स्वेन च्छन्देन नः सर्वान्नावधीद्व्यक्तमर्जुनः ।
न ह्यस्य समरे मुच्येतान्तकोऽप्याततायिनः ॥१॥

svena cchandena naḥ sarvānnāvadhīdvyaktamarjunaḥ ,
na hyasya samare mucyetāntako'pyātatāyinaḥ.

1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Surely, Arjuna did not kill all of us by his own free will. For in battle, even Death (antaka) himself, if he were an aggressor, would not escape Arjuna."
पार्थो ह्येकोऽहरद्भद्रामेकश्चाग्निमतर्पयत् ।
एकश्चेमां महीं जित्वा चक्रे बलिभृतो नृपान् ॥२॥
2. pārtho hyeko'haradbhadrāmekaścāgnimatarpayat ,
ekaścemāṁ mahīṁ jitvā cakre balibhṛto nṛpān.

2. For Pārtha (Arjuna) alone brought prosperity, and he alone satisfied Agni (the fire-god); and alone, having conquered this earth, he made kings into tribute-bearers.
एको निवातकवचानवधीद्दिव्यकार्मुकः ।
एकः किरातरूपेण स्थितं शर्वमयोधयत् ॥३॥
3. eko nivātakavacānavadhīddivyakārmukaḥ ,
ekaḥ kirātarūpeṇa sthitaṁ śarvamayodhayat.

ekaḥ kirātarūpeṇa sthitam śarvam ayodhayat

3. Alone, possessing a divine bow, he killed the Nivātakavacas (a race of powerful demons); and alone, he fought with Śarva (Śiva), who was present in the guise of a Kirāta (a mountain tribesman).
एकोऽभ्यरक्षद्भरतानेको भवमतोषयत् ।
तेनैकेन जिताः सर्वे मदीया उग्रतेजसः ।
ते न निन्द्याः प्रशस्याश्च यत्ते चक्रुर्ब्रवीहि तत् ॥४॥
4. eko'bhyarakṣadbharatāneko bhavamatoṣayat ,
tenaikena jitāḥ sarve madīyā ugratejasaḥ ,
te na nindyāḥ praśasyāśca yatte cakrurbravīhi tat.

atoṣayat tena ekena jitāḥ sarve

4. One individual protected the Bhāratas, and one individual pleased Bhava (Śiva). By that one individual, all my fierce-spirited warriors were conquered. Those warriors of mine are not to be blamed, but rather praised. Please tell me what action they performed.
संजय उवाच ।
हतप्रहतविध्वस्ता विवर्मायुधवाहनाः ।
दीनस्वरा दूयमाना मानिनः शत्रुभिर्जिताः ॥५॥
5. saṁjaya uvāca ,
hataprahatavidhvastā vivarmāyudhavāhanāḥ ,
dīnasvarā dūyamānā māninaḥ śatrubhirjitāḥ.
5. saṃjayaḥ uvāca hata-prahata-vidhvastāḥ vivarma-āyudha-vāhanāḥ
dīna-svarāḥ dūyamānāḥ māninaḥ śatrubhiḥ jitāḥ

5. Sañjaya said: [They were] struck, wounded, and shattered, stripped of their armor, weapons, and vehicles. Though proud, they were conquered by their enemies, their voices sorrowful and their hearts grieving.
शिबिरस्थाः पुनर्मन्त्रं मन्त्रयन्ति स्म कौरवाः ।
भग्नदंष्ट्रा हतविषाः पदाक्रान्ता इवोरगाः ॥६॥
6. śibirasthāḥ punarmantraṁ mantrayanti sma kauravāḥ ,
bhagnadaṁṣṭrā hataviṣāḥ padākrāntā ivoragāḥ.
6. śibirasthāḥ punaḥ mantram mantrayanti sma kauravāḥ
bhagna-daṃṣṭrāḥ hata-viṣāḥ pada-ākrāntāḥ iva uragāḥ

