सूत उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स तेजस्वी शृङ्गी कोपसमन्वितः ।
मृतधारं गुरुं श्रुत्वा पर्यतप्यत मन्युना ॥१॥

1. sūta uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa tejasvī śṛṅgī kopasamanvitaḥ ,

Sūta said: Thus addressed, the glorious Śṛṅgin, filled with wrath, was tormented by sorrow upon hearing that his father (who was like a guru) was bearing a corpse.
स तं कृशमभिप्रेष्क्य सूनृतां वाचमुत्सृजन् ।
अपृच्छत कथं तातः स मेऽद्य मृतधारकः ॥२॥

2. sa taṁ kṛśamabhipreṣkya sūnṛtāṁ vācamutsṛjan ,
apṛcchata kathaṁ tātaḥ sa me'dya mṛtadhārakaḥ.

saḥ tam kṛśam abhipreṣkya sūnṛtām vācam utsṛjan

Seeing that emaciated man, and speaking pleasant words, he asked: 'My dear man, how is it that my father today is bearing a dead body?'
कृश उवाच ।
राज्ञा परिक्षिता तात मृगयां परिधावता ।
अवसक्तः पितुस्तेऽद्य मृतः स्कन्धे भुजंगमः ॥३॥
राज्ञा परिक्षिता तात मृगयां परिधावता ।

3. kṛśa uvāca ,
rājñā parikṣitā tāta mṛgayāṁ paridhāvatā ,
avasaktaḥ pituste'dya mṛtaḥ skandhe bhujaṁgamaḥ.

Kṛśa said: 'My dear one, today a dead snake was placed on your father's shoulder by King Parikṣit, who was roaming during a hunt.'
शृङ्ग्युवाच ।
किं मे पित्रा कृतं तस्य राज्ञोऽनिष्टं दुरात्मनः ।
ब्रूहि त्वं कृश तत्त्वेन पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥४॥
किं मे पित्रा कृतं तस्य राज्ञोऽनिष्टं दुरात्मनः ।
ब्रूहि त्वं कृश तत्त्वेन पश्य मे तपसो बलम् ॥४॥
4. śṛṅgyuvāca ,
kiṁ me pitrā kṛtaṁ tasya rājño'niṣṭaṁ durātmanaḥ ,
brūhi tvaṁ kṛśa tattvena paśya me tapaso balam.
kiṁ me pitrā kṛtaṁ tasya rājño'niṣṭaṁ durātmanaḥ ,
brūhi tvaṁ kṛśa tattvena paśya me tapaso balam.

śṛṅgiḥ uvāca kim me pitrā kṛtam tasya rājñaḥ aniṣṭam
durātmanaḥ brūhi tvam kṛśa tattvena paśya me tapasaḥ balam

Śṛṅgi said: 'What misdeed was done by my father to that wicked king? Kṛśa, tell me truthfully! Behold the power of my penance!'
कृश उवाच ।
स राजा मृगयां यातः परिक्षिदभिमन्युजः ।
ससार मृगमेकाकी विद्ध्वा बाणेन पत्रिणा ॥५॥

5. kṛśa uvāca ,
sa rājā mṛgayāṁ yātaḥ parikṣidabhimanyujaḥ ,
sasāra mṛgamekākī viddhvā bāṇena patriṇā.

Kṛśa said: 'That King Parikṣit, the son of Abhimanyu, had gone for a hunt. Having pierced a deer with a feathered arrow, he pursued it alone.'
न चापश्यन्मृगं राजा चरंस्तस्मिन्महावने ।
पितरं ते स दृष्ट्वैव पप्रच्छानभिभाषिणम् ॥६॥

6. na cāpaśyanmṛgaṁ rājā caraṁstasminmahāvane ,
pitaraṁ te sa dṛṣṭvaiva papracchānabhibhāṣiṇam.

na ca apaśyat mṛgam rājā caran tasmin mahāvane
pitaram te saḥ dṛṣṭvā eva papraccha anabhibhāṣiṇam

And the king, roaming in that great forest, did not see the deer. Immediately upon seeing your silent father, he asked him.
तं स्थाणुभूतं तिष्ठन्तं क्षुत्पिपासाश्रमातुरः ।
पुनः पुनर्मृगं नष्टं पप्रच्छ पितरं तव ॥७॥

7. taṁ sthāṇubhūtaṁ tiṣṭhantaṁ kṣutpipāsāśramāturaḥ ,
punaḥ punarmṛgaṁ naṣṭaṁ papraccha pitaraṁ tava.

tam sthāṇubhūtam tiṣṭhantam kṣutpipāsāśramāturaḥ
punaḥ punaḥ mṛgam naṣṭam papraccha pitaram tava

