वैशंपायन उवाच ।
युधिष्ठिरस्तमासाद्य तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषम् ।
अभ्यवादयत प्रीतः शिरसा नाम कीर्तयन् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
yudhiṣṭhirastamāsādya tapasā dagdhakilbiṣam ,
abhyavādayata prītaḥ śirasā nāma kīrtayan.

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Having reached him who was purified of impurities by asceticism (tapas), Yudhiṣṭhira joyfully greeted him with his head bowed, pronouncing his (Yudhiṣṭhira's) own name.
ततः कृष्णा च भीमश्च यमौ चापि यशस्विनौ ।
शिरोभिः प्राप्य राजर्षिं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥२॥
2. tataḥ kṛṣṇā ca bhīmaśca yamau cāpi yaśasvinau ,
śirobhiḥ prāpya rājarṣiṁ parivāryopatasthire.
2. tataḥ kṛṣṇā ca bhīmaḥ ca yamau ca api yaśasvinau
śirobhiḥ prāpya rājarṣim parivārya upatastire
2. Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Bhīma, and also the glorious twins, having approached the royal sage (rājarṣi), surrounded him and stood near.
तथैव धौम्यो धर्मज्ञः पाण्डवानां पुरोहितः ।
यथान्यायमुपाक्रान्तस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥३॥
3. tathaiva dhaumyo dharmajñaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ purohitaḥ ,
yathānyāyamupākrāntastamṛṣiṁ saṁśitavratam.
3. tathā eva dhaumyaḥ dharmajñaḥ pāṇḍavānām purohitaḥ
yathānyāyam upākrāntaḥ tam ṛṣim saṃśitavratam
3. In the same way, Dhaumya, the priest of the Pandavas and one who understood natural law (dharma), properly approached that sage of firm vows.
अन्वजानात्स धर्मज्ञो मुनिर्दिव्येन चक्षुषा ।
पाण्डोः पुत्रान्कुरुश्रेष्ठानास्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. anvajānātsa dharmajño munirdivyena cakṣuṣā ,
pāṇḍoḥ putrānkuruśreṣṭhānāsyatāmiti cābravīt.
4. anvajānāt saḥ dharmajñaḥ muniḥ divyena cakṣuṣā
pāṇḍoḥ putrān kuruśreṣṭhān āsyatām iti ca abravīt
4. That sage, who understood natural law (dharma), recognized the sons of Pandu, the foremost among the Kurus, with his divine vision and said, 'Please be seated.'
कुरूणामृषभं प्राज्ञं पूजयित्वा महातपाः ।
सह भ्रातृभिरासीनं पर्यपृच्छदनामयम् ॥५॥
5. kurūṇāmṛṣabhaṁ prājñaṁ pūjayitvā mahātapāḥ ,
saha bhrātṛbhirāsīnaṁ paryapṛcchadanāmayam.
5. kurūṇām ṛṣabham prājñam pūjayitvā mahātapaḥ
saha bhrātṛbhiḥ āsīnam paryapṛcchat anāmayam
5. Having honored the wise chief of the Kurus, who was seated with his brothers, the great ascetic (tapas) inquired about their well-being.
नानृते कुरुषे भावं कच्चिद्धर्मे च वर्तसे ।
मतापित्रोश्च ते वृत्तिः कच्चित्पार्थ न सीदति ॥६॥
6. nānṛte kuruṣe bhāvaṁ kacciddharme ca vartase ,
matāpitrośca te vṛttiḥ kaccitpārtha na sīdati.
6. na anṛte kuruṣe bhāvam kaccit dharme ca vartase
mātāpitroḥ ca te vṛttiḥ kaccit pārtha na sīdati
6. Surely you do not incline your mind towards falsehood, do you? And do you conduct yourself in accordance with natural law (dharma)? O Partha, I hope your duty towards your parents does not falter.
कच्चित्ते गुरवः सर्वे वृद्धा वैद्याश्च पूजिताः ।
कच्चिन्न कुरुषे भावं पार्थ पापेषु कर्मसु ॥७॥
7. kaccitte guravaḥ sarve vṛddhā vaidyāśca pūjitāḥ ,
kaccinna kuruṣe bhāvaṁ pārtha pāpeṣu karmasu.
