वैशंपायन उवाच ।
प्रायोपविष्टं राजानं दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
उवाच सान्त्वयन्राजञ्शकुनिः सौबलस्तदा ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
prāyopaviṣṭaṁ rājānaṁ duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
uvāca sāntvayanrājañśakuniḥ saubalastadā.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Then Śakuni, son of Subala, pacifying King Duryodhana, who was fasting unto death and full of indignation, spoke to him.
सम्यगुक्तं हि कर्णेन तच्छ्रुतं कौरव त्वया ।
मयाहृतां श्रियं स्फीतां मोहात्समपहाय किम् ।
त्वमबुद्ध्या नृपवर प्राणानुत्स्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥२॥
2. samyaguktaṁ hi karṇena tacchrutaṁ kaurava tvayā ,
mayāhṛtāṁ śriyaṁ sphītāṁ mohātsamapahāya kim ,
tvamabuddhyā nṛpavara prāṇānutsraṣṭumicchasi.
2. samyak uktam hi karṇena tat śrutam
kaurava tvayā mayā āhṛtām śriyam sphītām
mohāt samapahāya kim tvam abuddhyā
nṛpavara prāṇān utsraṣṭum icchasi
2. O Kuru, Karṇa's words were indeed well-spoken, and you heard them. Why, O best of kings, out of delusion and foolishness (abuddhyā), do you wish to abandon the vast prosperity (śrī) I acquired and give up your life?
अद्य चाप्यवगच्छामि न वृद्धाः सेवितास्त्वया ।
यः समुत्पतितं हर्षं दैन्यं वा न नियच्छति ।
स नश्यति श्रियं प्राप्य पात्रमाममिवाम्भसि ॥३॥
3. adya cāpyavagacchāmi na vṛddhāḥ sevitāstvayā ,
yaḥ samutpatitaṁ harṣaṁ dainyaṁ vā na niyacchati ,
sa naśyati śriyaṁ prāpya pātramāmamivāmbhasi.
3. adya ca api avagacchāmi na vṛddhāḥ
sevitāḥ tvayā yaḥ samutpatitam harṣam
dainyam vā na niyacchati sa naśyati
śriyam prāpya pātram āmam iva ambhasi
3. Today, I also understand that you have not truly served (listened to the counsel of) the elders. Indeed, one who does not restrain their rising joy or dejection perishes, even after acquiring prosperity (śrī), just like an unbaked earthen pot (pātram āmam) disintegrates in water (ambhasi).
अतिभीरुमतिक्लीबं दीर्घसूत्रं प्रमादिनम् ।
व्यसनाद्विषयाक्रान्तं न भजन्ति नृपं श्रियः ॥४॥
4. atibhīrumatiklībaṁ dīrghasūtraṁ pramādinam ,
vyasanādviṣayākrāntaṁ na bhajanti nṛpaṁ śriyaḥ.
4. atibhīrum atiklībam dīrghasūtram pramādinam
vyasanāt viṣayākrāntam na bhajanti nṛpam śriyaḥ
4. Fortunes (śrī) do not favor a king who is excessively timid, extremely cowardly, procrastinating, negligent, and enslaved by sensual objects (viṣaya) or addictions.
सत्कृतस्य हि ते शोको विपरीते कथं भवेत् ।
मा कृतं शोभनं पार्थैः शोकमालम्ब्य नाशय ॥५॥
5. satkṛtasya hi te śoko viparīte kathaṁ bhavet ,
mā kṛtaṁ śobhanaṁ pārthaiḥ śokamālambya nāśaya.
5. satkṛtasya hi te śokaḥ viparīte katham bhavet
mā kṛtam śobhanam pārthaiḥ śokam ālambya nāśaya
5. Indeed, how can there be sorrow (śoka) for you regarding those who are honored, when the situation is actually the opposite of what would cause grief? Do not destroy the good deeds performed by the Pārthas by clinging to sorrow (śoka).
