जनमेजय उवाच ।
कथं विनष्टा भगवन्नन्धका वृष्णिभिः सह ।
पश्यतो वासुदेवस्य भोजाश्चैव महारथाः ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
kathaṁ vinaṣṭā bhagavannandhakā vṛṣṇibhiḥ saha ,
paśyato vāsudevasya bhojāścaiva mahārathāḥ.

1. Janamejaya said: O revered one, how were the Andhakas, along with the Vṛṣṇis and the great warriors (mahārathāḥ) of the Bhojas, destroyed while Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) was watching?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
षट्त्रिंशेऽथ ततो वर्षे वृष्णीनामनयो महान् ।
अन्योन्यं मुसलैस्ते तु निजघ्नुः कालचोदिताः ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ṣaṭtriṁśe'tha tato varṣe vṛṣṇīnāmanayo mahān ,
anyonyaṁ musalaiste tu nijaghnuḥ kālacoditāḥ.

2. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then, in the thirty-sixth year, a great calamity (anaya) befell the Vṛṣṇis. Driven by time (kāla), they struck one another with maces.
जनमेजय उवाच ।
केनानुशप्तास्ते वीराः क्षयं वृष्ण्यन्धका ययुः ।
भोजाश्च द्विजवर्य त्वं विस्तरेण वदस्व मे ॥३॥
3. janamejaya uvāca ,
kenānuśaptāste vīrāḥ kṣayaṁ vṛṣṇyandhakā yayuḥ ,
bhojāśca dvijavarya tvaṁ vistareṇa vadasva me.
3. janamejayaḥ uvāca kena anuśaptāḥ te vīrāḥ kṣayam vṛṣṇyandhakāḥ
yayuḥ bhojāḥ ca dvijavarya tvam vistareṇa vadasva me

3. Janamejaya said: By whom were those heroes, the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas, along with the Bhojas, cursed to destruction? O best of the twice-born (dvija), please tell me in detail.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
विश्वामित्रं च कण्वं च नारदं च तपोधनम् ।
सारणप्रमुखा वीरा ददृशुर्द्वारकागतान् ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
viśvāmitraṁ ca kaṇvaṁ ca nāradaṁ ca tapodhanam ,
sāraṇapramukhā vīrā dadṛśurdvārakāgatān.
4. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca viśvāmitram ca kaṇvam ca nāradam ca
tapodhanam sāraṇapramukhāḥ vīrāḥ dadṛśuḥ dvārakāgatān

viśvāmitram ca kaṇvam ca tapodhanam nāradam ca dadṛśuḥ
4. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: The heroes led by Sāraṇa (Sāraṇapramukhāḥ) saw Viśvāmitra, Kaṇva, and Nārada, who possessed ascetic wealth (tapas), as they arrived in Dvārakā.
ते वै साम्बं पुरस्कृत्य भूषयित्वा स्त्रियं यथा ।
अब्रुवन्नुपसंगम्य दैवदण्डनिपीडिताः ॥५॥
5. te vai sāmbaṁ puraskṛtya bhūṣayitvā striyaṁ yathā ,
abruvannupasaṁgamya daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ.

