वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः प्रहस्य दाशार्हः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः ।
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥१॥

tataḥ prahasya dāśārhaḥ krodhaparyākulekṣaṇaḥ ,
duryodhanamidaṁ vākyamabravītkurusaṁsadi.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, Kṛṣṇa, the descendant of Daśārha, whose eyes were agitated with rage, laughed and spoke these words to Duryodhana in the assembly of the Kurus.
लप्स्यसे वीरशयनं काममेतदवाप्स्यसि ।
स्थिरो भव सहामात्यो विमर्दो भविता महान् ॥२॥
2. lapsyase vīraśayanaṁ kāmametadavāpsyasi ,
sthiro bhava sahāmātyo vimardo bhavitā mahān.
2. lapsyase vīraśayanam kāmam etat avāpsyasi
sthiraḥ bhava sahāmātyaḥ vimardaḥ bhavitā mahān
2. You will indeed attain the hero's bed (death on the battlefield); you will achieve this very desire. Be steadfast, along with your ministers, for a great struggle will certainly come to pass.
यच्चैवं मन्यसे मूढ न मे कश्चिद्व्यतिक्रमः ।
पाण्डवेष्विति तत्सर्वं निबोधत नराधिपाः ॥३॥
3. yaccaivaṁ manyase mūḍha na me kaścidvyatikramaḥ ,
pāṇḍaveṣviti tatsarvaṁ nibodhata narādhipāḥ.
3. yat ca evam manyase mūḍha na me kaścit vyatikramaḥ
pāṇḍaveṣu iti tat sarvam nibodhata narādhipāḥ
3. And that you, O foolish one, think thus: 'I have committed no offense against the Pāṇḍavas' — know all this, O kings!
श्रिया संतप्यमानेन पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ।
त्वया दुर्मन्त्रितं द्यूतं सौबलेन च भारत ॥४॥
4. śriyā saṁtapyamānena pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām ,
tvayā durmantritaṁ dyūtaṁ saubalena ca bhārata.
4. śriyā santapyamānena pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
tvayā durmantritam dyūtam saubalena ca bhārata
4. O Bhārata, the dice game was ill-conceived by you, who were tormented by the prosperity of the great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas, and also by Saubala (Śakuni).
कथं च ज्ञातयस्तात श्रेयांसः साधुसंमताः ।
तथान्याय्यमुपस्थातुं जिह्मेनाजिह्मचारिणः ॥५॥
5. kathaṁ ca jñātayastāta śreyāṁsaḥ sādhusaṁmatāḥ ,
tathānyāyyamupasthātuṁ jihmenājihmacāriṇaḥ.

