वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो राजा पाण्डुसुतो नारदं प्रत्यभाषत ।
भगवञ्श्रोतुमिच्छामि सुवर्णष्ठीविसंभवम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato rājā pāṇḍusuto nāradaṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
bhagavañśrotumicchāmi suvarṇaṣṭhīvisaṁbhavam.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then the king, son of Pāṇḍu, addressed Narada, 'O venerable one, I wish to hear the story of the origin of the gold-spitter.'
एवमुक्तः स च मुनिर्धर्मराजेन नारदः ।
आचचक्षे यथा वृत्तं सुवर्णष्ठीविनं प्रति ॥२॥
2. evamuktaḥ sa ca munirdharmarājena nāradaḥ ,
ācacakṣe yathā vṛttaṁ suvarṇaṣṭhīvinaṁ prati.
2. evam uktaḥ saḥ ca muniḥ dharmarājena nāradaḥ
ācacakṣe yathā vṛttam suvarṇaṣṭhīvinam prati
2. dharmarājena evam uktaḥ saḥ muniḥ nāradaḥ ca

2. And thus addressed by the King of righteousness (dharma), that sage Narada narrated the story as it truly happened, regarding the gold-spitter.
एवमेतन्महाराज यथायं केशवोऽब्रवीत् ।
कार्यस्यास्य तु यच्छेषं तत्ते वक्ष्यामि पृच्छतः ॥३॥
3. evametanmahārāja yathāyaṁ keśavo'bravīt ,
kāryasyāsya tu yaccheṣaṁ tatte vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ.
3. evam etat mahārāja yathā ayam keśavaḥ abravīt
kāryasya asya tu yat śeṣam tat te vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ
3. mahārāja ayam keśavaḥ yathā abravīt etat evam tu
asya kāryasya yat śeṣam tat te pṛcchataḥ vakṣyāmi
3. O great king, this is indeed as Keshava (Kṛṣṇa) has said. As for the remainder of this matter, I will tell that to you who are inquiring.
अहं च पर्वतश्चैव स्वस्रीयो मे महामुनिः ।
वस्तुकामावभिगतौ सृञ्जयं जयतां वरम् ॥४॥
4. ahaṁ ca parvataścaiva svasrīyo me mahāmuniḥ ,
vastukāmāvabhigatau sṛñjayaṁ jayatāṁ varam.
4. ahaṃ ca parvataḥ ca eva svasrīyaḥ me mahāmuniḥ
vastu-kāmau abhigatau sṛñjayam jayatām varam
4. ahaṃ ca me svasrīyaḥ mahāmuniḥ parvataḥ ca eva
vastu-kāmau jayatām varam sṛñjayam abhigatau
4. My nephew, the great sage Parvata, and I have indeed approached Sañjaya, the best among victors, desiring to reside with him.
तत्र संपूजितौ तेन विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
सर्वकामैः सुविहितौ निवसावोऽस्य वेश्मनि ॥५॥
5. tatra saṁpūjitau tena vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
sarvakāmaiḥ suvihitau nivasāvo'sya veśmani.
5. tatra sampūjitau tena vidhi-dṛṣṭena karmaṇā
sarva-kāmaiḥ suvihitau nivasāvaḥ asya veśmani
5. tatra tena vidhi-dṛṣṭena karmaṇā sampūjitau
sarva-kāmaiḥ suvihitau asya veśmani nivasāvaḥ
5. There, honored by him with actions (karma) in accordance with the prescribed rules, and well-provided with all our desires, we both reside in his house.
व्यतिक्रान्तासु वर्षासु समये गमनस्य च ।
पर्वतो मामुवाचेदं काले वचनमर्थवत् ॥६॥
6. vyatikrāntāsu varṣāsu samaye gamanasya ca ,
parvato māmuvācedaṁ kāle vacanamarthavat.