yathā abruvan upasaṅgamya daivadaṇḍanipīḍitāḥ

5. Afflicted by divine retribution, they indeed approached, having dressed Samba like a woman and placed him before them, and then spoke.
इयं स्त्री पुत्रकामस्य बभ्रोरमिततेजसः ।
ऋषयः साधु जानीत किमियं जनयिष्यति ॥६॥
6. iyaṁ strī putrakāmasya babhroramitatejasaḥ ,
ṛṣayaḥ sādhu jānīta kimiyaṁ janayiṣyati.
6. iyam strī putrakāmasya babhroḥ amitatejasaḥ
ṛṣayaḥ sādhu jānīta kim iyam janayiṣyati
6. ṛṣayaḥ amitatejasaḥ putrakāmasya babhroḥ
iyam strī iyam kim janayiṣyati sādhu jānīta
6. This woman belongs to Babhru, of immeasurable splendor, who desires a son. O revered sages (muni), please tell us clearly: what will she give birth to?
इत्युक्तास्ते तदा राजन्विप्रलम्भप्रधर्षिताः ।
प्रत्यब्रुवंस्तान्मुनयो यत्तच्छृणु नराधिप ॥७॥
7. ityuktāste tadā rājanvipralambhapradharṣitāḥ ,
pratyabruvaṁstānmunayo yattacchṛṇu narādhipa.
7. iti uktāḥ te tadā rājan vipralambhapradharṣitāḥ
pratyabruvan tān munayaḥ yat tat śṛṇu narādhipa
7. rājan tadā iti uktāḥ vipralambhapradharṣitāḥ te
munayaḥ tān pratyabruvan narādhipa yat tat śṛṇu
7. O King (rājan), thus addressed and feeling insulted by the deceit, the sages (muni) then replied to them. O ruler of men, hear what they said.
वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय मुसलं घोरमायसम् ।
वासुदेवस्य दायादः साम्बोऽयं जनयिष्यति ॥८॥
8. vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya musalaṁ ghoramāyasam ,
vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāmbo'yaṁ janayiṣyati.
8. vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya musalam ghoram āyasam
vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāmbaḥ ayam janayiṣyati
8. ayam vāsudevasya dāyādaḥ sāmbaḥ ghoram āyasam
musalam vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya janayiṣyati
8. This Samba, the descendant of Vasudeva, will give birth to a terrible iron club, destined for the destruction of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas.
येन यूयं सुदुर्वृत्ता नृशंसा जातमन्यवः ।
उच्छेत्तारः कुलं कृत्स्नमृते रामजनार्दनौ ॥९॥
9. yena yūyaṁ sudurvṛttā nṛśaṁsā jātamanyavaḥ ,
ucchettāraḥ kulaṁ kṛtsnamṛte rāmajanārdanau.
9. yena yūyam sudurvṛttāḥ nṛśaṃsāḥ jātamanavaḥ
ucchettāraḥ kulam kṛtsnam ṛte rāmajanārdanau
9. Because of this, you, who are very ill-behaved, cruel, and enraged, will be the destroyers of your entire family, with the exception of Rāma and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).
समुद्रं यास्यति श्रीमांस्त्यक्त्वा देहं हलायुधः ।
जरा कृष्णं महात्मानं शयानं भुवि भेत्स्यति ॥१०॥
10. samudraṁ yāsyati śrīmāṁstyaktvā dehaṁ halāyudhaḥ ,
jarā kṛṣṇaṁ mahātmānaṁ śayānaṁ bhuvi bhetsyati.
10. samudram yāsyati śrīmān tyaktvā deham halāyudhaḥ
jarā kṛṣṇam mahātmānam śayānam bhuvi bhetsyati
10. The glorious Halāyudha (Balarāma), abandoning his body, will merge into the ocean. Old age will overcome Kṛṣṇa, the great (ātman), as he lies on the earth.
इत्यब्रुवन्त ते राजन्प्रलब्धास्तैर्दुरात्मभिः ।
मुनयः क्रोधरक्ताक्षाः समीक्ष्याथ परस्परम् ॥११॥
11. ityabruvanta te rājanpralabdhāstairdurātmabhiḥ ,
munayaḥ krodharaktākṣāḥ samīkṣyātha parasparam.
11. iti abruvanta te rājan pralabdhāḥ taiḥ durātmabhiḥ
munayaḥ krodharaktākṣāḥ samīkṣya atha parasparam
11. O King, the sages, who had been mocked by those wicked-minded (persons), spoke thus, after looking at each other with eyes red from anger.
तथोक्त्वा मुनयस्ते
तु ततः केशवमभ्ययुः ॥१२॥
12. tathoktvā munayaste tu
tataḥ keśavamabhyayuḥ.
12. tathā uktvā munayaḥ te tu
tataḥ keśavam abhyayuḥ
12. Having spoken thus, those sages then approached Keśava (Kṛṣṇa).
अथाब्रवीत्तदा वृष्णीञ्श्रुत्वैवं मधुसूदनः ।
अन्तज्ञो मतिमांस्तस्य भवितव्यं तथेति तान् ॥१३॥
13. athābravīttadā vṛṣṇīñśrutvaivaṁ madhusūdanaḥ ,
antajño matimāṁstasya bhavitavyaṁ tatheti tān.
13. atha abravīt tadā vṛṣṇīn śrutvā evam madhusūdanaḥ
antajñaḥ matimān tasya bhavitavyam tathā iti tān
13. atha evam śrutvā antajñaḥ matimān madhusūdanaḥ tadā
tān vṛṣṇīn abravīt tasya bhavitavyam tathā iti
13. Then, having heard this, the sagacious Krishna (madhusūdana), who understood the ultimate outcome, spoke to those Vrishnis, acknowledging that "such must be the destiny (bhavitavya)."