Suffering from hunger, thirst, and exhaustion, (he) repeatedly asked your father, who was standing still like a post, about the lost deer.
स च मौनव्रतोपेतो नैव तं प्रत्यभाषत ।
तस्य राजा धनुष्कोट्या सर्पं स्कन्धे समासृजत् ॥८॥

8. sa ca maunavratopeto naiva taṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
tasya rājā dhanuṣkoṭyā sarpaṁ skandhe samāsṛjat.

saḥ ca maunavratopetaḥ na eva tam pratyabhāṣata
tasya rājā dhanuṣkoṭyā sarpam skandhe samāsṛjat

And he (the sage), observing a vow of silence, did not speak to him (the king). Thereupon, the king placed a snake on his (the sage's) shoulder with the tip of his bow.
शृङ्गिंस्तव पिताद्यासौ तथैवास्ते यतव्रतः ।
सोऽपि राजा स्वनगरं प्रतियातो गजाह्वयम् ॥९॥
सोऽपि राजा स्वनगरं प्रतियातो गजाह्वयम् ॥९॥
9. śṛṅgiṁstava pitādyāsau tathaivāste yatavrataḥ ,
so'pi rājā svanagaraṁ pratiyāto gajāhvayam.

śṛṅgiḥ tava pitā adya asau tathā eva āste yatavrataḥ
saḥ api rājā svanagaram pratiyātaḥ gajāhvayam

O Śṛṅgi, your father (Śamīka) still remains there today, just as he was, observing his vow (of silence). And that king (Parīkṣit) also returned to his own city, Hastinapura.
सूत उवाच ।
श्रुत्वैवमृषिपुत्रस्तु दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव विष्ठितः ।
कोपसंरक्तनयनः प्रज्वलन्निव मन्युना ॥१०॥

10. sūta uvāca ,
śrutvaivamṛṣiputrastu divaṁ stabdhveva viṣṭhitaḥ ,
kopasaṁraktanayanaḥ prajvalanniva manyunā.

kopasaṁraktanayanaḥ prajvalanniva manyunā.

sūtaḥ uvāca śrutvā evam ṛṣiputraḥ tu divam stabdhvā
iva viṣṭhitaḥ kopasaṃraktanayanaḥ prajvalan iva manyunā

Sūta said: Having heard this, the sage's son (Śṛṅgi) stood as if rooted (or stiffened) to the spot, with eyes red from rage, seemingly ablaze with indignation.
आविष्टः स तु कोपेन शशाप नृपतिं तदा ।
वार्युपस्पृश्य तेजस्वी क्रोधवेगबलात्कृतः ॥११॥

11. āviṣṭaḥ sa tu kopena śaśāpa nṛpatiṁ tadā ,
vāryupaspṛśya tejasvī krodhavegabalātkṛtaḥ.

āviṣṭaḥ saḥ tu kopenā śaśāpa nṛpatim tadā

Overwhelmed by anger, that powerful son of the sage, compelled by the force of his furious rage, then touched water and cursed the king.
शृङ्ग्युवाच ।
योऽसौ वृद्धस्य तातस्य तथा कृच्छ्रगतस्य च ।
स्कन्धे मृतमवास्राक्षीत्पन्नगं राजकिल्बिषी ॥१२॥
योऽसौ वृद्धस्य तातस्य तथा कृच्छ्रगतस्य च ।
स्कन्धे मृतमवास्राक्षीत्पन्नगं राजकिल्बिषी ॥१२॥
12. śṛṅgyuvāca ,
yo'sau vṛddhasya tātasya tathā kṛcchragatasya ca ,
skandhe mṛtamavāsrākṣītpannagaṁ rājakilbiṣī.
yo'sau vṛddhasya tātasya tathā kṛcchragatasya ca ,
skandhe mṛtamavāsrākṣītpannagaṁ rājakilbiṣī.

śṛṅgī uvāca | yaḥ asau vṛddhasya tātasya tathā kṛcchragatasya
ca | skandhe mṛtam avāsrākṣīt pannagam rājakilbiṣī
ca | skandhe mṛtam avāsrākṣīt pannagam rājakilbiṣī

Śṛṅgī said: "That sinner, who placed a dead snake on the shoulder of my aged father, who was in such a state of difficulty, that king who committed this offense against a brahmin –"
तं पापमतिसंक्रुद्धस्तक्षकः पन्नगोत्तमः ।
आशीविषस्तिग्मतेजा मद्वाक्यबलचोदितः ॥१३॥
आशीविषस्तिग्मतेजा मद्वाक्यबलचोदितः ॥१३॥
13. taṁ pāpamatisaṁkruddhastakṣakaḥ pannagottamaḥ ,
āśīviṣastigmatejā madvākyabalacoditaḥ.

tam pāpam atisaṃkruddhaḥ takṣakaḥ pannagottamaḥ
| āśīviṣaḥ tigmatejāḥ mad vākyabala coditaḥ

