वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथोक्तो वासुदेवेन नित्यमन्युरमर्षणः ।
सदश्ववत्समाधावद्बभाषे तदनन्तरम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathokto vāsudevena nityamanyuramarṣaṇaḥ ,
sadaśvavatsamādhāvadbabhāṣe tadanantaram.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tathā uktaḥ vāsudevena nityamanyuḥ
amarṣaṇaḥ sadaśvavat samādhāvat babhāṣe tat anantaram
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Thus addressed by Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), Arjuna, who was characterized by constant anger (manyu) and intolerance, surged forward like a noble horse and then spoke.
अन्यथा मां चिकीर्षन्तमन्यथा मन्यसेऽच्युत ।
प्रणीतभावमत्यन्तं युधि सत्यपराक्रमम् ॥२॥
2. anyathā māṁ cikīrṣantamanyathā manyase'cyuta ,
praṇītabhāvamatyantaṁ yudhi satyaparākramam.
2. anyathā mām cikīrṣantam anyathā manyase acyuta
praṇītabhāvam atyantam yudhi satyaparākramam
2. O Acyuta, you perceive me (māṃ) as intending to act (cikīrṣantam) in one manner (anyathā), while you view me (manyase) in another light (anyathā). Yet, I am one of utterly devoted nature (praṇītabhāvam atyantam) and true valor (satyaparākramam) in battle (yudhi).
वेत्थ दाशार्ह सत्त्वं मे दीर्घकालं सहोषितः ।
उत वा मां न जानासि प्लवन्ह्रद इवाप्लवः ।
तस्मादप्रतिरूपाभिर्वाग्भिर्मां त्वं समर्छसि ॥३॥
3. vettha dāśārha sattvaṁ me dīrghakālaṁ sahoṣitaḥ ,
uta vā māṁ na jānāsi plavanhrada ivāplavaḥ ,
tasmādapratirūpābhirvāgbhirmāṁ tvaṁ samarchasi.
3. vettha dāśārha sattvaṃ me dīrghakālaṃ
saha uṣitaḥ uta vā māṃ na jānāsi
plavanhradaḥ iva aplavaḥ tasmāt
apratirūpābhiḥ vāgbhiḥ māṃ tvaṃ samarchasi
3. O Daśārha, you have lived with me for a long time; do you truly know my character (sattva)? Or perhaps you do not know me, like a non-swimmer in a pond meant for swimming. Therefore, you address me with such unfitting words.
कथं हि भीमसेनं मां जानन्कश्चन माधव ।
ब्रूयादप्रतिरूपाणि यथा मां वक्तुमर्हसि ॥४॥
4. kathaṁ hi bhīmasenaṁ māṁ jānankaścana mādhava ,
brūyādapratirūpāṇi yathā māṁ vaktumarhasi.
4. kathaṃ hi bhīmasenaṃ māṃ jānan kaścana mādhava
brūyāt apratirūpāṇi yathā māṃ vaktum arhasi
4. O Mādhava, knowing me to be Bhīmasena, how could anyone speak inappropriate words to me, just as you are doing now?
तस्मादिदं प्रवक्ष्यामि वचनं वृष्णिनन्दन ।
आत्मनः पौरुषं चैव बलं च न समं परैः ॥५॥
5. tasmādidaṁ pravakṣyāmi vacanaṁ vṛṣṇinandana ,
ātmanaḥ pauruṣaṁ caiva balaṁ ca na samaṁ paraiḥ.
5. tasmāt idaṃ pravakṣyāmi vacanaṃ vṛṣṇinandan
ātmanaḥ pauruṣaṃ ca eva balaṃ ca na samaṃ paraiḥ
5. Therefore, O delight of the Vṛṣṇis, I will declare this statement: my own valor (pauruṣa) and strength are not equal to others.
सर्वथा नार्यकर्मैतत्प्रशंसा स्वयमात्मनः ।
अतिवादापविद्धस्तु वक्ष्यामि बलमात्मनः ॥६॥
6. sarvathā nāryakarmaitatpraśaṁsā svayamātmanaḥ ,
ativādāpaviddhastu vakṣyāmi balamātmanaḥ.
