संजय उवाच ।
तथा संभाषतां तेषां प्रादुरासीद्धनंजयः ।
दिदृक्षुर्भरतश्रेष्ठं राजानं ससुहृद्गणम् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
tathā saṁbhāṣatāṁ teṣāṁ prādurāsīddhanaṁjayaḥ ,
didṛkṣurbharataśreṣṭhaṁ rājānaṁ sasuhṛdgaṇam.

1. Sanjaya said: As they (the Pāṇḍavas) were conversing thus, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) appeared, desirous of seeing the king, the best of the Bharatas (Yudhishthira), along with his retinue of friends.
तं प्रविष्टं शुभां कक्ष्यामभिवाद्याग्रतः स्थितम् ।
समुत्थायार्जुनं प्रेम्णा सस्वजे पाण्डवर्षभः ॥२॥
2. taṁ praviṣṭaṁ śubhāṁ kakṣyāmabhivādyāgrataḥ sthitam ,
samutthāyārjunaṁ premṇā sasvaje pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ.
2. tam praviṣṭam śubhām kakṣyām abhivādya agrataḥ sthitam
samutthāya arjunam premṇā sasvaje pāṇḍavarṣabhaḥ
2. When Arjuna entered the auspicious chamber and stood before him, the foremost of the Pāṇḍavas (Yudhishthira) rose, saluted him, and affectionately embraced Arjuna.
मूर्ध्नि चैनमुपाघ्राय परिष्वज्य च बाहुना ।
आशिषः परमाः प्रोच्य स्मयमानोऽभ्यभाषत ॥३॥
3. mūrdhni cainamupāghrāya pariṣvajya ca bāhunā ,
āśiṣaḥ paramāḥ procya smayamāno'bhyabhāṣata.
3. mūrdhni ca enam upāghrāya pariṣvajya ca bāhunā
āśiṣaḥ paramāḥ procya smayamānaḥ abhyabhāṣata

3. Smiling, and having kissed him on the head and embraced him with his arm, he spoke supreme blessings.
व्यक्तमर्जुन संग्रामे ध्रुवस्ते विजयो महान् ।
यादृग्रूपा हि ते छाया प्रसन्नश्च जनार्दनः ॥४॥
4. vyaktamarjuna saṁgrāme dhruvaste vijayo mahān ,
yādṛgrūpā hi te chāyā prasannaśca janārdanaḥ.
4. vyaktam arjuna saṃgrāme dhruvaḥ te vijayaḥ mahān
yādṛgrūpā hi te chāyā prasannaḥ ca janārdanaḥ
4. arjuna vyaktam te saṃgrāme mahān vijayaḥ dhruvaḥ

4. O Arjuna, your great victory in battle is certainly assured, for your aura (shadow) is of such a nature, and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) is gracious.
तमब्रवीत्ततो जिष्णुर्महदाश्चर्यमुत्तमम् ।
दृष्टवानस्मि भद्रं ते केशवस्य प्रसादजम् ॥५॥
5. tamabravīttato jiṣṇurmahadāścaryamuttamam ,
dṛṣṭavānasmi bhadraṁ te keśavasya prasādajam.
5. tam abravīt tataḥ jiṣṇuḥ mahat āścaryam uttamam
dṛṣṭavān asmi bhadram te keśavasya prasādajam
5. tataḥ jiṣṇuḥ tam abravīt (ahaṃ) keśavasya prasādajam mahat uttamam āścaryam dṛṣṭavān asmi,
te bhadram (astu)
5. Then Jiṣṇu (Arjuna) said to him, "I have witnessed a great and supreme marvel born of Keśava's (Kṛṣṇa's) grace. May good fortune be yours."
ततस्तत्कथयामास यथादृष्टं धनंजयः ।
आश्वासनार्थं सुहृदां त्र्यम्बकेन समागमम् ॥६॥
6. tatastatkathayāmāsa yathādṛṣṭaṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
āśvāsanārthaṁ suhṛdāṁ tryambakena samāgamam.