— him, that sinner, Takṣaka, the foremost of serpents, exceedingly enraged, whose fangs bear venom, and who possesses fierce energy, impelled by the power of my words —
सप्तरात्रादितो नेता यमस्य सदनं प्रति ।
द्विजानामवमन्तारं कुरूणामयशस्करम् ॥१४॥

14. saptarātrādito netā yamasya sadanaṁ prati ,
dvijānāmavamantāraṁ kurūṇāmayaśaskaram.

saptarātrāt itaḥ netā yamasya sadanam prati
| dvijānām avamantāram kurūṇām ayaśaskaram

— will, within seven nights from this day, lead him to the abode of Yama – that disrespecter of brahmins, that disgracer of the Kuru lineage.
सूत उवाच ।
इति शप्त्वा नृपं क्रुद्धः शृङ्गी पितरमभ्ययात् ।
आसीनं गोचरे तस्मिन्वहन्तं शवपन्नगम् ॥१५॥
इति शप्त्वा नृपं क्रुद्धः शृङ्गी पितरमभ्ययात् ।
आसीनं गोचरे तस्मिन्वहन्तं शवपन्नगम् ॥१५॥
15. sūta uvāca ,
iti śaptvā nṛpaṁ kruddhaḥ śṛṅgī pitaramabhyayāt ,
āsīnaṁ gocare tasminvahantaṁ śavapannagam.
iti śaptvā nṛpaṁ kruddhaḥ śṛṅgī pitaramabhyayāt ,
āsīnaṁ gocare tasminvahantaṁ śavapannagam.

sūta uvāca | iti śaptvā nṛpam kruddhaḥ śṛṅgī pitaram
abhyayāt | āsīnam gocare tasmin vahantam śavapannagam
abhyayāt | āsīnam gocare tasmin vahantam śavapannagam

Sūta said: "Having thus cursed the king, the enraged Śṛṅgī approached his father, who was sitting in that cow pasture, still carrying the dead snake."
स तमालक्ष्य पितरं शृङ्गी स्कन्धगतेन वै ।
शवेन भुजगेनासीद्भूयः क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥१६॥
शवेन भुजगेनासीद्भूयः क्रोधसमन्वितः ॥१६॥
16. sa tamālakṣya pitaraṁ śṛṅgī skandhagatena vai ,
śavena bhujagenāsīdbhūyaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ.
śavena bhujagenāsīdbhūyaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ.

saḥ tam ālakṣya pitaram śṛṅgī skandhagatena vai
| śavena bhujagena āsīt bhūyaḥ krodhasamanvitaḥ

Upon seeing his father, Śṛṅgī, noticing the dead snake still on his shoulder, became even more overcome with rage.
दुःखाच्चाश्रूणि मुमुचे पितरं चेदमब्रवीत् ।
श्रुत्वेमां धर्षणां तात तव तेन दुरात्मना ॥१७॥

17. duḥkhāccāśrūṇi mumuce pitaraṁ cedamabravīt ,
śrutvemāṁ dharṣaṇāṁ tāta tava tena durātmanā.

duḥkhāt ca aśrūṇi mumuce pitaram ca idam abravīt
śrutvā imām dharṣaṇām tāta tava tena durātmanā

And from sorrow, he shed tears and spoke this to his father: 'Father, having heard of this outrage committed against you by that wicked soul...'
राज्ञा परिक्षिता कोपादशपं तमहं नृपम् ।
यथार्हति स एवोग्रं शापं कुरुकुलाधमः ॥१८॥
यथार्हति स एवोग्रं शापं कुरुकुलाधमः ॥१८॥
18. rājñā parikṣitā kopādaśapaṁ tamahaṁ nṛpam ,
yathārhati sa evograṁ śāpaṁ kurukulādhamaḥ.
yathārhati sa evograṁ śāpaṁ kurukulādhamaḥ.

rājñā parikṣitā kopāt aśapam tam aham nṛpam
yathā arhati sa eva ugram śāpam kurukulādhamah
yathā arhati sa eva ugram śāpam kurukulādhamah

Having heard of this outrage committed against you, Father, by that wicked King Parikshit, I, in my anger, cursed that king. Indeed, as that vilest of the Kuru lineage deserves, a terrible curse [was pronounced upon him].
सप्तमेऽहनि तं पापं तक्षकः पन्नगोत्तमः ।
वैवस्वतस्य भवनं नेता परमदारुणम् ॥१९॥
वैवस्वतस्य भवनं नेता परमदारुणम् ॥१९॥
19. saptame'hani taṁ pāpaṁ takṣakaḥ pannagottamaḥ ,
vaivasvatasya bhavanaṁ netā paramadāruṇam.

