Suta said: Then Vasuki indeed spoke these words to the sage Jarutkāru: "This daughter, who is my sister, bears the same name as you and is endowed with austerity."

2.
O best of brahmins, O ascetic, accept this wife [my sister]. I will support her, and I will protect her with all my strength.

3.
Once the Nāga had promised, saying 'I will support (my) sister,' Jaratkāru then went to the serpent's dwelling.

4.
There, the righteous-souled Jaratkāru, who was the best among those learned in mantras, whose penance had grown, and who observed great vows, took [her] hand, consecrated with traditional rites and mantras.

5.
Then, taking his wife, and being praised by the great sages, he went to the brilliant and agreeable dwelling of the king of serpents.

There, indeed, a bed was prepared, covered with superb bedding. In that place, Jaratkāru, accompanied by his wife, dwelled.

7.
There, that best of men made an agreement with his wife: 'Nothing disagreeable should ever be done to me, nor should anything (disagreeable) be spoken to me.'

Indeed, if you commit an unpleasant act, I would abandon you and also my residence in your house. Accept this statement that I have made.

9.
Then, the sister of the Naga lord, greatly agitated and overwhelmed with sorrow, said to him, 'So be it.'

10.
Similarly, that glorious woman, seeking to please, attended to her husband, who was of a sorrowful disposition, using ingenious methods (like those of a white crow).

11.
Then, one time, Vasuki's sister, having bathed at the appropriate time (for conception), duly approached that husband, the great sage.

12.
There, in her, an embryo was formed, radiant like fire, endowed with immense ascetic power, and brilliant like Vaiśvānara (the universal fire). Just as the moon waxes in the bright fortnight, so too did he grow.

13.
Then, after a few days, the great ascetic Jaratskāru, placing his head on her lap, fell asleep as if utterly exhausted.

14.
And when that best of Brahmins (Jaratskāru) was asleep, the sun set behind the mountains, signaling the end of the day. O Brahmā, it was then that Vāsuki's noble-minded sister, fearful of neglecting her duty, reflected.
किं नु मे सुकृतं भूयाद्भर्तुरुत्थापनं न वा ।

15.
What good action should I perform? Should I awaken my husband or not? For he is indeed prone to anger, though righteous. How can I avoid offending him?

dharmalopaḥ garīyān vai syāt atra iti akarot manaḥ
16.
Is it (better to risk) the righteous man's anger, or the neglect of duty? Neglecting my duty would surely be more serious in this situation. With this thought, she made up her mind.
उत्थापयिष्ये यद्येनं ध्रुवं कोपं करिष्यति ।

17.
If I wake him up, he will certainly become angry. Moreover, a transgression of dharma would certainly occur for him by missing the twilight prayer.

18.
Having thus resolved in her mind, Jaratkāru, the serpent-maiden, who was sweet-speaking, then addressed these gentle words to that sage, who was lying down, resembling fire, and shining with intense austerity.

19.
Rise, O greatly fortunate one! The sun is setting. O venerable one, having touched water and with your vows disciplined, perform your twilight prayer.

20.
O Lord, this moment, when the Agnihotra sacrifice is to be made manifest, is both beautiful and awe-inspiring. And this twilight is now prevailing in the western direction.

Thus addressed, that venerable sage Jaratkāru, who possessed great austerity, spoke these words to his wife, whose lips were trembling.

And furthermore, no one who has been disrespected would wish to remain here; how much less would I, a person of righteous character, or anyone like me, desire to stay?

Thus addressed with heart-trembling words by her husband, Jaratkāru, the sister of Vāsuki, spoke there in the dwelling.

The great ascetic sage Jaratkāru, thus addressed by his wife, became overcome with anger and wished to abandon the serpent-woman.

My speech does not utter falsehood. I shall depart now, O serpent-woman, for this agreement was made between us two previously.

"O gentle one, O auspicious one, I have lived happily (with you). You should tell your brother, O timid one, that 'the venerable one has departed from here.' And you, when I have left, should also not feel sorrow."

30.
Thus addressed, Jaratkāru, the woman of faultless limbs, who was overwhelmed by anxiety and sorrow, then replied to her husband, Jaratkāru.

31.
Then, the beautiful-hipped woman, with a voice choked with tears and a parched face, with folded hands and tear-filled eyes, mustered courage, though her heart was trembling.

32.
O knower of dharma, you should not abandon me, who am sinless. You yourself are steadfast in dharma, and I am always devoted to what is dear and beneficial.

33.
O best of twice-born, and whatever reason there was for my giving myself to you—if I return without having obtained that (result), what will Vasuki say to me, foolish as I am?

34.
O best of beings, that desired offspring for my relatives, who are overcome by a mother's curse, is not yet seen from you.

35.
Indeed, through the obtaining of offspring from you, there would be welfare for my relatives. O twice-born, this union of mine with you should not be fruitless.

36.
O worshipful one, O best of beings, I, who desire the welfare of my relatives, implore you. Having placed this embryo of unmanifest form within me, how can you, being a great-souled one, wish to abandon me, who am sinless?

37.
Thus addressed (by his wife), that sage spoke these words to his wife: 'Whatever is appropriate and suitable for me, Jaradkaru the ascetic (is as follows:)'
अस्त्येष गर्भः सुभगे तव वैश्वानरोपमः ।

38.
'O fortunate one, this embryo exists for you; he will be like Vaīśvānara (fire), a sage with a supremely righteous soul, and a master of the Vedas and Vedāṅgas.'
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा जरत्कारुर्महानृषिः ।

39. evamuktvā sa dharmātmā jaratkārurmahānṛṣiḥ ,

39.
Having spoken thus, that great sage Jaradkaru, whose soul was righteous, with a firm resolve, again departed for severe austerity.