7. kaccit te guravaḥ sarve vṛddhāḥ vaidyāḥ ca pūjitāḥ
kaccit na kuruṣe bhāvam pārtha pāpeṣu karmasu
7. I hope that all your teachers, elders, and physicians are duly honored. And, O Pārtha, I hope that you do not harbor an inclination towards sinful actions (karma).
सुकृतं प्रतिकर्तुं च कच्चिद्धातुं च दुष्कृतम् ।
यथान्यायं कुरुश्रेष्ठ जानासि न च कत्थसे ॥८॥
8. sukṛtaṁ pratikartuṁ ca kacciddhātuṁ ca duṣkṛtam ,
yathānyāyaṁ kuruśreṣṭha jānāsi na ca katthase.
8. sukṛtam pratikartum ca kaccit ghātum ca duṣkṛtam
yathānyāyam kurugreṣṭha jānāsi na ca katthase
8. O best of Kurus, I hope that you know how to return good deeds and to counteract evil ones, acting justly, and yet you do not boast.
यथार्हं मानिताः कच्चित्त्वया नन्दन्ति साधवः ।
वनेष्वपि वसन्कच्चिद्धर्ममेवानुवर्तसे ॥९॥
9. yathārhaṁ mānitāḥ kaccittvayā nandanti sādhavaḥ ,
vaneṣvapi vasankacciddharmamevānuvartase.
9. yathārham mānitāḥ kaccit tvayā nandanti sādhavaḥ
vaneṣu api vasan kaccit dharmam eva anuvaratase
9. I hope that virtuous people, duly honored by you, are content. And while dwelling even in the forests, I hope you continue to follow the natural law (dharma) alone.
कच्चिद्धौम्यस्त्वदाचारैर्न पार्थ परितप्यते ।
दानधर्मतपःशौचैरार्जवेन तितिक्षया ॥१०॥
10. kacciddhaumyastvadācārairna pārtha paritapyate ,
dānadharmatapaḥśaucairārjavena titikṣayā.
10. kaccit dhaumyaḥ tvadācāraiḥ na pārtha paritapyate
dānadharmatapaḥśaucaiḥ ārjavena titikṣayā
10. O Pārtha, I hope that Dhaumya is not displeased by your conduct, which is characterized by generosity (dāna), adherence to natural law (dharma), austerity (tapas), purity, straightforwardness, and forbearance.
पितृपैतामहं वृत्तं कच्चित्पार्थानुवर्तसे ।
कच्चिद्राजर्षियातेन पथा गच्छसि पाण्डव ॥११॥
11. pitṛpaitāmahaṁ vṛttaṁ kaccitpārthānuvartase ,
kaccidrājarṣiyātena pathā gacchasi pāṇḍava.
11. pitṛpaitāmaham vṛttam kaccit pārtha anuvartase
kaccit rājarṣiyātena pathā gacchasi pāṇḍava
11. O Pārtha, I hope you are following the conduct established by your fathers and grandfathers. O Pāṇḍava, I hope you are proceeding on the path trodden by the royal sages.
स्वे स्वे किल कुले जाते पुत्रे नप्तरि वा पुनः ।
पितरः पितृलोकस्थाः शोचन्ति च हसन्ति च ॥१२॥
12. sve sve kila kule jāte putre naptari vā punaḥ ,
pitaraḥ pitṛlokasthāḥ śocanti ca hasanti ca.
12. sve sve kila kule jāte putre naptari vā punaḥ
pitaraḥ pitṛlokasthāḥ śocanti ca hasanti ca
12. Indeed, when a son or grandson is born in their respective families, the ancestors, residing in the ancestral world (pitṛloka), both grieve and rejoice.
किं न्वस्य दुष्कृतेऽस्माभिः संप्राप्तव्यं भविष्यति ।
किं चास्य सुकृतेऽस्माभिः प्राप्तव्यमिति शोभनम् ॥१३॥
13. kiṁ nvasya duṣkṛte'smābhiḥ saṁprāptavyaṁ bhaviṣyati ,
kiṁ cāsya sukṛte'smābhiḥ prāptavyamiti śobhanam.