tathā an-yāyyam upasthātuṃ jihmena ajihma-cāriṇaḥ
5. tāta,
jñātayaḥ ca sādhu-saṃmatāḥ śreyāṃsaḥ kathaṃ tathā ajihma-cāriṇaḥ jihmena an-yāyyam upasthātuṃ (arhati)
5. O father, how can kinsmen who are superior and respected by virtuous people similarly inflict injustice upon honest individuals through a crooked person?
अक्षद्यूतं महाप्राज्ञ सतामरतिनाशनम् ।
असतां तत्र जायन्ते भेदाश्च व्यसनानि च ॥६॥
6. akṣadyūtaṁ mahāprājña satāmaratināśanam ,
asatāṁ tatra jāyante bhedāśca vyasanāni ca.
6. akṣa-dyūtam mahā-prājña satām arati-nāśanam
asatām tatra jāyante bhedāḥ ca vyasanāni ca
6. mahā-prājña,
akṣa-dyūtam satām arati-nāśanam; tatra ca asatām bhedāḥ ca vyasanāni jāyante.
6. O greatly wise one, dice-gambling destroys the aversion (to vice) in the virtuous; but for the wicked, divisions and misfortunes arise from it.
तदिदं व्यसनं घोरं त्वया द्यूतमुखं कृतम् ।
असमीक्ष्य सदाचारैः सार्धं पापानुबन्धनैः ॥७॥
7. tadidaṁ vyasanaṁ ghoraṁ tvayā dyūtamukhaṁ kṛtam ,
asamīkṣya sadācāraiḥ sārdhaṁ pāpānubandhanaiḥ.
7. tat idam vyasanam ghoram tvayā dyūta-mukham kṛtam
asamīkṣya sadā-cāraiḥ sārdham pāpa-anubandhanaiḥ
7. tvayā tat idam ghoram dyūta-mukham vyasanam asamīkṣya (sadā-cāraiḥ) pāpa-anubandhanaiḥ sārdham kṛtam.
7. This dreadful calamity, with gambling at its forefront, has been brought about by you thoughtlessly, without consulting virtuous people, and by associating with those bound by sinful actions.
कश्चान्यो ज्ञातिभार्यां वै विप्रकर्तुं तथार्हति ।
आनीय च सभां वक्तुं यथोक्ता द्रौपदी त्वया ॥८॥
8. kaścānyo jñātibhāryāṁ vai viprakartuṁ tathārhati ,
ānīya ca sabhāṁ vaktuṁ yathoktā draupadī tvayā.
8. kaḥ ca anyaḥ jñāti-bhāryām vai vi-pra-kartum tathā
arhati ānīya ca sabhām vaktum yathā-uktā draupadī tvayā
8. ca kaḥ anyaḥ vai tathā jñāti-bhāryām vi-pra-kartum arhati? ca sabhām ānīya draupadī tvayā yathā-uktā vaktum (arhati?).
8. And who else would dare to insult the wife of a kinsman in such a way? Who would bring Draupadi into the assembly and address her as she was spoken to (by those under your authority)?
कुलीना शीलसंपन्ना प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी ।
महिषी पाण्डुपुत्राणां तथा विनिकृता त्वया ॥९॥
9. kulīnā śīlasaṁpannā prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasī ,
mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ tathā vinikṛtā tvayā.
9. kulīnā śīlasampannā prāṇebhyaḥ api garīyasī
mahiṣī pāṇḍuputrāṇām tathā vinikṛtā tvayā
9. tvayā kulīnā śīlasampannā prāṇebhyaḥ api
garīyasī pāṇḍuputrāṇām mahiṣī tathā vinikṛtā
9. The queen of the sons of Pāṇḍu, noble-born, endowed with excellent character, and more esteemed even than their very lives, was thus insulted by you.
जानन्ति कुरवः सर्वे यथोक्ताः कुरुसंसदि ।
दुःशासनेन कौन्तेयाः प्रव्रजन्तः परंतपाः ॥१०॥
10. jānanti kuravaḥ sarve yathoktāḥ kurusaṁsadi ,
duḥśāsanena kaunteyāḥ pravrajantaḥ paraṁtapāḥ.
10. jānanti kuravaḥ sarve yathā uktāḥ kurusaṃsadi
duḥśāsanena kaunteyāḥ pravrajantaḥ paraṃtapāḥ
10. sarve kuravaḥ jānanti yathā kaunteyāḥ paraṃtapāḥ
pravrajantaḥ duḥśāsanena kurusaṃsadi uktāḥ
10. All the Kurus know how the sons of Kuntī (Kaunteyāḥ), who are tormentors of their enemies, were spoken to by Duḥśāsana in the assembly of the Kurus when they were departing for exile.
सम्यग्वृत्तेष्वलुब्धेषु सततं धर्मचारिषु ।
स्वेषु बन्धुषु कः साधुश्चरेदेवमसांप्रतम् ॥११॥
11. samyagvṛtteṣvalubdheṣu satataṁ dharmacāriṣu ,
sveṣu bandhuṣu kaḥ sādhuścaredevamasāṁpratam.
11. samyakvṛtteṣu alubdheṣu satatam dharmacāriṣu
sveṣu bandhuṣu kaḥ sādhuḥ caret evam asāṃpratam
11. kaḥ sādhuḥ sveṣu samyakvṛtteṣu alubdheṣu satatam
dharmacāriṣu bandhuṣu evam asāṃpratam caret
11. What virtuous person would behave so improperly towards his own relatives who are of good conduct, free from greed, and constantly uphold their natural law (dharma)?
नृशंसानामनार्याणां परुषाणां च भाषणम् ।
कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च त्वया च बहुशः कृतम् ॥१२॥
12. nṛśaṁsānāmanāryāṇāṁ paruṣāṇāṁ ca bhāṣaṇam ,
karṇaduḥśāsanābhyāṁ ca tvayā ca bahuśaḥ kṛtam.
12. nṛśaṃsānām anāryāṇām paruṣāṇām ca bhāṣaṇam
karṇaduḥśāsanābhyām ca tvayā ca bahuśaḥ kṛtam