6. tataḥ tat kathayāmāsa yathādṛṣṭam dhanaṃjayaḥ
āśvāsanārtham suhṛdām tryambakena samāgamam
6. tataḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ suhṛdām āśvāsanārtham
yathādṛṣṭam tat tryambakena samāgamam kathayāmāsa
6. Then Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) narrated that meeting with Tryambaka (Śiva) exactly as he had seen it, for the reassurance of his friends.
ततः शिरोभिरवनिं स्पृष्ट्वा सर्वे च विस्मिताः ।
नमस्कृत्य वृषाङ्काय साधु साध्वित्यथाब्रुवन् ॥७॥
7. tataḥ śirobhiravaniṁ spṛṣṭvā sarve ca vismitāḥ ,
namaskṛtya vṛṣāṅkāya sādhu sādhvityathābruvan.
7. tataḥ śirobhiḥ avanim spṛṣṭvā sarve ca vismitāḥ
namaskṛtya vṛṣāṅkāya sādhu sādhu iti atha abruvan
7. tataḥ sarve ca vismitāḥ śirobhiḥ avanim spṛṣṭvā
vṛṣāṅkāya namaskṛtya sādhu sādhu iti atha abruvan
7. Then, all of them, astonished, touched the ground with their heads and, bowing to Śiva (vṛṣāṅkāya), exclaimed, 'Excellent! Excellent!'
अनुज्ञातास्ततः सर्वे सुहृदो धर्मसूनुना ।
त्वरमाणाः सुसंनद्धा हृष्टा युद्धाय निर्ययुः ॥८॥
8. anujñātāstataḥ sarve suhṛdo dharmasūnunā ,
tvaramāṇāḥ susaṁnaddhā hṛṣṭā yuddhāya niryayuḥ.
8. anujñātāḥ tataḥ sarve suhṛdaḥ dharmasūnunā
tvaramāṇāḥ susannaddhāḥ hṛṣṭāḥ yuddhāya niryayuḥ

8. Then, all the friends, having been given leave by Yudhiṣṭhira (dharmasūnunā), joyfully and well-prepared, hastened to set out for battle.
अभिवाद्य तु राजानं युयुधानाच्युतार्जुनाः ।
हृष्टा विनिर्ययुस्ते वै युधिष्ठिरनिवेशनात् ॥९॥
9. abhivādya tu rājānaṁ yuyudhānācyutārjunāḥ ,
hṛṣṭā viniryayuste vai yudhiṣṭhiraniveśanāt.
9. abhivādya tu rājānam yuyudhāna acyuta arjunāḥ
hṛṣṭāḥ viniryayuḥ te vai yudhiṣṭhiraniveśanāt
9. yuyudhāna acyuta arjunāḥ tu rājānam abhivādya

9. Having saluted the king (Yudhiṣṭhira), Yuyudhāna (Satyaki), Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), and Arjuna - they indeed, delighted, set out from Yudhiṣṭhira's abode.
रथेनैकेन दुर्धर्षौ युयुधानजनार्दनौ ।
जग्मतुः सहितौ वीरावर्जुनस्य निवेशनम् ॥१०॥
10. rathenaikena durdharṣau yuyudhānajanārdanau ,
jagmatuḥ sahitau vīrāvarjunasya niveśanam.
10. rathena ekena durdharṣau yuyudhāna janārdanau
jagmatuḥ sahitau vīrau arjunasya niveśanam
10. ekena rathena durdharṣau vīrau yuyudhāna
janārdanau sahitau arjunasya niveśanam jagmatuḥ
10. The two unconquerable heroes, Yuyudhāna (Satyaki) and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), went together by a single chariot to Arjuna's abode.
तत्र गत्वा हृषीकेशः कल्पयामास सूतवत् ।
रथं रथवरस्याजौ वानरर्षभलक्षणम् ॥११॥
11. tatra gatvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ kalpayāmāsa sūtavat ,
rathaṁ rathavarasyājau vānararṣabhalakṣaṇam.