6. The Kauravas, situated in their camp, deliberated a plan again. They were like snakes with broken fangs and destroyed venom, trampled underfoot.
तानब्रवीत्ततः कर्णः क्रुद्धः सर्प इव श्वसन् ।
करं करेणाभिपीड्य प्रेक्षमाणस्तवात्मजम् ॥७॥
7. tānabravīttataḥ karṇaḥ kruddhaḥ sarpa iva śvasan ,
karaṁ kareṇābhipīḍya prekṣamāṇastavātmajam.
7. tān abravīt tataḥ karṇaḥ kruddhaḥ sarpaḥ iva śvasan
karam kareṇa abhipīḍya prekṣamāṇaḥ tava ātmajam
7. tataḥ kruddhaḥ sarpaḥ iva śvasan karṇaḥ karam kareṇa
abhipīḍya tava ātmajam prekṣamāṇaḥ tān abravīt
7. Then, Karṇa, enraged and hissing like a snake, pressed his hand with [the other] hand, and said to them, while looking at your son (Duryodhana).
यत्तो दृढश्च दक्षश्च धृतिमानर्जुनः सदा ।
स बोधयति चाप्येनं प्राप्तकालमधोक्षजः ॥८॥
8. yatto dṛḍhaśca dakṣaśca dhṛtimānarjunaḥ sadā ,
sa bodhayati cāpyenaṁ prāptakālamadhokṣajaḥ.
8. yattaḥ dṛḍhaḥ ca dakṣaḥ ca dhṛtimān arjunaḥ sadā
saḥ bodhayati ca api enam prāptakālam adhokṣajaḥ
8. arjunaḥ sadā yattaḥ ca dṛḍhaḥ ca dakṣaḥ ca dhṛtimān
saḥ adhokṣajaḥ ca api enam prāptakālam bodhayati
8. Arjuna is always diligent, firm, skillful, and resolute. And Adhokṣaja (Krishna) enlightens him at the appropriate time.
सहसास्त्रविसर्गेण वयं तेनाद्य वञ्चिताः ।
श्वस्त्वहं तस्य संकल्पं सर्वं हन्ता महीपते ॥९॥
9. sahasāstravisargeṇa vayaṁ tenādya vañcitāḥ ,
śvastvahaṁ tasya saṁkalpaṁ sarvaṁ hantā mahīpate.
9. sahasā astra visargeṇa vayam tena adya vañcitāḥ
śvas tu aham tasya saṃkalpam sarvam hantā mahīpate
9. mahīpate vayam adya tena sahasā astra visargeṇa
vañcitāḥ tu śvas aham tasya sarvam saṃkalpam hantā
9. By that sudden discharge of weapons, we were deceived today. But tomorrow, O king, I will destroy all his resolve.
एवमुक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा सोऽनुजज्ञे नृपोत्तमान् ।
सुखोषितास्ते रजनीं हृष्टा युद्धाय निर्ययुः ॥१०॥
10. evamuktastathetyuktvā so'nujajñe nṛpottamān ,
sukhoṣitāste rajanīṁ hṛṣṭā yuddhāya niryayuḥ.
10. evam uktaḥ tathā iti uktvā saḥ anujajñe nṛpottamān
sukha uṣitāḥ te rajanīm hṛṣṭāḥ yuddhāya niryayuḥ
10. evam uktaḥ saḥ tathā iti uktvā nṛpottamān anujajñe
te sukha uṣitāḥ rajanīm hṛṣṭāḥ yuddhāya niryayuḥ
10. Having been addressed thus, he said 'So be it' and then permitted the best of kings. Having comfortably spent the night, they joyfully set out for battle.
तेऽपश्यन्विहितं व्यूहं धर्मराजेन दुर्जयम् ।
प्रयत्नात्कुरुमुख्येन बृहस्पत्युशनोमतात् ॥११॥
11. te'paśyanvihitaṁ vyūhaṁ dharmarājena durjayam ,
prayatnātkurumukhyena bṛhaspatyuśanomatāt.
11. te apaśyan vihitam vyūham dharmarājena durjayam
prayatnāt kurumukhyena bṛhaspaty-uśanomatāt
11. te kurumukhyena dharmarājena bṛhaspaty-uśanomatāt
prayatnāt vihitam durjayam vyūham apaśyan
11. They saw the battle array, impossible to conquer, which was carefully arranged by King Yudhiṣṭhira (dharma-rāja), the chief among the Kurus, whose strategy was like that of Bṛhaspati and Uśanas (Śukra).
अथ प्रतीपकर्तारं सततं विजितात्मनाम् ।
सस्मार वृषभस्कन्धं कर्णं दुर्योधनस्तदा ॥१२॥
12. atha pratīpakartāraṁ satataṁ vijitātmanām ,
sasmāra vṛṣabhaskandhaṁ karṇaṁ duryodhanastadā.
12. atha pratīpakartāram satatam vijitātmanām
sasmāra vṛṣabhaskandham karṇam duryodhanaḥ tadā
12. tadā duryodhanaḥ vṛṣabhaskandham satatam
vijitātmanām pratīpakartāram karṇam sasmāra atha
12. Then Duryodhana remembered Karna, whose shoulders were like those of a bull and who was constantly able to counteract even those who had mastered their inner self (ātman).
पुरंदरसमं युद्धे मरुद्गणसमं बले ।
कार्तवीर्यसमं वीर्ये कर्णं राज्ञोऽगमन्मनः ।
सूतपुत्रं महेष्वासं बन्धुमात्ययिकेष्विव ॥१३॥
13. puraṁdarasamaṁ yuddhe marudgaṇasamaṁ bale ,
kārtavīryasamaṁ vīrye karṇaṁ rājño'gamanmanaḥ ,
sūtaputraṁ maheṣvāsaṁ bandhumātyayikeṣviva.
13. purandarasamam yuddhe marudgaṇasamam
bale kārtavīryasamam vīrye
karṇam rājñaḥ agamat manaḥ sūtaputram
maheṣvāsam bandhum ātyayikeṣu iva
