युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अस्मानभिगतांस्तात भयार्ताञ्शरणैषिणः ।
कौरवान्विषमप्राप्तान्कथं ब्रूयास्त्वमीदृशम् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
asmānabhigatāṁstāta bhayārtāñśaraṇaiṣiṇaḥ ,
kauravānviṣamaprāptānkathaṁ brūyāstvamīdṛśam.
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca asmān abhigatān tāta bhayārtān śaraṇaiṣiṇaḥ
kauravān viṣamaprāptān katham brūyāḥ tvam īdṛśam
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "My dear (tāta), how can you speak such words regarding us, who have arrived, afflicted by fear and seeking refuge, and also regarding the Kauravas, who have fallen into distress?"
भवन्ति भेदा ज्ञातीनां कलहाश्च वृकोदर ।
प्रसक्तानि च वैराणि ज्ञातिधर्मो न नश्यति ॥२॥
2. bhavanti bhedā jñātīnāṁ kalahāśca vṛkodara ,
prasaktāni ca vairāṇi jñātidharmo na naśyati.
2. bhavanti bhedāḥ jñātīnām kalahāḥ ca vṛkodara
prasaktāni ca vairāṇi jñātidharmaḥ na naśyati
2. O Vṛkodara, divisions, quarrels, and persistent enmities arise among relatives. Still, the intrinsic nature (dharma) of the kinsmen does not perish.
यदा तु कश्चिज्ज्ञातीनां बाह्यः प्रार्थयते कुलम् ।
न मर्षयन्ति तत्सन्तो बाह्येनाभिप्रमर्षणम् ॥३॥
3. yadā tu kaścijjñātīnāṁ bāhyaḥ prārthayate kulam ,
na marṣayanti tatsanto bāhyenābhipramarṣaṇam.
3. yadā tu kaścit jñātīnām bāhyaḥ prārthayate kulam
na marṣayanti tat santaḥ bāhyena abhipramarṣaṇam
3. But when an outsider seeks to encroach upon the family of kinsmen, the virtuous do not tolerate such an infringement by an outsider.
जानाति ह्येष दुर्बुद्धिरस्मानिह चिरोषितान् ।
स एष परिभूयास्मानकार्षीदिदमप्रियम् ॥४॥
4. jānāti hyeṣa durbuddhirasmāniha ciroṣitān ,
sa eṣa paribhūyāsmānakārṣīdidamapriyam.
4. jānāti hi eṣaḥ durbuddhiḥ asmān iha ciroṣitān
saḥ eṣaḥ paribhūya asmān akārṣīt idam apriyam
4. Indeed, this evil-minded person knows that we have been residing here for a long time. This very person, having humiliated us, has done this disagreeable deed.
दुर्योधनस्य ग्रहणाद्गन्धर्वेण बलाद्रणे ।
स्त्रीणां बाह्याभिमर्शाच्च हतं भवति नः कुलम् ॥५॥
5. duryodhanasya grahaṇādgandharveṇa balādraṇe ,
strīṇāṁ bāhyābhimarśācca hataṁ bhavati naḥ kulam.
5. duryodhanasya grahaṇāt gandharveṇa balāt raṇe
strīṇām bāhyābhimarśāt ca hatam bhavati naḥ kulam
5. Our family (lineage) is ruined by Duryodhana's forceful capture in battle by a Gandharva, and by the external molestation of our women.
शरणं च प्रपन्नानां त्राणार्थं च कुलस्य नः ।
उत्तिष्ठध्वं नरव्याघ्राः सज्जीभवत माचिरम् ॥६॥
6. śaraṇaṁ ca prapannānāṁ trāṇārthaṁ ca kulasya naḥ ,
uttiṣṭhadhvaṁ naravyāghrāḥ sajjībhavata māciram.
6. śaraṇam ca prapannānām trāṇārtham ca kulasya naḥ
uttiṣṭhadhvam naravyāghrāḥ sajjībhavata mā ciram
6. O tigers among men, arise! Prepare yourselves without delay for the protection of our family (kula) and for those who have sought refuge.
अर्जुनश्च यमौ चैव त्वं च भीमापराजितः ।
मोक्षयध्वं धार्तराष्ट्रं ह्रियमाणं सुयोधनम् ॥७॥
7. arjunaśca yamau caiva tvaṁ ca bhīmāparājitaḥ ,
mokṣayadhvaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraṁ hriyamāṇaṁ suyodhanam.
7. arjunaḥ ca yamau ca eva tvam ca bhīma aparājitaḥ
mokṣayadhvam dhārtarāṣṭram hriyamāṇam suyodhanam
7. Arjuna, the twins, and you, unconquered Bhīma, set free Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, Suyodhana, who is being carried away.