12. karṇaduḥśāsanābhyām ca tvayā ca nṛśaṃsānām
anāryāṇām ca paruṣāṇām bhāṣaṇam bahuśaḥ kṛtam
12. Cruel, ignoble, and harsh speech was uttered repeatedly by Karṇa, Duḥśāsana, and you.
सह मात्रा प्रदग्धुं तान्बालकान्वारणावते ।
आस्थितः परमं यत्नं न समृद्धं च तत्तव ॥१३॥
13. saha mātrā pradagdhuṁ tānbālakānvāraṇāvate ,
āsthitaḥ paramaṁ yatnaṁ na samṛddhaṁ ca tattava.
13. saha mātrā pradagdhum tān bālakān vāraṇāvate
āsthitaḥ paramam yatnam na samṛddham ca tat tava
13. tvam vāraṇāvate mātrā saha tān bālakān pradagdhum paramam yatnam āsthitaḥ,
ca tat tava na samṛddham.
13. You undertook the greatest effort to burn those boys along with their mother in Vāraṇāvata, but that (endeavor) of yours did not succeed.
ऊषुश्च सुचिरं कालं प्रच्छन्नाः पाण्डवास्तदा ।
मात्रा सहैकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने ॥१४॥
14. ūṣuśca suciraṁ kālaṁ pracchannāḥ pāṇḍavāstadā ,
mātrā sahaikacakrāyāṁ brāhmaṇasya niveśane.
14. ūṣuḥ ca suciram kālam pracchannāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tadā
mātrā saha ekacakrāyām brāhmaṇasya niveśane
14. ca tadā mātrā saha pracchannāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ ekacakrāyām brāhmaṇasya niveśane suciram kālam ūṣuḥ.
14. And then, the Pāṇḍavas, concealed along with their mother, resided for a very long time in the dwelling of a brahmin in Ekacakrā.
विषेण सर्पबन्धैश्च यतिताः पाण्डवास्त्वया ।
सर्वोपायैर्विनाशाय न समृद्धं च तत्तव ॥१५॥
15. viṣeṇa sarpabandhaiśca yatitāḥ pāṇḍavāstvayā ,
sarvopāyairvināśāya na samṛddhaṁ ca tattava.
15. viṣeṇa sarpabandhaiḥ ca yatitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ tvayā
sarvopāyaiḥ vināśāya na samṛddham ca tat tava
15. tvayā viṣeṇa ca sarpabandhaiḥ sarvopāyaiḥ pāṇḍavāḥ vināśāya yatitāḥ,
ca tat tava na samṛddham.
15. You assailed the Pāṇḍavas with poison and snake-bindings, employing all means for their destruction, yet that (endeavor) of yours did not succeed.
एवंबुद्धिः पाण्डवेषु मिथ्यावृत्तिः सदा भवान् ।
कथं ते नापराधोऽस्ति पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु ॥१६॥
16. evaṁbuddhiḥ pāṇḍaveṣu mithyāvṛttiḥ sadā bhavān ,
kathaṁ te nāparādho'sti pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu.
16. evaṃbuddhiḥ pāṇḍaveṣu mithyāvṛttiḥ sadā bhavān
katham te na aparādhaḥ asti pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu
16. bhavān sadā pāṇḍaveṣu evaṃbuddhiḥ mithyāvṛttiḥ,
katham te mahātmasu pāṇḍaveṣu aparādhaḥ na asti?
16. You have always had such malicious intentions and false conduct towards the Pāṇḍavas. How can it be that you have committed no offense against those great-souled (mahātman) Pāṇḍavas?
कृत्वा बहून्यकार्याणि पाण्डवेषु नृशंसवत् ।
मिथ्यावृत्तिरनार्यः सन्नद्य विप्रतिपद्यसे ॥१७॥
17. kṛtvā bahūnyakāryāṇi pāṇḍaveṣu nṛśaṁsavat ,
mithyāvṛttiranāryaḥ sannadya vipratipadyase.
17. kṛtvā bahūni akāryāṇi pāṇḍaveṣu nṛśaṃsavat
mithyāvṛttiḥ anāryaḥ san adya vipratipadyase
17. pāṇḍaveṣu nṛśaṃsavat bahūni akāryāṇi kṛtvā,
mithyāvṛttiḥ anāryaḥ san,
adya vipratipadyase.
17. After having cruelly committed many wrong deeds against the Pāṇḍavas, and being both deceitful in conduct and ignoble (anāryaḥ), you continue to act contrary (to what is right) even today.
मातापितृभ्यां भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च ।
शाम्येति मुहुरुक्तोऽसि न च शाम्यसि पार्थिव ॥१८॥
18. mātāpitṛbhyāṁ bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca ,
śāmyeti muhurukto'si na ca śāmyasi pārthiva.
18. mātāpitṛbhyām bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca
śāmya iti muhuḥ uktaḥ asi na ca śāmyasi pārthiva
18. pārthiva,
mātāpitṛbhyām bhīṣmeṇa droṇena vidureṇa ca "śāmya!" iti muhuḥ uktaḥ asi,
na ca śāmyasi.
18. By your parents, by Bhīṣma, by Droṇa, and by Vidura, you have been repeatedly told 'Be calm!', yet you are not pacified, O King.
शमे हि सुमहानर्थस्तव पार्थस्य चोभयोः ।
न च रोचयसे राजन्किमन्यद्बुद्धिलाघवात् ॥१९॥
19. śame hi sumahānarthastava pārthasya cobhayoḥ ,
na ca rocayase rājankimanyadbuddhilāghavāt.
19. śame hi sumahān arthaḥ tava pārthasya ca ubhayoḥ
na ca rocayase rājan kim anyat buddhilāghavāt
19. rājan,
