
20. ime ca devagandharvāḥ sarve ca eva maharṣayaḥ
paśyantu tapasaḥ vīryam adya me cirasaṃbhṛtam
20. Let these gods and gandharvas, and indeed all the great sages, behold today the power of my long-accumulated asceticism (tapas).
तदुच्यतां महाबाहो कं कामं प्रदिशामि ते ।
प्रवणोऽस्मि वरं दातुं पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥२१॥
21. taducyatāṁ mahābāho kaṁ kāmaṁ pradiśāmi te ,
pravaṇo'smi varaṁ dātuṁ paśya me tapaso balam.
21. tat ucyatām mahābāho kam kāmam pradiśāmi te
pravaṇaḥ asmi varam dātum paśya me tapasaḥ balam
21. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, tell me what wish I may grant to you. I am inclined to give a boon; behold the power of my asceticism (tapas).
एवमुक्तः स राजेन्द्रो व्यासेनामितबुद्धिना ।
मुहूर्तमिव संचिन्त्य वचनायोपचक्रमे ॥२२॥
22. evamuktaḥ sa rājendro vyāsenāmitabuddhinā ,
muhūrtamiva saṁcintya vacanāyopacakrame.
22. evam uktaḥ saḥ rājendraḥ vyāsena amitabuddhinā
muhūrtam iva saṃcintya vacanāya upacakrame
22. Thus addressed by Vyasa, the one of immeasurable intellect, that chief of kings pondered for a moment, as it were, and then began to speak.
धन्योऽस्म्यनुगृहीतोऽस्मि सफलं जीवितं च मे ।
यन्मे समागमोऽद्येह भवद्भिः सह साधुभिः ॥२३॥
23. dhanyo'smyanugṛhīto'smi saphalaṁ jīvitaṁ ca me ,
yanme samāgamo'dyeha bhavadbhiḥ saha sādhubhiḥ.
23. dhanyaḥ asmi anugṛhītaḥ asmi saphalam jīvitam ca me
| yat me samāgamaḥ adya iha bhavadbhiḥ saha sādhubhiḥ
23. aham dhanyaḥ asmi aham anugṛhītaḥ asmi ca me jīvitam
saphalam yat me samāgamaḥ adya iha bhavadbhiḥ sādhubhiḥ saha
23. I am blessed, I am favored, and my life is fruitful, because today I have met with you, noble ones, here.
अद्य चाप्यवगच्छामि गतिमिष्टामिहात्मनः ।
भवद्भिर्ब्रह्मकल्पैर्यत्समेतोऽहं तपोधनाः ॥२४॥
24. adya cāpyavagacchāmi gatimiṣṭāmihātmanaḥ ,
bhavadbhirbrahmakalpairyatsameto'haṁ tapodhanāḥ.
24. adya ca api avagacchāmi gatim iṣṭām iha ātmanaḥ |
bhavadbhiḥ brahma-kalpaiḥ yat sametaḥ aham tapodhanāḥ
24. ca api adya aham iha ātmanaḥ iṣṭām gatim avagacchāmi
yat aham brahma-kalpaiḥ bhavadbhiḥ sametaḥ tapodhanāḥ
24. And today, O ascetics (tapodhanāḥ), I understand my desired spiritual state (ātman) here, because I have met with you, who are like Brahmā.
दर्शनादेव भवतां पूतोऽहं नात्र संशयः ।
विद्यते न भयं चापि परलोकान्ममानघाः ॥२५॥
25. darśanādeva bhavatāṁ pūto'haṁ nātra saṁśayaḥ ,
vidyate na bhayaṁ cāpi paralokānmamānaghāḥ.
25. darśanāt eva bhavatām pūtaḥ aham na atra saṃśayaḥ
| vidyate na bhayam ca api paralokāt mama anaghāḥ
25. bhavatām darśanāt eva aham pūtaḥ atra saṃśayaḥ na
ca api anaghāḥ mama paralokāt bhayam na vidyate
25. By the mere sight of you, I am purified; there is no doubt about this. And, O sinless ones, there is also no fear for me from the next world.
किं तु तस्य सुदुर्बुद्धेर्मन्दस्यापनयैर्भृशम् ।
दूयते मे मनो नित्यं स्मरतः पुत्रगृद्धिनः ॥२६॥
26. kiṁ tu tasya sudurbuddhermandasyāpanayairbhṛśam ,
dūyate me mano nityaṁ smarataḥ putragṛddhinaḥ.
26. kim tu tasya sudurbuddheḥ mandasya apanayaiḥ bhṛśam
| dūyate me manaḥ nityam smarataḥ putra-gṛddhinaḥ
26. kim tu me manaḥ nityam dūyate tasya sudurbuddheḥ
mandasya putra-gṛddhinaḥ smarataḥ bhṛśam apanayaiḥ
26. But my mind is constantly tormented by the many wrongdoings of that exceedingly foolish and dull-witted one, as I remember him who is greedy for a son.
अपापाः पाण्डवा येन निकृताः पापबुद्धिना ।
घातिता पृथिवी चेयं सहसा सनरद्विपा ॥२७॥
27. apāpāḥ pāṇḍavā yena nikṛtāḥ pāpabuddhinā ,
ghātitā pṛthivī ceyaṁ sahasā sanaradvipā.
27. apāpāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ yena nikṛtāḥ pāpabuddhinā
ghātitā pṛthivī ca iyam sahasā sa-nara-dvipā
27. yena pāpabuddhinā apāpāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ nikṛtāḥ ca
iyam pṛthivī sahasā sa-nara-dvipā ghātitā
27. By whom the innocent Pāṇḍavas were treacherously wronged, and this entire earth, along with its people and elephants, was violently destroyed by that evil-minded one.
राजानश्च महात्मानो नानाजनपदेश्वराः ।
आगम्य मम पुत्रार्थे सर्वे मृत्युवशं गताः ॥२८॥
28. rājānaśca mahātmāno nānājanapadeśvarāḥ ,
āgamya mama putrārthe sarve mṛtyuvaśaṁ gatāḥ.
28. rājānaḥ ca mahātmānaḥ nānājanapada-īśvarāḥ
āgamya mama putrārthe sarve mṛtyuvaśaṃ gatāḥ
28. ca sarve mahātmānaḥ nānājanapada-īśvarāḥ
rājānaḥ mama putrārthe āgamya mṛtyuvaśaṃ gatāḥ
28. And all those noble kings, rulers of various lands, having come for the sake of my son, have fallen under the dominion of death.
ये ते पुत्रांश्च दाराश्च प्राणांश्च मनसः प्रियान् ।
परित्यज्य गताः शूराः प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् ॥२९॥
29. ye te putrāṁśca dārāśca prāṇāṁśca manasaḥ priyān ,
parityajya gatāḥ śūrāḥ pretarājaniveśanam.
29. ye te putrān ca dārāḥ ca prāṇān ca manasaḥ priyān
parityajya gatāḥ śūrāḥ pretarāja-niveśanam
29. ye śūrāḥ te manasaḥ priyān putrān ca dārāḥ ca
prāṇān ca parityajya pretarāja-niveśanam gatāḥ
29. Those heroes who, abandoning their sons, wives, and their very lives so dear to the heart, have gone to the abode of the king of the departed (Yama).
का नु तेषां गतिर्ब्रह्मन्मित्रार्थे ये हता मृधे ।
तथैव पुत्रपौत्राणां मम ये निहता युधि ॥३०॥
30. kā nu teṣāṁ gatirbrahmanmitrārthe ye hatā mṛdhe ,
tathaiva putrapautrāṇāṁ mama ye nihatā yudhi.
30. kā nu teṣām gatiḥ brahman mitrārthe ye hatāḥ mṛdhe
tathā eva putrapautrāṇām mama ye nihatāḥ yudhi
30. brahman nu kā gatiḥ teṣām ye mitrārthe mṛdhe hatāḥ
tathā eva mama putrapautrāṇām ye yudhi nihatāḥ
30. O (brahman), what indeed is the ultimate destiny of those who were slain in battle for the sake of a friend? And similarly, what is the fate of my own sons and grandsons who were killed in the war?
दूयते मे मनोऽभीक्ष्णं घातयित्वा महाबलम् ।
भीष्मं शांतनवं वृद्धं द्रोणं च द्विजसत्तमम् ॥३१॥
31. dūyate me mano'bhīkṣṇaṁ ghātayitvā mahābalam ,
bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ vṛddhaṁ droṇaṁ ca dvijasattamam.
31. dūyate me manaḥ abhīkṣṇam ghātayitvā mahābalam
bhīṣmam śāntanavam vṛddham droṇam ca dvijasattamam
31. me manaḥ abhīkṣṇam ghātayitvā mahābalam bhīṣmam
śāntanavam vṛddham ca dvijasattamam droṇam dūyate
31. My mind constantly grieves (dūyate), having caused the slaying of the mighty Bhishma, the aged son of Shantanu, and Drona, the most excellent among Brahmins.
मम पुत्रेण मूढेन पापेन सुहृदद्विषा ।
क्षयं नीतं कुलं दीप्तं पृथिवीराज्यमिच्छता ॥३२॥
32. mama putreṇa mūḍhena pāpena suhṛdadviṣā ,
kṣayaṁ nītaṁ kulaṁ dīptaṁ pṛthivīrājyamicchatā.

32. My deluded, sinful, and hostile-to-friends son, desiring the sovereignty of the earth, has brought the glorious lineage to ruin (kṣayam).
एतत्सर्वमनुस्मृत्य दह्यमानो दिवानिशम् ।
न शान्तिमधिगच्छामि दुःखशोकसमाहतः ।
इति मे चिन्तयानस्य पितः शर्म न विद्यते ॥३३॥
33. etatsarvamanusmṛtya dahyamāno divāniśam ,
na śāntimadhigacchāmi duḥkhaśokasamāhataḥ ,
iti me cintayānasya pitaḥ śarma na vidyate.
33. etat sarvam anusmṛtya dahyamānaḥ
divā-niśam na śāntim adhigacchāmi
duḥkha-śoka-samāhataḥ iti me
cintayānasya pitaḥ śarma na vidyate
33. etat sarvam anusmṛtya divā-niśam dahyamānaḥ duḥkha-śoka-samāhataḥ śāntim na adhigacchāmi.
iti cintayānasya me pitaḥ śarma na vidyate
33. Recollecting all this, burning day and night, and overwhelmed by misery and sorrow (duḥkha-śoka), I find no peace (śāntim). Thus, as I ponder, O father, there is no comfort for me.