एते रथा नरव्याघ्राः सर्वशस्त्रसमन्विताः ।
इन्द्रसेनादिभिः सूतैः संयताः कनकध्वजाः ॥८॥
8. ete rathā naravyāghrāḥ sarvaśastrasamanvitāḥ ,
indrasenādibhiḥ sūtaiḥ saṁyatāḥ kanakadhvajāḥ.
8. ete rathāḥ naravyāghrāḥ sarvaśastrasamanvitāḥ
indrasenādibhiḥ sūtaiḥ saṃyatāḥ kanakadhvajāḥ
8. O tigers among men, these chariots, equipped with all weapons and bearing golden banners, have been readied by Indra Sena and other charioteers.
एतानास्थाय वै तात गन्धर्वान्योद्धुमाहवे ।
सुयोधनस्य मोक्षाय प्रयतध्वमतन्द्रिताः ॥९॥
9. etānāsthāya vai tāta gandharvānyoddhumāhave ,
suyodhanasya mokṣāya prayatadhvamatandritāḥ.
9. etān āsthāya vai tāta gandharvān yoddhum āhave
suyodhanasya mokṣāya prayatadhvam atandritāḥ
9. Indeed, my dear, mount these chariots and strive diligently to fight the Gandharvas in battle for Suyodhana's release.
य एव कश्चिद्राजन्यः शरणार्थमिहागतम् ।
परं शक्त्याभिरक्षेत किं पुनस्त्वं वृकोदर ॥१०॥
10. ya eva kaścidrājanyaḥ śaraṇārthamihāgatam ,
paraṁ śaktyābhirakṣeta kiṁ punastvaṁ vṛkodara.
10. yá eva kaścit rājanyaḥ śaraṇārtham iha āgatam
param śaktyā abhirakṣeta kim punaḥ tvam vṛkodara
10. Any kṣatriya should protect with utmost strength one who has come here seeking refuge. How much more should you, Vṛkodara (Bhīma), do so?
क इहान्यो भवेत्त्राणमभिधावेति चोदितः ।
प्राञ्जलिं शरणापन्नं दृष्ट्वा शत्रुमपि ध्रुवम् ॥११॥
11. ka ihānyo bhavettrāṇamabhidhāveti coditaḥ ,
prāñjaliṁ śaraṇāpannaṁ dṛṣṭvā śatrumapi dhruvam.
11. kaḥ iha anyaḥ bhavet trāṇam abhidhāva iti coditaḥ
prāñjalim śaraṇāpannam dṛṣṭvā śatrum api dhruvam
11. Who else here could be a protector when urged with "come quickly!" upon seeing even a definite enemy who has approached with folded hands seeking refuge?
वरप्रदानं राज्यं च पुत्रजन्म च पाण्डव ।
शत्रोश्च मोक्षणं क्लेशात्त्रीणि चैकं च तत्समम् ॥१२॥
12. varapradānaṁ rājyaṁ ca putrajanma ca pāṇḍava ,
śatrośca mokṣaṇaṁ kleśāttrīṇi caikaṁ ca tatsamam.
12. varapradānam rājyam ca putrajanma ca pāṇḍava śatroḥ
ca mokṣaṇam kleśāt trīṇi ca ekam ca tat samam
12. O Pāṇḍava, granting a boon, obtaining a kingdom, and the birth of a son - these three, and the liberation (mokṣaṇam) of an enemy from distress, that one (act) is equal to them.
किं ह्यभ्यधिकमेतस्माद्यदापन्नः सुयोधनः ।
त्वद्बाहुबलमाश्रित्य जीवितं परिमार्गति ॥१३॥
13. kiṁ hyabhyadhikametasmādyadāpannaḥ suyodhanaḥ ,
tvadbāhubalamāśritya jīvitaṁ parimārgati.
13. kim hi abhyadhikam etasmāt yat āpannaḥ suyodhanaḥ
tvat bāhubalam āśritya jīvitam parimārgati
13. What, indeed, could be more meritorious than this, when Suyodhana (Duryodhana), having fallen into distress, seeks his life, relying on the strength of your arms?
स्वयमेव प्रधावेयं यदि न स्याद्वृकोदर ।
विततोऽयं क्रतुर्वीर न हि मेऽत्र विचारणा ॥१४॥
14. svayameva pradhāveyaṁ yadi na syādvṛkodara ,
vitato'yaṁ kraturvīra na hi me'tra vicāraṇā.
14. svayam eva pradhāveyam yadi na syāt vṛkodara
vitataḥ ayam kratuḥ vīra na hi me atra vicāraṇā
14. I myself would certainly rush forward if Vṛkodara (Bhīma) were not present. O hero, this undertaking is extensive, and indeed, I have no doubt regarding it.