13. kim nu asya duṣkṛte asmābhiḥ samprāptavyam bhaviṣyati
kim ca asya sukṛte asmābhiḥ prāptavyam iti śobhanam
13. Indeed, what (consequences) will we have to experience from his misdeeds? And what good (consequences) will we have to obtain from his good deeds? This (question or prospect) is excellent!
पिता माता तथैवाग्निर्गुरुरात्मा च पञ्चमः ।
यस्यैते पूजिताः पार्थ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥१४॥
14. pitā mātā tathaivāgnirgururātmā ca pañcamaḥ ,
yasyaite pūjitāḥ pārtha tasya lokāvubhau jitau.
14. pitā mātā tatha eva agniḥ guruḥ ātmā ca pañcamaḥ
yasya ete pūjitāḥ pārtha tasya lokau ubhau jitau
14. Father, mother, and similarly the sacred fire, the preceptor (guru), and one's self (ātman) as the fifth – O Pārtha, for one by whom these are revered, both worlds are conquered.
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च प्लवमाना विहायसा ।
जुषन्ते पर्वतश्रेष्ठमृषयः पर्वसंधिषु ॥१५॥
15. abbhakṣā vāyubhakṣāśca plavamānā vihāyasā ,
juṣante parvataśreṣṭhamṛṣayaḥ parvasaṁdhiṣu.
15. abbhakṣāḥ vāyubhakṣāḥ ca plavamānāḥ vihāyasā
juṣante parvataśreṣṭham ṛṣayaḥ parvasandhiṣu
15. Sages (ṛṣi), who subsist on water and air, are seen hovering through the sky and frequenting the chief of mountains in its various peaks and valleys.
कामिनः सह कान्ताभिः परस्परमनुव्रताः ।
दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गस्थास्तथा किंपुरुषा नृप ॥१६॥
16. kāminaḥ saha kāntābhiḥ parasparamanuvratāḥ ,
dṛśyante śailaśṛṅgasthāstathā kiṁpuruṣā nṛpa.
16. kāminaḥ saha kāntābhiḥ parasparam anuvratāḥ
dṛśyante śailaśṛṅgasthāḥ tathā kiṃpuruṣāḥ nṛpa
16. O King, the Kiṃpuruṣas are also seen stationed on mountain peaks, with their beloved companions, mutually devoted to each other.
अरजांसि च वासांसि वसानाः कौशिकानि च ।
दृश्यन्ते बहवः पार्थ गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ॥१७॥
17. arajāṁsi ca vāsāṁsi vasānāḥ kauśikāni ca ,
dṛśyante bahavaḥ pārtha gandharvāpsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ.
17. arajāṃsi ca vāsāṃsi vasānāḥ kauśikāni ca
dṛśyante bahavaḥ pārtha gandharvaapsarasām gaṇāḥ
17. O Pārtha, many hosts of Gandharvas and Apsaras are seen, wearing immaculate, silken garments.
विद्याधरगणाश्चैव स्रग्विणः प्रियदर्शनाः ।
महोरगगणाश्चैव सुपर्णाश्चोरगादयः ॥१८॥
18. vidyādharagaṇāścaiva sragviṇaḥ priyadarśanāḥ ,
mahoragagaṇāścaiva suparṇāścoragādayaḥ.
18. vidyādharagaṇāḥ ca eva sragviṇaḥ priyadarśanāḥ
mahoragagaṇāḥ ca eva suparṇāḥ ca uragādayaḥ
18. And indeed, groups of Vidyādharas, adorned with garlands and pleasant to behold, and also hosts of great serpents (uraga), Suparṇas, and other serpent-like beings.
अस्य चोपरि शैलस्य श्रूयते पर्वसंधिषु ।
भेरीपणवशङ्खानां मृदङ्गानां च निस्वनः ॥१९॥
19. asya copari śailasya śrūyate parvasaṁdhiṣu ,
bherīpaṇavaśaṅkhānāṁ mṛdaṅgānāṁ ca nisvanaḥ.