śame hi tava pārthasya ca ubhayoḥ sumahān arthaḥ.
na ca (tvam) rocayase.
buddhilāghavāt anyat kim?
19. Indeed, a very great advantage lies in peace (śama) for both you and Pārtha. But you do not favor it, O King. What else could this be but a lack of intelligence?
न शर्म प्राप्स्यसे राजन्नुत्क्रम्य सुहृदां वचः ।
अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च क्रियते पार्थिव त्वया ॥२०॥
20. na śarma prāpsyase rājannutkramya suhṛdāṁ vacaḥ ,
adharmyamayaśasyaṁ ca kriyate pārthiva tvayā.
20. na śarma prāpsyase rājan utkramya suhṛdām vacaḥ
adharmyam ayaśasyam ca kriyate pārthiva tvayā
20. rājan,
pārthiva,
suhṛdām vacaḥ utkramya,
(tvam) śarma na prāpsyase.
adharmyam ayaśasyam ca (karma) tvayā kriyate.
20. O King, you will not find happiness (śarma) by transgressing the words of your well-wishers. And, O King, this unrighteous (adharmya) and inglorious act is being done by you.
एवं ब्रुवति दाशार्हे दुर्योधनममर्षणम् ।
दुःशासन इदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥२१॥
21. evaṁ bruvati dāśārhe duryodhanamamarṣaṇam ,
duḥśāsana idaṁ vākyamabravītkurusaṁsadi.
21. evam bruvati dāśārhe duryodhanam amarṣaṇam
duḥśāsana idam vākyam abravīt kurusaṃsadi
21. duḥśāsanaḥ kurusaṃsadi dāśārhe evam duryodhanam
amarṣaṇam bruvati idam vākyam abravīt
21. While Kṛṣṇa (Dāśārha) was speaking thus to the enraged Duryodhana, Duḥśāsana uttered this statement in the assembly of the Kurus.
न चेत्संधास्यसे राजन्स्वेन कामेन पाण्डवैः ।
बद्ध्वा किल त्वां दास्यन्ति कुन्तीपुत्राय कौरवाः ॥२२॥
22. na cetsaṁdhāsyase rājansvena kāmena pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
baddhvā kila tvāṁ dāsyanti kuntīputrāya kauravāḥ.
22. na cet saṃdhāsyase rājan svena kāmena pāṇḍavaiḥ
baddhvā kila tvām dāsyanti kuntīputrāya kauravāḥ
22. rājan cet tvam svena kāmena pāṇḍavaiḥ na saṃdhāsyase
kauravāḥ kila tvām baddhvā kuntīputrāya dāsyanti
22. O King, if you will not make peace with the Pāṇḍavas of your own accord, then the Kurus will surely bind you and hand you over to Kuntī’s son (Yudhiṣṭhira).
वैकर्तनं त्वां च मां च त्रीनेतान्मनुजर्षभ ।
पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रदास्यन्ति भीष्मो द्रोणः पिता च ते ॥२३॥
23. vaikartanaṁ tvāṁ ca māṁ ca trīnetānmanujarṣabha ,
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāsyanti bhīṣmo droṇaḥ pitā ca te.
23. vaikartanam tvām ca mām ca trīn etān manujarṣabha
pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāsyanti bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ pitā ca te
23. manujarṣabha bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ te pitā ca vaikartanam
tvām ca mām ca etān trīn pāṇḍavebhyaḥ pradāsyanti
23. O best among men (Duryodhana), Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and your father (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) will hand over these three—Karṇa (Vaikartana), you, and me—to the Pāṇḍavas.
भ्रातुरेतद्वचः श्रुत्वा धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः ।
क्रुद्धः प्रातिष्ठतोत्थाय महानाग इव श्वसन् ॥२४॥
24. bhrāturetadvacaḥ śrutvā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanaḥ ,
kruddhaḥ prātiṣṭhatotthāya mahānāga iva śvasan.
24. bhrātuḥ etat vacaḥ śrutvā dhārtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanaḥ
kruddhaḥ prātiṣṭhata utthāya mahānāgaḥ iva śvasan
24. dhārtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanaḥ bhrātuḥ etat vacaḥ śrutvā
kruddhaḥ utthāya mahānāgaḥ iva śvasan prātiṣṭhata
24. Having heard these words from his brother, Suyodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra (Dhārtarāṣṭra), became enraged. He rose up and set out, hissing like a great serpent.
विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् ।
कृपं च सोमदत्तं च भीष्मं द्रोणं जनार्दनम् ॥२५॥
25. viduraṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ ca mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam ,
kṛpaṁ ca somadattaṁ ca bhīṣmaṁ droṇaṁ janārdanam.
25. viduram dhṛtarāṣṭram ca mahārājam ca bāhlikam
kṛpam ca somadattam ca bhīṣmam droṇam janārdanam
25. viduram dhṛtarāṣṭram ca mahārājam ca bāhlikam
kṛpam ca somadattam ca bhīṣmam droṇam janārdanam