6. vyatikrāntāsu varṣāsu samaye gamanasya ca
parvataḥ mām uvāca idam kāle vacanam arthavat
6. varṣāsu vyatikrāntāsu ca gamanasya samaye
parvataḥ kāle idam arthavat vacanam mām uvāca
6. After the years had passed, and at the appropriate time for our departure, Parvata spoke these meaningful words to me.
आवामस्य नरेन्द्रस्य गृहे परमपूजितौ ।
उषितौ समये ब्रह्मंश्चिन्त्यतामत्र सांप्रतम् ॥७॥
7. āvāmasya narendrasya gṛhe paramapūjitau ,
uṣitau samaye brahmaṁścintyatāmatra sāṁpratam.
7. āvām asya narendrasya gṛhe parama-pūjitau
uṣitau samaye brahman cintyatām atra sāmpratam
7. brahman āvām asya narendrasya gṛhe parama-pūjitau
samaye uṣitau atra sāmpratam cintyatām
7. O Brahmin, we two have resided for a long time, highly honored, in the house of this king. Now, let us consider what to do here.
ततोऽहमब्रुवं राजन्पर्वतं शुभदर्शनम् ।
सर्वमेतत्त्वयि विभो भागिनेयोपपद्यते ॥८॥
8. tato'hamabruvaṁ rājanparvataṁ śubhadarśanam ,
sarvametattvayi vibho bhāgineyopapadyate.
8. tataḥ aham abruvam rājan parvatam śubhadarśanam
sarvam etat tvayi vibho bhāgineya upapadyate
8. tataḥ rājan śubhadarśanam parvatam aham abruvam
he vibho sarvam etat tvayi bhāgineya upapadyate
8. Then I spoke to Parvata, O king of auspicious appearance: 'O mighty one, all of this is fitting for your nephew through you.'
वरेण छन्द्यतां राजा लभतां यद्यदिच्छति ।
आवयोस्तपसा सिद्धिं प्राप्नोतु यदि मन्यसे ॥९॥
9. vareṇa chandyatāṁ rājā labhatāṁ yadyadicchati ,
āvayostapasā siddhiṁ prāpnotu yadi manyase.
9. vareṇa chandyatām rājā labhatām yat yat icchati
āvayoḥ tapasā siddhim prāpnotu yadi manyase
9. rājā vareṇa chandyatām yat yat icchati labhatām
yadi manyase (saḥ) āvayoḥ tapasā siddhim prāpnotu
9. Let the king be gratified with a boon, and let him obtain whatever he wishes. If you agree, let him attain success (siddhi) through our penance (tapas).
तत आहूय राजानं सृञ्जयं शुभदर्शनम् ।
पर्वतोऽनुमतं वाक्यमुवाच मुनिपुंगवः ॥१०॥
10. tata āhūya rājānaṁ sṛñjayaṁ śubhadarśanam ,
parvato'numataṁ vākyamuvāca munipuṁgavaḥ.
10. tataḥ āhūya rājānam sṛñjayam śubhadarśanam
parvataḥ anumatam vākyam uvāca munipuṅgavaḥ
10. tataḥ munipuṅgavaḥ parvataḥ śubhadarśanam
rājānam sṛñjayam āhūya anumatam vākyam uvāca
10. Then Parvata, the chief of sages, having called King Sṛñjaya, who possessed an auspicious appearance, spoke the agreed-upon words.
प्रीतौ स्वो नृप सत्कारैस्तव ह्यार्जवसंभृतैः ।
आवाभ्यामभ्यनुज्ञातो वरं नृवर चिन्तय ॥११॥
11. prītau svo nṛpa satkāraistava hyārjavasaṁbhṛtaiḥ ,
āvābhyāmabhyanujñāto varaṁ nṛvara cintaya.
11. prītau svaḥ nṛpa satkāraiḥ tava hi ārjava-saṃbhṛtaiḥ
āvābhyām abhyanujñātaḥ varam nṛvara cintaya
11. he nṛpa tava hi ārjava-saṃbhṛtaiḥ satkāraiḥ āvām prītau svaḥ
he nṛvara āvābhyām abhyanujñātaḥ (san tvam) varam cintaya
11. O King, we are indeed pleased by your sincere hospitality. O best of men, having been granted permission by us two, consider a boon.