यत्र हर्षस्त्वया कार्यः सत्कर्तव्याश्च पाण्डवाः ।
तत्र शोचसि राजेन्द्र विपरीतमिदं तव ॥६॥
6. yatra harṣastvayā kāryaḥ satkartavyāśca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tatra śocasi rājendra viparītamidaṁ tava.
6. yatra harṣaḥ tvayā kāryaḥ satkartavyāḥ ca pāṇḍavāḥ
tatra śocasi rājendra viparītam idam tava
6. O king of kings (rājendra), you grieve in a situation where you should feel joy and where the Pāṇḍavas ought to be honored. This conduct of yours is indeed contrary to what is appropriate.
प्रसीद मा त्यजात्मानं तुष्टश्च सुकृतं स्मर ।
प्रयच्छ राज्यं पार्थानां यशो धर्ममवाप्नुहि ॥७॥
7. prasīda mā tyajātmānaṁ tuṣṭaśca sukṛtaṁ smara ,
prayaccha rājyaṁ pārthānāṁ yaśo dharmamavāpnuhi.
7. prasīda mā tyaja ātmanam tuṣṭaḥ ca sukṛtam smara
prayaccha rājyam pārthānām yaśaḥ dharmam avāpnuhi
7. Be gracious! Do not abandon yourself (ātman). Be content and remember your good deeds. Grant the kingdom to the Pārthas, and thereby attain fame (yaśas) and righteousness (dharma).
क्रियामेतां समाज्ञाय कृतघ्नो न भविष्यसि ।
सौभ्रात्रं पाण्डवैः कृत्वा समवस्थाप्य चैव तान् ।
पित्र्यं राज्यं प्रयच्छैषां ततः सुखमवाप्नुहि ॥८॥
8. kriyāmetāṁ samājñāya kṛtaghno na bhaviṣyasi ,
saubhrātraṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtvā samavasthāpya caiva tān ,
pitryaṁ rājyaṁ prayacchaiṣāṁ tataḥ sukhamavāpnuhi.
8. kriyām etām samājñāya kṛtaghnaḥ na
bhaviṣyasi saubhrātram pāṇḍavaiḥ kṛtvā
samavasthāpya ca eva tān pitryam rājyam
prayaccha eṣām tataḥ sukham avāpnuhi
8. By understanding this course of action, you will avoid being ungrateful. After establishing brotherhood with the Pāṇḍavas and properly settling them, give them their ancestral kingdom; then you will attain happiness.
शकुनेस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा दुःशासनमवेक्ष्य च ।
पादयोः पतितं वीरं विक्लवं भ्रातृसौहृदात् ॥९॥
9. śakunestu vacaḥ śrutvā duḥśāsanamavekṣya ca ,
pādayoḥ patitaṁ vīraṁ viklavaṁ bhrātṛsauhṛdāt.
9. śakuneḥ tu vacaḥ śrutvā duḥśāsanam avekṣya ca
pādayoḥ patitam vīram viklavam bhrātṛsauhṛdāt
9. But having heard Śakuni's words, and seeing the brave Duḥśāsana — overwhelmed with distress from brotherly affection — fallen at his feet...
बाहुभ्यां साधुजाताभ्यां दुःशासनमरिंदमम् ।
उत्थाप्य संपरिष्वज्य प्रीत्याजिघ्रत मूर्धनि ॥१०॥
10. bāhubhyāṁ sādhujātābhyāṁ duḥśāsanamariṁdamam ,
utthāpya saṁpariṣvajya prītyājighrata mūrdhani.
10. bāhubhyām sādhujātābhyām duḥśāsanam arimdamam
utthāpya sampariṣvajya prītyā ājighrata mūrdhani
10. With his strong arms, he raised Duḥśāsana, the subduer of enemies; embracing him, he then lovingly kissed him on the head.
कर्णसौबलयोश्चापि संस्मृत्य वचनान्यसौ ।
निर्वेदं परमं गत्वा राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा ।
व्रीडयाभिपरीतात्मा नैराश्यमगमत्परम् ॥११॥
11. karṇasaubalayoścāpi saṁsmṛtya vacanānyasau ,
nirvedaṁ paramaṁ gatvā rājā duryodhanastadā ,
vrīḍayābhiparītātmā nairāśyamagamatparam.