25. Vidura, Dhritarashtra, the great king Bahlika, Kripa, Somadatta, Bhishma, Drona, and Janardana (Krishna).
सर्वानेताननादृत्य दुर्मतिर्निरपत्रपः ।
अशिष्टवदमर्यादो मानी मान्यावमानिता ॥२६॥
26. sarvānetānanādṛtya durmatirnirapatrapaḥ ,
aśiṣṭavadamaryādo mānī mānyāvamānitā.
26. sarvān etān anādṛtya durmatiḥ nirapatrapaḥ
aśiṣṭavat amaryādaḥ mānī mānyāvamānitā
26. durmatiḥ nirapatrapaḥ aśiṣṭavat amaryādaḥ
mānī mānyāvamānitā sarvān etān anādṛtya
26. Disregarding all these [esteemed persons], the evil-minded and shameless [Duryodhana], unrestrained and ill-behaved, was proud and a profound insult to those worthy of reverence.
तं प्रस्थितमभिप्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरो मनुजर्षभम् ।
अनुजग्मुः सहामात्या राजानश्चापि सर्वशः ॥२७॥
27. taṁ prasthitamabhiprekṣya bhrātaro manujarṣabham ,
anujagmuḥ sahāmātyā rājānaścāpi sarvaśaḥ.
27. tam prasthitam abhiprekṣya bhrātaraḥ manujarṣabham
anujagmuḥ saha amātyāḥ rājānaḥ ca api sarvaśaḥ
27. bhrātaraḥ ca saha amātyāḥ ca rājānaḥ api sarvaśaḥ
tam manujarṣabham prasthitam abhiprekṣya anujagmuḥ
27. Seeing him, the best of men (Duryodhana), depart, his brothers followed, and all the kings, along with their ministers, also followed.
सभायामुत्थितं क्रुद्धं प्रस्थितं भ्रातृभिः सह ।
दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥२८॥
28. sabhāyāmutthitaṁ kruddhaṁ prasthitaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha ,
duryodhanamabhiprekṣya bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavo'bravīt.
28. sabhāyām utthitam kruddham prasthitam bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
duryodhanam abhiprekṣya bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ abravīt
28. bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ sabhāyām utthitam kruddham bhrātṛbhiḥ
saha prasthitam duryodhanam abhiprekṣya abravīt
28. Seeing Duryodhana, who had risen in the assembly, angry and departing with his brothers, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, spoke.
धर्मार्थावभिसंत्यज्य संरम्भं योऽनुमन्यते ।
हसन्ति व्यसने तस्य दुर्हृदो नचिरादिव ॥२९॥
29. dharmārthāvabhisaṁtyajya saṁrambhaṁ yo'numanyate ,
hasanti vyasane tasya durhṛdo nacirādiva.
29. dharmārthau abhisaṃtyajya saṃrambham yaḥ anumanyate
hasanti vyasane tasya durhṛdaḥ na cirāt iva
29. yaḥ dharmārthau abhisaṃtyajya saṃrambham anumanyate,
tasya vyasane durhṛdaḥ na cirāt iva hasanti.
29. Whoever completely disregards both righteous conduct (dharma) and material prosperity (artha), and instead encourages reckless actions, his enemies will soon laugh at his misfortune.
दुरात्मा राजपुत्रोऽयं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित् ।
मिथ्याभिमानी राज्यस्य क्रोधलोभवशानुगः ॥३०॥
30. durātmā rājaputro'yaṁ dhārtarāṣṭro'nupāyavit ,
mithyābhimānī rājyasya krodhalobhavaśānugaḥ.
30. durātmā rājaputraḥ ayam dhārtarāṣṭraḥ anupāyavit
mithyābhimānī rājyasya krodhalobhavaśānugaḥ
30. ayam rājaputraḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ durātmā anupāyavit mithyābhimānī rājyasya krodhalobhavaśānugaḥ (asti).
30. This prince, Duryodhana (Dhārtarāṣṭra), is evil-minded and ignorant of proper strategies. He is falsely proud regarding the kingdom and subservient to anger and greed.
कालपक्वमिदं मन्ये सर्वक्षत्रं जनार्दन ।
सर्वे ह्यनुसृता मोहात्पार्थिवाः सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥३१॥
31. kālapakvamidaṁ manye sarvakṣatraṁ janārdana ,
sarve hyanusṛtā mohātpārthivāḥ saha mantribhiḥ.
31. kālapakvam idam manye sarvakṣatram janārdana
sarve hi anusṛtāḥ mohāt pārthivāḥ saha mantribhiḥ
31. janārdana,
aham idam sarvakṣatram kālapakvam manye.
hi sarve pārthivāḥ saha mantribhiḥ mohāt anusṛtāḥ.
31. O Janārdana, I believe this entire warrior class is ripe for its fated end. Indeed, all the kings, accompanied by their ministers, have become deluded by infatuation.
भीष्मस्याथ वचः श्रुत्वा दाशार्हः पुष्करेक्षणः ।
भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वानभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान् ॥३२॥
32. bhīṣmasyātha vacaḥ śrutvā dāśārhaḥ puṣkarekṣaṇaḥ ,
bhīṣmadroṇamukhānsarvānabhyabhāṣata vīryavān.