देवानामविहिंसायां यद्भवेन्मानुषक्षमम् ।
तद्गृहाण महाराज पूजार्हो नौ मतो भवान् ॥१२॥
12. devānāmavihiṁsāyāṁ yadbhavenmānuṣakṣamam ,
tadgṛhāṇa mahārāja pūjārho nau mato bhavān.
12. devānām avihimsāyām yat bhavet mānuṣakṣamam
tat gṛhāṇa mahārāja pūjārhaḥ nau mataḥ bhavān
12. mahārāja devānām avihimsāyām yat mānuṣakṣamam
bhavet tat gṛhāṇa nau mataḥ bhavān pūjārhaḥ
12. O great king, please accept whatever offering is humanly possible to make without causing harm to the gods. Indeed, we consider you worthy of veneration.
सृञ्जय उवाच ।
प्रीतौ भवन्तौ यदि मे कृतमेतावता मम ।
एष एव परो लाभो निर्वृत्तो मे महाफलः ॥१३॥
13. sṛñjaya uvāca ,
prītau bhavantau yadi me kṛtametāvatā mama ,
eṣa eva paro lābho nirvṛtto me mahāphalaḥ.
13. sṛñjaya uvāca prītau bhavantau yadi me kṛtam etāvatā
mama eṣa eva paraḥ lābhaḥ nirvṛttaḥ me mahāphalaḥ
13. sṛñjaya uvāca yadi bhavantau me prītau,
tataḥ etāvatā mama kṛtam eṣaḥ eva me paraḥ lābhaḥ nirvṛttaḥ mahāphalaḥ
13. Sañjaya said: 'If both of you are pleased with me, then by this much, my purpose is accomplished. This alone is a supreme gain for me, and a great result has been achieved.'
नारद उवाच ।
तमेवंवादिनं भूयः पर्वतः प्रत्यभाषत ।
वृणीष्व राजन्संकल्पो यस्ते हृदि चिरं स्थितः ॥१४॥
14. nārada uvāca ,
tamevaṁvādinaṁ bhūyaḥ parvataḥ pratyabhāṣata ,
vṛṇīṣva rājansaṁkalpo yaste hṛdi ciraṁ sthitaḥ.
14. nārada uvāca tam evaṃvādinam bhūyaḥ parvataḥ pratyabhāṣata
vṛṇīṣva rājan saṃkalpaḥ yaḥ te hṛdi ciram sthitaḥ
14. nārada uvāca parvataḥ bhūyaḥ tam evaṃvādinam pratyabhāṣata rājan,
yaḥ saṃkalpaḥ te hṛdi ciram sthitaḥ,
tam vṛṇīṣva
14. Nārada said: 'To him who spoke thus, Parvata replied again: "O King, choose the desire (saṃkalpa) that has long resided in your heart."'
सृञ्जय उवाच ।
अभीप्सामि सुतं वीरं वीर्यवन्तं दृढव्रतम् ।
आयुष्मन्तं महाभागं देवराजसमद्युतिम् ॥१५॥
15. sṛñjaya uvāca ,
abhīpsāmi sutaṁ vīraṁ vīryavantaṁ dṛḍhavratam ,
āyuṣmantaṁ mahābhāgaṁ devarājasamadyutim.
15. sṛñjaya uvāca abhīpsāmi sutam vīram vīryavantam
dṛḍhavratam āyuṣmantam mahābhāgam devarājasamadyutim
15. sṛñjaya uvāca aham vīram vīryavantam dṛḍhavratam
āyuṣmantam mahābhāgam devarājasamadyutim sutam abhīpsāmi
15. Sañjaya said: 'I desire a son who is heroic, valorous, of firm resolve, long-lived, greatly fortunate, and radiant like the king of the gods (Indra).'