एवमुक्त्वा हृषीकेशः प्रविवेश पुनर्गृहान् ।
कृतान्तमन्यथा नैच्छत्कर्तुं स जगतः प्रभुः ॥१४॥
14. evamuktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ praviveśa punargṛhān ,
kṛtāntamanyathā naicchatkartuṁ sa jagataḥ prabhuḥ.
14. evam uktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ praviveśa punaḥ gṛhān kṛtāntam
anyathā na aicchat kartum saḥ jagataḥ prabhuḥ
14. evam uktvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ punaḥ gṛhān praviveśa saḥ
jagataḥ prabhuḥ kṛtāntam anyathā kartum na aicchat
14. Having spoken thus, Krishna (hṛṣīkeśa) re-entered his dwellings. He, the lord of the world, had no desire to change what was destined (kṛtānta).
श्वोभूतेऽथ ततः साम्बो मुसलं तदसूत वै ।
वृष्ण्यन्धकविनाशाय किंकरप्रतिमं महत् ॥१५॥
15. śvobhūte'tha tataḥ sāmbo musalaṁ tadasūta vai ,
vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya kiṁkarapratimaṁ mahat.
15. śvobhūte atha tataḥ sāmbaḥ musalam tat asūta
vai vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya kiṅkarapratimam mahat
15. atha śvobhūte tataḥ sāmbaḥ vṛṣṇyandhakavināśāya
mahat kiṅkarapratimam tat musalam vai asūta
15. Then, on the following day, Samba indeed produced that great club (musala), formidable and resembling a mace of a divine attendant (kiṅkarapratima), for the annihilation of the Vrishnis and Andhakas.
प्रसूतं शापजं घोरं तच्च राज्ञे न्यवेदयन् ।
विषण्णरूपस्तद्राजा सूक्ष्मं चूर्णमकारयत् ॥१६॥
16. prasūtaṁ śāpajaṁ ghoraṁ tacca rājñe nyavedayan ,
viṣaṇṇarūpastadrājā sūkṣmaṁ cūrṇamakārayat.
16. prasūtam śāpajam ghoram tat ca rājñe nyavedayan
viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ tat rājā sūkṣmam cūrṇam akārayat
16. ca prasūtam śāpajam ghoram tat rājñe nyavedayan
viṣaṇṇarūpaḥ tat rājā sūkṣmam cūrṇam akārayat
16. And they reported that terrible, curse-born (śāpaja) product to the king. That king, appearing dejected, then had it ground into a fine powder.
प्राक्षिपन्सागरे तच्च पुरुषा राजशासनात् ।
अघोषयंश्च नगरे वचनादाहुकस्य च ॥१७॥
17. prākṣipansāgare tacca puruṣā rājaśāsanāt ,
aghoṣayaṁśca nagare vacanādāhukasya ca.
17. prākṣipan sāgare tat ca puruṣāḥ rājaśāsanāt
aghoṣayan ca nagare vacanāt āhukasya ca
17. puruṣāḥ rājaśāsanāt tat ca sāgare prākṣipan
nagare ca āhukasya vacanāt aghoṣayan
17. And men, by the king's command, threw that into the ocean. And they also proclaimed in the city on the instruction of Āhuka.
अद्य प्रभृति सर्वेषु वृष्ण्यन्धकगृहेष्विह ।
सुरासवो न कर्तव्यः सर्वैर्नगरवासिभिः ॥१८॥
18. adya prabhṛti sarveṣu vṛṣṇyandhakagṛheṣviha ,
surāsavo na kartavyaḥ sarvairnagaravāsibhiḥ.
18. adya prabhṛti sarveṣu vṛṣṇyandhakagṛheṣu iha
surāsavaḥ na kartavyaḥ sarvaiḥ nagaravāsibhiḥ
18. adya prabhṛti iha sarveṣu vṛṣṇyandhakagṛheṣu
sarvaiḥ nagaravāsibhiḥ surāsavaḥ na kartavyaḥ
18. From today onwards, in all homes of the Vṛṣṇis and Andhakas here, fermented liquor (surāsava) should not be made or consumed by any of the city residents.
यश्च नोऽविदितं कुर्यात्पेयं कश्चिन्नरः क्वचित् ।
जीवन्स शूलमारोहेत्स्वयं कृत्वा सबान्धवः ॥१९॥
19. yaśca no'viditaṁ kuryātpeyaṁ kaścinnaraḥ kvacit ,
jīvansa śūlamārohetsvayaṁ kṛtvā sabāndhavaḥ.
19. yaḥ ca naḥ aviditam kuryāt peyam kaścit naraḥ kvacit
jīvan saḥ śūlam ārohet svayam kṛtvā sabāndhavaḥ
19. yaḥ ca kaścit naraḥ kvacit naḥ aviditam peyam kuryāt,
saḥ jīvan sabāndhavaḥ svayam kṛtvā śūlam ārohet
19. And any man who, anywhere, without our knowledge, prepares any intoxicating drink (peyam), he himself, while still alive, shall be impaled on a stake along with his relatives.
ततो राजभयात्सर्वे नियमं चक्रिरे तदा ।
नराः शासनमाज्ञाय तस्य राज्ञो महात्मनः ॥२०॥
20. tato rājabhayātsarve niyamaṁ cakrire tadā ,
narāḥ śāsanamājñāya tasya rājño mahātmanaḥ.
20. tataḥ rājabhayāt sarve niyamam cakrire tadā
narāḥ śāsanam ājñāya tasya rājñaḥ mahātmanaḥ
20. tataḥ rājabhayāt sarve narāḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
rājñaḥ śāsanam ājñāya tadā niyamam cakrire
20. Then, out of fear of the king, all the people, understanding the command of that noble (mahātman) king, established this regulation at that time.