11. tatra gatvā hṛṣīkeśaḥ kalpayāmāsa sūtavat
ratham rathavarasya ājau vānararṣabhalakṣaṇam
11. hṛṣīkeśaḥ tatra gatvā sūtavat,
ājau rathavarasya vānararṣabhalakṣaṇam ratham kalpayāmāsa
11. Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa), having gone there, prepared the chariot, adorned with the emblem of the supreme monkey (Hanumān), for the great warrior in battle, acting just like a charioteer.
स मेघसमनिर्घोषस्तप्तकाञ्चनसप्रभः ।
बभौ रथवरः कॢप्तः शिशुर्दिवसकृद्यथा ॥१२॥
12. sa meghasamanirghoṣastaptakāñcanasaprabhaḥ ,
babhau rathavaraḥ kḷptaḥ śiśurdivasakṛdyathā.
12. saḥ megasamanirghoṣaḥ taptakāñcanasaprabhaḥ
babhau rathavaraḥ kḷptaḥ śiśuḥ divasakṛt yathā
12. saḥ kḷptaḥ rathavaraḥ megasamanirghoṣaḥ taptakāñcanasaprabhaḥ,
śiśuḥ divasakṛt yathā babhau
12. That superb chariot, thus prepared, shone like the newly risen sun, its sound like the rumble of clouds and its splendor like molten gold.
ततः पुरुषशार्दूलः सज्जः सज्जं पुरःसरः ।
कृताह्निकाय पार्थाय न्यवेदयत तं रथम् ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ puruṣaśārdūlaḥ sajjaḥ sajjaṁ puraḥsaraḥ ,
kṛtāhnikāya pārthāya nyavedayata taṁ ratham.
13. tataḥ puruṣaśārdūlaḥ sajjaḥ sajjam puraḥsaraḥ
kṛtāhnikāya pārthāya nyavedayat tam ratham
13. tataḥ sajjaḥ puraḥsaraḥ puruṣaśārdūlaḥ,
kṛtāhnikāya pārthāya,
tam sajjam ratham nyavedayat
13. Then, the lion among men (Kṛṣṇa), himself ready and leading the way, presented that prepared chariot to Pārtha (Arjuna), who had completed his morning rites.
तं तु लोके वरः पुंसां किरीटी हेमवर्मभृत् ।
बाणबाणासनी वाहं प्रदक्षिणमवर्तत ॥१४॥
14. taṁ tu loke varaḥ puṁsāṁ kirīṭī hemavarmabhṛt ,
bāṇabāṇāsanī vāhaṁ pradakṣiṇamavartata.
14. tam tu loke varaḥ puṃsām kirīṭī hemavarmabhṛt
bāṇabāṇāsanī vāham pradakṣiṇam avartata
14. tu loke puṃsām varaḥ,
kirīṭī,
hemavarmabhṛt,
bāṇabāṇāsanī (pārthaḥ) tam vāham pradakṣiṇam avartata
14. Indeed, the best among men in the world, the crowned one (Arjuna), adorned with golden armor and holding his arrow and bow, then circumambulated that vehicle (chariot) clockwise in an auspicious manner.
ततो विद्यावयोवृद्धैः क्रियावद्भिर्जितेन्द्रियैः ।
स्तूयमानो जयाशीभिरारुरोह महारथम् ॥१५॥
15. tato vidyāvayovṛddhaiḥ kriyāvadbhirjitendriyaiḥ ,
stūyamāno jayāśībhirāruroha mahāratham.
15. tataḥ vidyāvayovṛddhaiḥ kriyāvadbhiḥ jitendriyaiḥ
stūyamānaḥ jayāśībhiḥ ārūroha mahāratham
15. tataḥ vidyāvayovṛddhaiḥ kriyāvadbhiḥ jitendriyaiḥ
jayāśībhiḥ stūyamānaḥ mahāratham ārūroha
15. Then, being praised with blessings of victory by those advanced in knowledge and age, those performing their duties, and those with controlled senses, he ascended the great chariot.