13. rājñaḥ manaḥ yuddhe purandarasamam
bale marudgaṇasamam vīrye
kārtavīryasamam sūtaputram maheṣvāsam
karṇam ātyayikeṣu bandhum iva agamat
13. The king's mind turned to Karna, the great archer, son of a charioteer, who was like Purandara (Indra) in battle, like the host of Maruts in strength, and like Kārtavīrya in prowess, just as one's mind turns to a kinsman in emergencies.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
यद्वोऽगमन्मनो मन्दाः कर्णं वैकर्तनं तदा ।
अप्यद्राक्षत तं यूयं शीतार्ता इव भास्करम् ॥१४॥
14. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
yadvo'gamanmano mandāḥ karṇaṁ vaikartanaṁ tadā ,
apyadrākṣata taṁ yūyaṁ śītārtā iva bhāskaram.
14. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca yat vaḥ agamat manaḥ mandāḥ karṇam
vaikartanam tadā api adrākṣata tam yūyam śītārtāḥ iva bhāskaram
14. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca mandāḥ yat tadā vaḥ manaḥ vaikartanam
karṇam agamat api yūyam tam śītārtāḥ bhāskaram iva adrākṣata
14. Dhritarashtra said: "O foolish ones, since your minds then turned to Karna, the son of Vikartana, did you actually see him, just as those suffering from cold see the sun?"
कृतेऽवहारे सैन्यानां प्रवृत्ते च रणे पुनः ।
कथं वैकर्तनः कर्णस्तत्रायुध्यत संजय ।
कथं च पाण्डवाः सर्वे युयुधुस्तत्र सूतजम् ॥१५॥
15. kṛte'vahāre sainyānāṁ pravṛtte ca raṇe punaḥ ,
kathaṁ vaikartanaḥ karṇastatrāyudhyata saṁjaya ,
kathaṁ ca pāṇḍavāḥ sarve yuyudhustatra sūtajam.
15. kṛte avahāre sainyānām pravṛtte ca
raṇe punaḥ katham vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ
tatra ayudhyata saṃjaya katham ca
pāṇḍavāḥ sarve yuyudhuḥ tatra sūtajam
15. saṃjaya sainyānām avahāre kṛte ca
raṇe punaḥ pravṛtte tatra vaikartanaḥ
karṇaḥ katham ayudhyata ca tatra
sarve pāṇḍavāḥ sūtajam katham yuyudhuḥ
15. Sanjaya, when the armies had withdrawn and the battle had begun again, how did Karna, the son of Vikartana, fight there? And how did all the Pandavas fight against the charioteer's son (Karna) there?
कर्णो ह्येको महाबाहुर्हन्यात्पार्थान्ससोमकान् ।
कर्णस्य भुजयोर्वीर्यं शक्रविष्णुसमं मतम् ।
तथास्त्राणि सुघोराणि विक्रमश्च महात्मनः ॥१६॥
16. karṇo hyeko mahābāhurhanyātpārthānsasomakān ,
karṇasya bhujayorvīryaṁ śakraviṣṇusamaṁ matam ,
tathāstrāṇi sughorāṇi vikramaśca mahātmanaḥ.
16. karṇaḥ hi ekaḥ mahābāhuḥ hanyāt pārthān
sasomakān | karṇasya bhujayoḥ
vīryaṃ śakraviṣṇusamaṃ matam | tathā
astrāṇi sughorāṇi vikramaḥ ca mahātmanaḥ
16. hi mahābāhuḥ ekaḥ karṇaḥ sasomakān
pārthān hanyāt karṇasya bhujayoḥ
vīryaṃ śakraviṣṇusamaṃ matam tathā
mahātmanaḥ sughorāṇi astrāṇi ca vikramaḥ
16. Indeed, the mighty-armed Karna alone could slay the sons of Pṛthā (Pandavas) along with the Somakas. The power of Karna's arms is considered equal to that of Indra and Vishnu. Furthermore, his exceedingly dreadful weapons and the prowess of that great soul (mahātman) are also formidable.
दुर्योधनं तदा दृष्ट्वा पाण्डवेन भृशार्दितम् ।
पराक्रान्तान्पाण्डुसुतान्दृष्ट्वा चापि महाहवे ॥१७॥
17. duryodhanaṁ tadā dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena bhṛśārditam ,
parākrāntānpāṇḍusutāndṛṣṭvā cāpi mahāhave.
17. duryodhanaṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā pāṇḍavena bhṛśārditam
| parākrāntān pāṇḍusutān dṛṣṭvā ca api mahāhave
17. tadā pāṇḍavena bhṛśārditam duryodhanaṃ dṛṣṭvā
ca api mahāhave parākrāntān pāṇḍusutān dṛṣṭvā
17. Having then seen Duryodhana greatly distressed by the Pandavas, and having also witnessed the valiant sons of Pandu (pāṇḍusutān) in the great battle (mahāhave)...
कर्णमाश्रित्य संग्रामे दर्पो दुर्योधने पुनः ।
जेतुमुत्सहते पार्थान्सपुत्रान्सहकेशवान् ॥१८॥
18. karṇamāśritya saṁgrāme darpo duryodhane punaḥ ,
jetumutsahate pārthānsaputrānsahakeśavān.
18. karṇaṃ āśritya saṃgrāme darpaḥ duryodhane punaḥ
| jetum utsahate pārthān saputrān sahakeśavān
18. saṃgrāme karṇaṃ āśritya punaḥ duryodhane darpaḥ

