वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अथापरोऽदृश्यत रूपसंपदा स्त्रीणामलंकारधरो बृहत्पुमान् ।
प्राकारवप्रे प्रतिमुच्य कुण्डले दीर्घे च कम्बू परिहाटके शुभे ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
athāparo'dṛśyata rūpasaṁpadā; strīṇāmalaṁkāradharo bṛhatpumān ,
prākāravapre pratimucya kuṇḍale; dīrghe ca kambū parihāṭake śubhe.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then another was seen - a huge man endowed with abundant beauty, wearing women's ornaments. He had put on long, auspicious, golden conch-shell bangles and large earrings resembling ramparts.
बहूंश्च दीर्घांश्च विकीर्य मूर्धजान्महाभुजो वारणमत्तविक्रमः ।
गतेन भूमिमभिकम्पयंस्तदा विराटमासाद्य सभासमीपतः ॥२॥
2. bahūṁśca dīrghāṁśca vikīrya mūrdhajā;nmahābhujo vāraṇamattavikramaḥ ,
gatena bhūmimabhikampayaṁstadā; virāṭamāsādya sabhāsamīpataḥ.
2. bahūn ca dīrghān ca vikīrya mūrdhajān
mahābhujaḥ vāraṇamattavikramaḥ
| gatena bhūmim abhikampayan
tadā virāṭam āsādya sabhāsamīpataḥ
2. With his mighty arms and the prowess of an intoxicated elephant, having let his many long hairs fall loose, he then approached Virāṭa near the assembly hall, shaking the earth with his gait.
तं प्रेक्ष्य राजोपगतं सभातले सत्रप्रतिच्छन्नमरिप्रमाथिनम् ।
विराजमानं परमेण वर्चसा सुतं महेन्द्रस्य गजेन्द्रविक्रमम् ॥३॥
3. taṁ prekṣya rājopagataṁ sabhātale; satrapraticchannamaripramāthinam ,
virājamānaṁ parameṇa varcasā; sutaṁ mahendrasya gajendravikramam.
3. tam prekṣya rājan upagatam sabhātale
sattrapraticchannam aripramāthinam
| virājamānam parameṇa varcasā
sutam mahendrasya gajendravikramam
3. Seeing him - who had approached the king on the assembly floor, disguised by a strategem (sattrapraticchanna), an annihilator of enemies, shining with supreme splendor, the son of the great Indra, and possessing the valor of a lordly elephant...
सर्वानपृच्छच्च समीपचारिणः कुतोऽयमायाति न मे पुरा श्रुतः ।
न चैनमूचुर्विदितं तदा नराः सविस्मितं वाक्यमिदं नृपोऽब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. sarvānapṛcchacca samīpacāriṇaḥ; kuto'yamāyāti na me purā śrutaḥ ,
na cainamūcurviditaṁ tadā narāḥ; savismitaṁ vākyamidaṁ nṛpo'bravīt.
4. sarvān apṛcchat ca samīpacāriṇaḥ
kutaḥ ayam āyāti na me purā śrutaḥ |
na ca enam ūcuḥ viditam tadā narāḥ
savismitam vākyam idam nṛpaḥ abravīt
4. (The king) asked all those nearby, "From where does this person come? I have not heard of him before." And the men then could not tell him what was known. Highly astonished, the king then uttered this statement.
सर्वोपपन्नः पुरुषो मनोरमः श्यामो युवा वारणयूथपोपमः ।
विमुच्य कम्बू परिहाटके शुभे विमुच्य वेणीमपिनह्य कुण्डले ॥५॥
5. sarvopapannaḥ puruṣo manoramaḥ; śyāmo yuvā vāraṇayūthapopamaḥ ,
vimucya kambū parihāṭake śubhe; vimucya veṇīmapinahya kuṇḍale.