जैत्रैः सांग्रामिकैर्मन्त्रैः पूर्वमेव रथोत्तमम् ।
अभिमन्त्रितमर्चिष्मानुदयं भास्करो यथा ॥१६॥
16. jaitraiḥ sāṁgrāmikairmantraiḥ pūrvameva rathottamam ,
abhimantritamarciṣmānudayaṁ bhāskaro yathā.
16. jaitraiḥ sāṅgrāmikaiḥ mantraiḥ pūrvam eva rathottamam
abhimantritam arciṣmān udayam bhāskaraḥ yathā
16. yathā bhāskaraḥ udayam arciṣmān jaitraiḥ sāṅgrāmikaiḥ
mantraiḥ pūrvam eva abhimantritam rathottamam
16. Just as the radiant sun (bhāskara) rises, so did the radiant one (referring to the protagonist) ascend the excellent chariot, which had already been consecrated with victorious battle-mantras.
स रथे रथिनां श्रेष्ठः काञ्चने काञ्चनावृतः ।
विबभौ विमलोऽर्चिष्मान्मेराविव दिवाकरः ॥१७॥
17. sa rathe rathināṁ śreṣṭhaḥ kāñcane kāñcanāvṛtaḥ ,
vibabhau vimalo'rciṣmānmerāviva divākaraḥ.
17. saḥ rathe rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ kāñcane kāñcanāvṛtaḥ
vibabhau vimalaḥ arciṣmān merau iva divākaraḥ
17. saḥ rathinām śreṣṭhaḥ vimalaḥ arciṣmān kāñcanāvṛtaḥ
kāñcane rathe vibabhau merau iva divākaraḥ
17. He, the best of charioteers, radiant and spotless, adorned with gold on the golden chariot, shone brightly, just like the sun (divākara) on Mount Meru.
अन्वारुरोहतुः पार्थं युयुधानजनार्दनौ ।
शर्यातेर्यज्ञमायान्तं यथेन्द्रं देवमश्विनौ ॥१८॥
18. anvārurohatuḥ pārthaṁ yuyudhānajanārdanau ,
śaryāteryajñamāyāntaṁ yathendraṁ devamaśvinau.
18. anu-ārūrohatuḥ pārtham yuyudhānajanārdanau |
śaryāteḥ yajñam āyāntam yathā indram devam aśvinau
18. yuyudhānajanārdanau pārtham anu-ārūrohatuḥ yathā aśvinau
śaryāteḥ yajñam āyāntam indram devam (anu-ārūrohatuḥ)
18. Yuyudhana (Satyaki) and Janardana (Krishna) followed Arjuna, just as the two Ashvins would accompany the god Indra when he arrived at King Saryati's Vedic ritual (yajña).
अथ जग्राह गोविन्दो रश्मीन्रश्मिवतां वरः ।
मातलिर्वासवस्येव वृत्रं हन्तुं प्रयास्यतः ॥१९॥
19. atha jagrāha govindo raśmīnraśmivatāṁ varaḥ ,
mātalirvāsavasyeva vṛtraṁ hantuṁ prayāsyataḥ.
19. atha jagrāha govindaḥ raśmīn raśmivatāṃ varaḥ
mātaliḥ vāsavasya iva vṛtram hantuṃ prayāsyataḥ
19. govindaḥ raśmivatāṃ varaḥ atha raśmīn jagrāha
vāsavasya vṛtram hantuṃ prayāsyataḥ mātaliḥ iva
19. Then Govinda, the foremost among those who hold the reins, took the reins, just as Matali (Indra's charioteer) would for Vasava (Indra) when he was about to set out to kill Vritra.
स ताभ्यां सहितः पार्थो रथप्रवरमास्थितः ।
सहितो बुधशुक्राभ्यां तमो निघ्नन्यथा शशी ॥२०॥
20. sa tābhyāṁ sahitaḥ pārtho rathapravaramāsthitaḥ ,
sahito budhaśukrābhyāṁ tamo nighnanyathā śaśī.