18. Relying on Karna in battle, Duryodhana's pride (darpa) again endeavors to conquer the Pandavas, along with their sons and Krishna (Keśava).
अहो बत महद्दुःखं यत्र पाण्डुसुतान्रणे ।
नातरद्रभसः कर्णो दैवं नूनं परायणम् ।
अहो द्यूतस्य निष्ठेयं घोरा संप्रति वर्तते ॥१९॥
19. aho bata mahadduḥkhaṁ yatra pāṇḍusutānraṇe ,
nātaradrabhasaḥ karṇo daivaṁ nūnaṁ parāyaṇam ,
aho dyūtasya niṣṭheyaṁ ghorā saṁprati vartate.
19. aho bata mahat duḥkhaṃ yatra pāṇḍusutān
raṇe | na atarat rabhasaḥ karṇaḥ
daivaṃ nūnaṃ parāyaṇam | aho dyūtasya
niṣṭhā iyaṃ ghorā saṃprati vartate
19. aho bata mahat duḥkhaṃ yatra raṇe
rabhasaḥ karṇaḥ pāṇḍusutān na atarat
nūnaṃ daivaṃ parāyaṇam aho dyūtasya
ghorā iyaṃ niṣṭhā saṃprati vartate
19. Alas, what great sorrow! For the impetuous Karna could not vanquish the sons of Pandu (pāṇḍusutān) in battle. Surely, fate (daiva) is the ultimate recourse. Alas, this dreadful consequence of gambling (dyūta) now prevails.
अहो दुःखानि तीव्राणि दुर्योधनकृतान्यहम् ।
सहिष्यामि सुघोराणि शल्यभूतानि संजय ॥२०॥
20. aho duḥkhāni tīvrāṇi duryodhanakṛtānyaham ,
sahiṣyāmi sughorāṇi śalyabhūtāni saṁjaya.
20. aho duḥkhāni tīvrāṇi duryodhanakṛtāni aham
sahiṣyāmi sughorāṇi śalyabhūtāni saṃjaya
20. saṃjaya aho aham duryodhanakṛtāni tīvrāṇi
sughorāṇi śalyabhūtāni duḥkhāni sahiṣyāmi
20. Oh, Sañjaya, I shall endure these terrible, excruciating sorrows, which are like piercing darts, all caused by Duryodhana.
सौबलं च तथा तात
नीतिमानिति मन्यते ॥२१॥
21. saubalaṁ ca tathā tāta
nītimāniti manyate.
21. saubalam ca tathā tāta
nītimān iti manyate
21. tāta ca tathā saubalam
nītimān iti manyate
21. And similarly, dear father, he considers the son of Subala (Śakuni) to be a man of policy.
युद्धेषु नाम दिव्येषु वर्तमानेषु संजय ।
अश्रौषं निहतान्पुत्रान्नित्यमेव च निर्जितान् ॥२२॥
22. yuddheṣu nāma divyeṣu vartamāneṣu saṁjaya ,
aśrauṣaṁ nihatānputrānnityameva ca nirjitān.
22. yuddheṣu nāma divyeṣu vartamāneṣu saṃjaya
aśrauṣam nihatān putrān nityam eva ca nirjitān
22. saṃjaya yuddheṣu nāma divyeṣu vartamāneṣu (aham)
nihatān putrān ca nityam eva nirjitān aśrauṣam
22. Sañjaya, in the ongoing, indeed divine, battles, I heard that my sons were slain and constantly defeated.
न पाण्डवानां समरे कश्चिदस्ति निवारकः ।
स्त्रीमध्यमिव गाहन्ति दैवं हि बलवत्तरम् ॥२३॥
23. na pāṇḍavānāṁ samare kaścidasti nivārakaḥ ,
strīmadhyamiva gāhanti daivaṁ hi balavattaram.
23. na pāṇḍavānām samare kaścid asti nivārakaḥ
strīmadhyam iva gāhanti daivam hi balavattaram
23. samare pāṇḍavānām kaścid nivārakaḥ na asti.
(te) strīmadhyam iva gāhanti,
hi daivam balavattaram (asti)
23. There is no one who can stop the Pāṇḍavas in battle. They advance as easily as entering among women, for fate is indeed more powerful.
संजय उवाच ।
अतिक्रान्तं हि यत्कार्यं पश्चाच्चिन्तयतीति च ।
तच्चास्य न भवेत्कार्यं चिन्तया च विनश्यति ॥२४॥
24. saṁjaya uvāca ,
atikrāntaṁ hi yatkāryaṁ paścāccintayatīti ca ,
taccāsya na bhavetkāryaṁ cintayā ca vinaśyati.
24. sañjayaḥ uvāca | atikrāntam hi yat kāryam paścāt cintayati
iti ca | tat ca asya na bhavet kāryam cintayā ca vinaśyati
24. sañjayaḥ uvāca yat atikrāntam kāryam hi paścāt iti ca cintayati,
tat ca asya kāryam na bhavet,
cintayā ca vinaśyati
24. Sañjaya said: Indeed, any action that has already transpired, and which one subsequently ponders over, will not bear fruit for that person; moreover, it is destroyed by such contemplation.
तदिदं तव कार्यं तु दूरप्राप्तं विजानता ।
न कृतं यत्त्वया पूर्वं प्राप्ताप्राप्तविचारणे ॥२५॥
25. tadidaṁ tava kāryaṁ tu dūraprāptaṁ vijānatā ,
na kṛtaṁ yattvayā pūrvaṁ prāptāprāptavicāraṇe.
25. tat idam tava kāryam tu dūraprāptam vijānatā |
na kṛtam yat tvayā pūrvam prāptāprāptavicāraṇe
25. idam tat tava kāryam tu dūraprāptam (asti),
yat pūrvam vijānatā tvayā prāptāprāptavicāraṇe na kṛtam.
25. This task of yours, which has now reached its culmination, was not properly executed by you previously, even though you were aware of it and had to consider what was achievable and what was not.
उक्तोऽसि बहुधा राजन्मा युध्यस्वेति पाण्डवैः ।
गृह्णीषे न च तन्मोहात्पाण्डवेषु विशां पते ॥२६॥
26. ukto'si bahudhā rājanmā yudhyasveti pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
gṛhṇīṣe na ca tanmohātpāṇḍaveṣu viśāṁ pate.
26. uktaḥ asi bahudhā rājan mā yudhyasva iti pāṇḍavaiḥ
| gṛhṇīṣe na ca tat mohāt pāṇḍaveṣu viśām pate
26. rājan! pāṇḍavaiḥ bahudhā (tvam) mā yudhyasva iti uktaḥ asi.
(kintu) he viśām pate! mohāt tvām pāṇḍaveṣu tat na ca gṛhṇīṣe.
26. O King, you have been repeatedly advised by the Pāṇḍavas, "Do not wage war!" Yet, O lord of the people, you do not heed this advice regarding the Pāṇḍavas, due to delusion (moha).
त्वया पापानि घोराणि समाचीर्णानि पाण्डुषु ।
त्वत्कृते वर्तते घोरः पार्थिवानां जनक्षयः ॥२७॥
27. tvayā pāpāni ghorāṇi samācīrṇāni pāṇḍuṣu ,
tvatkṛte vartate ghoraḥ pārthivānāṁ janakṣayaḥ.
27. tvayā pāpāni ghorāṇi samācīrṇāni pāṇḍuṣu |
tvatkṛte vartate ghoraḥ pārthivānām janakṣayaḥ
27. tvayā pāṇḍuṣu ghorāṇi pāpāni samācīrṇāni.
tvatkṛte ghoraḥ pārthivānām janakṣayaḥ vartate.
27. You have committed terrible sins against the Pāṇḍavas. It is because of you that a dreadful destruction of kings (pārthivānām) is occurring.
तत्त्विदानीमतिक्रम्य मा शुचो भरतर्षभ ।
शृणु सर्वं यथावृत्तं घोरं वैशसमच्युत ॥२८॥
28. tattvidānīmatikramya mā śuco bharatarṣabha ,
śṛṇu sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaṁ ghoraṁ vaiśasamacyuta.
28. tat tu idānīm atikramya mā śucaḥ bharatarṣabha
śṛṇu sarvam yathāvṛttam ghoram vaiśasam acyuta
28. bharatarṣabha acyuta tat tu idānīm atikramya mā
śucaḥ sarvam yathāvṛttam ghoram vaiśasam śṛṇu
28. Now, putting that aside, do not grieve, O best of the Bharatas. Listen, O Acyuta, to everything that has transpired, this terrible slaughter.
प्रभातायां रजन्यां तु कर्णो राजानमभ्ययात् ।
समेत्य च महाबाहुर्दुर्योधनमभाषत ॥२९॥
29. prabhātāyāṁ rajanyāṁ tu karṇo rājānamabhyayāt ,
sametya ca mahābāhurduryodhanamabhāṣata.
29. prabhātāyām rajanyām tu karṇaḥ rājānam abhyayāt
sametya ca mahābāhuḥ duryodhanam abhāṣata