11. karṇasaubalayoh ca api samsmṛtya
vacanāni asau nirvedam paramam gatvā
rājā duryodhanaḥ tadā vrīḍayā
abhiparītātmā nairāśyam agamat paramam
11. Then, King Duryodhana, recalling the words of Karṇa and Śakuni (Subala's son), became extremely despondent. His mind was overwhelmed with shame, and he succumbed to utter despair.
सुहृदां चैव तच्छ्रुत्वा समन्युरिदमब्रवीत् ।
न धर्मधनसौख्येन नैश्वर्येण न चाज्ञया ।
नैव भोगैश्च मे कार्यं मा विहन्यत गच्छत ॥१२॥
12. suhṛdāṁ caiva tacchrutvā samanyuridamabravīt ,
na dharmadhanasaukhyena naiśvaryeṇa na cājñayā ,
naiva bhogaiśca me kāryaṁ mā vihanyata gacchata.
12. suhṛdām ca eva tat śrutvā samanyuḥ idam
abravīt na dharmadhanasaukhyena na
aiśvaryeṇa na ca ājñayā na eva bhogaiḥ
ca me kāryam mā vihanyata gacchata
12. Having heard that, he, enraged, spoke these words: "I have no concern with righteous action (dharma), wealth, or happiness, nor with sovereignty, nor with command, nor indeed with pleasures. Do not hinder me; go!"
निश्चितेयं मम मतिः स्थिता प्रायोपवेशने ।
गच्छध्वं नगरं सर्वे पूज्याश्च गुरवो मम ॥१३॥
13. niściteyaṁ mama matiḥ sthitā prāyopaveśane ,
gacchadhvaṁ nagaraṁ sarve pūjyāśca guravo mama.
13. niścitā iyam mama matiḥ sthitā prāyopaveśane
gacchadhvam nagaram sarve pūjyāḥ ca guravaḥ mama
13. This resolve of mine is firmly fixed upon a fast unto death (prāyopaveśana). All of you, my venerable elders (guru), go to the city.
त एवमुक्ताः प्रत्यूचू राजानमरिमर्दनम् ।
या गतिस्तव राजेन्द्र सास्माकमपि भारत ।
कथं वा संप्रवेक्ष्यामस्त्वद्विहीनाः पुरं वयम् ॥१४॥
14. ta evamuktāḥ pratyūcū rājānamarimardanam ,
yā gatistava rājendra sāsmākamapi bhārata ,
kathaṁ vā saṁpravekṣyāmastvadvihīnāḥ puraṁ vayam.
14. te evam uktāḥ pratyūcuḥ rājānam
arimardanam yā gatiḥ tava rājendra sā
asmākam api bhārata katham vā
sampravekṣyāmaḥ tvat vihīnāḥ puram vayam
14. Thus addressed, they replied to the king, the destroyer of foes (arimardana): "O king of kings (rājendra), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), whatever destiny awaits you, that same destiny also awaits us. How, indeed, could we enter the city without you?"
स सुहृद्भिरमात्यैश्च भ्रातृभिः स्वजनेन च ।
बहुप्रकारमप्युक्तो निश्चयान्न व्यचाल्यत ॥१५॥
15. sa suhṛdbhiramātyaiśca bhrātṛbhiḥ svajanena ca ,
bahuprakāramapyukto niścayānna vyacālyata.
15. sa suhṛdbhiḥ amātyaiḥ ca bhrātṛbhiḥ svajanena ca
bahuprakāram api uktaḥ niścayāt na vyacālyata
15. Even though he was advised in many ways by his friends, ministers, brothers, and his own kinsmen, he was not swayed from his firm resolve.
दर्भप्रस्तरमास्तीर्य निश्चयाद्धृतराष्ट्रजः ।
संस्पृश्यापः शुचिर्भूत्वा भूतलं समुपाश्रितः ॥१६॥
16. darbhaprastaramāstīrya niścayāddhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ ,
saṁspṛśyāpaḥ śucirbhūtvā bhūtalaṁ samupāśritaḥ.