20. saḥ tābhyām sahitaḥ pārthaḥ rathapravaram āsthitaḥ
sahitaḥ budhaśukrābhyām tamaḥ nighnan yathā śaśī
20. saḥ pārthaḥ tābhyām sahitaḥ rathapravaram āsthitaḥ
budhaśukrābhyām sahitaḥ tamaḥ nighnan śaśī yathā
20. That Partha (Arjuna), accompanied by those two (Krishna and the excellent chariot), ascended the excellent chariot. He was like the moon, accompanied by Budha (Mercury) and Shukra (Venus), dispelling the darkness.
सैन्धवस्य वधप्रेप्सुः प्रयातः शत्रुपूगहा ।
सहाम्बुपतिमित्राभ्यां यथेन्द्रस्तारकामये ॥२१॥
21. saindhavasya vadhaprepsuḥ prayātaḥ śatrupūgahā ,
sahāmbupatimitrābhyāṁ yathendrastārakāmaye.
21. saindhavasya vadhaprepsuḥ prayātaḥ śatrupūgahā
saha ambupatimitrābhyām yathā indraḥ tārakāmaye
21. śatrupūgahā saindhavasya vadhaprepsuḥ prayātaḥ
yathā indraḥ ambupatimitrābhyām saha tārakāmaye
21. Desirous of killing Saindhava (Jayadratha), the slayer of enemy hosts (Arjuna) set forth, just as Indra, accompanied by Ambupati (Varuna) and Mitra, did for the war with Taraka.
ततो वादित्रनिर्घोषैर्मङ्गल्यैश्च स्तवैः शुभैः ।
प्रयान्तमर्जुनं सूता मागधाश्चैव तुष्टुवुः ॥२२॥
22. tato vāditranirghoṣairmaṅgalyaiśca stavaiḥ śubhaiḥ ,
prayāntamarjunaṁ sūtā māgadhāścaiva tuṣṭuvuḥ.
22. tataḥ vāditranirghoṣaiḥ maṅgalyaiḥ ca stavaiḥ śubhaiḥ
prayāntam arjunam sūtāḥ māgadhāḥ ca eva tuṣṭuvuḥ
22. tataḥ sūtāḥ māgadhāḥ ca eva maṅgalyaiḥ vāditranirghoṣaiḥ
ca śubhaiḥ stavaiḥ prayāntam arjunam tuṣṭuvuḥ
22. Then, with auspicious sounds of musical instruments and propitious praises, the charioteers (or bards) and panegyrists extolled Arjuna as he was setting forth.
सजयाशीः सपुण्याहः सूतमागधनिस्वनः ।
युक्तो वादित्रघोषेण तेषां रतिकरोऽभवत् ॥२३॥
23. sajayāśīḥ sapuṇyāhaḥ sūtamāgadhanisvanaḥ ,
yukto vāditraghoṣeṇa teṣāṁ ratikaro'bhavat.
23. sajayāśīḥ sapuṇyāhaḥ sūtamāgadhanisvanaḥ
yuktaḥ vāditraghoṣeṇa teṣām ratikaraḥ abhavat
23. sajayāśīḥ sapuṇyāhaḥ sūtamāgadhanisvanaḥ
vāditraghoṣeṇa yuktaḥ teṣām ratikaraḥ abhavat
23. Accompanied by the sound of bards and panegyrists proclaiming blessings of victory and auspicious days, and joined by the clamor of musical instruments, it became a source of delight for them.
तमनुप्रयतो वायुः पुण्यगन्धवहः शुचिः ।
ववौ संहर्षयन्पार्थं द्विषतश्चापि शोषयन् ॥२४॥
24. tamanuprayato vāyuḥ puṇyagandhavahaḥ śuciḥ ,
vavau saṁharṣayanpārthaṁ dviṣataścāpi śoṣayan.