19. asya ca upari śailasya śrūyate parvasandhiṣu
bherīpaṇavaśaṅkhānām mṛdaṅgānām ca nisvanaḥ
19. And above this mountain, amidst its ridges, the sound of kettledrums, small drums, conches, and mṛdaṅgas is heard.
इहस्थैरेव तत्सर्वं श्रोतव्यं भरतर्षभाः ।
न कार्या वः कथंचित्स्यात्तत्राभिसरणे मतिः ॥२०॥
20. ihasthaireva tatsarvaṁ śrotavyaṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ ,
na kāryā vaḥ kathaṁcitsyāttatrābhisaraṇe matiḥ.
20. ihastaiḥ eva tat sarvam śrotavyam bharatarṣabhāḥ
na kāryā vaḥ kathaṃcit syāt tatra abhisaraṇe matiḥ
20. O best of Bharatas, all of that should only be heard by those who are here. You should not, by any means, have the intention of going there.
न चाप्यतः परं शक्यं गन्तुं भरतसत्तमाः ।
विहारो ह्यत्र देवानाममानुषगतिस्तु सा ॥२१॥
21. na cāpyataḥ paraṁ śakyaṁ gantuṁ bharatasattamāḥ ,
vihāro hyatra devānāmamānuṣagatistu sā.
21. na ca api ataḥ param śakyam gantum bharatasattamāḥ
vihāraḥ hi atra devānām amānuṣagatiḥ tu sā
21. O best of Bharatas, it is also not possible to go beyond this point. For this indeed is the pleasure ground of the gods, and that passage is one accessible only by non-humans (superhuman access).
ईषच्चपलकर्माणं मनुष्यमिह भारत ।
द्विषन्ति सर्वभूतानि ताडयन्ति च राक्षसाः ॥२२॥
22. īṣaccapalakarmāṇaṁ manuṣyamiha bhārata ,
dviṣanti sarvabhūtāni tāḍayanti ca rākṣasāḥ.
22. īṣat capalakarmāṇam manuṣyam iha bhārata
dviṣanti sarvabhūtāni tāḍayanti ca rākṣasāḥ
22. O Bharata, here, all beings despise a man whose actions (karma) are even slightly unsteady, and rākṣasas harass him.
अभ्यतिक्रम्य शिखरं शैलस्यास्य युधिष्ठिर ।
गतिः परमसिद्धानां देवर्षीणां प्रकाशते ॥२३॥
23. abhyatikramya śikharaṁ śailasyāsya yudhiṣṭhira ,
gatiḥ paramasiddhānāṁ devarṣīṇāṁ prakāśate.
23. abhyatikramya śikharam śailasya asya yudhiṣṭhira
gatiḥ paramasiddhānām devarṣīṇām prakāśate
23. O Yudhishthira, beyond the peak of this mountain, the path of the greatly accomplished (paramasiddha) divine sages (devarṣi) becomes manifest.
चापलादिह गच्छन्तं पार्थ यानमतः परम् ।
अयःशूलादिभिर्घ्नन्ति राक्षसाः शत्रुसूदन ॥२४॥
24. cāpalādiha gacchantaṁ pārtha yānamataḥ param ,
ayaḥśūlādibhirghnanti rākṣasāḥ śatrusūdana.
24. cāpalāt iha gacchantam pārtha yānam ataḥ param
ayaḥśūlādibhiḥ ghnanti rākṣasāḥ śatrusūdana
24. O Pārtha, slayer of foes (śatrusūdana)! Here, those who proceed further in vehicles due to restlessness are struck by Rākṣasas with iron spears and other such weapons.
अप्सरोभिः परिवृतः समृद्ध्या नरवाहनः ।
इह वैश्रवणस्तात पर्वसंधिषु दृश्यते ॥२५॥
25. apsarobhiḥ parivṛtaḥ samṛddhyā naravāhanaḥ ,
iha vaiśravaṇastāta parvasaṁdhiṣu dṛśyate.