पर्वत उवाच ।
भविष्यत्येष ते कामो न त्वायुष्मान्भविष्यति ।
देवराजाभिभूत्यर्थं संकल्पो ह्येष ते हृदि ॥१६॥
16. parvata uvāca ,
bhaviṣyatyeṣa te kāmo na tvāyuṣmānbhaviṣyati ,
devarājābhibhūtyarthaṁ saṁkalpo hyeṣa te hṛdi.
16. parvataḥ uvāca bhaviṣyati eṣa te kāmaḥ na tu āyuṣmān
bhaviṣyati devarājābhibhūtyartham saṅkalpaḥ hi eṣa te hṛdi
16. parvataḥ uvāca te eṣa kāmaḥ bhaviṣyati tu āyuṣmān na
bhaviṣyati hi eṣa saṅkalpaḥ te hṛdi devarājābhibhūtyartham
16. Parvata said: "This desire of yours will be fulfilled, but he will not be long-lived. Indeed, this intention (saṅkalpa) in your heart is for the purpose of overpowering the king of the gods."
सुवर्णष्ठीवनाच्चैव स्वर्णष्ठीवी भविष्यति ।
रक्ष्यश्च देवराजात्स देवराजसमद्युतिः ॥१७॥
17. suvarṇaṣṭhīvanāccaiva svarṇaṣṭhīvī bhaviṣyati ,
rakṣyaśca devarājātsa devarājasamadyutiḥ.
17. suvarṇaṣṭhīvanāt ca eva svarṇaṣṭhīvī bhaviṣyati
rakṣyaḥ ca devarājāt saḥ devarājasamadyutiḥ
17. ca eva suvarṇaṣṭhīvanāt svarṇaṣṭhīvī bhaviṣyati
ca saḥ devarājasamadyutiḥ devarājāt rakṣyaḥ
17. And indeed, from spitting gold, he will become 'the gold-spitter'. And he, whose radiance is equal to that of the king of gods, must be protected from the king of gods (Indra).
नारद उवाच ।
तच्छ्रुत्वा सृञ्जयो वाक्यं पर्वतस्य महात्मनः ।
प्रसादयामास तदा नैतदेवं भवेदिति ॥१८॥
18. nārada uvāca ,
tacchrutvā sṛñjayo vākyaṁ parvatasya mahātmanaḥ ,
prasādayāmāsa tadā naitadevaṁ bhavediti.
18. nāradaḥ uvāca tat śrutvā sṛñjayaḥ vākyam parvatasya
mahātmanaḥ prasādayāmāsa tadā na etat evam bhavet iti
18. nāradaḥ uvāca sṛñjayaḥ mahātmanaḥ parvatasya tat vākyam
śrutvā tadā na etat evam bhavet iti prasādayāmāsa
18. Narada said: "Having heard that statement (vākya) of the great-souled (mahātman) Parvata, Sṛñjaya then propitiated him, saying, 'May this not be so!'"
आयुष्मान्मे भवेत्पुत्रो भवतस्तपसा मुने ।
न च तं पर्वतः किंचिदुवाचेन्द्रव्यपेक्षया ॥१९॥
19. āyuṣmānme bhavetputro bhavatastapasā mune ,
na ca taṁ parvataḥ kiṁciduvācendravyapekṣayā.
19. āyuṣmān me bhavet putraḥ bhavataḥ tapasā mune
na ca tam parvataḥ kiñcit uvāca indravyapekṣayā
19. mune me putraḥ bhavataḥ tapasā āyuṣmān bhavet
ca parvataḥ indravyapekṣayā tam kiñcit na uvāca
19. "O sage (muni), may my son be long-lived by virtue of your asceticism (tapas)!" And Parvata did not say anything further to him, due to his regard for Indra.