29. But when the night dawned, Karṇa approached the king. And having met [him], the mighty-armed one (Karṇa) spoke to Duryodhana.
अद्य राजन्समेष्यामि पाण्डवेन यशस्विना ।
हनिष्यामि च तं वीरं स वा मां निहनिष्यति ॥३०॥
30. adya rājansameṣyāmi pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā ,
haniṣyāmi ca taṁ vīraṁ sa vā māṁ nihaniṣyati.
30. adya rājan sameṣyāmi pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā
haniṣyāmi ca tam vīram sa vā mām nihaniṣyati

30. Today, O king, I shall confront the glorious Pāṇḍava. I shall either slay that hero, or he will slay me.
बहुत्वान्मम कार्याणां तथा पार्थस्य पार्थिव ।
नाभूत्समागमो राजन्मम चैवार्जुनस्य च ॥३१॥
31. bahutvānmama kāryāṇāṁ tathā pārthasya pārthiva ,
nābhūtsamāgamo rājanmama caivārjunasya ca.
31. bahutvāt mama kāryāṇām tathā pārthasya pārthiva
na abhūt samāgamaḥ rājan mama ca eva arjunasya ca
31. pārthiva rājan mama kāryāṇām bahutvāt tathā

31. O ruler of the earth, O king, due to the multitude of my duties, and similarly Pārtha's (Arjuna's), there has been no encounter between me and Arjuna.
इदं तु मे यथाप्रज्ञं शृणु वाक्यं विशां पते ।
अनिहत्य रणे पार्थं नाहमेष्यामि भारत ॥३२॥
32. idaṁ tu me yathāprajñaṁ śṛṇu vākyaṁ viśāṁ pate ,
anihatya raṇe pārthaṁ nāhameṣyāmi bhārata.
32. idam tu me yathāprajñam śṛṇu vākyam viśām pate
| anihatya raṇe pārtham na aham eṣyāmi bhārata
32. O viśām pate,
O bhārata,
me yathāprajñam idam vākyam tu śṛṇu aham raṇe pārtham anihatya na eṣyāmi
32. O lord of the people (viśām pate), O Bhārata, hear this statement of mine, made to the best of my understanding. I shall not return without having killed Pārtha in battle.
हतप्रवीरे सैन्येऽस्मिन्मयि चैव स्थिते युधि ।
अभियास्यति मां पार्थः शक्रशक्त्या विनाकृतम् ॥३३॥
33. hatapravīre sainye'sminmayi caiva sthite yudhi ,
abhiyāsyati māṁ pārthaḥ śakraśaktyā vinākṛtam.
33. hatapravīre sainye asmin mayi ca eva sthite yudhi
| abhiyāsyati mām pārthaḥ śakraśaktyā vinākṛtam
33. asmin hatapravīre sainye ca mayi eva yudhi sthite (sati),
pārthaḥ śakraśaktyā vinākṛtam mām abhiyāsyati
33. While this army (sainya), whose chief warriors have been slain, and I myself am stationed in battle (yudhi), Pārtha will attack me, who am deprived of Śakra's power (śakti).
ततः श्रेयस्करं यत्ते तन्निबोध जनेश्वर ।
आयुधानां च यद्वीर्यं द्रव्याणामर्जुनस्य च ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ śreyaskaraṁ yatte tannibodha janeśvara ,
āyudhānāṁ ca yadvīryaṁ dravyāṇāmarjunasya ca.
34. tataḥ śreyaskaram yat te tat nibodha janeśvara
| āyudhānām ca yat vīryam dravyāṇām arjunasya ca
34. O janeśvara,
tataḥ,
yat te śreyaskaram (asti) tat nibodha ca āyudhānām,
ca dravyāṇām,
ca arjunasya yat vīryam (asti) (tat api) nibodha
34. Therefore, O lord of people (janeśvara), understand what is beneficial for you, and also the prowess (vīrya) of the weapons, of the substances, and of Arjuna.
कायस्य महतो भेदे लाघवे दूरपातने ।
सौष्ठवे चास्त्रयोगे च सव्यसाची न मत्समः ॥३५॥
35. kāyasya mahato bhede lāghave dūrapātane ,
sauṣṭhave cāstrayoge ca savyasācī na matsamaḥ.

35. In piercing a mighty body, in agility, in long-range shooting, and in the skillful application of weapons (astra), Savyasācī (Arjuna) is not my equal.
सर्वायुधमहामात्रं विजयं नाम तद्धनुः ।
इन्द्रार्थमभिकामेन निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा ॥३६॥
36. sarvāyudhamahāmātraṁ vijayaṁ nāma taddhanuḥ ,
indrārthamabhikāmena nirmitaṁ viśvakarmaṇā.

indra-artham abhikāmena nirmitam viśvakarmaṇā
36. tat dhanuḥ nāma vijayam,

36. That bow, named Vijaya, which is a master among all weapons, was fashioned by Viśvakarmā for Indra's sake, as he ardently desired it.
येन दैत्यगणान्राजञ्जितवान्वै शतक्रतुः ।
यस्य घोषेण दैत्यानां विमुह्यन्ति दिशो दश ।
तद्भार्गवाय प्रायच्छच्छक्रः परमसंमतम् ॥३७॥
37. yena daityagaṇānrājañjitavānvai śatakratuḥ ,
yasya ghoṣeṇa daityānāṁ vimuhyanti diśo daśa ,
tadbhārgavāya prāyacchacchakraḥ paramasaṁmatam.
37. yena daityagaṇān rājan jitavān vai
śatakratuḥ yasya ghoṣeṇa daityānām

