But what could be more pitiable than this, that I, a pure woman, am made to enter the midst of this assembly today? Where then is the natural law (dharma) of kings?

We have heard that, in the past, righteous women were not brought into the assembly. That ancient and eternal natural law (dharma) has been lost among the Kauravas.

How, indeed, could she, the wife of the Pāṇḍavas, the sister of Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna), and a friend of Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa), a virtuous woman, come to the assembly of kings?

Bhishma said: 'O blessed one, I have indeed explained the supreme understanding (gati) of natural law (dharma). In this world, it is not possible to reach that (understanding), even for great souls (mahātman) who are Brahmins.'

But, how a powerful person (puruṣa) in the world perceives natural law (dharma) - that very natural law (dharma) becomes declared by others at the crucial time for natural law (dharma).

I am certainly unable to definitively answer this question of yours, due to the subtle and profound nature of this matter (kārya) and its gravity.

Indeed, Yudhisthira is the ultimate authority in this matter, that is my opinion. He himself ought to declare whether it is a lost (ajitām) or won (jitām) situation.

Having seen those princes and grandsons of kings who had become silent, Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana), as if smiling, then spoke these words to the daughter of the Pañcāla king (Draupadī).

Yājñaseṇī, let this question be put to Bhīma, Arjuna, and Sahadeva, who possess noble strength, and likewise to your husband Nakula. Let them declare the statement born from you.

Pañcāli, for your sake, let them declare Yudhiṣṭhira to be without power among the noble ones. And let all declare the king of natural law (dharma-rāja) to be false; then, Pañcāli, you will be freed from the state of servitude.

Let the great-souled king of natural law (dharma-rāja), who is established in natural law (dharma) and comparable to Indra, himself declare this. If he is your master, or if he is not, then quickly accept one [of these options] based on his statement.

Indeed, all these Kauravas in the assembly are currently experiencing your suffering. Yet, even the noble-minded ones (the elders) do not speak what is right, though they observe your husbands who are of noble character but possess little fortune.

Then, all the courtiers present loudly praised the Kuru king's statement. They also made triumphant gestures with their arms while shouting, and a resounding cry of "hā hā" arose there. All the kings were pleased, honoring the best of the Kurus, who was adhering to dharma (dharma).

And all those kings looked at Yudhishthira, wondering, "What will the knower of dharma (dharma) indeed say?" – with their faces turned sideways in anticipation.

They wondered, "What will Bibhatsu (Arjuna), the unconquered Pandava (pāṇḍava) in battle, say? And Bhimasena? And the twins?" Thus, they were greatly filled with curiosity.

When that sound ceased, Bhimasena spoke this, raising his massive, well-formed arm, which was smeared with sandalwood paste.

If Yudhishthira, our teacher and the king of righteousness (dharma), were not the master of this family, we would not tolerate this.

He is the lord of our meritorious austerities (tapas), and indeed, the lord of our very lives. If he considers his own self (ātman) conquered, then we are also conquered.

34.
Indeed, no one with a mortal nature (martyadharman) who is alive and treads upon the earth with his foot shall escape me, after having seized these locks of hair of Panchali.

Behold my two long and rounded arms, like iron bars. Not even Indra (Śatakratu) would escape after getting between them.

Thus, even though I am bound by the bonds of duty (dharma), I do not perceive this as a calamity. I am restrained by reverence and also by the control exerted by Arjuna.

37.
But like a lion unleashed by the king of duty (dharma), I would crush these sinful sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, these wicked ones, like small deer, with mighty hand-strikes.

38.
Then Bhishma, Drona, and Vidura also said to him: 'Please forgive them, for everything is possible for you.'