तमहं नृपतिं दीनमब्रुवं पुनरेव तु ।
स्मर्तव्योऽहं महाराज दर्शयिष्यामि ते स्मृतः ॥२०॥
20. tamahaṁ nṛpatiṁ dīnamabruvaṁ punareva tu ,
smartavyo'haṁ mahārāja darśayiṣyāmi te smṛtaḥ.
20. tam aham nṛpatim dīnam abruvam punaḥ eva tu
smartavyaḥ aham mahārāja darśayiṣyāmi te smṛtaḥ
20. aham punaḥ eva tu tam dīnam nṛpatim abruvam,
"mahārāja,
aham smartavyaḥ.
smṛtaḥ (san) te darśayiṣyāmi.
"
20. I then said to that distressed king, "O great king, I am to be remembered. When I am remembered (by you), I will reveal (it) to you."
अहं ते दयितं पुत्रं प्रेतराजवशं गतम् ।
पुनर्दास्यामि तद्रूपं मा शुचः पृथिवीपते ॥२१॥
21. ahaṁ te dayitaṁ putraṁ pretarājavaśaṁ gatam ,
punardāsyāmi tadrūpaṁ mā śucaḥ pṛthivīpate.
21. aham te dayitam putram pretarājavaśam gatam
punaḥ dāsyāmi tad-rūpam mā śucaḥ pṛthivīpate
21. pṛthivīpate,
aham te dayitam putram,
pretarājavaśam gatam,
punaḥ tad-rūpam dāsyāmi.
mā śucaḥ.
21. O king, I will give your beloved son, who has gone under the sway of the King of the Dead, back in his original form. Do not grieve.
एवमुक्त्वा तु नृपतिं प्रयातौ स्वो यथेप्सितम् ।
सृञ्जयश्च यथाकामं प्रविवेश स्वमन्दिरम् ॥२२॥
22. evamuktvā tu nṛpatiṁ prayātau svo yathepsitam ,
sṛñjayaśca yathākāmaṁ praviveśa svamandiram.
22. evam uktvā tu nṛpatim prayātau svau yathā-īpsitam
sṛñjayaḥ ca yathā-kāmam praviveśa sva-mandiram
22. evam uktvā tu nṛpatim,
svau yathā-īpsitam prayātau.
ca sṛñjayaḥ yathā-kāmam sva-mandiram praviveśa.
22. Having thus spoken to the king, both of them departed as they wished. And Sṛñjaya entered his own palace according to his desire.
सृञ्जयस्याथ राजर्षेः कस्मिंश्चित्कालपर्यये ।
जज्ञे पुत्रो महावीर्यस्तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव ॥२३॥
23. sṛñjayasyātha rājarṣeḥ kasmiṁścitkālaparyaye ,
jajñe putro mahāvīryastejasā prajvalanniva.
23. sṛñjayasya atha rājarṣeḥ kasmin-cit kāla-paryaye
jajñe putraḥ mahāvīryaḥ tejasā prajvalan iva
23. atha kasmin-cit kāla-paryaye,
rājarṣeḥ sṛñjayasya mahāvīryaḥ putraḥ tejasā prajvalan iva jajñe.
23. Then, after some lapse of time, a greatly powerful son was born to the royal sage Sṛñjaya, as if blazing with splendor.
ववृधे स यथाकालं सरसीव महोत्पलम् ।
बभूव काञ्चनष्ठीवी यथार्थं नाम तस्य तत् ॥२४॥
24. vavṛdhe sa yathākālaṁ sarasīva mahotpalam ,
babhūva kāñcanaṣṭhīvī yathārthaṁ nāma tasya tat.
24. vāvṛdhe saḥ yathākālam sarasī iva mahautpalam |
babhūva kāñcanasthīvī yathārtham nāma tasya tat
24. saḥ yathākālam sarasī iva mahautpalam vāvṛdhe
tasya tat nāma kāñcanasthīvī yathārtham babhūva
24. He grew in due course, like a great lotus in a lake. Thus, his name "Kañcanasthīvin" (Gold-spitter) became truly fitting.