37. O king, by which bow Indra (śatakratuḥ) indeed conquered the hosts of demons; and by whose roar the ten directions become utterly bewildered for the demons. That exceedingly revered (bow), Indra (śakraḥ) gave to Bhārgava.
तद्दिव्यं भार्गवो मह्यमददाद्धनुरुत्तमम् ।
येन योत्स्ये महाबाहुमर्जुनं जयतां वरम् ।
यथेन्द्रः समरे सर्वान्दैतेयान्वै समागतान् ॥३८॥
38. taddivyaṁ bhārgavo mahyamadadāddhanuruttamam ,
yena yotsye mahābāhumarjunaṁ jayatāṁ varam ,
yathendraḥ samare sarvāndaiteyānvai samāgatān.
38. tat divyam bhārgavaḥ mahyam adadāt
dhanuḥ uttamam yena yotsye mahābāhum
arjunam jayatām varam yathā indraḥ
samare sarvān daiteyān vai samāgatān
38. bhārgavaḥ mahyam tat divyam uttamam dhanuḥ adadāt,
yena (dhanuṣā) aham mahābāhum arjunam,
jayatām varam,
yotsye; yathā indraḥ samare vai sarvān samāgatān daiteyān (ayotsyata).
38. Bhārgava gave me that divine, excellent bow. With it, I will fight the mighty-armed Arjuna, the best among conquerors, just as Indra in battle indeed fought all the assembled demons (daiteya).
धनुर्घोरं रामदत्तं गाण्डीवात्तद्विशिष्यते ।
त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी धनुषा तेन निर्जिता ॥३९॥
39. dhanurghoraṁ rāmadattaṁ gāṇḍīvāttadviśiṣyate ,
triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī dhanuṣā tena nirjitā.
39. dhanuḥ ghoram rāmadattam gāṇḍīvāt tat viśiṣyate
triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī dhanuṣā tena nirjitā
39. rāmadattam ghoram dhanuḥ tat gāṇḍīvāt viśiṣyate.
tena dhanuṣā pṛthivī triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ nirjitā (āsīt).
39. This formidable bow, given by Rāma, is superior to Gāṇḍīva. By that bow, the earth was conquered twenty-one times.
धनुषो यस्य कर्माणि दिव्यानि प्राह भार्गवः ।
तद्रामो ह्यददान्मह्यं येन योत्स्यामि पाण्डवम् ॥४०॥
40. dhanuṣo yasya karmāṇi divyāni prāha bhārgavaḥ ,
tadrāmo hyadadānmahyaṁ yena yotsyāmi pāṇḍavam.
40. dhanuṣaḥ yasya karmāṇi divyāni prāha bhārgavaḥ
tat rāmaḥ hi adadāt mahyam yena yotsyāmi pāṇḍavam

40. Bhargava indeed spoke of the divine deeds (karma) of this bow. Rama then gave that very bow to me, with which I will fight the Pandava (Arjuna).
अद्य दुर्योधनाहं त्वां नन्दयिष्ये सबान्धवम् ।
निहत्य समरे वीरमर्जुनं जयतां वरम् ॥४१॥
41. adya duryodhanāhaṁ tvāṁ nandayiṣye sabāndhavam ,
nihatya samare vīramarjunaṁ jayatāṁ varam.
41. adya duryodhana aham tvām nandayṣye sabāndhavam
nihatya samare vīram arjunam jayatām varam
41. adya duryodhana aham tvām sabāndhavam nandayṣye

41. Today, O Duryodhana, I will delight you and your relatives by slaying in battle the heroic Arjuna, who is the best among conquerors.
सपर्वतवनद्वीपा हतद्विड्भूः ससागरा ।
पुत्रपौत्रप्रतिष्ठा ते भविष्यत्यद्य पार्थिव ॥४२॥
42. saparvatavanadvīpā hatadviḍbhūḥ sasāgarā ,
putrapautrapratiṣṭhā te bhaviṣyatyadya pārthiva.

