Bṛhadaśva said: "He (King Ṛtuparṇa) quickly crossed rivers, mountains, forests, and lakes, just as if he were a celestial being moving through the sky."

As the chariot was thus proceeding, King Bhāṅgasvari (Ṛtuparṇa), the conqueror of enemy cities, then saw his upper garment that had fallen.

Then King Ṛtuparṇa, considering the importance of the matter (kāryagaurava) and out of greed for the knowledge of horses (hayajñāna), indeed said to Bahuka, 'So be it.'

26.
'You may take this excellent secret of dice (akṣa-hṛdaya) as you desire. Let my knowledge of horses (aśvahṛdaya) remain deposited with you, O Bahuka.' Having spoken thus, Ṛtuparṇa indeed gave the knowledge to Nala.

Then, from that distressed Kali, a curse like fire emanated. By this, the king, lacking self-control (anātma-vān), was tormented for a long time.

29.
Then Kali, his self (ātman) freed from the poison, resumed his true form. Nala, the angered lord of Niṣadha, wished to curse him.

Frightened, trembling, and with folded hands, Kali said to him: "Restrain your anger, O king! I will give you supreme fame."

Previously, Indrasena's mother (Damayantī), being angered, cursed me. Consequently, when she was abandoned by you (Nala), I was greatly tormented.

O King of Kings, O unconquered one, I dwelled in you in great distress, being consumed day and night by the poison of the king of serpents.

And those people in the world who will diligently praise you, for them, fear born of me will never arise.

34.
Having been addressed thus, King Nala controlled his own anger (ātman). Then, the frightened Kali quickly entered a Bibhītaka tree. Kali, however, was not seen by others, though he spoke to Nala.

35.
Then, King Nala of Niṣadha, the slayer of enemy heroes, was freed from his distress. O King, when Kali was completely vanquished, having reckoned (all that transpired), then indeed the consequences (of these events) became manifest.

36.
Endowed with supreme joy and indeed with great splendor, the radiant (King Nala), having ascended his chariot, departed with swift horses. And the Bibhītaka tree, due to its association with Kali, became inauspicious.

37.
King Nala, with a delighted inner self (ātman), repeatedly urged his excellent horses, which were leaping up as if they were birds (dvijān).

38.
The great-minded King, facing Vidarbha, departed. And when Nala had indeed passed beyond (Kali's influence), Kali also went to his (own) dwellings.

39.
Then, O lord of the earth, King Nala became free from distress. O king, he was released by Kali, having been deprived only of his physical form.