16. darbhaprastaram āstīrya niścayāt dhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ
saṃspṛśya āpaḥ śuciḥ bhūtvā bhūtalam samupāśritaḥ
16. The son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana), with determination, spread a layer of kusha grass, and after touching water and becoming pure, sat down upon the ground.
कुशचीराम्बरधरः परं नियममास्थितः ।
वाग्यतो राजशार्दूलः स स्वर्गगतिकाङ्क्षया ।
मनसोपचितिं कृत्वा निरस्य च बहिष्क्रियाः ॥१७॥
17. kuśacīrāmbaradharaḥ paraṁ niyamamāsthitaḥ ,
vāgyato rājaśārdūlaḥ sa svargagatikāṅkṣayā ,
manasopacitiṁ kṛtvā nirasya ca bahiṣkriyāḥ.
17. kuśacīrāmbaradharaḥ param niyamam
āsthitaḥ vāgyataḥ rājaśārdūlaḥ
saḥ svargagatikāṅkṣayā manasā upacitim
kṛtvā nirasya ca bahiṣkriyāḥ
17. Wearing garments of kusha grass and bark, and having adopted a strict vow, he (Duryodhana), who was restrained in speech and a tiger among kings, performed mental concentration (dhyāna) with a desire for the attainment of heaven (svarga), and renounced all external activities.
अथ तं निश्चयं तस्य बुद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवाः ।
पातालवासिनो रौद्राः पूर्वं देवैर्विनिर्जिताः ॥१८॥
18. atha taṁ niścayaṁ tasya buddhvā daiteyadānavāḥ ,
pātālavāsino raudrāḥ pūrvaṁ devairvinirjitāḥ.
18. atha tam niścayam tasya buddhvā daiteyadānavāḥ
pātālavāsinaḥ raudrāḥ pūrvam devaiḥ vinirjitāḥ
18. Then, the fierce Daityas and Danavas (demons), dwellers of Patala who had previously been defeated by the gods, having understood his (Duryodhana's) resolve (niscaya),
ते स्वपक्षक्षयं तं तु ज्ञात्वा दुर्योधनस्य वै ।
आह्वानाय तदा चक्रुः कर्म वैतानसंभवम् ॥१९॥
19. te svapakṣakṣayaṁ taṁ tu jñātvā duryodhanasya vai ,
āhvānāya tadā cakruḥ karma vaitānasaṁbhavam.
19. te svapakṣakṣayam tam tu jñātvā duryodhanasya
vai āhvānāya tadā cakruḥ karma vaitānasaṃbhavam
19. Indeed, having then understood the destruction of their own faction that was impending for Duryodhana, they performed a Vedic ritual (yajña) for the purpose of invoking aid.
बृहस्पत्युशनोक्तैश्च मन्त्रैर्मन्त्रविशारदाः ।
अथर्ववेदप्रोक्तैश्च याश्चोपनिषदि क्रियाः ।
मन्त्रजप्यसमायुक्तास्तास्तदा समवर्तयन् ॥२०॥
20. bṛhaspatyuśanoktaiśca mantrairmantraviśāradāḥ ,
atharvavedaproktaiśca yāścopaniṣadi kriyāḥ ,
mantrajapyasamāyuktāstāstadā samavartayan.
20. bṛhaspati-uśana-uktaiḥ ca mantraiḥ
mantra-viśāradāḥ atharvaveda-proktaiḥ
ca yāḥ ca upaniṣadi kriyāḥ
mantra-jāpya-samāyuktāḥ tāḥ tadā samavartayan
20. Then, the experts in sacred formulas (mantra) performed all those rites (kriyā) and practices which are taught by Bṛhaspati and Uśanas, proclaimed in the Atharvaveda, and found in the Upaniṣads, all of them combined with the chanting (jāpya) of sacred formulas (mantra).