साम्नैव तु यथा भीम मोक्षयेथाः सुयोधनम् ।
तथा सर्वैरुपायैस्त्वं यतेथाः कुरुनन्दन ॥१५॥
15. sāmnaiva tu yathā bhīma mokṣayethāḥ suyodhanam ,
tathā sarvairupāyaistvaṁ yatethāḥ kurunandana.
15. sāmnā eva tu yathā bhīma mokṣayethāḥ suyodhanam
tathā sarvaiḥ upāyaiḥ tvam yatethāḥ kurunandana
15. But O Bhīma, just as you should release Suyodhana by conciliatory means, so also, O delight of the Kurus, you should strive by all possible means.
न साम्ना प्रतिपद्येत यदि गन्धर्वराडसौ ।
पराक्रमेण मृदुना मोक्षयेथाः सुयोधनम् ॥१६॥
16. na sāmnā pratipadyeta yadi gandharvarāḍasau ,
parākrameṇa mṛdunā mokṣayethāḥ suyodhanam.
16. na sāmnā pratipadyeta yadi gandharvarāṭ asau
parākrameṇa mṛdunā mokṣayethāḥ suyodhanam
16. If that king of the Gandharvas does not yield to conciliatory means, then you should release Suyodhana by gentle force.
अथासौ मृदुयुद्धेन न मुञ्चेद्भीम कौरवान् ।
सर्वोपायैर्विमोच्यास्ते निगृह्य परिपन्थिनः ॥१७॥
17. athāsau mṛduyuddhena na muñcedbhīma kauravān ,
sarvopāyairvimocyāste nigṛhya paripanthinaḥ.
17. atha asau mṛduyuddhena na muñcet bhīma kauravān
sarvaiḥ upāyaiḥ vimocyāḥ te nigṛhya paripanthinaḥ
17. Then, O Bhīma, if that one does not release the Kauravas even with a gentle fight, those enemies must be subdued, and then the Kauravas are to be released by all possible means.
एतावद्धि मया शक्यं संदेष्टुं वै वृकोदर ।
वैताने कर्मणि तते वर्तमाने च भारत ॥१८॥
18. etāvaddhi mayā śakyaṁ saṁdeṣṭuṁ vai vṛkodara ,
vaitāne karmaṇi tate vartamāne ca bhārata.
18. etāvat hi mayā śakyam saṃdeṣṭum vai vṛkodara
vaitāne karmaṇi tate vartamāne ca bhārata
18. Indeed, this much is all I can instruct you, O Vṛkodara, regarding the Vedic ritual (karma) that is currently being performed, O Bhārata.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अजातशत्रोर्वचनं तच्छ्रुत्वा तु धनंजयः ।
प्रतिजज्ञे गुरोर्वाक्यं कौरवाणां विमोक्षणम् ॥१९॥
19. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ajātaśatrorvacanaṁ tacchrutvā tu dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
pratijajñe gurorvākyaṁ kauravāṇāṁ vimokṣaṇam.
19. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca ajātaśatroḥ vacanam tat śrutvā tu
dhanaṃjayaḥ pratijajñe guroḥ vākyam kauravāṇām vimokṣaṇam
19. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'Having heard those words of Ajātaśatru (Yudhishthira), Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna) then swore to fulfill his elder's command to liberate (mokṣa) the Kauravas.'
अर्जुन उवाच ।
यदि साम्ना न मोक्ष्यन्ति गन्धर्वा धृतराष्ट्रजान् ।
अद्य गन्धर्वराजस्य भूमिः पास्यति शोणितम् ॥२०॥
20. arjuna uvāca ,
yadi sāmnā na mokṣyanti gandharvā dhṛtarāṣṭrajān ,
adya gandharvarājasya bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam.
20. arjuna uvāca yadi sāmnā na mokṣyanti gandharvāḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭrajān adya gandharvarājasya bhūmiḥ pāsyati śoṇitam
20. Arjuna said: 'If the Gandharvas do not release the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra through conciliation, then today the earth will drink the blood of the Gandharva king.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अर्जुनस्य तु तां श्रुत्वा प्रतिज्ञां सत्यवादिनः ।
कौरवाणां तदा राजन्पुनः प्रत्यागतं मनः ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
arjunasya tu tāṁ śrutvā pratijñāṁ satyavādinaḥ ,
kauravāṇāṁ tadā rājanpunaḥ pratyāgataṁ manaḥ.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca arjunasya tu tām śrutvā pratijñām
satyavādinaḥ kauravāṇām tadā rājan punaḥ pratyāgatam manaḥ
21. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: 'O King, after hearing that vow from the truth-speaking Arjuna, the Kauravas' spirits then revived (returned to them) once more.'