5. sarvopapannaḥ puruṣaḥ manoramaḥ
śyāmaḥ yuvā vāraṇayūthapopamaḥ
vimucya kambū parihāṭake śubhe
vimucya veṇīm apināhya kuṇḍale
5. A man endowed with all excellent qualities, charming, dark-complexioned, youthful, and resembling a leader of an elephant herd. Having removed the two beautiful bracelets from his wrists, and having untied his braid, he put on earrings.
शिखी सुकेशः परिधाय चान्यथा भवस्व धन्वी कवची शरी तथा ।
आरुह्य यानं परिधावतां भवान्सुतैः समो मे भव वा मया समः ॥६॥
6. śikhī sukeśaḥ paridhāya cānyathā; bhavasva dhanvī kavacī śarī tathā ,
āruhya yānaṁ paridhāvatāṁ bhavā;nsutaiḥ samo me bhava vā mayā samaḥ.
6. śikhī sukeśaḥ paridhāya ca anyathā
bhavasva dhanvī kavacī śarī tathā
āruhya yānaṃ paridhāvatām bhavān
sutaiḥ samaḥ me bhava vā mayā samaḥ
6. You should become one with a topknot and beautiful hair, dressed differently, an archer, armored, and armed with arrows. Mounting a chariot, among those who are swift, you should be equal to my sons or equal to me.
वृद्धो ह्यहं वै परिहारकामः सर्वान्मत्स्यांस्तरसा पालयस्व ।
नैवंविधाः क्लीबरूपा भवन्ति कथंचनेति प्रतिभाति मे मनः ॥७॥
7. vṛddho hyahaṁ vai parihārakāmaḥ; sarvānmatsyāṁstarasā pālayasva ,
naivaṁvidhāḥ klībarūpā bhavanti; kathaṁcaneti pratibhāti me manaḥ.
7. vṛddhaḥ hi aham vai parihārakāmaḥ
sarvān matsyān tarasā pālayasva
na evaṃvidhāḥ klībarūpāḥ bhavanti
kathaṃcana iti pratibhāti me manaḥ
7. Indeed, I am old and wish to be excused (from battle). You must valiantly protect all the Matsyas. My mind perceives that those with such a form (as yours) are certainly not eunuchs.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
गायामि नृत्याम्यथ वादयामि भद्रोऽस्मि नृत्ते कुशलोऽस्मि गीते ।
त्वमुत्तरायाः परिदत्स्व मां स्वयं भवामि देव्या नरदेव नर्तकः ॥८॥
8. arjuna uvāca ,
gāyāmi nṛtyāmyatha vādayāmi; bhadro'smi nṛtte kuśalo'smi gīte ,
tvamuttarāyāḥ paridatsva māṁ svayaṁ; bhavāmi devyā naradeva nartakaḥ.
8. arjuna uvāca gāyāmi nṛtyāmi atha
vādayāmi bhadraḥ asmi nṛtte kuśalaḥ asmi
gīte tvam uttarāyāḥ paridatsva mām
svayam bhavāmi devyā naradeva nartakaḥ
8. Arjuna said: "I sing, I dance, and I play musical instruments. I am excellent in dance and skilled in music. O King, you yourself should entrust me to Uttarā; I will be the queen's dancer."
इदं तु रूपं मम येन किं नु तत्प्रकीर्तयित्वा भृशशोकवर्धनम् ।
बृहन्नडां वै नरदेव विद्धि मां सुतं सुतां वा पितृमातृवर्जिताम् ॥९॥
9. idaṁ tu rūpaṁ mama yena kiṁ nu ta;tprakīrtayitvā bhṛśaśokavardhanam ,
bṛhannaḍāṁ vai naradeva viddhi māṁ; sutaṁ sutāṁ vā pitṛmātṛvarjitām.
9. idam tu rūpam mama yena kim nu tat
prakīrtayitvā bhṛśaśokavardhanam
bṛhannadām vai naradeva viddhi
mām sutam sutām vā pitṛmātṛvarjitām
9. This is indeed my current form, but what is the use of describing that which would greatly increase sorrow? O king, know me as Bṛhannadā, a son or a daughter deprived of father and mother.