जुह्वत्यग्नौ हविः क्षीरं मन्त्रवत्सुसमाहिताः ।
ब्राह्मणा वेदवेदाङ्गपारगाः सुदृढव्रताः ॥२१॥
21. juhvatyagnau haviḥ kṣīraṁ mantravatsusamāhitāḥ ,
brāhmaṇā vedavedāṅgapāragāḥ sudṛḍhavratāḥ.
21. juhvati agnau haviḥ kṣīram mantra-vat su-samāhitāḥ
brāhmaṇā veda-vedāṅga-pāragāḥ su-dṛḍha-vratāḥ
21. The Brahmins, who were masters of the Vedas and their auxiliary branches (Vedangas) and observed very firm vows, offered milk and oblations (haviḥ) into the fire, attentively chanting the sacred formulas (mantra).
कर्मसिद्धौ तदा तत्र जृम्भमाणा महाद्भुता ।
कृत्या समुत्थिता राजन्किं करोमीति चाब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. karmasiddhau tadā tatra jṛmbhamāṇā mahādbhutā ,
kṛtyā samutthitā rājankiṁ karomīti cābravīt.
22. karma-siddhau tadā tatra jṛmbhamāṇā mahā-adbhutā
kṛtyā samutthitā rājan kim karomi iti ca abravīt
22. Then, with the completion of the ritual (karma), a tremendously wondrous magical being (kṛtyā) manifested there and arose, saying, "O King, what shall I do?"
आहुर्दैत्याश्च तां तत्र सुप्रीतेनान्तरात्मना ।
प्रायोपविष्टं राजानं धार्तराष्ट्रमिहानय ॥२३॥
23. āhurdaityāśca tāṁ tatra suprītenāntarātmanā ,
prāyopaviṣṭaṁ rājānaṁ dhārtarāṣṭramihānaya.
23. āhuḥ daityāḥ ca tām tatra su-prītena antara-ātmanā
prāyopaviṣṭam rājānam dhārtarāṣṭram iha ānaya
23. And the Daityas, with their inner selves (ātman) greatly pleased, instructed her there: "Bring here King Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), who has undertaken a fast unto death."
तथेति च प्रतिश्रुत्य सा कृत्या प्रययौ तदा ।
निमेषादगमच्चापि यत्र राजा सुयोधनः ॥२४॥
24. tatheti ca pratiśrutya sā kṛtyā prayayau tadā ,
nimeṣādagamaccāpi yatra rājā suyodhanaḥ.
24. tathā iti ca pratiśrutya sā kṛtyā prayayau tadā
nimeṣāt agamat ca api yatra rājā suyodhanaḥ
24. And having promised, "So be it!", Kṛtyā then set out. In the blink of an eye, she also reached the place where King Suyodhana (Duryodhana) was.
समादाय च राजानं प्रविवेश रसातलम् ।
दानवानां मुहूर्ताच्च तमानीतं न्यवेदयत् ॥२५॥
25. samādāya ca rājānaṁ praviveśa rasātalam ,
dānavānāṁ muhūrtācca tamānītaṁ nyavedayat.
25. samādāya ca rājānam praviveśa rasātalam
dānavānām muhūrtāt ca tam ānītam nyavedayat
25. And having taken the king, she entered Rasātala. Within a moment, she announced to the Dānavas that he had been brought.
तमानीतं नृपं दृष्ट्वा रात्रौ संहत्य दानवाः ।
प्रहृष्टमनसः सर्वे किंचिदुत्फुल्ललोचनाः ।
साभिमानमिदं वाक्यं दुर्योधनमथाब्रुवन् ॥२६॥
26. tamānītaṁ nṛpaṁ dṛṣṭvā rātrau saṁhatya dānavāḥ ,
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve kiṁcidutphullalocanāḥ ,
sābhimānamidaṁ vākyaṁ duryodhanamathābruvan.
26. tam ānītam nṛpam dṛṣṭvā rātrau saṃhatya
dānavāḥ prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ sarve
kiṃcit utphullalocanāḥ sābhimānam
idam vākyam duryodhanam atha abruvan
26. Having seen that king brought, the Dānavas, gathered at night, all with highly delighted minds and slightly wide-open eyes, then spoke these proud words to Duryodhana.