32. Then, the powerful lotus-eyed descendant of Daśārha (Krishna), having heard Bhīṣma's words, addressed all of them, headed by Bhīṣma and Droṇa.
सर्वेषां कुरुवृद्धानां महानयमतिक्रमः ।
प्रसह्य मन्दमैश्वर्ये न नियच्छत यन्नृपम् ॥३३॥
33. sarveṣāṁ kuruvṛddhānāṁ mahānayamatikramaḥ ,
prasahya mandamaiśvarye na niyacchata yannṛpam.
33. sarveṣām kuruvṛddhānām mahān ayam atikramaḥ
prasahya mandam aiśvarye na niyacchata yat nṛpam
33. ayam mahān atikramaḥ sarveṣām kuruvṛddhānām yat

33. This is a great transgression by all the elders of the Kuru dynasty: that you do not forcibly restrain this foolish king in his exercise of sovereignty.
तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये प्राप्तकालमरिंदमाः ।
क्रियमाणे भवेच्छ्रेयस्तत्सर्वं शृणुतानघाः ॥३४॥
34. tatra kāryamahaṁ manye prāptakālamariṁdamāḥ ,
kriyamāṇe bhavecchreyastatsarvaṁ śṛṇutānaghāḥ.
34. tatra kāryam aham manye prāptakālam ariṃdamāḥ
kriyamāṇe bhavet śreyaḥ tat sarvam śṛṇuta anaghāḥ
34. ariṃdamāḥ aham tatra prāptakālam kāryam manye
kriyamāṇe śreyaḥ bhavet anaghāḥ tat sarvam śṛṇuta
34. O subduers of foes, I consider that there is a timely action to be taken there. When it is performed, great good will come. O sinless ones, listen to all of it.
प्रत्यक्षमेतद्भवतां यद्वक्ष्यामि हितं वचः ।
भवतामानुकूल्येन यदि रोचेत भारताः ॥३५॥
35. pratyakṣametadbhavatāṁ yadvakṣyāmi hitaṁ vacaḥ ,
bhavatāmānukūlyena yadi roceta bhāratāḥ.
35. pratyakṣam etat bhavatām yat vakṣyāmi hitam
vacaḥ bhavatām ānukūlyena yadi roceta bhāratāḥ
35. bhāratāḥ yat hitam vacaḥ vakṣyāmi etat bhavatām