तदद्भुततमं लोके पप्रथे कुरुसत्तम ।
बुबुधे तच्च देवेन्द्रो वरदानं महात्मनोः ॥२५॥
25. tadadbhutatamaṁ loke paprathe kurusattama ,
bubudhe tacca devendro varadānaṁ mahātmanoḥ.
25. tat adbhutatamam loke paprathe kurusattama |
bubudhe tat ca devendraḥ varadānam mahātmanoḥ
25. kurusattama tat adbhutatamam loke paprathe ca
devendraḥ tat mahātmanoḥ varadānam bubudhe
25. O best of Kurus, that most wondrous event became famous throughout the world. And the king of gods (Devendra) understood that it was a boon granted to the two great souls.
ततस्त्वभिभवाद्भीतो बृहस्पतिमते स्थितः ।
कुमारस्यान्तरप्रेक्षी बभूव बलवृत्रहा ॥२६॥
26. tatastvabhibhavādbhīto bṛhaspatimate sthitaḥ ,
kumārasyāntaraprekṣī babhūva balavṛtrahā.
26. tataḥ tu abhibhavāt bhītaḥ bṛhaspatimate sthitaḥ
| kumārasya antaraprekṣī babhūva balavṛtrahā
26. tataḥ tu abhibhavāt bhītaḥ bṛhaspatimate sthitaḥ
balavṛtrahā kumārasya antaraprekṣī babhūva
26. Then, indeed, being afraid of being overpowered, and abiding by the counsel of Bṛhaspati, Indra (the killer of Bala and Vṛtra) became one who sought a vulnerability in Kumāra.
चोदयामास वज्रं स दिव्यास्त्रं मूर्तिसंस्थितम् ।
व्याघ्रो भूत्वा जहीमं त्वं राजपुत्रमिति प्रभो ॥२७॥
27. codayāmāsa vajraṁ sa divyāstraṁ mūrtisaṁsthitam ,
vyāghro bhūtvā jahīmaṁ tvaṁ rājaputramiti prabho.
27. codayām āsa vajram saḥ divyāstram mūrtisaṃsthitam |
vyāghraḥ bhūtvā jahi imam tvam rājaputram iti prabho
27. prabho saḥ mūrtisaṃsthitam divyāstram vajram codayām
āsa (iti) tvam vyāghraḥ bhūtvā imam rājaputram jahi
27. O Lord, he (Indra) then commanded his thunderbolt (vajra), the divine weapon embodied, saying, "You, becoming a tiger, kill this prince!"
विवृद्धः किल वीर्येण मामेषोऽभिभविष्यति ।
सृञ्जयस्य सुतो वज्र यथैनं पर्वतो ददौ ॥२८॥
28. vivṛddhaḥ kila vīryeṇa māmeṣo'bhibhaviṣyati ,
sṛñjayasya suto vajra yathainaṁ parvato dadau.
28. vivṛddhaḥ kila vīryeṇa mām eṣaḥ abhibhaviṣyati
sṛñjayasya sutaḥ vajra yathā enam parvataḥ dadau
28. kila eṣaḥ sṛñjayasya sutaḥ vivṛddhaḥ vīryeṇa mām
abhibhaviṣyati vajra yathā enam parvataḥ dadau
28. Indeed, this son of Sṛñjaya, grown powerful, will surely overpower me, O Vajra, just as the mountain granted him.
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण वज्रः परपुरंजयः ।
कुमारस्यान्तरप्रेक्षी नित्यमेवान्वपद्यत ॥२९॥
29. evamuktastu śakreṇa vajraḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ ,
kumārasyāntaraprekṣī nityamevānvapadyata.
29. evam uktaḥ tu śakreṇa vajraḥ parapurañjayaḥ
kumārasya antaraprekṣī nityam eva anvapatyata
29. evam śakreṇa uktaḥ tu parapurañjayaḥ vajraḥ
kumārasya antaraprekṣī nityam eva anvapatyata
29. Thus addressed by Indra, Vajra, the conqueror of enemy cities, constantly followed, looking for an opportunity concerning the boy.