6. sarvathā na arya-karma etat praśaṃsā svayam ātmanaḥ
ativāda-apaviddhaḥ tu vakṣyāmi balam ātmanaḥ
6. Self-praise is in no way a noble act. However, having been assailed by insults, I will declare my own strength.
पश्येमे रोदसी कृष्ण ययोरासन्निमाः प्रजाः ।
अचले चाप्यनन्ते च प्रतिष्ठे सर्वमातरौ ॥७॥
7. paśyeme rodasī kṛṣṇa yayorāsannimāḥ prajāḥ ,
acale cāpyanante ca pratiṣṭhe sarvamātarau.
7. paśya ime rodasī kṛṣṇa yayoḥ āsan imāḥ prajāḥ
acale ca api anante ca pratiṣṭhe sarvamātarau
7. O Kṛṣṇa, behold these heaven and earth, from which these beings originated. They are unmoving, infinite, and the mothers of all, serving as the very foundations.
यदीमे सहसा क्रुद्धे समेयातां शिले इव ।
अहमेते निगृह्णीयां बाहुभ्यां सचराचरे ॥८॥
8. yadīme sahasā kruddhe sameyātāṁ śile iva ,
ahamete nigṛhṇīyāṁ bāhubhyāṁ sacarācare.
8. yadi ime sahasā kruddhe sameyātām śile iva
aham ete nigṛhṇīyām bāhubhyām sacarācare
8. If these two (heaven and earth), enraged, were to suddenly crash together like two rocks, I would seize them with my two arms, encompassing all moving and non-moving beings within them.
पश्यैतदन्तरं बाह्वोर्महापरिघयोरिव ।
य एतत्प्राप्य मुच्येत न तं पश्यामि पूरुषम् ॥९॥
9. paśyaitadantaraṁ bāhvormahāparighayoriva ,
ya etatprāpya mucyeta na taṁ paśyāmi pūruṣam.
9. paśya etat antaram bāhvoḥ mahāparighayoḥ iva
yaḥ etat prāpya mucyeta na tam paśyāmi pūruṣam
9. Behold this space between my arms, which are like two mighty iron clubs. I see no person (puruṣa) who, having entered this space, could escape.
हिमवांश्च समुद्रश्च वज्री च बलभित्स्वयम् ।
मयाभिपन्नं त्रायेरन्बलमास्थाय न त्रयः ॥१०॥
10. himavāṁśca samudraśca vajrī ca balabhitsvayam ,
mayābhipannaṁ trāyeranbalamāsthāya na trayaḥ.
10. himavān ca samudraḥ ca vajrī ca balabhit svayam
mayā abhipannam trāyeran balam āsthāya na trayaḥ
10. Himālaya, the ocean, and even Indra himself - the wielder of the thunderbolt and vanquisher of Bala - though they may resort to their full strength, these three would not be able to protect anyone assailed by me.
युध्येयं क्षत्रियान्सर्वान्पाण्डवेष्वाततायिनः ।
अधः पादतलेनैतानधिष्ठास्यामि भूतले ॥११॥
11. yudhyeyaṁ kṣatriyānsarvānpāṇḍaveṣvātatāyinaḥ ,
adhaḥ pādatalenaitānadhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale.
11. yudhyeyam kṣatriyān sarvān pāṇḍaveṣu ātatāyinaḥ
adhaḥ pādatalena etān adhiṣṭhāsyāmi bhūtale
11. I would fight all the Kṣatriyas who are aggressors against the Pāṇḍavas. I will trample these (aggressors) under the sole of my foot on the ground.
न हि त्वं नाभिजानासि मम विक्रममच्युत ।
यथा मया विनिर्जित्य राजानो वशगाः कृताः ॥१२॥
12. na hi tvaṁ nābhijānāsi mama vikramamacyuta ,
yathā mayā vinirjitya rājāno vaśagāḥ kṛtāḥ.