putrapautrapratiṣṭhā te bhaviṣyati adya pārthiva

42. O king, today, the earth – with its mountains, forests, islands, and oceans – will be firmly established for your sons and grandsons, with all enemies slain.
नासाध्यं विद्यते मेऽद्य त्वत्प्रियार्थं विशेषतः ।
सम्यग्धर्मानुरक्तस्य सिद्धिरात्मवतो यथा ॥४३॥
43. nāsādhyaṁ vidyate me'dya tvatpriyārthaṁ viśeṣataḥ ,
samyagdharmānuraktasya siddhirātmavato yathā.
43. na asādhyam vidyate me adya tvatpriyārtham viśeṣataḥ
samyak dharmānuraktasya siddhiḥ ātmavataḥ yathā
43. adya tvatpriyārtham viśeṣataḥ me asādhyam na vidyate
yathā samyak dharmānuraktasya ātmavataḥ siddhiḥ
43. Today, nothing is impossible for me, especially for your sake. It will be just like the attainment of success for one who is properly devoted to natural law (dharma) and possesses a spiritual self (ātman).
न हि मां समरे सोढुं स शक्तोऽग्निं तरुर्यथा ।
अवश्यं तु मया वाच्यं येन हीनोऽस्मि फल्गुनात् ॥४४॥
44. na hi māṁ samare soḍhuṁ sa śakto'gniṁ taruryathā ,
avaśyaṁ tu mayā vācyaṁ yena hīno'smi phalgunāt.
44. na hi mām samare soḍhum saḥ śaktaḥ agnim taruḥ yathā
| avaśyam tu mayā vācyam yena hīnaḥ asmi phalgunāt
44. saḥ hi agnim taruḥ yathā mām samare soḍhum na śaktaḥ
tu mayā yena phalgunāt hīnaḥ asmi (tat) avaśyam vācyam
44. Indeed, he (Arjuna) is not capable of enduring me in battle, just as a tree cannot endure fire. However, I must certainly speak of that by which I am inferior to Arjuna (Phalguna).
ज्या तस्य धनुषो दिव्या तथाक्षय्यौ महेषुधी ।
तस्य दिव्यं धनुः श्रेष्ठं गाण्डीवमजरं युधि ॥४५॥
45. jyā tasya dhanuṣo divyā tathākṣayyau maheṣudhī ,
tasya divyaṁ dhanuḥ śreṣṭhaṁ gāṇḍīvamajaraṁ yudhi.
45. jyā tasya dhanuṣaḥ divyā tathā akṣayyau mahā-iṣudhī
| tasya divyam dhanuḥ śreṣṭham gāṇḍīvam ajaram yudhi
45. tasya dhanuṣaḥ jyā divyā,
tathā (tasya) mahā-iṣudhī akṣayyau tasya divyam śreṣṭham gāṇḍīvam dhanuḥ yudhi ajaram
45. The string of his bow is divine, and his two great quivers are inexhaustible. His supreme, divine bow, the Gāṇḍīva, is undecaying in battle.
विजयं च महद्दिव्यं ममापि धनुरुत्तमम् ।
तत्राहमधिकः पार्थाद्धनुषा तेन पार्थिव ॥४६॥
46. vijayaṁ ca mahaddivyaṁ mamāpi dhanuruttamam ,
tatrāhamadhikaḥ pārthāddhanuṣā tena pārthiva.
46. vijayam ca mahat divyam mama api dhanuḥ uttamam |
tatra aham adhikaḥ pārthāt dhanuṣā tena pārthiva
46. ca mama mahat divyam uttamam dhanuḥ api vijayam
pārthiva! tatra tena dhanuṣā aham pārthāt adhikaḥ
46. And my great, divine, excellent bow is also victorious. In that regard, O King (pārthiva), I am superior to Arjuna (Pārtha) with that bow.
मया चाभ्यधिको वीरः पाण्डवस्तन्निबोध मे ।
रश्मिग्राहश्च दाशार्हः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः ॥४७॥
47. mayā cābhyadhiko vīraḥ pāṇḍavastannibodha me ,
raśmigrāhaśca dāśārhaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ.
47. mayā ca abhyadhikaḥ vīraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ tat nibodha me
| raśmi-grāhaḥ ca dāśārhaḥ sarva-loka-namaskṛtaḥ
47. ca mayā abhyadhikaḥ vīraḥ pāṇḍavaḥ (asti) tat me nibodha
ca raśmi-grāhaḥ dāśārhaḥ sarva-loka-namaskṛtaḥ (asti)
47. And a Pāṇḍava hero is indeed vastly superior to me; understand that from me. And there is the Dāśārha (Kṛṣṇa), the charioteer (raśmi-grāha), worshipped by all the worlds.
अग्निदत्तश्च वै दिव्यो रथः काञ्चनभूषणः ।
अच्छेद्यः सर्वतो वीर वाजिनश्च मनोजवाः ।
ध्वजश्च दिव्यो द्युतिमान्वानरो विस्मयंकरः ॥४८॥
48. agnidattaśca vai divyo rathaḥ kāñcanabhūṣaṇaḥ ,
acchedyaḥ sarvato vīra vājinaśca manojavāḥ ,
dhvajaśca divyo dyutimānvānaro vismayaṁkaraḥ.
48. agnidattaḥ ca vai divyaḥ rathaḥ
kāñcanabhūṣaṇaḥ acchedyaḥ sarvataḥ vīra
vājinaḥ ca manojavāḥ dhvajaḥ ca
divyaḥ dyutimān vānaraḥ vismayaṅkaraḥ
48. vīra agnidattaḥ ca kāñcanabhūṣaṇaḥ
acchedyaḥ sarvataḥ vai divyaḥ rathaḥ
manojavāḥ vājinaḥ ca dyutimān
vismayaṅkaraḥ vānaraḥ dhvajaḥ ca divyaḥ
48. And a divine chariot, given by Agni, adorned with gold, impenetrable on all sides, O hero. Its horses are swift as thought, and its divine, radiant banner, bearing a monkey, causes astonishment.
कृष्णश्च स्रष्टा जगतो रथं तमभिरक्षति ।
एभिर्द्रव्यैरहं हीनो योद्धुमिच्छामि पाण्डवम् ॥४९॥
49. kṛṣṇaśca sraṣṭā jagato rathaṁ tamabhirakṣati ,
ebhirdravyairahaṁ hīno yoddhumicchāmi pāṇḍavam.
49. kṛṣṇaḥ ca sraṣṭā jagataḥ ratham tam abhirakṣati
ebhiḥ dravyaiḥ aham hīnaḥ yoddhum icchāmi pāṇḍavam
49. kṛṣṇaḥ ca jagataḥ sraṣṭā tam ratham abhirakṣati
ebhiḥ dravyaiḥ hīnaḥ aham pāṇḍavam yoddhum icchāmi
49. And Kṛṣṇa, the creator of the world, protects that chariot. Even though I am devoid of these resources, I still wish to fight the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna).
अयं तु सदृशो वीरः शल्यः समितिशोभनः ।
सारथ्यं यदि मे कुर्याद्ध्रुवस्ते विजयो भवेत् ॥५०॥
50. ayaṁ tu sadṛśo vīraḥ śalyaḥ samitiśobhanaḥ ,
sārathyaṁ yadi me kuryāddhruvaste vijayo bhavet.
50. ayam tu sadṛśaḥ vīraḥ śalyaḥ samitiśobhanaḥ
sārathyam yadi me kuryāt dhruvaḥ te vijayaḥ bhavet
50. tu ayam vīraḥ samitiśobhanaḥ śalyaḥ sadṛśaḥ yadi
me sārathyam kuryāt te dhruvaḥ vijayaḥ bhavet
50. However, this hero Śalya, who is distinguished in battle, is a suitable match. If he were to act as my charioteer, then your victory would certainly be assured.
तस्य मे सारथिः शल्यो भवत्वसुकरः परैः ।
नाराचान्गार्ध्रपत्रांश्च शकटानि वहन्तु मे ॥५१॥
51. tasya me sārathiḥ śalyo bhavatvasukaraḥ paraiḥ ,
nārācāngārdhrapatrāṁśca śakaṭāni vahantu me.
51. tasya me sārathiḥ śalyaḥ bhavatu asukaraḥ paraiḥ
nārācān gārdhrapatrān ca śakaṭāni vahantu me
51. tasya śalyaḥ paraiḥ asukaraḥ me sārathiḥ bhavatu
ca śakaṭāni me gārdhrapatrān nārācān vahantu
51. Let that Śalya be my charioteer, who is difficult for enemies to overcome. And let wagons carry my iron arrows (nārāca) feathered with vulture plumes.
रथाश्च मुख्या राजेन्द्र युक्ता वाजिभिरुत्तमैः ।
आयान्तु पश्चात्सततं मामेव भरतर्षभ ॥५२॥
52. rathāśca mukhyā rājendra yuktā vājibhiruttamaiḥ ,
āyāntu paścātsatataṁ māmeva bharatarṣabha.
52. rathāḥ ca mukhyāḥ rājendra yuktāḥ vājibhiḥ uttamaiḥ
āyāntu paścāt satatam mām eva bharatarṣabha