25. apsarobhiḥ parivṛtaḥ samṛddhyā naravāhanaḥ
iha vaiśravaṇaḥ tāta parvasandhiṣu dṛśyate
25. O dear one (tāta), here at the mountain junctions, Vaiśravaṇa, also known as Naravāhana (whose vehicle is men), is seen surrounded by Apsaras (celestial nymphs) and imbued with great prosperity.
शिखरे तं समासीनमधिपं सर्वरक्षसाम् ।
प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि भानुमन्तमिवोदितम् ॥२६॥
26. śikhare taṁ samāsīnamadhipaṁ sarvarakṣasām ,
prekṣante sarvabhūtāni bhānumantamivoditam.
26. śikhare tam samāsīnam adhipam sarvarakṣasām
prekṣante sarvabhūtāni bhānumantam iva uditam
26. All beings observe him, the lord of all Rākṣasas, seated upon the peak, just as they would gaze upon the risen sun.
देवदानवसिद्धानां तथा वैश्रवणस्य च ।
गिरेः शिखरमुद्यानमिदं भरतसत्तम ॥२७॥
27. devadānavasiddhānāṁ tathā vaiśravaṇasya ca ,
gireḥ śikharamudyānamidaṁ bharatasattama.
27. devadānavasiddhānām tathā vaiśravaṇasya ca
gireḥ śikharam udyānam idam bharatasattama
27. O best among the Bhāratas, this mountain peak is a garden for gods, demons, perfected beings (siddha), and Kubera (Vaiśravaṇa).
उपासीनस्य धनदं तुम्बुरोः पर्वसंधिषु ।
गीतसामस्वनस्तात श्रूयते गन्धमादने ॥२८॥
28. upāsīnasya dhanadaṁ tumburoḥ parvasaṁdhiṣu ,
gītasāmasvanastāta śrūyate gandhamādane.
28. upāsīnasya dhanadam tumburoḥ parvasandhiṣu
gītasāmasvanaḥ tāta śrūyate gandhamādane
28. O dear one, on Mount Gandhamādana, the sound of Sāma songs is heard at the mountain ridges from Tumburu, who sits attending upon Kubera (dhanada).
एतदेवंविधं चित्रमिह तात युधिष्ठिर ।
प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि बहुशः पर्वसंधिषु ॥२९॥
29. etadevaṁvidhaṁ citramiha tāta yudhiṣṭhira ,
prekṣante sarvabhūtāni bahuśaḥ parvasaṁdhiṣu.
29. etat evaṃvidham citram iha tāta yudhiṣṭhira
prekṣante sarvabhūtāni bahuśaḥ parvasandhiṣu
29. O dear Yudhiṣṭhira, all beings repeatedly behold this kind of wonderful spectacle here at the mountain ridges.
भुञ्जानाः सर्वभोज्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च ।
वसध्वं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठा यावदर्जुनदर्शनम् ॥३०॥
30. bhuñjānāḥ sarvabhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca ,
vasadhvaṁ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhā yāvadarjunadarśanam.
30. bhuñjānāḥ sarvabhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca
vasadhvam pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhāḥ yāvat arjunadarśanam
30. O best among the Pāṇḍavas, stay here, enjoying all the delicious edibles and fruits, until Arjuna is seen.
न तात चपलैर्भाव्यमिह प्राप्तैः कथंचन ।
उषित्वेह यथाकामं यथाश्रद्धं विहृत्य च ।
ततः शस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठ पृथिवीं पालयिष्यसि ॥३१॥
31. na tāta capalairbhāvyamiha prāptaiḥ kathaṁcana ,
uṣitveha yathākāmaṁ yathāśraddhaṁ vihṛtya ca ,
tataḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭha pṛthivīṁ pālayiṣyasi.
31. na tāta capalaiḥ bhāvyam iha prāptaiḥ
kathañcana | uṣitvā iha yathākāmam
yathāśraddham vihṛtya ca | tataḥ
śastrabṛtām śreṣṭha pṛthivīm pālayiṣyasi
31. Dear son, those who arrive here should by no means be fickle. After residing here as you wish and wandering about as you please, then, O best among weapon-bearers, you will protect the earth.
