Sañjaya said: "O King, listen to me describe the amazing battle, and how the war of the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas transpired."

The Pāṇḍavas, wishing to break through Droṇa's army, approached Bhāradvāja (Droṇa), who stood at the vanguard of the formation, and fought in that battle.

And Droṇa's soldiers also, protecting their own formation and desiring great glory, fought the Pārthas in battle.

The two princes of Avanti, Vinda and Anuvinda, who were extremely enraged and desired the welfare of your son, struck Virata with ten arrows.

Their terrible battle, where blood flowed like water, took place, resembling a lion's combat in a forest with two highly enraged, ichor-oozing chief elephants.

In battle, the exceedingly mighty Yājñaseni struck the impetuous Bahlika with sharp, dreadful arrows that could pierce vital spots and bones.

Enraged, Bahlika intensely struck Draupadī (Yājñasenī) with nine arrows that were golden-shafted, sharpened on stone, and well-knotted.

That battle became dreadful, filled with arrows and spears (śakti); it caused terror for the timid, but increased the joy of the brave.

There, by the arrows released by those two (warriors), the sky and all the directions became entirely covered, and nothing could be perceived.

11.
Just as an elephant fights another elephant, so too in that battle, Shaibya Govasana, along with his army, fought against Kashyaputra, the great charioteer.

12.
The king of Bāhlīka, enraged, shone splendidly in battle as he fought the great chariot-warriors, the sons of Draupadī, just as the mind battles the five senses.

13.
And they (the sons of Draupadī) intensely fought him (the Bāhlīka king) with showers of arrows from all sides, just as sense objects constantly assail the body of embodied beings, O best among those who possess a body.

15.
Sātyaki, whose valor was true, deeply wounded by that powerful, great archer (Duḥśāsana), quickly experienced a slight faintness.

16.
Then, having been greatly reassured, the Vārṣṇeya (Sātyaki) quickly pierced your great chariot-warrior son with ten arrows, feathered with heron feathers.

O King, those two, severely pierced by each other and wounded by each other's arrows, shone in battle like two flowering palāśa (kimśuka) trees.

18.
But Alambusa, greatly enraged and distressed by Kuntibhoja's arrows, shone with exceptional splendor, like a palāśa (kimśuka) tree laden with flowers.

Then, having pierced Kuntibhoja with many iron arrows, the Rākṣasa (Alambusa) roared a terrible roar at the head of your army.

Then, all beings witnessed those two heroes fighting each other in battle, just as Indra and Jambha did in ancient times.