12. na hi tvam na abhijānāsi mama vikramam acyuta
yathā mayā vinirjitya rājānaḥ vaśagāḥ kṛtāḥ
12. Indeed, O Acyuta (acyuta), you do not know my valor, or how I completely conquered kings and made them subservient.
अथ चेन्मां न जानासि सूर्यस्येवोद्यतः प्रभाम् ।
विगाढे युधि संबाधे वेत्स्यसे मां जनार्दन ॥१३॥
13. atha cenmāṁ na jānāsi sūryasyevodyataḥ prabhām ,
vigāḍhe yudhi saṁbādhe vetsyase māṁ janārdana.
13. atha cet mām na jānāsi sūryasya iva udyataḥ prabhām
vigāḍhe yudhi saṃbādhe vetsyase mām janārdana
13. Now, if you do not know me, who am like the splendor of the risen sun, then, O Janārdana (janārdana), you will understand me in the midst of a fierce and crowded battle.
किं मात्यवाक्षीः परुषैर्व्रणं सूच्या इवानघ ।
यथामति ब्रवीम्येतद्विद्धि मामधिकं ततः ॥१४॥
14. kiṁ mātyavākṣīḥ paruṣairvraṇaṁ sūcyā ivānagha ,
yathāmati bravīmyetadviddhi māmadhikaṁ tataḥ.
14. kim mām atyavākṣīḥ paruṣaiḥ vraṇam sūcyā iva anagha
yathāmati bravīmi etat viddhi mām adhikam tataḥ
14. O sinless one (anagha), why have you rebuked me with harsh words, like probing a wound with a needle? I speak this according to my understanding; know that I am greater than that (perception of me).
द्रष्टासि युधि संबाधे प्रवृत्ते वैशसेऽहनि ।
मया प्रणुन्नान्मातङ्गान्रथिनः सादिनस्तथा ॥१५॥
15. draṣṭāsi yudhi saṁbādhe pravṛtte vaiśase'hani ,
mayā praṇunnānmātaṅgānrathinaḥ sādinastathā.
15. dṛaṣṭā asi yudhi saṃbādhe pravṛtte vaiśase ahani
mayā praṇunnān mātaṅgān rathinaḥ sādinaḥ tathā
15. You will see, in the narrow confines of battle, on the day when the great slaughter has begun, elephants, charioteers, and horsemen driven forward by me.
तथा नरानभिक्रुद्धं निघ्नन्तं क्षत्रियर्षभान् ।
द्रष्टा मां त्वं च लोकश्च विकर्षन्तं वरान्वरान् ॥१६॥
16. tathā narānabhikruddhaṁ nighnantaṁ kṣatriyarṣabhān ,
draṣṭā māṁ tvaṁ ca lokaśca vikarṣantaṁ varānvarān.
16. tathā narān abhikruddham nighnantam kṣatriya ṛṣabhān
dṛaṣṭā mām tvam ca lokaḥ ca vikarṣantam varān varān
16. You, and the world, will also see me enraged, slaying the foremost of warriors, and dragging away the best of the best.
न मे सीदन्ति मज्जानो न ममोद्वेपते मनः ।
सर्वलोकादभिक्रुद्धान्न भयं विद्यते मम ॥१७॥
17. na me sīdanti majjāno na mamodvepate manaḥ ,
sarvalokādabhikruddhānna bhayaṁ vidyate mama.
17. na me sīdanti majjānaḥ na mama udvepate manaḥ
sarvalokāt abhikruddhāt na bhayam vidyate mama
17. My marrow does not sink, nor does my mind tremble. I have no fear even from all the worlds if they were enraged.
किं तु सौहृदमेवैतत्कृपया मधुसूदन ।
सर्वांस्तितिक्षे संक्लेशान्मा स्म नो भरता नशन् ॥१८॥
18. kiṁ tu sauhṛdamevaitatkṛpayā madhusūdana ,
sarvāṁstitikṣe saṁkleśānmā sma no bharatā naśan.
18. kim tu sauhṛdam eva etat kṛpayā madhusūdana
sarvān titikṣe saṃkleśān mā sma naḥ bharatā naśan
18. But, O Destroyer of Madhu (Madhusūdana), this is just friendship. Out of compassion, I will endure all distresses, so that the descendants of Bharata may not perish.