विराट उवाच ।
ददामि ते हन्त वरं बृहन्नडे सुतां च मे नर्तय याश्च तादृशीः ।
इदं तु ते कर्म समं न मे मतं समुद्रनेमिं पृथिवीं त्वमर्हसि ॥१०॥
10. virāṭa uvāca ,
dadāmi te hanta varaṁ bṛhannaḍe; sutāṁ ca me nartaya yāśca tādṛśīḥ ,
idaṁ tu te karma samaṁ na me mataṁ; samudranemiṁ pṛthivīṁ tvamarhasi.
10. virāṭaḥ uvāca dadāmi te hanta varam
bṛhannade sutām ca me nartaya yāḥ ca
tādr̥śīḥ idam tu te karma samam na me
matam samudranemim pr̥thivīm tvam arhasi
10. Virāṭa said: Indeed, I grant you a boon, Bṛhannadā. Make my daughter dance, and also those others who are like her. However, this deed (karma) of yours is not considered appropriate by me; you deserve the entire earth (pṛthivī) encircled by the ocean.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
बृहन्नडां तामभिवीक्ष्य मत्स्यराट्कलासु नृत्ते च तथैव वादिते ।
अपुंस्त्वमप्यस्य निशम्य च स्थिरं ततः कुमारीपुरमुत्ससर्ज तम् ॥११॥
11. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
bṛhannaḍāṁ tāmabhivīkṣya matsyarā;ṭkalāsu nṛtte ca tathaiva vādite ,
apuṁstvamapyasya niśamya ca sthiraṁ; tataḥ kumārīpuramutsasarja tam.
11. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca bṛhannadām tām
abhivīkṣya matsyarāṭ kalāsu nṛtte ca tathā
eva vādite apuṃstvam api asya niśamya ca
sthiram tataḥ kumārīpuram utsasarja tam
11. Vaiśampāyana said: King Matsya, having observed that Bṛhannadā excelled in arts, dance, and music, and having also perceived her stable lack of masculinity, then sent him to the women's quarters.
स शिक्षयामास च गीतवादितं सुतां विराटस्य धनंजयः प्रभुः ।
सखीश्च तस्याः परिचारिकास्तथा प्रियश्च तासां स बभूव पाण्डवः ॥१२॥
12. sa śikṣayāmāsa ca gītavāditaṁ; sutāṁ virāṭasya dhanaṁjayaḥ prabhuḥ ,
sakhīśca tasyāḥ paricārikāstathā; priyaśca tāsāṁ sa babhūva pāṇḍavaḥ.
12. saḥ śikṣayāmāsa ca gītavāditam sutām
virāṭasya dhanañjayaḥ prabhuḥ
sakhīḥ ca tasyāḥ paricārikāḥ tathā
priyaḥ ca tāsām saḥ babhūva pāṇḍavaḥ
12. And that mighty Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), son of Pāṇḍu, taught the daughter of Virāṭa, as well as her companions and attendants, singing and instrumental music. He became dear to them.
तथा स सत्रेण धनंजयोऽवसत्प्रियाणि कुर्वन्सह ताभिरात्मवान् ।
तथागतं तत्र न जज्ञिरे जना बहिश्चरा वाप्यथ वान्तरेचराः ॥१३॥
13. tathā sa satreṇa dhanaṁjayo'vasa;tpriyāṇi kurvansaha tābhirātmavān ,
tathāgataṁ tatra na jajñire janā; bahiścarā vāpyatha vāntarecarāḥ.
13. tathā sa satreṇa dhanañjayaḥ avasat
priyāṇi kurvan saha tābhiḥ ātmavān
| tathāgatam tatra na jajñire janā
bahiḥ carā vā api atha vā antaḥ carāḥ
13. Thus, that self-controlled (ātman) Arjuna (Dhanañjaya) lived there during the ritual session, performing agreeable deeds with those women. Consequently, the people present, whether moving outside or residing inside, did not recognize him, who had arrived in such a manner.