saptame ahani tam pāpam takṣakaḥ pannaga uttamah
vaivasvatasya bhavanam netā parama dāruṇam
vaivasvatasya bhavanam netā parama dāruṇam

On the seventh day, Takshaka, the foremost of serpents, will lead that sinner to the exceedingly dreadful abode of Yama.
तमब्रवीत्पिता ब्रह्मंस्तथा कोपसमन्वितम् ।
न मे प्रियं कृतं तात नैष धर्मस्तपस्विनाम् ॥२०॥

20. tamabravītpitā brahmaṁstathā kopasamanvitam ,
na me priyaṁ kṛtaṁ tāta naiṣa dharmastapasvinām.
na me priyaṁ kṛtaṁ tāta naiṣa dharmastapasvinām.

tam abravīt pitā brahman tathā kopasamanvitam na
me priyam kṛtam tāta na eṣa dharmaḥ tapasvinām
me priyam kṛtam tāta na eṣa dharmaḥ tapasvinām
20.
His father spoke to him, who was thus filled with anger: 'My son, this act of yours is not pleasing to me. This is not the dharma of ascetics.'
वयं तस्य नरेन्द्रस्य विषये निवसामहे ।
न्यायतो रक्षितास्तेन तस्य पापं न रोचये ॥२१॥
न्यायतो रक्षितास्तेन तस्य पापं न रोचये ॥२१॥
21. vayaṁ tasya narendrasya viṣaye nivasāmahe ,
nyāyato rakṣitāstena tasya pāpaṁ na rocaye.
nyāyato rakṣitāstena tasya pāpaṁ na rocaye.

vayam tasya narendrasya viṣaye nivasāmahe
nyāyataḥ rakṣitāḥ tena tasya pāpam na rocaye

We reside in the territory of that king. We are protected by him justly. Therefore, I do not approve of this sin (i.e., this curse) against him.
सर्वथा वर्तमानस्य राज्ञो ह्यस्मद्विधैः सदा ।
क्षन्तव्यं पुत्र धर्मो हि हतो हन्ति न संशयः ॥२२॥
क्षन्तव्यं पुत्र धर्मो हि हतो हन्ति न संशयः ॥२२॥
22. sarvathā vartamānasya rājño hyasmadvidhaiḥ sadā ,
kṣantavyaṁ putra dharmo hi hato hanti na saṁśayaḥ.
kṣantavyaṁ putra dharmo hi hato hanti na saṁśayaḥ.

sarvathā vartamānasya rājñaḥ hi asmad-vidhaiḥ sadā
kṣantavyam putra dharmaḥ hi hataḥ hanti na saṃśayaḥ

O son, a king, acting in any manner, must always be forgiven by people like us. For indeed, Dharma, when violated, surely destroys; there is no doubt about it.
यदि राजा न रक्षेत पीडा वै नः परा भवेत् ।
न शक्नुयाम चरितुं धर्मं पुत्र यथासुखम् ॥२३॥
न शक्नुयाम चरितुं धर्मं पुत्र यथासुखम् ॥२३॥
23. yadi rājā na rakṣeta pīḍā vai naḥ parā bhavet ,
na śaknuyāma carituṁ dharmaṁ putra yathāsukham.
na śaknuyāma carituṁ dharmaṁ putra yathāsukham.

O son, if the king does not protect (us), indeed, great suffering would come upon us. We would not be able to practice Dharma as we please.
रक्ष्यमाणा वयं तात राजभिः शास्त्रदृष्टिभिः ।
चरामो विपुलं धर्मं तेषां चांशोऽस्ति धर्मतः ॥२४॥

24. rakṣyamāṇā vayaṁ tāta rājabhiḥ śāstradṛṣṭibhiḥ ,
carāmo vipulaṁ dharmaṁ teṣāṁ cāṁśo'sti dharmataḥ.
carāmo vipulaṁ dharmaṁ teṣāṁ cāṁśo'sti dharmataḥ.
24.
rakṣyamāṇā vayam tāta rājabhiḥ śāstra-dṛṣṭibhiḥ
carāmaḥ vipulam dharmam teṣām ca aṃśaḥ asti dharmataḥ
carāmaḥ vipulam dharmam teṣām ca aṃśaḥ asti dharmataḥ
24.
O dear one, being protected by kings who follow the scriptures, we practice our extensive Dharma. And a share of that (Dharma) belongs to them by virtue of their duty.
परिक्षित्तु विशेषेण यथास्य प्रपितामहः ।
रक्षत्यस्मान्यथा राज्ञा रक्षितव्याः प्रजास्तथा ॥२५॥

25. parikṣittu viśeṣeṇa yathāsya prapitāmahaḥ ,
rakṣatyasmānyathā rājñā rakṣitavyāḥ prajāstathā.

But Parikshit, in particular, protects us just as his great-grandfather (protected). Indeed, he protects his subjects exactly as a king should.