52. O king of kings, O best of Bharatas, let the principal chariots, yoked with the best horses, always come behind me.
एवमभ्यधिकः पार्थाद्भविष्यामि गुणैरहम् ।
शल्यो ह्यभ्यधिकः कृष्णादर्जुनादधिको ह्यहम् ॥५३॥
53. evamabhyadhikaḥ pārthādbhaviṣyāmi guṇairaham ,
śalyo hyabhyadhikaḥ kṛṣṇādarjunādadhiko hyaham.
53. evam abhyadhikaḥ pārthāt bhaviṣyāmi guṇaiḥ aham
śalyaḥ hi abhyadhikaḥ kṛṣṇāt arjunāt adhikaḥ hi aham
53. evam aham guṇaiḥ pārthāt abhyadhikaḥ bhaviṣyāmi hi
śalyaḥ kṛṣṇāt abhyadhikaḥ hi aham arjunāt adhikaḥ
53. Thus, I shall be superior to Pārtha (Arjuna) in qualities. Indeed, Śalya is superior to Kṛṣṇa, and I am certainly superior to Arjuna.
यथाश्वहृदयं वेद दाशार्हः परवीरहा ।
तथा शल्योऽपि जानीते हयानां वै महारथः ॥५४॥
54. yathāśvahṛdayaṁ veda dāśārhaḥ paravīrahā ,
tathā śalyo'pi jānīte hayānāṁ vai mahārathaḥ.
54. yathā aśvahṛdayam veda dāśārhaḥ paravīrahā
tathā śalyaḥ api jānīte hayānām vai mahārathaḥ
54. yathā paravīrahā dāśārhaḥ aśvahṛdayam veda
tathā mahārathaḥ śalyaḥ api vai hayānām jānīte
54. Just as Kṛṣṇa (dāśārha), the destroyer of enemy heroes, knows the science of horses, so also Śalya, the great chariot warrior, indeed understands horses.
बाहुवीर्ये समो नास्ति मद्रराजस्य कश्चन ।
तथास्त्रैर्मत्समो नास्ति कश्चिदेव धनुर्धरः ॥५५॥
55. bāhuvīrye samo nāsti madrarājasya kaścana ,
tathāstrairmatsamo nāsti kaścideva dhanurdharaḥ.
55. bāhuvīrye samaḥ na asti madrarājasya kaścana tathā
astraiḥ matsamaḥ na asti kaścit eva dhanurdharaḥ

55. No one is equal to the king of Madras (Śalya) in arm-strength. Similarly, among archers, no one is indeed equal to me in wielding weapons.
तथा शल्यसमो नास्ति हययाने ह कश्चन ।
सोऽयमभ्यधिकः पार्थाद्भविष्यति रथो मम ॥५६॥
56. tathā śalyasamo nāsti hayayāne ha kaścana ,
so'yamabhyadhikaḥ pārthādbhaviṣyati ratho mama.

ayam abhyadhikaḥ pārthāt bhaviṣyati rathaḥ mama
56. tathā hayayāne śalyasamaḥ kaścana na asti saḥ

56. Indeed, there is no one equal to Śalya in driving horses. This very man will be my charioteer, superior even to Pārtha (Arjuna).
एतत्कृतं महाराज त्वयेच्छामि परंतप ।
एवं कृते कृतं मह्यं सर्वकामैर्भविष्यति ॥५७॥
57. etatkṛtaṁ mahārāja tvayecchāmi paraṁtapa ,
evaṁ kṛte kṛtaṁ mahyaṁ sarvakāmairbhaviṣyati.
57. etat kṛtam mahārāja tvayā icchāmi paraṃtapa
evam kṛte kṛtam mahyam sarvakāmaiḥ bhaviṣyati
57. mahārāja paraṃtapa etat kṛtam tvayā icchāmi
evam kṛte mahyam sarvakāmaiḥ kṛtam bhaviṣyati
57. O great king, tormentor of foes, I wish that this be done by you. Once this is accomplished, all my desires will be fulfilled.
ततो द्रष्टासि समरे यत्करिष्यामि भारत ।
सर्वथा पाण्डवान्सर्वाञ्जेष्याम्यद्य समागतान् ॥५८॥
58. tato draṣṭāsi samare yatkariṣyāmi bhārata ,
sarvathā pāṇḍavānsarvāñjeṣyāmyadya samāgatān.
58. tataḥ draṣṭā asi samare yat kariṣyāmi bhārata
sarvathā pāṇḍavān sarvān jeṣyāmi adya samāgatān
58. tataḥ bhārata samare yat kariṣyāmi draṣṭā asi
sarvathā adya sarvān samāgatān pāṇḍavān jeṣyāmi
58. Then, O Bhārata, you will witness in battle what I shall accomplish. I shall certainly conquer all the assembled Pāṇḍavas today.
दुर्योधन उवाच ।
सर्वमेतत्करिष्यामि यथा त्वं कर्ण मन्यसे ।
सोपासङ्गा रथाः साश्वा अनुयास्यन्ति सूतज ॥५९॥
59. duryodhana uvāca ,
sarvametatkariṣyāmi yathā tvaṁ karṇa manyase ,
sopāsaṅgā rathāḥ sāśvā anuyāsyanti sūtaja.
59. duryodhanaḥ uvāca sarvam etat kariṣyāmi yathā tvam karṇa
manyase sopāsaṅgāḥ rathāḥ sāśvāḥ anuyāsyanti sūta-ja
59. duryodhanaḥ uvāca tvam yathā manyase karṇa etat sarvam
kariṣyāmi sūta-ja sopāsaṅgāḥ sāśvāḥ rathāḥ anuyāsyanti
59. Duryodhana said: 'I shall arrange all this just as you wish, O Karṇa. The chariots, complete with quivers and horses, will accompany you, O son of a charioteer (sūta-ja).'
नाराचान्गार्ध्रपक्षांश्च शकटानि वहन्तु ते ।
अनुयास्याम कर्ण त्वां वयं सर्वे च पार्थिवाः ॥६०॥
60. nārācāngārdhrapakṣāṁśca śakaṭāni vahantu te ,
anuyāsyāma karṇa tvāṁ vayaṁ sarve ca pārthivāḥ.
60. nārācān gārdhrapakṣān ca śakaṭāni vahantu te
anuyāsyāma karṇa tvām vayam sarve ca pārthivāḥ
60. te nārācān gārdhrapakṣān ca śakaṭāni
vahantu karṇa tvām vayam sarve ca pārthivāḥ
60. Let them carry the iron arrows, the eagle-feathered shafts, and the carts. O Karna, all of us kings will follow you.
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा महाराज तव पुत्राः प्रतापवान् ।
अभिगम्याब्रवीद्राजा मद्रराजमिदं वचः ॥६१॥
61. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvā mahārāja tava putrāḥ pratāpavān ,
abhigamyābravīdrājā madrarājamidaṁ vacaḥ.

61. Sañjaya said: O great king, having spoken thus, your mighty son, the king, approached the king of Madras and spoke these words.