24. tam anuprayataḥ vāyuḥ puṇyagandhavahaḥ śuciḥ
vavau saṃharṣayan pārtham dviṣataḥ ca api śoṣayan
24. puṇyagandhavahaḥ śuciḥ vāyuḥ tam anuprayataḥ
pārtham saṃharṣayan ca api dviṣataḥ śoṣayan vavau
24. A pure wind, carrying sacred fragrances, blew following him (Arjuna), delighting Arjuna (Pārtha) and also drying up (or disheartening) his enemies.
प्रादुरासन्निमित्तानि विजयाय बहूनि च ।
पाण्डवानां त्वदीयानां विपरीतानि मारिष ॥२५॥
25. prādurāsannimittāni vijayāya bahūni ca ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ tvadīyānāṁ viparītāni māriṣa.
25. prādus āsan nimittāni vijayāya bahūni ca
pāṇḍavānām tvadīyānām viparītāni māriṣa
25. māriṣa bahūni nimittāni pāṇḍavānām vijayāya
ca tvadīyānām viparītāni prādus āsan
25. O respected one (Māriṣa), many omens appeared, favorable for the victory of the Pāṇḍavas, and adverse for your (people).
दृष्ट्वार्जुनो निमित्तानि विजयाय प्रदक्षिणम् ।
युयुधानं महेष्वासमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२६॥
26. dṛṣṭvārjuno nimittāni vijayāya pradakṣiṇam ,
yuyudhānaṁ maheṣvāsamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
26. dṛṣṭvā arjunaḥ nimittāni vijayāya pradakṣiṇam
yuyudhānam maheṣvāsam idam vacanam abravīt
26. arjunaḥ vijayāya pradakṣiṇam nimittāni dṛṣṭvā
maheṣvāsam yuyudhānam idam vacanam abravīt
26. Having seen the auspicious omens for victory, Arjuna spoke these words to Yuyudhāna, the great archer.
युयुधानाद्य युद्धे मे दृश्यते विजयो ध्रुवः ।
यथा हीमानि लिङ्गानि दृश्यन्ते शिनिपुंगव ॥२७॥
27. yuyudhānādya yuddhe me dṛśyate vijayo dhruvaḥ ,
yathā hīmāni liṅgāni dṛśyante śinipuṁgava.
27. yuyudhānādya yuddhe me dṛśyate vijayaḥ dhruvaḥ
yathā hi imāni liṅgāni dṛśyante śinipuṅgava
27. yuyudhānādya śinipuṅgava yathā hi imāni liṅgāni
dṛśyante me yuddhe dhruvaḥ vijayaḥ dṛśyate
27. O Yuyudhana, O chief among the Shinis, a sure victory for me is visible in this battle, just as these signs indeed appear.
सोऽहं तत्र गमिष्यामि यत्र सैन्धवको नृपः ।
यियासुर्यमलोकाय मम वीर्यं प्रतीक्षते ॥२८॥
28. so'haṁ tatra gamiṣyāmi yatra saindhavako nṛpaḥ ,
yiyāsuryamalokāya mama vīryaṁ pratīkṣate.
28. saḥ aham tatra gamiṣyāmi yatra saindhavakaḥ
nṛpaḥ yiyāsuḥ yamalokāya mama vīryam pratīkṣate
28. saḥ aham tatra gamiṣyāmi yatra nṛpaḥ saindhavakaḥ
yamalokāya yiyāsuḥ mama vīryam pratīkṣate
28. I myself will go there, where King Saindhava, wishing to go to the world of Yama, awaits my prowess.
यथा परमकं कृत्यं सैन्धवस्य वधे मम ।
तथैव सुमहत्कृत्यं धर्मराजस्य रक्षणे ॥२९॥
29. yathā paramakaṁ kṛtyaṁ saindhavasya vadhe mama ,
tathaiva sumahatkṛtyaṁ dharmarājasya rakṣaṇe.
29. yathā paramakam kṛtyam saindhavasya vadhe mama
tathā eva sumahatkṛtyam dharmarājasya rakṣaṇe
29. yathā mama saindhavasya vadhe paramakam kṛtyam,
tathā eva dharmarājasya rakṣaṇe sumahatkṛtyam
29. Just as the supreme duty for me is in the slaying of Saindhava, so too, a very great duty lies in the protection of Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira).