सृञ्जयोऽपि सुतं प्राप्य देवराजसमद्युतिम् ।
हृष्टः सान्तःपुरो राजा वननित्योऽभवत्तदा ॥३०॥
30. sṛñjayo'pi sutaṁ prāpya devarājasamadyutim ,
hṛṣṭaḥ sāntaḥpuro rājā vananityo'bhavattadā.
30. sṛñjayaḥ api sutam prāpya devarājasamadyutim
hṛṣṭaḥ sāntaḥpuraḥ rājā vananityaḥ abhavat tadā
30. rājā sṛñjayaḥ api devarājasamadyutim sutam prāpya
hṛṣṭaḥ sāntaḥpuraḥ tadā vananityaḥ abhavat
30. King Sṛñjaya, having obtained a son whose radiance was equal to the king of gods, became delighted along with his inner palace (wives) and then lived constantly in the forest.
ततो भागीरथीतीरे कदाचिद्वननिर्झरे ।
धात्रीद्वितीयो बालः स क्रीडार्थं पर्यधावत ॥३१॥
31. tato bhāgīrathītīre kadācidvananirjhare ,
dhātrīdvitīyo bālaḥ sa krīḍārthaṁ paryadhāvata.

31. Thereafter, one day, on the bank of the Bhāgīrathī river, by a forest stream, that boy, accompanied by his wet nurse, ran about for the purpose of playing.
पञ्चवर्षकदेशीयो बालो नागेन्द्रविक्रमः ।
सहसोत्पतितं व्याघ्रमाससाद महाबलः ॥३२॥
32. pañcavarṣakadeśīyo bālo nāgendravikramaḥ ,
sahasotpatitaṁ vyāghramāsasāda mahābalaḥ.
तेन चैव विनिष्पिष्टो वेपमानो नृपात्मजः ।
व्यसुः पपात मेदिन्यां ततो धात्री विचुक्रुशे ॥३३॥
33. tena caiva viniṣpiṣṭo vepamāno nṛpātmajaḥ ,
vyasuḥ papāta medinyāṁ tato dhātrī vicukruśe.
हत्वा तु राजपुत्रं स तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।
शार्दूलो देवराजस्य माययान्तर्हितस्तदा ॥३४॥
34. hatvā tu rājaputraṁ sa tatraivāntaradhīyata ,
śārdūlo devarājasya māyayāntarhitastadā.
धात्र्यास्तु निनदं श्रुत्वा रुदत्याः परमार्तवत् ।
अभ्यधावत तं देशं स्वयमेव महीपतिः ॥३५॥
35. dhātryāstu ninadaṁ śrutvā rudatyāḥ paramārtavat ,
abhyadhāvata taṁ deśaṁ svayameva mahīpatiḥ.
स ददर्श गतासुं तं शयानं पीतशोणितम् ।
कुमारं विगतानन्दं निशाकरमिव च्युतम् ॥३६॥
36. sa dadarśa gatāsuṁ taṁ śayānaṁ pītaśoṇitam ,
kumāraṁ vigatānandaṁ niśākaramiva cyutam.

36. He saw that lifeless boy lying there, his blood having been drunk, devoid of joy, like a fallen moon.
स तमुत्सङ्गमारोप्य परिपीडितवक्षसम् ।
पुत्रं रुधिरसंसिक्तं पर्यदेवयदातुरः ॥३७॥
37. sa tamutsaṅgamāropya paripīḍitavakṣasam ,
putraṁ rudhirasaṁsiktaṁ paryadevayadāturaḥ.

37. Greatly distressed and with his own chest aching, he placed that son, whose chest was greatly afflicted and who was soaked in blood, on his lap and lamented.