35. O Bhāratas, what beneficial word I am about to speak, this is evident to you all. May it please you if it is agreeable to your disposition.
भोजराजस्य वृद्धस्य दुराचारो ह्यनात्मवान् ।
जीवतः पितुरैश्वर्यं हृत्वा मन्युवशं गतः ॥३६॥
36. bhojarājasya vṛddhasya durācāro hyanātmavān ,
jīvataḥ pituraiśvaryaṁ hṛtvā manyuvaśaṁ gataḥ.

jīvataḥ pituḥ aiśvaryam hṛtvā manyuvaśam gataḥ

36. Indeed, the ill-behaved and uncontrolled (anātman) son of the aged King Bhoja, having seized sovereignty from his living father, has succumbed to the power of wrath.
उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः परित्यक्तः स बान्धवैः ।
ज्ञातीनां हितकामेन मया शस्तो महामृधे ॥३७॥
37. ugrasenasutaḥ kaṁsaḥ parityaktaḥ sa bāndhavaiḥ ,
jñātīnāṁ hitakāmena mayā śasto mahāmṛdhe.

37. Kaṃsa, the son of Ugrasena, had been abandoned by his relatives. Desiring the welfare of my kinsmen, I slew him in a great battle.
आहुकः पुनरस्माभिर्ज्ञातिभिश्चापि सत्कृतः ।
उग्रसेनः कृतो राजा भोजराजन्यवर्धनः ॥३८॥
38. āhukaḥ punarasmābhirjñātibhiścāpi satkṛtaḥ ,
ugrasenaḥ kṛto rājā bhojarājanyavardhanaḥ.
38. āhukaḥ punaḥ asmābhiḥ jñātibhiḥ ca api satkṛtaḥ
| ugrasenāḥ kṛtaḥ rājā bhojarājanyavardhanaḥ
38. punaḥ asmābhiḥ ca api jñātibhiḥ āhukaḥ satkṛtaḥ
ugrasenāḥ rājā kṛtaḥ bhojarājanyavardhanaḥ
38. But Āhuka was honored by us and by our kinsmen. Ugrasena was made king, the promoter of the Bhōja lineage.
कंसमेकं परित्यज्य कुलार्थे सर्वयादवाः ।
संभूय सुखमेधन्ते भारतान्धकवृष्णयः ॥३९॥
39. kaṁsamekaṁ parityajya kulārthe sarvayādavāḥ ,
saṁbhūya sukhamedhante bhāratāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ.
39. kaṃsam ekam parityajya kulārthe sarvayādavāḥ |
saṃbhūya sukham edhante bhāratāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ
39. sarvayādavāḥ bhāratāndhakavṛṣṇayaḥ ekam kaṃsam

39. Having abandoned Kaṃsa alone for the sake of the family (kula), all the Yādavas, including the Bhāratas, Andhakas, and Vṛṣṇis, now prosper together in happiness.
अपि चाप्यवदद्राजन्परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः ।
व्यूढे देवासुरे युद्धेऽभ्युद्यतेष्वायुधेषु च ॥४०॥
40. api cāpyavadadrājanparameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ ,
vyūḍhe devāsure yuddhe'bhyudyateṣvāyudheṣu ca.
40. api ca api avadat rājan parameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ |
vyūḍhe devāsure yuddhe abhyudyateṣu āyudheṣu ca
40. rājan! api ca api parameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ avadat
vyūḍhe devāsure yuddhe ca āyudheṣu abhyudyateṣu
40. Moreover, O King, the supreme creator (prajāpati), Brahmā, also spoke when the battle between the gods and asuras was arrayed and their weapons were raised.
द्वैधीभूतेषु लोकेषु विनश्यत्सु च भारत ।
अब्रवीत्सृष्टिमान्देवो भगवाँल्लोकभावनः ॥४१॥
41. dvaidhībhūteṣu lokeṣu vinaśyatsu ca bhārata ,
abravītsṛṣṭimāndevo bhagavāँllokabhāvanaḥ.

abravīt sṛṣṭimān devaḥ bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ
41. bhārata dvaidhībhūteṣu vinaśyatsu ca lokeṣu

41. When the worlds were becoming divided into two factions and were perishing, O Bhārata, the divine creator, Bhagavān, the sustainer of the worlds, spoke.
पराभविष्यन्त्यसुरा दैतेया दानवैः सह ।
आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा भविष्यन्ति दिवौकसः ॥४२॥
42. parābhaviṣyantyasurā daiteyā dānavaiḥ saha ,
ādityā vasavo rudrā bhaviṣyanti divaukasaḥ.
42. parābhaviṣyanti asurā daiteyā dānavaiḥ saha
ādityā vasavaḥ rudrāḥ bhaviṣyanti divaukasaḥ
42. asurā daiteyā dānavaiḥ saha parābhaviṣyanti