स त्वमद्य महाबाहो राजानं परिपालय ।
यथैव हि मया गुप्तस्त्वया गुप्तो भवेत्तथा ॥३०॥
30. sa tvamadya mahābāho rājānaṁ paripālaya ,
yathaiva hi mayā guptastvayā gupto bhavettathā.
30. sa tvam adya mahābāho rājānam paripālaya yathā
eva hi mayā guptaḥ tvayā guptaḥ bhavet tathā
30. mahābāho sa tvam adya rājānam paripālaya,
yathā eva hi mayā guptaḥ,
tathā tvayā guptaḥ bhavet
30. Therefore, O mighty-armed one, you protect the king now, so that just as he is protected by me, he may also be protected by you.
त्वयि चाहं पराश्वस्य प्रद्युम्ने वा महारथे ।
शक्नुयां सैन्धवं हन्तुमनपेक्षो नरर्षभ ॥३१॥
31. tvayi cāhaṁ parāśvasya pradyumne vā mahārathe ,
śaknuyāṁ saindhavaṁ hantumanapekṣo nararṣabha.
31. tvayi ca ahaṃ parāśvasya pradyumne vā mahārathe
śaknuyām saindhavaṃ hantum anapekṣaḥ nararṣabha
31. nararṣabha tvayi vā mahārathe pradyumne ca ahaṃ
parāśvasya anapekṣaḥ saindhavaṃ hantum śaknuyām
31. O best among men, relying on you, or on the great charioteer Pradyumna, I would be able to kill Saṃdhava (Jayadratha) without needing (your) assistance.
मय्यपेक्षा न कर्तव्या कथंचिदपि सात्वत ।
राजन्येव परा गुप्तिः कार्या सर्वात्मना त्वया ॥३२॥
32. mayyapekṣā na kartavyā kathaṁcidapi sātvata ,
rājanyeva parā guptiḥ kāryā sarvātmanā tvayā.
32. mayi apekṣā na kartavyā kathaṃcidapi sātvata
rājani eva parā guptiḥ kāryā sarvāātmanā tvayā
32. sātvata mayi kathaṃcidapi apekṣā na kartavyā
tvayā sarvāātmanā rājani eva parā guptiḥ kāryā
32. O Sātvata (Krishna), you should not place any reliance on me whatsoever. Instead, you must, by all means, ensure supreme protection for the King (Yudhiṣṭhira) alone.
न हि यत्र महाबाहुर्वासुदेवो व्यवस्थितः ।
किंचिद्व्यापद्यते तत्र यत्राहमपि च ध्रुवम् ॥३३॥
33. na hi yatra mahābāhurvāsudevo vyavasthitaḥ ,
kiṁcidvyāpadyate tatra yatrāhamapi ca dhruvam.
33. na hi yatra mahābāhuḥ vāsudevaḥ vyavasthitaḥ
kiṃcit vyāpadyate tatra yatra ahaṃ api ca dhruvam
33. hi yatra mahābāhuḥ vāsudevaḥ vyavasthitaḥ tatra
kiṃcit na vyāpadyate ca yatra ahaṃ api dhruvam
33. For where the mighty-armed Vāsudeva (Krishna) is present, nothing at all goes wrong there; and where I (Arjuna) am also present, it is certainly true.
एवमुक्तस्तु पार्थेन सात्यकिः परवीरहा ।
तथेत्युक्त्वागमत्तत्र यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥३४॥
34. evamuktastu pārthena sātyakiḥ paravīrahā ,
tathetyuktvāgamattatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
34. evam uktaḥ tu pārthena sātyakiḥ paravīrahā tathā
iti uktvā āgamat tatra yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
34. pārthena evam uktaḥ tu paravīrahā sātyakiḥ tathā
iti uktvā yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ tatra āgamat
34. Thus spoken to by Pārtha (Arjuna), Sātyaki, the slayer of hostile heroes, said 'So be it!' and went to where King Yudhiṣṭhira was.