ततस्ता मातरस्तस्य रुदन्त्यः शोककर्शिताः ।
अभ्यधावन्त तं देशं यत्र राजा स सृञ्जयः ॥३८॥
38. tatastā mātarastasya rudantyaḥ śokakarśitāḥ ,
abhyadhāvanta taṁ deśaṁ yatra rājā sa sṛñjayaḥ.

abhyadhāvanta tam deśam yatra rājā sa sṛñjayaḥ

38. Then his mothers, weeping and emaciated by grief, rushed to the place where King Sṛñjaya was.
ततः स राजा सस्मार मामन्तर्गतमानसः ।
तच्चाहं चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा गतवांस्तस्य दर्शनम् ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ sa rājā sasmāra māmantargatamānasaḥ ,
taccāhaṁ cintitaṁ jñātvā gatavāṁstasya darśanam.
39. tataḥ sa rājā sasmāra mām antargatamānasaḥ tat
ca aham cintitam jñātvā gatavān tasya darśanam
39. tataḥ sa antargatamānasaḥ rājā mām sasmāra ca
aham tat cintitam jñātvā tasya darśanam gatavān
39. Then that king, with his mind absorbed in deep thought, remembered me. And I, understanding his thought, went to meet him.
स मयैतानि वाक्यानि श्रावितः शोकलालसः ।
यानि ते यदुवीरेण कथितानि महीपते ॥४०॥
40. sa mayaitāni vākyāni śrāvitaḥ śokalālasaḥ ,
yāni te yaduvīreṇa kathitāni mahīpate.
संजीवितश्चापि मया वासवानुमते तदा ।
भवितव्यं तथा तच्च न तच्छक्यमतोऽन्यथा ॥४१॥
41. saṁjīvitaścāpi mayā vāsavānumate tadā ,
bhavitavyaṁ tathā tacca na tacchakyamato'nyathā.
अत ऊर्ध्वं कुमारः स स्वर्णष्ठीवी महायशाः ।
चित्तं प्रसादयामास पितुर्मातुश्च वीर्यवान् ॥४२॥
42. ata ūrdhvaṁ kumāraḥ sa svarṇaṣṭhīvī mahāyaśāḥ ,
cittaṁ prasādayāmāsa piturmātuśca vīryavān.
कारयामास राज्यं स पितरि स्वर्गते विभुः ।
वर्षाणामेकशतवत्सहस्रं भीमविक्रमः ॥४३॥
43. kārayāmāsa rājyaṁ sa pitari svargate vibhuḥ ,
varṣāṇāmekaśatavatsahasraṁ bhīmavikramaḥ.
तत इष्ट्वा महायज्ञैर्बहुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः ।
तर्पयामास देवांश्च पितॄंश्चैव महाद्युतिः ॥४४॥
44. tata iṣṭvā mahāyajñairbahubhirbhūridakṣiṇaiḥ ,
tarpayāmāsa devāṁśca pitṝṁścaiva mahādyutiḥ.
उत्पाद्य च बहून्पुत्रान्कुलसंतानकारिणः ।
कालेन महता राजन्कालधर्ममुपेयिवान् ॥४५॥
45. utpādya ca bahūnputrānkulasaṁtānakāriṇaḥ ,
kālena mahatā rājankāladharmamupeyivān.
स त्वं राजेन्द्र संजातं शोकमेतन्निवर्तय ।
यथा त्वां केशवः प्राह व्यासश्च सुमहातपाः ॥४६॥
46. sa tvaṁ rājendra saṁjātaṁ śokametannivartaya ,
yathā tvāṁ keśavaḥ prāha vyāsaśca sumahātapāḥ.
पितृपैतामहं राज्यमास्थाय दुरमुद्वह ।
इष्ट्वा पुण्यैर्महायज्ञैरिष्टाँल्लोकानवाप्स्यसि ॥४७॥
47. pitṛpaitāmahaṁ rājyamāsthāya duramudvaha ,
iṣṭvā puṇyairmahāyajñairiṣṭāँllokānavāpsyasi.