42. The Asuras, the Daityas, along with the Dānavas, will be vanquished. But the Ādityas, Vasus, and Rudras will remain as the dwellers of heaven (divaukasaḥ).
देवासुरमनुष्याश्च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसाः ।
अस्मिन्युद्धे सुसंयत्ता हनिष्यन्ति परस्परम् ॥४३॥
43. devāsuramanuṣyāśca gandharvoragarākṣasāḥ ,
asminyuddhe susaṁyattā haniṣyanti parasparam.

asmin yuddhe susaṃyattāḥ haniṣyanti parasparam
43. devasuramanuṣyāḥ ca gandharvoragarākṣasāḥ

43. Gods, Asuras, humans, Gandharvas, Uragas, and Rākṣasas, all thoroughly prepared for this battle, will kill one another.
इति मत्वाब्रवीद्धर्मं परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः ।
वरुणाय प्रयच्छैतान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान् ॥४४॥
44. iti matvābravīddharmaṁ parameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ ,
varuṇāya prayacchaitānbaddhvā daiteyadānavān.
44. iti matvā abravīt dharmam parameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ
varuṇāya prayaccha etān baddhvā daiteyadānavān

44. Having considered this, Prajāpati Parameṣṭhī, the supreme creator, spoke regarding the natural law (dharma): 'Bind these Daityas and Dānavas and hand them over to Varuṇa.'
एवमुक्तस्ततो धर्मो नियोगात्परमेष्ठिनः ।
वरुणाय ददौ सर्वान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान् ॥४५॥
45. evamuktastato dharmo niyogātparameṣṭhinaḥ ,
varuṇāya dadau sarvānbaddhvā daiteyadānavān.
45. evam uktaḥ tataḥ dharmaḥ niyogāt parameṣṭhinaḥ
varuṇāya dadau sarvān baddhvā daiteyadānavān

45. Thus addressed, Dharma (dharma), following the command of the Supreme Being, bound all the Daityas and Danavas and handed them over to Varuna.
तान्बद्ध्वा धर्मपाशैश्च स्वैश्च पाशैर्जलेश्वरः ।
वरुणः सागरे यत्तो नित्यं रक्षति दानवान् ॥४६॥
46. tānbaddhvā dharmapāśaiśca svaiśca pāśairjaleśvaraḥ ,
varuṇaḥ sāgare yatto nityaṁ rakṣati dānavān.
46. tān baddhvā dharmapāśaiḥ ca svaiḥ ca pāśaiḥ jaleśvaraḥ
varuṇaḥ sāgare yattaḥ nityam rakṣati dānavān
46. jaleśvaraḥ varuṇaḥ tān dharmapāśaiḥ ca svaiḥ pāśaiḥ
ca baddhvā yattaḥ nityam sāgare dānavān rakṣati
46. Having bound them with the nooses of Dharma (dharma) and with his own ropes, Varuna, the lord of waters, diligently protects the Danavas forever in the ocean.
तथा दुर्योधनं कर्णं शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् ।
बद्ध्वा दुःशासनं चापि पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रयच्छत ॥४७॥
47. tathā duryodhanaṁ karṇaṁ śakuniṁ cāpi saubalam ,
baddhvā duḥśāsanaṁ cāpi pāṇḍavebhyaḥ prayacchata.
47. tathā duryodhanaṃ karṇaṃ śakuniṃ ca api saubalam
baddhvā duḥśāsanaṃ ca api pāṇḍavebhyaḥ prayacchata

47. Likewise, having bound Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, the son of Subala, and Dushasana, hand them over to the Pandavas.
त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥४८॥
48. tyajetkulārthe puruṣaṁ grāmasyārthe kulaṁ tyajet ,
grāmaṁ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṁ tyajet.

grāmam janapadasya arthe ātma-arthe pṛthivīm tyajet

48. One should sacrifice an individual for the sake of the family; one should abandon the family for the sake of the village; one should forsake the village for the sake of the country; and for the sake of oneself (ātman), one should give up the entire earth.
राजन्दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा ततः संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ।
त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥४९॥
49. rājanduryodhanaṁ baddhvā tataḥ saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
tvatkṛte na vinaśyeyuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha.
49. rājan duryodhanaṃ baddhvā tataḥ saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ
tvatkṛte na vinaśyeyuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kṣatriyarṣabha
49. rājan kṣatriyarṣabha duryodhanaṃ baddhvā tataḥ
pāṇḍavaiḥ saṃśāmya tvatkṛte kṣatriyāḥ na vinaśyeyuḥ
49. O King, O best among warriors (kṣatriyarṣabha), by arresting Duryodhana and then reconciling with the Pāṇḍavas, the warriors (kṣatriyāḥ) should not perish because of you.
